RESORTS RAMP UP SECURITY ON THE STRIP

FINAL SALE UNDERWAY AT AMBER UNICORN BOOKS After serving as a hub for Las Vegas’ literary community for 39 years, Amber Unicorn Books (2101 S. Decatur Blvd., #14) will shutter at the end of November. “It’s sad,” owner Myrna Donato says. “I feel like I’m abandoning all my loyal customers, but they all understand.” Her store has struggled financially since neighboring Trader Joe’s vacated its shopping center in 2016. The following year, Donato’s husband, Lou, died. Then COVID-19 hit. At age 81, Donato says it’s “time to go home and play with my dogs.” Amber Unicorn is particularly known for its extensive cookbook collection, and during the closing sale, the store will open its cookbook annex to the public for the first time. “I read cookbooks like other people read novels,” Donato says. “It’s become a specialty of mine.” Donato estimates that she has 26,000 cookbooks in the store and another 10,000 at home. Leading up to the closure, Amber Unicorn is running a final sale, with fiction paperbacks going for $2 and the rest of its book inventory discounted by 30%. Remaining books will also be available for purchase online at bit.ly/3kk4boj. For now, Donato plans to remain open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. “It’s a bittersweet end of an era—not being able to see my customers every day, having to say goodbye to each and every one of them,” Donato says. “It’s going to be a little bit on the traumatic side.” –C. SOME MGM RESORTS SHOWS TO RETURN NOVEMBER 6

MGM Resorts announced October 20 that several shows and entertainment offerings at three Strip resorts will be back November 6: David Copperfield, Jabbawockeez and Brad Garrett’s Comedy Club at MGM Grand; Thunder From Down Under and The Australian Bee Gees Show at Excalibur; and Carrot Top and Fantasy at Luxor. All shows will hold a maximum audience of 250 people with six feet of distance between parties and a 25-foot separation between audience and stage. Some events have been moved to new venues to accommodate safety guidelines. More information and tickets can be found at mgmresorts.com. The first Strip casino show to return to live performances is X Country, reopening October 22 at Harrah’s Las Vegas. –Brock Radke

Debra Patel was in it for the long haul on October 17 as early voting opened in Nevada. Patel was one of hundreds of people lined up at the voting site outside the Galleria at Sunset mall in Henderson. She arrived at 9 a.m., just as the polls opened, but the first voters got there as early as 4 a.m. The line stretched hundreds of yards, snaking through the mall parking lot and coiling in on itself. “I’ll be here 10 hours if I have to,” said Patel, a supporter of Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden. Patel said she was voting in person because she has concerns about mail-in ballots and wanted to make sure her vote was counted. Because of concerns about the coronavirus, state lawmakers passed a bill this year to send mail-in ballots to all registered voters. Natalie Tefft, a Trump supporter at the Galleria voting site, said voting early was the easiest option for her with her work schedule. She also expressed concern about mail-in ballots, saying she wanted to use the voting machines to make sure her vote is counted. Early voting continues through October 30, while mail-in ballots must be postmarked by Election Day, November 3. –John Sadler

1 THINGS THAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK

BIG MAIL-IN NUMBERS Nearly 176,000 Nevada voters returned ballots mailed to them this month, election officials reported October 19. In 2016, fewer than 79,000 voters cast ballots absentee or in all-mail precincts. About 108,000 Democrats, 64,000 Republicans and 49,000 voters not registered with either party have voted.

As an added layer of security after multiple recent shootings and fights on the Strip, Wynn Resorts this month started requiring patrons to go through metal detectors before entering the property. Additionally, hand-carried bags are checked. Since early- to mid-September, there have been repeated violent acts on the Strip, including a shooting October 19 near Planet Hollywood. Wynn’s enhanced security measures include increasing the number of security personnel—many of whom are former federal or local law enforcement—and employing more uniformed Metro Police officers. Other properties have taken similar action. The Cosmopolitan partnered with Metro starting two weeks ago to station officers at every entrance and assist with resort security. Metro has investigated at least eight shootings on the Strip since September 20, most of which have started as fights. Eight people have been wounded, though none fatally, while at least 11 arrests have been made. –Bryan Horwath

2 FIRST FEMALE NHP LEADER Anne Carpenter on October 19 became the first woman to assume command of Nevada Highway Patrol, where she will oversee about 600 employees, including 491 sworn officers. She began her career as a Department of Public Safety officer in 1995.

Visitors can access all open areas and visit the Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge plaza and walkway. The visitor center will remain closed, with no tours or exhibits available.

5 VIRUS OUTBREAK IN VEGAS JAIL A coronavirus outbreak hit the Las Vegas city jail October 16, with 43 out of 91 inmates in one unit testing positive, officials said. The jail, which overall averages about 500 inmates each day, had only 12 positive tests before the recent outbreak.

FAST FORWARD CIRCA PAYS TRIBUTE TO VEGAS’ PAST WHILE SIGNALING ITS BRIGHT FUTURE BY BROCK RADKE

W e’re nearing the end of what was supposed to be a huge year for Las Vegas, before the pandemic deeply affected the major development projects scheduled to arrive here in 2020. Allegiant Stadium was completed on time but cannot host sellout crowds of 65,000 for football games, while casino-hotel projects Virgin Las Vegas and Resorts World pushed their opening dates to 2021. But even as Las Vegas slowed down, one key undertaking actually sped up. When it was announced in January 2019, Circa Resort & Casino—a 777-room hotel with multilevel casino, sportsbook and pool spaces—was set to open in

December 2020 at the Downtown site where the Las Vegas Club once stood. But this past June, shortly after Nevada casinos were permitted to reopen following the coronavirus shutdown, CEO and developer Derek Stevens announced the property would open early, debuting its first five floors on October 28. “Everybody was really trying to deal with a lot of different information sets at the time,” Stevens tells the Weekly. “Allegiant construction was ongoing, Resorts World was ongoing, the Las Vegas Convention Center was ongoing, and everyone was just trying to evaluate what was transpiring and trying to stay ahead of the curve as far as information and safety. For us it was a week-byweek type of thing for a while. We were just glad to move forward.” The Circa team hunkered down with general contractor McCarthy Building Companies and Tré Builders and came up with a new plan to accelerate development by focusing on Circa’s podium—the casino, sportsbook, restaurants, rooftop Stadium Swim pool complex and Garage

