NOTES

From the Editor A Dream Team

You’re reading a super-special edition of Las Vegas Magazine. It highlights two of our favorite things, both in the best way possible: Las Vegas nightclubs and the entertainers who bring them to vibrant life for millions of partygoers. Our city has been a vanguard in the nightlife scene for decades, and the superstar DJs who have landed here are a huge part of that. So when Resorts World Las Vegas opened last year, one of the first things we wanted to check out was its nightclub, as every such venue that opens on the Strip raises the stakes as to what’s possible, both technologically and sonically. Needless to say, Zouk Nightclub didn’t disappoint. There’s no other way to put it: The place is unbelievable. It will be a must-visit among clubgoers for years to come. And one of the world’s top DJs, Tiësto, will be among the top talent to perform there, as he’s just signed on for a residency. When it comes to venue and performer, this is pretty much a dream team. This feels like Elvis at The International, Liberace at the Riviera, Celine Dion at Caesars Palace. In this week’s issue, we prominently feature both Tiësto and the sparkling venue he’ll bring to life. Associate editor Kiko Miyasato sat down with the DJ and producer for a very revealing interview, and staff photographer Christopher De-

Vargas grabbed some sensational images of both the performer and the nightclub itself. The overall concept was developed by my world-class art team of Wes Gatbonton and Christina Trimidal, and we’re very proud of the feature everyone’s efforts produced (“The Ultimate Party,” p. 30). And that’s just the beginning of what you’ll find packed into this week’s issue. Fans of live music will definitely want to check out our previews of Carlos Santana, who returns to his residency at the House of Blues at Mandalay Bay (“Sustaining the Note,” p. 36), The Doobie Brothers (including Michael McDonald), who perform at Planet Hollywood Resort (“Signature Sounds,” p. 38), and Carrie Underwood, who returns to her Resorts World residency (“Larger Than Country,” p. 9). Love looking at gorgeous homes? Definitely check out our LVing section for a huge, Italian-inspired estate in Lake Las Vegas (“Water You Waiting For?” p. 44). Best of all? It could be yours! Love looking at gorgeous photographs? No one does it better than National Geographic, which, along with Imagine Exhibitions, brings its Rarely Seen show to Bally’s (“Moving Pictures,” p. 14). We’re so glad you picked this week to visit Las Vegas. Because you and the Strip? That’s a true dream team as well.

the coolest productions in town, with all the elements you might expect in a Vegas show. You’ll hear all the hits, from “Drinking Alone” and “Before He Cheats” to “Jesus Take the Wheel” and “Last Name,” but Underwood isn’t content to stop there—she

also belts out an amazing version of Led Zeppelin’s “Rock and Roll.” Throughout all this, you’ll get pyrotechnic and water effects, not to mention backup dancers and multiple costume changes. She’ll perform May 18 and May 20-21. –Ken Miller

Spend Some Time

English pub gets the Gordon Ramsay twist The English pub experience is instantly comforting; what could be better than a pint of your favorite ale, stout or cider while noshing on fish and chips? And Gordon Ramsay Pub & Grill takes that experience and elevates it, adding the Ramsay touch from top to bottom. The space itself is prime real estate within Caesars Palace. It’s directly across from the Colosseum, so people-watching here is not only plentiful, it’s downright mandatory. There’s plenty of seating, which means you’ll almost never have difficulty securing a table. And your waitstaff are very attentive and friendly. You’ll look forward to hanging out.

Start your experience here with a signature cocktail like the Goodbye Blue Sky, featuring Stoli Bluberi, blackberry purée and sparkling wine, or the Belgian margarita, a delicious blend of Patron anejo, agave nectar and Lindeman’s cassis lambic. Starters all have Ramsay’s signature touch. Spinach and artichoke dip gets the truffle treatment for an extra burst of flavor, coupled with Havarti cheese. Nachos here are made with kettle chips and topped with short ribs, English cheddar sauce, pickled peppers and sour cream. And shrimp cocktail is poached and served with lemon vinaigrette and horseradish.

