On Fire

Fuel Girls of ‘Inferno’ keep things hot Inferno is not your typical Las Vegas magic show and that has a lot to do with the Fuel Girls. Teta-Maria Stone, for example, is a performer unlike any Las Vegas has ever seen. “If you’d seen me 15 years ago, I was a completely different person,” says the dancer, aerialist and stuntwoman originally from Gloucestershire in southwest England. “I had never been abroad and I was very shy, a bit of a ballet geek. It’s not that I was not a good girl, I just wasn’t one to put myself out there and be very expressive. Finding the world of cabaret and circus enabled me to grow into a person capable of expressing myself in a way I otherwise wouldn’t have been able to.” Indeed, tattoos and fire may not suit a ballet geek. For the last 10 years, Stone has been a member of the Fuel Girls, a traveling troupe of multiskilled entertainers performing pyrotechnic feats at various festivals and events. When Inferno launched at Paris Las Vegas earlier this year, the show’s producers deftly paired the Fuel Girls’ unique talents with Swedish illusionist Joe Labero for a fiery, magical spectacular that quickly distinguished itself. “The Fuel Girls have changed a lot over the years and when I first joined, there were (different) stunts,” Stone says. “But the concept has always been that whatever the boys can do, we can do better, and in a bikini. Over the years we have added more trained dancers and performers but we still have that rock-and-roll image. We’re just highly skilled at the same time.” Inferno marks the first time the Fuel Girls have collaborated with a magician or any other artist for a large-scale production, but since the girls have a wide range of skills— many are choreographers, too—the adjustment process has gone smoothly. Stone says the show is always evolving and she appreciates the opportunity to learn different illusions. “It was a childhood dream of mine to be a magician’s assistant,” she laughs. “But the aerial portion is my favorite number in the show and main act. It’s a very layered act with some amazing pyrotechnics and the backdrop of all the girls’ choreography. It’s a great picture.” And Inferno has provided more than an opportunity for the Fuel Girls to expand their repertoire. For Stone, the show has offered an education in all things Las Vegas. “I had never been so I didn’t know what to expect, and also I’d always been quite fascinated with Las Vegas,” she says. “It’s been quite different that what we expected. There’s a lot of natural beauty and interesting places to explore beyond the Strip. We spend a lot of time downtown in the Arts District and I really like the vibe down there, but we like to get out into nature and do some adventuring at Red Rock and the Valley of Fire, too.”

A New Home Eddie Griffin is officially a Vegas guy. He’s lived in Las Vegas for nearly a decade, recently wrapped a multiyear run at the Rio and now the versatile funnyman, named one of the 100 Greatest Stand-Up Comedians of All Time by Comedy Central and star of movies including Undercover Brother and John Q, has launched a new residency at the Sayers Club at SLS.

“It’s very classy and it’s intimate, which is the way comedy should be presented,” Griffin says about his new Strip headquarters. “SLS is just a sexy spot, and to be right on the Strip is a big move. That property is conducive to comedy in its natural form.” Catch the Eddie Griffin Experience at 8 p.m. Monday through Wednesday.

All The Vegas Ruby Lewis “I wanted to do something biographical because I knew it was going to be super challenging, but it wasn’t until I’d gotten the part and started doing my research on Marilyn that I was like, whoa, this is my dream role. Now that I am old enough to understand everything she went through and even relate to a few of the things, I’m connecting to it in such a crazy way that it hasn’t been difficult for me to drop into her space. That, to me, is what you want because I’m going to be able to do the show artistically and hopefully do right by her and leave people with an impression of who she was. That’s my job, to entertain but also to enlighten, in a way. I feel like I’ve been training for this my whole life. Among the celebs partying and taking in the view from the 55th floor of the Palms during Apex Social Club’s Memorial Day weekend grand opening were model and actress Emily Ratajkowski, Empire actress Serayah, Internet sensation The Fat Jew (aka Josh Ostrovsky) and Vanderpump Rules star Scheana Shay. Of course, it’s easy to draw the stars when your DJ and performer lineup includes hip-hop legend Nas, Tonight Show and Roots bandleader Questlove and blink-182 drummer Travis Barker. T-Mobile Arena has been around for two years and hosted some of the biggest concerts on the planet, but few artists have captivated a crowd at this Strip super-venue the way Pink did recently during her Beautiful Trauma tour stop. She rolled through her hits, bounced around the stage with an army of dancers and even flew all over the arena with an aerial routine that would impress Cirque du Soleil’s acrobats. Lucky for Vegas, Pink is coming back to T-Mobile on April 12. Mirage headliners Boyz II Men made some Vegas sports history, singing the national anthem prior to the Las Vegas Aces’ first home game at Mandalay Bay Events Center. The city’s new WNBA team got an extra boost from a halftime performance by Jabbawockeez. “X” Burlesque recently celebrated 16 years of performances on the Strip with a red carpet reception at the Flamingo followed by a performance at Bugsy’s Cabaret featuring new set pieces, music and dance numbers.

