NOTES
From the Editor Get in the Food Mood
There’s one thing about the holidays we can all agree on: Food is where it’s at! Whether it’s gathered around the dinner table or heading to the nearest neighborhood restaurant with friends or loved ones, eating is a huge part of this season. And Las Vegas knows that better than any city in the world—there are so many amazing places to take the family, both on and off the Strip, and dining at one of them will really get you in a festive mood. This week’s issue of Las Vegas Magazine is a celebration of dining. We introduce you to one of the hottest downtown hot spots, Barry’s Downtown Prime at Circa Resort & Casino (“Relax and Enjoy,” p. 24). Other highlights in this issue include Brazilian steakhouse Galpao Gaucho at FSLV— Fashion Show Las Vegas (“Authentic and Delicious,” p. 47), Majordomo Meat & Fish at The Palazzo (“Explore the Options,” p. 16) and Sickies Garage Burgers & Brews at Town Square (“Can You Resist?” p. 17), which just introduced—get this—a bacon cheeseburger-inspired menu! Now that you’re in the mood for some fun, go see a show! We’ve got plenty lined up in this week’s issue, from illusionists Mat Franco at The Linq Hotel (“All In,” p. 36) and Jen Kramer at Westgate Las Vegas (“The Joy of Magic,” p. 10) to Cirque du Soleil’s The Beatles LOVE at The Mirage
(“Get Back,” p. 34). If you’re fan of dance, consider a ticket to Jabbawockeez at MGM Grand (“Believe Your Eyes,” p. 13), “X” Burlesque at Flamingo (“A True Art Form,” p. 13), or Magic Mike Live Las Vegas at Sahara Las Vegas (“Empowering—and Hot,” p. 11). And for fans of impersonators extraordinaire, check out Prince tribute artist Jason Tenner in Purple Reign: The Prince Tribute Show at Tropicana Las Vegas (“He Does It All,” p. 14) and Michael Jackson impersonator Jalles Franco in MJ Live at The STRAT (“The Legend Lives On,” p. 17). We’ve also got a special treat for America’s Got Talent fans: An interview with Simon Cowell, the creator of that show, who talks to editor at large Brock Radke about bringing America’s Got Talent Live Las Vegas to Luxor (“Talent to Spare,” p. 30). But wait—we’re just getting started! We’ve also provided you a walk-through of one of the newest lounges on the Las Vegas Strip—Gatsby’s Cocktail Lounge at Resorts World Las Vegas (“A Little Party Never Killed Nobody,” p. 22). And if you’re looking for one of the most over-the-top nightlife experiences around, it doesn’t get better (or more Instagrammable) than Omnia at Caesars Palace (“Next-Level Nightlife,” p. 17). Happy holidays, happy eating, and happy memories of Las Vegas!

Your Go-To Hot Spot It’s a sampling of Italian-focused flavors and a show when you dine at Lago by Julian Serrano, overlooking one of the city’s iconic attractions—the Fountains of Bellagio (if you can’t score the very popular patio, don’t fret; the floor-to-ceiling windows make the inside dining room a spectacular dining destination).

Here, it’s small plates loaded with big flavors. Antipasto like imported Iberico ham de Bellota and raw bar delights like Wild Isles salmon with orange segments and capers get the meal started, followed by mains that focus on meat, fish, pastas and risotto. There are even plentiful vegetarian options, plus
larger plates like osso buco, whole lobster and chicken parmigiana. Lago is also a hot spot for brunch. Enjoying a mimosa with lobster Benedict, banana Foster pancakes or steak and eggs while watching the fountains perform is a Las Vegas experience to remember. –Kiko Miyasato

The Joy of Magic
Westgate magician connects with audiences If enthusiasm could be transformed into pure energy, Jen Kramer could generate enough from one performance to power a small village. The illusionist, a Yale graduate who’s appeared on Penn & Teller: Fool Us as well as Masters of Illusion and NBC’s Today, wins audiences over with three things: A smile that just won’t quit; corny jokes that will have you rolling your eyes but laughing all the same; and making the impossible possible. We almost guarantee you’ll be shaking your head numerous times during The Magic of Jen Kramer, trying to process what you’ve seen. But don’t linger too long; another mind-bending achievement is on the way.

