NOTES

From the Editor Worlds of Wonder

Whether you’re a first-time visitor or you frequent Las Vegas several times a year, odds are you’ve had one of those “only-in-Vegas” moments, a bit of spectacle that really wows you and makes you wonder, “How did they do that?” For some, it might be an illusion in a magic show; for others, maybe it’s a restaurant experience where the dishes look like those amazing ones you see on TV; and for others, it might be a Cirque du Soleil show, where death-defying feats are a daily occurrence. The staff of Las Vegas Magazine shares your sense of wonder. Even though we’ve all worked in town for years, we continue to be blown away by what this town is capable of—and continues to build on. One of our favorite examples of this is KÀ. It’s a gargantuan Cirque undertaking at MGM Grand featuring not only a massive cast, but an overwhelming production, one where the stage appears to morph and adapt throughout the evening. How does it all come together? Well, in this week’s issue, managing editor Nina King takes a behind-the-scenes look at this amazing show (“All Systems Go,” p. 32). Check it out—and then get your tickets! This week’s issue has plenty of other great experiences to enjoy while you’re here. Contributing writer Matt Kelemen takes a look at the enormous success that

is Area15, which is celebrating its first anniversary (“A Monumental Year,” p. 30). This vast entertainment complex offers an incredible array of experiences—and it’s only getting started. No city is more known for tribute acts than Las Vegas, and this week’s issue features a Q&A with Elisa Furr, one of the best in the business, who is currently performing as Celine Dion in Legends in Concert at Tropicana Las Vegas (“Divine Voice,” p. 40). Live music is back in Las Vegas in a big way, and one of the industry’s greatest jam bands, Widespread Panic, will perform at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas this week (“In the Moment,” p. 38). We’ll also introduce you to some of the greatest restaurants in town, including Bar Zazu at Resorts World Las Vegas (“A Taste for Tapas,” p. 24), Cut at The Palazzo (“Puck’s Place,” p. 11), Mon Ami Gabi at Paris (“Sights and Delights,” p. 13) and Aureole at Mandalay Bay (“Vintage Experience,” p. 16). How about some comedy at Brad Garrett’s Comedy Club (“Comedy on the Move,” p. 13)? And magic doesn’t get better than Mac King at Excalibur (“Magic Suits Him,” p. 11). As you can see, you don’t have to look far to find worlds of wonder in Las Vegas. And we are there every step of the way.

Waxing Romantic We know, we know, one of the reasons you always wanted to go to Vegas was to spot a celebrity, maybe dining at the table three spots over or mostly hidden in the VIP booth. Don’t worry; you can still spot those stars in Madame Tussauds Las Vegas. The attraction features multiple rooms with the

renowned wax figures that Madame Tussauds is known for worldwide. And there’s now a new feature that couples will definitely want to check out: Madame Tussauds now offers “wax wedding” packages, in which couples can be wed at the attraction’s “little white chapel” with their

choice of wax figure as a “witness.” Can you imagine your friends’ reactions when they see you wed with Beyoncé or George Clooney standing by? In addition to some amazing memories, each betrothed couple gets a set of souvenir wax hands. Romantic? Yep? Only in Vegas? Definitely! –Ken Miller

You Can Have It All

Aria steakhouse has a wide selection Perhaps the best meal in Las Vegas is one where you not only get the finest ingredients served in an upscale environment, the experience is energizing and refreshing to boot. Jean Georges Steakhouse strikes that balance, and despite what the name says, this is a restaurant where you can partake in a variety of unforgettable culinary experiences. The classic starters you would expect are all here—iceberg wedge and Caesar salads, bacon-wrapped shrimp and chargrilled octopus— and they all shine. Sometimes the familiar is a great way to start a meal! But this is a steakhouse, and you might want to be more adven-

turous and try the Japanese wagyu carpaccio, so flavorful and served with black truffle fritters. It’s meant to be shared, but you may find yourself wanting it all. If you want steak for your main course, all steaks are of the highest grade, and are all grilled on sustainable apricot wood and mesquite, finished with rendered beef fat, sea salt and cracked pepper. Whether you try an 8-ounce filet mignon, 8-ounce ribeye cap from Mishima Ranch, or 3-, 6- or 9-ounce A5 certified Kobe beef, you’ll be happy with your choice, especially when pairing it with king crab legs, diver scallops or bone marrow.