Mahal parking hub. The 35-story hotel tower, a striking new monument along the Fremont Street skyline, is slated to open in December. The early arrival is emblematic of the philosophy Stevens has demonstrated since he moved to Las Vegas from Michigan in 2006 and acquired a stake in the Golden Gate, along with his brother Greg. Circa is not only the culmination of what Stevens has learned and accomplished in 14 years at the Golden Gate, the D and the Downtown Las Vegas Events Center, it’s the physical embodiment of what he loves most about Las Vegas. “[Circa] embraces the history of Las Vegas and the history of casinos, while moving away from the current model. I think that’s what is most interesting to me,” says Vegas author and historian David G. Schwartz. “It’s capturing that spirit of [classic Vegas], but it’s not trying to imitate any one thing.” When Circa was announced last year at the Events Center, local officials and observers hailed the (Continued on Page 15)

concept for its celebration of vintage Vegas vibes and respectful tribute to the gaming industry pioneers who created the framework of the ubiquitous Vegas experience. It’s the first brand-new resort in the Downtown area in 40 years and the first groundup casino resort anywhere in the Valley since the short-lived Lucky Dragon opened in 2016. But while it might be closely connected with Vegas’ past, it has also emerged as an emblem of the city’s immediate future. And Circa’s opening next week should place Stevens among the pantheon of Vegas visionaries. “Everything he’s done since he arrived in Las Vegas has been preparing for this,” says Schwartz, who has written extensively about the gaming industry in Las Vegas and Atlantic City and authored a book about Caesars Palace and Circus Circus creator Jay Sarno.

“We’ve seen [Stevens] progressively get more involved. When he first came to Fremont Street, I don’t think there were other casinos with bars outside, and now that’s the norm. Other properties have adopted those [ideas], and that shows how people can really change the model.”

“[Circa] embraces the history of Las Vegas and the history of casinos, while moving away from the current model. That’s what is most interesting to me.” –Vegas author and historian David G. Schwartz

* * * * * It shouldn’t take long for visitors to understand Stevens’ vision once they set foot inside Circa. The energetic casino space feels familiar and modern, and its newness will inspire comparisons to the Cosmopolitan on the Strip and Red Rock Resort in Summerlin. In scale and design, there’s nothing like it Downtown. The Mega Bar stretches almost the length of the casino’s first level on the south end, and at 165 feet, it bests the D’s Longbar as the longest bartop in the city. On the opposite end, the lobby-

area Vegas Vickie’s bar sets a thoughtful tone for the entire Circa experience, built around the iconic, 25-foot-tall kicking cowgirl herself, restored to full beautiful brightness by YESCO. Circa breaks the mold of multilevel Vegas casinos. Other venues typically create promenade experiences on upper floors with restaurants, retail and attractions. Circa’s second floor houses a 4,575-squarefoot signature retail store and the Saginaw’s Delicatessen, Victory

Burger and 8 East restaurants (see page 30), but it also maintains high energy with a significant gaming floor and the Overhang Bar looking into the spectacular three-story, 1,000-person capacity sportsbook (see page 32). And the secluded lower level beneath Vegas Vickie’s is built out for Barry’s Downtown Prime, a time machine steakhouse that must be seen to be believed. “One of the things I found most interesting is Garage Mahal … because it seems like it’s approaching transportation in a totally different way,” Schwartz says of the nine-level structure connected to the casino by a bridge across Main Street. “The ride-sharing [element] is built in from the start, which seems very forward-thinking and could make it a hub for all of Downtown. You also have to look at the sportsbook as a dominant feature in a time when legal sports betting has expanded (Continued on Page 16)

rapidly across the U.S. People are coming to Las Vegas looking for this.” The book and the bars built around the sports-viewing experience help make Circa of-the-moment, and the same can be said for Stadium Swim, which boasts massive video screens along with a flexible layout for special events and multipurpose programming. “The idea for Stadium Swim has been with us for a long time, and it’s really come around,” Stevens says. “The elements for it have been on my mind for quite a while. It’s just about a destination that blends great Las Vegas sunshine with some water and some swimming and having a few drinks with some sports on or some background music playing. “There’s just something about being outside that’s pretty special in Vegas, and maybe it’s because I grew up in Detroit where … you get to November and don’t see the sun until the end of March. There’s an awful lot of people in the northern states or in Canada who are going to love coming to Stadium Swim.” If that venue gets utilized as a dayclub, it would be able to host the biggest pool party in Las Vegas—a capacity of more than 4,000. But it has also been designed to attract a more general audience, incorporating sports and music into a welcoming party for visitors from all over. Stevens knows his audience well and stays connected to the gamblers and guests who frequent the Golden Gate and the D. That connection also powered the confident move to open Circa as the city’s first adults-only casino resort, another unique announcement that landed over the summer. “I thought the feedback on that would be positive, but it’s been overwhelmingly positive, stronger than what I anticipated,” he says. “There are a couple elements to this. I think when you have people out and about in a casino, they

project, and it’s down to the last couple of weeks and it’s all coming together. There is some excitement and some stress and adrenaline.” Indeed, adapting to the early opening date and operational adjustments for pandemic circumstances have been challenging for the Circa team, and there are sure to be more hurdles ahead. But it’s hard to ignore the positivity that surrounds a major development project coming to life in the current era, and it’s impossible to diminish the excitement that always surrounds a shiny Vegas casino-resort. It’s a perpetually historic event. “To have all this happen in the last year with the pandemic [has] made it pretty interesting [to see] how we’re able to finish it out,” Stevens says. “I’m very, very proud that Circa can happen in October 2020, because it’s going to be bringing 1,500 new jobs at a point when Las Vegas needs jobs. I guess that’s something I feel special about. It’s coming at the right time for everybody.”