Some of our particular favorite moments: A seemingly ordinary video Kramer shows the audience of her card-handling skills, one which later turns out to be strangely prophetic at the conclusion of a subsequent card trick; Two wine glasses, two sets of cards and a “magic scarf” (cue the “oohs” and “aahs” Kramer has the audience say as she displays it) that helps create an instantaneous transformation; Four different, distinct-tasting drinks, a blindfold, a lemon slice and an audience volunteer’s tastebuds; Kramer’s version of a game show, complete with three mystery doors, an audience
volunteer, a hundred-dollar bill and a whole lot of audience participation; Three beach balls, a fake Facebook profile and a box that hangs from the ceiling. (For those who think magicians use plants, heads up: Yours truly got picked for this, and speaking as a nonplant, I was completely floored by the result.) Kramer’s connection with audiences is undeniable. In a very pleasing segment, Kramer shows a video that demonstrates her commitment to spreading the joy of magic to other countries. The looks on children’s faces is a joy to watch, and is a reminder that magic really is a universal language. –Ken Miller

Empowering—and Hot! What kind of images come to mind when you think about what happens at a male revue show in Las Vegas? Now hold on to those thoughts and then get even more excited when I tell you that Channing Tatum’s Magic Mike Live Las Vegas at Sahara Las Vegas not only titillates but educates—and celebrates—women. In this truly immersive experience, 13 professionally trained dancers perform routines in front of, behind, above and all around you. And the theater itself is one of the things that sets this revue apart from others—guests don’t just stare at performances happening onstage—the men literally perform around the whole theater, which is designed to look like a two-story club. Magic Mike Live aims to empower women, to teach women about what they deserve and what they should want from a partner. But the show is not all about “classis-in-session” moments; don’t doubt that Magic Mike Live is packed with all the sweaty, shirtless and sexually charged vignettes you could want. –Kiko Miyasato Sahara Las Vegas, 18+. 800.745.3000 Ticketmaster
The Beautiful Outdoors Heading to one of the gorgeous outdoor areas surrounding Las Vegas this week? Get there in comfort and safety with National Park Express, a tour company that provides transportation (with Strip hotel pickup) to such destinations as Antelope Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Hoover Dam, Zion and that granddaddy of a Grand Canyon (travel times range from 4-13 hours in a wide variety of transports, including buses, Sprinter vans, minvans and luxe SUVs). You can also tour local areas such as historic Boulder City. The company has also installed germkilling lights in its vehicles, and thoroughly sanitizes high-touch zones on its buses as well. –Nina King nationalparkexpress.com or 702.948.4190

An Elevated Experience Whether you are looking for traditional Chinese cuisine or want a little twist, you’ll find it at Mr Chow. The Vegas incarnation of the famous chain (formed by Michael Chow beginning in the ’60s), incorporates modern sensibilities in décor and menu. The dining area features an enormous chandelier that acts as an art installation, periodically turning the piece into a light show. The menu offers more modern takes on traditional dishes, with sections such as Hors D’Oeuvres, From the Sky, From
the Land and From the Sea, and the playful Pasta section, where you’ll find handmade Beijing noodles, billed as being introduced to the West by Mr Chow in 1968, plus pot stickers, Jade water dumplings and squid ink rice noodles. Best bets on the rest of the menu include Gamblers Duck with steamed pancakes and plum sauce; dressed Dungeness crab in a fluffy bed of egg whites; crispy beef; drunken fish and green prawns. –Nina King Caesars Palace, 702.731.7888

A Holiday to Remember
Flamingo and Linq Promenade celebrate the season You may have never thought of singing the song “White Christmas” while substituting the color pink, but after seeing the transformation of Flamingo and The Linq Promenade into a holiday festival of food, drink and light, it might be difficult to ever remember the season without that color popping into your head. The magic begins at Flamingo’s Wildlife Habitat (home to pink flamingos, of course!), where spectators can enjoy an array of thousands of pink, twinkling lights and decorations like a lifesize snow globe, oversized presents, pink candy canes and Christmas trees. The Linq Promenade is punctuated by a 30-foot-tall Christmas tree as well.