Elswhere, the crunchy organic chicken, served with spinach and hot sauce, is immensely satisfying, as is the steamed halibut with green olive dressing, spinach and shallot crackling. The sides here include grilled asparagus, sautéed corn, creamed spinach, mashed Yukon Gold potatoes and much more. You’ll find plenty of decadent choices here for dessert, including New York-style cheesecake with a sour cherry sorbet, warm Valrhona chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream, and an assortment of market citrus, accompanied by yuzu cream, white chocolate and fruit. –Ken Miller Aria, 877.230.2742

Puck’s Place If you like sharing your food, splitting a plate or giving bites of your dish to your partner then Wolfgang Puck’s trendy steakhouse, Cut, is for you. Under the Large Format to Share section of the menu, you and your tablemate can split the 32-ounce USDA Prime porterhouse, 40-ounce bone-in USDA Prime tomahawk, the 50-ounce Japanese wagyu tomahawk or the 3-pound whole roasted Maine lobster. Want to go smaller? The shining star on the menu is the 6-ounce Japanese wagyu, a 100% Tajima bloodline cut of Kobe beef from the Hyogo Prefecture. Additions include wild field mushrooms, shaved black winter truffles or a fried organic egg. Pescatarians will enjoy champagne mignonette oysters, Maine diver scallops, charred octopus and the Korean-style big eye tuna. For vegetarians, there’s kung pao cauliflower, carrots with tahini yogurt, creamed spinach and winter greens, or opt for the heirloom apple salad or the scrumptious artisanal bread served with Vermont butter and chickpea hummus. –Kiko Miyasato The Palazzo, 702.607.6300

Spooky Good Time If this year so far has made you want to tap out, then it’s time to tap into the fifth dimension at The Twilight Zone by Monster Mini Golf. It’s a great place to have fun, unwind and remember what weird meant before it became all too normal. Not only does the 10,000-square-foot, glow-in-the-dark attraction offer a classic and maddeningly difficult putt-putt course, but it also has eerie props and artwork inspired by the television show, bowling lanes, an alternate dimension gift shop and arcade games. –Las Vegas Magazine Staff Bally’s, 702.333.2121

Mac King photo by Christopher DeVargas Cut and The Twilight Zone by Monster Mini Golf courtesy photos

Magic Suits Him Magician Mac King instantly connects with his audiences through down-home humor and a self-effacing nature—no one is quicker to acknowledge that a joke didn’t work than King, which in itself is pretty hilarious. And King’s choice of garb—that checkered suit that seems just a bit too big for him—is now as iconic as his long-running show, The Mac King Comedy Magic Show. King is so endearing, in fact, that you momentarily forget you’re at his show

to see some magic—you’d rather just have a conversation with the guy while sitting on a porch, drinking some sweet tea. But when the magic does come, it’s very organic to King’s persona—there’s no pomp, no circumstance, no razzle, no dazzle. In fact, the illusions are oftentimes so subtle that you may not immediately realize you’ve just seen the most amazing thing. But don’t worry—it’ll hit you soon enough. –Ken Miller Excalibur, 800.745.3000 Ticketmaster

Drink It In

Caesars Palace production hilariously pushes boundaries It’s a question anyone who’s lived long enough in Las Vegas is eventually asked by their guests: “If you could only see one show while you’re in town, which one would it be?” For at least the last 10 years, that answer more often than not is probably Absinthe, a one-of-a-kind production in a one-of-a-kind venue that has been drawing rave reviews since it debuted on the Strip in 2011. It’s the kind of show you can’t wait to tell everyone about once you’ve seen it. The venue itself makes you feel like you’re part of something special. The Spiegeltent is ornately decorated, its circular space featuring a bar, hundreds of seats, tables, and a smallish circular

