The restaurant is going to offer some light bites and different cocktails and that will make it more of an experience. I’ve played many places over the years and all the ones that have been successful for a long time are the ones that have all the things — great service, nice people, all facets in a performance setting. We’re going to bring back some of our great guests like (singer) Jaclyn McSpadden and bring in some new ones, too. And my wife Angie (Pontani) is going to come out. She couldn’t make the last run but she’s one of the greatest burlesque dancers of all time and we’re really excited to have her.
Brian Newman
Bandleader readies late-night show In the spring, Las Vegas only knew Brian Newman as a New York City musician serving as Lady Gaga’s bandleader for the Jazz & Piano portion of her Park Theater residency shows. After launching his own Brian Newman After Dark residency in May at Park MGM’s dramatic NoMad Restaurant and welcoming an incredible array of guest stars—including Gaga herself— the trumpeter, singer and general purveyor of a unique old-meets-new sound has created one of the Strip’s hottest hot spots. Newman’s show is back at NoMad starting at 11 p.m. on Nov. 3 & 6-9, and he’ll return at the end of the year as well. You had a lot of fun last time you were in town. What were some of your favorite moments from the first run of Brian Newman After Dark? I just really love the camaraderie and community of musicians

from Las Vegas. Overall that’s my favorite part, and to play the kind of music we love and bring that to some great audiences. Your show connects to an idea of the Vegas of old, that
late-night lounge act where anything can happen, but you still perform your music on your terms. Is it challenging to create that kind of environment? It’s always challenging to really grab the audience, especially in Las Vegas, but now having been there and done it, and having done this kind of show in some capacity for the past 15 years, it just feels great to bring it to Vegas. It does have that timeless, age-old feeling and at the same time we bring our own influences, whether it’s a bit of newer music or some great guests. What changes have you made or what additions do you have planned?
And what about the next round of Lady Gaga’s Jazz & Piano shows? What can we expect there? There are always surprises and plenty of fun stuff happening. The big thing there is just the incredible music and how we’ve arranged it for that show. I don’t want to say too much because we want everyone to be surprised, but this really is a dream come true, to be in Vegas with my own show and be able to play with her and a 30-piece orchestra. There’s nothing better for me in the world. That different residency show seems to be really flexible and give the band and Gaga plenty of room to play around and switch things up. Absolutely, and not to gush about her, but she’s like a jazz soloist the way she changes every night. The same way I’ll play a trumpet solo and it will be different the next night, she does that with the way she sings and the way she moves and her whole persona. It’s great to be able to see her really stretch on those jazz shows.

COMEDY LEGACY It’s difficult to determine which screen role is best associated with Tim Allen: Tim “The Tool Man” Taylor from smash success sitcom Home Improvement or space adventurer Buzz Lightyear from the Toy Story film series. Most entertainers spend their entire career trying to land one role or performance that will create a legacy; Allen has two.
Considering the Toy Story gig has persevered through four movies, multiple audience generations and almost 25 years, we have to give Buzz the nod in this contest while acknowledging that Allen started his stand-up comedy career in 1975 and continues to perform today. Catch him at The Mirage’s Terry Fator Theatre Nov. 8-9.
MUST-SEE Donny & Marie It’s hard to believe that the curtain is about to close. After more than 10 years and 1,700 performances, Donny and Marie Osmond will wrap up their residency at the Flamingo on Nov. 16, capping one of the most successful shows in Las Vegas history and closing a chapter of their collective and individual life stories in entertainment. The singing siblings were recently honored with the Key to the Las Vegas Strip presented by the Clark County Commission as well as a star on the Las Vegas Walk of Stars right outside the Flamingo. Their final performances are set for 7:30 p.m. Nov. 5-9 and 1216 and, considering how many fans have returned year after year to see their unique, hit-filled set again and again, these will be some of the hottest tickets in town.

