POP-UP PHENOMENON HAPPY PLACE COMING TO MANDALAY BAY People come to Las Vegas from all over the world to see and do things they can’t experience anywhere else. Soon they’ll be able to step inside a chocolate chip cookie, spend time with a life-size unicorn named Cornelius and hop into a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. Those are just a few of the immersive, multisensory activities that comprise Happy Place, a pop-up exhibit coming to Mandalay Bay on August 23. The installation will be produced by Faculty Productions and Live Nation Las Vegas and was conceptualized by Jared Paul, a talent manager who works with New Kids on the Block, Il Divo and other acts. Happy Place features 15,000 square feet of space, and Urban Daddy called it “the most Instagrammable pop-up in America.” Among its rooms are the Super Bloom, filled with 40,000 handmade gold flowers; an Upside Down room that defies gravity; the world’s largest indoor confetti dome; and the signature Rubber Ducky Bathtub of Fun. The installation has toured LA, Chicago, Toronto and Boston, and will include new features unique to Las Vegas. It will be open daily from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. and is scheduled to stay at Mandalay Bay through January. General admission tickets will start at $30 and go on sale August 3 at happyplace.me/tickets. —Brock Radke

NO POLITICAL TALK ON ESPN: On July 19, ESPN reminded employees of the network’s policy to avoid talking about politics after radio talk show host Dan Le Batard criticized President Donald Trump and his recent racist comments and ESPN itself on the air. “We here at ESPN don’t have the stomach for the fight,” Le Batard said. “We don’t talk about what is happening unless there is some sort of weak, cowardly sports angle that we can run it through.” IRAN’S SPY ARRESTS: Iran on July 22 announced the arrest of 17 Iranians it accused of spying on the country’s nuclear and military sites for the CIA, and said some of them have been sentenced to death. President Donald Trump said there was “zero truth” to the claims. The arrests happened over the past months, an Iranian intelligence official said at a news conference in Tehran. He said those taken into custody worked on “sensitive sites” in military and nuclear installations. The official did not say how many were given death sentences.

RONALDO WILL NOT BE PROSECUTED: The Clark County District Attorney’s Office announced July 22 that it would not prosecute a 10-year-old sexual assault allegation against soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo. The allegation could not be proven beyond a reasonable doubt, prosecutors said. The accuser and Ronaldo, through their attorneys, reached a civil settlement related to the matter in 2010. TRASH BILL SURCHARGE TO CLEAN UP STREETS: Las Vegas residents will see their trash bills increase by about 78 cents per month starting this fall as part of a new effort to clean city streets and enhance public safety. The City Council approved a resolution on July 17 to establish a fund to address sanitation concerns and remove trash and debris in Las Vegas through a surcharge of no more than 5% imposed on residential trash bills. The surcharge will go into effect in October.

CONSTRUCTION RAMPS UP ON MSG SPHERE PROJECT

About 400 workers are laboring daily at the MSG Sphere construction site near the Venetian, and that number will continue to rise. That’s according to Nick Tomasino, who is heading the effort to build the 17,500-seat, dome-shaped entertainment venue on Sands Avenue between Manhattan Street and Koval Lane. MSG officials broke ground on the project last fall, with plans to open the venue in 2021. The Sphere will feature an immersive, 160,000-square-foot display surface, which is the equivalent of about three football fields, and accommodate about 20,000 people when standing-room space is taken into account. The company plans to house a number of events at the Sphere, including concerts, residencies, award shows, corporate events and sporting events. —Bryan Horwath

GOLDEN KNIGHTS SIGN ENGELLAND, SCRAP CLARKSON’S CONTRACT The Golden Knights locked up their unofficial captain and shed one of their more cumbersome contracts in a pair of moves on July 23. Vegas announced the signing of defenseman Deryk Engelland to a one-year contract and the trade of David Clarkson’s remaining contract ($5.25 million for the coming season) and a 2020 fourth-round pick to the Toronto Maple Leafs in exchange for goalie Garret Sparks. Engelland’s contract guarantees him a base salary of the league-minimum $700,000 with performance bonuses that can reach $1.5 million. Engelland had 12 points in 74 games last year and played large penalty-kill minutes for Vegas. Sparks figures to play with the Chicago Wolves in the AHL and could be one of the first looks if Marc-André Fleury or Malcolm Subban gets injured. The 26-year-old played 20 games for Toronto last year with a .902 save percentage and a 3.15 goals-against average. —Justin Emerson

$100 SANDWICH Now open on the Strip at the Fashion Show Mall, Ike’s Love & Sandwiches features a high roller menu complete with a $100 sandwich named for Howard Hughes. The Howard Hughes sandwich features American wagyu roast beef fresh from Idaho-based Snake River Farms, brisket and prime rib and is topped with a truffle sauce. Of course, customers can also get cheaper sandwiches, with menu prices starting at about $9.