During this special time of year, venues at both locations will be offering specialty items to help get you in the holiday spirit. At Flamingo, several bars and restaurants—including Garden Bar, Bird Bar, Bugsy & Meyer’s Steakhouse and Flamingo Social Bar—will be serving specialty holiday-themed cocktails like The Spice is Right, belly-warming with Captain Morgan spiced rum, ginger beer, cranberry juice, cinnamon simple syrup and a lime wedge; Mr. or Mrs. Klaus, a sweet concoction combining your choice of Pendleton whiskey or Ketel One vodka, Baileys Irish Cream, amaretto and Fireball cinnamon whiskey; Tequila Toddy, all the normal ingredients in a toddy like hot water, lemon juice,
honey, ground cinnamon and cinnamon stick, but adding Hornitos reposado; and Reindeer Kick, featuring Jameson Cold Brew, hot or iced coffee, peppermint syrup and a crushed candy cane rim. At The Linq Promenade, restaurants and attractions are all getting into the spirit of the season. The Honolulu Cookie Company’s limited-time offerings include peppermint macadamia, white chocolate ginger spice and white chocolate pumpkin. Ghirardelli Ice Cream & Chocolate Shop offers—what else?—limited-edition peppermint hot cocoa and salted caramel hot cocoa. A Can’t-Miss Option The D, 702.388.2220
A True Art Form One of the Las Vegas Strip’s longest-running adult revues is still heating up the night after 20 years. “X” Burlesque features some of the most beautiful women you’ve ever seen, showing off amazing athletic skills to songs like “Uptown Funk” and “Would You?” And slower numbers are equally enticing, allowing the multitalented cast to really show some range. But it’s not all titillation—there’s also comedy midway through, courtesy of Nancy Ryan, and a very funny “Mile High Club” segment involving an audience volunteer. Jabbawockeez photo by Erick Urgiles “X” Burlesque and Andiamo Steakhouse courtesy photos
Odds are many of you have checked out Circa Resort & Casino by now, Derek Stevens’ latest project in Las Vegas. If you have, you know that he’s all about the complete experience, including great food. And it all started with Andiamo Steakhouse, Stevens’ worldclass restaurant at his first property in Sin City, The D. You really feel like you’ve stepped back in time once you walk through Andiamo’s doors. This is a classic steakhouse in every sense, from the servers who prepare Caesar salads tableside (a highlight we really recommend) to the classic cocktails on the menu. There’s so much to enjoy here, especially for steak fans. Couples will want to consider the 32-ounce tomahawk, a ribeye that will turn every head in the place. Whatever you decide on, you get your choice of Bearnaise sauce or the restaurant’s signature “Zip” sauce. We recommend the latter, as there’s simply nothing else like it in town. There’s also lamb chops, veal osso buco and a Berkshire pork chop for meat lovers, as well as a vast pasta menu. Shrimp scampi here is a can’t-miss option. –Ken Miller
Believe Your Eyes If you’ve ever taken a look at a clip of the Jabbawockeez on YouTube, odds are you’ve said to yourself, “Yeah, right. No way they’re actually doing that. They’ve slowed down the video.” But we can assure you: Every “effect” you think you’re seeing with this enormously talented dance crew is real. The masked dancers leave no signature move and no favorite track out of the mix. The foundational hip-hop music that inspired b-boy culture and the roots of
break-dancing that brought Jabbawockeez together is thoroughly explored, and the crew pays homage to the genre’s regional styles, legendary artists and trendy moves that came along with them. But that’s just the beginning. Generations of American pop, soul and R&B are well-represented with a tip of the hat to the Jackson 5, James Brown, Frank Sinatra and other icons. –Las Vegas Magazine Staff MGM Grand, 702.531.3826

Serious Staying Power There’s a reason Emeril Lagasse’s brand and restaurants have serious staying power: They’re seriously good. One of his longest-standing restaurants, Emeril’s New Orleans Fish House, has set the standard for dishes like Creole seafood boil, jumbo lump crab cake, Carolina gold jumbalaya and gumbo, but there’s so much more to enjoy on this menu, which is always being updated and revamped to ensure your return visit is as memorable as the first. There are so many great signature cocktails to start your meal with, including the Emeril’s Strawberry Lemonade, made with Burnett’s citrus vodka, and the Bardstown bourbon coffee infusion (the bourbon is passed through medium-roast coffee, orange peels and various spices before being combined with orgeat syrup and chocolate bitters). Make sure to start a meal with seared scallop and homemade spaghetti, featuring heirloom tomatoes and pistachio basil pesto, before working your way to delights like fried young chicken, accompanied by apple smoked bacon, Brussels sprouts and preserved lemon salsa verde. –Ken Miller

