From the Editor Let Us Be Your Guide
Las Vegas is not an easy city to plan a vacation around. Whether you’re here for a few days or a few weeks, there’s just so much to see, do, hear and taste. You can’t possibly take it all in one visit; you have to plan your return visit. There are several ways you could do this: a.) Get in touch with a travel agency; b.) Ask your friends and family who have visited in the past; c.) Start your own “bucket list.” But we’ve got perhaps the simplest solution: You could just start reading Las Vegas Magazine every week. The issue you’re currently holding in your hands is, of course, available to only a select few— Those staying in hotel rooms across the Las Vegas Valley. But here’s something you may not have known: Las Vegas Magazine now has a digital edition available at lasvegasmagazine.com. And here’s the best part: It’s free to subscribe! It’s quick and easy, and once you’re a subscriber, you’ll get updates every week on what’s happening in this vibrant, exciting city. So let’s get you started on squeezing the maximum amount of enjoyment out of your stay! We begin with a wide variety of only-in-Vegas attractions, highlighted by Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay (“Dive Right In,” p. 30). It’s an oasis in the middle of the desert, complete with piranhas, stingrays and, of course, sharks!
But there’s so much more included in this week’s issue, from the romantic gondola rides at The Venetian (“Venice to Vegas,” p. 13) to the adrenaline-fueled thrills of the Big Apple Coaster at New York-New York (“An Exhilarating Excursion,” p. 17). How about a live production? This week’s issue highlights such shows as An Evening With Whitney: The Whitney Houston Hologram Concert at Harrah’s (“It’s So Emotional, Baby,” p. 11), Michael Jackson ONE at Mandalay Bay (“Bad in the Best Way,” p. 13), and Tournament of Kings at Excalibur (“Fare Thee Well,” p. 14). One of the most entertaining shows in Las Vegas is Chippendales at Rio, and in this week’s issue, editor at large Brock Radke got an interview with the show’s newest guest star: Jersey Shore’s Vinny Guadagnino (“Back in a Flash,” p. 32). And what’s a visit to Las Vegas without enjoying a drink or two? In this week’s issue, associate editor Kiko Miyasato rounds up some of the best patio drinking options around (“Kickin’ It Outdoors,” p. 22) and interviews Margaritaville director of operations Jeff Evans, as well as highlighting a cocktail you have to try there ( p. 20). Welcome to Las Vegas! And if it’s your first time reading Las Vegas Magazine, we hope we’ve been a valuable resource—and continue to be one year-round.

Production overflows with great acts If you’re the type to romanticize Las Vegas (which means you’re like me), you’re the perfect audience for Extravaganza—The Las Vegas Spectacular. It’s a celebration of all the elements that make this city legendary, from famous performers and locales to gambling and the showgirl. It’s also one of the most jampacked variety shows you’re likely to see. Extravaganza is a collection of some very talented acts, from roller skaters and motorcyclists to acrobats and plate-spinners. The framework in which they operate concerns a down-on-hisluck hero who takes a one-way bus ticket to Las Vegas and experiences everything the city has to offer—including love. Along the way, he’s

guided by a tap-dancing philosopher who helps move the story forward while providing plenty of good-natured laughs along the way. You’ll visit a ’50s diner, complete with bobbysoxers, a wedding, a visit to downtown Las Vegas and even fly high in the sky with the moon in the background. The show is punctuated with several different styles of music, from the hits of Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra to the sultry sounds of Marilyn Monroe—all courtesy of impersonators who appear via a portable projection screen. The show’s technological components are well used here, including background projections that propel the audience into the desert, up and down a roller coaster and along a canyon.
It all combines for a fantastic framework around which Extravaganza presents us with acts like the skaters who perform death-defying feats on a small, circular stage; acrobats who are hurled into the air during a romantic interlude; a juggler who tosses several hats into the air in succession, always managing to be at the exact spot when they return; crossbow master Silvia Silvia, who displays absolutely pinpoint accuracy in whatever she’s shooting bolts at; and a Michael Jackson impersonator who delivers some thrilling dance moves to “Billie Jean” and “Smooth Criminal.” Best of all? This show is fun for the entire family. –Ken Miller

