WELLRED COMEDY FUNDRAISER AT THE SPACE Happen to see singersongwriter Jason Isbell at House of Blues back in March? If you arrived early, you might’ve also caught his unconventional opener: self-described “liberal redneck” Trae Crowder. Half Jeff Foxworthy, half Bill Maher, the Tennessee-born stand-up likes to poke fun at the rural South and its conservative politics. Sample joke: “The way I feel about the Confederate Flag is the way I look at the original Power Rangers TV show: I liked it when I was a kid, but I didn’t know any better.” You’ll get another shot to catch Crowder during this comedy fundraiser for local political action group Battle Born Progress. This time he’s bringing fellow Southern heretics Corey Ryan Forrester and Drew Morgan— which should mean triple the Trump digs. $35-$55. –Mike Prevatt

sunday, 8 p.m.

CHIC AT THE PEARL Opening for Duran Duran last year, Nile Rodgers’ disco/soul group coaxed a Mandalay Bay Events Center crowd from its seats with dare-notto-dance hits like “Good Times” and “Le Freak.” The energy should be even higher this time, with Chic’s own fans populating the Palms’ concert hall. $41-$96. –Spencer Patterson

The Big Lebowski at Boulevard Pool

Dudes, we finally got the venue we wanted. Joel and Ethan Coen’s modern comedy classic The Big Lebowski is screening at the Cosmopolitan on Monday night. (The Cosmo is on Las Vegas Boulevard, near the In-NOut Burger.) And are you ready for this? The movie stars Jeff Bridges, who’s not a hero— ’cause what’s a hero?—but he’s the man for his time ’n’ place. Fits right in there. It also stars Steve Buscemi and John Goodman … what, have you ever heard of a little show called Roseanne? John Goodman co-starred in 221 episodes—the entirety of the series. Not exactly a lightweight. So we’ll, uh, see the movie—should be a delight; the Cosmo’s poolside movies usually are—and we’ll have a few drinks, a few laughs. Our problems are over, dudes. $5. –Geoff Carter

Instead of a classic film noir, watch a “clown noir.” Majestic Repertory Theatre brings a new dark comedy to Downtown from July 13-29. Tapping Clown Bar for a “critic’s pick,” The New York Times describes it as “unabashedly silly but also shrewd” and “a show made for those who enjoy a few winces along with their grins.” The immersive play follows Happy Maloney, a cop who descends into the gritty clown underworld to investigate his brother’s murder. Sounds pretty much like a regular day in Las Vegas. $25, majesticrepertory.com. Massive spoiler alert: Winter is coming … no, scratch that, “laughter is coming.” Two days before the Season 7 premiere of HBO’s mega-hit Game of Thrones, the Space offers up some lighthearted fun. Running July 14-23, Thrones! The Musical Parody was created by improv group Baby Wants Candy. It has sold out shows both in the UK and stateside. “I could not help but laugh, be slightly embarrassed, but be wholly delighted,” one reviewer wrote on Chicagotheatrereview. com. $35-$55, thespacelv.com. Finally, a jukebox musical revue spotlighting women’s voices. Beehive the ’60s Musical (July 14-30) features a six-woman cast who channel multitudes: Diana Ross, Janis Joplin, Tina Turner, Aretha Franklin and more. Expect a bevy of hits as the loose storyline takes you through the transformative decade: “My Boyfriend’s Back,” “Downtown,” “Respect,” “A Natural Woman,” “It’s My Party,” “Son of a Preacher Man,” “Me and Bobby McGee” and more. $25, lvlt.org. –C. ART IN SPACE

While we wait for our art museum, how about some warehouse-sized gallery pop-ups? BY GEOFF CARTER

