Ready for triumphant Vegas return Barry Manilow last performed in Las Vegas at the Paris Theater for two years, but before that he spent 2005 to 2010 at the Las Vegas Hilton. He’s returned to the legendary property, now Westgate Las Vegas, for a brand-new residency dubbed Manilow Las Vegas: The Hits Come Home, and he couldn’t be more excited. Brock Radke spoke with Manilow about the comfy confines of his Vegas home, what’s new with his show and what hasn’t changed regarding his love affair with music. Your music is some of the first I experienced, specifically listening to my mom’s copy of This One’s For You as a very young child. Do people say things like this to you a lot? Yeah, they do, and I couldn’t be happier. Because what happens to all young artists that become successful overnight is (that) I was getting killed by the critics. I mean, killed. And then as the years go by, things begin to change, and then I hear stuff like this, that while I was getting killed there was a whole batch of people who were loving what they were hearing. While it was happening, I didn’t realize that. I just had to believe it was good. Has your creative process and method of songwriting changed over the years? No, I don’t think it has. I’m a melody guy. I miss the melodies on the radio. My writing style is the same as it has always been. I try to come up with as good a melody as I can and as great a lyric as I can. What has changed is the way I render the music. I’m very good with my computer and the machines we use to make music these days. I record my own vocals by myself, without an engineer, then I bring in an orchestrator and go into Capitol Records. But the lion’s share is just me, by myself in front of my computer.

The Westgate—where you performed when it was still the Las Vegas Hilton—has done a lot to recapture the excitement of a great Las Vegas entertainment legacy. Was that a big factor in your decision to return to the stage there? Yes. I’m so glad they haven’t touched the showroom. If you put long tables in that room instead of the theater seating, it would take you back to the days of Sinatra and Dean Martin. Showrooms just don’t look like that anymore and they even kept the name of the International Theater. Barbra (Streisand) opened it, followed by Elvis, and everyone from Aretha Franklin to Michael Bublé has played that stage. Even when I walk out for soundcheck, it really does feel like a very special place. And there are a lot of seats but it always feels intimate. I’ve been on the road for so many years playing for 10,000 people in arenas and that’s wonderful, but what I like to do most is connect with audiences. You can do that in an arena but it’s much easier and more powerful in a smaller room, and that’s what I love about the International. What kind of adjustments have you made to your show and your song selection? It’s interesting now. About five years ago, things started to

change in the audience, where before that you could do more album cuts. And I’ve had so many different albums and concepts, from big band to show tunes to jazz. I could do any of them and everyone would be happy. But then I realized some of (those songs) weren’t going over like they used to, that the audiences wanted to hear the hits. I would try to throw in an album cut and

they’d be OK with it but then I’d do “Can’t Smile Without You” and the roof would cave in. They were telling me what they wanted. As the audiences have grown older and younger, they want to hear the songs they know and I’m happy to do that, so I’ve changed my show around with most of the songs being familiar and that’s what I’m planning on doing. Maybe I’ll throw one or two in just for me.

The Future is Now It’s hard to discern what’s most impressive about Janelle Monáe. Is it her singular brand of futuristic dance-soulfunk-rock? Or is it the ease with which she seems to have crafted a separate, acclaimed career as an actress? She won the AAFCA Breakout Performance Award and the Black Film Critics Circle Rising Star Award in recognition of her striking performances in Moonlight and Hidden Figures, and

Monáe has most recently appeared (appropriately) as an android in an episode of Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams. The role aligns perfectly with her new album Sexy Computer, described by Rolling Stone as “artful, ambitious, determined, joys and inspiring.” Get ready to admire all the awesome aspects of Monáe when she takes the stage at the Pearl at the Palms on June 26.