WATER CONSERVATION

WATER 101: TODAY’S SYSTEMS PROTECT LAS VEGAS’ FUTURE

Water conservation is a multifaceted effort that requires the support of the entire community. Because the Valley has adopted comprehensive conservation practices, Colorado River water usage has decreased, even as Clark County’s population has grown, Mack says. Since 2002, the population of Southern Nevada has increased 46% but water use per capita has decreased 38%.

+

Understanding water issues and infrastructure is necessary for all desert dwellers. It’s our responsibility to ensure there will be enough water for future generations, particularly when water resources are threatened and under significant strain. “When I moved to Las Vegas almost 30 years ago, water investment and conservation tactics allowed me to land here,” says Bronson Mack of Southern Nevada Water Authority. “This community was able to provide for me because of the efforts of the people who came before me. They set the stage for myself and millions of others to call Southern Nevada their home, and we need to continue to pay that forward.” Part of that responsibility is understanding how our water system works. Here are the basics.

WORLD-CLASS WATER SYSTEMS

WHERE DOES OUR WATER COME FROM? Ninety percent of Southern Nevada’s water comes from Lake Mead, which is fed by the Colorado River. We share this water with Arizona, California, New Mexico, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado and Mexico.

4 … before making its way to Southern Nevada homes and businesses.

3 2 Water is pumped from the intakes and sent to a treatment plant, where it’s treated to safe drinking water standards.

It’s then distributed via pumping station to more than 100 reservoirs and tanks throughout the Valley …

In Southern Nevada, 99 percent of all water used indoors is recycled. “Nevada has some of the most advanced wastewater systems in the country,” Mack says. “You take a longer shower without guilt, knowing that water will be recycled and used again down the line.” Water used indoors is treated and sent back to Lake Mead for future use. On the other hand, water used outdoors cannot be recycled and drains our resources, which is why outdoor watering restrictions are crucial.

Lake Mead has three intakes capable of drawing water from different depths for use in Southern Nevada. The most newly constructed, Intake 3, began operation in 2015 amid concerns of declining lake levels. It has the deepest reach of the three access points.

OUTDOOR WATER-SAVING TIPS Unlike water used indoors that is reclaimed and safely recycled back to Lake Mead, water used outdoors cannot be recycled or reused. 1. FOLLOW WATERING RESTRICTIONS Adhering to seasonal water schedules is a big water saver. In spring and fall, outdoor watering is limited to three days per week and only one day in winter. In the summer—May through August— watering outdoors is permitted Monday through Saturday, before 11 a.m. and after 7 p.m. The Sunday watering restriction, implemented in 2016, saves more than 900 million gallons of water each year, Mack says. 2. REMOVE NONFUNCTIONAL TURF “Nonfunctional turf” is grass that is not used for any reason other than aesthetics. This includes medians, traffic roundabouts and entrances of HOA communities. “We want grass where it makes sense—in parks, schools, ball fields and other places that the community can use and enjoy it,” Mack says. SNWA’s turf conversion program, wherein nonfunctional turf has been replaced with of the water-smart landscaping, has saved 130 Valley’s water billion gallons of water since 1999. comes from Lake Mead

90%

10%

L A K E P O W E L L

DROUGHT IN THE COLORADO RIVER The Colorado River has been experiencing severe drought conditions since 2000, causing Lake Mead’s water levels to decline about 130 feet. “A drought is a slow-moving natural disaster,” Mack says. “You usually don’t realize you’re in a drought until you’re already waist-deep.” Lake Mead’s water level is at 1,085 feet. Should water levels continue to decline, the Bureau of Reclamation projects that the lake may face shortage conditions in the coming years, reducing the amount of water available to Nevada, Arizona, California and Mexico. Because of conservation efforts, Southern Nevada is prepared to meet the community’s water needs even if shortage conditions are declared.