Tonight’s Always the Night Many songs in Rod Stewart’s resident show at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace sound exactly like you expect—everything from “Reason to Believe” from his 1971 album Every Picture Tells a Story to “Rhythm of My Heart,” recorded 20 years later. Oddly enough, there’s not a single nod to the Brit-

ish-born singer’s 21st century success, the five volumes of standards he has intermittently released since 2002. Perhaps that’s best, since the Colosseum crowd seems ready to rock, and detours into Frank Sinatra territory seem destined to be overshadowed by the rest of his oeuvre.

What Stewart does deliver is a glimpse into his roots: the kinds of rock, blues and folk covers that informed his earliest work. Among them are “Sweet Little Rock ’n’ Roller” and a version of “Proud Mary” that gives Stewart’s backing vocalists a chance to stretch their legs—literally. –Las Vegas Magazine Staff

Enter the Surreal You’re not dreaming—you’re KÀ-ing. And if you’ve got vertigo, grab your seat-rests as that vertical stage transforms into an enormous tilt-a-whirl—eventually standing straight on end—as performers scamper up, down and try to hang on. One of Cirque du Soleil’s most vigorous exercises in athletic mysticism, KÀ was named for the Egyptian idea of ka. Brought to theatrical life, in a massive theater by 80-plus artists—chock-full of acrobats, puppetry and martial arts—KÀ tells the tale of “the coming of age of a young man and a young woman.” Translation: gravity-defying action as spear-toting warriors track the royal brother and sister, who wind up separated, with sister fleeing on a boat caught in a violent storm and escaping danger on a flying machine. Brother is helped along by a member of the court. They encounter fantastical sea creatures and experience the Wheel of Death. It’s Gonna Get Loud Burly and British, the Tenors of Rock are a five-man font of classic rock anthems. “The earliest we go is The Beatles and the latest is Bon Jovi, so we skip through a wide range,” says founder Gareth Richards. The big-voiced Brits—Richards and his brother, Dai, plus Jonathan Williams, Tommy Sherlock, and Jimmy Denning—offer inventive adaptations on rock tunes: performing “Stairway to Heaven” on a staircase, harmonizing barbershop-style

Rose Gold Besides the seriously delicious food created by Giada De Laurentiis, the celebrity chef’s newest restaurant, Pronto by Giada at Caesars Palace, also offers a full menu of wines and cocktails. Take a seat at the intimate bar and choose a glass of California or Italian wine or choose from three different cocktail categories—classic, Giada’s faves and signature. Under the signature portion of the menu, you’ll find the Rose Gold, a delicate-tasting cocktail. It’s mixed with Plymouth gin, Lillet Rose and Giffard crème de pamplemousse rose.

