NOTES
From the Editor An Exciting Week
Every year, Vegas seems to host more and more events, including awards shows. This year, our city got to host the GRAMMY Awards, the music industry’s most prestigious celebration of the year. This joins a growing list of awards shows we now host, including the Billboard Awards and Country Music Awards, and with these shows come an abundance of stars, some of whom currently perform in Las Vegas! This year’s festivities are being hosted by Trevor Noah, host of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show and one of the country’s top comedic minds. He talked to Las Vegas Magazine’s editor at large Brock Radke about what hosting the show means to him and his upcoming projects (“Let the Music Play,” p. 30). As exciting as the GRAMMY Awards are, there’s plenty more exciting news to share with our readers this week: • Pool season is here! That’s right—get dressed for warmer temperatures, grab a cocktail and get ready to enjoy some serious pool-based fun on the Las Vegas Strip. Our associate editor Kiko Miyasato has collected some of the best spots to reserve a cabana, daybed or bungalow (“Dive Into Daylife,” p. 34). • One of the Strip’s longest-running adult revues, “X” Burlesque at Flamingo, celebrates its 20th anniversary! Writer Matt
Kelemen introduces you to some of the special people and moments in the show (“Creating Connections,” p. 32). • One of the Strip’s coolest restaurants, Aureole at Mandalay Bay, has reopened! What makes it so memorable? Check out this week’s Friends With Benefits feature with Soraia Millani, an wine angel at the venue’s much-Instagrammed wine tower ( p. 20). And the next time you reserve a table there, make sure to say hello to Millani—she’d love to meet you! Elsewhere in this week’s issue, you’ll find plenty to keep you busy during your stay here. One of the biggest boy bands of all time, Backstreet Boys, performs at Caesars Palace for the first time (“Bring the Band to Vegas,” p. 13), while big production shows like Mystère at Treasure Island (“Flipping Incredible,” p. 10), America’s Got Talent Las Vegas Live at Luxor (“Perfect Presentations,” p. 16) and Magic Mike Live Las Vegas at Sahara (“Sizzling Spectacle,” p. 14) will have you on your feet. Don’t forget to check out one of our city’s premier attractions, from the FLY LINQ Zipline at The Linq Promenade (“Whiz on By,” p. 14) to Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition at Luxor (“History’s Mysteries,” p. 11). But don’t stop there—your exciting Vegas experience is just beginning.

All the Right Moves It’s nice to know that while Las Vegas is a city in a major period of transition, some things will never change. One of the Strip’s long-standing traditions has been the topless show, and it continues with great success at Fantasy, a sexy, seductive combination of athleticism, beauty, humor and music.
Host Lorena Peril keeps the proceedings lively, occasionally throwing in a song that shows off her incredible voice. But this show is really all about the lovely ladies onstage, who take audiences through a wide variety of dance styles, with some of the greatest hits of all time playing on the soundtrack. There’s
also an acrobatic interlude that’s as enticing as it is thrilling. Laughs come midway through courtesy of fearless comedian Shayma Tash, who might just grab an audience member’s handbag and rummage through it (no joke!). –Ken Miller Luxor, 18+, 702.777.7776

Flipping Incredible
The original Cirque production continues to impress Cirque du Soleil’s original production, Mystère, (it opened in 1993, changing the face of Las Vegas entertainment forever) has lost none of its appeal or energy. As you walk into the theater, don’t be surprised if, once you’ve given your ticket to the attendant, you find yourself in the spotlight—literally. A clown, who wanders through the theater before the show starts, delights in pranking random audience members—maybe you! Maybe you’ll be directed to the wrong seat; or maybe you’ll take your seat and suddenly have popcorn spilled all over you. But whether it’s you or someone else, you’ll be laughing almost immediately, and you quickly become aware how much fun this show is going to be.

