The Great News Continues While most of the Strip has reopened to enormous success, there are still many shows, restaurants, entertainment venues, festivals, and other visitor favorites that have yet to return. But every week brings more exciting annoucements, and this week is no exception!

One of the Strip’s most popular productions, Criss Angel MINDFREAK, finally returns to Planet Hollywood Resort this week. (“Hocus Pocus Focus,” p. 38). One of the city’s most popular music festivals, Psycho Las Vegas, makes its return as well to Mandalay Bay (“Unleashing Hell,” p. 10).

And one of the Strip’s most beloved acts, comedy magician Mac King, brings his afternoon, family-friendly show back to the Strip, albeit at a new property, Excalibur (“Afternoon Delight,” p. 13).

In addition to all this, managing editor Nina King has compiled a great “checklist” when you plan on returning later in the year (“Coming Attractions,” p. 30). Trust us: There’s so much new stuff coming up, you won’t have enough vacation time saved up to fit it all in!

The Last Laugh Long before America’s Got Talent began populating the Las Vegas Strip with worldclass entertainers, the television show Star Search helped launch its fair share of entertainers, including comedian Scott Thompson, better known as Carrot Top (Luxor, 16+, 702.262.4400).

And while he was, in fact, a runner-up in that competition (yeah, we can’t believe it either), he parlayed his exposure into one of the most successful comedy careers in entertainment history, and currently has one of the longest-running residencies on the Las Vegas Strip. Not bad for second place!

In case you’ve never seen Carrot Top at work, expect plenty of visual gags that come at you at a breakneck pace, some of which work, some of which don’t. But as you quickly discover, whether they work or not isn’t the point. Objects by themselves aren’t funny; the man wielding them definitely is. –Ken Miller

Unleashing Hell Some of music’s most extreme bands will converge on the Las Vegas Strip this week for an annual festival that always delivers the high-powered goods over a three-day period: The Psycho Las Vegas festival. Dozens of bands are part of this year’s festival, highlighted by American metal groups Deafheaven, pictured, and Danzig. And while the perception might be that this festival is only for the head-banging crowd, think again: The bill also features pop/rock band The Flaming Lips, rapper GZA, and rocker Ty Segall, all of whom are known for their wide-ranging discographies.

But fear not, you metal worshipers. The lineup this year provides plenty of the music you do expect. While it hasn’t released an album since 2015’s Goliathan, North Carolina-based stoner metal band Weedeater have plenty of doom-laden material to keep the crowd busy. And California-based heavy metal band High on Fire is high on its recent Grammy win (they won in 2019 in the Best Metal Performance category for “Electric Messiah”), so look for its performance to be even more intense than usual. And East Coast grindcore unit Full of Hell are sure to unleash some when they hit the stage. –Ken Miller

Sing, Sing a Song

Top-to-Bottom Fun The Eiffel Tower Viewing Deck really is a cool attraction on the Las Vegas Strip—and one with some of the best views of said Strip.

Hop aboard the elevator—with glass walls so you can watch as you climb higher and higher—that takes riders 46 stories into the air to the top of the half-scale replica of the real deal in France.

Once at the top, the open-air, wraparound observation deck provides optimal views of

Got Guts?

The STRAT’s thrill rides will challenge your nerve “You must be high.” Whether or not you’ve ever heard that term in your day-to-day life, you’ll experience it when you head up to the observation deck at The STRAT for a little fun in the sun.

At the top of the iconic tower at the hotel-resort are three thrill rides that will leave you feeling brave and bemused, dazed and confused, all at the same time.

The story of those amusement rides begins with the gala opening of The STRAT casino in 1996, where two rides were introduced: The Big Shot and the Let It Ride High Roller coaster. The drop tower ride Big Shot, looking like the biggest

ring-the-bell game you’ve ever seen, propels its riders straight up at approximately 45 mph from 921 feet to 1,081 feet. No, you can’t wear your flip-flops.

Although the roller coaster closed in 2005, two other heart-pounding rides opened. The X-Scream actually emulates a roller coaster itself, as a car rolls back and forth on a piece on track. Of course, it’s not exactly the gentlest of motions, and it may just startle the heck out of you. And then, of course, it’s time to get tipped over the edge—and if that doesn’t freak you out, we don’t know what will.