Absolutely No Nonsense Take it from Wanda Sykes: Leave that Twitter alone. The Emmy Award-winning comedian was a behind-the-scenes part of the revival of Roseanne Barr’s ’90s sitcom Roseanne, but Sykes quit the show before Barr was fired after an infamous, controversial tweet. “It’s crazy when you deal with people. They’re one way to your face and then on social media, they turn into crazy people,” Sykes recently told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “For me, if I have something to say, I’ll say it to your face absolutely!” Sykes quickly moved on to other projects, including producing the game show Face Value, filming her next standup special and embarking on a tour that stops at Treasure Island on June 29.

Even superheroes need to party sometimes, and when they’re not saving the world they like to spend time in Las Vegas. The Black Panther himself, Chadwick Boseman, visited Drai’s Nightclub at The Cromwell recently to catch a performance from the king of Southern hiphop, Tip “T.I.” Harris. Also in the crowd was boxer Terence Crawford, who defeated Jeff Horn for the WBO welterweight title at MGM Grand Garden Arena earlier that night. You know him from America’s Got Talent and Penn & Teller: Fool Us, as well as his own show at the Flamingo, but Piff the Magic Dragon is a well-established citizen of the city. He recently found a fun way to give back with Piff’s Ping Pong Pifftacular, a star-studded tournament and fundraiser for Mission High School in downtown Las Vegas. Among the participating entertainers at the Flamingo’s Beach Club were “X” Burlesque producers Matt and Angela Stabile, comedian John Caparulo and the members of Tenors of Rock. How do you know when you’ve got the hottest new restaurant in the city? When the greatest expansion team in the history of major league sports decides to celebrate its historic season at your place. The Palms’ Scotch 80 Prime chef Barry S. Dakake welcomed the Vegas Golden Knights for a team dinner after the club’s run to the Stanley Cup Finals. Several players moved on to catch blink-182 in concert at the Pearl followed by a nightcap at the all-new rooftop lounge Apex Social Club.

The Green Room What the hell, Tom Green? What’s that you’re saying? What’s that we see onscreen? In Green’s latest endeavor, where he performs stand-up at Harrah’s Sunday and Monday in The Comedy Lineup show (John Caparulo performs the other nights), videos of his career in shock comedy intertwine with remembrances of those stunts he and his cohorts pulled off. His career is chock-full of those tricks, which he started as the host of a public access show that led to an MTV show and movies, including the critically panned, yet incredibly fascinating, Freddy Got Fingered. In the show, he offers up observations on such things as the folly of smartphones and what life was like when there were only landlines. He touches on his battle with testicular cancer (he had an MTV special and wrote a book about the subject) and manages jokes about that, too. Green may not be the original prankster, but he certainly has cemented his place in the pantheon of historical jokers. –Nina King

The Surreal World Keeping the Lounge Cool Stylish English crooner Matt Goss started his Las Vegas life at the Palms in 2009 before a long run at Caesars Palace from 2010 to 2016, where he transformed Cleopatra’s Barge into The Gossy Room with a modern cabaret-style show that became one of the Strip’s hottest tickets. In December, Goss opened his new residency at the 1 OAK space, transforming the booming nightclub into a sexy showroom with the help of his snare drum-tight band

Mystère, served up on a revolving stage inside a custom-built theater, is an amazingly visual acrobatic buffet. One aerialist performs within a giant metal cube. Another one flips, spins and twists on a vertical strip of fabric that appears to stretch up into infinity. Bungee jumpers bounce and swing as they scrape the ceiling, gymnasts turn a trampoline into an artistic canvas, and Japanese taiko drummers pound out infectious rhythms. All In the Family Yo: Welcome to Da Bronx—musically speaking, of course, courtesy of The Bronx Wanderers. Straight outta that storied New York City borough, this proudly Italian, family-centered ensemble rocks the house with ’50s, ’60s and ’70s hits. Daddy Vinny Adinolfi and his bambinos, Vinny “The Kid” and Nicky “Stix,” are aided by backup musicians as they wind back the clock. Opening with “The Wanderer,” they rocket into a Four Seasons medley. Intoxicating Burlesque The queen of burlesque, Dita Von Teese, launched her brand-new tour, Dita Von Teese and the Copper Coupe—presented by luxury vodka Absolut Elyx—this spring and is excited to bring the sexy show to Las Vegas at the House of Blues. “I think these are some of my biggest production numbers ever,” says Von Teese. “There are new visuals, new performers, some of my favorite performers doing different acts and it’s just a very different show. We have a new version of my famous martini glass act that includes probably my most extravagant costume yet.” That costume has to