In addition to the classic fish and chips, made with beer-battered cod and served with malt vinegar, aioli and mushy peas, Ramsay has loaded his menu with items that fans of his shows will recognize instantly. For the true experience, opt for Gordon’s three-course dinner. For one price, you get your choice of a starter (classic Caesar or onion and ale soup), an entrée of Ramsay’s most popular item, beef Wellington (accompanied by mashed Yukon gold potatoes, root vegetables and red wine demi-glace), and another Ramsay favorite, sticky toffee pudding. This package comes complete with wine pairings to put it completely over the top. –Ken Miller

Action Figure

The Venetian, 702.862.7800

Dwayne Johnson is currently appearing in Las Vegas—sort of. Madame Tussauds Las Vegas unveiled his wax figure at its Strip location. The figure, which was also simultaneously unveiled in other iterations at Madame Tussauds across the country, welcomes you to a new Teremana tequila-themed bar (Johnson’s tequila brand). Johnson’s figure is wearing attire re-created from his Voss Water campaign of 2019. “We’re thrilled to welcome Dwayne Johnson’s four new amazing figures to Madame Tussauds New York, Hollywood, Las Vegas, and Orlando,” said Matthew Clarkson, head of marketing for Madame Tussauds, in a statement. “He’s a humble icon, and a figure that has been highly requested by our fans. We’re honored to have had the opportunity to represent him at the world’s greatest wax museum.” While there, make sure to take in the rest of what Madame Tussauds Las Vegas has to offer, including Miley Cyrus (and her life-size wrecking ball from the song of the same name), Snoop Dogg, complete with 7-foot joint, and the entire Marvel superhero ensemble (complete with 4-D movie experience). There’s also a bar dedicated to the 2009 Las Vegas-set classic The Hangover. –Ken Miller

Flash Dance

It’s a mix of music, art and dance in simply one of the coolest, most visual shows on the Las Vegas Strip. In a completely dark showroom, iLuminate lights up the stage with a troupe of dancers that wear customized LED suits rigged with wireless lighting programs. The show uses quirky comedy and creative set designs, and the visuals created by the kaleidoscope of LED programming on each dancer’s suit creates some pretty cool illusions. –Kiko Miyasato The STRAT, 702.380.7777

When a steakhouse has a 150-year legacy, you know you’re in for something special. The original Old Homestead Steakhouse in New York City dates back to 1868, and all that experience and knowledge is brought to bear at the Las Vegas outpost. Whether you opt for surf (Petrossian caviar with a blini accompaniment or yellowtail tartare with cucumber, chili and garlic oil) or turf (8-ounce American wagyu rib cap or 24-ounce bone-in “Gotham” rib-

eye), you’ll be doing so in ultimate comfort with an attentive waitstaff and a serene ambience that begs you to stay awhile. For a meal to remember, order the Ultimate Dinner for Two, where sharing is the focus. It includes a succulent and juicy, 34-ounce bone-in porterhouse, chopped salad and your choice of sides and dessert (we recommend the Big Fat Chocolate Cake!). –Ken Miller Caesars Palace, 702.731.7560

Making Waves

Iconic production has a huge talent pool Often described as surreal and ethereal, Cirque du Soleil’s landmark production “O” is more than the Montreal-based entertainment giant’s most successful show around the world. It’s one of the most technically advanced theatrical presentations anywhere, arguably equally iconic in Las Vegas as the wondrous dancing fountains that front the hotel at the heart of the Strip. The water is perhaps the most celebrated element of “O,” the 1.5-million-gallon pool that serves as the diffuse foundation of one of the Strip’s all-time greatest venues. No matter how many times one has visited this theater inspired by a 14th-century European operahouse, the way

12

5.15.22

LAS VEGAS MAGAZINE

that water is used so masterfully to convey the idea of infinity and other otherworldly themes continues to astound. It’s been 23 years since “O” arrived at Bellagio, and Las Vegas has never been the same. Without a doubt, it is recognized as one of the most influential pieces of entertainment in the city that built a reputation for doing just that. Different styles of dance are represented, as are unique, age-old circus performances, all powered by a full live band and vocalists injecting unlimited energy into the theater from their two studio rooms perched above both ends of the stage. Be careful with how long you allow these

amazing musicians to attract your attention, because at any moment a skeletal ghost ship might appear above the water for its acrobatic voyage. Of course, everyone has their favorite acts and scenes from “O”: perhaps the joyous celebration when the acrobats emerge to play on the powerful Russian swing; or the inside-joke, blinkand-you’ll-miss-it moment when the show’s underwater scuba crew quickly surfaces like a squadron of beached seals. There are times to laugh and cheer and times to sit quietly, stunned at the artistry and befuddled at the creativity behind this masterpiece. –Brock Radke Bellagio, 888.488.7111