One Smokin’ Spot As the newest cigar bar on the Las Vegas Strip, Eight Lounge has quickly become a hot spot for cigar lovers, cocktail lovers and people that like to chill at an upscale yet inviting environment. A-list celebs like A-Rod, Michael Jordan and Luke Bryan have already been frequenting the establishment. “Eight is an upscale lounge to get together with friends and enjoy the amenities of a cigar bar and create memories,” said general manager Ian Floranza. Eight Lounge also has star amenities like a humidor packed with coveted and hard-to-find cigars and a huge patio for hanging out. Another bonus is the cocktail program, which offers recipes that pair well with the lounge’s cigar offerings. A great pairing is the El Septimo Bomba Orange cigar with the Smoked Macallan Old-Fashioned (pictured). The cocktail is a blend of Macallan Double Cask 12 Year, demerara syrup, angostura aromatic and angostura orange bitters, smoked with cherrywood or applewood. The Costa Rican cigar has dark, woodsy tones and pairs perfectly with the Old-Fashioned. –Kiko Miyasato

Succulent Cuts While the outside décor of the restaurant might be more subdued, the inside dining room of Hank’s Fine Steaks & Martinis is, in our opinion, one of the most beautiful and romantic rooms in any steakhouse. And, in order to match its look, its flavors must be just as stunning, and they are. Just look at the steak offerings: certified A5 Japanese Kobe, American wagyu, American bison and chateaubriand, rack of lamb from Niman Ranch, and much more. To finish, the crème brûlée or tableside bananas Foster more than satisfy. And the restaurant offers a wickedly good happy hour. –Kiko Miyasato Green Valley Ranch, 702.617.7777
It’s So Emotional, Baby Head straight to An Evening With Whitney: The Whitney Houston Hologram Concert, a new Strip production that has all the energy of a Whitney Houston concert—even though the person singing onstage isn’t really there. Through state-of-the-art technology, Houston appears, along with four live backup dancers and a live band, in various costumes to sing the best songs from her discography—which is to say, some of the

greatest songs from the last 30 years. And when the audience hears songs like “Greatest Love of All,” “I Have Nothing” and “All the Man That I Need,” you swear the genuine article was performing before them—they stand up, raising their hands and dancing. The performer may not be real, but the emotion her music generates definitely is. –Ken Miller Harrah’s, 702.777.2782 or ticketmaster.com

Put on Your Boogie Shoes Tribute act revives the iconic trio In 1978, I was obsessed with two movies: Grease and Saturday Night Fever. I went to see Grease three times (waiting in line what seemed like hours each time), and although I was too young to see Fever, I was struck by two things: Its poster, featuring a mythical-looking John Travolta, striking his now-classic disco pose in a white suit; and the soundtrack, particularly the tracks by the Bees Gees—I had simply not heard anything like it before. To this day, that music still captivates me and takes me back. In other words, I’m the ideal audience for The Australian Bee Gees Show, a tribute to the legendary trio of The Brothers Gibb—Maurice, Robin and Barry, rendered beautifully by Wayne Hosk-

ing, David Scott and Michael Clift, respectively (on the night I attended, James Simpson and Matthew Baldoni filled in as Robin and Barry). They bring back 1978 to brilliant, vivid life, delivering crisp, note-perfect renditions of not only every Fever classic they wrote, either for themselves or other artists—“Stayin’ Alive,” “How Deep Is Your Love,” “Night Fever,” “You Should Be Dancing,” “More Than a Woman,” “If I Can’t Have You” and “Jive Talkin’”—but also the theme to Grease, written by Barry. But that’s only the beginning of the fun on tap. The trio performs nearly 30 songs over the course of 70 minutes, some in their entirety, some in small snippets or as part of medleys.
There’s also a fair amount of humor throughout— Hosking will comment on how good that night’s audience is at singing along (and how he says it every night, but really means it this time), and during a moment when all three men are singing into one microphone, Hosking gets forced to the side so that just two men can sing, and he’s not sure what to do with himself until rejoining his bandmates at the mic. Best of all, the audience is fully encouraged to dance at “Club Mo,” off to the side of the stage. When the disco starts, the theater is transformed into a nightclub—and people like me are transported right back to 1978. –Ken Miller Excalibur, 702.597.7600