And Mystère never disappoints in the fun factor department, from the oversized baby looking for his “Papa” (he finds him, by the way, and again, you could be “Papa,” depending on where you’re sitting) to the reappearance of the clown throughout the performance, performing magic tricks and generally messing around with the other performers. It’s a very loose framework around which Cirque has assembled some of the greatest athletes in the world, performing feats that will have you rethinking that Crossfit program. You’ll wonder if acrobats are defying gravity as they ascend poles effortlessly, then slide down, stopping themselves just before they hit the ground; as two strongmen hoist each other into
impossible positions while slowly spinning on a raised stage. You’ll be holding your breath, as if your concentration will give them that bit of extra strength; and your adrenaline will be pumping as you watch acrobats propel each other up in the air on a see-saw, culminating in some truly dizzying heights. With the closure of Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus in 2017, it’s getting harder to find classic circus performances. Luckily, Mystère is helping to keep these skills front and center for future generations. A thrilling trapeze routine has “dueling” aerialists mirroring one another as they fly from bar to bar, never missing a beat. Other aerialist acts high over the audience range from beautiful to gasp-inducing. –Ken Miller

Feel the Beat Come on, admit it—when “Dancing in the Streets” comes on the radio, you’re pretty much rocking out in your car, singing out loud and not giving a hoot about the outside world. That’s the magic of Motown: It transports you to a happy place that you never want to leave. And Soul of Motown, a tribute to the music that changed everything, will have you rocking out from start to finish. If it’s good enough for the Hollywood and L.A. elite, then it’s good enough for … The first location outside of California’s Beverly Hills and Santa Monica, Wally’s Wine & Spirits opened shop at Resorts World Las Vegas to great fanfare. Part restaurant and part wine-and-spirits retail store, Wally’s lets guests peruse thousands of labels of wines, spirits and beers. Guests can also purchase specialty food items to take back home. Another cool thing about Wally’s is you can purchase that bottle and pop it open at the restaurant portion to enjoy immediately. Pair that sip with an impressive menu of charcuterie offerings. Besides several brands of caviar, choose from meats like beef, pork, boar and duck. Cheese selections cover countries around the world like France, Italy, Spain, Holland, England and back to the U.S. with states like Wisconsin and New York. Wally’s offers breakfast, lunch and dinner, and vegetarians will delight in delicious non-meat recipes; meat eaters will love the truffle Bolognese, lamb chops and wagyu NY steak frites. –Kiko Miyasato
History’s Mysteries You’ve seen James Cameron’s blockbuster movie about it. And if you want to look inside the stories of the real people involved (sorry, Jack and Rose never existed), then head to Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition. Partly museum and partly interactive experience, this attraction is absorbing to the point of distraction. No detail is left out: the design of the ship (and the efforts to get it built); re-creations of cabins; profiles of some of the famous people who stayed in

those cabins; a simulation of the deck of the ship on the fateful night it sank, complete with accurate air temperature; and a large piece of ice you can touch to give you an idea of just how cold it was that night. Perhaps the most striking part of Titanic is The Big Piece, a huge section of the hull. Laughter Aplenty Comic’s jokes always hit home
Pop culture icon and longtime Las Vegas favorite comedian Scott Thompson, or, as you may know him, Carrot Top, is currently observing his 17th year as a headliner at Luxor, his 16th anniversary having taken place during the pandemic pause. While a nonstop barrage of visual jokes is his trademark, the stage show has evolved. “I had a friend last week who came and said, ‘I don’t think you should be called a prop comic anymore,” says Thompson in an interview with Las Vegas Magazine. “There’s still props in the shows, but there’s a lot more storytelling—it’s hard to describe—or even stand-up.” The screen behind him that once showed the Carrot Top logo throughout the set is now used