Depth Perception The closest one can get to the deep blue sea without driving four hours from Las Vegas might just be at the south end of the Strip. Shark Reef Aquarium has allowed visitors to get up close and personal with marine life for 17 years, whether separated from the various Shark Reef inhabitants by a waterproof transparent partition or brought together at a touch pool. The latest addition to Shark Reef Aquarium is Polar Journey, an experience that starts out with an introductory film on an overhead dome. A wall

projection allows children to feed virtual krill to underwater mammals, a pathway allows guests to walk over ice sheets that crack beneath their feet, sound-equipped chairs are programmed with the sounds of polar animals and a motion-ride “Sea Explorer” hits both the Arctic and the Antarctic for visits with harp seals, polar bears and penguins. You don’t need a parka and gloves to explore Polar Journey, or a wet suit to encounter the creatures of Shark Reef. A willingness to explore, however, is certainly mandatory. –Matt Kelemen

Double the Entertainment Donny and Marie Osmond love what they do. They’ve said it many times before when asked about the secret of their longevity, how they approach their show with as much enthusiasm and energy as they did as teenage variety show superstars. In September, the siblings will observe the 10th anniversary of the residency, a production structured not all that differently from the weekly broadcast on ABC from 1976 to 1979. Fans may find

themselves transported back to a time when Donny and Marie were peaking as youthful entertainers, but their subsequent solo careers also inspire the show. You’ll get Marie’s “Paper Roses” and a taste of her operatic chops. You may have seen magician Jen Kramer on Penn & Teller: Fool Us, replicating an act the dynamic duo first performed in the ’80s on Saturday Night Live, where she surprises the audience at the end by revealing she was demonstrating sleight-of-hand tricks while hanging upside down. It’s a good indication of the upbeat, family-friendly show you’ll get with The Magic of Jen Kramer at the Westgate Cabaret, one of the newest illusionist acts in Las Vegas and the only female headlining magician production in the city. The accomplished Kramer, named Female Magician of the Year by the International Magicians Society, incorporates mentalism, comedy and lots of audience participation. She makes a signed hundred-dollar bill appear inside a tube of lipstick and creates a largerthan-life social media page onstage. More magical surprises await for the audience, but for Kramer, it’s all about making smiles appear out of nowhere. “What it all comes down to for me is connecting with people. That’s why magic is such a meaningful part of my life,” she says. –Brock Radke

Sizzling Spectacle Thanks to Fantasy, the long-running female revue at Luxor, change has never looked so good. In the latest incarnation, you’ll find some of the most popular numbers from the past, and hot modern ones, too. The glamorous production features a rotating cast of eight dancers, with star singer and host Lorena Peril belting out songs like “Tush” and “Roxanne,” while “Can’t Stop the Feeling” works as an aural backdrop for the women’s sexy gyrations. But these ladies do more than gyrate—the

choreography for all the dance numbers is top-notch. “Me Too,” “Lady Marmalade,” “Caliente Fantasy” and “You’re My Fantasy” all get the sexy treatment, with acts including three girls frolicking on a bed and six dancers playing a seductive peek-a-boo with the stage curtains. To cool you off a bit, Sean E. Cooper provides a James Brown impersonation that leaves you giggling and, as Peril performs “Natural Woman,” a dancer plays up and down the lengths of several poles, amazing you with her fitness level. –Nina King

A Cutting Wit

Comic, commentator and author Bill Maher doesn’t mince words and, in fact, prides himself on being brash, outspoken and candid about his views on, well, everything. Maher is the host of HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher, currently in its 15th season. Trump is a favorite target for Maher on the show and off, but even the recent royal wedding was not spared Maher’s caustic humor. His commentary and political satire have garnered a myriad of fans; in fact, Comedy Central ranked Maher at No. 38 on its 100 Greatest Stand-Up Comedians of All Time list. Philip Tzeng

