NOTES

From the Editor The Best Is Yet to Come

Visit any social media feed regarding Las Vegas, and odds are you’ll find one common question: “When are big-name entertainers and shows coming back?” I have to admit, I’ve asked the question plenty of times myself. You can’t think of New York without thinking of Broadway, and you can’t think of Las Vegas without thinking of Cirque du Soleil, Carrot Top and David Copperfield. The unfortunate answer to that question is ... we just don’t know yet. Some entertainers remained optimistic that they’d return this year. Barry Manilow, who performs at Westgate, originally rescheduled his shows to later in the year, only to then tell his fans he wouldn’t be back until 2021. Many other shows and entertainers have been completely silent as to a return date. It remains to be seen when live entertainment will return to Las Vegas—and what it will look like when it does. But one thing I can say with certainty: Our shows and entertainers want to come back. They cannot wait to get on that stage again and transport you to a happy place for an hour or two. And until that happens, Las Vegas Magazine wants to remind you why you want to buy your tickets as soon as the green light is given. This week’s centerpiece feature is a special one—associate editor Kiko Miyasato has assem-

bled a loving look back at one of the city’s premier music festivals, downtown’s Life is Beautiful. If you haven’t yet experienced this wonderful mix of music, arts and education, check out her feature (“A Beautiful Legacy,” page 20) and start planning your visit next year; the event’s organizers plan to return in 2021. And just because there’s no live entertainment in Las Vegas right now doesn’t mean you can’t have a blast here. Our issue is packed with options ranging from restaurants and sports books to attractions and bars (one huge development: our governor, Steve Sisolak, lifted the ban on bars in Nevada). There’s so many great places to eat, but in this issue we’ve focused on Osteria Costa at The Mirage, Nobu at Caesars Palace, Crack Shack at Park MGM, Sickies Garage Burgers & Brew at Town Square, Bugsy & Meyer’s Steakhouse at Flamingo and Borracha Mexican Cantina at Green Valley Ranch. Starting your food journey at any of these venues is highly recommended. Elsewhere, enjoy what’s left of our warm weather at Liquid Pool at Aria; take people-watching to another level at Fremont Street Experience; and get your pulse racing at the Big Apple Coaster at New York-New York. And best of all, enjoy the knowledge that the best is yet to come.

Blast From the Past The first thing you notice about Bugsy & Meyer’s Steakhouse is its unique entrance— it simulates a rear entrance through a “bakery,” a nod to the days when legendary figures like Meyer Lansky and Bugsy Siegel entered establishments through the back way. The visual delights are just beginning, from the ’20s and ’30s vibe courtesy of designer Jonathan Adler to large plate-glass windows through which you can see chefs work and various aged meats on display.

Head chef Lamar Moore, the winner of Vegas Chef Prizefight, has put his personal stamp all over the menu, from yellowtail sashimi, served with truffle and black bean paste, piquillo pepper and Iberico ham, to the mouth-watering Prime beef tartare, accompanied by foie gras and pan-toasted country bread. For your main course, the in-house, 60day, dry-aged steak program is the place to start. We recommend the Mishima wagyu rib

cap and dry-aged Prime bone-in New York, but we can’t blame you if you want to opt for other attractive options like fresh Dover sole meuniere, pan-seared sea scallops or Mary’s roasted chicken. The dessert menu has many rich and caloric options, but we really recommend the Meyer Lemon, one of the more unique concoctions on the Strip—a circular crispy meringue drizzled with creamy lemon cream and almond sable. —Ken Miller