It didn’t take long for the rooftop nightclub Drai’s, which opened over Memorial Weekend 2014, to garner praise for its luxe surroundings. One of the most-treasured pieces of Drai’s real estate has become its stage. The nightclub has welcomed some of hip-hop music’s biggest stars to perform, putting on full concert experiences. So much to enjoy at celebrity chef’s Vegas restaurant David Chang is an explorer. As much as he has accomplished—chef, author, television personality and much more—he’s always looking ahead, never satisfied, always curious. Lucky for us, that sense of adventure is on full display here in Las Vegas at his amazing restaurant, Majordomo Meat & Fish. The sense that you are entering rarefied air becomes apparent the minute you set foot in the restaurant. It’s absolutely gorgeous, with perfectly appointed tables and an attentive waitstaff making sure your experience is impeccable. If you decide to start with a cocktail, make sure to try one of Chang’s smoked versions of either an Old-Fashioned or Negroni (a recent addition).

Both are prepared tableside, and you’ll want to get your phone out to shoot the process. Chang’s desire to think differently is apparent all over the menu. Start off with bing bread and chickpea dip to see what we mean. It’s tempting to think of it as hummus, but it is not. It’s decidedly unique, flavored with Chang’s fermented hozon spice. You can also enjoy bing bread with shaved foie gras or tingly lamb, which is just what it sounds like. The smoke motif continues with the main courses, including an 8-ounce Creekstone Farms smoked prime rib dinner cooked over white oak and mesquite coals and served with au jus and, of course, horseradish. Or opt for the smoked
whole plate bone-in short rib, served with beef rice and lettuce wraps. Sides are equally imaginative, including marinated mushrooms and pickled onion rings. Seafood lovers have got to try the miso-marinated Chilean sea bass, served with bok choy, daikon and blood orange, or the lobster lo mein, so delicious with boy choy, chili oil and crispy garlic. For dessert, some highlights include the Major Doughnut, a pan-fried Krispy Kreme doughnut, vanilla ice cream, banana flambé and caramel whip, and the Major Mess with vanilla meringue, peach whip and macerated peaches. –Ken Miller The Palazzo, 866.659.9643

On the terrace, guests can dance directly under the stars, order cocktails at the outdoor bar or book a VIP table. Back inside, the 75,000-square-foot space continues with two levels and two separate rooms. The main room features the huge, kinetic LED chandelier that fluidly moves up and down, side to side, and morphs into different shapes while glowing all the colors of the rainbow. When the chandelier is in motion, it’s definitely an Instagram moment you’ll want to document. On the mezzanine level, guests can book VIP tables that overlook the dance floor. Patrons can take it down a notch in size by visiting the Heart of Omnia—think ultra-lounge with a more intimate vibe, smaller dance floor and the sounds of top 40, R&B and hip hop. The Legend Lives On Yes, Michael Jackson is a polarizing figure. No one is disputing that. But the impact of his art on so many things—fashion, dancing and, of course, music—is also indisputable. It’s nearly impossible to avoid The Gloved One’s influence in modern entertainment; countless artists acknowledge how they owe their careers to his inspiration. Another indisputable fact: Las Vegas loves Michael Jackson tribute shows. Before the pandemic shutdown, there were no
fewer than four iterations of the King of Pop along the Strip. And one of them, MJ Live, is back and delivering killer versions of most of his classics. It’s all due to the magic of Jalles Franca, who inhabits the moves, spirit and even voice of the man and the legend. Don’t be surprised to see a high level of excitement during this show; Franca earns it and then some. –Ken Miller The STRAT, 702.380.7777

Art is life for this museum manager How many people can say that they love their job? Most people would say they don’t, but it’s the opposite for Baylea Clayton, museum manager for Museum Fiasco at Area15. “Honestly, this job is something that I look forward to every day,” Clayton says. “I just love the exhibit for what it is. I love the lights. I love the mirrors. I love the room. I find myself in there way more often than I ever thought I would. It’s kind of a release you get to go in—you just drown in the vibrations and whenever you need a second to step away from the hustle and bustle outside of the four walls with the craziness of the tourism industry, you can just walk into this room and recoup. It’s an experience I’ve never had before. And I just wholeheartedly love it. There’s nothing that I’ve ever loved more at a job.” The Las Vegas local also loves the artistic experience of Museum Fiasco, perhaps because she’s artistic herself. “I’m huge on art and so
I love the idea that I’d be working closely with other people who have the same value for art,” says Clayton, who joined the museum last year. “When I saw the venue for the first time I knew that this was exactly where I wanted to be.” Outside of the job, Clayton is a professional baker; loves to paint, draw and study historical artists; and makes wearable art through her business making custom shoes. As the manager of Museum Fiasco, Clayton helps handle VIP experiences, merchandising, ticketing, revenue and finances, but she also calls herself a “museum interpreter.” “I kind of describe it (to guests) as being stuck inside your own little world; being stuck inside of a computer glitch,” she says. “It’s almost like Tron meets the Bellagio fountains, but instead of water you see all of these lights syncing up with the sound and the music all around you. It is all immersive and it’s like being in your own world.” –Kiko Miyasato