Looking for food in all the right places It all started in Japan. After 10 years in the New York music industry, Philip Tzeng was fed up. He felt jaded about work, bitter about the snow, ready for a change. “I sold all my belongings and my apartment and moved to Japan,” says Tzeng, who spent two years teaching English abroad—and met his wife—before returning to the United States and settling in Las Vegas. Tzeng had always appreciated good food, but in Japan his interest blossomed. Once the dreams of burritos faded, he was entranced by local flavors. “I loved all the cuisine. I ate sushi three meals a day in Japan. I would literally eat it for breakfast.” Today, rainbow slices of raw fish make regular appearances on his Instagram feed, where Tzeng documents his culinary exploits under the handle @lasvegasfill. Though 10,000 followers tune in for his shots of tangled noodle pulls and tempura lobster tail, Tzeng says he’s still finding his visual style, using an iPhone X and a $60 light for images so brightly illuminated “it probably looks like I’m about to dissect a frog.” The highest compliment he gets is when commenters ask about his camera rig, assuming he’s wielding a DSLR instead of a smartphone. But for Tzeng, the photo is just the medium to pay tribute to the cooking. Before he was on Instagram, he was a prolific Yelper, and even without social media, he says he’d still be going out, sampling Las Vegas’ restaurant scene, taking friends on culinary tours and indulging in everything from Joël Robuchon’s French fine dining to Carson Kitchen’s modern comfort fare. Dining out about four nights a week does have some side effects. He rarely grocery shops, and restaurant leftovers often appear in the morning. “Foie gras for breakfast would not be entirely surprising,” Tzeng says. “I grew up in a household where we would have the leftovers from the night before for breakfast.” And it’d be a shame to waste that gorgeous food. –Sarah Feldberg

You’ll undoubtedly recognize many of the dishes on the menu of Citizens Kitchen & Bar in Mandalay Bay. Heck, you’ve probably served a few of those yourself. But you’ve probably never gotten quite the quality and flavor that you’ll find in the comfort foods in the openspace eatery at the beginning of restaurant row in the resort. The artichoke dip here would take over any Super Bowl party. It features spinach and is taken up a notch from the average dip by a fivecheese combination: Swiss, mozzarella, Boursin and cream make a rich base with Parmesan on top adding some extra zip. Another play on the familiar is the BBQ chicken salad. This is one of those kitchensink salads with each element—onions rings, chicken, avocado, grilled corn, black beans and pico de gallo—working together to create a Tex-meets-Mex style of salad with an array of textures and tastes. Although those multiple flavors could end up fighting each other, the sweetness of the corn, creaminess of the avocado and tanginess of the barbecue sauce combine for a memorable course that can be shared or eaten as an entrée. Those looking for a heftier main dish should stop at the house specialty: prime rib dinner. This meaty behemoth is cooked to order so diners can enjoy the slab of beef at the temperature of their choosing—why anyone would go

more than medium rare is a question we can’t answer, but each to his own. The meat is tender and juicy and the horseradish sauce that comes with it punches the whole thing up. The loaded baked potato and steamed broccoli remind you that this is an American dinner, dag nab it! If you’d prefer a sandwich, the turkey avocado makes a great choice. Muenster cheese, sprouts, lemon aioli and tomato, plus a heaping portion of turkey and a generous amount of avocado, sit between two slices of cranberry walnut bread. The flavors create a hearty, rustic sandwich. Time for a cocktail? Keep it simple with a blueberry spritz. Skyy Blueberry vodka, white cranberry juice and sparkling wine remind the drinker that sometimes the best combinations are the easiest. This is a perfect summer spritzer. Calling desserts large is understating the size of the sweets at Citizens Kitchen. Order as many as you like as long as that order includes the carrot cake. The sweetness of fluffy orange cake is complemented by the sour cream cheese glaze.

General manager makes a splash on the Strip This week we celebrate fathers. And this Father’s Day is especially important for Ryan Kelly; it’s his first as a dad—he and his wife welcomed a baby girl earlier this year. “I’m excited,” he said, when talking about the holiday. “I love being a dad.” Speaking of fathers, Kelly, who is currently the general manager at Influence, The Pool at The LINQ, followed in his dad’s footsteps when he began his career on the Strip. “My dad has always worked in the casino industry, so I was always around it,” Kelly said. Kelly’s first job was as a lifeguard at the Flamingo pool. “I’ve been around pools ever since,” he said, including jobs as a cabana host at Planet Hollywood Resort and a pool supervisor and assistant manager for Flamingo’s dayclub, the GO Pool, which he helped launch.

