NOTES

From the Editor Fun, Fun, Fun!

How much fun can you have during a typical week in Las Vegas? You may never be able to satisfactorily answer that question, but one thing is for sure: You’ll never stop trying! And this week, we’ve packed Las Vegas Magazine with so much enjoyment, you may need to schedule more than one return trip to fit everything in. Live entertainment is back in a big way on the Strip, and this week welcomes back one of the most successful residencies in recent memory: Rod Stewart at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace (“A Legend Onstage,” p. 30). Few artists’ music transcends the generations like Sir Rod’s, and this show is certain to get the entire audience out of its seats. Production shows are also back in force, and this week’s issue highlights two of the best: Jabbawockeez at MGM Grand, which has revamped its smash show Timeless (“A Wonderland of Dance,” p. 32), and Fantasy at Luxor, which currently includes the comedic talents of Shayma Tash. Editor at large Brock Radke recently interviewed Tash to talk about her role in the long-running adults-only revue (“Fab & Funny,” p. 36). Like Tash herself, the interview is funny, revealing and engaging. Sports fans now have so many choices in Las Vegas! We now have the NFL’s Raiders, the NHL’s Vegas Golden Knights, and the

WNBA’s Las Vegas Aces, who play their home opener this week at Mandalay Bay (“Drawing a High Card,” p. 38). There’s a big reason Las Vegas is considered one of the finest dining destinations in the world: Its steakhouses. Few cities do quality cuts quite the way we do, and we’ve collected some of the best examples (“9 Great Steaks in Las Vegas,” p. 40). If you happen to be staying near the intersection of Harmon and the Strip this week, you’ll definitely want to check out the latest installment of our Day Planner series. Managing editor Nina King has assembled the perfect day at this location (“Time to Play,” p. 34). The fun continues elsewhere on the Strip, from shows like Tournament of Kings at Excalibur (“Old-World Thrills,” p. 14), eateries like PizzaCake at Harrah’s (“Slice of Heaven,” p. 11) and lounges like the recently reopened Rhumbar at The Mirage (“Get Your Rhum On,” p. 22). And if you’re planning on visiting Tao Beach Dayclub at The Venetian, check out our Friends with Benefits interview with model cocktail server Sweety Nyunt ( p. 20). And make sure to tell her we said hi! The bad news is that you can’t possibly do all these things in one visit. The good news? No matter what you choose, you’re going to have fun. Lots of it.

Silent Silliness Ever play charades with your friends or family, trying your best to pantomime a word or phrase? Odds are your attempt to communicate was far more entertaining than the answer itself. And that’s exactly the vibe you’ll enjoy at Tape Face’s hit show at

Harrah’s. Not only that, odds are pretty good you’ll actually be part of the show. The comedy mime better known as Sam Wills delights in using ordinary household items to elicit laughs; he also delights in pulling volunteers onstage to assist him in

eliciting said laughs. Don’t worry: You won’t do anything strenuous. Most of the time he’ll have you hold a prop, during which time you’ll be the center of attention. Embarrassed? Don’t worry—another volunteer will take your place soon enough. –Ken Miller

Japanese bistro offers something for all Are you craving sushi? Then head to Kusa Nori to satisfy your cravings and, maybe, introduce yourself to something different. This Japanese bistro, right near the District and the casino floor, is decorated in an elegant style, but throughout you’ll find rather whimsical representations of the various denizens of the ocean, like octopus on the walls and fish swimming over the dining area. In a nod to Japanese culture, another area features a flock of fluttering origami birds. Start your meal with a drink—Kusa Nori serves up signature cocktails like a yuzu lemon drop, a hibiscus paloma and the cherry blossom, which features Roku gin and dragon fruit. If you prefer a beer, there are three types of Japanese beers

on tap, and a few in bottles, too. Wine, sake and mocktails are also served. Accompany that drink with a salad to start— cucumber salad with hearts of palm; baby gem salad with wakame, endive and frisée; and the suika poke salad with compressed watermelon, mizuna and myoga ginger. Along those lines, before you get down with the rolls, check out the shareable shigoku oysters, accented by golden ikura and gold flake; the octopus carpaccio with a wasabi aioli; vegetable and shrimp tempuras; and Jidori chicken karaage. The chef’s signature starters include the Crab Kryptonite, with crab dynamite, tobiko and shiitake mushrooms.