PERSONAL PARADISE Advice for creating a backyard or patio oasis BY C. MOON REED

S

ure, you live in the Mojave Desert, one of the driest places in the world. But that doesn’t mean you can’t turn your backyard or patio into a garden paradise. Norm Shilling, president of Schilling Horticulture and co-host of KNPR’s Desert Bloom radio show, says creating a desert oasis is absolutely worth the effort. “Home is sanctuary,” Schilling says. “We spend a lot of our time and effort creating a beautiful home environment that’s just right for us. The landscape—your outdoor living space— is an extension of that.” Schilling describes his own half-acre yard as a “botanical garden” that hosts approximately 400 species of plants, provides shade, nurtures wildlife (birds, lizards and butterflies) and always has something in bloom. “My garden pulls me into it,” Schilling says. “That’s what a garden should do. It should be a space that you want to be in.” Don’t let an expert’s garden intimidate you, though. Even the pros have learned from hard experience: “If you were to come to my garden, you would look at it and you say, ‘Oh, my God, this is so beautiful.’ But what you wouldn’t see are all the plants that have already died,” Schilling says. “Failure is part of the gardening experience.” He advises celebrating success and learning from failures. Like many desert transplants, Schilling didn’t always appreciate its stark beauty. He moved from Southern Ontario, Canada, to Southern Nevada at age 10 and hated it. “I got here and thought it was the ugliest place I could possibly imagine,” Schilling says. But by young adulthood, Schilling learned to love the geography of his adopted home. “It’s so harsh and at the same time it’s so delicate,” Schilling says. “At first glance it seems so barren, but it is just packed and full of life.”

WHAT IF?

Fruit trees most likely to thrive in Southern Nevada are pomegranate, fig and citrus.

WHAT ABOUT GRASSY LAWNS? If you plan to actually use a lawn—say you have children or pets who will physically play on it—then Schilling says that grass makes sense. On the other hand, if you just want to look at something pretty, decorating with desert plants is an easier, more environmentally friendly option.

“The key to gardening success is to put a plant where it wants to be, give it room to grow and then drink wine.” –Norm Schilling

CREATE YOUR OASIS ■ Step 1: Brainstorm. Think about what you want from your space. A children’s playground? A shady place to relax? Home-grown vegetables? Fruit trees? Or just some pretty eye candy? Do research and make a budget. If you have the resources, enlist expert help. Or just go it alone. No matter the scope, you’ll be improving your space and having fun.

■ Step 2: Lay it out. As with many things in life, a little advanced planning can save you time and money. Schilling recommends grouping your plants by their water needs. Thirsty plants (like fruit trees and lawns) go together, and arid plants go together. Place shade-loving plants where they will get shade and sun-loving plants in the sun. When considering

where to plant, remember to leave space for plants to grow to their full size. Don’t lay them out for the size they are today. You’ll also want to plan out any irrigation or watering systems. ■ Step 3: Start planting. Schilling recommends starting with young, small plants. They tend to establish themselves more quickly and make for the best investments.

■ You’re on a tight budget. Buy young, desert-loving plants and give them space to grow. ■ You’re short on space. If you only have an apartment patio, you can still grow a lovely garden using containers. ■ You want to block out your neighbors. Don’t plant a tree that’s going to grow so big it destroys the wall. Plant a bush or small tree that will only reach 10-15 feet of height/ spread at maturity. ■ You’ve got weeds. Don’t ruin your day by trying to pick your weeds all at once. Schilling advises only weeding for five to 10 minutes at a time and focusing on pulling weeds before they flower and reproduce. ■ You like flowers. Plant cactus. Seriously. “The most beautiful flowers in my garden are the cactus blooms,” Schilling says. “The petals are translucent, so light flows through.” Schilling recommends a cactus with brilliant, multicolored flowers called the Flying Saucer (Latin name: Trichocereus hybrid). Schilling says the blooms are “so big that you can literally put your face in it and be a bee. And if it’s backlit, you are in this gorgeous, glowing universe.” ■ You’re looking for big impact. Go vertical. Add different levels to your garden, whether that means raising a garden bed by a foot or putting a container on a plant stand. Displaying plants at a variety of heights creates visual interest. THE BENEFITS OF DESERT PLANTS ■ Easy. They’re suited to our environment, which means they require little water and are generally low maintenance. ■ Enduring. They tend to have a much longer blooming season, Schilling says, with some plants flowering in the middle of summer or winter. ■ Beautiful. “They often have really rich colors of foliage—blues and golds and purples. They also have really amazing, bold textures, especially when you get into cacti and succulents,” Schilling says.

CLOWN MOTEL (TONOPAH)

SOUTHERN NEVADA’S SURPRISING AUTUMN ADVENTURES

Few images conjure fear like a remote desert motel filled with creepy clown figurines. Add a well-known haunting on the property and an actual cemetery next door, and you have all the elements of a truly chilling evening.

THE MIZPAH HOTEL (TONOPAH) Renovated in recent years, the Old West style remains in this pioneer hotel—as does the Lady in Red, the Mizpah Hotel’s resident ghostly dweller.

+

Nevadans are blessed with a home state like no other— from natural wonders to man-made marvels, there are few places more special to call home. It’s rich in history and ripe for adventure, and with Nevada Day quickly approaching, there is no better time to get out and explore some of our state’s wilder locales. Here is a list of fun and surprising fall adventures in Southern Nevada that may not be on your radar—yet.

HAUNTED HOTELS AND GHOST TOWNS Whether you’re an aspiring ghost hunter, a skeptic of the paranormal, or just looking for an eerie experience to set the Halloween mood, check out these notoriously haunted locations.

GOODSPRINGS GHOST TOWN AND THE PIONEER SALOON Just 45 minutes from the Strip, the Pioneer Saloon is the oldest bar in Southern Nevada and is swathed in folklore. Enjoy a self-guided walking tour around the town before settling down at the Pioneer Saloon, where you can grab a burger (and maybe catch a ghostly apparition).

THE OVERLAND HOTEL & SALOON (PIOCHE) When you think of the Wild West, Pioche may not come to mind, but it should—in the 1870s, the small mining town was the location of so many shootouts, it reported 60% of all murders in the state. Today, the Overland Hotel & Saloon is the location of several themed suites, including a few rumored to be haunted—rooms 8, 10 and 15 have been the sites of several unexplained events. For more hauntings in Pioche, be sure to visit the Boot Hill Cemetery.

