NOTES
From the Editor Viva Visitor Variety!
A seriously cool thing happened this week while Las Vegas Magazine’s associate editor, Kiko Miyasato, was interviewing Vache Manoukian, a flair bartender for Circa Resort & Casino, as part of her ongoing Friends With Benefits series. The purpose of our magazine’s feature is to introduce our readership to some of the personalities they’ll encounter while enjoying their time on the Strip: You read about the personality, then introduce yourself when you actually meet them. But Manoukian was different. During Kiko’s interview, it became apparent early on that Vache was a much bigger deal than we thought; as not once but twice, people walked up to him and told him what big fans they were. One man told Manoukian he had come to Las Vegas just to meet him! It really goes to illustrate how varied our tourism market is here. Some people come here to eat at some of the greatest restaurants on Earth; others want to see a larger-than-life show; and others have much more specific reasons. It’s really the reason Las Vegas Magazine exists. We are your guide to all the different entertainment options in town, as well as the personalities behind them. In addition to Miyasato’s profile on Manoukian ( p. 16), this week’s issue introduces you to one of the most influen-
tial producers currently working in Las Vegas: Ross Mollison, the genius behind shows like Absinthe at Caesars Palace, Atomic Saloon Show at The Grand Canal Shoppes, and Opium at The Cosmopolitan. Editor-at-large Brock Radke’s interview of Mollison comes right as his greatest hit, Absinthe, celebrates its 10th anniversary (“Ten Wild Years,” p. 20). And those restaurants I mentioned earlier? We’ve got plenty featured in this week’s issue, along with a special focus on something Las Vegas excels at: Lobster. We’ve rounded up some of the best places to find it, along with the various ways you can enjoy it (“Consider the Lobster,” p. 22). And those shows I mentioned? You’ll have plenty of options, including the return of America’s Got Talent winner Terry Fator, now performing at New York-New York (“Voice Activated,” p. 15), and a very special version of longtime adults-only favorite “X” Burlesque at Flamingo (“A Perfect Night,” p. 8). Cocktail fans will be excited to know that there’s a new bar in town, one that caters exclusively to whiskey fans, The Tangier at Sahara Las Vegas (“A Taste for the Particular,” p. 17). Whatever your reason for visiting Las Vegas this week, you can rely on Las Vegas Magazine for the best information around.

Daytime Hot Spot Can’t decide where to breakfast, lunch or brunch? Let’s make it easy—book a reservation at Veranda, a longtime favorite for delicious food and beautiful surroundings. The weekend brunch here on Saturday and Sunday is a must-try at least once. Since the weather is gorgeous, book a table outdoors and you’ll be surrounded by lush foliage, towering palm trees, views of the luxury pool and an overall beachy vibe. Fresh, cold-pressed juices are a great start with a favorite flavor, orange turmeric, made with orange, apple, aloe vera, turmeric lemon and black pepper. Brunch specialties include chicken and waffles with basil-fried chicken and a savory bacon waffle, blueberry pancakes served with a cinnamon sweet butter, and the frittata Bianca, a veggie-friendly mix of egg whites, spinach, asparagus, mushrooms, tomatoes, goat cheese and a roasted pepper coulis. For lunch, there’s an awesomely fresh-tasting ceviche with shrimp and snapper and the crispy lemongrass cauliflower with a sweet chili dipping sauce. Wood-fired pizzas, big salads, mahi mahi tacos, paninis, desserts and more round out Veranda’s large menu. –Kiko Miyasato Four Seasons, 702.632.5121
A Perfect Night
Irish Pride More than 30 years ago, the name O’Sheas represented an Irish-themed casino that sat right on Las Vegas Boulevard. It welcomed decades of college-crazed visitors, bachelor and bachelorette parties and played host to one of the best St. Patrick’s Day block parties year after year. In 2012, the beloved property closed to help make way for the new shopping and entertainment district The Linq, which included a newly branded hotel and a