In 2015, after The LINQ’s rebranding, Kelly joined the resort as the pool’s general manager and helped create the 21-and-over pool club. “My main goal was to build a really cool vibe centered around great customer service,” he said. Besides creating a good poolside atmosphere, Kelly is totally hands-on with all aspects of Influence—hiring, training, helping create the cocktail menu and working with marketing and PR, as well as booking the DJs and talent. “I think what keeps me coming back is this is probably one of the coolest jobs, to be honest,” he said. “You come into work and your job is to throw a party every day, and to make sure that people coming through the doors are having a great time and enjoying themselves. What are some trends for 2018? As far as the men’s world is concerned, we’ve seen quite a bit of blazers, quite a bit of logo—our company’s calling it logomania—quite a bit of short-sleeve shirts making a big comeback. Track suits are pretty strong now and mixing them with sport coats, which I’ve never seen before. Lots of statement sneakers, and quite a bit of denim in new colors It gives the guy an added choice, an opportunity to step out of the box. ... For ladies this season, brights and sequins in punchy pinks, sunny yellows and eye-catching hues. Statement sleeves, floral dresses and ruffles. Logo bags have re-emerged as a way to make a fashion-savvy statement, and in shoes, the pointed toe and Cinderella styles with sequins are quite popular. Why do you think Las Vegas has become so popular for shopping? ... In the last five or six years, we have become a fashion destination. Where before (visitors) used to go to cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York to do quite a bit of their shopping, now they look to us. We have just about every major designer you can think of in our city. The great thing in our store is we have all of those designers under one roof. What tips would you give to those trying to achieve that perfect look while shopping at Neiman Marcus? Schedule an appointment with a personal shopper. Personal shoppers have a level of experience that allows them to work throughout all the different departments in the store. Letting It All Hang Out For music listeners of a certain generation, all it takes is two words (“It’s been …”) to launch them into the chorus of Barenaked Ladies’ ultra-catchy 1998 hit “One Week,” which remains the Canadian band’s biggest-ever U.S. single. While BNL delivered a few more hits in the U.S. with “It’s All Been Done,” “Pinch Me” and “Call and Answer,” the band remains a bit of a cult phenomenon outside of its native

country. In Canada, BNL is in the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and has won multiple Juno Awards (the Canadian equivalent of the Grammys), and still regularly places in the upper reaches of the album charts with new releases. In the U.S., BNL are still strongly associated with ’90s alt-rock, which is probably why the band’s current U.S. tour features fellow

’90s/’00s radio favorites Better Than Ezra (“Good”) and KT Tunstall (“Black Horse and the Cherry Tree”). Anyone who’s heard “One Week” can tell that the members of BNL have quite a sense of humor, and the band is known for loose, lively concerts full of jokes and banter. Nothing Distracts From the Music If nothing else, Buckethead practices truth in advertising. The virtuosic guitarist indeed wears a bucket on his head, usually one modeled after the type that KFC uses to hold fried chicken. It’s just one of the musician’s many eccentricities, but as odd as his persona may be, none of it gets in the way of his amazing talents on the guitar. As a person, Buckethead is a bit of an enigma, but when he straps on a guitar and starts playing, he tells you all you need to know about him. Buckethead is also incredibly prolific, releasing hundreds of albums of his own as well as collaborating with everyone from Les Claypool and Iggy Pop to Snoop Dogg and actor Viggo Mortensen. He was a member of Guns N’ Roses for several years, contributing to the band’s epic 2008 album Chinese Democracy. Taking Us Back

When most of us think early rock ’n’ roll influencers and the city of Memphis, one artist immediately comes to mind: Elvis. But in 1967, another Memphis act began making some significant noise. Combining elements of soul and pop, The Box Tops hit it big virtually overnight, thanks to “The Letter,” a snappy tune that clocked in under two minutes and swiftly reached the top of the charts. The Box Tops would release three albums from late 1967 to mid-1968, producing additional hits such as “Cry Like a Baby” and “Soul Deep.” Alas, as Elvis’ career skyrocketed, success proved to be fleeting for The Box Tops, who disbanded in early 1970. They reunited in 1996, when touring regularly until lead vocalist Alex Chilton’s unexpected death in 2010. Five years passed before founding members Gary Talley and Bill Cunningham joined forces to take The Box Tops back out on the road. Jazzy Nights One certainly couldn’t blame singer-songwriter Paula Cole if she penned a follow-up to her biggest hit, “Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?” and titled it “Where Has All the Time Gone?” Cole was just 29 when she took home the 1998 Best New Artist Grammy for “Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?” (which garnered seven nominations in all). Speed ahead a couple of decades, and Cole finds herself two months removed from her 50th birthday and doing what many artists do when they reach that milestone: returning to her roots. Which in Cole’s case meant reconnecting with jazz, the genre that first led her to a microphone. Interestingly, to get back to those roots, Cole took a New-Age route: She launched a Kickstarter campaign that raised nearly $80,000, which funded her eighth studio album, Ballads. Released in August, the 20-song collection features the Massachusetts native covering jazz, folk and American roots classics from the 1930s to 1960s. Among the legends she pays tribute to are Billie Holiday, Nat King Cole, John Coltrane, Miles Davis and Nina Simone. Now Cole is bringing those artists—along with