to complement his delivery with visual punchlines, often media-driven, for at least one-third to one-half of the show. One bit involves images from a Las Vegas Magazine shoot of Carrot Top in a Varvatos suit with his hair relaxed, his trademark curls straightened out. “Whenever we have a real windy day, I always come onstage and say, ‘What a beautiful day. Look at the beautiful weather,’ and they show a clip of me where they put like 10 leaf blowers on me outside. It’s fun. I’m trying to smoke a cigarette, and then it cuts to, ‘My hair was straight this morning,’ then I put those pictures that you did with the straight hair, and it kills. It always kills.”
Thompson’s prop jokes are often topical and may remain in the set as long as they continue to get laughs. A giant, translucent, impenetrable cell phone case that prevents tweeting may show up whenever Donald Trump trends. A clip of Norm Macdonald chiding Carrot Top’s infamous foray into film, Chairman of the Board, on Late Night With Conan O’ Brien made it to the screen after Macdonald’s passing, transformed into a self-deprecating tribute. “There’s always props being built,” says Thompson. “There’s a shelf life, but I can always retool it and make it work.” And he kills. He always kills. –Matt Kelemen Luxor, 702.262.4400

Bring the Band to Vegas The Backstreet Boys are resuming their DNA World Tour where they left off in 2020, starting with a four-show reset at The Colosseum that leads into the 29th anniversary of cousins Brian Littrell and Kevin Richardson joining the group. Howie Dorough, who co-founded BSB with AJ McLean in 1993, dubbed the Caesars Palace dates as “Backstreet Boys 2.0” with “all the greatest hits and a bunch of bells and whistles” during a February interview with Entertainment Tonight. The most pivotal act in boy band history has the daunting task of re-imagining a residency experience born in 2017. The Backstreet Boys: Larger Than Life shows helped demonstrate that the era of Britney, Christina, NSYNC and Boyz II Men had become a dominant facet of Vegas entertainment. The current buzz concerns who will show up at whose residency. Nick Carter, who cited having to work off some pandemic pounds leading up to the this engagement, teased to ET that Spears would be a welcome guest, and set boy-bandita hearts fluttering when he raised the possibility of a Joey Fatone or Lance Bass moment onstage. –Matt Kelemen Caesars Palace, 8 p.m. April 8-9 & 15-16, starting at $80 plus tax and fee. ticketmaster.com

Magic for All Ages Illusionist Mat Franco is the perfect balance of young enough and old enough: • Old enough to have mastered one of the hardest sleight-of-hand tricks: Making cards appear as if from thin air, and not just one or two cards, but entire decks. • Young enough that he appeals to all ages, including the kids who flock to his performances with their parents. By far, the most engaging bits are those that involve the audience, and Franco knows this; in fact, he takes great care to take note of everything revealed during a show. Why? Perfect Presentations
‘America’s Got Talent Las Vegas Live’ is an incredible show When illusionist Lèa Kyle first appeared on Season 16 of America’s Got Talent, she revealed her dream was to have her own show in Las Vegas. The French quick-change artist proceeded to saunter-strut behind a small black curtain and in a nanosecond revealed her all-black outfit was now a glittery turquoise mini-dress. That got a “Whoa!” from Howie Mandel and caused Heidi Klum’s eyes to pop open wide. Revealing anything else about Kyle’s act would be spoiling it for the audiences attending America’s Got Talent Las Vegas Live, but her Vegas ambitions are definitely becoming a reality. Mandel said she was the best of many quick-change artists that have appeared on AGT. Simon Cowell cited her “awesome presentation,” and Klum (a

major influence in Kyle’s life) suggested she go right to the live shows. That’s exactly what she did in January, joining a cast of varied acts all sharing in that one aspect that caused them to rise about the competition: presentation. From singers Kodi Lee and Jimmie Herrod to shadow-performance group The Silhouettes and high-tech, neon-enhanced dance troupe Light Balance, it’s not so much what the entertainers do but how they do it that distinguishes them. Tying them all together in a classic variety show format makes America’s Got Talent Las Vegas Live pound-for-pound the most talent-packed show on the Strip. Preacher Lawson, AGT’s stand-out stand-up comedian from sea-
son 12, hosts the show and presents AGT alumni such as mentalists The Clairvoyants, magician Dustin Tavella, knife-throwing twosome Deadly Games and mondo circus act Duo Transcend. The duo of Mandel and Cowell were in the audience for a recent Saturday-night performance. They showed appreciation to cast, crew, Strip officials and executives from MGM and AGT, and received keys to the Las Vegas Strip as March 12 was deemed “America’s Got Talent Las Vegas LIVE Day.” “This is more mind-blowing than the TV show because this is the dream,” Mandel said. “This is real and this is the best show in Vegas.” Come see for yourself. –Matt Kelemen Luxor, agtvegaslive.com