Good for What Ails You The legend goes this way: A group of friends in North Dakota would call in sick to work so they could work on their cars in a garage. Soon the group grew, and they would have cookouts with, of course, burgers. So emerged Sickies Garage Burgers & Brews, a North Dakota-based franchise that reflects the philosophy of its founders: Great burgers, cars, fellowship and, best of all, a place to dine when you decide to call in sick! The newest location in Las Vegas is going to boggle your mind, both with its décor—include vehicles hanging upside down from the ceiling, license plates from all over the country and some real Americana on the walls—and its menu. The burger portion alone is stacked with goodness, including the Hot Momma, highlighted by ghost pepper cheese, peppered bacon and Mom’s Secret sweet jalapeño jam, and the halfpound wagyu burger Jalapeno Cream Cheese, served on a Parmesan and black pepper bun. But there’s so, so, much more. Want a burger for breakfast? No problem, thanks to the Glazed Doughnut Burger. Got a sweet tooth? There’s a ridiculous array of milkshakes, which you can—and should—make alcoholic. –Ken Miller 6629 Las Vegas Blvd. S., #120, 725.735.5400

Everything Will Be All Right Every day, something about 2020 kicks you in the gut. The real world has never been more real than it is right now. Yet, right now is the best time to regain the amusement, innocence and bliss that defined your early childhood—all it takes is a single day at Adventuredome. Maybe you’re feeling anxiety. Good Times Continue Despite the coronavirus pandemic, Vegas is still chock-full of good times. And there may not be a better time to be had than at Nine Fine Irishmen, an authentic Irish pub that was built in Ireland, disassembled and rebuilt in Vegas. One can dine on traditional cuisine such as shepherd’s pie, lamb stew, and fish and chips; sip a wide range of beers and other spirits (beer cocktails like the Blacksmith are recommended); and during wee hours, get craic to live ambient music from Sin é Rí Ra. –AH New York-New York, 702.740.3311

A Night of Sophistication

Restaurant’s gorgeous design matches stellar Japanese cuisine The elegant Nobu restaurant at Caesars Palace is also the world’s largest, at 11,000 square feet. The sleek design incorporates a variety of stone, wood, metal and fabric in a modern style. Matching the extensive dining areas is an equally extensive menu, with a ton of dishes available. Start with edamame or shishito peppers—or both. You can get a variety of both hot and cold main dishes, such as black cod butter lettuce, seafood tobanyaki, lobster shiitake salad and grilled lamb chops. If you’re in the mood for tempura, try the shrimp and vegetable.

But the sashimi, nigiri and sushi selection may be the biggest draw. It’s a doozy here, including salmon, yellowtail, sea urchin, red snapper, scallop, octopus and even Japanese wagyu on the sashimi and nigiri menu; sushi comes in both hand roll and cut styles. The variety is plentiful, with vegetable, lobster, California, spicy tuna and many others waiting for you. An omakase tasting, where the chef sends out his choices for the night, is the way to get the best of all worlds, typically including much of the freshest offerings all across the full menu. At

Nobu, you can get both a vegetarian and regular omakase tasting. (It is required that the entire party get the omakase.) You may want to add a little alcoholic something to the meal, and boy, does Nobu ever have you covered. The restaurant offers Japanese whiskey flights amid a huge menu of brands, premium sakes and sake flights, specialty cocktails, and wine and beer. An extensive to-go menu is also available, in case you want a decadent night in. –Nina King Caesars Palace, 702.785.6628

Keeping Abreast When the chicken craving hits, The Crack Shack has got you covered. The trendy restaurant in front of Park MGM takes the humble bird and presents it in a multitude of ingenious, inventive presentations. Enjoy such goodies as the Coop Deville, a crispy fried Jidori breast accompanied by pickled Fresno chilies, Napa cabbage and lime mayo on a brioche bun. Get a fried chicken fix, and you can get it tossed in a dipping sauce as well. If you need biscuits for that fried chicken, check out the itty-bitty minis with miso-maple butter! Mexican poutine covers fries with pollo asado and jalapeño cheese sauce; it might just be the only reason you need to head on in. Plus, you can get yourself a cocktail or two, including canned Cutwater cocktails like the Tequila Margarita or Tequila Paloma. There’s also a variety of beer, including Orderville, a craft IPA from Modern Times, and Weekend Vibes from Coronado Brewing. And since it’s located Stripside at Park MGM, it’s easy to take a stroll and hop right in when the craving hits. –Nina King 702.820.5991

Watch the Sky! One of the major draws of Las Vegas is easily accessible and doesn’t require a reservation or a ticket—we’re talking, of course, about Fremont Street Experience, one giant, immersive, unforgettable experience. You’ll find performers onstage and retail kiosks up and down the length of the street, and overhead, Viva Vision, the light-andmusic show that flashes on a huge curved screen arching over the promenade. A recent upgrade to the canopy has made it even more intense.