Minds of Metal Heavy metal can come from anywhere—from the Pacific Northwest to New Jersey. Queensrÿche and Skid Row come from opposite ends of the United States, but they have a lot in common. Both formed in the 1980s, they both reached high levels of musical fame and they have both withstood lineup changes and drama to keep going more than 30 years on. Queensrÿche originally hails from Bellevue, Wash. Its third album, Operation: Mindcrime is considered one of the greatest heavy metal albums of all time. The concept album tells the story of a recovering drug addict so disheartened with how corrupt society is he joins a group that, when it comes to assassinating political leaders, isn’t so innocent. Skid Row hails from Toms River, N.J. Its eponymous debut album sold more than 5 million copies, featuring anthems “18 and Life” and “I Remember You.” Slave to the Grind, the glam metal unit’s next album, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. –Jason Harris

Just Scratching the Surface

Band’s Vegas shows sure to spotlight newest offerings Nine Inch Nails will be launching its first fullscale U.S. tour since 2014 this fall, but before that, Las Vegas audiences will be the only ones in America to get to see the band live, with three packed shows this week. It’s sure to be an immersive experience, thanks to the band’s intricate, multilayered music, performed by NIN mastermind Trent Reznor and his collaborators. That includes Reznor’s current creative partner Atticus Ross, who in 2016 was named the first permanent NIN member aside from Reznor. Joining Reznor and Ross are veteran NIN touring musicians Robin Finck, Alessandro Cortini and Ilan Rubin. All five play multiple instruments, contributing to NIN’s varied sound with a mix of electronics and live instrumentation.

With an experimental yet accessible sound that appeals equally to metalheads and goths, the band’s hits go back to 1989 debut album Pretty Hate Machine, with singles “Head Like a Hole,” “Terrible Lie” and “Down In It.” NIN’s second album, the massively popular The Downward Spiral, spawned ’90s radio favorites “Closer,” “March of the Pigs” and “Hurt,” which was famously covered by Johnny Cash on his final studio album in 2002. Although NIN is closely associated with the ’90s alt-rock boom, the sound has never been tied to a particular era or movement, and Reznor has continued producing hits over the years, from “The Hand That Feeds” to “Survivalism” to “Came Back Haunted.” NIN’s newest release

is Bad Witch, the third in a trilogy of EPs that includes Not the Actual Events and Add Violence. Bad Witch will be officially released a few days after the band’s Vegas shows, but the moody and atmospheric single “God Break Down the Door” (featuring Reznor showing off his saxophone skills) is out now, and the band may debut a few more songs during this week’s concerts. The conclusion of the EP trilogy took longer than expected, but Reznor told BBC Radio recently that it was all about getting things right. “The reason this has been delayed is because it took us a while for—what has become the third EP—to reveal itself to us,” he said. As with everything NIN does, Bad Witch and these new shows are handled with care and precision. –Josh Bell