Jalles Franca is a performer who has to be seen to be believed. His impersonation of Michael Jackson is nothing less than amazing at MJ Live, one of the best tribute acts on the Las Vegas Strip, and one that will have you out of your seat and dancing along to some of the greatest pop music of all time. Franca does it all in this show—the moves, the look, the voice, whether singing or talking to the audience. He’s accompanied by a keyboardist, a guitarist and a drummer, and his pitch-perfect versions of “She’s Out of My Life,” “Beat It” and “Bad” will have your jaw on the floor. Better yet are the ensemble dance numbers to such classics as “Thriller,” “Billie Jean” and, especially, “Smooth Criminal,” a number that just slays with its combination of choreography and special effects (including, yes, that legendary Jackson lean). For fans of the younger Jackson, good news—there’s also a tribute to The Jackson 5, complete with Afro wigs, early ’70s fashions and lots of nostalgia. Through every number, Franca’s energy is astounding; at times, it’s really as if the spirit of The Gloved One is taking him over. –Ken Miller

Soraia Millani
A unique career takes her to the top Soraia Millani is an angel, soaring through the air, bringing down gifts for people. More specifically, Millani is a wine angel for Aureole restaurant at Mandalay Bay. “A lot of people get surprised about what I do for the job,” she says. “Normally I have to show people pictures of what I do.” What exactly is a wine angel? The Brazilian native straps into a harness and floats up and down a seven-level wine tower fetching bottles that guests order; a specially made bag she uses can hold up to 12 bottles at a time. The tower itself can hold up to 10,000 bottles of red wine. (White wine and champagne are stored in the back of the restaurant, but even if you don’t order red wine, Millani will still float up and down the tower for you so you can get
the full experience.) On a busy night, Millani can scale the tower every five minutes. Before becoming an angel, Millani worked as a cocktail server at nightclubs including XS at Wynn and Chateau at Paris. Five years ago she joined Aureole, taking only about a week to learn the role of the wine angel. Not fearing heights and having a gymnastics background helped her excel at the role, she says. “My favorite part about working here is I enjoy being a part of people’s unique moments in their life,” Millani says. “A lot of people propose here. I’ve held a sign “Will you marry me?” inside the wine tower and the man had his girlfriend look up. It’s a very romantic place, so we get the chance to be a part of people’s special moments. It’s very exciting.” –Kiko Miyasato