Wait, we do know what will: The huge arcing arms of the inverted centrifuge ride Insanity, which hangs you 64 feet over the edge of the tower while rapidly spinning (3 Gs). And it’s not even level—you will be spinning at an angle. Oh, sweet geez.

All the rides have separate requirements, from age to height, weight and medical restrictions.

Bonus thrill points: Jump off the tower. Yes, you can, on SkyJump, a controlled plummet all the way to the bottom, 855 feet down. Chicken out?

Fill Up Your Senses Walk into the lobby at Blackout Dining in the Dark, and you’ll be walking into an adventure for the senses; well, except for the sense of sight.

In this unique dining experience, you first make a series of choices that help guide the chef into the creation of your meal (Sweet? Savory?

Vegetarian?). Then you are led through an area that acts much like an airlock, but just for light, and into the completely dark dining room. You’ll get a complete, multicourse meal here, with the emphasis on really using those senses to try to figure out what you have eaten. You won’t be allowed to take your phone or electronics in, so dine with someone you can talk to during a whole meal without interruption.

Lengthy Discussion

See Creatures Here in the desert, the whole idea of seeing sea creatures swimming around seems a little far-fetched—until you enter Shark Reef Aquarium. On the way in you’ll see Komodo dragons and snakes, and get to read a little about the denizens of the attraction and about the Shark Reef itself, which is designed to resemble a temple being reclaimed by the ocean.

of sharks, sea turtles, octopi, rays, piranha and jellyfish inhabit the various tanks in the attraction. An especially neat area is the glass-walled tunnel, where sharks of various sizes swim around you.

We’re talking about Longbar at The D, which runs the length of the hotel property and has tons of seating. Guests can watch as talented bartenders whip up cocktails, flair bartending-style. Afternoon Delight

Longtime and beloved Las Vegas performer blends comedy and magic When a show opens with the tune “If You’re Happy and You Know It” blasting through the speakers, there’s a certain silliness and enjoyment that takes over—and this silliness and enjoyment is a high that lasts throughout The Mac King Comedy Magic Show.

After spending more than two decades delighting audiences—both kids and adults— at Harrah’s, King recently made the move to Excalibur, where he continues his schedule of two shows an afternoon. Blending comedy and magic is not something that is the norm, King explains; usually a magician has an air of mystery and remains stoic throughout a performance.

But for King, a man that came from a family of

self-proclaimed comedians, the dinner table was the premiere pulpit to see who could be the funniest. Comedy was ingrained—and so was magic.

Both his grandfathers dabbled in it; one of his grandfathers taught King his first trick involving a rope. Audience members are introduced to this trick, and while it requires nothing more than a rope and a pair of scissors, they’ll be pleasantly surprised and quite taken aback by its power to confound the mind.

While King possesses the air of an unassuming magician, looking more like a 1970s salesman with his plaid suit and briefcase full of tricks, the man truly sets the stage afire with his impressive skills. Whether it’s the bit where he goes “fish-

ing” and conjures up a real goldfish at the end of his fishing pole or guesses the correct audience member’s playing card and pulls it out of a sealed cereal box, King’s parade of illusions constantly leave the audience stunned—and laughing.

During one trick, King calls up two audience members, giving them each a pile of playing cards. He puts on a “cloak of invisibility” and proclaims to everyone that he will transfer three cards out of one volunteer’s pocket into the other volunteer’s pocket using only magic. The laughs come in when King is doing the transferring, one card at a time, and asks one volunteer in a disembodied voice: “Did you feel No. 2 land in your pants?” –Kiko Miyasato

Fast and Curious Those who followed Shin Lim’s journey on America’s Got Talent know his story very well by now: He was training to be a classical pianist, but because of carpal tunnel syndrome, he had to choose between the piano and magic. Most who have had the pleasure of seeing him perform must believe he made the right decision. It’s a safe bet to say that Lim’s residency at The Mirage is one of the hottest on the Las Vegas Strip, and when you add AGT competitor and mentalist Colin Cloud into the mix, you have a show that just can’t miss.