The gondolas travel two routes along the Grand Canal, but both indoor and outdoor rides feature costumed gondoliers who serenade passengers. Glide under bridges, pass cafés and shops on your romantic voyage. You can even pop the family aboard for a little cultural education. And for a little extra, check out the Gondolier March, where parades of gondoliers sing as they wind their way to their boats (at 9:50 a.m. and 4:20 p.m.) –Nina King The Venetian, 702.414.4300
During his lifetime, Michael Jackson exuded a childlike wonder, proved infectious for his millions of fans. That sense of wonder pervades Cirque du Soleil’s Michael Jackson ONE at Mandalay Bay. The show is a series of vignettes tied together loosely by four young “misfits” who are pursued by baddies as they attempt to “save” Jackson’s music, rushing in and out of segments, sometimes participating in the activity onstage, from bungee acrobatics during “Beat It” to some hilarious pantomime as Jackson’s glove seemingly comes to life during “Working Day and Night.” Elsewhere, dancers who come to electric life through the use of LED costumes during “Billie Jean” and trampoline artists who appear to defy gravity during “Thriller” to incredibly synchronized dance routines to both “They Don’t Care About Us” and “Smooth Criminal” (And, yes, that famous “lean” makes an appearance during the latter song, and yes, it’s electrifying.) The action climaxes in an amazing hologram sequence, with Jackson apparently appearing alongside the misfits for “Man in the Mirror.” –Ken Miller

Urgent Information So you’re a Foreigner fan? Well, do we have news for you—the arena rock stars are in the midst of an extended run at The Venetian, where you can catch some of their biggest hits. Foreigner started off in 1976 in New York with Mick Jones, Lou Gramm and Ian McDonald, and rapidly grew in popularity, pushing out hit song after hit song for more than 10 years. “Cold as Ice,” Feels Like the First Time,” “Double Vison,” “Hot Blooded,” and “Juke Box Hero” provided the backdrop for a generation of music fans; none of those actually became a No. 1 hit, although they hit every other number. “I Want To Know What Love Is” became the band’s first No. 1 in 1984. Throughout the following years, the band went through numerous personnel changes, with only Jones remaining today, although several reunions have seen different combinations of band members come and go onstage. –Nina King The Venetian, 8 p.m. March 30, April 1-2, 6 & 8-9, starting at $49.95 plus tax and fee. ticketmaster.com

Mind-blowing magician charms crowds If enthusiasm could be transformed into pure energy, Jen Kramer could generate enough from one performance to power a small village. The illusionist, a Yale graduate who’s appeared on Penn & Teller: Fool Us as well as Masters of Illusion and NBC’s Today, wins audiences over with three things: A smile that just won’t quit; corny jokes that will have you rolling your eyes but laughing all the same; and making the impossible possible. I almost guarantee you’ll be shaking your head numerous times during The Magic of Jen Kramer, trying to process what you’ve seen. But don’t linger too long; another mind-bending achievement is on the way.

Some of my particular favorite moments: A seemingly ordinary video Kramer shows the audience of her card-handling skills, one which later turns out to be strangely prophetic at the conclusion of a subsequent card trick; Two wine glasses, two sets of cards and a “magic scarf” (cue the “oohs” and “aahs” Kramer has the audience say as she displays it) that helps create an instantaneous transformation; Four different, distinct-tasting drinks, a blindfold, a lemon slice and an audience volunteer’s tastebuds; Kramer’s version of a game show, complete with three mystery doors, an audience volunteer,
a hundred-dollar bill and a whole lot of audience participation; Three beach balls, a fake Facebook profile and a box that hangs from the ceiling. (For those who think magicians use plants, heads up: Yours truly got picked for this.) In a very pleasing segment, Kramer shows a video that demonstrates her commitment to spreading the joy of magic to other countries. The looks on children’s faces is a joy to watch, and is a reminder that magic really is a universal language. –Ken Miller Westgate Las Vegas, 800.745.3000 Ticketmaster