Brazilian steakhouses are a carnivore’s dream come true— just keep showing your green flag on your table, and your servers will keep bringing you different cuts (the red flag means you need a break). For one of the best examples of this unique experience, head to Galpão Gaucho, where the cultural aspect is as satisfying as the cuisine. There are two things you can be sure of when you dine here: You’ll have about as authentic an experience as you could imagine; and you’ll not leave hungry. You’ll certainly experience as many meats as you could imagine, including rib-eye, lamb chops, chicken, grilled salmon, filet mignon … all soooo good. Along the way, you’ll want to cleanse your palate with caramelized bananas and rehydrate with cocktails like a barrel-aged Manhattan. Everything at Galpão Gaucho is prepared according to cultural standards, and your servers will be more than happy to stay awhile and educate you on the history of churrascarias. If your party includes any vegetarians, don’t worry—there’s a plentiful salad bar, featuring deviled eggs, salads, fresh fruit, soups and much more. And you can go back as many times as you want. –Ken Miller

No matter how many times you’ve viewed Vincent Van Gogh’s masterpieces “The Starry Night,” “Café Terrace at Night” and “Irises,” you’ll feel like you’re seeing them for the first time at The Original Immersive Van Gogh Exhibit. This multimedia presentation projects the famous artist’s works across four walls, on the ceiling and on the floor, all set to music. The overall effect is powerful, hypnotic and mesmerizing. –Ken Miller The Shops at Crystals, VanGoghVegas.com

Are you a Prince fan? No? I don’t believe you. Really? Well, attend just one performance of Purple Reign: The Prince Tribute Show, and you’re sure to be among the converted. Tribute artist Jason Tenner, a pair of dancers and an incredible band give an inspired show, with Tenner ably evoking Prince’s persona, wearing signature outfits and makeup and playing the guitar. (Tenner is bigger than Prince was, but somehow seems mostly the same size; it’s wild).

You’ll hear Prince’s biggest hits, of course, like “Raspberry Beret” and “Purple Rain,” but you’ll be surprised to learn there are some more obscure songs like risqué “Darling Nikki,” which is somehow as hot here as the artist himself intended it. A Morris Day and the Time tribute act adds some comedic respite, so you’ll have a moment to catch your breath before the music takes it away again. –Nina King Tropicana, ticketmaster.com

Moving Pictures In the new exhibition Rarely Seen, you’ll find that simple photographs are not so simple after all. Based on the book National Geographic Rarely Seen: Photographs of the Extraordinary, this immersive experience from Imagine Exhibitions showcases the amazing variety of life and landscape on planet Earth. There are 50 photos featured in the exhibit, and the large prints on the walls allow for close inspection and encourage an appreciation of detail. And the addition of multimedia aspects of sound and light projection means an emotional connection to the displays—you’ll be awestruck by a seeming ocean of penguins and enchanted with the beauty of a dark night illuminated by the fairy lights of fireflies. There are photos of humans, too, like the pope taking a selfie with a young admirer. Near the end, you’ll find one room dedicated to the release of lanterns into the sky. It’s a great image that not only captures the moment that the lanterns rise, but make you feel almost as if you were there, and really seeing what the photographer intended. –Nina King

High Class, Literally

Hard-Hitting Hilarity Faithful viewers of Bill Maher’s HBO Series Real Time know one thing for certain: The stand-up comedian is not shy about speaking his mind. He takes both Democrats and Republicans to serious task in getting to the bottom of what is right and wrong with America (lately, his balance sheet has skewed highly into the wrong area). That philosophy extends to his stand-up routine—attending one of his shows is like reading the newspaper, only instead of get-

Flying High

Sleight-of-hand meets silliness Nonsense reigns supreme during a performance of Piff the Magic Dragon. There’s no rhyme or reason to any of the proceedings; the point is to just have fun and laugh as much as possible. Whether it’s a bit of shrubbery producing strange fruit, a fortune cookie that reveals all the intimate details of an audience member’s marriage, or a volunteer producing a card from an unexpected part of their body, this is a show to make you just shrug your shoulders and get lost in the rambling, ridiculous and riotous world it creates. Piff himself is actually an accomplished magician, garnering the respect of such heavyweights as Penn Jillette (who appears, hilariously, in a fake movie preview that introduces the show). But he never draws your attention to it; rather,