Intake 3: 875 feet

Though Southern Nevada’s water supplies are secure, there is a lot being done by the Las Vegas Valley Water District and the Southern Nevada Water Authority to keep it that way. “For all efforts considered, Lake Mead is about 15 feet higher today than it would be without water-saving interventions of our community and other users of the Colorado River,” Mack says. He also said that we will not have a water shortage condition in 2020, in part as a result of a great snowpack this year and the conservation efforts of all regions that rely on the Colorado River.

EVERY DROP SAVED MAKES A RIPPLE IN OUR COMMUNITY. Thank you, Southern Nevada, for all that you’ve done to conserve water. Together we’ve saved over half a trillion gallons – but we’re not done yet. It’s essential to keep conserving for our future, one drop at a time. Visit SNWA.com for more ways to save. Southern Nevada Water Authority is a not-for-profit water agency

Jul 27-AUG 10 Drag Queen Cuisine House of Blues Longtime Las Vegas performers Toni James and Derrick Barry star in this new, original show in the House of Blues’ B Side space— July 27 and August 3 and 10—with the aim of bringing an evening drag production back to the Strip on a consistent basis. “Drag has come so far in the past 15 years since I moved here, when La Cage was all there was,” says Barry, best known for performing as Britney Spears and appearing on America’s Got Talent and RuPaul’s Drag Race. “It’s become so mainstream. To be back on the Strip on a Saturday night at the House of Blues, it feels like everything is coming together so perfectly.” Drag brunches have been popping up lately, but this is a drag dinner show with a cast of six performers including beloved burlesque act Kalani Kokonuts. “She’s incredible. It’s amazing to see someone do burlesque at that level, and it’s a totally different feel from drag,” Barry says. “She’s got her own niche, and she’s really great at it.” 7:30 p.m., $35-$65. –Brock Radke

lights being projected onto him. Surrounding the platform, a number of tables and tufted Victorianstyle chairs are available for guests, along with VIP seating around the perimeter. The club marks a massive change from Share, which opened in 2011 and shuttered in 2016. Before Share, the club was known as Minxx Gentleman’s Club & Lounge. Because the venue operates under an adult cabaret license, Share was able to offer lap dances in the upstairs area. Though Iconic operates under the same license, Simmons said Iconic will not offer lap dances. “Legally, I can do it if I want. It’s a very valuable license, and once you lose it you don’t get it back,” he said. “But a nightclub is about meeting people and having fun and making memories, so we’re trying to keep away from that.” Iconic will be open Friday through Monday, with the upstairs, Avant, opening at 9 a.m., and the downstairs opening at 11 p.m. VIP table reservations start at a minimum of $100 per person.

Picture This Former photographer Bryan Haraway celebrates his solo debut

+

The new self-titled album by Boulder City singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Bryan Haraway is an allAmerican gem. These nine country-folk tunes have the friendliness of a downhome backyard barbecue. “It’s genuine, and it’s from the heart,” says Haraway, formerly of the Las Vegas band Part Time Criminals. “I try to walk this line of making the music accessible but not generic.” With the help of Grammy-winning producer Chad Brown, Haraway recorded in Nashville with a full array of musicians, including backup singers, horns, organs, piano and guitars. The result is a lush, layered album that’s honest and authentic. Las Vegans can hear the songs at Haraway’s July 30 album release party at the Sand Dollar. Haraway has recruited drummer Rob Whited to help put together a live band for the event. After spending 20 years as a photographer, Haraway retired to focus on music—and run a laundromat/musical hangout called Sudz. He says that his time as a visual artist has deepened his songwriting, and now he’s working on more songs. So this album is just the beginning. “I’m just going to do what I want to do from now on, which is make music and spread a little joy and love in this world.” The album drops July 26, but to hear it, you’ll need to attend the release party to pick up a physical copy. For now, Haraway is only releasing the song “We Get High” on iTunes and his website bryanharaway.com. –C. Moon Reed

BEST MOVE TO THE BURBS

BEST LOG O

Summer dreams come true at Downtown Summerlin. The new ballpark is almost too good to be true—cool and comfortable with great food and a fun flow. No wonder the Aviators are winning. 1650 S. Pavilion Center Drive, 702-943-7200.