Lim and Cloud take turns entertaining the audience; there’s plenty of audience participation when Cloud comes out, and he’s the perfect complement to Lim’s awe-inspiring magic, helping to keep the crowd laughing and loose. His is a different kind of magic than Lim, but it’s no less impressive. But it’s Lim that truly steals the show, with lightning-fast sleight-of-hand that will make you rethink that whole blinking thing. –Ken Miller The Mirage, 800.745.3000 Ticketmaster

Summer Fun There are few venues in the Vegas Valley that offer the sheer variety and entertainment value of Topgolf Las Vegas. Great Dining, Great Personality Downtown steakhouse has all your favorites Longtime Las Vegas visitors are likely familiar with the name Barry S. Dakake. He’s one of the city’s preeminent chefs, known for years as the face behind N9NE Steakhouse at the Palms (a huge celebrity hangout). That restaurant closed years ago, but Dakake returned to the Vegas dining scene in a big way—at a new steakhouse at Circa Resort & Casino that bears his name.

And Barry’s Downtown Prime has become a must-visit destination for downtown visitors.

For starters, it just looks fantastic—from the exclusive-feeling entrance to the retro interior, this place exudes quality and comfort. If the Rat

Pack was around today, you’d completely expect to see them here every night.

What you’ll notice immediately is how special you’ll feel when you’re here—just like at his previous restaurant, Dakake gets personally involved with customers, walking the floor, checking on everyone’s meal and striking up conversations.

His enthusiasm for food and the dining experience is infectious. You’ll be coming back here for his presence as much as the food itself.

And what food it is! From appetizers such as the egg noodle bone marrow luge (served with crispy pancetta, sherry, Parmesan, Reggiano

and garlic butter) to entrées such as classic surf and turf (accented with truffle aioli and red wine sauce), everything on this menu needs to be tried at least once. That also goes for the steak selection, from Barry’s Steak (a 12-ounce rib cap from Creekstone Farms in Arkansas) to a 40-day, dryaged, 40-ounce tomahawk. The steak sauces are a must, from horseradish and chimichurri to au poivre and roasted shallot red wine.

Longtime fans of Dakake’s will immediately notice the side called George’s Cream Corn (a N9NE favorite). This is a revelation and a classic.

Spanning the Globe

Fans of Iron Chef no doubt know how big a deal Masaharu Morimoto is. His restaurant empire spans the globe, and his influence on the culinary world is vast. A meal at any of his restaurants promises a combination of Japanese and Western ingredients to create something unique. You can experience this at his eponymous restaurant, Morimoto, in Las Vegas.

From appetizers like tuna pizza (with anchovy aioli, olives and jalapeño) to toro tartare (sour cream balanced against wasabi), you can feel East and West influences, and that extends to pan-fried pork gyoza, combining Napa cabbage and sake ginger sauce.

Entrées range from braised black cod with a ginger-soy reduction to Angry Chicken served with roasted peppers. The steak selection includes Japanese wagyu, both A-5 and F-1. All are served with Morimoto’s sweet onion and garlic jus. Make sure to pair your entrée with terrific sides like blistered shishito peppers in yuzu soy, spicy green beans in a Chinese barbecue sauce, and roasted marble potatoes in sea salt. –Ken Miller

Chill Like Jimmy Spread across three levels, including six bars and two patios that overlook bustling Las Vegas Boulevard, the Caribbean-themed, Jimmy Buffet-inspired restaurant Margaritaville offers fun bites with a nod to the iconic singer like Cheeseburger in Paradise, Jimmy’s Jammin’ Jambalaya and Key West chicken quesadilla.

Pretty in Pink It’s a beautiful space made even more inviting by its impressive, modern take on classic French cuisine. Bouchon, by famed chef Thomas Keller, has become a favorite spot for both locals and tourists for its bakery treats, Sunday brunch and bustling Parisian bistro atmosphere. And now, guests have even more reason to pay a visit—the Summer of Rosé specialty menu.

Through Sept. 22, the restaurant offers a curated menu of both French and California

Helping to guide bodies through Bodies “If anyone ever scraped their knee I was always there with a Band-Aid,” says Las Vegas native Martha Montes. So, it seems quite fitting that she works as a medical docent at Bodies … The Exhibition at Luxor.