Y

ou ought to check out the 14th Factory ), a group art exhibi(the14thfactory.com), tion curated by artist Simon Birch inside an abandoned warehouse in LA’s Lincoln Heights neighborhood. (Perhaps you’ve seen one of its pieces trending in your Instagram feed: a near-perfect replica of the sterile hotel suite from Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey.) Critical consensus on the pop-up exhibit is split, but there’s no denying the crowds it’s drawing to what was recently a no-man’s-land. It recalls this past spring, when Nevada Art Museum’s Tilting the Basin group show took over a warehouse space on Commerce Street in Downtown Las Vegas. Tilting and 14th Factory are different creatures, but they both generated tremendous interest where there was none before, spiritually or spatially. Las Vegas, patiently awaiting the arrival its homegrown art museum, could use that kind of enthusiasm to keep the museum fires stoked, and it looks like it’s getting some. Sin City Gallery’s popular 12 Inches of Sin group show (12ofsin.com)) takes over a one-off location near Commercial Center the weekend of July 21, and more encouraging still, one of the drivers behind the gestating Art Museum at Symphony Park has pop-up plans. AMSP partners Katie O’Neill and Michele C. Quinn have their hands full right now, raising funds for the museum and talking to the Reno-based Nevada Museum of Art about a possible merger. And Quinn herself is preparing for a Raymond Pettibon retrospective at her gallery, MCQ Fine Art,, this September. (Ever seen the Black Flag logo, or the cover to Sonic Youth’s Goo? Then you know Pettibon’s work.) But Quinn is going further still: She’s working with developer Steven Molasky to convert some of the warehouses on Commerce into gallery spaces, ranging in size from intimate to factory-big. Unfortunately, what Quinn and Molasky are calling the Smart Initiative might not see its first exhibitions until 2018. “We tried to make something happen for 2017, but the time window was too tight,” Quinn says, citing shifting artist schedules and still-active construction in the spaces. But she says gallery shows, perhaps even Tilting-sized ones, are coming to those warehouse spaces next year. The fire will stay lit.

THE NEW NAMASTE: GOAT YOGA Karaoke yoga. Booze yoga. Rave yoga. As novelty yoga flourishes, the meditative aspect of the traditional practice diminishes—as it certainly would with the latest gimmick: goat yoga. Practitioners bend themselves into pretzels on a grassy field where baby goats have free reign, which means om gives way to awww when Billy trots under your Downward Dog.

But finding zen is hardly the point of this class, says Brandon Nobles, co-owner of Goat Yoga Las Vegas. “No, the focus level of our yoga classes are not on par with the average yoga classes, but that’s okay ... Listening to 20 people giggle when they hear a goat sneeze for the first time or the laughter when one of the goats decides someone needs help stretching and jumps up on their back is an incredible kind of therapy.” For more info, visit goatyogalv.com. –Mike Prevatt

BLACK MARKET CRASH? With dispensaries still busy, how will traditional pot dealers be affected? BY C. MOON REED

1 BIG PHOTO

Whatever floats your goat. (Wade Vandermort/Special to the Weekly)

STUDENTS AREN’T THE ONLY ONES IN NEED OF SCHOOL SUPPLIES Acquiring all the necessary supplies for the upcoming school year isn’t getting any cheaper, but it’s especially expensive for teachers—to the tune of an average $500 out of their own pockets, according to Time.com. Which is why Youth Dance Academy and marketing company Live to Give Group will tweak the traditional student supply collection drive with Supply a Teacher. Businesses like Findlay Volkswagen, Sunrise Coffee and Real Results Fitness will accept whiteboard markers, construction paper and other classroom essentials—full supply and drop-off-site lists can be found at livetogivegroup. com/calendar—until July 26. Supply kits will be distributed to credentialed teachers on July 29 at Galleria mall. –Mike Prevatt

For all the giddy news of long lines and robust sales, one group has been semiforgotten amid Nevada’s recreational marijuana boom: your friendly neighborhood pot dealer. Now that weed is legal, what will happen to the black market? Here are a few factors to consider: Lower prices. For now, illegal marijuana continues to be cheaper, if for no other reason than it’s not subject to any taxes or regulations. Word on the street is that dealers don’t seem too worried. If anything, the destigmatization and ubiquity of cannabis could actually help drive business. Loyalty. For longtime users, it’s easiest to carry on as usual. “Our dealer is our friend, so we want to throw him a bone every once in awhile,” says Rob, who withheld his last name. Unless there’s a reason to change. Rob has already visited a dispensary three times. “It’s like a McDonald’s for pot,” he says. Supporting small business. Another (anonymous) buyer said he plans to continue purchasing from his usual dealer. Even though he’s happy about the new taxes levied onto legal recreational cannabis, he’d rather support the little guy. “It’s like your local bar,” he says. “They know you and they know what you like.” Upping the game. Faced with corporate competition, dealers might eventually adapt to keep their profit share. One anonymous dealer reported having clients suddenly demanding boutiquecaliber packaging. Now that dispensaries offer special child-proof containers, the traditional plastic baggie seems shoddy. Variety and convenience. The dealer’s best customer will stray if he or she needs to purchase a more elaborate product, like edibles or vape pen oil. There’s no denying that dispensaries boast the widest selections. Says local Blair Dewane: “They’re everything a 16-year-old dreamt about as a young stoner.”