Celebrate National Beer Day this week On the night of April 6, 1933, people gathered outside breweries and bars across the country, waiting for the sun to rise on April 7. On that day, the Cullen-Harrison Act went into effect, making the sale of low-alcohol beer legal once again. After more than 13 years of Prohibition, citizens across the country indulged in more than 1 million barrels of beer. And in 2009, National Beer Day recognized that event. In honor of the holiday, check out some beer hot spots across the city on April 7. Cabo Wabo Cantina at Miracle Mile Shops will offer half-off draft beer, including Dos Equis, Estrella Jalisco and Sammy’s Red Head, from 3-5 p.m. For nondraft beer, head to AmeriCAN Beer & Cocktails at The Linq Promenade. Twin Creeks Steakhouse excels at a classic experience It’s hard to not be impressed at the level of detail you encounter at Twin Creeks Steakhouse at the Silverton, not only in décor but in the dish presentation and service. As far as neighborhood steakhouses go, this is one of the better experiences you’ll find in the entire Las Vegas Valley. The entire dining room has a welcoming vibe, with red and greens dominating. satisfying finish, especially when piled high on Parmesan lavash. You’ll also want to try at least one of the salads here, whether it’s the traditional baby wedge, highlighted by applewood smoked bacon, candied pecans and shaved red onion, or the burrata caprese, fresh and light with arugula, heirloom tomatoes and house-made cheese. Main courses range from meat-lover specials like a 40-ounce Creekstone Farms tomahawk for two (this absolutely has to be paired with the brandy peppercorn sauce) to vegan options like a pan-seared cauliflower steak, served with wild mushroom risotto, a port wine reduction and pistachio vinaigrette. For seafood fans, there’s a terrific scallops dish, served with butternut squash risotto, crispy prosciutto and apple butter, and fans of Italian will want to order the pappardelle Bolognese, featuring hand-cut pappardelle, beef ragu, roasted tomatoes and burrata cream. Whatever you choose, make sure at least one of your side dishes includes the au gratin potatoes, made with russet potatoes, housemade béchamel, white cheddar, Parmesan cheese and chives. So creamy, so rich—you may order two! Other highlights include mac and cheese loaded with bacon and roasted poblano peppers, broccolini with garlic Parmesan and Brussel sprouts, fried and served with bacon and a pomegranate reduction. Almost all desserts are made in-house, with classics like crème brulee, a chef’s trio of sorbets, and a deconstructed lemon curd, showing you all the elements used in a way that lets you enjoy each individually, if you prefer. The tiramisu is presented in a martini glass and is the perfect ratio of amaretto to the mascarpone-espresso cream.

With a third restaurant set to open soon at Paris, Nobu could be described as the standard-bearer for sushi in the city, currently serving from its original local restaurant at the new Virgin Hotels Las Vegas (702.693.5090), as well as the flagship destination at the base of the Nobu Hotel tower at Caesars Palace (702.731.7110). This iconic brand is also recognized for its signature hot dishes, including miso black cod, sea bass in black bean sauce and beef tobanyaki. You also can’t go wrong with the omakase tasting menu, where the chef takes control of the experience. But these restaurants remain among the best places to enjoy simple sushi classics, whether it’s delicate pieces of nigiri salmon belly or Japanese red snapper, or maki rolls loaded with spicy scallops or tuna with asparagus. If Nobu Matsuhisa laid the groundwork for Japanese food in America, Masaharu Morimoto took the baton and kept running. The Iron Chef legend’s restaurant Morimoto Las Vegas at MGM Grand (702.891.3001) serves some truly regal sushi creations, including pristine o-toro fatty tuna, freshwater eel, a deep-fried softshell crab roll with avocado and scallion, and Japanese wagyu beef served in sashimi or nigiri form. Another Strip sushi palace can be found at Bellagio, the long-established Yellowtail (702.730.9300). Once known as an energetic restaurant and lounge priming visitors for a night at the clubs, Yellowtail maintains those vibes while specializing in innovative dishes such as the tuna pizza with truffle oil, seared albacore with crispy shiitake mushrooms, lobster carpaccio and grilled eggplant skewers. This kitchen’s twist on sushi rolls is all fun, from the Happa roll with its Cajun-spiced albacore and spicy aioli to the Popping Spicy Crab creation with cucumber, asparagus, and Pop Rocks. Just like you, Las Vegas residents like to stick to their favorite local spots, and no restaurant fits that label like Soho Japanese Restaurant (702.776.7778), where veteran chef John Chien Lee has built a reputation for the best quality fish and stellar service. Take a tour of his top-selling dishes: Kumamoto oysters with uni and ikura, bluefin tuna paired with foie gras, cured salmon with a poached quail egg, and pan seared scallops. Be sure to order a couple of these to go with your favorite raw fish selections. –Brock Radke

