SAFETY FIRST FOR MONSOON SEASON If you’ve had enough of the humidity and rain, you might want to stay indoors a bit longer. Las Vegas is a desert, but monsoon season brings weather patterns not typically associated with dry climates. The thunderstorms, mugginess and wind are all part of the season’s effects, but the showers themselves don’t qualify as a monsoon, according to National Weather Service Las Vegas forecaster Alex Boothe. A monsoon is a description of the shift in wind patterns, which pull moisture from wetter climates toward drier ones. The average Las Vegas season runs the first week of July through September. Flooding is the No. 1 concern, but hail, wind and lightning can also cause serious damage. “This is not a place you want to be when there’s flash flooding happening,” Boothe said. Check weather reports daily, avoid hiking if it looks like it might rain and “don’t attempt to drive through flooded waters. You’re just adding fuel to the fire if you’re willing to drive through a flooded road at night,” he said. While you might be tempted to snap photos of a lightning storm, Boothe said, “That’s literally the opposite of what you need to be doing.” Best to stay safe and leave the photos to the professionals. –Leslie Ventura

PARKLAND, LAS VEGAS SURVIVORS BOND Manuel Oliver created a mural in honor of his son, Joaquin “Guac” Oliver, at Sunset Park during the March for our Lives, Road to Change tour. Joaquin was killed during the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. A group of survivors from Florida visited survivors of the Oct. 1 mass shooting on July 16 as part of a national tour to spread a message promoting gun control. “We all found common ground in our suffering,” said David Hogg, a Parkland survivor. “None of us ever wants to live through this again.” (Photos by Wade Vandervort/Staff)

HELP THE NSPCA BEAT THE HEAT There’s a boutique in town with a different kind of business model—giving back to the community. Eden in Love, located at Town Square, partnered with the Nevada Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to raise money for a “Christmas in July” fundraiser. The store will accept donations on behalf of the NSPCA and then match the donation with up to $30 off an entire purchase. Proceeds go toward cat and dog grooming, bottles, nursing kits, formula and emergency rescue situations. Kathy Jung, NSPCA president, said the nonprofit also needs wading pools for the animals. “We have dogs, pot-bellied pigs and goats, and they absolutely love them. Right now, a lot of places are sold out, and because of the heat, they always crack. We can always use little kid swimming pools.” The organization also needs additional volunteers during the summer to accommodate its early hours (5-10 am.). Volunteers can fill out an application at nevadaspca.org. –Leslie Ventura
MICHELLE RODRIGUEZ DRIVES FUNDS TO PUERTO RICO Fast and Furious star Michelle Rodriguez and Omaze are teaming up to support Taino Warriors, a nonprofit organization devoted to providing Puerto Rico with the resources it needs to restore its environment, agriculture, and mental health and educational facilities in the wake of Hurricane Maria. Your $10-$5,000 donation gives you multiple chances to spend a day in Las Vegas with Rodriguez, driving fast cars and partying furiously. omaze.com/ experiences/michelle-rodriguez-race-track-vegas

STORIES FROM LAST WEEK ALLEGED RUSSIAN SPY ARRESTED Federal prosecutors on July 16 charged a 29-year-old gun-rights activist with serving as a covert Russian agent while living in Washington, gathering intelligence on American officials and political organizations, and working to establish back-channel lines of communications for the Kremlin. The announcement of the arrest of Maria Butina came hours after President Donald Trump met with Russian President Vladimir Putin. HOMETOWN HERO, HOME RUN CHAMP Bryce Harper, who left Las Vegas High School early to enroll at the College of Southern Nevada and then became the first pick in the 2010 Major League Baseball Draft, belted 19 home runs July 16 in the finals of the All-Star Home Run Derby, edging Chicago Cub Kyle Schwarber to win the contest. Harper, a six-time all-star and former National League MVP, arranged for his father, Ron, to pitch to him in the event.
TRUMP TWEETS
While I had a great meeting with NATO, raising vast amounts of money, I had an even better meeting with Vladimir Putin of Russia. Sadly, it is not being reported that way - the Fake News is going Crazy! (July 17)
VIVA LA FRANCE For the second time in history, France won the World Cup with a 4-2 victory against Croatia on July 15. About two-thirds of France’s roster included players with immigrant backgrounds, a mini-United Nations of soccer talent.