BEST STEAKHOUSE Cut

BEST DISH THAT’LL MAKE YOU CONSIDER GOING VEGAN Impossible Burger at Andrea’s

Vox called it the “Tesla of food,” and while there are a handful of places in New York City, San Francisco and LA where you can get your paws on this “bleeding” meatless patty, only Andrea’s serves up the plant-based burger from Silicon Valley’s Impossible Foods. Encore, 702-770-5340.

BEST BAND VEGAS STOLE Indigo Kidd

When this grungy, pop-punk trio arrived in the Valley last year, we knew the music scene would be better for it. These days, the guys feel more like natives than Washington State ex-pats, and they’re currently gearing up to release a full-length in September. indigokidd.com.

BEST EMERGING VOICE Kaylie Foster

This soulful singer-songwriter has many stardommaking talents in her skill set, but her warm, passionate and wholly genuine vocals stand apart. She knows when to hold back, and when to sing her heart out—and she makes it all seem effortless. soundcloud.com/kayliefostermusic.

BEST HIP-HOP SWISS ARMY KNIFE Phil A

From making beats for many of the hip-hop artists in town and hosting monthly party Rap Is Fun— which celebrates its second birthday next month— to his own solo career and new project Slump Lords, Phil stands tall as one of the most versatile players on the scene today. rapisfun.bandcamp.com

BEST PLACE TO CATCH RISING COMICS The Dirty at 12:30

We can’t guarantee that the folks you’ll catch onstage at this Friday-night South Point staple will one day host their own HBO specials, but we feel confident about two things: You’ll laugh harder than you have in a while, and you’ll do it sans cover charge. South Point, 702-796-7111.

BEST GIRLS NIGHT OUT Magic Mike Live

COVER STORY

A cheeky female emcee pokes fun at the tropes of male strippers, setting the stage for women to see “what they really want”: high quality dancing, less nakedness and lots of unicorn magic. magicmikelivelasvegas.com.

BEST NEW RESIDENT Ricky Martin

Make plans now to catch Ricky’s return to the Park Theater in September if you want to see one of the most musical, energetic and engaging headliner productions to hit the Strip in who knows how long. Park Theater, 844-600-7275.

MOST ACTIVE ARTIST Wendy Kveck

Her thought-invoking paintings might garner the most attention, but Kveck doesn’t confine herself to canvas. She also publishes the collaborative arts website Settlersandnomads.com and organizes the local advocacy group Desert Arts Action Coalition. wendykveck.com.

BEST ART COLLECTIVE Cult 33

Street/gallery artists Dan 45, SNIPT, There She Is and You Killed Me First produce a flood of popculture mashups. Some are wheatpasted to Downtown walls; some are delivered via a carnival fortune-telling machine called Cultar. All are terminally cool. cult33.wordpress.com.

BEST NEW ART GALLERY Priscilla Fowler Fine Art

The eponymous artist/owner moved here from Colorado after years in the Denver art scene, bringing a fresh, eclectic perspective to the Arts District with this well-curated gallery (and personal studio), currently featuring the work of Lolita Develay. 1025 S. 1st St. #155, 719-371-5640.

BEST FREEBIE Bowling at the Nerd

It’s a classic Vegas promotion: Buy a drink, and your lane is free. The wall-to-wall theming, inventive hospitality and lose-yourself festivity further baits bowlers of every social association. 450 Fremont St. #250, 702-478-7636.

BEST PLACE TO GET FLUSTERED BY MODERN VIDEO GAMES Dave & Buster’s

Hop aboard one of D&B’s many rideable arcade attractions, become immediately disoriented, helplessly spaz out on your controls—and when “game over” flashes, reinsert your card with stubborn delight. Downtown Summerlin, 702-984-4800.

WEEKLY | 07.13.17

BEST MUSIC VENUE Brooklyn Bowl

Maybe it’s the calendar, an eclectic rainbow that runs from Father John Misty to AFI to Run the Jewels. Or maybe it’s the vibe, swirling up strikes and spares, fried chicken and Brooklyn Brewery drafts. It’s probably all that, plus great sound and sightlines. 3545 Las Vegas Blvd. S., 702-862-2695.