There are plenty of classic rolls here, like spicy tuna and a snow crab California roll, but you’ll also find some created specifically for Vegas, like the 3000 LVBLVD, with snow crab and salmon and the Silver State roll with king crab and avocado. For an incredible sashimi tasting experience, choose the nori moriawase, a platter with 10 varying types of sashimi (pictured), which might change depending on availability. If you prefer a meatier option, take advantage of the robata grill, with pork belly, beef filet, lamb chop and Jidori chicken sure to satisfy. Larger entrées include misoyaki black cod with a wakame arare crust. –Nina King Resorts World Las Vegas, 702.676.6965

Slice of Heaven The best slice of pizza I ever had was on the East Coast in a hole-in-the-wall Long Island pizzeria—it’s good to know that I can relive my youth in Buddy Valastro’s PizzaCake at Harrah’s. This cozy New York-style joint re-creates that aesthetic, with photos and street art, and a dining area where the fragrances of cheese, sauce and baking dough fill the air. You can get whole pies, but the slice is where it’s at, folded up with gooey cheese inside. Slices come in cheese, pepperoni, Buffalo chicken, veggie, and the Boss Slice, with pepperoni, sausage, smoked bacon and mozzarella. You can get these outside at a takeaway window, too. For dessert (and considering this is the Cake Boss’s establishment, it’ll be great), order a piece of a six-layer rainbow cake, with vanilla buttercream and rainbow sprinkles. But there’s also vanilla confetti, chocolate fudge, rainbow fudge, carrot and red velvet cakes. To get decadent, order a 14-inch peanut butter cookie cake for the crew or a 14inch s‘mores cookie cake, both on chocolate chip cookie bases and heaped with good toppings. Maybe the best thing ever is the cake ATM, open 24 hours! –Nina King Harrah’s, 702.799.9200

Oar You Ready? Looking for something different to do today in Las Vegas? Grab your group or your sweetie and book a ride along the waters of The Venetian on a gondola ride. Guests can glide along the indoor waters of The Grand Canal Shoppes as the gondolier serenades or take it outdoors and float along the waters Stripside and enjoy the sunshine. Twice a day, guests can also catch the Gondolier March—gondoliers serenade in unison through the indoor canals at 9:50 a.m. and 4:20 p.m. –Kiko Miyasato The Venetian, 702.414.4300

As If by Magic Some particularly favorite moments from a recent Jen Kramer performance: • A seemingly ordinary video Kramer shows the audience of her card-handling skills, one which later turns out to be strangely prophetic at the conclusion of a subsequent card trick; • Kramer’s version of a game show, complete with three mystery doors, an audience volunteer, a hundred-dollar bill and a whole lot of audience participation;

PizzaCake photo courtesy of PizzaCake, gondola rides photo by Richard Brian, Jen Kramer photo by Christopher DeVargas

• Three beach balls, a fake Facebook profile and a box that hangs from the ceiling. (For those who think magicians use plants, heads up: Yours truly got picked for this, and speaking as a nonplant, I was completely floored by the result.) Kramer’s connection with audiences is undeniable. It’s a reminder that magic really is a universal language. –Ken Miller Westgate Las Vegas, 800.745.3000 Ticketmaster