“I even started my pre-med journey all the way back in middle school,” she says. “I’d attend after school programs, like young surgeons where we would practice dissecting. I’m still working on my undergrad, and still figuring out what field I want to do.”

As the medical docent at the attraction that takes a deep dive into human anatomy, Montes “walks around and answers questions for people about the body,” she says. “I try and give as much insight as I can. People like to come in with their aches and pains and medical history and we try and break down as much information as we can and show them as much as we can.”

She even gets some pretty off-the-wall questions like, “I was explaining one of the dis-

plays of the brain and someone asked where I thought ‘the soul was going to be located inside the brain?’ And my answer was, ‘Who’s to say that it’s in the brain?’” Montes says.

But even though she might have some unique questions, or ones that might stump her—that might be her favorite part of the job— helping answer people’s questions. Montes says that all the medical docents, when asked a question, aren’t allowed to say, “I don’t know.”

She says they’re given enough information, manuals, textbooks and study guides that teach everything about the body—and working at Bodies has helped with her studies and nudged her towards possibly pursuing a position in the medical research field.

Craft brewery still going strong downtown Walking along the eastern edge of the Fremont Street Experience, it’s hard not to notice the silo at the entrance of Banger Brewing, and while the silo does not contain any grain, it does serve as a beacon to alert passersby that there’s fresh beer being brewed inside.

Opened in 2013 as the first brewery on Fremont Street, Banger Brewing still remains as the only one on the bustling street, and over the years has garnered a following of beer fans that is a mix of about 60% tourists and 40% locals.

It’s co-owned by Michael “Banger” Beaman, Nick Fischella, Roberto Mendoza and Eddie Quiogue.

The longtime friends had been homebrewing as a group and appointed Beaman as the brewer, who at the time of the brewpub’s opening had nearly

10 years of brewing experience. (Beaman earned his nickname for his work ethic of “banging” it out when things get busy in a Strip restaurant that all four friends work at.)

The brewpub’s interior is equipped with rustic wood tables, red chairs, an epoxy floor and large windows providing natural light. A patio, which was enlarged during the pandemic, permits more outdoor seating, not to mention plenty of people-watching.

Among the core beers, the most popular include El Heffe Jalapeño Wheat (with fresh-roasted jalapeño, serrano, habanero and green and red bell peppers), Morning Joe Coffee Kölsch (infused with hazelnut and French caramel coffee beans), DTB (English-style brown ale)

and Sandia (fresh watermelon, honey and orange peel). Rotating seasonals currently include Dangerous by Default, a 10% ABV English-style barleywine aged in a Heaven Hill bourbon barrel, and Haze and Loathing, a hazy IPA with hop notes resembling pineapple and mango.

Beaman said that in the coming months he plans to make a lot more beer styles; currently he has 12 wine, bourbon and gin barrels full of aging beer, and coming out soon will be Sour Solera, a kettle sour, and Hoppy Endings, an IPA. For a hearty entrée, take advantage of the smoked pork rack with a chutney concocted of bacon and brined apple. But that’s not all by a long shot. Order the half a chicken with crispy skin if your appetite is large; and vegans will appreciate the stuffed poblano with quinoa, charred corn, asparagus and chipotle tomato sauce. Heck, even carnivores will crave this one.

The list of sides may make you forget about all that has come before. Roasted harissa-glazed carrots, grilled shishito peppers with an orange-miso glaze, mac and cheese with fontina and cheddar, tator tots with chives (made in-house—yum!), asparagus with prosciutto and baked street corn.

Desserts are sometimes hard to justify after a huge meal, but while you are on vacation, do justify it and order the hummingbird cake, a flavorful dish of bananas, pineapple, pecans, cinnamon and nutmeg, with a cream cheese frosting, white chocolate ganache and cinnamon ice cream (made inhouse). If dessert doesn’t exactly work for you, one of the signature cocktails might work as well—the L’Orange Creamsicle combines Grey Goose L’Orange vodka, Absolut Vanilia, Aperol, orange juice and half and half. It’s definitely as decadent as any dessert could be.