It’s just another burlesque evolution for Von Teese, who briefly considered retirement before rediscovering her motivation and inspiration. “I thought I should practice what I preach in terms of ageism and the stereotypes of what a burlesque dancer should look like,” she says. “I’ve always fought for these shows to be multifaceted. I’m 45 and I should be willing to go out there and show the confidence we should have as we move through the different phases of life.” –Brock Radke

Rock Royalty

Legendary rocker continues his successful run in Las Vegas Since being knighted by Prince William in 2016, the 73-year-old Rod Stewart has completed a transformation from British rock’s enduring everyman singer to literal rock royalty. It’s not something he expected, but he embraced it. The youngest son of a large ScotsBritish family, Stewart’s desire to be the center of attention contrasted with the stage fright that followed him from his beginnings emulating Sam Cooke to fronting the Jeff Beck Group. A glowing New York Times review of a concert at the Fillmore Auditorium during that band’s first tour validated Stewart’s conviction that he had the potential to be famous. He left Beck to join boyhood friend Ron Wood in the Faces, whose drunken camaraderie and good-time rock ’n’ roll helped him get over his shyness. The new gig freed him up to focus on his solo career and a series of hits such as “Maggie May” and “You Wear it Well,” both of which were part of his set during his last shows. By the end of 1975, Stewart left the Faces, and rode a rocket to superstardom on the strength of No. 1 smashes such as “Tonight’s the Night” and a cover of Cat Stevens’ “The First Cut is the Deepest.” In 1978, he had his biggest seller to date with disco-flavored “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy,” which drew criticism from music journalists who wanted more “Mandolin Wind,” but is enough of a fan favorite to have been the encore for the entire run of Rod Stewart: The Hits. After delving into pop standards in the 2000s, Stewart focused on songwriting again for his 2013 studio album, Time, which broke the Top 10 in the U.S. and went to No. 1 in the U.K. He followed that success with 2015’s Another Country. With no end in sight to his enthusiasm for performing, Sir Rod Stewart looks to be delivering The Hits indefinitely—or at least as long as his hair still stands on end. Let It Glide

All Together Now Ready for an amazing opportunity? Catch comedy legends Steve Martin and Martin Short, on the same stage, at the same time, in An Evening You Will Forget for The Rest of Your Life. The “Wild and Crazy” Martin was selling out stadiums on the regular towards the end of the ’70s. He became so famous he couldn’t do his jokes without the audience yelling out parts of it as if they were songs and he was a rock star. Short has been a sensation ever since he first appeared on the cult Canadian classic

television show SCTV in the early ’80s. His character work was parlayed into some of the most memorable sketches in the history of Saturday Night Live, including dweeby Ed Grimley, don’t-call-him-defensive lawyer Nathan Thurm and lounge entertainer Jackie Rogers Jr. Between them, these ¡Three Amigos! and Father of the Bride costars have many hilarious stories to tell. Watch them recount some during their ultra-successful show, which you’ll undoubtedly remember for a very long time. –Jason Harris

He typically adds a new character every year, but this year he unveiled two new puppets that actually perform together: Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney. “I’ve been wanting to add more real-life celebrities to the show as my audiences are coming from all over the world,” Fator said. “Music truly is that universal language.” –Brock Radke

