Ricky Martin enjoys success both on the Strip and on TV The last time I spoke with Ricky Martin, he was a bit emotional. Mostly anxious. His nerves were getting the best of him as his acting skills were about to be on full display. Martin was one of the stars of The

Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, the tense TV anthology exploring the murder of the iconic designer that aired in the first quarter of 2018 on the FX network. The international pop star played the role of

Antonio D’Amico, a model and designer and Versace’s longtime partner. “It was very challenging, a very dramatic story and I had some really insanely deep scenes,” he said. “I get a little emotional just talking about it because the level of focus you need to do a good job as an actor portraying a man suffering the loss of his partner, it’s heavy.” It was a big job, but he wouldn’t want it any other way. Martin is a born performer, a fact that’s obvious to anyone who’s seen his show All In at Park Theater at Park MGM. “I said yes to the role because we need to talk about this and shed some light on this story,” he said. “It feels great every time you finish a scene but it’s also very nerve-wracking. Once you do the shot, you can’t go back.” Since Assassination aired to great reviews—86 percent on Rotten Tomatoes— Martin has returned to his electrifying residency on the Strip and continues to thrill audiences with English and Spanish hits. He also released the fiery new single, “Fiebre,” with reggaeton duo and fellow Puerto Ricans Wisin and Yandel and returned to Las Vegas yet again to open the Billboard Latin Music Awards at the Mandalay Bay Events Center. Martin’s show at Park Theater is one of the biggest dance parties on the Strip. He opens with “Livin’ La Vida Loca” and doesn’t let up, powering through the dance-pop hits and soaring ballads that turned him into one of music’s brightest stars when the one-time member of teen group Menudo found fame on the U.S. charts. But then something magical happens: Martin switches into Spanish language hits like 2016 chart-topper “Vente Pa’ Ca” and his earlier, still-infectious “María,” and every last one of the thousands of concertgoers are out of their seats dancing right along with him. The energy behind those musical moments is there by design. “We wanted to go through my life in music with this show and it really doesn’t matter what the language is,” Martin said. “At the end of the day, when that amazing moment happens and those drums hit and those Latin sounds come in, no matter where you’re from, you react.” Whether on television or on stage, Martin knows how to connect with an audience. Martin plays Park Theater May 23 through June 3.

Persistence is ‘Sexxy’ Veteran dancer and choreographer Jennifer Romas created Sexxy, the topless revue at the Westgate Las Vegas, almost overnight after meeting the casino resort’s owner, David Siegel, more than three years ago. “He said, ‘So you’re the one who’s been emailing me,” Romas recalls with a laugh. Romas’ relentless drive to create her own show and make it the best it can be paid off this month when she inked a four-year deal to keep

That do-it-yourself desire is also the element that separates the show from other burlesque-style offerings around town. “Because I’m in the show, not just the producer, it’s different. I’m onstage every night. I don’t give myself a break,” Romas says. “I’ve never done anything less than full-out, and I expect that of my team, and they bring it to the table every day and night.”

Stage to Screen Netflix is the new digital home for great comedy and the Fluffy One is all over it. Vegas regular Gabriel Iglesias just signed on for two stand-up specials on the streaming network in addition to a multicamera series called Mr. Iglesias that finds the San Diegoborn funnyman playing a public high school teacher working with misfit kids. “When I was a kid, I wanted to be either a stand-up comedian or a teacher, so thanks to Netflix for supporting both of my career aspirations,” he told Variety. We’re not aware of any teacher who ever sold out Madison Square Garden. Catch Iglesias back on the Aces of Comedy series stage May 25-27 at the Terry Fator Theatre at The Mirage.