You must have a ticket for SlotZilla, but watching is always free (height and weight restrictions apply). You can also dine at numerous restaurants in the resorts surrounding Fremont Street—getting pizza at The Grotto in Golden Nugget, enjoying a romantic interlude at Hugo’s Cellar in Four Queens, or noshing on a steak in Andiamo in The D. –NK vegasexperience.com

Game Day Heaven

From beer to food, this bar is sports central We’re in for a big sports week. This Sunday, the Las Vegas Raiders are up against Cam Newton and the new-look New England Patriots. Then, next Sunday, the Raiders will be back in Allegiant Stadium to take on the Buffalo Bills. We’ll also find out which two teams will be in the NBA Finals. If that’s not enough, the Major League Baseball Postseason starts on Tuesday. It’s hard to believe that the pandemic, of all things, would bless us with so many thrilling sports games to watch at one time. There is, however, one slight problem: Where are you going to watch all the action unfold? Well, let us make the decision easy for you. There may not be a more perfect spot to enjoy sports than at The Still.

There’s more than 50 beers on the menu, ranging from light and easy (like a crisp Corona with a lime wedge) to rich, strong and flavorful (like the potent Dragon’s Milk by New Holland Brewing). Then there’s a bevy of cocktails, such as the pick-your-spirit Moscow mule; the mango martini, which mixes Ciroc peach vodka with mango, lime and Chandon Brut; and the There’s

Something About Mary, an out-of-this-world bloody Mary with a chorizo seasoned rim. As for the food, The Still specializes in stadium-style snacks and entrées. Nachos are stacked high and loaded with the standard trimmings, such as pico de gallo, guacamole, Oaxaca cheese and pickled jalapeños. Then there’s the crispy chicken wings slathered in a spicy Korean-style sauce, beer battered fish and chips, chicken street tacos topped with a pineapple slaw, cheesburger sliders, and a Philly cheese steak panini. Helping people feel beautiful and inspired Las Vegas native, Jennifer Zanni has been helping visitors feel beautiful for many years. She went from playing with makeup and styling her Barbie’s hair when she was little to pursuing an education in the beauty industry. After graduating from cosmetology school, she went on to help open salons across the Strip, including properties like Treasure Island and The Venetian, where she helped launch the lauded Canyon Ranch Spa + Fitness. Zanni has also helped run a local medical spa, as well as salons inside New York-New York, Harrah’s and, most recently, Color Salon by Michael Boychuck at Caesars Palace. It was her relationship with the celebrity hair stylist that helped her land her current position as the salon and spa director at brand-new Michael Boychuck Salon at The Stirling Club. “I love Michael, he’s great,” Zanni says. “He has my back. I have his back. We just work really well together, and we have a great relationship.”

As the director, Zanni oversees the salon inside one of the city’s most exclusive addresses, Turnberry Place, a high-end condominium enclave where residents have access to the salon and spa. But, part of the “beauty” is that Vegas visitors can book an appointment and enjoy the benefits of the upscale experience, too. “There is more of the feeling of exclusivity here,” Zanni says. “It’s more intimate.” And Zanni and her team are ready to make each client look and feel their best. “I just love making people feel beautiful and inspired,” she says. “Both men and women. To give them that confidence.” In addition to the full-service salon portion, Zanni oversees the spa and the barbershop, and is overseeing the completion of the medspa that will open soon. “I really, really enjoy what I do,” she says. “I like the hospitality and beauty industry. Osteria Costa pays tribute to the food of the Amalfi Coast DON’T YOU WANT A SLICE OF PIZZA RIGHT ABOUT NOW? I mean, you’re in Las Vegas, you’re walking around a lot of casinos, expending a lot of energy and burning a lot of calories. Sure, you want a slice—and maybe a little bit more. If you find yourself walk-