Mirage headliner Matt Goss paid a visit to Happy Place at The Shoppes at Mandalay Place and proved something you may already know if you follow him on Instagram: He’s great at selfies, taking tons of photos with a group of friends at the immersive pop-up experience. Luxor and MGM Resorts International executives surprised Carrot Top onstage to announce a five-year contract renewal for the comedian. He’s been entertaining audiences at Luxor since 2005, and his new deal will keep him onstage at the Atrium Showroom into 2025. The extension will make Carrot Top the longest-running comedy show in MGM Resorts history. Korn frontman Jonathan Davis stopped at Caesars Palace to enjoy Absinthe and made time to visit with the Gazillionaire and his assistant Wanda Widdles after the show. On the same night, Zombieland: Double Tap and The Politician actress Zoey Deutch dined at Beauty & Essex, celebrating a friend’s birthday at The Cosmopolitan hot spot. Her group later hit Marquee Nightclub for Deorro’s DJ set. Vegas Golden Knights fan favorite Ryan Reaves celebrated the launch of a new brew, the Dawn Breaker, from his 7Five Brewing Co. at Hyde Lounge at T-Mobile Arena. Reaves signed autographs and participated in a Q&A session with in-arena host and local radio personality Wayne “Big D” Danielson as teammate Deryk Engelland, announcer Bruce Cusick and local singer Carnell “Golden Pipes” Johnson joined the festivities after the Knights’ win over Ottawa.

HER VEGAS
A Kiss From Madame X
Madonna as fierce, weird and wonderful as ever on latest tour “I will never be what society expects me to be. I have seen too much,” rasps Madonna, praying in the dark before introducing herself as Madame X in the video for recent hit “Medellín.” But society can’t possibly have expectations for the pop phenom after nearly 40 years of watching her. She is about art that shakes you, even if the statements she makes tend to be highly danceable. That’s the vibe of her 14th studio album and eponymous tour, which makes its way to a newly renovated Colosseum at Caesars Palace Nov. 7 and 9-10. Madame X’s world is the stuff of noir and Lisbon nightclubs, personal expressions of love and blistering political postures. That is to say, it’s a theatrical whirlwind, anchored by the
ever-magnetic 61-year-old. Whether unleashing her acidic wit or swaggering in heels and fishnets, she commands the room. The setup is more Broadway musical than stadium show, and with that intimacy comes the rule that all attendees leave their phones locked in soft cases before taking their seats. Madonna wants to see eyes, not screens. Fans want to see some old hits on the set list, and while the focus is on fresh material (including homages to the fado music she’s gotten into living in Portugal), rich treatments are given to such classics as “Like a Prayer” (1989), “Vogue” (1990) and “Frozen” (1998). The latter is stripped way down, just the singer and a
giant screen projecting artful visuals of eldest daughter Lourdes. That screen shows an American flag superimposed on ominous smoke for “God Control” and its stirring message about gun violence. It shows footage of protests around discrimination for “I Rise.” But as much as Madonna relishes lending her voice to heavy issues, she also revels and jokes and cha-chas through the moods of Madame X. So if you expect anything, let it be rhinestones with your dose of reality. –Erin Ryan Caesars Palace, 8:30 p.m. Nov. 7 & 9-10, starting at $55 plus tax and fee. 800.745.3000 Ticketmaster

Bringing the Beat Before Spanish-language songs were topping the pop charts, the rock en español movement of the 1980s brought Latin music into the international mainstream, and bands like Caifanes, Maná and Fobia are still going strong decades later, carrying the torch for rock music throughout Latin America. Mexican band Fobia formed in 1987 and signed its first record deal later that year, after a demo session produced by Saul Hernandez of Caifanes. Following extensive touring throughout the ’90s, Fobia broke up in 1997. But the band continued to influence a new generation of Latin artists, and in 2004 they reunited, reaching a fan base that had only grown in their absence. Since then, Fobia has released two more albums of original material, alongside live recordings and hits compilations, and the band’s latest release, Pastel, is a double live album documenting its 2018 30th-anniversary concert in Mexico City. It’s a celebration of a career spent both setting and transcending musical trends. –Josh Bell

More Than a Classic Magical Mischief Penn & Teller have been performing their brand of magic and comedy for four decades, continuously updating their material. It’s been historically consistent in its slightly dark tone, but the atmosphere feels different at current shows. Along with Penn having shed more than 100 pounds and several feet of hair, the mood of the show feels a little lighter, maybe even … family friendly. For example, children of all ages are invited onstage for a bit that involves a pygmy

elephant—or at least a close approximation of one. “This show has a slightly different feel from previous shows, and the sense that I have is that it’s a little more sort of totally inclusive of everybody,” said Teller. But don’t fret, audiences—the show still peppers in some of the darker moments that the two magicians originally became famous for. –Matt Kelemen Rio, 9 p.m. Sun.-Wed. & Sat., $75.09-$95.27 VIP plus tax and fee. 702.777.2782