promenade filled with shopping, dining and drinking. To great happiness from locals and tourists alike, O’Sheas was reimagined and opened in a new, 5,000-square-foot space with one bar outdoors on the promenade, a stage for live performances, gaming tables and tables for beer pong. Guests can also enjoy specialty cocktails, like the Irish margarita, and dozens and dozens of beers on tap. –Kiko Miyasato The Linq Hotel, 21+, 702.835.5723
One of the hottest shows in Las Vegas is also now one of the most intimate. “X” Burlesque, the adults-only topless revue at Flamingo, now offers a “Private Edition,” limited to an audience of 30 per show. For $199 per pair, in addition to the show, guests will receive a bottle of champagne, a signed “X” Burlesque poster and a Q&A with the cast after the performance. It’s just the cherry on top of a great, sensual evening of entertainment, in which some seriously athletic ladies strut their stuff to some of the most iconic pop songs of the last few decades. The Heart of the Matter
Learn about anatomy like never before at Bally’s exhibit Whatever you think you know about the human body, you may be seriously surprised by what you discover at REAL BODIES at Bally’s, an inclusive exhibit that takes you on a journey through the different parts of not just human anatomy, but life itself. Divided into sections like circulatory, muscular and nervous, as well as birth, love and death, REAL BODIES leaves no kidney stone unturned in its quest to educate us about what the body is capable of—for example, did you know that the saliva you produce over a lifetime can fill two swimming pools? Or that the volume of air that your lungs inhale daily can fill two hot air

balloons? These small factoids, planted all over the course of your journey, are just the co-star in this production. The main event is definitely the bodies themselves, posed in various ways to illustrate what the body can do. It’s all possible through a process called plastination, and it allows looks into the ways the body works you’ve never seen before. Plastination allows BODIES to use its subjects in not just educational ways, but philosophical. As you look at the displays in the love and death section, you begin to feel a deep sense of your own mortality, examining the choices you’ve made in your life, and realizing how much you
still have left to do. And it’s impossible to not be moved by the section on fetuses in various stages of development. Like life itself, BODIES is a humbling experience. And in a nod to our current predicament as a country and a planet, BODIES now features COVID-19 content, including 3D printed COVID-19 virus models and a short film explaining how the virus reacts to your body and how it is spread. As you make your way through the various sections, you’ll be able to read quick facts about the virus and how it affects each of the different body systems. –Ken Miller Bally’s, 702.777.2782

Day of the Dumpling There are so many neat things about Taiwanese restaurant Din Tai Fung, that it’s hard to choose a favorite. The fun mascot, the window on the way to your table that shows staff filling dumplings, the floor-to-ceiling windows, the list of playful cocktails, the much longer list of dumplings, the baskets arriving with your freshly steamed morsels … no need to choose, just take it all in. Although Din Tai Fung has sections such as appetizers, soup, noodles and side dishes, one of the best ways to order is to choose several dumpling orders and supplement from the other menu areas. Each order contains several pieces, and some best bets would be either shrimp and korubuta pork wontons or dumplings; Jidori chicken dumplings; and vegetable and mushroom buns. Soups and noodles range from hearty options with slices of meat and veggies to the light vegetarian noodle soup that looks like an art piece. Dessert options are all so delicious. Chocolate buns are a treat with melty chocolate oozing out, while the sesame bun is less sweet, but so excellent. –Nina King Aria, 702.590.9520

At Hell’s Kitchen, red and blue work together seamlessly If you are a fan of Gordon Ramsay’s hit television show Hell’s Kitchen, you’ll know that the two rival chef factions work really hard to take each other down. But when they work together, the Caesar salad is perfectly dressed, the lobster risotto creamy, the scallops well-seared, the beef Wellington super tender and the sticky toffee pudding decadent. At Ramsay’s Hell’s Kitchen in Caesars Palace, you’ll be happy to know those crews have gotten over their enmity and the kitchen staff is united in sending you out a delicious meal. The décor here evokes the show, with red on one