With tequila all the rage, you might want to start the evening with the Hibiscus Paloma, Gatsby’s take on the classic Paloma made with Casamigos blanco tequila, Fever Tree grapefruit soda, house-made hibiscus rose syrup, touch of lime and a hibiscus sugar and salt rim. Gatsby’s also plays with the time frame in which the story is set, around America’s Prohibition era, so guests are treated to a little interactive fun when ordering cocktails. When you get to the lounge, ask any cocktail server or bartender, “Hi, can I have a matchbook?” and you’ll get the response (just like in the novel),
“Of course you can!” You’re then handed a matchbook that contains a QR code revealing a secret menu. Here you’ll find a list of eye-catching, creative-looking libations. The Champagne Bubble Bath, another nod to the Prohibition era and served in a mini bathtub, mixes Botanist gin, Aperol, lime juice, Monin strawberry and rose syrup, rose cava and pineapple juice. Perfect for celebrations, dessert cocktail Sweet Dreams is served inside a dark chocolate-dipped waffle cone and mixes together cognac, marshmallow vodka, Baileys strawberry cream, Tempus Fugit crème de cacao and nutmeg. “Gatsby’s has become the party bar,” said Abdi. “We’ve brought back the new Roaring ’20s.” –Kiko Miyasato Resorts World Las Vegas, 702.676.7000

locals and visitors is the homegrown Fukuburger (702.217.0758), which has a pair of restaurant locations in Chinatown and in the southwest just off the Beltway as well as a concession stand at Allegiant Stadium. Asian flavors and ingredients mingle with a nostalgic fast-food approach to create memorable burgers here, including the Tamago with a fried egg, crispy onions, teriyaki sauce and wasabi mayo; and the Buta with applewood smoked bacon, American cheese, pickled onions and red ginger. Bavette’s Steakhouse (702.730.6700) at Park MGM, a stylish transplant from the Windy City, serves one of our all-time favorite burgers, an 8-ounce patty griddled to perfection with sharp American cheese, Dijonnaise, thick-cut bacon and hand-cut fries on the side. It’s inspired by the legendary Au Cheval cheeseburger created by the same Chicago-based hospitality company behind Bavette’s, and it lives up to the hype every time. Back in the burbs, DW Bistro (702.527.5200) is known for its innovative flavor combinations, terrific baked goods and sublime weekend brunch. But regulars also love DW for its New Mexico chili burger, topped with jack cheese, jalapeño bacon, spicy and fragrant green chilis, lettuce, heirloom tomatoes and chipotle mayo. It’s an over-the-top combination in every bite. Sickies Garage Burgers & Brews (702.735.5400) at Town Square is a casual place to catch a game and feast on bold burger creations topped with signature combos like macaroni and cheese and bacon, pineapple slices and fried pickles, cheese curds and fried jalapeños, and Jameson whiskey barbecue sauce plus peppered bacon and cheddar cheese. Sickies takes the classic sandwich to new levels, and you can build your own burger, too. Tie up your Las Vegas burger tour neatly with a visit to Gordon Ramsay Burger (702.785.5555) at Planet Hollywood Resort and take a stab at the iconic Hell’s Kitchen burger, a blended beef patty with asadero cheese, roasted jalapeños and tomatoes, avocado and jalapeño aioli. It’s cool and spicy at the same time, and if it doesn’t fit your personal flavor profile, try the Stout burger with Guinness mustard, Gruyère cheese, mushrooms and crispy onions, or the Farmhouse burger with Dubliner, bacon and a fried egg. Simon Cowell’s dreams come true with launch of Vegas show
Super producer and TV personality Simon Cowell’s America’s Got Talent Las Vegas Live took off like a rocket in early November. The big, bold Vegas version of the hit TV competition show has taken over the 1,500-seat Luxor Theater on the Strip, thrilling audiences with fresh performances from some of the most beloved artists from the small screen: singer Kodi Lee, comedian Preacher Lawson, acrobatic act Duo Transcend and recent winner, magician Dustin Tavella, to name just a few. For Cowell, landing in Las Vegas is a dream come true.