Serene Sanctuary

Mirage attraction honors legendary duo’s legacy Dolphins have excellent vision and make eye contact with humans. They can distinguish between individuals at the surface visiting them at Siegfried & Roy’s Secret Garden & Dolphin Habitat, but only look with one eye at a time. So says the announcer at a pool deep in the heart of The Mirage, where aquatic headliners Maverick, Osborne and K2 strut their stuff. As nearby exotic big cats sun themselves in late-morning sun, the dolphins are ready to play and interact. Low-impact hijinks and swim-bys segue into aerial maneuvers and increasingly complicated choreography. They perform synchronized somersaults in pairs, then double somersaults. They “walk” on water and wave at

people above the surface as well as below, where observation windows provide an aquarium view of the dolphins. Some folks take off their shoes and have photos taken on the wet deck, while several others in wet suits listen to instructions preceding dives into the pool. Elsewhere in the Secret Garden, a small child calls to a white lion from Southern Africa’s Timbavati region, which subsequently opens its eyes. Timbavati means “the place where something sacred came down to Earth from the heavens,” but Timba-Masai looks majestic whether in repose or while wide awake and holding court. The regal resident presides over a realm that includes spotted leopard Neruda, black spotted

leopard Shadow, snow-white Bengal tiger Cosmo and gold Bengal tiger Svengali. Svengali is a rare heterozygous cat capable of producing white cubs, which late, legendary magicians Siegfried Fischbacher and Roy Horn were committed to sustaining. Secret Garden functions as a preserve as well as a scientific research and education destination. Casual learning is part of the fun. Bronzed signs share information about the big cats, and take-home packets full of activities are available for kids at the exit. Look sharp for “The 21st Century Ark of Noah,” an artwork donated by Romanian nuns in appreciation for Siegfried & Roy’s help in building an orphanage. –Matt Kelemen

If you have a large group or family, you’ll definitely want to check out Topgolf Las Vegas, an entertainment facility with so much to do you’ll probably need to revisit multiple times to experience it all. The 120-plus hitting bays are hard to resist, and for good reason: They’re suitable for all skill levels, and feature all sorts of games, including a version of Angry Birds. All the balls have sensors, meaning you can easily keep score with your friends and family as you try to hit different targets spread across a large play area. And while you’re waiting for your turn, order everything from shareables like cheesy macaroni bites, warm pretzel bites and Topgolf wings to sandwiches like the Smokehouse Burger, turkey avocado wrap and fried chicken sandwich. The drink menu features your favorite beers and cocktails like Topgolf Tea, a heady blend of Absolut vodka, Bacardi rum, Bombay Sapphire gin and DeKuyper triple sec. But the fun is just beginning. There are also two pools and five bars, as well as a 48-foot TV screen for some serious entertainment value. –Ken Miller

In FlyOver Las Vegas’ new flight ride film, Legendary Iceland, you’ll soar over all of them, and it’s incredibly moving. Before the main film, a special preshow film in a special antechamber will introduce you to Iceland’s history (and the main character is indeed memorable). Old-World Thrills When you first take your seat at Tournament of Kings, you’re struck by the fact that you’re in a section that represents a country—Romania, Ireland, Spain, Austria, France or Hungary. As you watch the arena’s various sections fill up, you’re brought a meal that consists entirely of finger foods like a Cornish game hen, a bun and steamed veggies (no utensils here; the experience is meant to replicate a medieval feast). The adults in the audience can order a beer, while the kiddos can enjoy a soft drink. But old or young, you’ll be smiling from start to finish as the Knights of the Round Table compete for their country’s supremacy. As the action unfolds, you cheer when your country’s knight mounts a steed and competes in various demonstrations of skill, from jousting to sword fighting. And just when things are getting interesting, the forces of darkness descend on the proceedings. There’s much fighting, conquering and, as you would expect, much rejoicing. Tournament of Kings is as old as the Excalibur, and that’s not by accident; it remains one of the finest entertainments on the Strip for all ages. –Ken Miller

Tentpole Production

Caesars Palace show is one of the Strip’s best It’s a question anyone who’s lived long enough in Las Vegas is eventually asked by their guests: “If you could only see one show while you’re in town, which one would it be?” For at least the last 10 years, that answer more often than not is probably Absinthe, a one-of-a-kind production in a one-of-a-kind venue that has been drawing rave reviews since it debuted on the Strip in 2011. It’s the kind of show you can’t wait to tell everyone about once you’ve seen it. The venue itself makes you feel like you’re part of something special. The spiegeltent is ornately decorated, its circular space featuring a bar,