side and blue on the other side of the exhibition kitchen at the front of the main dining room. The rest of the space is gorgeous, with a bar on one wall and large windows overlooking the Strip. When you sit down for lunch or dinner, a drink is perfect to start. A personal favorite is Notes From Gordon, a Plymouth gin-based cocktail that features peach, lemongrass and lemon, plus a small note that contains one of the pithy comments that the chef is known for. Smoke on the Blvd features Woodford Rye, Aperol, sweet vermouth and Averna amaro, smoked in a little glass enclosure that makes for a striking drink.
All those signature dishes from the show are available, either a la carte or in a prix fixe menu, plus many other options, like the heirloom burrata salad, spring onion soup with truffle potato hash, braised short rib with creamy polenta, filet mignon and chicken scallopini. And if the speculoos cookie ice cream that comes with the sticky toffee pudding isn’t enough sweetness, how about an espresso martini? With New Amsterdam vodka, Kahlua and espresso, it will be a fabulous ending to a harmonious meal. –Nina King Caesars Palace, 702.731.7373

Terry Fator photo by Christopher DeVargas, Legacy Club courtesy photo
With Terry Fator’s latest incarnation of his ventriloquism show, he veers slightly off the beaten path from his previous shows. Sure, you will see many of his famous dummies, like Winston the Impersonating Turtle, Duggie Scott Walker and Walter T. Airdale, but you’ll also get a glimpse into how and why they were created. The show explores what inspired and motivated Fator during that process. If you have never seen a Fator show in Vegas, you’re in for a pleasant night. With other ventriloquists, you might get some jokes delivered by a dummy, but with Fator, you’ll not only get those jokes, you’ll get singing and celebrity impersonations. Each dummy in the show specializes in one of those areas of entertainment. For instance, Duggie makes a series of observations about life, and Fator makes a few observations about Duggie. Several of the characters belt out tunes, like Walter’s country ones; Fator even has a Dean Martin dummy to really capture the Vegas vibe. Sometimes it’s a little hard to remember that these characters are products of Fator’s imagination, and not just another cast member playing alongside him. And that might be the best part of the show. –Nina King
Kicking It Old School It doesn’t get more classic Las Vegas than the Steakhouse at Circus Circus. Nearly four decades of slinging steaks, the sounds of Sinatra, cozy booths and a classic lemon drop martini (on the menu since day one) have become the staples of this lauded dining institution. Another special thing about the steakhouse is the grill in the center of the dining room, where chefs cook up cuts of meat over the mesquite firewood. It’s a very unusual thing on the Strip.
The menu has remained pretty much the same since opening: Guests choose their cut of meat and then get a side of fresh veggies and a choice of black bean soup or salad for the appetizer and mashed or garlic potatoes or wild rice for a side. Classic cuts include New York Strip, filet mignon, prime rib, and there’s also lamb chops, lobster, salmon, chicken or even Alaskan king crab legs. –Kiko Miyasato Circus Circus, 702.794.3767

Vache Manoukian
Flair bartender has all the right moves Vache Manoukian is causing mad noise over at Circa Resort & Casino—applause and “oohs” and “aahs” type of noise. As one of the property’s most popular flair bartenders—while we were conducting the interview and photo shoot, more than one guest stopped by to say they came to Las Vegas specifically to see Manoukian’s skills—he brings more than 20 years of experience to the role, has won seven championships and made countless Top 5 and Top 10 lists, and has an honest-to-goodness amazing energy that’s simply contagious. He’s also traveled the world, competing in places like Peru, London, Russia, Mexico and Puerto Rico. Born in Armenia, Manoukian did a bulk of his growing up in Massachusetts. He played drums for a long time, but when the band broke up, he still craved a creative outlet. “So I was on vacation with my cousin in Florida, and we happened to walk by a flair bartending competition,” he says. “It was at that moment that I
knew I wanted to be a flair bartender.” Never having bartended, he started learning the trade by working his way into the craft at TGI Fridays and Kahunaville, both well-known flair spots in his home state. After a few years, he decided to move to Las Vegas, one of the top cities in the world for flair; that was almost 18 years ago. Since moving to town he’s worked at the Rio and at Carnaval Court at Harrah’s, where he dedicated 15 years to keeping that bar one of the best spots for flair in the city. When Circa was nearing completion, Manoukian was approached to join the all-flair-bar property. “They really gave me the dream job of dream jobs,” he says. “The energy, the vibe here—it’s just magical. I love how the job allows me to be creative. It’s just such a fun job. We’re creating experiences for the guests that they’ve never had before with a bartender, maybe stuff they’ve never seen before. A Taste for the Particular
Sahara Las Vegas’ new bar and lounge celebrates all brown spirits It’s no surprise that there are so many bars in Las Vegas that many of them cater to very specific tastes—places that match people’s moods and party vibes. Such is the case with The Tangier, the new whiskey bar at Sahara Las Vegas. “The goal ... is if someone lands here in Vegas and says, ‘Hey let’s go find a good whiskey bar?’ that we would pop up on Google,” says Nate Hedlund, director of beverage for Sahara Las Vegas. “This is where you come if you want whiskey—The Tangier—we’re all brown spirits.” More than 200 different brown spirits, to be exact. “With more in storage,” Hedlund says. “You will find whiskies, bourbons here you won’t find anywhere on the Strip.” The cozy bar and lounge right off the check-in lobby is posh but

