Elisa Hink

Being a part of a special history and its future “I’m an industry kid,” says Elisa Hink, director of restaurants for The Mirage. Born and raised in Las Vegas, her dad worked at The Mirage and her mom worked at Treasure Island. Although she studied history at UNLV and planned on being a professor in the subject, she found that she, too, loved working on the Strip. “Every job I’ve had has been on the Strip,” Hink says. “I found out I liked being of service to people.” She’s worked retail and on the hotel side, but, it was in 2004 that “I first fell in love with food and beverage when I was a host at Prime (at Bellagio),” she said. In 2014, Hink joined The Mirage, helping to manage Tom Colicchio’s Heritage Steakhouse; in 2017 she was promoted to director of restaurants. “My main focus is making sure the leaders in each of my venues have what they need to succeed,” she says. “It’s about taking care of them and making sure they feel that they can get through their day and take care of their team properly.” When Hink looks back on her career, she says she’ll always have a soft spot for working at The Mirage. “There’s such a sense of pride working at The Mirage,” she says. “There’s a lot of really genuine emotion and general friendliness at this hotel—everyone that works here wants to have a good time. If The Mirage was a musical, it would be Singin’ in the Rain—we’re all just here and we mean it.

Manhattan In Hink’s opinion, if you’re going to have meat at Tom Colicchio’s Heritage Steakhouse, then the Heritage Manhattan cocktail is the way to go. It’s mixed with Redemption Rye and Carpano Antica vermouth. The special touch—one that lends a smooth sweetness and smoky flavor—is the hickory-smoked cherries that are smoked in the kitchen. A small bar spoon of the cherry syrup and garnish of a few of the smoked cherries make this classic Manhattan truly unique. –KM

This building is a living valentine to Las Vegas.” –Kiko Miyasato

Steven Kuo

Capturing the American dream Steven Kuo knew only three words when he immigrated to the U.S.: Yes, no and hi. He was 18 years old when he landed in Hawaii from South Korea. Today, Kuo is the general manager of Top of the World at The STRAT. “There is opportunity in America—if you work your tail off,” he says. “And it takes commitment; you have to have commitment.” And Kuo has that. He eventually moved to Las Vegas in 1999 to pursue a degree from UNLV’s hospitality program. After graduation, he worked seemingly everywhere in the city, from The Mirage and Wynn to Caesars Palace and Aria. But after working all over the Strip, “One day I was like, ‘I’ve pretty much done all types of restaurants—I’ve never once worked at a steakhouse,’” he says. That’s when he applied at Top of the World. “It’s the first time in my career that I’ve had an office with a view. You can’t beat this view.” As the general manager, Kuo says his greatest responsibilities are attending to his guests and supporting his team. He says that, as their manager, it’s important that he stays open-minded and adaptable, and to be the best manager he can be. “It’s not just me, I’m grateful for my bosses and my team mem-

One eye-catching, as well as delicious, new specialty cocktail is the Empress 75. “The cocktail is very refreshing and very bubbly,” says Kuo. “We’ve added many new cocktails for the fall season, and this one will surely be one of the more popular picks.” The cocktail is mixed with Empress 1908 gin and lemon juice, and then it’s topped off with champagne and garnished with an edible flower. –KM

There may be a line, as guests are being asked to maintain adequate spacing between groups and to try to ride with their own party, or ride with fewer people. Employees often clean and sanitize the buttons and commonly touched areas inside the cars, and clean escalator rails.

Feel good in knowing your room has been thoroughly sanitized. Surfaces have been wiped down; and linens and towels completely changed out. You’ll probably find extra towels in your room, and can always request more if needed. You may not find little bottles of amenities but amenities are still available. Housekeeping and other guest services may not be entering your room unless requested, and at some hotels, won’t be entering during your stay.

Many venues have plexiglass at payment stations, and marks to encourage social distancing while waiting. In addition, fewer patrons may be allowed in at one time.

OK! It’s time to release a little tension. While you’re here, you’ll see social distancing measures, such as slot machines not being available next to each other, congregating behind people not allowed, limited players at tables and plexiglass between dealers and players. You may need to step away if you need to smoke. Casinos are required to disinfect items needed for play, such as chips, cards, balls and dice.

Although venues may differ, most will implement 25-foot spacing between performers and audience members and space between each party to encourage social distancing. Masks are mandatory. There is a limit to the number of people allowed in the venue, per current Nevada rules.

Most restaurants require reservations, and will text or call when the table is ready. Wear your mask until reaching the table. Tables have 6 feet between them. Menus may be digital or one-time use. Permanent ones are sanitized between each use. Condiments are often on request, and sanitized between use. Bars will space patrons’ parties 6 feet apart.

kiosks that are sanitized often.

While you are here in Las Vegas, there are several things you can do to help keep yourself well and decrease the chances of you or someone else getting sick. Give yourself a self-check before you arrive. Do you have a fever? A cough? Is your sense of smell normal? You must wear your mask in public areas, including the casino. It helps stem the spread of potentially deadly viruses like COVID-19. It’s also considerate of fellow guests and resort workers.

You’ll notice hand sanitizer stations. Give yourself a squirt before and after playing slots or the tables, and anywhere it seems you might need it (after touching elevator buttons, holding escalator rails or getting money from the ATM). If you start to feel sick, get it checked out.

Many hotels have medical professionals onsite or can get you medical help quickly. Practice social distancing. Stay 6 feet from people other than travel companions whenever possible. Places where lines commonly form will be marked. Be patient—even though you are 6 feet apart, you’ll still be moving.

Try not to touch your face. Periodically, wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water, then rinse for 10 seconds. You may also receive personal size bottles of hand sanitizer in your room or when you check in. Take those with you and use whenever it’s not practical to wash, or a hand sanitizer station isn’t close.