16

5.8.22

LAS VEGAS MAGAZINE

hundreds of seats, tables, and a smallish circular stage at the center. “That’s it?” you might be asking yourself. But you’ll forget you even thought it once the show begins. That space is used extremely effectively by a variety of acts, all connected by the extremely foul-mouthed (and extremely funny) Gazillionaire, a sleazy “producer” who brags about his money when he’s not insulting the audience and abusing his poor assistant, Wanda Widdles, who’s not above being a bit blue herself. The acts themselves are all world-class, starting with one that may induce vertigo in some audience members—an acrobat slowly ascends to

the top of a chair mountain he builds, balancing himself along the way and sometimes actually moving the chair mountain around. Once he reaches the top, down comes The Green Fairy, an iconic part of the show displaying great curves and great pipes as she serenades the crowd with “Come On-A My House.” It’s the perfect segue into the show’s raunchy—but fun—style. Along the way, you’ll enjoy acrobats, jugglers, strongmen and a few naughty intermissions that will have you doubled over with laughter. Just like the drink itself, this show is intoxicating—and maybe just a little addictive. –Ken Miller Caesars Palace, 18+ticketmaster.com

The acclaimed French chef brings all his edible masterpieces to the plate at this fine-dining establishment. For those with mad green, the Celebration Menu offers a multicourse experience with wine pairing for $555 per person. Dishes include octopus terrine with caviar and saffron, seabream with Mediterranean flavors, Savoy’s signature artichoke and black truffle soup, A5 Japanese wagyu with lobster and a caramel-and-popcorn dessert. If a prepared menu is not up your alley, go à la carte with starters like the famous soup, seared foie gras and caviar service, then follow with selections from the sea (roasted wild Atlantic turbot, lobster or salmon) or land (Muscovy duck confit or veal chop). Every dish is an indulgent flavor experience in French cooking. End the memorable meal with the dessert trolley. Have your server wheel the decadence on over to your table and peruse plates of ice cream, sorbet, Mason jar desserts and traditional and modern French pastries. Bon appétit, indeed! –Kiko Miyasato

Don’t Look Down There is no shortage of WTF moments in Las Vegas, but the thrill rides atop The STRAT SkyPod might top them all. A triple threat of death-defying experiences await: X-Scream, Insanity and Big Shot, all with their own unique brand of OMG that will stir you to the core. Undoubtedly, you’ll all scream on X-Scream, a roller coaster that resembles a seesaw, which teeters over the edge of the SkyPod. As for Insanity, there’s no better

name for this carousel (which is controlled by a monstrous mechanical arm) that dangles and spins 64 feet away from the tower. Big Shot is a pneumatically powered ride that shuttles up and down the tower’s iconic space needle. Although it seems rather pedestrian now compared to the other rides, it’s still incredibly fun. Welcoming you to Tao Beach Dayclub No, it’s not a nickname. Yes, it’s on her birth certificate. Sweety Nyunt gets asked all the time if that’s her real name. But the name fits her perfectly, because she is a real sweetheart. And you can find out for yourself when you visit her at the newly reopened Tao Beach Dayclub at The Venetian, where she’s taking care of guests as one of the model cocktail servers. “I am one of the faces of Tao Beach,” says the Bangkok native. “I’m hosting. I’m providing every service the guest may need. I cater to them.” Nyunt has been hosting and serving for a few years now, starting her career in nightlife in Arizona while attending Arizona State University, where she graduated with a degree in exercise and wellness. She wanted to further her career in the industry, so she decided to move to