ing the floor of The Mirage, you’ll find plenty of that satisfying foodstuff and much more at Osteria Costa, a welcoming environment with lots of people-watching—and limoncello made in-house. And the pizzas here are Neopolitan, since the restaurant cel-

ebrates the cuisine of the Amalfi Coast. Even if you aren’t 100 percent sure of exactly where that is, once you dig into this menu, you won’t really care. All you need to know is that you’ll enjoy this meal from beginning to end, especially if you start off with one of the

NOSH CHEERS signature cocktails like the Lemon, made with that aforementioned house-made limoncello, fresh lemon, Absolut vodka, egg white and orange bitters. Or try a classic like the Negroni, featuring Roku gin, Campari, sweet vermouth and orange. Either one will get your palate ready for whatever you decide to order. Appetizers are varied and highly recommended. Heck, if you’ve got a big enough group, order them all, starting with calamari, light and full of flavor, thanks to pomodoro sauce, lemon and chili; then move on to some meatballs, perfect in consistency and deeply satisfying, served with whipped ricotta cheese and basil; a lovely insalata misti salad with cucumbers, sunflower seeds and white balsamic; and, finally, the Caesar salad, the classic you love done wonderfully right with romaine, garlic dressing and Parmigiano. If you do opt for one of the woodfired pizzas, the classic margherita is the perfect place to start. It’s so simple, with mozzarella, pomodoro sauce and basil, but it’s just ... perfect, especially with its light, crispy crust. The same goes for the spicy Calabrian with salami, chilies and honey, or

the sausage, with house-made sausage, fennel and onion. If Neopolitan-style pizza is not your thing, no worries—all your favorite classics are here as well, from linguine and clams, flavored with garlic, chiles and lemon, lasagna packed with sausage and mozzarella, and chicken Parmigiana, a large, breaded chicken breast with pomodoro sauce, mozzarella and basil. Is pasta more your thing? Get ready for a treat. All pasta here is handmade, from the spaghetti and meatballs with pomodoro sauce, basil and garlic, rigatoni all Norma with pomodoro, eggplant and basil, or fettucine Bolognese with aged pecorino and black pepper, You might want to get that to-go box early: Osteria Costa does not skimp on the pasta portions.

If surf and turf is more your jam, choose from either a juicy, 18-ounce, bone-in ribeye Fiorentina with lemon and salsa verde, or fork-tender salmon piccata, served with lemon and capers. Whatever you order, don’t forget sides like broccolini, garlic potatoes or crispy Brussels sprouts (the latter side is one of our favor-

ite things here, and may have you fighting for the last piece). It seems hard to imagine you might have room for dessert at this point, but you would probably kick yourself for not at least trying delights like tiramisu and lemon ricotta cheesecake. Decadent? Sure, but then again, you’ve got all that walking to do afterward ...

For more than seven years, the Life is Beautiful festival helped change the footprint of downtown Las Vegas. In 2013, its organizers joined the efforts to help revitalize an oft-overlooked area by bringing a multiday celebration of music, food and art to more than a dozen city blocks. In the years following, the festival was expanded to three days and continued to leave a lasting impression on the city and its community. Life is Beautiful made its mission clear early on: “The chance to get a lot of creative minds together and create something new for Vegas and the festival space,” said Craig Asher Nyman, head of music and live performances for the festival. “If you take it back to the beginning of Life is Beautiful, everything was built around providing fans with a sense of acceptance, inclusion, wanting you to go out and chase your dreams.” Year after year, as the festival’s roster and recognition grew, the mission, according to its website, morphed into “a rallying cry for positivity, unity and creativity in our community. It is an initiative to bring people together and spark conversations that inspire and empower the values of enduring happiness.” This year, the nation and the world were dealt a heavy blow with the COVID-19 pandemic. Just like many canceled events around the country, Life is Beautiful was not immune to the impact of the coronavirus, and the festival’s 2020 edition was nixed. The end of this month would have welcomed the three-day celebration. So, in honor of the festival, Las Vegas Magazine takes a look at some of the beautiful moments throughout the years.