RHYOLITE GHOST TOWN While Rhyolite isn’t known for being haunted, it may well be the most insta-worthy ghost town on the list. Don’t miss the Goldwell Open Air Museum in Beatty, an eight-acre sculpture park.

MAKE A TRIP OUT OF IT For a fun and possibly ghoulish getaway, start your weekend at the Tonopah Historic Mining Park for a glimpse of Nevada’s past. The Central Nevada Museum is a great stop nearby. From there, settle in for the evening at the Mizpah Hotel to see the Lady in Red and for a chance to write about your sightings in the guest journal, which catalogues experiences with the spirits. Spend the next morning at the Crescent Sand Dunes or one of many nearby hikes and spend your evening at the Stargazing Park before settling in at the Clown Motel.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURES Surrounded by world-class national parks, Southern Nevadans are spoiled with our outdoor recreation options. While we trust you’re familiar with the big names, here are a few state parks off the beaten path that you have to see to believe.

CATHEDRAL GORGE (CALIENTE/PIOCHE) The stunning views and experience of Cathedral Gorge State Park can only be found in Nevada. Thousands of years of geological activity have left the area with a labyrinth of seemingly never-ending slot canyons. Put this trip on your bucket list—there’s nothing quite like it.

KERSHAW-RYAN (CALIENTE) This lush, forest-like canyon offers beautiful and easy hikes. It’s also a great area to take kids.

BEAVER DAM (CALIENTE) For a true getaway, Beaver Dam is one of the Silver State’s most remote and quiet spots. With canyons, streams, waterfalls, forests and incredible trout fishing, this state park is a hidden gem.

FAMILY FUN TECHATTICUP MINE (NELSON) Located in the scenic Eldorado Canyon, the Techatticup Mine is Southern Nevada’s oldest gold mine. It’s as picturesque as it is a fascinating glimpse into some of Nevada’s earliest mining days.

BLACK CANYON WATER TRAIL/COLORADO RIVER (ACCESS VIA BOULDER CITY) There are several guided tours for this 30-mile stretch of the Colorado River, as well as the option for solo exploration. Bring or rent a kayak and hit the water. Along the way you’ll find beautiful beaches, pristine caves, hot springs, wildlife and more.

MAKE A TRIP OUT OF IT Head to Boulder City for a river trip down the Colorado, accessed via the Lake Mead Recreational Area. After, check into the Boulder Dam Hotel, a beautiful, classic hotel with some ghost stories of its own. The next day, hit the Techatticup Mine Tour or head out to Laughlin for more watersports. Be sure to stop at Chilly Jilly’z on your way out of Boulder City for one of the best Dole whips you’ve ever had. Photos courtesy of Travel Nevada/Photo illustration

Rapper Nevos Tyler’s music reflects family legacy and his own quirky personality BY LESLIE VENTURA

VEGAS’ CREATIVE TYLER

(Valor Perry/Courtesy)

F

riedrich Nietzsche and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood might not be regular hip-hop talking points, but topics like those are front and center in rapper Nevos Tyler’s lyrics. Whether he’s talking about philosophy or anime, there’s a duality that exists within the MC, distinct ideas that come together to form Tyler’s unique and charismatic identity. “When it comes to my music, I like to [take] the parts of me that I don’t get to express on a daily basis,” Tyler says, whether that’s his selfdescribed nerdy side or his introspective, thoughtful one. Just take one look at his pixelated, millennial pink website or his Instagram posts full of Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh! references and, well, you’ll understand. “In a song I can express a full thought and have it transfer to the listener in the way I want it to,” he says. “It’s just a reflection of me in the truest form.” Originally from Chicago, Tyler moved to Las Vegas two years ago after graduating from Virginia Commonwealth University, where he studied criminal justice. After a friend told him about the Vegas art scene, Tyler decided to take the plunge. “He was telling me a lot about the scene and how dope it was, and that got me in my creative flow,” Tyler says. “So I decided to move out here with him and build my music career out here.” So far, he says, Las Vegas has lived up to his expectations. “I’ve done a lot of open mics [and] shows, and met a lot of great people out here,” Tyler says. “The people are just great artists and make a great community.” Due to the unexpected COVID-19 pandemic, Tyler says he’s focusing on his online presence. “I was planning on doing more shows, but because I couldn’t do that, I had to figure out another way to build myself up, and online was the only other option,” he explains. Tyler credits his father Oz (also born Nevos Tyler), one of the original members of the Chi-Rock Nation, as one of his first inspirations. Formed on Chicago’s South Side in 1985, that group is credited with releasing that city’s first-ever hip-hop record. “I moved from Chicago when I was about 13,” Tyler says. “I wasn’t really into music back then … but I grew up surrounded by Chicago music and is very much influenced by my dad’s music.” Now, Tyler is part of his own hip-hop crew, the Sad Art Collective, a group of “musicians mostly in Vegas but all over the U.S.,” according to Tyler. “We all just make our own type of music. None of it sounds the same.” Tyler recently released two singles, a track about Japanese culture and anime called “Weaboo Sh*t” and a chill cut called “Flow,” both of which he’s preparing to debut live. “I’m so excited to perform again,” Tyler says. He’s currently working on a new single about police brutality, due in November. “Once I get back onstage, I have so many songs [to share]. That’s a dream of mine right now.”

f a group of archaeologists stumbled onto your belongings 1,000 years from now, what exactly would they find? What stories would those items tell, and where would you want those objects to end up? Now imagine your most prized possessions sitting behind glass in an art museum. Those are just a few thoughts evoked by the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art exhibit Future Relics: Artifacts for a New World, a show curated by the Gulch Collective. The exhibit is the collective’s first Las Vegas show since coming together in 2013. “The group was formed back in the day really to have an intersectional collective of artists support different projects,” says Gulch member and artist Justin Favela, host of The Art People Podcast and co-host of the Latinos Who Lunch podcast. “We stayed in touch, but we regrouped and reassembled the Megazord in 2020 and added Quindo Miller and Lance Smith.” Today, Gulch consists of Las Vegas-based artists Krystal Ramirez, Mikayla Whitmore, Jennifer Kleven, Smith, Miller and Favela. “All of us have longstanding ties and commitments to Las Vegas,” Whitmore tells the Weekly. “A lot of us are born and raised out here … and were just tired of watching our