How long has this live show for Las Vegas been in development? I’d say for over 10 years we’ve been having conversations about this show. About two years ago, after meeting with (executives at) MGM Resorts, it felt like we finally found the right partners and suddenly we were going to do it. Now it’s here, and it’s a bit surreal. Why does this version of America’s Got Talent fit so well on the Strip? Once we put the (TV) show in the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles for the live finals that people could come to, we’ve gotten so many requests for tickets from people coming with their families and having the best time. I’m hoping the show in Vegas has that same kind of effect. I’ve always said, you have to see it in real life instead of just watching on TV because to be that close up to something, to hear these singers and see the acts, it’s a whole different
experience. And honestly, for me it’s a dream come true. I never ever thought I would have a show on in Vegas. Assembling a variety of different performers is obviously essential. Are there particular acts you believe will stand out? It’s almost like you’re trying to create your perfect finale on the TV show. It’s a mixture of magic, comedy, danger and music, everything that’s made the main show work. (We’re) trying to find that perfect balance and also finding people who wanted to be on the (Vegas) show. We wanted people who have always dreamt of having their own show, because we’re furthering the opportunity to enable them to do that. Luxor is an iconic destination. Besides the quality of the theater, is there something that makes this location an ideal home for the show?

I remember the first time I went to Las Vegas to see the building, and thought, my God, this is unbelievable. And when we found out we’d be in that theater, it was even better. There have been so many talented performers in that theater over the years. It was a big deal. Have you been able to spend much time in Las Vegas seeing other shows to get a feel for the Strip? I’ve been quite a few times over the past 10 years. I always look forward to Vegas and I was a huge fan of the Rat Pack. To be able to have seen them in their era must have been unbelievable. But every time I went, I was in awe of the place. It’s just one of those places that’s actually bigger in real life. I just think, it was hard enough selling the (TV) show in the first place, and now we’ve actually got a show in Vegas. I’m still pinching myself.

ith weeks to go before the Allman Family Revival tour kicks off with an opening date in his hometown of St. Louis, Devon Allman is immersed in keeping the various pre-production logistics of the traveling roadshow rolling. There is merchandise to approve, video wall images to curate, considerations for his own group The Allman Betts Band, and setlists that vary with every city. “It’s kind of an ever-changing landscape,” says Allman in a phone interview from St. Louis. “The core setlist is going to be the same throughout, but there’s going to be certain nights when there’s going to be new performers, so there’s going to be tweaks every night. It’s really doing 19 setlists and everything that goes into prepping that.” The Allman Family Revival concept has grown faster than Allman has learned to delegate. What started as an invitational concert-as-memorial for his late father, Gregg, at the Fillmore West, inspired by 1976 concert documentary The Last Waltz, evolved with increasing demand. “This is the first time we’ve brought this celebration on tour,” says Allman. “We started it five years ago in San Francisco and it did really well, so they wanted to do it the next year and they wanted to do two nights. So we did that, and then the next year, a couple of other cities wanted the Revival, so we did San Francisco, Denver, New York City. This year, we’ve got 19 cities, so it’s fully on tour and it’s just a big beast. It’s got a lot of moving parts.” Following the format of Waltz, a concert by The Band
that featured guest performances by Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison and Neil Young, Allman Family Revival shows feature artists who play one of their own songs and a favorite Allman Brothers cover, with Allman Betts Band backing them up. The December 2019 show at Fillmore West features Robert Randolph and the Family Band, Wet Willie harmonica player Jimmy Hall, Big Head Todd and Robin Zander, who followed up singing lead on “Ramblin’ Man” with Cheap Trick’s “Surrender” and Roy Orbison’s “Oh, Pretty Woman.” Randolph and Hall are on deck for the Las Vegas edition of Allman Family Revival, as well as drummer Kenny Aronoff (John Mellencamp), Marc Ford (The Black Crowes), Cody and Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars and sons of producer Jim Dickinson), Lilly Hiatt (daughter of John Hiatt) and Lamar Williams Jr., whose father replaced original Allman Brothers bassist Berry Oakley. Oakley’s namesake plays bass in Allman Betts Band alongside guitarists/vocalists Duane Betts and Devon Allman. The Revival gives their circle of relations an opportunity to reinforce musical blood ties and, in the case of opening duo River Kittens, to form new ones. “One plays acoustic (guitar), one plays mandolin. Amazing harmonies,” says Allman. “I got to produce their debut record and put it out on my label. They’re from St. Louis. They’re really snarky, fun. Just amazingly talented. They always win over the crowd. … They’re gonna get everybody out there, get everybody loose and ready to have a good time.”