Vegas. “I took the leap of faith and moved here in 2019,” she says. And it’s worked out. She’s served at Light Nightclub at Mandalay Bay, Ayu Dayclub at Resorts World, and was part of the opening team at Tao Beach Dayclub when it reopened its doors this spring. “Tao Beach is like an actual vacation destination,” Nyunt says. “Like you’re in Bali, on an island. And it’s my job to help give everyone a good experience and the best vacation. To be welcoming.” When she’s not acting as a one-woman welcome wagon, Nyunt, who also does professional modeling, loves to cook Italian food, go wine tasting and go range shooting. But it’s not just the location that leads to all that traffic— the Pan-Asian cuisine here is seriously good, all overseen by executive chef AJ Ang and his team. The room itself is designed for high volume; it’s lengthy and arranged for maximum seating. There’s a small patio area and a bar for those unable to snag a table, but anywhere you sit at La La Noodle, you’re guaranteed to feel the energy coursing through this place.

The experience here is best started with a cocktail, and there are some doozies here, highlighted by the La La Cooler, a mix of sake, grapefruit, lemongrass, ginger and soda, and the Okinawa Old-Fashioned, a flavorful twist on the classic with Suntory Toki whiskey, kokuto syrup, bitters and orange.

General Tso’s chicken

Ang’s menu reflects his passion for his craft; he’s always looking to expand his food knowledge, and while La La Noodle has dishes you’ll instantly recognize, there are also some genuine surprises—or, as he terms it, “New Age food.” Start with one of Ang’s delightful appetizers, including green papaya

Chef specialties here are dominated by Chinese food favorites like General Tso’s chicken, here served with soy, vinegar, sherry wine and red chili; Mongolian beef, Kung Pao chicken or shrimp; and black pepper roast pork with a soy glaze, red chili and bok choy. Other fan favorites here include many varieties of fried rice (pork, oxtail, vegetable, garlic shrimp and more); stir-fry like drunken beef, pan-fried lobster and shrimp, vegetable lo mein and pad thai; and soups like hot and sour and wonton. Soup noodles are well worth checking out here as well, from dan

dan, made with yang chun noodles, minced pork, peanuts, scallions, chili oil, sesame seeds, chicken broth, cucumber and carrots, to curry Laksa noodle, a delicious mix of green beans, basil, onions, red chili peppers and scallions and your choice of chicken or tofu. If you want a truly special Las Vegas dining experience, make a reservation and schedule time to meet with chef Ang. He’ll sit down with you and find out all about you—where you’re from, your personal preferences, tastes, sensitivity to spices, etc. Then sit back and get ready for a surprise dish made just for you. It’s not on the menu (and will cost market price), but trust us: This experience is well worth planning for.

Rod Stewart’s catalog provides a wealth of hits in concert By Matt Kelemen

was dubbed “Rod the Mod” early in his career, but that was more rhyme than reason. He’s more the ultimate lad than a symbol of the stylish mid-’60s Swinging London scene that begat The Who and Small Faces. Young Stewart was stylish but more interested in soccer and lifting a pint with friends. As a singer, he established himself with the Jeff Beck Group before following his own muse for the next five-plus decades. He took ’70s superstardom in stride and created a body of work that he revisits with every performance of his residency at the Colosseum. To date, according to Pollstar, Stewart has played “Maggie May” more than 1,500 times in concert. There are 1,420 performances of “Tonight’s the Night (Gonna Be Alright)” on record, nearly 1,400 of “You’re in My Heart (The Final Acclaim)” and more than 1,300 of “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy?” “Hot Legs” has been cranked out for audiences at least 1,230 times. Stewart adopted beatnik culture at first and segued into mod culture, cultivating his trademark spiky, backcombed hairstyle during that time. He dressed with flair when he first started sitting in with bands and learned to play harmonica, but once he discovered R&B and learned his vocal range was the same as Sam Cooke’s, his apparel took a back seat to performance. Stewart would go on to cover Cooke hits such Caesars Palace 7:30 p.m. May as “Twistin’ the Night Away” and 13-14, 18 & 20-21, “Bring It on Home to Me” on his solo starting at $49 records, and performed “Having a plus tax and fee. Party” at his most recent concerts. ticketmaster.com Before he signed his first solo contract with Mercury Records, he became the singer for the Jeff Beck Group, where Beck was the focal point. Stewart perfected his raspy vocal style on two JBG records before leaving with bandmate Ron Wood to form Faces with bassist Ronnie Lane, keyboardist Ian McLagan and drummer Kenney Jones from Small Faces. The mod look gave way to scruff, and Faces went on become the best good-time, unpretentiously rocking band of their era. Their hit “Stay with Me” was part of Stewart’s Colosseum concert setlist in 2020. Stewart had a solo deal during his time with Faces and hit his stride with third album Every Picture Tells a Story. In addition to “Maggie May” he cut Tim Hardin cover “Reason to Believe” and “The Killing of Georgie (Part I & II),” which have been part of his most recent sets. He recorded “Twistin’ the Night Away” on the follow-up album, 1972’s Never a Dull Moment, which also featured a cover of “I’d Rather Go Blind” and “You Wear It Well.” Both songs were part of his last Caesars Palace concert in October, as well as Faces song “Ooh La La,” originally sung by Wood. Stewart reunited with Wood and Jones last year to record some new material, but until it appears, Stewart is happy to perform the song live and provide a good time to be had by all.