From finding the funding, constructing the experience and figuring out all the logistics to the hiring of the bands, artists, speakers, chefs and security, the festival is one amazing and commendable endeavor. For the past seven years, Life is Beautiful and its team have banded together to inspire guests. “If you loved playing guitar when you grew up and you stopped and you came to the festival, maybe it could rekindle that passion,” Nyman said. “Or if you saw an artist painting a mural, maybe that reminds you of when you loved painting and it inspires you to pick up that canvas and paint. Or if you really love to cook, you could be inspired by one of the celebrity chefs doing a demo right in front of you. ... Everything was about coming together to create the best experience one could possibly have— to inspire people to go out and chase their dreams.”

Foodies and casual food fans alike have been able to eat, learn and interact with some of the industry’s top culinary talents, including chefs Nobu Matsuhisa, Hubert Keller, José Andrés, Cat Cora and Shawn McClain. In the festival’s most recent years, a crowd favorite has been The Cookout, where over an open firepit some of the city’s famous restaurants, like José Andrés’ Jaleo and Michael Symon’s Mabel’s BBQ, hosted a cookout gathering. “To celebrate the restaurants and chefs that you have in town versus having to bring in concessions is such a plus—we’re so lucky to have the talent in our own backyard,” Nyman said.

Over the years the festival welcomed world-renowned and local artists whose large murals, graffiti and installations changed the streets of downtown into a living, breathing, urban art gallery. Two examples can still be seen today on the Plaza Hotel, large murals by artists D*Face and Shepard Fairey that scale two sides of the entire hotel. The Big Rig Jig art installation by artist Mike Ross went on display at the 2016 festival and can still be viewed at Fergusons Downtown. While some of the art has since been covered, moved or taken down, part of the aim of Life is Beautiful was to immerse festivalgoers in interactive art experiences—like 2014’s multisensory Western Hotel art experience, where not only viewing art but participating in creating art was encouraged.

Throughout the years the festival has hosted some of the most noteworthy headlining acts: Kanye West, Billie Eilish (pictured below), The Weeknd, Florence + The Machine, Post Malone, Imagine Dragons, Mumford & Sons, Travis Scott, Gorillaz, Weezer, Lorde, The Black Keys, Foo Fighters, OutKast and Kendrick Lamar. But Life is Beautiful also helped to introduce future huge stars at smaller stages like the Huntridge—those include G-Eazy, Dua Lipa and Lizzo. And the Vegas crowd went wild for one of its hometown heroes, Brandon Flowers, when halfway through his 2015 solo performance, his band, The Killers, joined him onstage for a surprise six-song set.

Let’s not forget the weather— Las Vegas is notorious for some extremely hot days throughout the year. But one of the beauties of the festival has been the fine, welcoming temperatures during the festival’s three days at the end of September. There’s nothing like twilight time each day when the sun starts to set, the air turns slightly cooler and each space lights up with neon and sparkling lights. There’s a definite buzz and vibe to the festival during these magical hours that, year after year, makes for some memorable strolling through the streets of downtown.

.24. 9.20.20 LAS VEGAS MAGAZINE

A large group of speakers have been invited to bring thought-provoking, comical, inspirational and educational moments to the festival over the years. Highlights include Bill Nye the Science Guy, Queer Eye’s Jonathan Van Ness, Zappos founder and early downtown champion Tony Hsieh, members of the politically charged band Pussy Riot, web sensation and anti-bullying activist Lizzie Velasquez, one-time Las Vegas mayor and mob attorney Oscar Goodman, magicians Penn & Teller, and comedians like Nikki Glaser, Fred Armisen, Michelle Wolf and Pete Davidson.