GRAMMY Awards show host Trevor Noah is excited about the future The 64th annual GRAMMY Awards is being held for the first time in Las Vegas on April 3, bringing music’s biggest night to the south Strip at MGM Grand Garden Arena. Making the landmark event even more special is the fact that Trevor Noah, the awardwinning comedian, writer and host of TV’s seminal satirical program The Daily Show With Trevor Noah, has returned as host after guiding the GRAMMYs last year under intense pandemic restrictions. This time around, he’s ready to cut loose, just as everyone should when in Las Vegas.
Definitely! I can’t wait to share the electricity of the night with 15,000 people live. It’s going to be energizing and so insane. We’ve spent two years as a society kept away from each other, and as we move back to normal these types of moments are a great way to celebrate.
How could it not? Vegas seems like the perfect fit for the GRAMMYs. Everyone goes to Vegas to party and enjoy the best performers in the world, and now on one night everyone shares the same stage. It’s going to feel special.
It’s going to be interesting because of how much has changed in the four years since. I have no expectations because I’ve never been, but I do know I’m rounding out my experiences in life—GRAMMYs in Vegas to start the month, White House Correspondents’ Dinner in D.C. to end the month.
It’s important for me because I’ve always seen myself as a global citizen. I’ve been shaped by so many different peoples and cultures, and so traveling and learning whilst also performing is such a soul-nourishing way for me to live life. I change a lot of my material depending on the country I’m in because there are often so many topics to delve into. It’s honestly my greatest joy.
Well, just like the GRAMMYs, we’re excited to be working towards a full live audience and starting a new chapter on a familiar road. We’ll be incorporating everything we’ve learned from the “hybrid” format into everything we know from doing it old school. It’s going to be fresh and fun. I can’t wait.

There is a number in “X” Burlesque that creates a legacy loop of sorts when five of the six dancers onstage for the night line up and turn their backsides to the audience. A large prop picture frame turns the scene into a sexy living photo. It’s an homage to an iconic image of Crazy Girls, a topless production that opened at the Riviera in 1987 and once employed “X” Burlesque co-creator Angela Stabile. “My favorite thing is to be able to connect with an audience and pull them into our world, because that is what our show is,” says Giron. “It’s a sexy show and it’s topless, and I love using the stage to pull people in.” The “X” dancers pull people in, dazzle with dance moves, flip hair and flirt, saunter through the audience and spin on a stripper pole in the center of the showroom floor. They appear flawless in physical movement and appearance, don thematic costumes such as flight attendant uniforms during Lenny
Kravitz’s “Fly Away,” and at one point pull an audience member onstage for a semi-private dance. Choreographer Anthony Cardella says there are three new numbers scheduled to be included. “We’re adding a hip-hop number, ‘Tap In’ by Saweetie. We have a new bed number by Adele, and we have a new solo by Etta James, ‘I Just Want to Make Love to You.’ We usually change out once a year, but we didn’t last year due to the pandemic. This year, because of the 20th anniversary, we decided it was time to change up.”
The show feels fresh in its current state, due to both the delivery of the dancers and dedication to precision among cast and crew. Giron, who came to “X” Burlesque after getting her start in Crazy Girls right after high school, says she didn’t have dancing topless in mind when she was growing up. “Then you meet, and you get to know these incredible women, and realize they are talented, strong, independent and smart. … I love being onstage. It’s my favorite thing.”