Country Evolving Judging by the continuing success of Florida Georgia Line, Brian Kelley and Tyler Hubbard have transcended the bro-country era since emerging in 2012 with smash hit “Cruise” and have become fixtures of country music superstardom. The duo’s crossover anthem with Bebe Rexha, “Meant to Be,” was omnipresent in 2018, a year that Kelley and Hubbard capped off with their Florida Georgia Line Live From Las Vegas residency. They’re back at Zappos Theater inside Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino for four dates in November, hot off the heels of finishing a tour in support of their Top 5 album Can’t Say I Ain’t Country. Their knack for combining the sounds of Travis Tritt and Tupac while flowing lyrically like Jay Z listening to Alabama in the boombox has paid off handsomely to the point where Kelly and Hubbard headlined their own festival in September at Indianapolis Speedway. They proved they’re born showmen in Vegas, providing patrons in the back seats with as good of a
show as fans in the front row witness. They’ll be back on tour with Kenny Chesney next year, but their return to the Strip is the last time fans can catch them live in 2019. – Matt Kelemen

Rising Talent For young music fans, online music-sharing service SoundCloud has become the go-to place for discovering new independent artists, far more than old-fashioned radio or even major musicstreaming outlets. Hip-hop artists especially have benefited from the immediacy and direct access of SoundCloud, giving rise to a whole movement dubbed “SoundCloud rap.” But it’s not only rappers: In just a few years, pop-R&B singer Sabrina Claudio has gone from posting cover songs on SoundCloud to posting her own original music, scoring chart hits and a major-label record deal. Claudio built her popularity with singles including “Unravel Me,” “Belong to You” and “Don’t Let Me Down” (featuring fellow R&B singer Khalid), and she recently released her second full-length album, Truth Is, which includes a duet with One Direction superstar Zayn on “Rumors.” “The process of this album has helped me not only grow as a woman, but also as a human being as well,” Claudio said in a statement announcing the new album. At 23, she’s still just getting started,
finding her voice and developing her sound, and launching her career by reaching listeners directly online has allowed her to remain authentic, even as she approaches pop stardom. –Josh Bell

In a perfect world, pets would live forever, bacon would be a vegetable and all of Will Ferrell’s movies would be hysterical. Alas, the world is far from perfect, and its flaws extend to the music business, where creative differences, personality clashes, ego and greed result in the vast majority of bands eventually splintering. Sometimes it’s one lineup change, sometimes multiple—and sometimes the turnover is so extensive that the band carries on without a single founding member. Why? Because in the end, it’s about the songs and a fan base’s everlasting connection to (and love for) them.
Feel like blowing off some steam? Fire it up, aim and shoot away as Machine Guns Vegas (3501 Aldebaran Ave., 800.757.4668) features an assortment of arms, as well as packages like The Seal Team, where you can experience the weapons that a military unit would use.

Nobody understands this better than John Payne. In 1992, he replaced John Wetton as frontman for supergroup Asia, holding that position until 2006 when the only remaining original member left to briefly reform the original lineup. Months later, Asia’s four founding members struck a deal with Payne that allowed him to press on as Asia Featuring John Payne. Since then, they’ve been waving the Asia flag the world over, performing timeless classics like “Heat of the Moment,” “Sole Survivor,” and “Only Time Will Tell,” much to the enjoyment of fans looking for a blast of the past. –Matt Jacob

A Riveting Display It would be nearly impossible to overstate the importance of Mystère to the city of Las Vegas. The Cirque du Soleil show was the first one ever performed in Sin City and now anchors many successful Cirque productions on The Strip. Mystère, which debuted on Christmas 1993, marked the first time a production show of this magnitude was given its own theater instead of a mobile circus tent, thereby upping the ante on the luxury and audience experience. Directed by the legendary Franco Dragone, Mystère is filled with acts often created from original backgrounds: There
are The Asicots, aka The Double Faces, who thrill with their work on the Chinese Pole, and The Archangels, who bounce one another into the air via teeterboard. And then there’s Alice, a giant inflatable snail that grows throughout the show. Mystère is also filled with comedy. Brian Le Petit has been a favorite character since 2000. He’s a mischievous clown who breaks up performances onstage and also goes into the crowd, taking audience members’ popcorn and creating an uproar. Now, more than 25 years into its run, Mystère remains a vital element of Las Vegas entertainment. –Jason Harris
Making Changes Bonding is an important part of Menopause the Musical. The long-running production, billed as celebrating women and “The Change,” depicts four women at Bloomingdale’s in New York, while shopping for, and fighting over, intimate apparel. The group commiserates over hot flashes, night sweats and memory loss while also bursting into song, delivering musical parodies skewering symptoms, all based on hits from the ’60s through the ’80s. –Matt Kelemen Harrah’s, 7:30 p.m. Mon. & Wed.-Fri., 4 & 7:30 p.m. Tues. & Sat., $64.90-$89.21 VIP plus tax and fee. 702.777.2782