12

stage at the center. “That’s it?” you might be asking yourself. But you’ll forget you even thought it once the show begins. That space is used extremely effectively by a variety of acts, all connected by the extremely foul-mouthed (and extremely funny) Gazillionaire, a sleazy “producer” who brags about his money when he’s not insulting the audience and abusing his poor assistant, Wanda Widdles, who’s not above being a bit blue herself. The acts themselves are all world-class, starting with one that may induce vertigo in some audience members—an acrobat slowly ascends to the top of a chair mountain he builds, balancing

himself along the way and sometimes actually moving the chair mountain around. Once he reaches the top, down comes The Green Fairy, an iconic part of the show displaying great curves and great pipes as she serenades the crowd with “Come On-A My House.” It’s the perfect segue into the show’s raunchy—but fun—style. Along the way, you’ll enjoy acrobats, jugglers, strongmen and a few naughty intermissions that will have you doubled over with laughter. Just like the drink itself, this show is intoxicating—and maybe just a little addictive. –Ken Miller Caesars Palace, 18+, 800.745.3000 Ticketmaster

Comedy On the Move Fans of Brad Garrett have no doubt by now heard about his self-titled venue at MGM Grand. Over the years, Brad Garrett’s Comedy Club has hosted some of the hottest (and up-and-coming) comedians in the country, and oftentimes features the man himself. And while many of you know Garrett from his work in movies and TV, trust us: His stand-up is really something to experience. If you’re planning a return visit this week, just a heads up: Garrett’s club has moved. His new, 210-seat room is ideally located next to a lounge in The District—seriously, what better way to get ready for a night of comedy than with a cocktail and some live music from pianists and horn players? And good news! This week, Brad Garrett himself will indeed headline, joined by Ryan Belleville and Matt McClowry from March 7-13. From March 14-20, enjoy comics Sam Fedele, James P. Connolly and Jimmy Burns. “Though I will miss performing in the ‘basement’ and waking up guests who have fallen asleep on their way to self-parking, this is an opportunity I’m very grateful for and excited to embark on,” said Garrett in a release. –Ken Miller MGM Grand, 21+, 800.929.1111

He’s Got Talent Go ahead and let reality slide; you’ve got a date with a handsome magician. Xavier Mortimer, a French illusionist whom you may have seen on shows such as America’s Got Talent, or in his series of YouTube videos that garnered huge response, stars in Xavier Mortimer: The Dream Maker. And his illusions, from close-up magic to full-on appearances, will definitely have you doubting what you just saw with your own eyes. But there’s also a quiet elegance to Mortimer, one that elevates his show to something truly special. –Nina King The STRAT, 702.380.7777

Sights and Delights It’s been one of Las Vegas’ most popular dining destinations for years, and once you enter through the doors of Mon Ami Gabi, it’s obvious why: This French-themed restaurant has some of the best views in town, not just the people-watching on the Strip below, but the Bellagio fountains just across the street. The room itself is also impeccably appointed.

But it’s the food you’ll come away remembering most. From trout almondine and roast chicken to steak au poivre and cavatelli pasta with gulf shrimp, there’s something for every palate. And desserts are not to be missed here, especially the bananas foster crepe and gala apple tarte tatin. –Ken Miller Paris, 702.944.4224

Vintage Experience

Mandalay Bay restaurant has lots of ‘wow!’ factor Wine lovers will want to have their cameras ready for the spectacle that awaits them at Aureole. Its centerpiece is now world-famous, and deservedly so: A four-story, see-through, climate-controlled wine tower, stocked with thousands of bottles and manned by “wine angels” who descend by cables a la Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible. It’s one thing to make your way through the truly mind-boggling array of vintages available on the menu; it’s another to see your particular choice hunted down and collected by your very own wine angel. But that’s only the beginning of what makes Aureole special. This award-winning establishment has been serving up the highest-quality