BEST AMOUNT OF WEIRD Opium A motif that’s pure ’70s sci-fi kitsch. A motley-crew cast that includes a wannabe Freddie Mercury juggler. And a banana routine as disconcerting as it is disgusting. The Cosmopolitan regains its eccentricity with Spiegelworld’s space oddity. Cosmopolitan, 702-698-7000.

BEST RESIDEN T WE WANT TO STAY Jennifer Lopez JLo’s got too much going on to stay in any one place for long, but her big Vegas production show at Zappos Theater really won us over. Catch her closing run in September if you want to see the only residency where the dancers have to work to keep up with the star. Planet Hollywood, 702-777-2782. BEST NEW ENTERTAINM E N T SPREAD Westgate Las Vegas Barry Manilow, George Wallace, Clint Holmes and Earl Turner and the Magic of Jen Kramer. BEST MUSI CAL TRA NSFOR MATI ON Ted Rader When he returned from the Pacific Northwest, the former Mad Cap was almost unrecognizable in appearance and sound. His current projects—the dark psychedelia of Ted Rader and the Magic Family and the Eno-y futurism of Inhumanagain—are bold and imaginative, the sign of an artist who has come into his own. tedrader.bandcamp. com; inhumanagain.bandcamp.com BEST FAST-R ISING RAPPER Mike Xavier Before winding up in Vegas, Xavier spent time homeless on the streets of LA. QUICKSAND BROOKLYN BOWL The NYC post-hardcore quartet returned to the stage in 2012 after a 13-year hiatus, but truly completed its comeback last November, releasing Interiors, its first album of new material since 1995. It finds the original foursome re-embracing a noisy, urgent and interesting rock sound that feels quintessentially Quicksand. With Spotlights. 8 p.m., $25. –Spencer Patterson
Based in Las Vegas, the national Broadway in the Hood theater program has both a grand goal (to positively impact youth in low-income violenceplagued communities) and a solid record of producing hits (recent shows include A Raisin in the Sun, Disney’s The Jungle Book and Ain’t Misbehavin’). Even more impressive, Broadway in the Hood recruits and trains locals, not fancy performers from out of town. It also offers low-priced shows so that art is accessible to all--whether you’re a star-in-waiting, a future stage manager or a future audience member. Case in point: The upcoming Bring in the Light features a cast of more than 50 youth. Written and performed by those youngsters, it’s the product of Broadway in the Hood’s recent educational summer camp. Through song, dance and heartfelt monologues, the musical explores the plight and resiliency of the next generation in today’s world of “bombs, bullying, mass shootings, mind games, government turmoil and social media shenanigans.” The topics are heavy, but viewers—and performers—should leave inspired. 3 p.m., $10. –C. “J

There’s nothing on the line (except good taste), but it’s nice to know the person spearheading Wynn’s annual Shark Swim knows the score. On this day, Lockwood is putting the finishing touches on what has been a months-long planning process for the July 25-29 festivities, which will see Encore Beach Club, XS and Intrigue transform into a nautical paradise with three distinct themes and a DJ lineup that’ll have you begging to get back in the water.
Docked at Intrigue The opening night of Shark Swim serves as the
bait, or chum, so to speak. Though you’ll be walking through a giant whale’s mouth at the entrance, the club will be decked out like a pier party for those who prefer to stay dry. “We’ve turned the hallway into an aquarium,” Lockwood says. “Inside it will feel like the Santa Monica pier, and the Library is an underwater seaport lounge modeled after Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.” RL Grime headlines the July 25 kickoff, which will feature staff in “stylistic sailor” outfits.
Underwater at XS Nightclub While the pools will be filled with inflatable sharks—“Everything from mako to great white to hammerhead,” Lockwood says—you’ll see mermaid costumes throughout XS. Joining you for an underwater weekend will be three of Wynn Nightlife’s heaviest hitters: The
Chainsmokers on July 27, Diplo on July 28 and Marshmello for Sunday’s Nightswim on July 29.
Shipwrecked at Encore Beach Club Encore Beach Club will see the most action during Shark Swim, with a Thursday-to-Sunday lineup that includes daytime performances from Dillon Francis, The Chainsmokers and Diplo, along with Nightswim shows headlined by Flosstradamus, Slander and, of course, Bite This label founder Jauz. The venue is embracing a shipwrecked theme, so bring your Gilligan hat, but leave your Wilson volleyball at home as there will be plenty of props inside. Encore Beach Club will also debut a new, exclusive SharkSwim bottle package. The $25,000 Big Kahuna comes with two bottles of Grey Goose, a bottle of Patron Platinum, 15 bottles of Dom Pérignon and 24 Red Bulls. For all that, you’re going to need a bigger boat.