live music Oh, it did stick with me big time, No. 1, because I was pregnant. I remember the whole show. I remember how it felt, because obviously we knew that we were about to take a break. Everybody knew that I was going to have a baby but we hadn’t announced yet that we were going to take an actual career break, too, to do other things outside of Sugarland. So it was a bittersweet moment. There were tears that night, for sure. How is touring as a mom different for you? (laughs) Everything is different now. Touring is different, life is different. Everything is different. I’m happy to be able to bring Magnus with me. I couldn’t do it if I weren’t able to. So he’ll be out and about this summer with me on the road. It’s fun, because there are superheroes and dinosaurs everywhere, all over the bus. Were you surprised that the (new Sugarland) songs came so fast? We’ve done this for so long together that we were very pleased to see that we still had that quick rhythm with each other; that we’re able to hear each other and just go. Even for us, we were both pleasantly shocked with how quickly we wrote the album, in like nine days, and we recorded it in four. I think it’s a testimony not only to Kristian’s preproduction skills that he has, and what he brought in from a track standpoint as a writer, but also we had a lot to say. We were ready to say it, and so things came efficiently and quickly. Is your Broadway experience as Roxie Hart in Chicago influencing your approach to performing? Will fans see you pull some fancy new moves on the Still the Same Tour? I’ve always been pretty dancey and active, but I like to think, sure, that maybe there will be some new influence that you will see there onstage.

motherhood and stardom hasn’t stopped her from nurturing her growing ambitions. You and Kristian played your final Sugarland show together in Las Vegas at Mandalay Beach before your hiatus. Did that last concert stick with you?

Do you have plans beyond September for either Sugarland or solo work? Oh, my. You know, I would love to do more of everything, so it’s just a matter of time and timing for this record. We have been so pleased with the reaction from the fans, and if they continue to show us they want more, well, we will give them more. At the same time I know we have enjoyed some of the work that we’ve been doing. I know that definitely I have in terms of acting and stage. So I continue to nurture those relationships and hope to be able to do it all. I want it all.

There would be no backup dancers at the second night of blink-182’s Kings of the Weekend, no sentimental video montage of the band’s history or rigs set up for band members to fly over the crowds inside the Pearl Concert Theater. Instead, the trio played nearly 30 songs in front of a draped background, with drummer Travis Barker’s hard-thwacking intro to “Feeling This” kicking off the music after an introduction by a tiny Elvis impersonator. The sophomore show of Vegas’ first punkrock residency was on. The 16-show series has blink-182 performing at the Palms for three weekends this month then four consecutive weekends beginning in late October. The Memorial Day Weekend shows started with a sold-out Saturday night, and Sunday’s concert went off without a hitch save for bassist Mark Hoppus slipping and falling on his posterior after the acoustic set. Otherwise, he bounced and skipped around the stage tirelessly as guitarist Matt Skiba kept his feet firmly planted in front of his microphone. Two huge video monitors on either side of the stage zoomed in on the action, but Barker’s drum riser was prominent and elevated enough for every

seat in the house to get a good view of his powerhouse technique. The trio tore through back catalog songs “What’s My Age Again?,” “The Rock Show,” and “Anthem Part Two” before playing material from Skiba-era album California, including the song that inspired the residency’s name. Skiba has been with the band for more than three years, replacing founding guitarist Tom DeLonge without trying to replicate DeLonge’s stage presence or sing with a distinctive nasal delivery. Although he mostly stayed anchored to his place on the stage, he perfectly counterbalanced his kinetic bandmates. Although the scenery was sparse— Hoppus and Skiba played on a stage floor illustrated with a “Welcome to Fabulous blink-182” sign and art adapted from the California album cover—a few effects shook things up occasionally. Huge columns of smoke streamed from the front of the stage for the first of several times during “Anthem Part Two,” while fire came into play for “Bored.” Hoppus spoke for the band, encouraging the audience to pay attention to Skiba’s guitar playing during “Down” and forbidding them to smile during “Adam’s Song,” which hadn’t been played on tour since 2009. Several other songs that had been out of live rotation for a while were part of the residency set list, including “Mutt” and “The Party Song.” Blink slowed things down for a three-song acoustic set, but once the theater was invaded by giant inflatable pizza slices, pretzels and blowup dolls the atmosphere took an appropriately adolescent turn. “I’m never touring again,” said Hoppus after blink played “Kings of the Weekend,” pointing at the ground beneath his shoes. “I’m just going to play Las Vegas.”