Cesar Piedra’s “Pinche Xoloescuincle”

city being taken apart piece by piece.” “We have so many individual ideas,” Miller adds. “We challenge each other to think in different ways.” For Future Relics, Favela says, each Gulch member chose an artist, then was given the opportunity to look at the Barrick’s private collection of pre-Columbian artifacts before creating their own work for the show. “A lot of museums have been reckoning with their collections and how most of their pre-Columbian artifacts or Native American artifacts were mostly stolen, grave-robbed or bought as a collection as tchotchkes,” Favela says. “When I brought it to Gulch, we said, ‘This is the perfect opportunity for us to curate a fun show, but also have it be an institutional critique.’ Yes, [we’re] being critical of the museum collection, but [we’re also] in conversation with the museum.” “We are trying to share a set of ideas and beliefs with this collective,” Ramirez says, adding that it was important to showcase other peoples’ work, especially burgeoning local artists who have never shown at a museum before. “When I was going to art school, I never thought I would show at a museum,” says Favela, whose work has been featured in group exhibitions around

the world and solo shows across the country. “Once it happened, I realized this is something attainable. I really do hope that some of these artists who have never showed at a museum [before] will be encouraged after having this show under their belt. Sometimes, just being an artist and seeing your work in a space really opens up a whole world.” Future Relics will continue to evolve when the Gulch Collective invites a second round of artists to respond for “phase two” of the show in January. A third phase will follow in 2021, allowing even more artists to engage in the conversation, not just with the Barrick’s collection but with the other artists themselves. “Many times, mundane items become deified objects,” Smith says. “What makes an ‘artifact?’ What makes a talisman, and why do they get to be behind glass?” “A lot of these relics and artifacts that museums collect are really just everyday items … so I think that was part of the prompt,” Ramirez says. “What is a future relic to you? What is

special to you that others might not find special?” “Or what isn’t special to you,” Miller asks, “but other people deem important?” The evolutionary scope of Relics helps separate it from more traditional exhibits, Whitmore says. Also helping do that: All of these artists created new work during a pandemic. “They’re working with what they have, within their circumstances,” Miller says. In addition to curating the next phases of Future Relics, Gulch is working on its “first active art project between the six of us,” according to Whitmore, for a December Nevada Humanities show titled New Monuments. In the meantime, the community is invited to engage with the dialogue happening inside the Barrick. “The museum is making some beautiful strides by saying, ‘We got a whole bunch of stolen sh*t—let’s send it back to the people it belongs to,” Smith says. “That is powerful.”

CUISINE A LA CIRCA Barry’s Downtown Prime leads the new resort’s impressive opening lineup BY BROCK RADKE

I

f you want to create the next generation of swanky steakhouse in Las Vegas, there’s really only one guy to call. Barry Dakake came to town in 1998 to open Aureole at Mandalay Bay and Charlie Palmer Steak at the Four Seasons before the Maloof family installed him in the kitchen at N9NE at the Palms, the undisputed champion of scene-y steakhouses. When Station Casinos remade the Palms and transformed N9NE into Scotch 80 Prime, Dakake stayed on to supervise the evolution. And now, as Derek Stevens debuts the dreamy new Circa casino resort on the corner of Main and Fremont streets, Dakake is back on duty with Barry’s Downtown Prime. “I was in the Caribbean when I found out about this project. It feels like it’s happening so fast,” the Rhode Island-born chef says. “It’s definitely going to be the coolest spot to go. But I’ve always had great teams surrounding me, great cooks and sous chefs. At N9NE we were a family, and we’re going to be re-creating parts of that in this new place.” Created by Dakake with his Make It Happen Hospitality partners Yassine Lyoubi, Marco Cicione and Donnie Rihn, Barry’s Downtown Prime promises to be one of the most glamorous Las Vegas restaurants in recent memory, situated in Circa’s

secluded bottom floor and accessible through an elevator entrance directly beneath the restored Vegas Vickie neon sign. The Make It Happen team was heavily involved in the restaurant’s design, which takes inspiration from classic Vegas hot spots while adding modern flexibility for private group dinners and events in a multitude of dining rooms. “No other restaurant has what we have. We’re really making it a destination,” Dakake says. “We took

all the old-school names in Vegas hospitality and put them on these rooms, from the Pioneer Club to the Sultan’s Table to the Fremont Room or the Sabre Room. And I’m doing the same food I’ve been doing from when I was young, keeping those standards high.” Expect tableside preparations at Barry’s, and not just setting fire to a pan of bananas foster. The staff will be cooking certain dishes from start to finish right in front of your eyes while also bringing the best of classic steakhouse cuisine, from tomahawk ribeyes and Steak Diane to chilled shellfish platters and Baked Alaska. Here are the other restaurants opening at Circa on October 28: ■ 8 EAST Dan Coughlin, creator of Downtown’s beloved Le Thai, is behind this new concept inspired by metropolitan Asian food markets. It was recently announced that 8 East would open October 28 instead of in December, and the change adds some serious range to Circa’s food lineup, with Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Korean and Thai dishes on the menu.

■ SAGINAW’S DELICATESSEN Paul Saginaw, one of the founders of the legendary Zingerman’s Deli in Mich-

igan, was coaxed to Las Vegas to open this premier deli destination. It’ll be all about the Reuben at Saginaw’s, which will serve sandwich favorites alongside matzo ball soup, latkes, chopped liver and breakfast specialties. ■ PROJECT BBQ The local food truck of the same name from chef Rex Bernales has been dishing up pulled pork, brisket and chicken in front of the Circa construction site for months. The permanent eatery will also be situated under the Fremont Street Experience, creating a backyard-style barbecue experience. ■ VICTORY BURGER & WINGS CO. Derek Stevens brought American Coney Island’s famous hot dogs to the D, and now he’s tasked that restaurant’s founding family with this sports bar concept—starring halfpound burgers and crispy chicken wings—to feed the masses at Circa’s massive sportsbook. Expect a serious draft beer lineup to wash it all down.