inviting, and there’s not only a huge brown spirits selection, there are some pretty darn tasty specialty cocktails that use those brown spirits. There’s the Caravan of One, a citrusy cocktail with floral notes that comes in a really cool reflective cup. It’s a mix of Glenmorangie 10-year scotch whiskey, grapefruit juice, St-Germain, Sandeman sherry and grapefruit bitters. Or The Chosen One, Tangier’s version of a punch. With a slight spice and flavors like banana, passion fruit and pineapple, this tiki-type cocktail is made with Buffalo Trace bourbon, Ambros banana whiskey, Funkin passion fruit purée, Monin pineapple chipotle syrup and lemon juice. In honor of the Sahara’s owner, Alex Meruelo, The Self-Made Man is Tangier’s version of an
Old-Fashioned but made with Gran Centenario añejo tequila, Amaro Lucano, Cocktail & Sons spiced demerara and orange bitters and a really cool ice sphere with a flower frozen inside. The aged tequila gives the cocktail the flavors of vanilla and caramel. For a real unique twist on an Old-Fashioned, go with the Tito’s Barrel-Aged Old-Fashioned. Yup, Hedlund has barrel-aged Tito’s vodka for more than 120 days, on property, in special barrels, and the result is a vodka that tastes like a whiskey! “The charred barrels release the sugars in the wood, giving the vodka those caramel and vanilla flavors that you get in whiskey,” Hedlund says. –Kiko Miyasato Sahara Las Vegas, 21+. 702.761.7000

In Italy, Milan’s popular Brera neighborhood is typically a busy, bustling place, especially in the hours right when the workday ends. Then, meeting your family, friends and coworkers for a leisurely aperitivo and a few light snacks to stimulate the appetite is the perfect beginning to your night. You can capture a bit of that verve in Las Vegas at Brera Osteria, a restaurant inspired by both the Brera neighbor-

hood in Milan and by its L.A. Arts District counterpart, Ristorante Brera. The patio setting of Brera Osteria lends itself to ordering one of those celebrated aperitivos, like the classic Aperol spritz, with prosecco, club soda and olives. There are actually five different spritzes on the cocktail menu, with spirits like St-Germain elderflower liqueur, Campari, creme de cassis and Citadelle gin. But there are also Negronis, seasonal drinks like the blood orange martini with Ketel One Citron vodka, Cointreau and blood orange—although it’s heavier than a spritz, it delivers a nice perk-you-up. Plus, an apertivo hour menu from 3-5 p.m. on Friday through Sunday offers a menu of select small items to enhance the experience (and it’s a perfect way to get your appetite ready for dinner). For your lunch or dinner repast, of course order one of those cocktails, and a starter like the fritto misto. The dish is striking, with fried calamari, mussels, peppers and mushrooms; another visually
appealing dish is the Prime beef sirloin carpaccio with anchovies, capers and shallots. If you’re lucky enough to be eating in a week when charred cauliflower is on the menu, order it. It’s surprisingly light; the cauliflower is perfectly cooked and you’ll chase every morsel of couscous around your plate. Pizza and pasta are excellent choices—the house-made pasta is so good, with choices like gnocchi with an arugula pesto and Reggiano cream, and a classic, the cacio e pepe with
pecorino, Reggiano and black pepper. Pizzas are just as flavorful, like the margherita with San Marzano tomatoes and fior di latte; the Vince, with mortadella, mozzarella, burrata, pistachio and orange zest. You can also go big with a variety of entrées like the branzino, served with a white bean purée; lamb chops with fregola and artichoke; and Prime ribeye steak, with Brussels sprouts. And a leisurely dessert and coffee makes a fabulous ending to your meal. The warm chocolate cake simply oozes with a luscious chocolate sauce and a refreshing gelato, while a Meyer lemon tart is just the right amount of sweetness without going overboard. But the tiramisu can’t really be beat—mascarpone and espresso-laden cake under caramel and chocolate sauce. And an after-dinner amaro, a brandy or a glass of grappa will make sure you are digesting everything properly.