meals for decades now, and (needless to say) excels at its wine-tasting menu. If you’ve never had the delight of pairing your food with wine specially selected from the sommeliers here, you are truly missing out on something special. The current tasting menu, curated by executive chef Anthony Taormina, features five courses: beets and burrata with prosciutto, pistachio and arugula; truffle fagottini with Parmigiano brodo; Alaskan halibut with Romanesco, chestnuts and soubise; wagyu ribcap with shishito peppers and black garlic; and coffee panna cotta. If you choose to go a la carte, no worries— there’s plenty here to choose from. Appetizers to target include the tuna tartare, an excellent

example of this raw fish dish with yuzu, avocado, wasabi and ponzu, and rougie foie gras, ready to spread on French toast along with fig and maple. Main courses are uniformly excellent here in keeping with Aureole’s exacting standards. Meat lovers will want to try the Prime filet of beef, served with a pomme puree and cabernet sauce, or the free-range chicken breast served with gnocchi, mushrooms and vin jaune sauce. There’s also a terrific peppercorn tagliatelle with caponatina, ricotta and basil, as well as a magnificently prepared Maine lobster tail, served with kabocha, bok choy and miso. The Artist Lives On Are you a Prince fan? No? I don’t believe you. Really? Well, attend just one performance of Purple Reign: The Prince Tribute Show, and you’re sure to be among the converted. Tribute artist Jason Tenner, a pair of dancers and an incredible band give an inspired show, with Tenner ably evoking Prince’s persona, wearing signature outfits and makeup and playing the guitar. (Tenner is bigger than Prince was, but somehow seems mostly the same size; it’s wild).

You’ll hear Prince’s biggest hits, of course, like “Raspberry Beret” and “Purple Rain,” but you’ll be surprised to learn there are some more obscure songs like risqué “Darling Nikki,” which is somehow as hot here as the artist himself intended it. A Morris Day and the Time tribute act adds some comedic respite, so you’ll have a moment to catch your breath before the music takes it away again. –Nina King Tropicana, ticketmaster.com

He’s worked in the food and beverage industry all around the world, including Fiji, Japan, Singapore, New York and the Caribbean. He’s helped run some of Las Vegas’ hottest nightclubs on the Strip. Yup, I think it’s safe to say that Robert Wilkes is the man when it comes to the industry—and he’s brought all that experience and his talents to Golden Nugget, where he’s the director of nightlife. “Pick me up and drop me anywhere and watch me go,” says Wilkes when referring to all the positions he’s held. With nearly three decades in the industry, Wilkes says he follows one mantra: “We are ladies and gentlemen serving ladies and gentlemen,” he says. “We’re professional and we do everything we can for the (customer) within reason. That’s the hospitality industry.”

As the director of nightlife, Wilkes oversees all the property’s bars and lounges, including Troy Liquor Bar, where we conducted the photo shoot and interview. Troy is a nightclub-lounge hybrid, where you can dance to live DJs, order bottle service and dress to impress. “People can come in and relax or party and we’ll take care of them,” says Wilkes. “We don’t hard sell—you don’t have to wait till you get your company bonus or wait for an anniversary to come here. You’re not going to be broke after leaving here. … At Troy our staff develops relationships with the guests. Here, it’s the way nightlife was meant to be.” Reflecting on his career, Wilkes has learned a lot, but he’s also quick to point out that he’s put in the work. “I’ve worked hard,” he says. “I busted my ass and got paid to work all around the world. At Bar Zazu, you may get a strange feeling about the paintings on the wall. It’s almost as if they’re changing while you eat. Well, they are. The digital art pieces that overlook the dining room of the Spanish tapas bar at Resorts World morph from one “doña” to another as whimsical food items float by. It sets the tone for a relaxed meal in the ultra-plush booths that line the walls. At the other end of the restaurant, a wall of wine separates the bar from the rest of the resort, and that makes sitting at the bar for a cocktail both visually interesting and delicious. No matter where you are, though, a beverage is practically required. The selection spreads over eight pages and covers spirits, different types of wine and signature cocktails, such as the refined Isabella, with Lunazul tequila blanco, Aperol, passion fruit, lime and molé spice; and the Sophia, a perky glass of Ketel One vodka, Italicus liqueur, Cava, cucumber, lime, hibiscus and elderflower. Each one of those signature drinks corresponds to one of the doñas, too! As at most tapas bars, you can order a variety of small plates and entrées, here overseen by executive chef Nicole Brisson, who also keeps next-door eatery Brezza