Meaty Choices It’s surely one of the most difficult choices a beef lover has at a Vegas steakhouse: Which cut to choose? At VooDoo Steak at Rio, the dinner for two would be a great choice. It features a 32-ounce tomahawk with salad or soup, whipped potatoes and asparagus, so you won’t go hungry. You have other options, too, from a 10-ounce filet to an 8-ounce wagyu rib cap. Seafood lovers have always felt welcome at steakhouses, and VooDoo is no exception—and the Fire and Ice starter really excites the senses, with Alaskan king crab, shrimp, oysters, poke shooters, lobster medallions, crab cakes and seared scallops available for two to six people. Dig into steak tartare or braised short rib bruschetta for a lighter appetizer. Chicken marsala, lamb chops and Norwegian king salmon are all popular as well. And the tasting menu features surf and turf, lobster bisque and desserts like cheesecake, among other options. –Nina King Rio, 702.777.7767

Jeff Evans
Giving guests a sense of paradise Jeff Evans landed in Las Vegas in 2006. The Colorado native decided that in order to be the best in the food and beverage industry he needed to be in the best city for it—Las Vegas. His first job was at the Palms, during its heyday. He spent 11 years at that property— opening bars, getting certified as a sommelier and overseeing the fine-dining. Before he left, he was the general manager of restaurants for the property. After Palms, he managed Spago at The Forum Shops at Caesars and, for the past four years, he’s been with Margaritaville at Flamingo, serving as director of operations. After nearly two decades working in Las Vegas, Evans shares two things he’s learned over the course of his career. One: “People come to Vegas for the biggest milestones in their life—bachelor and bachelorette parties, anniversaries, weddings,” he says. “For us, it’s a Wednesday. But for them, it’s the most important time and one they’ll never forget. And I think
that’s so cool, that we take these milestone events and we get to celebrate that with them.” Two: “Hospitality doesn’t have a price tag,” he says. “It doesn’t matter if I’m doing a fivecourse tasting menu that I’ve done in the past or if I’m doing a nachos and cheeseburger, people just want to be taken care of and get good value for what they’re buying, and they want to have an experience.” And, boy, what an experience Evans and his team give guests at Margaritaville. “There’s a lot going on here—30,000 square feet of space, three stories, a retail shop, seven bars,” he says. “But it’s one of the things that drew me here; just the scope of the business. “We want to provide a sense of escapism. We want people to come in here and forget where they are for a little bit. We want them to forget whatever stresses they have. You know that saying—‘Get your toes in the sand,’ … even though we’re not on a beach.” –Kiko Miyasato

Head to the Strip’s newest puff palace, Eight Lounge at Resorts World. Here, the swank patio is spacious, and guests can have the knowledgeable staff pair cigars with specialty cocktails. The whole bar is outdoors so it’s like one huge patio and bonuses include flair bartenders, blackjack tables and live music. Another spot is Beer Park at Paris. The 9,000 square-foot

On the opposite end of the Shops is Mexican-themed Cabo Wabo Cantina. The Red Rocker, Sammy Hagar’s joint offers a nice patio with a bar and some delicious tequila cocktails. Over at New York-New York, hang outside on the Brooklyn Bridge at Nine Fine Irishmen. The large pub has plenty of outdoor seating great for people-watching and enjoying a nice, cold Guinness. Just around the corner at The Park, head
to Beerhaus. This totally chill spot has picnic tables spread across its patio portion and offers tons of board games you can play while enjoying a local beer selection and some pub-style bites. Off-Strip not-to-be-missed patios include Money, Baby! at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas. The upscale sports bar has more than 200 HDTVs and the patio offers comfortable seating to kick back as well as cornhole, lawn games and fire pits. The espresso martini, a drink that’s experiencing a little surge in popularity, is especially good, with Belvedere vodka (distilled in Poland), espresso and vanilla. It’s finished with the classic garnish of coffee beans. There are portion sizes for every appetite here, but sharing is an excellent idea, too, and you can’t get a better start to that than ordering the mezze platter. You get whipped eggplant, whipped ricotta with honey, and white bean dip, along with a selection of crudité and oven-roasted puccia bread. The bread comes out fresh and hot, all puffed up from the oven like a ball, and is exceptional alone or covered in a spread. The entrées range from light options on the brunch menu, including avocado toast and the tasty Green Eggs—soft scrambled