It’s common for super fans to dress like their idols when attending said star’s Las Vegas show. But you might not expect such stylish dedication from Kim Kardashian West, who went all out when taking in Cher’s Park Theater residency this month. With long, straight “Cher hair” and turquoise beads accenting a “Half-Breed”-influenced outfit, Kim sang along to “If I Could Turn Back Time” and tweeted: “I can’t take it @cher is seriously the most amazing beautiful person ever!!!” The Celine Dion-Deadpool team up is becoming a viral sensation. Dion’s new song “Ashes”—recorded in Las Vegas at The Studio at the Palms—is part of the Deadpool 2 movie soundtrack, and the hilarious music video features a sassy dance routine by the wisecracking superhero (played by Ryan Reynolds) that threatens to steal Celine’s spotlight. Don’t worry, she gets back at him in the end, and shows off the humor that Vegas fans adore during her shows at the Colosseum. The Westgate is now home to the only female headlining magician in Las Vegas: The Magic of Jen Kramer. A Yale grad, Kramer is renowned for her sleight-of-hand skills and has been featured on Penn & Teller: Fool Us. Sex Tips for Straight Women from a Gay Man at the Anthony Cools Showroom at Paris Las Vegas is switching up the cast. Reality TV’s Scheana Shay and singer/actor Chester Lockhart wrapped their run recently in the adult-comedy sensation and have been replaced by versatile performers Katie Kenner and Douglas Katch Gray.

If cabana size is really important to you but you want a more intimate experience, head to Liquid Pool Lounge at Aria. Eight spacious cabanas share several dipping pools and a deck that overlooks the main pool area. There’s also a menu full of specialty cocktails like the Island Getaway and Cucumber Essence, or try a specialty mojito like the Fresa Cubano with Bacardi dragon berry rum, lime sour, fresh mint and soda.

If you want to splurge even more, book one of the cabanas inside the Pavilion at Moorea Beach Club at Mandalay Bay. The Pavilion is tucked away from the main area of the topless pool club, affording its guests some privacy. There’s a pool and lounge area that the Pavilion cabanas share, and inside each open-air cabana are daybeds and lounge chairs. Also at Mandalay Bay is another pool club that tends to party a little harder than Moorea: Daylight Beach Club, which hosts musical guests from hip-hop to EDM. When not in the water, guests can relax in the bohemian-style cabanas on the perimeter of the pool. Start with dessert. It’s not often such a thing is recommended, but when the desserts are as delicious as they are at Lemongrass, it’s important to make sure you have enough room in your belly to savor every bit of them. The mainstay Thai restaurant at Aria, which also delves into the cuisine of other Asian countries including China, Singapore and Malaysia, does many dishes well, but some of the best are the sweet courses. Bua loi features rice flour dumplings in a coconut milk broth that is so comforting. Coconut ice cream is a simple name for a dessert with many components. The namesake ice cream sits on top of coconut sticky rice and is flanked by shaved coconut, coconut jelly, black jelly and jackfruit. The coconut desserts reinforce a flavor found throughout the menu and Thai cuisine. Tom Kha soup, for instance, features the exotic Aria flavor permeating the broth. Red curry features coconut milk, pineapple, basil, bell pepper, bamboo shoots and Thai eggplant and pops with bold tastes. Creating new memories through the cocktail experience After more than a dozen years spent bartending, Rupert King decided it was time for a change, so he accepted a management position at Minus5 Ice Bar at Mandalay Bay. Before that, King bartended on the East Coast, and when he moved to Las Vegas 15 years ago, he was a flair bartender both on the Strip and downtown. While he was the manager of the original Las Vegas Minus5, he helped open Minus5’s Monte Carlo location, and that’s where he connected with the MGM Resorts family. “I wanted to learn and develop and MGM was the company that I wanted to learn with,” King said. When Minus5 at Monte Carlo shuttered to make way for the hotel’s transition into Park MGM, King was tapped to be the director of beverage.

“I make sure we’re on the right path and the product that was on paper is actually translated to the guest,” said the native of Vermont. One of the new venues that King is most proud in helping launch is Juniper Cocktail Lounge. “Every beverage that we present is a moment where people can stop and stare and say, ‘Wow,’” said King, who went on to explain why Park MGM’s transformation will capture guests’ attention: “This renovation will wow them. I would say that our cocktail program is very unique—it’s whimsical and fun. For me, if I’m going out, I’m going out to have a moment. I want to have that memory—and Park MGM is going to create that special memory.” –Kiko Miyasato