BEST VEGAS BAND The Killers

The Killers horde knows: Their favorite Vegas-bred act has a new album on the way, titled Wonderful Wonderful, and first single “The Man” is already making the rounds on rock radio. There’s no firm release date yet, but we’re confident you’ll tell us as soon as you hear something solid. thekillersmusic.com.

BEST COVER BAND Wicked Garden

Blink-182, Foo Fighters, Alice in Chains, Red Hot Chili Peppers and so much more. Focusing on hard rock from the ’90s, WG’s extensive catalog continues to win the hearts of Las Vegans year after year. facebook.com/wickedgardenvegas.

BEST PRODUCTION SHOW The Beatles Love

It’s unfair, really—no other production show in Vegas has the key to the greatest band of all time. The minute Cirque du Soleil dreamt up its Fab Four fantasia, a new king of the Strip was crowned. Mirage, 702-792-7777.

BEST STRIP HEADLINER Terry Fator

Arguably the most successful America’s Got Talent winner, this singing ventriloquist and impressionist keeps his headline show at the Mirage fresh with a rotating “cast” of new characters. Most recent: Elton John and Donald Trump. terryfator.com.

BEST COMEDIAN Carrot Top

There’s nobody like him. Not just in Vegas—on Earth. The comedy of Scott “Carrot Top” Thompson is part goofy props, part wild physicality (and, seriously, dude is ripped) and altogether committed, altogether earnest. He knows his stuff is funny, so we know it’s funny. carrottop.com.

BEST ART GALLERY Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art

The football team has gone 54 games without losing, en route to eight straight state titles (and three national ones), while the boys basketball squad has won six consecutive state trophies. he sound of Atlanta has been at the heart of hiphop and R&B for quite a while now. And perhaps no one has been more influential in molding that sound than songwriter, performer and superproducer Jermaine Dupri. We caught up with JD, who returns to his DJ residency at Tao and Tao Beach this week, to talk music and more.

p h o t o g r a p h b y B y J o n av e n n c i D i va d

a n d

You just finished the So So Summer tour with some of the performers from The Rap Game. It was pretty amazing, 17 cities with nine kids from The Rap Game where they got to perform in front of their fans. We got a bigger response than we actually expected, because the kids that came out were really true fans. Artists from Atlanta are once again on top of the charts. Do you think Atlanta’s influence is bigger than it’s ever been? It can’t be bigger, because people are not buying music and selling records the way they were years ago. But it’s just as vibrant. That earthquake of artists that came before, we sold so many records and created so much culture that the ones you hear about now are almost living on the fumes of all that. The city still moves off what

was already laid down. What is it about Atlanta than cultivates originality? It’s a city that strives to be accepted, to be recognized, and when you do that you end up with something different. Atlanta artists seem to come out doing something different than what we’ve seen, if you think about, for example, the way Andre 3000 was dressing. It was so odd, just completely different. At this point in your career, how do you feel about producing versus performing? I like writing and having those artists go out and get praise and people loving those songs. And then at my shows, people scream when we come out and I get that, too. It’s the same thing when I come to Vegas to DJ. It’s interesting when I DJ, because maybe half of the crowd wants me to perform as Jermaine the artist, so I have to try to juggle when is the right time to play something or perform. Jermaine Dupri at Tao at Venetian, July 13 & August 3; at Tao Beach, July 15 & August 5. –Brock Radke

fter a series of mixtapes unleashed between 2012 and 2014—plus scene-stealing guest appearances on tracks by Rihanna, Schoolboy Q and Isaiah Rashad— expectations were sky-high for Ctrl, the debut studio album from SZA. When the delayed work finally arrived in early June, those expectations were exceeded; the 26-year-old artist goes above and beyond with a genre-defying collection of deeply personal songs not easily compared to the work of would-be R&B peers. As the sole woman on the Top Dawg label, the singer and songwriter was guaranteed to drop an album with a hip-hop edge, but that’s just one of the many brushstrokes SZA uses to compose a raw, honest self-portrait. The slinky, tropical groove “Love Galore,” which she performed at the recent BET Awards, sets a laid-back tone, while “Drew Barrymore” sounds more like a Lilith Fair-era alt-rock meditation on the roller coaster ride of relationships. “Prom” is a wistful