Producer Ross Mollison looks back on Absinthe and other shows It’s hard to imagine the Strip without Absinthe, the uproarious and edgy variety show set in the big white spiegeltent in front of Caesars Palace. The show marked its 10th anniversary in Las Vegas on April 1, and entertainment impresario Ross Mollison, who also produces Atomic Saloon Show at The Venetian and Opium at The Cosmopolitan, took some time to discuss Absinthe and its colorful past and exciting future.
Ross Mollison photo by Christopher DeVargas
You reopened Absinthe for the first time back in October and kept the show going with smaller audiences, then took a break. Now the show has been back since March 17 and it seems like Vegas audiences are really appreciative of the safe and fun experience you’re providing at Caesars Palace. People have been saying things about how it’s going to be like the Roaring ’20s again and I think it actually is. We’ve all been sitting at home for a year and we want to go back to work, we want to go back on a plane, we want to go out and have fun again, and where do you go to have fun? Everyone who is coming to Las Vegas now is coming for a fun time and celebrating the fact that you’ve got these parts of your old life back, and we hope there’s no better place to do that than with us. The earliest days of Absinthe were in New York City. What was that original experience like?
Atomic Saloon Show
The company was built around the notion of multiple experiences that occurred in or around a spiegeltent. If you look at those early pictures from when we put it up on Pier 17 under the Brooklyn Bridge, there was a beer garden where you could sit and have a drink in this beautiful location, there were multiple artists and musicians through the day and night, we had a nightclub that would go on later with a restaurant next to it and a speakeasy cocktail bar hidden in a shipping container, and Absinthe was sort of the anchor production of all of it. Absinthe is known for constantly adding new and exciting acts to the mix. What is the creative process behind finding those acts and making those changes? The fun bit is discovering new talent and … then when these artists get to Vegas, you figure out how to take this exciting thing they do and make it Vegas appropriate. It’s akin
to a chef putting together a seasonal menu; you want to constantly surprise and delight your customers, but at the same time you don’t want to take things off the menu that everybody comes for. The show has changed here and there, but I’m sure your feelings about it and being in Las Vegas have changed even more. You have an idea of what Vegas is and then when you actually get in and become part of this community, it’s just such a wonderful town and such a small place with great people. It’s such a small place for us, but when you come as a guest, it’s this big, incredible thing, and it’s been an absolute privilege for us to survive for 10 years. You look back at the big ones, (shows) like Folies Bergère and Jubilee! and you wonder, “Is that our trajectory?” We didn’t feel like it was, but now, to be talking about a 10th anniversary is incredible and doubly sweet
because of the issues we had to deal with this last year. Your company is set to reopen Atomic Saloon Show at The Venetian on May 5 and you’re also working to reopen Opium at The Cosmopolitan, developing an adjacent restaurant with entertainment there as well. What can you say about that project? When we first launched (the previous restaurant in that space) Rose. Rabbit. Lie. and the Vegas Nocturne show at The Cosmopolitan, they were clearly ahead of their time. It was a very difficult set of circumstances we were in, but it was also the most exciting thing I think we’ve built, very ambitious and fantastic. To have the chance to come back and reimagine how to do it and make it a more exciting experience, now with six or seven years under the belt of learning how to do that, it’s going to be really fun. And we are enormous fans of what they have achieved at Cosmopolitan.