The Aces’ logo is sleek, bold, instantly identified with Las Vegas and almost as exciting as the team itself. The designs look great on the home court at Mandalay Bay Events Center, too. aces.wnba.com.

BEST V EG AS ATHLE T E

Marc-André Fleury, Vegas Golden Knights

As Fleury goes, so go the Knights—on the ice and in the hearts of our voters, who showered “Flower” with appropriate affection in our poll for the second straight year.

BEST COLLEG E ATHLETE, MALE

Bryson Stott, UNLV Baseball

Stott came into his junior season carrying heavy expectations, and the shortstop managed to exceed them by batting .356 with 10 home runs and becoming the 14th pick in the 2019 MLB draft by the Philadelphia Phillies.

BEST COLLEG E ATHLETE, FE MALE

Avi’Tal Wilson-Perteete, UNLV Track

The rising junior is a three-time Mountain West champion and three-time All-American honoree who holds the school indoor record for the 800 at 2 minutes, 4.71 seconds. She placed third in the 800 at the NCAA Division I outdoor track and field championship in June.

BEST PREP ATHLETE, MALE

Jaden Hardy, Coronado Basketball

ESPN ranks the 6-foot-4 guard as the nation’s fourthbest recruit in the class of 2021 for good reason: He has made the all-state first team for two straight seasons and averaged 25.3 points, 8.8 rebounds and 7.4 assists per game this year.

(Steve Marcus/Staff)

BEST PREP ATHLETE, FEMALE

Audrey Boch-Collins, Clark Tennis

Not only has Boch-Collins gone undefeated en route to winning the state singles championship three years running, she hasn’t lost a set in the process. She has verbally committed to Baylor University.

BEST SPORTS BOOK

Westgate SuperBook

From welcoming professional bettors with high limits to supplying recreational players with a wealth of options, the world’s largest sportsbook creates a comfortable gambling environment for everyone. 702-732-5111. BEST LONG-TERM PLANNING

BEST SPORTS VALUE

A’ja Wilson

The Aces didn’t make the playoffs in their inaugural campaign in Las Vegas, but Wilson made it a memorable season by scoring 20.7 points per game and winning Rookie of the Year honors.

A night Downtown with the USL prosoccer team is a riot, complete with pregame festivities in the parking lot, llamas on the field during player introductions and passionate fans. Best of all: Tickets start at $10. Cashman Field, lasvegaslightsfc.com.

BEST PRO ATHLETE, MALE

BEST UNSUNG HERO

From his nifty stickhandling (he stole two more pucks while we wrote this) to his deadly shot, Stone showed Vegas his next-level NHL skills—and jelled with his new teammates—after coming over from Ottawa. We can’t wait to see what he does for a full season.

On a roster loaded with big names with highlight-reel moves, it’s easy for a stayat-home defenseman to get lost in the shuffle—even when he’s quietly shutting down the opponents’ leading scorers night after night.

Vegas Golden Knights

Not only has the annual bowl game announced a move to Las Vegas Stadium for the 2020 season, it also has revealed a plan to have a marquee matchup each year through agreements with the Pac12, SEC and Big Ten conferences.

CONDO FINISHINGS THAT ARE TRENDING +

Homebuyers are looking for ways to live smarter, more sustainably and more simply. “We’re always elevating what buyers want—new materials, advanced appliances and what makes sense in the desert climate,” said Uri Vaknin, partner at KRE Capital, which owns the DK Las Vegas portfolio of condos. “Ultimately the question is: How do people want to live within their home?” Choosing the right upgrades, those that are aesthetically appealing and highly functional, can make a huge difference in your lifestyle and day-to-day habits.

WINDOW TREATMENTS Sun shades offer the right amount of protection from heat and light while still maintaining a bright space. Blackout shades and curtains keep a room dark and make it easier to fall and stay asleep in Las Vegas.

There are many smart appliances that can make your life easier. From Wi-Fi-enabled coffee makers, dishwashers, washers and dryers to dual ovens that maximize temperature options, consumers can tailor their space to their needs. “In The Ogden, we put in smart Samsung refrigerators that have a camera inside the fridge. You can connect to it while you’re grocery shopping to see what’s in there,” Vaknin said. They also feature a touchscreen display that allows you to plan meals and create shopping lists, set food expiration notifications, coordinate family schedules, play music and watch TV.