running smoothly. Under the Pan Con Tomate section, start with pan traditional, slices of toasted bread rubbed with garlic and spread with tomato conserva. There are a number of toppings that can be ordered individually, such as Manchego cheese, ham and boquerones (a type of prepared anchovies) plus preserved ones like stuffed squid, Cantabrian anchovies and marinated mussels. Cheeses and salumi can be ordered individually or in a composed chef’s board. The Mahón cheese here is exceptional and melts in your mouth; order the tres quesos and contrast it to Brie and Manchego.

There are lots of other hot and cold plates. If you prefer cold bites, the hummus has crunchy chickpeas, herbs and a bit of veg atop; roasted beet salad comes with charred oranges; and the chilled seafood pasta includes shrimp, mussel and clams; and a chef’s daily ceviche. Peppadew peppers stuffed with goat cheese and served with arugula are especially delish. Highlights on the hot dishes include the patatas brava, which seems de rigueur for a tapas bar—but it is always my favorite. Here, the potatoes are sliced super thin and stacked together, and drizzled with a saffron aioli. For something with a little more size, the ham and cheese croquettes are stuffed with Iberico ham and manchego cheese, and drizzled with saffron and garlic aiolis. The tempura broccolini is much lighter than you’d expect a fried item to be, and given a little pop with lemon and Calabrian pepper aioli. Bobo chicken and seafood paella is stuffed with Spanish shrimp, mussels, chicken and chorizo; other options include charred octopus and a Piedmontese flat iron steak. Bone marrow for two is served with toasted brioche. Dessert? Oh, yes, you can. Pastry is made in-house, and the Frutta Luna has kiwi, mango and coconut sorbet with kiwi, mango and pineapple chutney; for a spectacular visual, check out the Raspberry, a creation of dark chocolate mousse, raspberry gelee and chocolate cake. It’s so decadent!

Dinner favorites include steak frites with caramelized shallots, leg of lamb with white bean and sausage cassoulet, or escargot with parsley-garlic butter. Be sure to take home some treats from Bouchon’s bakery for your breakfast tomorrow. When it comes to a true, friendly neighborhood French café, look no further than Ohlala French Bistro (702.222.3522) in the neighborhood surrounding Summerlin. Recently celebrating its fifth anniversary serving diners from all over Las Vegas and Henderson, Ohlala is open for lunch, brunch and dinner and nails everyone’s favorite dishes, from rich onion soup topped with melty Gruyère cheese to sole meuniere, pan-seared in brown butter with garlic, parsley, capers and lemon. The beef burger topped with bacon and Brie is a midday marvel, and the vegan herb arborio risotto showcases the kitchen’s stunning versatility. Speaking of favorites, the welcoming Favorite Bistro (702.844.4700) along The Linq Promenade is one of the Strip’s easiest crowd-pleasers in the French genre, serving three meals a day with a focus on comfort food and casual ambiance. It’s impossible to pass on a baguette with

baked Brie, honey and toasted hazelnuts to get the appetite going, and the classic profiteroles are the perfect meal-ender. In between, consider a croque monsieur sandwich with bechamel, a roast beef-and-provolone French dip sandwich, or seared salmon with sautéed asparagus and ideal beurre blanc sauce. There’s plenty of people-watching and fun sights and sounds when you’re dining at that Strip destination, but a whole new relaxing world awaits at neighborhood legend Marche Bacchus (702.804.8008), nestled against the man-made Lake Jacqueline in the lovely Desert Shores community. The experience begins with one of the best wine shops in the city, where you can pick your bottle and have it poured for you while dining on the patio and taking in the views and enjoying the celebrated cuisine that’s always being updated and refreshed. An everyday brunch menu was recently launched, offering everything from a truffled goat cheese Napoleon to Prince Edward Island mussels mariniere. Area15 celebrates its first anniversary of bringing experiential art to the masses BY MATT KELEMEN