Dan Bejar will play Destroyer tunes solo acoustic at the Bunkhouse. (Fabiola Carranza/Courtesy)
The solo shift Destroyer’s Dan Bejar talks about the freedom—and terror—of hitting the stage alone By Leslie Ventura or more than 20 years, Dan Bejar has charmed fans as the enigmatic, linenwearing frontman of Canadian outfit Destroyer. Known for his esoteric wit and clever lyricism, Bejar’s mysterious persona is almost as inherent to Destroyer as the music itself, which dabbles in everything from lo-fi indie and glistening New Wave to yacht rock and Latin ballads. Bejar called up the Weekly from his Vancouver home to talk about the anxiety of performing solo, his previous experiences in Vegas and more. You performed here as a part of The New Pornographers back in 2010. Have you ever played Las Vegas with Destroyer? The band Destroyer played once 10 years ago [at]Beauty Bar ... It was toward the tail end of a long tour, so it’s quite blurry and it all happened really fast. I just remember us going on incredibly late, like maybe three hours later than we’d gone on anywhere else in North America.

BEST INSTANT STAR William Karlsson, Vegas Golden Knights Having scored just 16 goals in two-plus seasons in Columbus, “Wild Bill” exploded into Vegas consciousness, leading the Golden Knights in points (78), goals (43, third in the NHL) and plus/minus (+49, first in the NHL) during the regular season, helping the team to the Stanley Cup Final and earning the league’s Lady Byng Memorial Trophy for play and sportsmanship.
BEST RECORDSMASHING TRIUMVIRATE Bill Foley, George McPhee & Gerard Gallant, Vegas Golden Knights Hats off to the men who brought hockey to the desert (VGK owner Foley), pieced together a winning franchise (GM McPhee) and coached it to the most successful expansion mark in sports history (Coach Gallant).

BEST DEFENSIVE STOPPER (ON ICE) Nate Schmidt, Vegas Golden Knights Left unprotected by the Washington Capitals, this Minnesotan quickly emerged as the Golden Knights’ leading blueliner, locking down the opposition’s top scorer and playing a major role in his new team earning a Stanley Cup Final showdown against his old one.

BEST VEGAS ATHLETE Marc-André Fleury, Vegas Golden Knights The Golden Knights passed the hero hat around a lot during their magical first season, but No. 29 wore one almost every time he stepped between the pipes. We can’t wait to see what he does for an encore.

BEST COURT LEAD ER Brooke Johnson, UNLV women’s basketball The Lady Rebels won their first-ever Mountain West Conference title this season largely on the back of Johnson, a four-year starting guard who was both an explosive scorer and shutdown defender.
BEST OUTD OOR STAR Alex Honnold He’s most famous for daring ropeless climbs (known as “free solos”) and for record-breaking feats (a sub two-hour climb of El Capitan at Yosemite). Honnold lives in Las Vegas, so you might see him on the trails, but don’t be scared: The international sensation is a super-nice guy.
BEST FUTUR E STAR, HIGH SCHOOL D IVISION Julian Strawther, Liberty High boys basketball If future mock drafts are to be believed, the 6-foot-6 swingman is on track to become the fourth local NBA lottery pick in eight years when he’s eligible in 2021. A consensus 5-star recruit, the lanky and versatile Strawther can also choose virtually any college he’d like to attend.