FLOOR MATERIALS FOR THE DESERT The look of hardwood floors is popular, but maintaining hardwood in a dry climate can be challenging. “I recommend porcelain tiles that look like hardwood. People love this option because it doesn’t dry out, doesn’t scratch and is easy to clean. It’s great for people with pets, and it even makes moving furniture easier, because you can slide it over the floor without tearing up the finish,” Vaknin said. Tile that looks like hardwood is practical, durable and aesthetically pleasing.

Quartz is a sought-after option for countertops. “We’ve upgraded thousands of condos in Las Vegas, and granite has become passé in many ways. It’s a natural stone, but it’s porous. So is marble. Quartz is less porous, much more versatile and made with recycled materials,” Vaknin said.

AUTOMATED FEATURES As with smart appliances, there’s also an increasing demand for automated features and smartphone connectivity. “People want their homes to be as technologically advanced as their lives are,” Vaknin said. Some common examples are Nest thermostats, in-house video cameras and Wi-Fi-enabled light switches, which allow people to control those functions from anywhere in the world via their smartphone. Keyless entry is another desirable option, using instead an app or fob.

A decade in, Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health has exceeded expectations

W

BY BRYAN HORWATH VEGAS INC STAFF

hen the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health opened a decade ago, it would have been difficult to forecast the facility’s success. “The idea of brain health and the idea of prevention, those were crazy ideas 10 years ago, but now they’re part of what we do,” said Dr. Marwan Sabbagh, the center’s director. “The field has advanced, and we’ve gone from being non-existing to being front and center in the conversation.” When it opened in 2009, the center had about three dozen employees. As it celebrates its 10-year anniversary this month, it has nearly five times that, and as Sabbagh puts it, a place among the top brain health research and care facilities anywhere. “We’re one of the major drivers … right here in Las Vegas,” Sabbagh said. “When people want to know what the next big thing is with brain health, they turn to us. That’s why I came here. You can be an observer, a participant or a leader, and we’re a leader.” Sabbagh himself is also a leader in his field and came to the Valley in early 2018 from the Barrow Neurological Institute at Dignity Health St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix. The Ruvo Center, which initially expected about 5,000 patient visits per year, had nearly 30,000 visits in 2018. “We’ll blow well past that number for 2019,” Sabbagh said. “We’ve grown beyond what anyone could have ever imagined. We’re going to keep growing, too.”

That growth has surpassed everything for which businessman and founder Larry Ruvo could have hoped. The idea was born in the 1990s when Ruvo and his wife, Camille, felt that his father, the center’s namesake, wasn’t receiving top-tier treatment for his Alzheimer’s. Ruvo wanted to build a facility in San Diego initial-

ly, where the late Leon Thal, a respected Alzheimer’s expert at the University of California San Diego, was practicing. “In a short period of time, Larry Ruvo was able to raise about $30 million, and he wanted to build a center at UC San Diego,” Sabbagh said. “Dr. Thal said to save some money and build something in Las Vegas. At the time [in the late’ 90s], that was a wild, over-themoon idea, but that’s what Larry did.” After partnering with renowned architect Frank Gehry, who had long been a Huntington’s disease research advocate, the idea became reality, and construction of the West Bonneville Avenue building began in 2007. Today, there are four Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health facilities in the U.S., and plans call for a fifth to open in the United Arab Emirates. “My wife and I had a very big dream,” Ruvo said. “It’s been amazing what has happened. Today, Nevada has one of the premier brain health centers in the world. I never thought we’d see five Lou Ruvo centers.” To celebrate the center’s first 10 years, Sabbagh outlined 10 milestones that he says have been important to its success. The list includes the introduction of a new type of imaging to observe the metabolic process in the brain, the securing of an $11 million grant from the National Continued on Page 78

“With Alzheimer’s, the changes in the brain start 20 years before you come into my clinic. I think the cure is if a person’s brain never gets the disease. What I think will happen is we’re going to eventually convert Alzheimer’s from a terminal disease to a chronic disease, like diabetes. We’re close to that.” —Dr. Marwan Sabbagh, director of the Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health