indie-electro gem, another track demonstrating SZA’s ability to blend catchy melodies and hooks with emotional lyrics. “Garden (Say It Like Dat)” will make your head nod until you listen to the almost unbearably sweet and vulnerable lyrics: “Hope you never find out who I really am/’Cause you’ll never love me/But I believe you when you say it like that.” The only sensible comparison for Ctrl might be Frank Ocean’s Channel Orange, similarly tossed into the modern R&B category when both records simply have too many adventurous, emotional sounds. Las Vegas will get to see SZA’s skills for itself when her Ctrl Tour lands at Vinyl at the Hard Rock Hotel on September 8. –Brock Radke

ith her raw, witty lyricism and moody, punk-rock sensibilities, it’s easy to see why K.Flay is the first signing to Interscope Record’s Night Street imprint, helmed by Imagine Dragons frontman Dan Reynolds— and why she’s an ideal get for the first Emerge Music + Impact Conference in Las Vegas, Reynolds’ hometown. The 32-year-old Illinoisborn musician is one of the most different-sounding artists out there; Entertainment Weekly called her 2014 full-length debut Life as a Dog a combo of “spaced-out rap beats and chiming indie rock.” Initially inspired by the early recordings of Kid Cudi, K.Flay is dedicated to creating something musically interesting while remaining utterly honest. Those dual ambitions are as evident in her breakthrough 2011 mixtape I Stopped Caring in ’96 as they are in last year’s Crush Me EP, which she recorded with Nashville musician JT Daly (and LA producer Simon Says) in a converted carriage house in Tennessee. “I remember I was leaving the studio in Tennessee really late one night and playing ‘Hollywood Forever’ super-loud in the car,” she recalls. “All of a sudden

I was jolted back to the first time I ever pressed my music onto CD, and to putting all the boxes of CDs in my trunk and saying to myself, ‘That’s cool — I made that.’ It was this weird joyous feeling, and I’d completely forgotten all about it until that night in Nashville.” The plan is to supply plenty of those weird, joyous feelings at Emerge— especially when K.Flay takes the stage. In this weekly series, we spotlight the performers and other participants who will combine for November’s Emerge Music + Impact Conference in Las Vegas.

ou kids just don’t know. Way before Las Vegas nightlife was all about jet-setting DJs and big rooms on the Strip blasting cryo and confetti, there was an honest-to-goodness nightclub out in the suburbs ... and it was cool. The bar was packed with pretty people, a separate dancefloor room bumped with locals and on the right night, you might lock eyes with one of the celeb pals of the club’s owner, Rande Gerber. Whiskey Sky was the place to be, just one symbol of the new level of luxury and amenities in neighborhood resorts introduced by Station Casinos at its Green Valley Ranch Resort, opened

in late 2001. For a long time after it closed, echoes of that club remained just off GVR’s hotel lobby space, but not anymore. The Henderson hub recently finished a complete renovation of the space, not only freshening up the comfy check-in area but adding swanky new meeting rooms, a bright business center, a grand hall leading back up to the casino floor and a tidy, intimate lobby bar serving hand-crafted cocktails with relaxing views of the backyard pool and garden. An abstract cluster of metallic rods floats above the handsome, high tables in the bar, a chandelier in contrast to the paper

lantern-style fixtures hanging in the hall. It’s detail-oriented designs like these that set this hotel apart so many years ago, and continue to create the right mood today ... or tonight. Is it any wonder why locals tend to drift away from the Strip? Lobby Bar at Green Valley Ranch Resort, 702-6177777; Monday-Thursday 3-9 p.m., Friday & Saturday 1 p.m.-midnight, Sunday 1-9 p.m. –Brock Radke

hef Danny Elmaleh’s contemporary Mediterranean cuisine has been a powerful favorite at SLS since the resort rose from the ashes of the Sahara three years ago. Maybe it’s because each fresh, light dish is supercharged with intense flavors, creating one of the most social and shareable dining experiences on the Strip. Thanks to the new “social hour” at Cleo—available daily from 5 to 7 p.m.— that experience is easier than ever. Beer and wine, of course, are available at discounted prices (that’s

A N D A L I K E what makes a happy hour happy), but numerous dishes are also available for $10 or less, including dips like the savory eggplant-infused babaganoush, spicy and citrusy carrot harissa, and creamy hummus with tahini—all served with fresh-fromthe-oven laffa bread, warm, chewy and satisfying. Crisp flatbreads like the one with artichoke, potato, wilted arugula and mozzarella also make their way to the social-hour menu, along with the seasonally ideal tomato and burrata combo and a chopped salad of cucumbers, freekeh and more juicy tomatoes.