In addition to ever-popular Dollar Beer Night Thursdays and Firework Fridays, the team is giving away free gear on several dates this season.

hat does your organization do? Spread the Word Nevada is dedicated to advancing childhood literacy within low-income communities by changing lives one book at a time. We do this through four main initiatives: ■ Kids to Kids: distribution of grade-level appropriate books to build at-home libraries ■ Breakfast With Books: family literacy program that models and encourages families to read with their children ■ Books & Buddies: community mentoring programs for struggling readers ■ Books on Break: summer reading program. When and why was it established? In 2001, co-founder Laurie Hartig, a former Clark County School District librarian, wanted to advance early childhood literacy by placing books into the homes of children within Southern Nevada’s at-risk low-income communities. She recognized that most of her students did not have books and believed they should be equipped with tools that empower them. Three months later, I joined Laurie, and Spread the Word Nevada has since grown into the largest children’s literacy nonprofit organization in the state. The program has had a profound effect on the lives of more than 513,000 at-risk children by providing more than 4.6 million books. We place more than 54,000 books in homes each month. We also serve 54 Southern Nevada elementary schools. What services might the community not know about? Books on Break is our reading program to encourage reading throughout the summer months to avoid the “summer slide.” It
What can people do to get involved in the cause you serve? We are always in need of volunteers. We are recruiting mentors for our Books and Buddies program, which provides reading companions for at-risk students attending local elementary schools. People can also donate new or gently used books or $1, which provides one book to an at-risk child. What can Southern Nevadans do to improve our community in general? Volunteer. Get out, get to know your community and be a helper. Find a cause that you are passionate about and get involved.

ell us your background. I have been serving in nonprofit leadership roles for more than a decade. Prior to this, I served for 15 years in various leadership roles within the technology sector. I am former military—I graduated from West Point and served in the U.S. Army Field Artillery during the Gulf War era. What are the programs and services of the Golden Knights Foundation and Folded Flag Foundation? The Golden Knights Foundation focuses its support on these five priorities: ■ Fostering the physical, social and emotional growth of Las Vegas youth, with an emphasis on sports ■ Making sustainable, scalable, positive impacts on health and wellness through research, education and prevention ■ Enhancing teaching and learning through K-12 public school programs and initiatives designed to develop leadership and promote community service ■ Securing the future of Las Vegas military, first responders and their families, especially those who have suffered a sacrifice for the greater good ■ Fighting hunger and homelessness in the Las Vegas community by addressing their root causes. The Folded Flag Foundation’s mission is to provide educational scholarships and support grants to the spouses and children of the United States military and government personnel who died as a result of hostile action or in an accident related to U.S. combat operations. Scholarships and grants are available to qualifying spouses of fallen heroes and their children under the
age of 26 to help provide a pathway to success by covering a wide range of living expense and educational needs, from kindergarten to college/trade school. Do the missions of the two organizations overlap or have they ever joined forces for a specific reason? The two organizations are operated completely independently of one another, though they come together at times in support of surviving military families in Southern Nevada. What local charities or organizations do your foundations contribute to? We are open to requests from any legitimately es-
What are the goals for the foundations in the next few years? To continue to grow our program efforts. For Folded Flag, this means stronger outreach to the thousands of surviving military families across the nation. For VGKF, this means increasing internal efficiencies to allow for better (and broader) support for charities as possible across our five pillars—Education, Health & Wellness, Youth Development & Sports, Military & First Responder and Hunger & Homelessness. It’s an exciting time for the Vegas Golden Knights. Do you have a game day ritual? No specific ritual, though I do make a point not to listen to any pre-game analysis or commentary. I prefer to go into each game with my unbiased opinion about how the game will turn out. What is your dream job outside of your current field? Educator. I have two sisters who are teachers, and I admire what they do every day in shaping children’s lives. I had a taste of education in the early 2000s and have always dreamed of one day becoming a high school teacher or college professor.
John Coogan is president of the Golden Knights Foundation and the Folded Flag Foundation. (Wade Vandervort/Staff)