Continued from Page 76 Institutes of Health, and the launch of a research program that has led to more than 70 clinical trials in over 2,500 patients. Along with Alzheimer’s and Huntington’s, the center includes various forms of dementia, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s and Lou Gehrig’s disease among its core focus areas. “One of the largest footprints for research in the entire Cleveland Clinic comes from right here,” Sabbagh said. “It’s exciting. These diseases are very common, and you can go to any doctor, but people are getting on planes and flying here to see us. We’re drawing from 43 states

and seven countries. When you have a scary disease, you want to see people who do the top work.” Cutting-edge care is a point of pride for the center. From music and art therapies to yoga and meditation, it incorporates many methodologies into its processes. And when it comes to the future, Sabbagh is excited. He says a number of “newsworthy” studies will be released in the coming months. He also hinted at a possible expansion of the center’s Downtown footprint. “We’re a major part of the Downtown economy,” Sabbagh said. “I know because the city planners and the mayor keep asking me when we’re going to build

the next building. We’re going to keep doing what we do because families are in crisis. They need help now, not in a few weeks.” One of the next big triumphs in the field, Sabbagh said, will likely be the ability to check for Alzheimer’s by using a blood test. He suspects that’s about three years away. “In 10 years, we’ve seen remarkable improvements in the field, but there’s still no silver bullet today,” Ruvo said. “There’s so much energy out there and so much empathy, I believe that each year, we’ll see more ways to delay the onset of these diseases. Hopefully, we’ll have a cure one day.”

The Lou Ruvo Center’s Six Pillars of Brain Health

1

2

Physical exercise People who exercise regularly may have a lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s. Exercise improves blood flow and memory.

Mental fitness Learning a new hobby or skill is thought to promote new brain cell growth, which could lead to a decrease in the likelihood of developing dementia.

3

4

5

6

Nutrition Foods rich in antioxidants—think fruits, vegetables and fish— can help fend off the effects of oxidation in the brain.

Social interaction Studies have shown that people with a high level of social interaction in their community experience slower rates of memory decline.

Sleep and relaxation Sleep energizes the body and can even reduce buildup in the brain of an abnormal protein called beta-amyloid plaque, which is associated with Alzheimer’s.

Medical health Whether it be hypertension, diabetes, depression or obesity, many adverse health conditions are thought to aid in the decline of brain function. Keep up your overall health to help with your brain health.

what is a credit union?

security Credit unions and banks are regulated and insured by different federal agencies. The National Credit Union Administration governs financial cooperatives, while the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation oversees banks. Both offer protection for up to $250,000 for each qualifying account.

+

Credit unions and banks differ in many ways, but the defining characteristic between these financial institutions is that credit unions are not for profit and member owned, whereas most banks are for profit and owned by shareholders. “Although both offer some of the same products and services, their purposes are dramatically different,” said Tammy Gallegos, chief strategic engagement officer for America First Credit Union. The differences between the two are important when deciding where to put your money and what financial institution is right for you.

structure Credit unions are not for profit, so excess earnings are reinvested back into the organization. Typically these funds are used to improve member experience and financial health. For instance, credit unions can deliver lower rates on loans, higher dividends on deposits, low or no fees, and mobile and online banking. They are cooperatives where members get voting power and decisions are made democratically. “The membership elects a volunteer board of directors who serve without compensation,” Gallegos said. This encourages an environment where members of the board are motivated by community betterment, not financial incentive. By contrast, for-profit banks are owned by shareholders. Customers do not have a say in the organization and board members are paid and typically appointed by the shareholders.

focused on members

Credit unions exist to serve their members and are self-governed. As a result, member service is a top priority and credit unions are consistently rated highly for customer service satisfaction. With members as the core focus, credit unions often have greater flexibility in providing affordable loans, safe savings programs, better rates on checking and savings accounts, and more. “Credit unions work with members to help them achieve their goals and offer programs designed to make that happen. The financial health of one member contributes to the overall financial success of the entire credit union. This relationship means we’re dedicated to each member and how we can best serve them,” Gallegos said.

membership There are many types of credit unions, and each has specific membership requirements. For example, it’s common for labor associations, large companies, schools and other groups to have credit unions for their members, employees or students. There are also credit unions with broader eligibility requirements, accepting membership based on location. According to the Credit Union National Association, more than 118 million Americans are credit union members, a number that grows each year.

access Although larger banks often have more branches and ATMs, credit unions share a cooperative network that gives members widespread access. The Co-Op ATM network allows credit union members to withdraw from ATMs without paying fees.