READY TO LAUNCH

The Circa sportsbook is as mind-blowing as advertised

BY CASE KEEFER

T

hey say it can take up to 10 people to operate the three-story, high-definition screen at the front of the Circa sportsbook, but Derek Stevens is determined to figure it out on his own. As soon as the infrastructure was in place ahead of the book’s grand opening, the resort’s owner wanted a tutorial on the controls. Turns out, they were as difficult as advertised. “It’s a little bit different than my DirecTV remote control at home,” Stevens jokes. “This thing is like frickin’ NASA.” Anyone visiting what’s being billed as the largest sportsbook in the world will surely agree—many sci-fi film

command centers don’t look as opulent as Stevens’ new venue. The 78 million-pixel screen, which reportedly cost more than $20 million, beams across nearly the entire casino floor, dazzling those who approach with its clarity and contrast. It can play as many as 24 sporting events at a time, though it will generally show fewer, depending on the schedule of a given night. Patrons will be able to see every game on the screen—without squinting to make out the score or zooming in on ant-sized players, as in typical sportsbooks. Those sitting in one of 1,000 seats laid out in front of the screen will be

able to watch with clarity. That was critical to Stevens, one of many details over which he pored starting in 2015, when he purchased Las Vegas Club and began dreaming about building his own sportsbook. “For years, I’ve been hearing from Derek about what it was going to be and I’d seen renderings,” says Matt Metcalf, Circa’s race and sportsbook director. “But I don’t think you can ever fully appreciate it until you walk in the door and see it for the first time.” Metcalf and his team of bookmakers have already changed the local betting scene over the past year and a half with

satellite Circa sportsbook locations at the Golden Gate and the D, two other Stevens properties. Circa has drawn praise from gamblers for offering high limits, taking a low hold percentage on future wagers and refusing to turn away any customers. Now, Circa aims to revolutionize the game-day experience in Las Vegas, with Stevens hoping his personal touches make a difference. He has handpicked all seating—testing out a variety of chairs and booths at his warehouse over the past few years— and settled for nothing less than the highest quality audio equipment to pair with the screen.

“We’ve gotten a lot of people down to the [Golden] Gate and to the D based on the product and what we built with that,” Metcalf says. “But I think this room will get a lot of people down here in its own right. And from then on, it’s on us to show them what we’re about, what we’ve built and keep them as Circa customers.” Demand is high, so Circa has implemented a select-a-seat style reservation system for the sportsbook on its website. Prices range from $8 for a single stadium seat to $700 for a full Circa Club booth, fees that count toward food and beverage minimums. Food can be ordered to the book—via provided iPads—from several of the resort’s restaurants, including Victory Burger Co.,

Project BBQ and Saginaw’s Delicatessen. Seats are equipped with power outlets, and Stevens has ensured the WiFi connection and cell signal are strong from front to back. He’s been in enough sportsbooks over the years to know the feeling when something goes technologically awry. For that reason, he might want to stay away from the screen’s programming board during peak hours. “That’s probably the most intimidating part,” Metcalf says, laughing. “Even when we took over the Golden Gate, it was just so much equipment to learn. That was a big deal and a learning experience. It was a training ground for how we’re going to run this book.”

single-game performance by any team thus far this season—a 38-10 victory over previously undefeated Green Bay—according to Football Outsiders’ DVOA ratings. The Buccaneers are now the No. 2 favorite to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl, behind the Seattle Seahawks. Six-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady hasn’t looked totally comfortable with his new team yet, but it hasn’t mattered given the amount of talent everywhere else on the roster. Injury report: The Raiders got defensive tackle Maurice Hurst back from the COVID-19 list, but added right tackle Trent Brown (who had just returned from a calf injury) and cornerback Damon Arnette (who recently underwent thumb surgery) to the COVID-19 list. Early indications are that defensive tackle Maliek Collins will be ready to play Sunday after missing the game in Kansas City. There’s less clarity on guard Richie Incognito, who has missed three straight games with a sore Achilles, and wide receiver Bryan Edwards, who suffered an ankle injury in a Week 4 loss to Buffalo. –Case Keefer

General Contractor of the Year

THE PENTA BUILDING GROUP

n The PENTA Building Group was founded 20 years ago in Las Vegas and has grown into a nationally recognized contractor, serving communities in Southern Nevada, California and Arizona. PENTA is all about people, and this drives every aspect of the way the company does business. With 12 core values guiding the approach to each project— including accountability, honesty, fairness, teamwork and flexibility—PENTA completes high-quality projects while maintaining a safety rating well below the national average, and zero instances of owner-initiated litigation through more than $7 billion in construction and preconstruction services. PENTA’s services span far and wide—building or renovating everything from concert venues, hotel properties and multipurpose arenas, to health care and education facilities, public works and parking structures. An industry leader in adopting new technologies, the company provides the highest level of performance on each project. In the last year, PENTA completed 13 projects in Nevada alone. Its work on the Caesars Forum Convention Center, which is recognized as the Building Project of the Year (over $30 million), is one of its proudest accomplishments from this year.

2020 presented unique challenges, yet PENTA continued to rise above them and continue to work while protecting the organization’s biggest asset: their employees. COVID-19 forced radical change to the entire construction industry. PENTA acted quickly to redefine processes at all job sites to assure that they could continue work, including mandatory health screenings of all employees prior to entering the job site, education for all employees on the CDC’s and OSHA’s COVID-19 risk mitigation practices and requirements, assigning a full-time COVID-19 risk mitigation officer at each site and hiring sanitation specialists to disinfect all common areas and shared tools/equipment. This thoughtful mentality extends to each community where PENTA works. In 2019, PENTA’s charitable organization PENTA CARES donated more than $900,000 and organized 335 volunteers, who served approximately 3,000 hours with more than 40 nonprofits. Funds and volunteer efforts conducted by employees and family members directly contribute to organizations that provide aid to issues such as food insecurity, veteran services, homelessness and childhood cancer. PENTA has donated over $8 million to 350 charities since 2000.