Take a seat at the Signature Bar or relax in The Library or The Courtyard, and for larger groups looking to splurge, reserve the 10-seat Vault Room. Inside this room, guests will enjoy a private dining and whiskey experience, as well as cigar pairings. Longtime hot spot Rhumbar at The Mirage recently received a refresh, and now guests can enjoy new signature cocktails, new snack
menu and new cigar offerings. The patio, lush with towering palm trees and foliage, has been a popular spot for both tourists and locals to enjoy handcrafted rum cocktails, hookah and live DJ sets. But a sometimes-unheralded aspect of Rhumbar is that guests can choose from an impressive selection of cigars; most are reasonably priced at under $10, but there are also a few high-end, coveted brands here. The always-packed Casa Fuente at The Forum Shops at Caesars is an intimate cigarbar space where guests have long enjoyed the always-stocked favorites Fuente and Ashton cigars, in addition to many other well-known brands. There are also specialty cocktails and rare whiskies. –Kiko Miyasato Montecristo Cigar Bar photo by Dave Burk Rhumbar photo by 501 Studios

The D Tea
Darren Banks
Executive casino host finds his goals in Vegas For the D and Golden Gate executive casino host Darren Banks, it’s all about the people. The Canadian native played hockey for many years (including with the Boston Bruins), and after he retired, worked for the railroad. But when the owner of the D, Derek Stevens, asked Banks if he wanted to come to Vegas, he found he did. “Derek Stevens is a friend of mine, so when he asked me if l wanted to move to Vegas, it was a no-brainer. I just picked up and left.” In his role as host, Banks takes care of a variety of guests on their trips to Vegas. He’ll also fill that role with Circa, Stevens’ underconstruction hotel (when it opens in 2020, it will have the biggest sports book in Vegas). “I make sure their reservations are put in, their limo pick-up, maybe they want to go to go to a football game, or a hockey game, or play golf, so

I kind of organize that for them. So when they get here it’s ... smooth sailing for them,” he said. One of the perks of the job, he said, is that “I meet different people every day. I deal with old, young, men, women and it’s fun meeting those people, getting them to come back. It’s more a friend relationship with some of these people.” He also acts as the face of the D in some respects—he and Stevens often hang at the Longbar. “People know that I’m there, they know Derek is there, so people kind of flock to us. It’s a nice meeting spot; you see something new every day. It’s pretty interesting.” Banks doesn’t regret his move to Vegas one bit. “I have a boss I enjoy coming to work for ... I enjoy the weather here, I can play golf every day, I can play hockey—I never see snow ... unless I want to.” –Nina King
While you’re hanging out at the Longbar at the D, talking sports or shooting the breeze with Banks or boss Derek Stevens, try the D Tea—it’s a refreshing concoction that reminds many of green tea, but like a Long Island iced tea, it may pack a stronger punch than you anticipate. The drink contains Jameson, peach schnapps, sweet and sour and Sprite, all garnished with lemon and a cherry. The cocktail is also available upstairs in the D’s vintage casino area at the Vue Bar, which, like its name, has a view of Fremont Street outside. –NK

It’s essentially a next-generation gastropub, but there’s no right or wrong way to eat and drink at this dynamic destination along Mandalay Bay’s famed restaurant row. Start with small bites like oysters with Tabasco gel and tequila mignonette, smoked
salmon crudo with horseradish cream, crispy pork belly with black garlic jus or the caviar “fried egg.” Share a cheese board or a platter of Casella’s Heritage Prosciutto. Or keep an entrée all to yourself, hearty offerings such as beef short ribs with braised collard greens or wood-roasted scallops with peaches, lardo and arugula. And make sure to find an expertly crafted cocktail to match the meal, whether it’s a classic rum swizzle, a Suntory Toki whiskey highball or one of the bar’s draft cocktails. It’s an experience all its own. –Brock Radke