There are several pastas available, like the canestri in vodka sauce, a sometimes mild tomato and cream sauce that’s given a kick here with Calabrian chili. But you can also order cacio e pepe—just simple spaghetti, butter, black pepper and pecorino cheese; or the spaghetti and Manila clams in white wine sauce. Kassi also features several varieties of pizzas, all from that same delicious puccia dough. The breakfast pizza piles scram-

bled eggs, guanciale, provolone, Parmesan and green onions on the crust, and the aroma when it’s delivered to the table is delightful! For dinner, other possibilities include a truffle pizza, with truffle ricotta, mozzarella, Parmesan and pecorino, plus shaved black truffle, and white truffle oils; a soppressata pizza with honey and an insalata version with a variety of lettuce and anchovy vinaigrette. Although dessert during the day might not be your thing, consider Kassi’s panna cotta with vanilla custard, raspberry preserves and whipped cream. It’s light enough that you can handle it easily. But, if dessert during the day is your thing, you will want The Big ’Stache. This monster ice cream sandwich is constructed of pistachio gelato, marshmallow and chocolate. This is built to share, and perfect for pics.

All that action tends to overshadow some truly great barbecue and southern-style plates, including some of the best beef chili available anywhere in Las Vegas. Only the hungry should sign up to take on the Cowboy Burger, topped with pulled pork, pepper jack cheese and Jack Daniels barbecue sauce, and the baby back ribs and apple juice-braised brisket are also big-time menu favorites. Looking for elite Southern fried chicken? Hit Yardbird (702.297.6541) at The Venetian, the Strip specialist for juicy, crispy perfection. Order it with cheddar cheese waffles and bourbon maple syrup or on its own with honey hot sauce. Explore this dish in its various forms off the Strip at the recently expanded Mama Bird Southern Kitchen (702.570.6135) in the Southern Highlands neighborhood, which serves fried chicken sandwiches and tenders topped with macaroni and cheese in addition to great barbecue plates and Texas-style breakfasts; or at the iconic Southern diner Cracker Barrel (702.474.1120) which has locations on Craig Road and Dean Martin Drive (near the Silverton Casino-Hotel). Of course, the Barrel also boasts chicken-fried steak, meatloaf, chicken and dumplings, and sugar-cured country ham on its menu. Another neighborhood favorite is the Black Bear Diner (702.243.3575), headquartered in California but spread around the Vegas valley with three restaurant locations known for serving big breakfasts all day. Steak and eggs or sweetcream pancakes always hit the spot, but this diner has plenty of lunch and dinner dishes that satisfy, including tri-tip French dip sandwiches, roasted turkey dinners and slow-cooked pot roast with savory gravy that tastes like home. When you’re ready to amp things up again—perhaps while the rodeo is in town this year?—it’s time to check in at PBR Rock Bar (702.750.1685), located Stripside at Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood Resort. Whether you’re watching the big game of the day or fueling up before a concert or event, this is the place to play while dining and drinking, thanks to a supercharged cocktail menu and a vast array of draft beers. Pass platters of grilled shrimp in black pepper sauce and tostada steak nachos around the table, but consider keeping the smoked brisket, bacon mac and cheese or T-bone steak with mashed potatoes front and center and all to yourself. –Brock Radke