Since its inception, Life is Beautiful has not only drawn Las Vegas locals to explore an ever-evolving part of their city, but also welcomed music, art and food lovers from across the country and globe. In its inaugural year the festival welcomed slightly more than 20,000 guests; but year after year the attendance and popularity grew. By the 2018 edition more than 55,000 people flooded downtown’s streets, and by 2019 it was the second-highest-grossing festival in the country with more than 150,000 people in attendance over three days. The fans have helped inject more than $350 million into the city’s economy.

One of the most awe-inspiring moments at Life is Beautiful happened in 2014 when Cirque du Soleil’s The Beatles LOVE show joined forces with the Las Vegas Philharmonic onstage. “That was one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever witnessed,” Nyman said. “It was the middle of the afternoon, clear skies, the orchestra with the performers—I still get goosebumps just talking about it.” The Cirque show’s musical director and George Martin’s son, Giles Martin, had to rewrite the score for the orchestra to follow and several important approvals needed to happen before the show got the green light, but the results will go down in history as one of the festival’s most unique and unforgettable acts.

With 2020 considered a wash for most concerts and festivals, fans of Life is Beautiful should be happy to hear that the 2021 edition is a go— taking place Sept. 17-19. “We’re planning to have the festival in 2021 so keep checking lifeisbeautiful.com and all our social media accounts for updates and announcements,” Nyman said.

Jean Georges Steakhouse

Despite the abundance of world-class restaurants in Las Vegas, you’re probably most excited to eat at In-N-Out Burger. They’re not only known for their pretty-good-for-fastfood burgers, but for their simplicity—you get a burger, fries, and a milkshake. You’re not going to rack your brain figuring out what to order. Head to a steakhouse on the Strip and it’s a different story. One look at the wine menu and your

head might explode. Yet, some restaurants realize their guests might desire a dining experience that’s simple and comprehensive of the menu. Thus, the prix fixe tasting menu—multiple courses, limited options, one fixed price. Dining this way makes life a little easier for you, quashing any pressure you might feel to curate the perfect meal for yourself, allowing you to sit back and enjoy everything coming your way.

Tom Colicchio’s Heritage Steak

Let’s start with a few tasting menus from chefs you might recognize from TV. Since Tom Colicchio’s Heritage Steak (866.339.4566) recently reopened at The Mirage, they’re welcoming back guests with a special three-course menu for $68. Entrées include filet mignon, roasted farm chicken, king salmon and the delicious

truffle burger served with fig ketchup. Pro tip: Complement your meal with the Heritage Manhattan, which is garnished with a hickory-smoked cherry. Down the street at Gordon Ramsay Steak (702.946.4663) inside Paris, chef Gordon Ramsay serves a five-course menu that is not only superb, but has everything you’d expect. You’ll get the Ramsay trinity of risotto, beef Wellington (with a side of butter poached lobster) and sticky toffee pudding. Hamachi crudo and a Scotch egg are also included. At $155, it’s a little pricey, but worth every penny. You may be less familiar with world-renowned chefs Michael Mina and Jean-Georges Vongerichten, but their tasting menus are not lacking in star power. At Mina’s StripSteak (702.632.7200) inside Manda-

lay Bay, the $60 three-course tasting starts with a little gem Caesar salad or tiger prawns, moves on to Scottish salmon, Mary’s brick chicken or a flat iron streak, and finishes with a decadent slice of cheesecake. Jean Georges Steakhouse (877.230.2742) at Aria offers a similar three-course tasting for $85, but ups the ante by offering their celebrated Japanese wagyu beef carpaccio as an appetizer. Pair that with Chilean sea bass or filet mignon and the warm Valrhona chocolate cake and you’ll leave satisfied. If you’re looking for more simplicity, Old Homestead Steakhouse (702.731.7560) at The Forum Shops at Caesars is about as straightforward as it gets. The $70 prix fixe menu (served daily from 4-6 p.m.) gives you a Caesar salad, 10-ounce Black Angus filet with colossal shrimp on the