Monique Clements As director of marketing and business development at The Shops at Crystals, Monique Clements has seen Las Vegas evolve into the shopper’s paradise it is today. She spoke to Las Vegas Magazine’s Sarah Feldberg recently. What are some trends you’ve noticed? Things that you never would think are cool are cool, like Balenciaga’s dad sneaker— this chunky sneaker that you used to make fun of your dad for wearing, and now it’s the hottest-selling item and everyone’s wearing them at Coachella. Tell us about some of your retailers. Hermes opened a store here with us when the center opened. Their business has been so great that they’re opening a new store on June 15 that will be triple the size of their first store. It will be right off Aria’s valet, a beautiful two-story store with a beautiful staircase in the middle and VIP rooms. We have the largest Louis Vuitton in the United States, and it’s one of the few Louis Vuittons in the world to carry every single thing the brand makes. Describe food and beverage highlights. We have Mastro’s, which not only is an amazing world-renowned restaurant, but it’s set inside a treehouse in the middle of the center. So it’s the best peoplewatching, fine-dining experience. We’re proud to also have Cucina by Wolfgang Puck, which is a wonderful Italian concept. Describe your personal style. I am a new mom to twin girls. I’ve expanded my wardrobe to include more flat shoes than I’ve had before, more pants because I’m always bending over and chasing after some kid. One of the trends that I love that has been really convenient for my new life is this backpack trend. I have the Fendi monster bag, which I’m obsessed with.

Shakira, yet only recently has Balvin begun to enjoy significant crossover appeal. The main reason? His refusal to abandon his roots. Despite being fluent in English, Balvin records and performs almost exclusively in Spanish. Also, he continues to make his home in Medellín. Such decisions speak to Balvin’s determination to rewrite the script that says

Latin artists must conform to crack the mainstream. “I want to invite the mainstream into my world and to my sound and to what I’m doing,” he told The Fader magazine in 2016. Judging by recent invitations to perform with Beyoncé and Cardi B at Coachella—and his upcoming 27-date U.S. tour—it’s safe to say Balvin’s strategy is working. –Matt Jacob

Pulling Out the Stops With her massive voice and extensive catalog of pop hits, Pink doesn’t need to do anything more in concert than show up and sing, but that’s never been her style. For years, Pink has been mounting some of the most elaborate and mesmerizing stage shows in pop music, putting herself front and center in breathtaking stunts that would be right at home in a Cirque du Soleil production. Fans have become so accustomed to her penchant for acrobatics that some wondered whether she’d descend from the top of the stands when she sang the national anthem at this year’s Super Bowl. The singer’s current tour supporting her 2017 Beautiful Trauma album features her tumbling down from above the stage to open each show, with further acrobatics as she runs through a series of hits. When she literally flies around the arena during the show, still singing every word of every song live, she shows that her stellar voice is just the beginning of her talents. –Josh Bell

In the world of progressive rock and postrock, instrumental acts are some of the biggest stars, including bands like Animals as Leaders and Explosions in the Sky. You can add San Diego instrumental quartet Chon to that list, thanks to its growing fan base and appearances on the Billboard album charts. With music that combines influences of heady rock subgenres with jazzy, electronic and even surf-rock sounds, Chon has a unique style that reflects the band’s Southern California beachside origins. That’s also reflected in the welcoming title of Chon’s sophomore album, Homey, and that combination of intricate musicianship and laid-back accessibility has helped Chon reach a wider audience than many other wonky prog-rock bands. Legendary Sound Catch a part of the British Invasion this week at Golden Nugget when Eric Burdon and The Animals jump onstage. The band may be best remembered for probably the most famous version of “The House of the Rising Sun,” which many music experts call the first folk-rock hit, considered to be a classic of British pop. A word of caution to this year’s acts: You better bring it! Last year’s headliner, the ageless Iggy Pop, tore through a scorching set featuring both solo hits and favorites from The Stooges. It was widely regarded as one of the best shows of 2017. This year’s headliners include At the Drive-In. Now on its second reunion, the El Paso, Texas-based post-hardcore band is ferocious live. Rounding out the top acts are NOFX, masters of skate punk for 35 years, and politically driven hard rockers Rise Against. But there’s so much more to PRB besides the festival, including pool parties, a comedy show, poker tournaments and movies. Then there are all those rad late-night club shows with bands like The Bronx and Fishbone. LIVE MUSIC yeah, it was being discussed when we played last year there, and we were very excited about it but had no idea it would catch on as much as it has. I mean, we were excited to do the residency in Las Vegas, but I was walking the National Mall in D.C. back in March and people were stopping me at the National Mall saying, “We’ve got tickets for your show in Vegas.” Everywhere that I go people that I had no idea would even follow blink-182 were going, “Oh, man! I’m stoked about your new residency in Vegas. That’s going to be awesome!” It’s taken on a life of its own that we didn’t even expect. There definitely has not been a punk rock residency, so it’s a watershed moment for both Vegas headliner history and punk rock. Yeah, we’re excited, and we’re excited to do it at the Palms. They’re redoing the whole hotel and it’s going to be a really cool new experience and we’re excited. Are you going change up the set lists for people who want to come more than once? That’s the idea, is that every weekend or every show would be slightly different from the others. That being said, we were going to have a full production, a lot of moving lights and elements that kind of anchor the show, so there will be standards that we play every night and then the other songs we’ll move around and do new stuff or deeper cuts, but we don’t want to do the same show every night for 16 shows. What about special guests? Are there going to be opening acts, or will anyone join you onstage for a song? Absolutely. We want our friends to come out and join us onstage. It depends on who’s in town that weekend or who wants to come out that weekend, but depending on who’s in town and their availability we want them to come out and do different things, make every single show as special as we can.