Taking advantage of these specials is just like the first time you ate at Cleo: too good to be true. But it’s right there waiting. Cleo at SLS, 702-7617612; Sunday-Thursday 6-10:30 p.m., Friday & Saturday 6-11 p.m.

t isn’t like any other bar on the Las Vegas Strip, and that’s exactly why you’ll fall in love with it.

Located near Joe’s Stone Crab in the farthest reaches of the Forum Shops at Caesars sits the Otheroom, an unassuming and dimly lit bar that can’t help but pique your curiosity. The brand known for its following among craft beer and wine enthusiasts at its New York City and LA locations, mixes things up at its new Vegas spot, venturing into craft cocktails and fun fingerfoods like maple bacon tater tots and a shortrib grilled cheese. With brick and metal finishes and evocative, moody light fixtures, the vibe is urban yet sophisticated, funky yet refined. It could easily be a sister bar to Downtown’s Velveteen Rabbit, or a contemporary cousin to the offStrip Herbs & Rye. Whether you’re just visiting Vegas or are a true local, the cheeky cocktail menu—designed by mixologist Andrew Pollard—is well worth the trip. Fans of the Asian citrus yuzu will love the sweet-and-sour Cosmo Is Dead, featuring Brooklyn Gin, lemon, house blueberry grenadine and sparkling

wine. And the Brazilian Wax (Avuá Prata CachaÇa, Tanteo jalapeño tequila, lime, pineapple, basil and passionfruit) is as smooth as its name suggests. Designed with attitude in mind, Otheroom bucks the predictability of the Strip, taking guests out of their comfort zone to discover something new and intriguing. The In Through the Out Door, for example, is a take on a Paloma, but swaps tequila for Sotol Por Siempre. Otheroom’s version of a mule—Smokey & The Bandit—uses bourbon, smoked peach liquor, lemon, angostura and ginger beer for a smoky new spin. You’ll spot some good suds on tap, like the Dogfish Flesh & Blood IPA or the local Big Dog’s Las Vegas Lager, but there are even more appealing options down menu: premium flights of Macallan 12, 15 and 18-year varietals, and Japanese whiskies like Kakuri Nikka Coffey Grain, Hibiki Harmony and Hibiki 17 Year. With a grand-opening celebration taking place all weekend long, you’ll have every excuse to drink and eat your way through the menu. The Otheroom at the Forum Shops at Caesars, 702-836-2096; daily 11 a.m. to midnight. –Leslie Ventura P HOTO G RA P H B Y W A D E VAN D ERVORT

pend 10 minutes with Curtis Briggs and one thing becomes obvious: He loves his job. As the manager of the fountains at Bellagio, Briggs oversees a crew of 29 guys whose job is to make sure the show goes off without a hitch, night after night.

P H OTOGRAP H B Y C H RI S TOP H ER DE V ARGA S

Briggs has worked at the fountains since Bellagio’s 1998 opening— first working on the install as an employee of Wet Design, and then serving as a maintenance engineer before becoming manager. But it was his background in construction and pouring concrete for O at Bellagio that paved the way. “I tried to pick something that was the hardest thing I could find,” Briggs says. “My way of thinking was, if I can master the hardest thing, then the rest of life should come easier.” When he was finally hired to work on the fountains, Briggs had some doubts, he says. But he powered through it. “I thought, ‘Am I going to be able to do this?’ I wasn’t sure. No one had done this before. It was a new show, so everyone was going to have to learn at the same pace, and I thought I can learn just as quick as everyone else. So I did.” Briggs worked as a maintenance engineer for more than a decade,

diving and working on the massive water shooters embedded more than 10 feet under the lake’s surface—the ones that launch dancing streams of water 460 feet into the air. Now, most of Briggs’ job is on land, and in addition to overseeing the fountains, he and his crew are tasked with building and assembling structures for the Bellagio’s conservatory. “When it comes to the hotel, I am super proud to work on the fountains and the conservatory—two things that are free to the public,” Briggs says. “The other thing I really like is working as a team and achieving a goal like the conservatory and being able to see it when it’s finished. The satisfaction that you get from watching it, and the joy it puts on people’s faces—for me, there’s nothing like that.” –Leslie Ventura