Sure, the Las Vegas Strip is back, and you can gamble to your heart’s (and wallet’s) content, you can go on a shopping spree, you can eat at some of the world’s finest restaurants and see some of the greatest entertainers on the planet—often all in the same day! These experiences are quintessential Vegas musts and definitely contribute to a joyful and fulfilling visit. But what if that’s not enough? You may not know it, but away from the Strip, Vegas is a mini-paradise for the everyday adventurer, whether you’re venturing out during those brutal, triple-digit temperatures or during the current cooler months. There are mountains to climb, trails to explore, a man-made lake to admire and nature to observe. Of course, we fully expect that you’ll be taking advantage of all the Strip has to offer. That’s why you’re here! But if you really want to stretch your legs and see a side of the Southwest you’ve never seen before, take a chance and do something new—call that Uber or Lyft, head to REI for some supplies, and get off the grid. You may never want to leave!
Start off your morning by exploring one of the many hiking trails in Las Vegas. Near Lake Mead, right outside of Boulder City, is the Historic Railroad Trail (nps.gov), an easy 7.5-mile trek (round trip) that follows the old railway that transported machinery and supplies to Hoover Dam during its construction. Along the path, you’ll pass through five massive tunnels, which helps measure the scope of the dam’s construction and
Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve
Grand Canyon
shows how the project was a major feat of engineering. Another great option for easy hiking trails is Lone Mountain Park. There’s a flat-ground desert trail that loops around the tiny mountain and offers great views of the city. But if you’d like to make that view even better, climb to the mountain’s peak. If you decide to check out either of those hiking areas, remember that the weather may reach warmer digits, so bring a lot of water and don’t forget your sunscreen. If
you’d rather not deal with any heat, however, Mount Charleston is a much cooler refuge, with temperatures nearly 20 degrees lower than in the valley. It’s home to the popular Mary Jane Falls and Cathedral Rock trails, to name a few, which are a little tougher and rockier than the previously mentioned trails, but the crisp mountain air and stunning scenery—as well as seeing a side of Las Vegas that you probably didn’t know existed— will make it all worth it.
If hiking doesn’t appeal to you, but you still want to observe and enjoy nature, that’s not a problem. The Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve (cityofhenderson.com) is a tranquil place to view resident birds like roadrunners and verdin, as well as nesting American avocets and black-necked stilts. Go to Floyd Lamb State Park in the north and you might wonder if you’re still in Las Vegas. The small oasis has lush vegetation, a quaint ranch and a few fishing ponds filled with ducks and geese—you’ll even come across a few peacocks. But if you want to see some nature without leaving your car, take a drive along the 13-mile scenic loop at Red Rock

Canyon (redrockcanyonlv.org), where you’ll be able to view unique red rock formations and wide-open desert landscapes. If you feel compelled to leave the cool air-conditioning of your car, however, there are several observation points and overlooks where you can walk around and further explore the canyon. In speaking of canyons, while it’s not Vegas, the Grand Canyon is too close to not be part of a Southern Nevada experience. If you don’t know where to start, try Grand Canyon West (grandcanyonwest.com). They offer a one-stop shop of ways to view the Grand Canyon and its surrounding areas, such as walking along the glass-paneled Skywalk or taking a helicopter tour. There’s also a convenient shuttle service that circulates through Guano Point, Eagle Point and Hualapai Ranch, allowing you to explore the West Rim at your own pace.
What’s great about the desert is daytime temperatures can still warm the body so visitors have the opportunity to enjoy some of Vegas’ watery attractions. Take a short drive off the Strip to Lake Las Vegas for the popular Lake Las Vegas Water Sports

(lakelasvegaswatersports.com). It’s the total package for fun on the water, with electric boats, kayaks and paddle boards available for rent (reservations highly recommended). Or head a little farther down the road and you’ll find Lake Mead (nps.gov). It’s one of the nation’s largest man-made lakes, so there’s a lot to explore. Entry to the lake allows you to access relaxing beach areas, including Boul-
der Beach, and its several marinas, like Lake Mead Marina and Lake Mead Boat Harbor, where you can rent pontoon boats, sports boats and WaveRunners through Boating Lake Mead (boatinglakemead.com). While the Strip in Strip House might be misconstrued to represent the pinups, it’s in actuality the New York strip steak from which the restaurant takes its name. The New York strip is a behemoth, so if you’re looking for a more modest cut, then the filet mignon is probably the way to go. You can order
from a trio of house-made sauces—the rich Bordelaise, peppery au poivre and or creamy béarnaise—but the rustic cuts hardly need any outside adornment. And for dessert, the baked Alaska is a guaranteed hit, with an eyecatching presentation. –Las Vegas Magazine Staff