Ranae Winemiller

Foodie wants to share the goodness Seven years ago, Ranae Winemiller had never had a tamale. That might sound inconsequential. A tamale is just one dish, or rather one category of dishes, but Winemiller is a recipe developer, freelance marketer and certified food lover, the kind of person who geeks out in the grocery store and immortalizes restaurant meals on Instagram under the handle @hungryinvegas. Winemiller grew up in West Virginia and moved to Las Vegas in 2011, which changed the way she cooks and eats. “In West Virginia, the cuisine was not extremely diverse. Coming here and having food from all over the world, it’s really expanded how I cook at home. I’d never had a tamale till I moved to Vegas, and now I make them.” And she doesn’t just make tamales, she wins competitions with them. A few years ago, Winemiller won a Del Real Foods recipe contest for her creative takes on the Mexican classic: sweet corn tamale waffles with chicken and cheese tamale-stuffed jalapeños wrapped in bacon. “Doing food Instagram and being able to cook and create recipes, I’m doing everything I ever wanted to do and didn’t know it,” says the 35-year-old, who went to journalism school and entered the culinary world through blogging. She created @hungryinvegas to focus on food photography, honing her talents with shots of ube pancakes and squid ink pasta that have attracted nearly 10,000 followers. “I love when someone sends me a message and says, ‘We were from out of town and took a Lyft to somewhere off-Strip’,” Winemiller says. “To be a part of people’s culinary happiness, that’s pretty fun.” Exposing followers to restaurants beyond the tourist corridor is one of her goals on Instagram, as well as sharing appreciation for plates that her cook’s eye recognizes as labor-intensive. “I grew up in one of those families where everyone was trying to feed you,” she says. “I want to kind of feed people through Instagram. I want to make people hungry.” –Sarah Feldberg

Downtown hotels offer plenty of pool fun Resorts along the Las Vegas Strip have become exceedingly good at re-creating paradise. Yes, smack-dab in the middle of a desert, guests can spend the day lounging by cool waters and tropical Edens. A day spent at the pool has become a mini-vacation inside your vacation. And while the mega resorts offer acres upon acres of pool paradise, downtown hotels have upped their pool game and are worth adding to your itinerary. First off, nowhere in Las Vegas can you plunge into a pool and spot sharks and schools of fish swimming next to you except at the Golden Nugget. The Tank pool complex features a 200,000-gallon shark tank aquarium and a waterslide through said tank. Guests can book a private cabana, cool off on a submerged lounge chair or visit the 21-and-over private pool hang,

The Hideout, which is equipped with its own cabanas, infinity edge pool and bar. There’s also the H2O bar, oversized Jacuzzis and outdoor gaming tables. More games await at Downtown Grand’s Citrus Grand Pool Deck, including foosball, cornhole and table tennis. The rectangular pool has a backyard-type feel, complete with cabanas, fire pits, grassy seating areas with umbrellas and daybeds. It’s become a welcoming, cool spot to hang for the day. On Fridays, stop by Citrus in the evening for the weekly Old School by The Pool event, beginning at 8 p.m. and free to those 21 and over. Hang in the pool or dance on the deck as R&B and funk bands play all the old-school hits you can handle; there’s also food and drink specials,

and DJs keep the groovy sounds going in between band performances. If you want to celebrate the Fourth of July early, head to The Pool at The Plaza. Guests are invited to a free Independence Day pool party June 30 at 7 p.m. The Pool has a cool, vintage Palms Springs vibe, with cabanas surrounding the sparkling waters and lounge chairs submerged in the shallow ends. The 70,000-square-foot deck will have plenty of room for guests to relax throughout the evening while enjoying drink specials, live DJ sets and made-to-order poolside fare from the pool’s permanent food truck. The Palms has unveiled the first phase of its massive renovation, and the results are nothing less than stunning. If there’s a theme for these changes, it must be to build upon the off-Strip resort’s reputation for being hip and edgy with creative blasts of fresh, artful style, and nowhere is that approach more evident than the new Scotch 80 Prime steakhouse. The restaurant space that formerly housed the iconic N9NE Steakhouse has evolved into a bigger, brighter, more Fire & Ice banana split vibrant dining destination, expanded with a larger dining room, a gleaming golden bar and lounge replete with the city’s perhaps most grand selection of Scotch whisky, and Colorado lamb chops regal décor that includes original artwork by Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Damien Hirst. Everything’s different under the sea; it’s a different world.” It’s a world that Adams has been exploring for years, whether swimming with sharks, wake surfing or scuba diving. She’s swam with sharks in Thailand, the Bahamas and Mexico, and she’s already booked her next