Jabbawockeez’ latest incarnation of ‘Timeless’ introduces new elements Jabbawockeez Theater is completely packed one April evening, 10 days after the grand opening of a revised and retooled Timeless, Jabbawockeez’s third Las Vegas production. The timing of Timeless’ original opening coincided with the beginning of lockdowns, disrupting momentum. Disruptions of momentum are bad for dancing, as well as dance crews eager to bring their newest concepts in choreography to hard-won fan bases. The capacity crowd on hand for a 7 p.m. performance is populated with members of that fan base whose enthusiasm for Jabbawockeez has not been disrupted. If they are seeing Timeless for the second time, it may seem like an entirely new show. Timeless debuted at Jabbawockeez Theater shortly before the pandemic lockdowns, reopened in a much larger venue to accommodate social distancing, then moved back after protocols were lifted. “We’ve been through so many revamps of Timeless just because of COVID,” says cast member Rynan “Kid Rainen” Paguio. “It’s crazy that a show we opened right before COVID went to MGM Grand

Garden Arena after so many months, and we had all these protocols. We had to revamp the show for that stage and that audience, and then getting back to the theater and having to change to what we had before was just a crazy situation.” Social distancing extended to stage choreography, so the entire show had to be blocked to create distance among cast members. Contact wasn’t allowed so tandem moves had to be cut or reimagined. Frustrating as it was, it provided leeway to hone the “Regional” segment, which takes the audience on a whirlwind tour of hip-hop’s major scenes, and to mix Busta Rhymes into a moody segment set to Billie Eilish beats. The enthusiasm for being back in action shows in the effervescence emanating from the stage as Jabbawockeez go back in time to visit dance cultures past, trading track suits for zoot suits at one point. The emotion they convey through body movement alone, enhanced by their iconic expressionless masks and combined with apparently effortless precision, never ceases to amaze. Timeless is their most up-close-and-personal show yet. Next-level LED technology provides crystal-clear illuminated backdrops, and lasers are used in an innovative way that suggests Jabbawockeez possess magical powers along with supreme dance skills. One left-field addition made to Timeless is a third-quarter karaoke segment that requires audience participation and emphasizes the comedy skills inherent to the most renown urban dance crew in the world. The Jabbawockeez have come a long way in two decades of existence, driven by the excitement of blazing new frontiers for b-boys and creating a blueprint for how to succeed. They even have a new Timeless NFT ticket that gives fans special access as well as a collectible digital memento. Ultimately, the show is all about purposeful, expressive movement that entertains as well as inspires. Watch the kids wearing white masks exiting the theater, confidently mimicking dance moves they just saw, and the cultural significance of Jabbawockeez is made more apparent than any words can express.