Over its first year, Area15 already offered an array of immersive experiences that play with perceptions and stimulate the senses. It’s now added Liftoff, a new outdoor attraction that allows up to 16 people to get high in one session. The ballooning experience provides a view of Las Vegas that can only be had at the

magical mall just west of the Strip, joining Meow Wolf’s Omega Mart, Lost Spirits Distillery and The Beast by Todd English as major draws and giving visitors another reason to return for deeper dives into the multiversal destination. Turn right instead to enter Lost Spirits, an arena-sized distillery and adult amusement park that could have sprung from Willy Wonka’s pure imagination. It might be best to promenade around the bi-level building first and take in the entirety of Area15’s offerings. Easily accessible virtual reality experiences that don’t require substantial time commitments or complicated suits—from flying like a bird to indoor golf—await. English’s Beast Breath Smoke House menu offers dry rub brisket, ribs and a half-pound hot link served with five fiery sauces. Spicy Korean hot dogs and a five-patty cheeseburger called The Kraken provide incentives for a follow-up visit. Head up the main staircase and turn left to go back to the future or right to enter a pair of infinity-oriented installations. Both Museum Fiasco’s Cluster exhibit and Wink World’s walk-through funhouse make use of mirrors, illumination and music to expand and distort audiovisual perception, as reflective surfaces stretch space and strobe effects meddle with motion. The left turn leads to the Emporium Arcade Bar, which resembles an early ’80s recreation room with gloriously rundown pinball machines and vintage arcade games. DJs control the audio at night, but Emporium is open for Skee-Ball sharpening sessions beginning at 2 p.m. Downstairs, Oddwood functions as a center bar and begins serving craft cocktails at noon beneath the canopy of a digital forest. It’s a good place to pause before entering immersive experiences inside The Portal dedicated to Van Gogh and Klimt or hitting Omega Mart and getting lost in surreal wormholes and warrens. Perusing sardonically conceived but legitimate consumer goods (impulse buys at checkout include packs of Doomed Exploration Arctic Madness chewing gum and Healthy Wolf Lonely Hiker Protein Feast dog food) can easily take up an hour of time, but

there are several pseudo-secret passages that lead to Meow Wolf’s alternate dimension. A guided tour of the conspiracy underlying it is available. Prepare to spend hours unraveling the mystery. Liftoff is last on the counterclockwise stroll around Area15, but it literally rises above the rest of the experiences—130 feet to be exact. Once the balloon reaches its summit, the gondola rotates 360 degrees, enabling a one-of-a-kind panoramic view of the Strip and greater Las Vegas. theater. Sure, there are rows and rows of raked seating, but there are also many massive columns that seem to resemble some sort of sci-fi movie set. In each of those columns, connected by catwalks, you’ll find multiple lights. Looking at

the stage from the audience area, you’ll see many tiers of catwalks and multiple floors on the back and in the wings of the stage area. Turn around and you’ll see floors curving around the back walls of the theater, filled with equipment; they are dedicated to sound and lighting. If you head down to the curved edge of the stage, that’s where you’ll really start noticing the difference from a traditional theater. The edge of the stage, called the boardwalk, is several feet wide and looks like wooden planks. During one recent afternoon, Jim Moran, KÀ’s technical director, who is in charge of many of the theater’s systems,