That ’90s Appeal Some artists whose popularity peaked in past decades resist embracing nostalgia, but Art Alexakis of ’90s alt-rock band Everclear has not only embraced it, but has also turned it into a successful brand. In 2012, he founded the annual Summerland Tour, which highlights fellow alt-rock bands from the ’90s on the lucrative summer tour circuit. This year,

Everclear will be joined for the second time by Marcy Playground, along with debuting Summerland act Local H. As the tour’s headliners, Everclear has a slew of familiar hits to play, including ’90s radio favorites “Santa Monica,” “Wonderful” and “I Will Buy You a New Life.” Marcy Playground and Local H have one major

chart-topping hit each (“Sex and Candy” and “Bound for the Floor,” respectively), but both bands have remained active, releasing new material and touring regularly. Sounds of Summer With summer once again heating up Las Vegas, it’s time for outdoor concerts at the Mandalay Bay Beach, and reggae is always ideal. Frequent Vegas visitors Dirty Heads are bringing along fellow California reggae band Iration for an evening of chill tunes and good vibes. Since forming in 2006, the band has collaborated with musicians ranging from Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash to rapper B-Real of Cypress Hill, and 2017 album Swim Team features a guest appearance from Nick Hexum of reggae-rockers 311. Iration started just a little earlier and a little further north up the California coast, and released its self-titled sixth album in May, debuting at No. 2 on the Billboard reggae album charts. Building the Beats

The members of Mexican pop trio Reik grew up in Mexicali, near Mexico’s border with California, so they’ve always been influenced by English-language music. At the same time, Spanish-language music has become more popular than ever, with mainstream hits like Luis Fonsi’s “Despacito” and numerous acts from Latin America touring successfully in the U.S. and around the world. So that gives Reik the opportunity to grow its fan base, something that’s already happening thanks to recent singles “Ya Me Enteré,” featuring urban pop star Nicky Jam, and “Me Niego,” featuring rapper Wisin and reggaeton singer Ozuna. Both songs hit the top 10 on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart. While Tape Face’s intent is creating visual jokes with wait-forit reveals, his creator Sam Wills is intentionally bringing fringe festival entertainment to the Strip—and making it work—through a character equal parts Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton. Wile E. Coyote and Tim Burton’s Edward Scissorhands. “The actual name ‘The Boy with Tape on his Face’ was a tribute to Tim Burton, who was just a massive influence on the character,” says Wills of Tape Face’s original appellation. “Tim Burton wrote a poem called ‘The Boy with Nails in His Eyes,’ and I quite liked that literal name.” The initial character didn’t have tape on his face at all. Two engagements at the Flamingo followed before he was invited to sign a three-year lease at his House of Tape venue at Harrah’s. It’s one thing to play to fringe festival audiences that expect the unexpected. Performing a participatory act for Vegas visitors with diverse entertainment options is riskier, but if a packed house at an early June show is any indication, Tape Face has no shortage of volunteers to join him onstage. Anything goes from there, in a PG-13 way. Still, Tape Face makes sure no one suffers bodily harm or terrible embarrassment, and the entire audience participates in the act at the end. Wills wrote the show with the assistance of his nephew, 9 at the time, which is one reason it’s infused with childlike ingenuity. “I think he’s about 17 now, so he’s useless to me,” says Wills with a laugh. He and his alter ego are big fans of visual puns too. “There’s a few Easter eggs hiding in these shows, don’t you worry.”