Boulevard and Harmon Avenue. So, jump out of that cushy hotel bed and get going! Two tips: Wear good walking shoes and allow for 15 to 20 minutes between locations. 8 a.m.: Order room service for coffee and tea. Yes, this will be pricey for a cup of coffee, but the sheer magnificence, and convenience, of having

that morning pick-me-up delivered on a white tablecloth is priceless. (And it delays the inevitable moment when you have to put on your pants for the day.) 9:30 a.m.: Head to Bellagio, where you’ll check out the Conservatory & Botanical Gardens. It only takes about 15 minutes to wander through this free attraction, and through May 14, you’ll experience the Flights of Fancy exhibit, with butterflies, birds and hot-air balloons floating amid boatloads of flowers. When you’re done, you’ll head to Aria for brunch.

11 a.m.-1 p.m: There are plenty of places to get brunch in Vegas, but this weekend you are dining at Catch. It’s a good thing you made reservations early, as spots can go quickly. This seafood-forward restaurant features tartare, sashimi, oysters, and plenty of rolls. And vegetarians will dig the vegetable king roll, with king oyster mushrooms, cashews and spicy mayo. It’s yum. But that’s not the extent of the menu: Burgers, waffles, cinnamon roll pancakes, beet-cured salmon Benedict ... the dishes here are familiar, yet really creative, too. 1-3 p.m.: Ready to shop? You have two options here: The elegant environment of The Shops at Crystals is on the west side of Las Vegas Boulevard at Harmon; you’ll find shops such as Alexander McQueen, Cartier, Fender and Hermes, as well as The Original Immersive Van Gogh Exhibit Las Vegas. Diagonally across the boulevard, you’ll find Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood Resort, with stores like Desigual, Original Penguin and Marciano. 4-6 p.m.: It’s been a long day so far. Time to liquor up! Head to Cabo Wabo Cantina at Miracle Mile Shops, sit on the patio and order a tequila flight, which will let you try several varieties of the agave spirit. Add a

signature margarita and tacos and life is good. Cabo Wabo is across the street from Bellagio, so you’ll get a fountain show, too. Or go to your room and have a nap. Your choice; we won’t judge. 6-7:15 p.m.: Duck into your hotel room and get dressed for the night; then head back out. 8 p.m.: Zappos Theater at Planet Hollywood is home to many musical acts, from Shania Twain to John Leg-

end. This week, The Doobie Brothers start an extended run. And for fans, Zappos has long been a Vegas favorite; small enough to feel a connection to the artist and big enough for the audience excitement to energize you.

10 p.m.-midnight:

Catch another fountain show on your way back to your hotel, then gamble for a bit. Saturday nights are particularly fun in the casinos, and you will often find a jackpot waiting!

Comedian Shayma Tash offers levity during ‘Fantasy’ VETERAN COMEDIAN Shayma Tash recently rejoined the longrunning and wildly successful revue Fantasy at Luxor, where she trades nights with her friend and longtime Strip headliner Murray Sawchuck in providing a bit of a comedic break from the sexy performance. Tash knows how to appeal to all different types of audiences, after spending years touring comedy clubs across the country and playing the cruise ship circuit, but above all else, she stays true to her unique style, delivery and perspective.

36

5.8.22

LAS VEGAS MAGAZINE

When did you first join the cast of Fantasy? I started in 2009 when I was still living in L.A., doing a show called Pretty Funny Women. I came in for a week to fill in for the regular comedian, and later when I moved out to Vegas, (producer) Anita (Mann) became aware I was living in Vegas and said, “Hey, why don’t you come in as the swing?” Basically, I’ve been the relief pitcher for quite some time while doing some other shows at other venues on the Strip. I worked for Carrot Top for a while, too. But there’s just something special about working with a bunch of women.

It’s also special because it’s so different from doing regular touring stand-up comedy shows, right? One of the main things for me is the fact that I get to wear an evening gown. If I want to wear something sexy, as a female comic, that’s not always the most comfortable thing to do—not for me, but for audiences.

By Brock Radke

I think it’s changing, but audiences sometimes tend to put a female comic in a certain category or, historically, put women in a certain category. When you do comedy, you’re supposed to be quirky, not sexy. But this show is giving me the opportunity to express both sides of myself in the same show...