It has managed billions of dollars in contracts and overseen the construction of some of the most recognizable, high-profile megaresorts and high-rise condominiums in Las Vegas, including the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, Palms Place and Cannery Casinos. In order to work efficiently and ensure the quality and craftmanship that M.J. Dean has become known for, the company self-performs much of its own work.

This saves clients’ money and reinforces the commitment to client satisfaction. With more than 1,000 local employees and a core management staff representing some of the best in the business, M.J. Dean has earned its reputation as one of the best, offering precision construc-

The company boasts an extensive safety program, where its focus continues to be the successful completion of every project on time and within budget, while adhering to the strictest standards of safety for all employees on site. M.J. Dean is currently underway on the Madison Square Garden Sphere, a new venue that is projected to create 3,500 jobs while under construction. Once completed, the venue is expected to support well over 4,000 jobs annual-

ly—helping our local economy continue to grow. M.J. Dean also is committed to giving back to the community and supports various organizations and social causes, including Rebuilding Together Southern Nevada, the American Cancer Society Construction vs. Cancer event, and is currently completing a building remodel for Cupcake Girls, an organization that helps sex trafficking survivors rehabilitate, a project valued in excess of $500,000.

MARTIN-HARRIS CONSTRUCTION

n From its laborers to project managers, Martin-Harris Construction fosters a company culture focused on safety. MHC has been committed to keeping its workplace as safe as possible for over four decades and believes that project excellence is only achievable when safe practices are learned, drilled and followed every day. The MHC safety team and on-site supervisors are trained to manage incidents for the benefit of its associates, as well as their families. MHC uses software technology for site safety audits, which are conducted daily by the site superintendent and once a week by the safety team. Management is trained not only to inspect the job site, but outside the fence as well for public safety. Every worker and visitor must sit through a site-specific safety orientation prior to coming on-site, and daily activity hazard analyses are required by the site teams. This year has also introduced new

safety concerns with COVID-19. MHC president Guy Martin joined a group of construction industry stakeholders assembled by Gov. Steve Sisolak to develop best practices in protecting against the coronavirus. Key company leaders and the MHC safety department immediately developed a COVID-19 Action Plan and assembled a “Manager’s Roundtable” to proactively address potential job site issues as a result of the virus. Attention to detail and proper planning allowed MHC to effectively continue work during a sensitive time, particularly on the high-profile Las Vegas Convention Center Phase Two. The facility, which is nearly 60 years old, is undergoing an upgrade and expansion to add an additional 1.4 million square feet to the facility and create a striking new look for the building. This project will feature the latest technology and convention services from around the world.

U.S. 95 REALIGNMENT PROJECT GOLDFIELD, NV AMES CONSTRUCTION

n The U.S. 95 Realignment Project near Goldfield, Nevada, was completed by Ames Construction to realign 2.5 miles of the existing highway in preparation of the Gemfield Mine site. The project goals included completing all phases safely with no incidents, achieving substantial completion on an accelerated time frame, minimizing impacts to the traveling public, complying with all applicable environmental requirements and all federal, state and county laws and ordinances, and obtaining all necessary approvals for acceptance by NDOT for the completed work. Because of the location, Ames encountered several challenges throughout the course of the project, including access to construction water, project staffing, material logistics, existing utilities and on-site raw materials, as well as completing final paving during the COVID-19 pandemic. In order to address this, Ames developed a project-

KOR BUILDING GROUP

n Construction-industry veteran Rebecca Fountain founded general contracting firm KOR Building Group in 2013 with a focus on residential renovations, government contracting, hotel remodels and commercial construction. Perhaps of equal importance, Fountain built KOR on

specific COVID-19 Safety Mitigation Plan to ensure that the work was completed safely and without impacts to the local community. Ames Construction was able to complete the project with approximately 39,000 hours worked, not including subcontractors, with no lost-time accidents. The project was on time, nearly $2.5 million under budget and will have a direct impact on the local economy. “The project is expected to drive the creation of hundreds of direct and indirect jobs in the region, including about 200 contract workers for varying periods during mine construction and approximately 150 employees during the project’s mine life,” said Andrew Conover, director of execution projects at Gemfield Resources. “The increase in income earnings from the future Gemfield Mine will be a major economic benefit to the local economy.”

In an industry that is traditionally male-dominated, KOR is among one of the few construction firms recognized as a WBENC-certified Woman-Owned Business and has achieved additional certifications including DBE, ESB, SBE, WBE and WOSB. The company is committed to working with diverse subcontractors, suppliers and professional service firms, and has received local and regional acclaim for its work on behalf of clients such as The Venetian, The Palazzo and Excalibur, as well as projects at McCarran International Airport for

the Department of Aviation, Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, Hudson News and Jamba Juice. KOR completed 29 tenant improvement and remodeling projects in the last year, including with the TSA on its Defense Priority Allocation System at McCarran Airport, and design and planning within the Excalibur Food Court with the Feel Good Brands corporation. VETERANS VILLAGE PROUD MARY FOGERTY CONTAINER HOME PROJECT BUILDERS UNITED

CONGRAT ULATIONS TO THE WINNERS!

n The proudest moment of the past year for Builders United was opening The Proud Mary Fogerty Container Home Project by Veterans Village. The project was the first officially permitted use of shipping containers as permanent homes in Southern Nevada and was fully funded and built by support and donations from local companies. “This project demonstrates our appreciation for our veterans, our passion for Las Vegas and our commitment to the communities that we serve, said Kallen Kildea, president of Builders United. With more than 25 years of experience, Builders United is a diverse team of professional builders guided by the principles of high performance, dedication to the craft and innovative ingenuity. It has completed over 1,500 large and specialty projects. The company leverages education, technol-

ogy and systems to deliver a superior customer experience, with a focus on development, ground-up construction, tenant improvement, renovation and remodeling services for commercial, medical, government and hospitality clients. For the Veterans Village Proud Mary Fogerty Container Home project, Builders United donated the build-out and placement of 10 homes that were built from 160- to 320-square-foot shipping containers. Each home has handicap-accessible interiors featuring a full kitchenette, bathroom with shower, dining area and sleeping quarters. The entire village runs on solar power, and each unit has full plumbing, HVAC and electrical services. Builders United hopes that this small container home village serves as a prototype for sustainable, low-cost, affordable housing units in other cities.