Jersey Shore reality TV star Vinny Guadagnino is back in Las Vegas, returning to the Chippendales stage at the Rio for this third run as guest host of the iconic male revue through April 10. After a long time away, the show returned to live performances and wild audiences last fall, and “The Keto Guido” is the first guest star to bring back his own unique spark to the sexy, funny production. While he’s been busy filming for TV over the course of the last two years, nothing can replace the feeling of entertaining fans live onstage for this budding performer. How does it feel to be back in Las Vegas, getting onstage at Chippendales again after such a long time away? I had no idea if it was ever going to come back, if the world was ever going to come back like before, or what things would survive and thrive. They didn’t have to call me back and they did, and it’s definitely flattering and an amazing feeling. You recently sold your house in L.A. and you’re back home in New York, so it must be cool to have such a fun reason to get back to the West Coast. Vegas is kind of like a second home. New York pulled me back

again, because my family is there, and I have a lot of business there. But Vegas is perfect because I can do the show, go out to the coast and get my fix, and pop into L.A., and Vegas is so chill. It’s more my speed. L.A. can get a little wild. In Vegas, the Strip is crazy but there’s so many other (things to do) like go hiking and take in all the surrounding nature. I’m excited to ride my bike out there. You’ve been biking and of course you’ve famously been jumping rope on Jersey Shore, which your castmates tease you about. But isn’t it all part of a fitness regimen to keep you in shape for Chippendales? I like to keep in shape for my mental health, too, since it has been a such a stressful time. I picked up a lot of new activities during (the pandemic) like those, and running through the woods, and making a nice meal for myself every night. Staying home was almost like training camp for me, then when the world opened back up, I started to put on weight again. So maybe I have to lock myself down again in order to get back in shape. With the jump rope, it seems like everybody makes fun of what I do at first, but then all of a sudden, it’s

popping. First it was keto, then jump rope. You were working on several different projects before the pandemic, including podcasts and stand-up comedy. What’s the status? I moved to Manhattan specifically so I could work on my comedy and be more immersed in the (environment). I’m doing a little bit of open mic stuff, more underground style. Comedy is not something you just jump into, but I’m getting pretty comfortable and definitely working on it. And I’m hoping to restart a podcast I’ll do in New York, too. I’m hoping I’ll be able to do
some (comedy) while I’m doing Chippendales in Vegas because you know there are plenty of great comedy clubs there. You’re a veteran at this point with Chippendales, but what were your first impressions of the show? I didn’t know what I was getting myself into when I first got here, but I loved it from the beginning. If you sit down for one show, you realize it’s more of an interactive, fun, comedy-type of show where everyone is just having a good time. It definitely is a staple show of Las Vegas and every time I tell people to come, they’ve never had a bad time.

FEW CITIES DO LOBSTER JUSTICE LIKE LAS VEGAS
Surf and turf at One Steakhouse
By KEN MILLER
If you’re visiting Las Vegas, odds are you plan on having lobster at least once. After all, this city has perfected many of the niche food groups that most Americans love (shrimp cocktail perhaps being the most famous), and lobster is right near the top of the list. The only unanswered question for most of you is: Where are you going to have it, and in what form? Therein lies the real challenge, for Las Vegas offers lobster in so many forms it’s nearly impossible to know where to start. Luckily, we here at Las Vegas Magazine have eaten all over the city and have had every conceivable version of this tasty crustacean. So allow us to take you through some of our personal highlights. Let’s start with the absolute classic, one you’ve no doubt had regardless of where you come from: Surf and turf. (Are there three more mouth-watering words when visiting a classic steakhouse?) No more of that frustrating choice of steak or lobster. This is the best of both worlds! One of downtown’s finest restaurants features a fantastic version—Barry’s Downtown Prime at Circa Resort & Casino. This eatery is already one of downtown’s hottest spots, and this dish is no doubt a big part of that, featuring a sautéed 8-ounce filet mignon (medium-rare, please!) and a Maine lobster tail served with roasted garlic aioli and red wine sauce. Another great restaurant, David and Michael Morton’s One Steakhouse at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas, serves up its own killer version of almost the same combo. Fans of One’s former iteration, MB Steakhouse, will have some idea of the treat they’re in for. Next up is the single lobster tail, so appetizing with the meat popping out of the shell, ready to dip into melted butter. Again, you can find this one almost everywhere, but we’d recommend making it part of a meal at Vic & Anthony’s Steakhouse at the Golden Nugget, a wonderful accompaniment to one of the property’s world-class steaks.