War is hell

Simians and humans wage grim battle in War for the Planet of the Apes By Mike D’Angelo umanity has never come across especially well in the rebooted Planet of the Apes franchise, but the first two films—Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011) and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014)—did at least offer a few identification figures who resembled the audience. No such comfort exists in War for the Planet of the Apes, which boldly asks viewers to reject our own kind and root wholeheartedly for simian victory. As ever, the motion-capture performances, anchored by Andy Serkis in the role of head chimp Caesar, are dazzlingly expressive enough to inspire plenty of cross-species empathy. So it’s a shame that War feels the need to stack the deck by making the movie’s handful of humans cartoonishly evil, complexity be damned. That might not feel so misguided had director Matt Reeves—who previously directed Dawn, and co-wrote the screenplay with Mark Bomback—not conceived this third chapter as a deadly serious homage to various classic war films. (Don’t bother

With since we last saw Caesar readying himself for humanity reduced to genocidal aggression plus sustained battle, and what remains of the human one silent moppet, thereby creating a conveniently race has seemingly regressed, with black-and-white moral landscape, there’s some people even lacking the ability little opportunity for subtle character work. Loud! Local music news & notes

+

If you follow The Killers on social media, you might have noticed the group spending a lot of time with new Australian pal Alex Cameron. The indienoir crooner released his debut LP Jumping the Shark last year on Secretly Canadian and is currently gearing up to release upcoming album Forced Witness. He also recently spent a few weeks in Las Vegas, hiking and hanging with Killers frontman Brandon Flowers and filming the video for new single “Candy May.” The clip features Cameron traipsing around familiar Downtown spots like the El Cortez, dancing in motel parking lots and getting fresh with—we can only assume—the elusive Candy May. Speaking of music videos, Vegas indie-folk rockers All-Night Visitors released their latest for “Animal Mind” off recent EP People Places Things. Directed by Ryen McPherson, the video portrays a down-on-herluck woman who lives on the roof of a casino and spends her days wandering the streets of Vegas. In addition to releasing their new EP, Troubled Minds, SquidHat Records punks The Quitters are also featured on the label’s recent compilations Desert Rats With Baseball Bats Vol. 3 and Fresh Ink Vol. 6. Head to squidhat. bandcamp.com to hear the latest from The Quitters and their SquidHat labelmates. Also, Local soul singer and songwriter Brittany Rose drops a new EP, Homegirl, at Vinyl on July 28 with additional performances by Halsey Harkins and The Noir Movement.

Restless energY

Vegas duo Coastwest Unrest sounds fresh on its latest LP By Ian Caramanzana ne huge benefit of being an independent artist: You can do what you want, when you want. Just ask Coastwest Unrest singer/guitarist Noah Dickie, who has used that status to his band’s advantage. Since releasing its debut, Songs From the Desert, nearly a decade ago, Coastwest Unrest has taken its brand of catchy sun-soaked folk across the country. But four albums later, Dickie and his bandmate/brother Josh Dickie have abandoned the traditional album-tour promotional cycle. Their new approach: Write, record and release music, then simply see what happens. “I don’t think we’ve necessarily consciously stepped back from that model,” Noah says. “We were just sitting on the recorded material for months, so we just decided to say, ‘F*ck it’ and put it out.” Spend some time with Coastwest Unrest’s fifth effort, The Crazed Ones—out July 14 on Reclaim Records—and

O

you’ll witness a band in transition. On this batch of 11 songs, the duo digs deeper into poppy melodies and conventional song structures, a far cry from its early, spastic folk-punk. Here, the brothers give us huge hooks ready for campsite sing-alongs (see: “The Mainstream,” and the album’s title track), along with some midtempo acoustic folk ballads (“Stateline” and “More Madness, Please”) that demonstrate the band’s sonic expansion. Noah expounds on the restlessness of being on tour in the driving pop-rock escapade “Coming Home.” Speaking of which, when will the Vegas pair play its next hometown show? “We’ve got a show in LA lined-up for August, but that’s all we’ve got for now,” Noah says. “We’d love to play more shows, but now it just feels right to sit back. I think recording and releasing music is a success in itself.” soundcloud.com/coastwestunrest