If you head down to the Fremont Street Experience on almost any night of the week, you can enjoy free musical entertainment, from cover bands like Spandex Nation and Wonderboogie, offering up their versions of big hits from the past and present. But during the summer, the Downtown Rocks concert series brings big-name touring acts to the FSE stage, providing top-notch concerts for fans at the same price as the attraction’s ongoing entertainment: absolutely free. This year’s concert series kicks off on May 25 with two of the biggest acts from the ’90s alt-rock boom: low-key roots/punk band Cracker and hard rockers Candlebox. Cracker broke out with wry, catchy hits “Low” and “Get Off This,” and continues to produce witty, jangly music. Seattle’s Candlebox rode the grunge wave with hits “Far Behind” and “You,” breaking up in 2000 but reuniting six years later, and this year is marking its 25th anniversary as a band. The celebration of ’90s alt-rock continues on June 30 with the annual Summerland Tour, headlined by tour organizers Everclear, whose hits include “Santa Monica,” “Father of Mine” and “Wonderful.” Everclear has headlined nearly every year of the festival founded by band frontman Art Alexakis, and this year they’ll be supported by fellow ’90s radio favorites Marcy Playground (“Sex and Candy”) and Local H (“Bound for the Floor”). The series switches gears a bit on July 4 for country superstar Billy Ray Cyrus, still best known for his 1992 dance-crazespawning hit “Achy Breaky Heart.” In recent years, Cyrus has been focused as much on acting as on music, with starring roles in the drama series Doc and the sitcom Still the King (not to mention appearing on Hannah Montana alongside his daughter Miley), but he continues to release new music, including last year’s Set the Record Straight. Rock returns on July 14 with The Cult, longtime hard rockers known for ’80s hits “She Sells Sanctuary,” “Fire Woman” and “Love Removal Machine,” led by brooding frontman Ian Astbury and guitar virtuoso Billy Duffy. Southern rockers Molly Hatchet, whose 1979 hit “Flirtin’ With Disaster” remains a staple of classicrock radio, take the stage on Aug. 11. The series isn’t only about celebrating rockers of the past, though; on Aug. 25, current rock-radio favorites Halestorm, led by powerhouse vocalist Lzzy Hale, will be the headliners. Known for recent hits like “It’s Not You,” “I Get Off,” “Love Bites (So Do I)” and “Amen,” as well as relentless touring, the band should bring in some welcome youthful energy along with polished musicianship and a well-crafted live show. Downtown Rocks wraps up on Sept. 29 with two acts from the ’80s hair metal scene: L.A. rockers Ratt, whose catchy hits, including “Round and Round” and “Lay It Down,” are key building blocks of glam metal’s signature sound; and former Skid Row frontman Sebastian Bach, whose piercing voice was behind hits like “18 and Life” and “I Remember You.” There are still some open slots on the schedule, though, so expect downtown to keep rocking even more throughout the summer.