Lobster tail at Vic & Anthony’s Steakhouse
Elsewhere on the Strip, you’ll find all sorts of wonderful variations on the lobster tail. One of my personal favorites is the 2 1/2-pound Cantonese lobsters at Catch at Aria. This is a serious dish with serious flavor, with the lobster divided up into succulent bites and served with sake, oyster sauce, scallions and garlic. So amazing! And Harvest at Bellagio, a restaurant that stresses sustainably produced proteins, serves up a stone-oven-roasted Maine lobster with citrus and seaweed butter. Like everything else at Harvest, it’s unforgettable. Then, of course, there’s the lobster roll, a favorite of New Englanders, and no place in Las Vegas does this popular dish better than Lobster ME, which has two outposts in Las Vegas—at Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood Resort and at The Venetian and The Palazzo. Everything is served deli counter-style, and there are

also some other lobster-based delights you’ll want to sample while you’re here: Lobster crab fries, lobster grilled cheese, and a “lobsicle”—a 4-ounce Maine lobster tail on a stick! For a true Vegas moment (especially if money is no object), we highly recommend the “One Pounder,” which is exactly what it sounds like: a full pound of Maine lobster meat. Sure, you’ll probably say that sounds like a lot, but let’s be honest: You’ll eat every bite and love it! And what’s a story about lobster without mentioning the seafood tower? It seems almost inconceivable to experience Las Vegas without indulging in at least one. There are so many great versions of this up and down the Las Vegas Strip, but the version at Bugsy & Meyer’s Steakhouse, a nod to the city’s mobster era at Flamingo, definitely bears mentioning. It’s a terrifically displayed collection of seafood delights, with lobster (appropriately) towering over the rest. Another version that will satiate everyone at the table is the monster version served at Delmonico Steakhouse at The Venetian, piled high with not only lobster tails but oysters, red king crab legs and

head over to Green Valley Ranch Resort in Henderson and to Bottiglia Cucina & Enoteca, where as part of your overall experience, you can enjoy a delicious lobster Benedict—butter-poached lobster, Parmesan creamed spinach and spiced hollandaise sauce.
Another option we see popping up on more and more menus is lobster mac and cheese. Needless to say, this is one menu item we always order when we see it, for every restaurant tackles this item differently. We’ve yet to have one we weren’t crazy about. We’d start with the version at VooDoo Steakhouse at Rio, as much for the side dish itself as for the ridiculously cool views from 50 floors up. How about salads? There’s a splendid lobster salad at Estiatorio Milos at The Venetian. This Greek restaurant celebrates the sea’s bounty, and this is one of the restaurant’s most popular offerings. And what’s a salad without a soup? Again, there are plenty of lobster bisques to sample up and down the Strip, but we’re seriously partial to the one created by Top Chef Tom Colicchio at his Craftsteak restaurant at MGM Grand. Flavored with tarragon, it’s so creamy and decadent. Finally, taco fans can rejoice that Nobu at Caesars Palace has a seriously ampedup version. Now go get your lobster on!

Portugal. The Man and alt-J play with many different styles As of mid-February, with weeks to go before the start of their co-headlining tour that stops at The Theater at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas on Sunday night, the members of alt-J and Portugal. The Man had yet to meet. The bands are both on Atlantic Records, are arguably the preeminent practitioners of art pop on their respective sides of the Atlantic Ocean and chose band names that beg explanation as well as slightly extra attention to punctuation and capitalization. The latter is a small thing to ask considering the attention both bands pay to composition and recording. Their baroque