side, and créme brulée. Top of the World Restaurant (702.380.7711) at The STRAT has more variety in their fourcourse tasting for $106 (or one dollar per floor), but is just as simple, serving up roasted corn soup, then ahi tuna or cavatelli pasta, filet mignon and shrimp or salmon and scallops, and créme brulée or spumoni. Add the wine pairing for an additional $50 and you’ll enjoy one of the best deals in Vegas.

The Future Is Now When choosing a new home, you’ve got to be smart—literally. Smart homes are a reality and no longer just something from the classic cartoon, The Jetsons. Toll Brothers’ division vice president of sales and customer experience Colleen McCullough notes, “I think people don’t realize the amount of impact that technology has had on the building industry.” She explains that because the homes being built today are so much farther along technologically, it makes sense to design a new home so you can customize it with your desired smart features, rather than pay to upgrade a resale home. –AD EXPERT LOOK

Meghan Jorgenson

The Space Race Indoor/outdoor living is one of the most noticeable design trends of the last decade, and it shows no signs of slowing down as builders and buyers seek to lose the walls between interior and exterior spaces. Realtor/ broker Tamara Heidel explains, “It’s so nice to be able to entertain indoors and outdoors so easily. Anybody buying a new home that doesn’t have a retractable wall is making a huge mistake.” –AD

Realtor Meghan Jorgenson has lived in Las Vegas for close to 25 years. She notes, “I know the city really well and it helps me find the right fit for my clients.” She’s used her insider knowledge to help clients find their ideal homes all over the Las Vegas Valley, and she encourages buyers to “Be open to new areas, because I feel like people just hear that Summerlin is a great place to live, and it is, but there are a lot of really great neighborhoods across the valley that could actually be a better fit for people.” Jorgenson points out how important it is to enter the home search with open minds, because “people come to the table with these super-long lists and they might miss a house because it doesn’t have one of the certain things they want.” She reminds her clients not to get hung up on cosmetic things because they’re less expensive to alter than they realize and can often be negotiated into the purchase price. Jorgenson brings up the excellent point that anybody looking to buy new construction should still use a Realtor. “We’re able to negotiate pricing and often get you a better lot premium price. We can help guide you through the process and it still doesn’t cost you anything extra.” –Allison Duck

required to submit their plan for reopening to the

Commission have been implemented, with every-

thing from casinos to guest rooms covered, so you

what’s been done to make your experience safer.

You may notice some guests (including yourself) headed straight to the elevators. That’s because contactless check-in is no longer a thing of the future. At MGM Resorts International properties, check in on your phone when you get close to the resort, and you’ll be able to pay and get a digital key. You can also check in with a contactless option on a kiosk and a more traditional front-desk option. Caesars Entertainment has rearranged front-desk areas and lines to accommodate social distancing, and provides hand sanitizer. Some hotels also have plexiglass installed at the front desk.

Hand sanitizer, everywhere! Every hotel that reopens is required to have stations for hand sanitizing throughout. MGM Resorts’ properties even offer new handwashing stations. You’ll notice that many employees are masked and, if their job requires it, gloved. This goes for those employees you see and those who labor behind the scenes, in restaurants, loading docks and other areas. Those employees undergo a health self-screening daily and most are also screened for temperature.

There may be a line, as guests are being asked to maintain adequate spacing between groups and to try to ride with their own party, or ride with fewer people. Employees often clean and sanitize the buttons and commonly touched areas inside the cars, and clean escalator rails.

Feel good in knowing your room has been thoroughly sanitized. Surfaces have been wiped down; and linens and towels completely changed out. You’ll probably find extra towels in your room, and can always request more if needed. You may not find little bottles of amenities but amenities are still available. Housekeeping and other guest services may not be entering your room unless requested, and at some hotels, won’t be entering during your stay.