FEW CITIES DO THIS CRUSTACEAN JUSTICE LIKE LAS VEGAS
By KEN MILLER
If you’re visiting Las Vegas, odds are you plan on having lobster at least once. After all, this city has perfected many of the niche food groups that most Americans love (shrimp cocktail perhaps being the most famous), and lobster is right near the top of the list. The only unanswered question for most of you is: Where are you going to have it, and in what form? Therein lies the real challenge, for Las Vegas offers lobster in so many forms it’s nearly impossible to know where to start. Luckily, we here at Las Vegas Magazine have eaten all over the city and have had every conceivable version of this tasty crustacean. So allow us to take you through some of our personal highlights. Let’s start with the absolute classic, one you’ve no doubt had regardless of where you come from: Surf and turf. (Are there three more mouth-watering words when visiting a classic steakhouse?) No more of that frustrating choice of steak or lobster. This is the best of both worlds! One of the city’s newest restaurants features a fantastic version—Barry’s Downtown Prime at Circa Resort & Casino. This eatery is already one of downtown’s hottest spots, and this dish is no doubt a big part of that, featuring a sautéed 8-ounce filet mignon (medium-rare, please!) and a Maine lobster tail served with roasted garlic aioli and red wine sauce. Next up is the single lobster tail, so appetizing with the meat popping out of the shell, ready to dip into melted butter. Again, you can find this one almost everywhere, but we’d recommend making it part of a meal at Bugsy & Meyer’s Steakhouse, another relatively new restaurant at Flamingo. This restaurant is as notable for its food as for its décor, courtesy of world-renowned designer Jonathan Adler. This tribute to the mobsters of old is as about a quintessential Vegas experience as you’re liable to find on the Las Vegas Strip. Another essential example of this staple is the one at Vic & Anthony’s

Steakhouse at the Golden Nugget, a wonderful accompaniment to one of the property’s world-class steaks. Elsewhere on the Strip, you’ll find all sorts of wonderful variations on the lobster tail. One of our personal favorites is the 2 1/2-pound Cantonese lobsters at Catch at Aria. This is a serious dish with serious flavor, the lobster divided up into succulent bites and served with sake, oyster sauce, scallions and garlic. So amazing! And Harvest by Roy Ellamar at Bellagio, a restaurant that stresses sustainably produced proteins, serves up a stone oven-roasted Maine lobster with citrus and seaweed butter. Like everything else at Harvest, it’s unforgettable. Then, of course, there’s the lobster roll, a favorite of New Englanders, and no place does this popular favorite better than Lobster ME, which has two outposts in Las Vegas—at Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood and at The Grand Canal

Shoppes at The Venetian and The Palazzo. Everything is served deli counter-style, and there are also some other lobster-based delights you’ll want to sample while you’re here: Lobster crab fries, lobster grilled cheese, and a “lobsicle”—a 4-ounce Maine lobster tail on a stick! For a true Vegas moment (especially if money is no object), we highly recommend the “One Pounder,” which is exactly what it sounds like: a full pound of Maine lobster meat. Sure, you’ll probably say that sounds like a lot, but let’s be honest: You’ll eat every bite and love it! And what’s a story about lobster without mentioning the seafood tower? It seems almost inconceivable to experience Las Vegas without indulging in at least one. There are so many great version of this up and down the Las Vegas Strip. We’ve already mentioned Bugsy & Meyer’s Steakhouse, but that version definitely bears mentioning. It’s a terrifically displayed collection of seafood delights, with lobster (appropriately) towering over the rest. Another version that will satiate everyone at the table is the monster version served at Delmonico Steakhouse at The Venetian, piled high with not only lobster

tails but oysters, red king crab legs and poached shrimp. This might just end up being your entire meal. Now we start getting into some of the more off-the-beaten-path lobster options out there. For instance, if you’re a big brunch fan (and if you’re visiting Las