went over some of the more amazing facets of the area, including the sheer size of the pit. Glance over the edge—it’s 50 feet down. Look up—it’s 89 feet. And it seems like there’s something going on at every level (which there is). Moran points out five separate lifts used during performances in different areas of the pit, including one that is directly in front of the edge. It’s frequently been said that the biggest character in KÀ is the Sand Cliff deck, an incredible moving platform that stands nearly vertical during some scenes. And it certainly dominates the scene before you. The deck itself weighs about 50 tons, and is 50 feet long, 25 feet wide and 6 feet deep, and is perched atop a gantry crane. The deck can rotate 360 degrees and tilt in all directions. The hydraulic pistons, which move the stages, are “the longest in the world,” says Moran. There is also a power system built into the deck and lighting. Plus, there are areas which allow performers to appear from out of the stage. Video projection tiles allow different scenes to appear on the surface, from water to flame. It can also react to performers’ movements. During the battle scene, when performers scale the vertical stage, they are actually making use of 80 pegs called rod actuators. Those give the performers handholds that are highly choreo-

graphed, not only when they appear but sliding drawer. And it can come right up also when they disappear. Below the to the edges of the stage.” In 2008, the stage are two of the largest acrobatic Sand Cliff Deck and the Tatami Deck nets in the world and one of the helped KÀ win a Thea Award world’s largest airbags. Depending on the time of day, you might see set pieces being removed or replaced on the Tatami Deck (the Wheel of Death is stored here), or a green cover put on to emulate nature during the forest scene. In another area, you’ll find a giant winch with cables snaking out of it around and behind the stage. “In the forest … the big red (column) is actually moved by this— that’s our biggest winch in the theater. It’s a counterweight system. That assists in moving arbors that are on the other side of the theater,” Moran says. A row of white cabinets may remind you of heating or air-conditioning

systems, but they are actually used to house the server for the computers, which control much of the mechanical aspects of the show, which need to be timed to the absolute second. “So, all the moves of the lifts … everything is in our automation system. And everything is programmed. We don’t just kind of wing

it. Everything has to be programmed,” says Moran. Go further and you’ll find a massive bin, which is used to help filter the beach sand. That sand is actually cork, and it is put through multiple filters every day, which remove any and all metal, and make sure it is exactly the right size. It’s

then moistened. Why? Because it’s not only more comfortable for the artists, but it also keeps down dust, which is important, since KÀ’s systems employ thousands of sensors that might be obscured otherwise. It also keeps a potential fire hazard out of the air, which is also important, as pyrotechnics light up several scenes in KÀ. That cleanliness extends to the entire backstage area. You’ll also find storage areas for different acts throughout upper and lower levels. As Moran says, it’s all about what is needed, and where. For example, in the scene where the nanny nearly drowns, she comes down from the top level of the wing. “They come up here; and this is where they get attached, and load for that act. So, rather than bring the nanny costume up here every day for a specific thing (they store the costumes here) … In fact, they get clipped in. They have a harness with two swivels on it. That particular costume has cutouts.” In every show, the leading lady or man has the backing of an entire cast, and KÀ is no exception. “So during a show we have about 110 backstage, all in all about 135, about 70 artists—a lot of people, and it’s just as choreographed backstage as it is onstage,” says Moran. As you walk backstage, you’ll be struck by the fact that nearly every person is wearing a harness. And in fact, as you walk through the floors, you’ll see many areas where a worker can hook into. And just as the acrobats in the show rehearse their scenes, so, too, do the backstage crew; workers go through extensive training when they join the crew of KÀ; and they’ll go through that training for different areas and different jobs, from 10-14 days. For Moran, who helped open the theater back in 2005, there’s one aspect that impresses him most. “Everybody comes together and works together to make it happen. I mean, all the technical stuff’s amazing and (we) have lots of buttons to push, but really none of it happens without everybody—the artists and technicians, the management—(it) takes a big group to pull this off.”