pop and rock foundations are sympathetic to a spectrum of musical styles, with England’s alt-J layering vocal harmonies and experimenting with effects while Portland’s Portugal finding the perfect sonic space to inhabit where indie rock, modern dance-pop, and psychedelia meet. What alt-J keyboardist Gus Unger-Hamilton refers to as a “two-month long blind date” brings together two complementary acts who were both practically blindsided by success but retained clear creative visions afterward. As Portugal bassist Zach Carothers indicated during a Feb. 17 interview with Unger-Hamilton for online publication Consequence, fans tend to love both bands. Portugal. The Man has a slightly longer history. Carothers and multi-instrumentalist John Gourley began making music together as high-school students in Wasilla, Alaska, during Sarah Palin’s second term as mayor. By 2004, they had formed Portugal. The Man, expanded it to a quintet and relocated to Portland where they quickly set about recording demos and arranging tours. They released their eccentric, eclectic debut album Waiter: “You Vultures!” through Fearless Records in 2006. One year later, alt-J formed at Leeds University, taking the name from a PC keyboard command for a triangle symbol. It would become a trio when guitarist/bassist Gwilym
Sainsbury left in 2014 but began making music in their dorm rooms as a quartet featuring art majors Joe Newman on vocals and guitar and Thom Green on drums, and literature-focused Unger-Hamilton. Debut album An Awesome Wave demonstrated a mastery of layering and pastiche, with a palette of music influences from acoustic and analog to amplified and digitized. Tracks such as “Breezeblocks” and “Tessellate” garnered enough attention and acclaim to earn alt-J a prestigious Mercury Prize. Latest album The Dream shows more progression in an avant-garde direction, with innovations in combining vocals and instruments with amps and effects leading to adventurous sounds and iconoclastic songs. Portugal just released latest single “What, Me Worry?,” an homage to Mad magazine mascot Alfred E. Neuman. It’s imbued with the spirit that fired up Portugal’s 2017 monster hit “Feel It Still” but feels completely fresh, testifying to Portugal’s ongoing evolution and penchant for not taking things too seriously. Neither Portugal. The Man or alt-J are likely to lead with egos when deciding who plays first. It’s more likely they’ll make guest appearances during each other’s sets than attempt to blow each other off the stage. That quest belongs to Los Angeles trio Cherry Glazerr, which opens the Virgin concert show as special guest.

Staging the bedroom is a key component of selling your home You’ve made the decision to sell your home. But are you confident that it will sell quickly once prospective buyers get a look at the interior? If not, that’s where Stately Home Staging comes in. The Las Vegas-based company specializes in making areas of your home pop, and this week’s installment focuses on one

of the most important: The bedroom. This issue, Las Vegas Magazine’s Ken Miller interviewed Heidi Carlsen, lead interior designer with Stately Home Staging, to get some answers that will hopefully help you make a more informed decision when you are selling your property.
Why is the bedroom so important to stage when selling a home? The bedroom is typically one of the top priorities for homeowners because there’s so much time spent in the bedroom. Many people look at bedrooms, especially the primary bedroom, as a sanctuary—a place where you’re able to step

away, relax and unwind from your day. I’ve found that plenty of home sellers are focused on staging a bedroom because it’s easy for potential homebuyers to overthink how they’ll fit a kingsize bed, or generally lay out the space. Often, doorways and windows act as visual blockers, and many times it can be difficult for people to come up with functional ways to arrange their bedroom furniture. It’s the job of a good home-staging expert to solve for those hurdles and show how effective, inviting or cozy a space can really be. What are the most important things to remember in staging the bedroom? It’s essential to keep it super clean, very simple. And no clutter! Typically, a primary bedroom should be staged slightly more sophisticated, so that people can really visualize themselves living in the space. I always go as symmetrical as possible, which tends to be very appealing to the eye. For instance, placing nightstands on each side with matching lamps helps keep everything clean and simple. Always with every other room, try and use as much natural light as possible. And if that’s not available, lamps can really soften up a space. Use of mirrors can always make a space feel larger, and adding greenery (like trees or large botanicals) into the room can make the space feel more welcoming. What kind of design facets are important to consider in the bedroom apart from other areas of a house? Design-wise, continue to consider this space a homeowner’s refuge. I advise using softer colors and a lot of neutrals in mind. It’s a good idea to typically not go over the top with bright colors, just because you’ll want to provide a feeling of relaxation. What type of trends do you anticipate for the rest of 2022? Apart from the staging business, there are a few interior design choices that I don’t see going anywhere. The use of wallpaper, or 3D accent walls that sit behind the bed space, will most likely continue to be popular this year. There’s a big trend right now with Neotenic Design, which was defined in 2019. Popularized in artistic design circles, the style uses juvenile features with soft edges and inorganic shapes.