16

5.15.22

LAS VEGAS MAGAZINE

he’s content to keep you continually off-balance with his mix of audience participation and non sequiturs, most of them courtesy of his “squire,” who operates one of the cameras (when he’s not bringing Piff dispatches from the audience and prancing around), and Jade Simone, Piff’s real-life wife, who’s constantly in motion—and occasionally very expressive! The process of finding volunteers is a big part of the show’s entertainment value—Piff grabs a large flashlight and points it into the audience, often singling out individuals whom he continues to harass throughout the show. He goes out into the audience by way of an extended stage, at the end of which he’s positioned a microphone. Those called onstage truly get their 15 minutes

of fame—and a chance to get something from a huge toy capsule vending machine. In perhaps the show’s most delightful bit, Piff becomes a magical therapist, helping a couple “fix” their relationship, complete with literal olive branches (with rubber gloves on the ends), the aforementioned piece of shrubbery, his dog Mr. Piffles and some music by Enya. It’s hard to imagine anyone watching this unfold and keeping a straight face. Even Piff occasionally lets loose with a laugh over how outrageous this all is. But Piff can’t let the show end without demonstrating some serious magic skills. He may call himself “The Loser of America’s Got Talent,” but as a Strip performer, Piff is a winner in every department. –Ken Miller

And he came to me one day and said he has a potential venue at Mandalay Bay; that’s how it all started. Libertine Social—it’s all in the name. It’s a place that’s social, fun, something for everyone.” On the cocktail side, guests can sip through a specially created collection of swizzles, fizzes, barrel-aged, bottled and classic craft cocktails. On the food side, a not-to-miss appetizer, and one that has become a signature, is the caviar fried egg with slices of brioche toast for dipping. The house-baked pretzel with a beer cheddar fondue and the delish cheese board are also great starters. Bone-in rib-eye, skirt steak and some fish options are all impressive land-and-sea choices, but don’t miss the shrimp and grits, the Libertine cheeseburger or the fried chicken sandwich. –Kiko Miyasato

Matthew Olson

Pilot’s career continues to soar This is Maverick Helicopters pilot and instructor Matthew Olson’s favorite week. “If you ever walk into this place during Electric Daisy Carnival, you would have no idea that we go to the Grand Canyon,” he says, laughing. “It’s transformed to look like the Speedway. I’ve flown EDC—this’ll be No. 7. You see the artists that come up that play at 7 or 8 o’clock at night, then next year, they’re playing at 11 and then the next year, they’re headlining the main stage. Martin Garrix, Zedd, Tiësto, Calvin Harris, Armin van Burren, Paul Oakenfold, Marshmello, DJ Snake—I’ve got to fly all those guys out there.” It would make sense that EDC week is Olson’s favorite. The California native grew up studying music, specifically classical drumming, even getting his BA in music. But after college he decided to change directions and go after a lifelong passion. “Deep down, I always wanted to be a pilot,” he says. He enrolled in flight school in Colorado, realized he loved flying

helicopters instead of planes, built up his flight hours (Olson has roughly 4,400), and in 2014, he joined Maverick as a pilot; by 2018, he added instructor to his title. “I’ve met people from all around the world—from countries that I didn’t even know I’d ever meet anyone from: Mongolia, Tahiti, Ivory Coast,” he says. “It shows that Vegas is attracting people from all over the world. You are now part of their vacation, their bucket-listcrossing-off-moments, if you will. You definitely have an impact ... They’re going to remember the Strip—the activities you do in the city that really fortify your vacation here, and that’s this company and what we do.” And EDC week is no exception. “With the vibe that’s happening here, the vibe at the (Speedway)—you’re involved with something completely different and you’re now part of one of the biggest music festivals of the year,” Olson says.” –Kiko Miyasato

Think of it as a mini-rave over at the Downtown Las Vegas Events Center. The massive outdoor venue hosts the Factory 93 Rave party on May 19 with Boris Brejcha, Ann Clue and Moritz Hofbauer. Since EDC ends in the morning, you still might be in party mode as you return to your hotel. Well, the city has got you covered. Continue to wear those dancing shoes but throw on a bathing