SONGS OF LOVE AND HATE VEGAS SONGWRITER BRETT VEE CHANNELS HIS EMOTIONS INTO HIS MUSIC BY LESLIE VENTURA m sitting in Brett Vee’s living room, chatting with the songwriter about his solo project as bandmates shuffle in and out of his house. “People will be like, ‘How long have you been playing guitar?’ Long enough to where I should be way better,” he says in his monotone register. That cavalier attitude is just as palpable in his recordings. Drawing on influences like Guided by Voices, The Rentals (From left) Brett Vee and bandmates Aldred Basiga, and the Ramones, Vee plays raw, lo-fi power-pop. And while Beau Monnot and Jack Cowell. (Spencer Burton/Special to the Weekly) his laissez-faire, punk rock ethos engulfs every song, he’s also a workhorse, playing gigs with a rotating cast of bandmates, churning out tunes online and holding some songs back to drop later on his own label, No Sky Cassette Tapes. Vee started self-releasing his material with now-defunct band Good Grief, he says, because he didn’t feel comfortable asking others to do it. “If they want to put it out for me, they’ll ask me. If I don’t want to wait around, I’ll put it out myself.” A posthumous Good Grief tape awaits, and Las Vegan Bobby Franks plans to release a Vee EP, Derivative Nation, on vinyl through his Running in Place Records imprint later this summer. Vee’s latest EP, the five-song Generalizing Anxiety, swells with fuzzed-out distortion (hear: the rousing, minute-long “Not Proud”), chunky hooks and lyrics about “not liking where I am in life, whether that’s geographically or emotionally,” Vee says. If the context varies, his critical relationship with relationship with Las Vegas remains a common thread. “From the guy at 7-11 to people on the road … there’s not a lot of kindness to go around here,” he says. “I think it’s because we’re not supposed to be here. It’s an inhospitable environment, and people have this weird instinct to try and survive over everyone else.” Nevertheless, camaraderie has kept him tethered to the desert—at least for now. “It’s very bewildering to me that these people want to play the music I write,” Vee says humbly. “They’re not obliged to—it’s a thing they choose to do in their free time. It’s very flattering.”

Pop that pops Haim’s second album revels in its retro cheese

Shooter Jennings and his flashy jacket. (Courtesy)

Haim’s second album might be titled Something to Tell You, but its breezy lyrical content (heartbreak, romance, romantic heartbreak) doesn’t exactly have a ton to say. That’s perfectly fitting, though, especially in an era when even the most frivolous pop stars seem determined to make (often misguided) political statements. By unironically embracing the lush sounds of ’80s soft-rock and ’90s adult contemporary, the sisters Haim (Este, Danielle, Alana) have succeeded at making the uncool cool, and Something revels in its retro cheesiness. But that’s what makes it such a fun listen: “Nothing’s Wrong” and “You Never Knew” sound more like ’80s-era Christine McVie-led Fleetwood Mac songs than McVie’s own recent album with Lindsey Buckingham; “Ready for You” has a soulful George Michael vibe with soaring harmonies and an anthemic chorus; the stringsdriven “Found It in Silence” has a slight country-pop twang; “Kept Me Crying” shows off Danielle’s oldschool guitar chops; and ethereal, minimalist album closer “Night So Long” evokes ’90s Sarah McLachlan. Through it all, the sisters balance their sharp musicianship with slick production and catchy hooks (although nothing’s quite as catchy as breakout hit “The Wire”). It’s a lovely, blissed-out pop throwback. –Josh Bell

T THREE LOCATIONS IN THE LAS VEGAS VALLEY

he only medical and recreational dispensary on the Strip, Essence is easily accessible by Las Vegas’ 40 million annual visitors. “You have the Las Vegas Strip and Times Square—those are the most iconic pieces of real estate in the entire country,” CEO Armen Yemenidjian says. “It’s a historic occasion for Las Vegas to be selling recreational marijuana on the Strip.” With two other locations in town, Essence also provides the rest of Southern Nevada with a variety of quality products, offering premium strains from Desert Grown Farms, Essence’s state-of-

the-art, 54,000-squarefoot, pharmaceutical-grade cultivation center. “We pride ourselves on the quality of product that we carry,” Yemenidjian says, and “all the folks that work for us have a tremendous cannabis IQ.” An on-site registered nurse and a staff of highly trained consultants will make finding your favorite flower easy among strains like Jack Herer, OG Story and Black Afghan. Want to tantalize your taste buds or find a salve for pain relief? Essence’s premium edibles and lotions can put you on a path to better health and happiness.