Mexican cuisine has continued to develop and diversify in Las Vegas because it’s so popular here. There’s plenty of space for different specialized restaurants as well as similar and familiar

concepts that distinguish themselves with big flavors and exciting atmosphere.

can enjoy while spicing things up with some unexpected twists. Try the house specialty braised beef short rib enchiladas with a decadent ancho chile cherry sauce, bold flavors that pair perfectly with a refreshing prickly pear paloma. While exploring the menu at Mariposa, you’ll notice that each dish has a little special something to it, from spicy-sweet grilled pineapple mango habanero salsa to crispy avocado tacos with tomatillo ranch. These flavors will stick with you.

Speaking of Mexican food favorites, a local institution recently re-opened its beloved original location after a renovation, and the many fans of Lindo Michoacan (702.735.6828) are overjoyed. Cozy new booths and tables and refreshed décor are waiting along with signature dishes like New York steak and shrimp, chicken in green mole and carnitas fajitas. With three locations spread around the valley including the original restaurant just west of the Strip, El Dorado Cantina (702.722.2289) is another local hot spot recommended by many. Its authentic fare and dedication to organic and non-GMO ingredients make El Dorado an industry leader, but one bite of fresh guacamole, chile-rubbed seared tuna or crispy mahi mahi tacos is all you need to experience to become a fan.

Mexican food offerings have traditionally been more accessible and abundant in various Vegas neighborhoods than in Strip mega-resorts, but there are certainly several casino restaurants in this category that need to be experienced.

At Aria, Javier’s (866.590.3637) is known for its hand-shaken margaritas, bright and tangy ceviche, extensive tequila selection, and shrimp and crab enchiladas in tomatillo sauce. But its unique, Aztec-inspired décor and buzzy, almost clubby vibes also set this dining destination apart. It’s hard to find this kind of combination of coolness and comfort anywhere else.

South on the Strip at The Shoppes at Mandalay Place, Hussong’s Cantina (702.632.6450) has all the energy you could ever want in a Mexican restaurant, transporting diners to Enseneda for a celebration of greatest-hit dishes and delectable libations. Choose between carne asada, Baja shrimp or beer-battered fish specialty tacos, and don’t miss the original margarita, the recipe that allegedly kicked off this cocktail craze, created in 1941 at the original Hussong’s.

Ever since COVID-19’s shutdown started easing, more and more entertainers made their way back to Vegas stages, and plenty of attractions, restaurant and hotels debuted.

And that go-go pace has kept on through the year. Here are a few of the things we’ll be looking forward to in the months to come, and that you’ll want to come back to Vegas for.

One of the coolest things scheduled to open on the Strip has to be FlyOver Las Vegas (Sept. 1) In the flight ride attraction’s The Real Wild West, you’ll be transported over the some of the most iconic locales in the west from Vegas to Yellowstone, feel the breeze through your hair and the mist twirling about. The screen for the ride is huge (more than three normal movie screens), and you’ll get a bonus film in a separate area with wraparound screens while you’re waiting for your ride.

Come to town in September and you may face some difficult entertainment choices. One

That’s not the only restaurant that will be getting big buzz when it opens. 50 Eggs Hospitality Group just announced the planned spring opening in The Palazzo of Wakuda from Japanese chef Tetsuya Wakuda, who has restaurants across Australia and Singapore, including a Michelin-starred venue. Said the chef, “The Wakuda brand represents an evolution from my restaurants to date, with a vibrant design and atmosphere that will be an exciting new backdrop for my cuisine.”

Craving some live music?

For three weekends in late October and early November, rocker Sammy Hagar takes to the stage at The STRAT for a mini-residency. Sammy & Friends will feature various performers and songs like ’80s hair anthem “I Can’t Drive 55.”

Two other performances that will thrill you around that time are Sting: My Songs, which brings the musician’s newest album to the Colosseum at Caesars Palace starting Oct. 29 and The Rolling Stones, who play Allegiant Stadium on Nov. 6.

Their grown-up reunion yielded the surprise release of the brothers’ first Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 smash “Sucker” and its accompanying hit album, Happiness Begins, in 2019.

Their music has quickly become ubiquitous.