How did those perceptions of women in comedy influence your development? I tried a lot of different things in terms of image, and I’ve always been mindful of how I would dress. I started more than 20 years ago, and that’s a long time to have to explore different ways to present my material. But wardrobe does come into play because it’s the first thing people see, and they judge you on that. I’ve done everything from jeans and a T-shirt to business casual. I’ve done dresses, stuff that looked like I was going to the club, and now most recently I started wearing a low-cut evening gown. At Fantasy, (the audience) has

been dazzled by gorgeous women all night, so if I wear something sexy, it’s not as distracting.

What’s the backstage environment like at Fantasy? There is so much camaraderie and people are very supportive. That’s something I think is a misconception about an all-female show or all-female anything, that women can’t work well together. I’ve done a lot of different female comedy tours and I’ve always found it to be the opposite. These women are fun, caring, attentive and supportive.

It’s clearly a very special show, or else it wouldn’t have lasted more than 22 years on the Strip. Job security is very important for a comedian. There are a lot of people like me who have been in the business 20 years and don’t know where the next gig is going to come from. Being involved with something like Fantasy, that is so well-established and is not going anywhere, that’s how I was able to set down roots. Plus, everybody regards it so highly. It just won several different awards, and everybody knows about it.

Nothing But the Best

Custom home builder delivers design masterpieces across the Las Vegas Valley In Las Vegas, Blue Heron is known for its high-end, striking designs. Last summer, the company sold its most expensive home ever, Vegas Modern 001 (and the most expensive yet sold in Las Vegas as of press time). We talked to founder Tyler Jones about the company and building the home. Your family has been in Vegas for a really, really long time. But Blue Heron has only been

44

5.8.22

LAS VEGAS MAGAZINE

established since 2004. What was your impetus behind founding the company? I grew up with my father’s (home building) company … and ultimately went to architecture school at University of Colorado in Boulder. By the time I was 25, when we started up the company, I’d already had quite a bit of both construction and design experience. Blue Heron was a way to put it all together to come up with a process and a workflow for our clients and for

our team. It was more efficient, and was always about this ultra-strong architectural vision. A lot of Blue Heron architecture has a (particular) contemporary feel. Why does that type of style resonate with you? Our Vegas Modern design philosophy is all about being authentic to the culture and what people who live in Las Vegas ... need and want in their homes. It’s also about what is

LVING

appropriate to build in the desert with modern technologies and modern abilities. It’s really kind of a common-sense approach, and it’s also beautiful. There are no rules to the type of design we do, which is very important to us because we like to push boundaries and (we’re) constantly evolving. The Vegas Modern 001 house recently sold; it is incredibly beautiful. What in that home were you most proud of? The cohesive nature of the design. You can really tell that it was done by the same team that had a perfectly aligned vision, and we didn’t compromise on any of that as we went all the way through a very complicated and expensive

and difficult design and build process. That takes an incredibly talented team, and it takes a special structure from a company standpoint, to be able to orchestrate a large group of professionals coming from different disciplines. It was the most expensive house sold in Las Vegas yet. What do you think contributed to its quick sale? Well, I had the opportunity to meet with the buyer personally. And he recognized that this was really a masterpiece, and what the Blue Heron team did in Vegas Modern 001 is not otherwise available in Las Vegas. There’s nothing else out there that’s been designed to that same level and executed to that same level.

Thinking about Las Vegas’ future and home building, where do you think it’s going? I just don’t think there’s a limit to what could happen in Las Vegas. As a city, we’re still in our infancy. I think technology moves very quickly these days. So what’s possible in terms of how you design and build homes changes month to month. That’s very exciting for us because we like to stay at the very cutting edge of construction science and design. And the modern lifestyle is evolving faster than ever. Part of the fun of what we do is to continuously adapt and evolve to meet those needs. We’re just getting started on Vegas Modern 002 right now. That’ll be our next step (and) it’s kind of our research and development. –Nina King