Many venues have plexiglass at payment stations, and marks to encourage social distancing while waiting. In addition, fewer patrons may be allowed in at one time.

LAS LAS VEGAS VEGAS MAGAZINE MAGAZINE 9.27.20 6.14.20 .35. .9.

OK! It’s time to release a little tension, and maybe win a few bucks. Go grab some cash, and head to the floor. While you’re here, you’ll see a variety of measures being taken to increase social distancing, such as slot machines not being available right next to each other, congregating behind each other not allowed, a limited number of players at the tables and plexiglass partitions between dealers and players. You may be asked to step away from the game if you remove your mask to smoke. Casinos are required to have a plan to disinfect all the items needed to play, such as chips, cards, balls and dice.

There is a limit to the number of people allowed in the area and there is space between each party to encourage social distancing. Each area is sanitized between each party.

Most restaurants require reservations, although not all. Many will text or call when your table is ready, saving you the hassle of waiting in line. You’re required to wear your face mask until you reach your table. It may feel much more intimate, as tables have 6 feet between them and the number of customers is fewer. Menus may be digital or one-time use paper menus. At some restaurants, permanent menus are sanitized between each use. Condiments won’t simply be stored on the table, and are sanitized between customers. Bars will also be spacing patrons’ parties 6 feet apart.

Although the number of attractions in Vegas isn’t as high as a few months ago, sanitation is still high on those that are open, and social distancing is easily seen. For instance, on New York-New York’s Roller Coaster, cars are loaded with the same party, and alternate cars will be empty.

One of the best ways is to check-out on the TV in your room, and hotels have been using this option for many years now. Look at your bill, OK it if all is correct, and get a copy emailed to you. If you have a physical key, most hotels will allow you to leave it in the room. Some hotels have check-out kiosks that are sanitized often.

While you’re here in Las Vegas, there are several things you can do to help keep yourself well and decrease the chances of you or someone else getting sick. Give yourself a self-check before you arrive. Do you have a fever? A cough? Is your sense of smell normal? You must now wear your mask in public areas, including the casino. It helps stem the spread of potentially deadly viruses like

COVID-19. It’s also considerate of fellow guests and resort workers.

holding escalator rails or getting money from the ATM).

You’ll notice hand sanitizer stations. Give yourself a squirt before and after playing slots or the tables, and anywhere it seems you might need it (after touching elevator buttons,

6 feet from people other than your travel companions whenever possible. Common places that lines form will often be marked, making this easy. Be patient—even though you are 6 feet apart, you’ll still be moving.

Practice social distancing. Stay

Try not to touch your face.

Periodically, wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water, then rinse for 10 seconds. You may receive personal size bottles of hand sanitizer in your room. Take those with you and use whenever it’s not practical to wash, or a hand sanitizer station isn’t close.

Name Game Smith & Wollensky (Grand Canal Shoppes, 702.637.1515) are two names synonymous with a great steakhouse. And they were picked randomly from a phone book. True story! And, in 1977, a N.Y. steakhouse was born, one offering the best in USDA Prime beef, rich and marbled and sourced from small family ranches with grain-fed, humanely raised cattle. Start your Vegas dining experience in the tavern-like lounge on the first floor and order an end-to-summertime cocktail like the Strawberry Sipper with Sobieski vodka, fresh strawberries, pink peppercorn syrup and club soda. Move up to the second floor for dinner. Classic cuts include bone-in ribeye, bone-in New York cut, boneless New York Strip and filet mignon. Star entreés fall under chef’s recommendations like the coffee- and cocoa-rubbed 10-ounce filet with ancho chili butter and onions, the Cajun bleu stacked filet medallions with bleu cheese and confit bacon and the 10-ounce filet Oscar with jumbo lump crab meat, asparagus and Hollandaise. –Kiko Miyasato