The Mirage 702.792.7777
The Beatles LOVE by Cirque du Soleil is where you belong By Matt Kelemen It was a little more than 20 years ago today that George Harrison had a conversation with Cirque du Soleil co-founder Guy Laliberté about a synthesis of Beatles music and Cirque spectacle. Harrison, who by then had worked extensively as a film producer, could envision a workable stage show—although he would pass away before development and design—with a little help from his friends. The result was The Beatles LOVE, which premiered at The Mirage on June 30, 2006. Cirque du Soleil’s celebration of the Fab Four took a hiatus, as did every other show on the Strip, but returned this August with a sold-out opening night and cast-member parade in the hotel. The return came in advance of renewed interest in Harrison’s band due to Hulu docuseries McCartney 3, 2, 1 and director Peter Jackson’s Disney+ documentary Get Back, a re-examination of the

Let It Be film project, with producer George Martin’s son Giles at the remixing helm. It was the Martins’ musical mentorship that made it possible for The Beatles LOVE to become a reality, with Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Harrison’s wife Olivia and Yoko Ono on hand for the debut. The Martins created song segues for the soundtrack, used an alternate version of “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” that’s even more melancholy than the original, backward-masked “Sun King” and drew on snippets of studio banter to create ambience. From there, it was up to the producers and performers who transformed live entertainment to create the ultimate tribute to the band that transformed pop music. Cirque brought characters from lyrics to life, with some such as Sgt. Pepper and Father McKenzie easily discernible. The Beatles themselves are recognizable in silhouette form during the show, with Starr’s shadow playing in time to “Get Back,” one of several adrenalizing numbers including a mash-up of “Revolution” and “Back in the U.S.S.R.,” and a medley of “Twist and Shout”/ “I Want to Hold Your Hand”/ “Drive My Car.” Doctor Robert, Lady Madonna and The Fool feature prominently, as do Groupies, Kids of Liverpool and Sailors symbolizing the trans-Atlantic seamen who brought rock ‘n’ roll records to the port city where

the Beatles formed, and the band members were born. Songs such as “Something” and “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” provide context for poignant and profoundly affecting physical artistic expression. The latter song is enhanced by hand-drawn animation, an effect that’s equaled only by the bubbly underwater universe created for “Octupus’s Garden.” John Lennon sang there was nothing you could do that can’t be done. Cirque du Soleil
took that advice to heart as it created choreography and costumes, incorporated aerial artists and skate ramps, and evoked the spirit of yesterday with the talents and technology of today to create one of the most uplifting, elevating experiences on The Strip. Beatles fans in search of a day in the life that will get them back to where they once belonged may find all they need is to witness The Beatles LOVE by Cirque du Soleil. It’s just what Doctor Robert would order.