World Finals draw the best bull riders to Vegas
2018 World Champion Kaique Pacheco
40 11.3.19 LasVegasMagazine.com
It’s one of the most suspenseful moments that can be found in extreme sports. The rider has a brief time for his instinct to tell him the bull looks like it will give an optimal performance. The bull loses energy with every second as the clock ticks toward zero, but if he is disoriented when the rider gives the signal to open the chute, the rider is less likely to become one with the kicking beast and make the eight-second mark. The best of the best rack up points that qualify them for the Professional Bull Riders’ Unleash The Beast World Finals in Las Vegas, the highlight of PBR’s World Finals Week. The trail to Vegas starts every year in Madison Square Garden and winds throughout the country wherever there is a concentration of cowboy culture. PBR stars from Brazil, Canada, Australia, Mexico and the United States score points in cities such as Billings, Mont., Houston, Greensboro, N.C., Minneapolis and Sioux Falls,

S.D., until November when T-Mobile Arena is transformed into a state-of-the-art rodeo ring. A transformation is happening within the sport itself as well. The first generation of future riders born after Ty Murray and friends formed the PBR a quarter-century ago is all grown up. Kings of the sport such as J.B. Mauney and Silvano Alves are passing the torch to competitors like 2018 World Champion Kaique Pacheco, who dreamed of winning the PBR as he grew up in Brazil. Pacheco overcame injuries last year to score the most points throughout the season and earn a coveted gold belt buckle, although he was in too much pain in Las Vegas to make a good event showing. The World Finals Event winner was Marco Eguchi, who earned a career-high $372,000 and was ranked No. 5 in the year-end standings. This year Eguchi was No. 8 with one more Unleash the Beast event before T-Mobile Arena, while Pacheco’s injuries sidelined him for the current season. That leaves competitors such as Jose Vitor Leme, who finished No. 2 in last year’s final world standings and was leading the pack in points this year in mid-October. Jess Lockwood landed on his head last month in Greensboro, where Mauney suffered a broken fibula, but was hot on Leme’s heels at No. 2. Chase Outlaw, João Ricardo Vieira and Cooper Davis rounded out the top five riders, while rising crowd favorites such as Mason Taylor, Daylon Swearingen and Ryan Dirteater aim to break into the top 10 by the end of World Finals. PBR Finals Week has much more going on during its five-day run. The PBR Finals Week Western Gift Expo 2019 takes place at South Point Arena inside South Point Hotel. Pre-event concerts happen daily beginning Wednesday at Toshiba Plaza, adjacent to T-Mobile Arena, with a lineup including Casey Barnes, Chase Bryant, Kasey Tyndall and Chevel Shepherd of NBC’s The Voice. Parties, fan encounters and offbeat events can be browsed at pbrfinalsweek.com, but in the end it all centers around one rider and one bull, eight seconds at a time.

Superstar Dionne Warwick presents intimate show By MATT KELEMEN Photo by DAVID NATHAN
If Dionne Warwick was in a low gear before recording her latest pop-soul album She’s Back, she changed that perception this year. Warwick preceded the May release of her first studio album in five years with four performances at Bally’s, then recorded a Christmas album that she wrapped up before taking command of Cleopatra’s Barge inside Caesars Palace in September. This two-month stretch of An Evening with Dionne Warwick ends later this month, but her decades-long rule as a lifelong member of Vegas performing royalty remains. That life began surrounded by music. Warwick began to sing at a young age as a member of the Drinkard Singers, a gospel group led by her father. She grew up singing spirituals alongside her aunt Cissy Drinkard (later Cissy Houston). As was often the case with gospel singers with pop potential, Warwick’s path led her to secular music by the early ’60s. Although her stage presence already exuded sophistication and soothing sensuality, her partnership with Burt Bacharach and Hal David helped enhance and cement that image.

Superior Sounds For Carlos Santana (House of Blues at Mandalay Bay, 800.745.3000), celebrating another year of his House of Blues residency (the band performs Nov. 3, 6 and 8-10) is a great achievement, but he sees it more like a blessing. “I don’t even call it work, or a job, or a gig. It’s a golden opportunity to, each day, try it all over again in a different way,” he says. “We use

the House of Blues like a laboratory to try out different melodies, different rhythms, different moods, different tempos ... The experiment is how to make the spiritual and the physical dance together.” Santana’s residency affords him the ability to continue the unending search for intimacy and innocence within his repertoire, and at this point in his career, his musical ideas are fluid and spontaneous.

“I have confidence that everything that I learned and pursued, I don’t have to reach out anymore. It’s in my heart,” he says. “I feel supremely confident ... enough to dismiss my mind and just invite my heart to just tell another story.” That confidence allows hits like “Evil Ways” and “Europa” to become classic jams that are willing to change and have the courage to be vulnerable. –Alex Haase