PACCAR PARTS DISTRIBUTION CENTER MARTIN-HARRIS CONSTRUCTION

n The PACCAR Parts Distribution Center in North Las Vegas, completed by Martin-Harris Construction, sits on 18 acres and consists of a 253,000-square-foot distribution area that includes a 20,000-square-foot mezzanine and an 8,900-square-foot office. The project site features an exterior covered courtyard adjacent to the office break room, desert landscaping, architectural split face CMU site walls with steel picket fence and vehicle-access sliding steel electrically operated site gates. There were several considerations during the design and construction process to ensure high-performance sustainability, including the utilization of fly ash in the concrete for all tilt panel walls, slab on grade, concrete paving and site concrete. Another key factor was utilizing LED fixtures

and low-flow plumbing fixtures for minimal light pollution and water consumption. Lastly, a 300-kilowatt photovoltaic solar array (760 high-efficiency solar panels) was installed on the warehouse roof to help reduce energy consumption. During the preconstruction process, Martin-Harris collaborated with the project stakeholders, architect and design consultants to address issues related to design and constructability, project planning, scheduling, logistics planning, cost analysis and budget control, project management, health and public safety, and quality assurance and control. This design-build approach resulted in minimal challenges during construction and illustrates how proper planning prior to construction leads to project success for all stakeholders.

Building Project of the Year (over $30 million)

CAESARS FORUM CONVENTION CENTER THE PENTA BUILDING GROUP n Caesars Forum Convention Center, constructed by The PENTA Building Group, is a 550,000 square-foot LEED Gold Certified conference facility. The $365 million conference center sits on 24.5 acres and is the first facility of its size built on one level. It includes the two largest pillar-less ballrooms in North America—each at 110,000 square feet with 315-foot clear span trusses. Additionally, the facility includes more than 300,000 square feet of flexible meeting space, two 40,000-square-foot ballrooms, six state-of-the-art boardrooms, 100,000 square feet of multipurpose outdoor space known as The FORUM Plaza and three pedestrian bridges. Caesars Forum had an incredibly aggressive construction deadline. The 18-month project was accelerated to 15 months due to a six-month permitting delay. To accommodate the expedited timeline, PENTA conducted work 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This required constant communication with the client and subcontractors to coordinate schedules and ensure tasks were completed safely and as efficiently as possible. The forum can hold the equivalent of seven football fields. The sheer massiveness of the project required a safety program of the same scale. Having a robust program was PENTA’s top priority from Day One. The strict compliance to

NOTEWORTHY FAC T S A B O U T CONSTRUCTION:

these high-level safety standards resulted in just six recordable incidents, with zero lost time. The project was completed on budget and ahead of schedule. With the goal of a LEED Silver rating, the design of the building’s mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems—in addition to equipment and material selections—were favorable to efficiency and environmentally conscious products. Material selections included those with low VOC emissions, locally sourced materials and LEED-certified products. On the construction side, PENTA implemented a waste management program to recycle construction waste generated onsite, reuse asphalt materials removed during demolition and recycle steel materials demolished for bridge construction. Additionally, an indoor air-quality management program was implemented to monitor and minimize construction activities from impacting air quality during construction and protect HVAC ductwork from construction dust. PENTA was able to obtain the point requirements for LEED Silver and acquired additional points in other areas, such as providing a complete air flush of the HVAC system over a specified amount of time. These additional points allowed PENTA to ultimately achieve a LEED Gold rating for the project.

Member Company of the Year

FASTENERS INC.

n Fasteners Inc. has been a proud member of the NCA since 1993 and has made a concerted effort to increase its presence and role within the organization. Fasteners has actively recruited new members in hopes to help continue to grow the association. Aside from active participation in the NCA’s events over the past year, Fasteners also contributed a significant amount of employee support for NCA committees—including Fasteners corporate counsel, C.J. Potter, Esq., serving on the Government Affairs committee—and employee volunteers for charitable events. Fasteners employee Christopher Roby assumed the community outreach lead position for the NCA in 2019, where he organized and executed a successful event with local charity Sleep in Heavenly Peace, which builds and donates

bunk beds to households that cannot afford separate beds for each of their children. As a result of the Bunk Bed Builds sponsored by Fasteners, Sleep in Heavenly Peace has delivered over 40 bunk beds to children in need. The event also allowed for 40 NCA members and their families to experience beginner tool work while providing a tremendous service to the children of the community. Fasteners has committed to being a drop-off location for Operation Backpack and is supporting the event by donating the most needed school items for the drive. In addition, employees of Fasteners have donated over 2,500 respiratory masks to local schools and hospitals, as well as other local organizations such as the Salvation Army and Cure 4 The Kids Children’s Cancer Treatment Center to provide aid during COVID-19.

KHS&S CONTRACTORS n Safety is a core value at KHS&S Contractors, as demonstrated by consistent risk innovation, comprehensive training available to all employees, leadership support, and the role modeling of all safety policies and procedures every day by each employee. KHS&S is committed to providing safety and health-related orientation and training for employees at all levels within the organization. The company maintains and supports a program to educate and familiarize employees with safety and health procedures, rules and safe-work practices. Training resources have been developed using company analytical data, industry-leading criteria and site-specific information. Its safety system is built around three main concepts: management support, training and education, and involvement. KHS&S recognizes the strong correlation between these focal areas and safety performance. This holistic approach to safety requires the partici-

pation of senior management, field and project leadership, and line employees. An example of safety protocol in action occurred during the Wynn Convention Expansion project, a sprawling facility where KHS&S was challenged to provide a safe work environment for 350 employees. While management was present at various locations on-site, additional support was provided when the task was unique, the placement of work added additional risk and/or fatigue was a recognized hazard for the crew. As a result of the team’s efforts, KHS&S had one of the lowest safety rates on the project. Each of KHS&S’ operations share the same pledge to a safe work environment, resulting in reduced accidents and incident frequency—and lower insurance premiums. These reduced premiums allow the company to save capital and invest back into its employees’ futures. To KHS&S, safety culture is more than just a number; its safety program improves innovation, productivity and morale.