And now, as big concert tours are returning to the United States after a long year without live entertainment on that scale, the Jonas Brothers are making good on their promise to make an impact in Las Vegas.

They’ll kick off the Remember This tour with

two performances at the Park Theater at Park MGM this week, Aug. 20-21), following through at the very same venue where they initially planned a mini-residency for 2020.

Country superstar Kelsea Ballerini is hitting the road with the boys with tour dates extending across the country into the fall.

The Jonas Brothers’ 2019 Happiness Begins tour sold more than 1.2 million tickets and was expected to continue into the first half of 2020, including a nine-show run in April of last year at Park Theater that would have seen the band join the residency ranks of Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars, Aerosmith and Cher at the 5,300-seat venue. Once the pandemic set in and major entertainment events were canceled or postponed up and down the Strip, it didn’t look like any version of this unique engagement would come to fruition. But here they are.

Those shows weren’t the only headlines the JoBros made in Las Vegas in 2019. Joe Jonas married Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner in a surprise wedding at the Little White Wedding Chapel on May 1 of that year, hours after the brothers performed together at an awards show for the first time in a decade at the Billboard Music Awards at MGM Grand Garden Arena.

The band returned to MGM Grand for a tour stop in October 2019, and in January

2020 they visited Mayfair Supper Club at Bellagio to celebrate their drummer’s bachelor party.

Now that their Park MGM arrival is finally here, the Jonas Brothers have some extra ammunition for the two concert performances. In June, the trio unveiled “Remember This,” an upbeat anthem that was prominently featured in TV coverage of the Tokyo Olympic Games. And earlier this summer, they collaborated with DJ and producer Marshmello to release the ultra-catchy

“Leave Before You Love Me,” a ballad with some serious ’80s vibes that the brothers performed during this year’s Billboard Music Awards at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, which Nick Jonas hosted.

Crafting hooky tunes that get lodged in our collective consciousness is clearly one of the Jonas Brothers’ greatest strengths.

Onstage charisma? They’ve got that, too.

It’s a great formula for a fantastic concert performance in Las Vegas. The only question is, will two shows be enough?

eponymous venue on the mezzanine level of Planet Hollywood Resort like a heavy metal hero cast out of Valhalla but determined to summon all his powers and levitate his way back in.

great deal to do with the dream theater he’s created, a high-tech hybrid of sight and floor-vibrating sound that more sensitive members of the potential audience are forewarned with a “recommendation that you do not attend” in the lobby.

It’s a credit to Angel’s popularity that there were no empty seats observable within Criss Angel Theater for a recent show. Angel revs up the audience with upper-register roars that would make Judas Priest’s Rob Halford proud as Angel’s cast of Mindfreaks accentuates his stage presence with sultry choreography and masked menace.

It’s been more than two years since Angel moved from the Luxor to the property that beginning in 2005 was headquarters for his career-making television series that made him famous, Criss

Angel: Mindfreak. His locks are long again, and he looks more like he did on the series than he did when he sported a more shorn look when the show opened.

A lot of entertainment is immersive, but Angel takes it to a new level as he performs an escape over the heads of his audience and navigates through aisles so close to fans that they can see the details of his tattoos. He revels in the theatricality of his presentation, creating a production that is part Grand Guignol, part Houdini

homage, and part cinematic goth-horror atmosphere à la Hostel and special effects that evoke The Matrix.

It might also be recommended that phobias about things that crawl or slither might disqualify otherwise willing fans to join Angel onstage. Angel dematerializes, redirects laser light with his hand amid flames of fire shooting around him and cracks wise in his Long Island accent between illusions. He doesn’t walk on water but he does seem to have the power to float on

air, propelled in part by the live bass playing of music supervisor Djess.

Angel designates time to promote awareness of childhood cancer, inspired by his son’s battle against leukemia.

He’ll remind you about the Johnny Crisstopher Children’s Charitable Foundation and make you remember “help” as an acronym for Heal Every Life Possible.

The freakiest fans should get there early to make social media posts that get streamed on the ceiling. Angel has some things to see in the lobby as well, including a pair of breathtaking choppers and displays of awards from magic industry honorifics to his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Upon encountering a holographic Angel on the way in, make your own magic by waving to him. What happens next is no illusion.