The Linq 702.777.2782
By Ken Miller
Linq magician Mat Franco spans the generations Illusionist Mat Franco is the perfect balance of young enough and old enough: Old enough that his “training” as a magician involved not YouTube or TikTok videos, but actual videotapes of legendary magicians of the ’90s, folks like David Copperfield, Penn & Teller and Lance Burton, whom Franco would watch over and over, rewinding and playing everything back in slow motion. (If you don’t know what a videotape is, ask your grandfather.) Young enough that he’s taken full advantage of social media, using the pandemic downtime to post videos on Instagram showing his talents as an illusionist to hilarious effect. Old enough that in his hit show at The Linq to pay tribute to groundbreaking magicians of generations past, including a version of Bill Malone’s classic “Sam the Bellhop” card trick, which Franco has customized in his own, unique version.
Young enough that he appeals to all ages, including the kids who flock to his performances with their parents. One of his show’s most memorable moments is to when he has a youngster join him onstage for the grand finale involving numerous decks of cards, a card cannon, and a red button. (If you find it hard not to press a big red button, imagine how hard it is to resist for a 10-year-old!) Old enough to have mastered one of the hardest sleight-of-hand tricks to pull off: Making cards appear as if from thin air, and not just one or two cards, but entire decks. Franco is careful to thank the magician he originally saw perform this trick, along with a great story of how he and his grandmother came up with an imaginative way of pulling it off. Young enough to know that, as accomplished as he has become in his six years at The Linq Hotel, he’s just getting started. The pandemic shutdown gave him time to reassess his show, and he ended up adding several new illusions to the proceedings, one featuring a poker table, four volunteers and a whole lot of cards, another featuring a helium-filled balloon and a contraption that seems to “drain” its ability to float. Perhaps the aspect of Franco’s show that ties it together so perfectly for fans young and old is his playfulness—Franco can be an absolute scamp at times, messing with audience members who remain oblivious because of Franco’s mastery of misdirection. Kids laugh with glee at these antics, while parents silently say, “Thank god that’s not me up there!” By far, the most engaging bits are those that involve the audience, and Franco knows this; in fact, he takes great care to take note of everything revealed during a show (ages, anniversaries, birthdays, cities volunteers are from, etc.). Why? Because he uses it all at the end of the show in a signature illusion that gives his show its name: Magic Reinvented Nightly.

Go Behind the Scenes of the Fountains of Bellagio By Kiko Miyasato
It’s one of the most stunning productions on the Las Vegas Strip, but it doesn’t just happen. The Fountains of Bellagio has a crackerjack team working behind the scenes 365 days a year to ensure that the watery spectacle continues to flow beautifully. Las Vegas Magazine went beyond the façade and captured the inner workings of the fountains—an operation that few are privy to. Thirty employees work on the fountains, including engineers, pool specialists and maintenance divers— and each employee is scuba-certified and holds Open Water Diver or Rescue Diver certifications. The site is staffed almost around the clock, year-round. Yet another group can be found walking around the premises—mallard ducks, which have raised ducklings on Lake Bellagio year after year. The tour starts in the features support area, where all the equipment and mechanics for the fountains are stored. It’s a cavernous space located just off the 8.5-acre Lake Bellagio, and continues underneath the hotel’s landscaping. The walk-through continues with the bat cave, the compression room and, finally, the control tower. Here’s your chance to take a peek inside this iconic attraction.

This is where the magic happens. The main computers that control the lighting, sound and performance numbers are located in this tower. Here is also where you’ll find the “famous” green button. At the top of the tower, accessible only by ladder, workstations command awesome views overlooking the lake. Each choreographed show is stored on computers. To start a new show, the file is uploaded and the green button initiates the fountains—a button only a handful of people have pushed, including this writer!

Inside the bat cave, located in the front features support area, is where you’ll find the wateremitting devices. Workers clean and repair all of them in-house. The devices include three shooters of different sizes that push water straight into the air at varying heights. The mini shooter (798 total) goes 100 feet up, the super shooter (192 total) goes 240 feet up and the extreme shooter (16 total) goes 460 feet up. The oarsmen (at top of photo column) spray water—this is where the “dancing fountains” come into play. There are 208 in the lake and 13 spares. The streams of water can reach 77 feet high and flow up to 140 gallons per minute.
It takes WET (the company behind the design and choreography of the fountain performances) several months to develop, design and perfect a new song for the catalog. Some of the songs include:
“Believe” (Cher)
“Bad Romance” (Lady Gaga)
“Uptown Funk” (Bruno Mars)
______________________________ The holiday season switches things up with special performances that include:
“Santa Baby” (Madonna)
“The Most Wonderful Time of the Year” (Johnny Mathis)
“O Holy Night” (Placido Domingo)
______________________________
It’s so loud inside the compressor room that one is advised to wear industrial-strength earmuffs. Inside this room sits two of the large compressors (10 total) used in the show. When it’s showtime, the compressors operate at about 3,000 horsepower and push through approximately 9,000 cubic feet of air per minute. Large storage tanks of soft water, used for the fog that drifts across the lake, are also in this room. The ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) panel that protects people and equipment is also here. The panel shuts down all the electricity on the lake in the event of an emergency or electrocution, reacting faster than the blink of an eye.

Songs we would like used for a performance:
“It’s Oh So Quiet” (Björk)
“One More Time” (Daft Punk)
“Theme From Shaft” (Isaac Hayes)