Widespread Panic brings its classic jam band sound to Vegas When Jerry Garcia died on Aug. 9, 1995, the world stopped spinning for their legions of followers. A new generation of Deadheads had sprung up in the ’90s, and they weren’t ready for the culture that had evolved during the

Drummer Todd Nance was invited to play with them at a 1986 charity event, which would be the first time they used the name inspired by Houser’s anxiety attacks. They set about developing their improvisational sound at parties and clubs, but Panic didn’t go for a Summer of Love sound, and they were distinctively different than the quirky bands in the Athens scene. The Allman Brothers music was in the band’s blood. Panic played anywhere and everywhere, and like the Dead they allowed taping of their shows. By 1991, they were signed by Capricorn Records, the label that discovered the Allmans, and by the time keyboardist John “JoJo” Hermann was enlisted, they had reached the stage where they could join forces with Phish and Blues Traveler for the inaugural H.O.R.D.E tour in 1992. By the end of that first tour, the jam band community had solidified and Widespread Panic graduated to headlining outdoor venues on their own. Houser died in 2002 of pancreatic cancer, and Nance would leave for personal reasons in 2014 (he passed away in 2020). Panic marched on with lead guitarist George McConnell, who would be replaced by Jimmy Herring in 2006. Herring had played with

Widespread Panic is stronger than ever. They tour less in favor of multidate engagements at places like their annual Panic en la Playa in Mexico and the Theater at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas. Elisa Furr captures Celine Dion’s persona in ‘Legends in Concert’ Las Vegas singer Elisa Furr reached a new level of international exposure recently when she won big on the first season of Jimmy Fallon’s Clash of the Cover Bands reality music competition series on the E! Network. Renowned as one of the most impressive Celine Dion tribute artists performing anywhere, Furr then took the perfect position in the new “Legendary Divas” version of Legends in Concert at the Tropicana Las Vegas, where she gets to blow audiences away every night alongside other terrific vocalists honoring the music of Cher, Lady Gaga and Adele. Furr first performed in Legends in 2015, but has actually been part of the local entertainment

community for more than two decades, including a stint as a showgirl in the iconic Jubilee! at Bally’s. What was that spark that inspired you to begin performing the music of Celine Dion? I always say that it found me, I wasn’t looking for it. I was performing in the house band at a cigar lounge at Bally’s, and the people there were always talking and screaming and clapping, because it was that kind of place. But then I would sing (“My Heart Will Go On”) from Titanic, and it would get completely quiet; the first time, people just wouldn’t speak. I’d finish the song, and everybody would put $20 in the tip jar. And at that

time, I had gotten pregnant, so the timing was perfect because when I (wasn’t performing) I put this tribute show together, created the charts, and studied her movements and started buying the costumes, then after the baby came and I did the mommy thing, I started heading out and doing concerts. And I got booked immediately because there aren’t a lot of live-singing Celine tributes. And now you have rejoined the cast of Legends in Concert, certainly where you want to be if you’re a tribute artist in Las Vegas. I had been auditioning for Legends for years before they hired me. I had done a Faith Hill (tribute) before. I was just so green, and so used to being a showgirl and the different ways of that kind of performance. But they gave me a chance and they’re my family now.

Is there extra energy with this “Legendary Divas” show because Celine and Adele were both unable to start their new Las Vegas residency shows as planned? I’m sure that’s (true), but I think more than anything it’s four really strong vocalists who are known for hundreds of hits, artists all considered to be powerhouse vocalists, and the fact that they’re all female is another strength. There are so many factors that make this show special, but, yes, people are going crazy. We’re getting standing, roaring ovations every night. As a veteran performer, what was the Clash of the Cover Bands TV experience like for you? Well, everybody had their challenges during the pandemic, including me. When I finally got there, it had been 18 months

since I sang (with an audience). It was like, is anything going to come out? But it was exhilarating and exciting and terrifying at the same time, and I had no idea I was going to win. I got a standing ovation from (judges) Adam Lambert and Meghan Trainor, so that was an emotional experience, and all positive. It’s such a cool concept for a TV show and it really elevates and enlightens the idea of a tribute artist, which is a big thing in Las Vegas but not necessarily anywhere else. That’s true, unless you live in Vegas or one of the places where this type of entertainment happens, the idea can be confusing. Not everyone understands that this is our entire life’s work, putting your everything into the costumes and studying the music and performances, and what type of skillset goes into this.