Vegas, we would certainly hope so!), head to Green Valley Ranch Resort in Henderson and Bottiglia Cucina & Enoteca, where as part of your overall experience, you can order the lobster Benedict—butter-poached lobster, Parmesan creamed spinach and spiced hollandaise sauce.
Another option we see popping up on more and more menus is lobster mac and cheese. Needless to say, this is one menu item we always order when we see it, for every restaurant tackles this item differently. We’ve yet to have one we weren’t crazy about. We’d start with the version at VooDoo Steakhouse at Rio, as much for the side dish itself as for the ridiculously cool views from 50 floors up. How about salads? There’s a splendid lobster salad at the newly opened Estiatorio Milos at The Venetian. This Greek restaurant celebrates the sea’s bounty, and this is one of the restaurant’s most popular offerings. And what’s a salad without a soup? Again, there are plenty of lobster bisques to sample up and down the Strip, but we’re seriously partial to the one created by Top Chef Tom Colicchio at his Craftsteak restaurant at MGM Grand. Flavored with tarragon, it’s so creamy and decadent. Finally, taco fans can rejoice that Nobu at Caesars Palace has a seriously ampedup version. Now go get your lobster on!

Desert stunner is environmentally friendly and the ultimate in luxury Let’s face it: Big-city life can become a bit stressful at times. It’s not unusual to see enormous crowds flock to outdoor must-visit spots like Valley of Fire, Red Rock Conservation Area or Mount Charleston to get away from it all. And admit it: You love the outdoors so much, you wish you lived closer, right? Well, your wish has been granted. There’s an amazing home for sale in the small town of Blue Diamond, less than an

hour’s drive from the heart of Vegas. To call this a stunner is a considerable understatement; not only is it environmentally friendly, it’s compromised nothing in the way of luxury or comfort. This 4,500-square-foot showcase, listed by Anthony Spiegel, sits nestled right up to a huge mountain bike trail system that loops in and out of Blue Diamond. Its floor-to-ceiling windows offer ample views of Red Rock Canyon, an area
of endless enjoyment for millions of tourists and locals alike. It was designed by PUNCH Architecture and built by Bugbee Custom Homes, and it’s truly a one-of-a-kind residence, perfect for families who both want to spend plenty of time outdoors and indoors. The three bedrooms and four bathrooms offer ample space for the whole crew, while the 20,473-square-foot backyard (completely

private) will have everyone dreaming about the possibilities. If you’re planning on plenty of outdoor parties, great news: There’s not one, but two remote-controlled fire pits that practically demand you come outside during the colder months. And on those occasions when you just want to be by yourself, this home is the ideal space to just sit back and reflect. You may never want to go back inside!
The home’s construction quality is apparent in every nook and cranny, from the solid white oak flooring to the sandstone, which was sourced from a private local quarry. The exterior Corten steel is distinctive, and promises to get even more so over the years as its patina continues to evolve. Exciting amenities here include a solar system (making this home nearly off the grid
in more ways than one), a 1,200-square-foot garage with a green roof (desert vegetation, of course!), a Creston system that manages cooling, heating, lighting, security and blinds, an air conditioning system that includes linear diffusers, and radiant heat in both the master suite and bathroom. –Ken Miller 4 Montana Court, $5,350,000, 702.445.4555, License No. BS.0145405

In March, the State of Nevada announced that al-

Las Vegas Strip this week are no doubt wondering:

and events will remain at 250 people or 50 percent,
Las Vegas experience will look like.
You may notice some guests (including yourself) headed straight to the elevators. That’s because contactless check-in is no longer a thing of the future. At MGM Resorts International properties, check in on your phone when you get close to the resort, and you’ll be able to pay and get a digital key. You can also check in with a contactless option on a kiosk and a more traditional front-desk option. Caesars Entertainment has rearranged front-desk areas and lines to accommodate social distancing, and provides hand sanitizer. Some hotels also have plexiglass installed at the front desk.
Hand sanitizer, everywhere! Every hotel is required to have stations for hand sanitizing throughout. MGM Resorts’ properties even offer new handwashing stations. You’ll notice that employees are masked and, if their job requires it, gloved. This goes for those employees you see and those who labor behind the scenes, in restaurants, loading docks and other areas. Those employees undergo a health self-screening daily and most are also screened for temperature.
Pools are open again, but operations are significantly different from before. For example, at Wet Republic at MGM Grand and Liquid at Aria, reservations will be required for all hotel and non-hotel guests, and VIP sections will be separated to allow for social distancing. In addition, rigorous cleaning protocols will be implemented.
What a difference a year makes! In 2020, there was little, if any, attendance allowed at sporting events across the country (and none whatsoever in Las Vegas sports venues once the shutdown of the Strip was announced). Now, not only are your favorite teams back, you can buy tickets! And popcorn! And beer! For example, the Vegas Golden Knights can now allow up to 9,000 fans at T-Mobile Arena. Just make sure to be proactive in buying your ticket—demand is bound to be very high!
Experiences will vary depending on venue, but every effort is made to make the experience as safe as possible. For example, at Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood Resort, you can now access a digital story directory on your phone. There’s also a digital coupon book with nearly 50 offers, which you can access by going to miraclemileshopslv.com. Another digital assist is available from Jules, the retail center’s chatbot, and she can be reached via text message, Facebook Messenger or the retail center’s website. And finally, QR codes make dining easy, as you can see the entire menu on your phone.

OK! It’s time to release a little tension, and maybe win a few bucks. Go grab some cash, and head to the floor. While you’re here, you’ll see a variety of measures being taken to increase social distancing, such as slot machines not being available right next to each other, congregating behind each other not allowed, a limited number of players at the tables and plexiglass partitions between dealers and players. You may be asked to step away from the game if you remove your mask to smoke. Casinos are required to have a plan to disinfect all the items needed to play, such as chips, cards, balls and dice.
The show experience will differ widely, depending on the venue. For example, Absinthe at Caesars Palace, which is performed in a tent, is currently not in the round. Rather, the audience faces one side of the theater, with the action taking place across from them. It has a 660-seat capacity, but currently offers 180 seats per show. And, of course, everyone is required to wear a mask, audience members and performers included. Temperature checks are still mandatory before entering, and the venue is sanitized before and after every performance. You can learn more about every show by calling the box office.
Most restaurants require reservations, although not all. Many will text or call when your table is ready, saving you the hassle of waiting in line. You’re required to wear your face mask until you reach your table. It may feel much more intimate, as tables have 6 feet between them. At some restaurants, permanent menus are sanitized between each use. Condiments won’t simply be stored on the table, and are sanitized between customers. Bars will also be spacing patrons’ parties 6 feet apart.
.36. 4.18.21 6.14.20 LAS LASVEGAS VEGASMAGAZINE MAGAZINE
Although the number of attractions in Vegas isn’t as high as a few months ago, sanitation is still high on those that are open, and social distancing is easily seen. For instance, on New York-New York’s Roller Coaster, cars are loaded with the same party, and alternate cars will be empty.
Nightclubs have returned, but the usual operations have significantly changed. For example, at Omnia at Caesars Palace and Hakkasan at MGM Grand, touchless menus are now the norm via scannable QR codes, and the venues are operated as lounges, with social distancing and mask-wearing enforced.
Las Vegas is getting closer and closer to full operation, but your safety is still the top priority. Here are few more things you should know about efforts to make you as safe as possible. Feel good in knowing your room has been thoroughly sanitized. Surfaces have been wiped down, and linens and towels completely changed out. You’ll probably find extra towels in your room, and can always request more if needed. You may not find
little bottles of amenities, but amenities are still available. Housekeeping and other guest services may not be entering your room unless requested. You must still wear your mask in public areas, including the casino. While the vaccine rollout has
been successful so far, precautions must still be taken. It’s also considerate of fellow guests and resort workers. When you ride elevators and escalators, there may be a line, as guests are being asked to maintain adequate spacing between groups
and try to ride with their own party, or ride with fewer people. Employees often clean and sanitize the buttons and commonly touched areas inside the cars. When in lines, practice social distancing. Stay 6 feet from people other than your
travel companions whenever possible. Be patient—even though you are 6 feet apart, you’ll still be moving. When you depart, one of the best ways is to check-out on the TV in your room. Some hotels have check-out kiosks that are sanitized often.