Lost Spirits Distillery’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea dinner is a deep, delicious dive By itself, Lost Spirits Distillery is already one of the must-visit destinations in the Las Vegas Valley. Its combination of otherworldly design and creatively designed spirits—all under the watchful eye of co-founder and CEO Bryan Davis—provide an unforgettable experience. But there’s now a new reason to visit, one that enhances the attraction’s overall effect: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, a 16-course dinner that uses plenty of the alcoholic beverages Lost Spirits is world-famous for. Once you are guided to your dining room (a memorable experience in itself, as you board a simulated submarine that takes you to a tasting room where chandeliers

sway and fish swim outside the portholes, creating an underwater effect), you’re seated along with 11 other guests at a long, wooden table, with actual candles burning in large candelabras. Above you, Vietnamese silk lanterns seem to swarm. You half expect Captain Nemo to appear at any moment! Social interaction is highly encouraged at this dinner, and Lost Spirits has come up with the perfect lubrication for that: Sparkling rum, a special creation that’s only available at this dinner. It’s wonderfully smooth, and refilled every time your cup gets remotely shallow. As a soundtrack dominated by Leonard Cohen surrounds you, you can get to know your “submarine mates”

before the first course even arrives. And what a menu! In keeping with the Jules Verne theme, this meal focuses on sea and land, with alcohol used liberally in many of the bites. You get a clear idea of what you’re in for when you bite into the “macaron cocktail,” small versions of the confection infused with plenty of yummy rum. (I’ve been saying for years that I love starting a meal with something sweet. This was just what I was talking about!) Along the way, this dinner continually surprises, both with unconventional flavor profiles (Otoro tuna combined with baklava? Oh hell yes it works!) and mind-blowing presentations. (Just wait until you see how the uni is presented—and how you eat it. Trust us, your reaction to this dish is half the fun!) Davis’ blueprint is all over this dinner from start to finish, from the soundtrack, which changes depending on what is being served (The Beatles’ “Octopus’s Garden” while dining on, of course octopus, complete with a tiny sword with which to spear the delicacy), to some of the menu descriptions—“Whale” is featured on the menu with an asterisk; if you go to the bottom of the page, you’ll read in small type, “If whale is not legally available, A5 Kobe beef may be substituted.” There’s also plenty of theater to enjoy here, such as the “Pig Head” course, during which a swine is brought to a staging area upon a litter and carved—with great relish—by chef Taylor Persh, who previously worked under chef José Andrés. You can feel her pride when introducing each course; no detail is left unattended here, much like the entire Lost Spirits experience.

Vegas’ dining scene offers wine of all types You don’t have to be an educated diner to know that Las Vegas is one of the best places on the planet to enjoy wine. The sheer volume of fine dining destinations on the Strip mandates that an elite selection of labels and varietals will always be on hand. But which restaurants have the perfect combination of a stellar list and exemplary food to go with it? Many of the answers

to this question will take you off the Strip, a fact you may find surprising. At Tivoli Village on the west side of the Vegas Valley, Ada’s Wine Bar (702.462.2795) is satisfying locals with an exciting, versatile, ever-changing wine list available by the glass or bottle, a socially inclined eatery where the folks behind the bar are ready to guide you

through your next wine adventure. And you will find that the food menu is just as energetic and innovative, leaning a bit into Spanish flavors and favoring small plates perfect for sampling. Try the harissa-infused olives, Iberico chorizo croquetas, blue corn tamales or the cheese and charcuterie plates that will complement your next beverage selection.

On the other side of town at The District at Green Valley Ranch, The Local (702.665.6050) operates under the belief that great wine is for everyone, and the friendly staff is dedicated to helping visitors find new favorite flavors. Sixty different wines including sparkling and champagne, reds and whites, rosés, and dessert wines from around the world spark curiosity, and tasty snacks like bacon-wrapped dates, an Italian sandwich with prosciutto and mozzarella, and vanilla bean gelato satisfy your growing appetite as your work your way through the evening. Back in the heart of the city on the Strip, Julian Serrano’s fine-dining institution Picasso (702.693.8105) at Bellagio has long been one of Las Vegas’ premier destinations for an expertly curated tasting menu complete with wine pairing, featuring food and beverage with French and Spanish undertones. The massive, high-quality wine list stretches to nearly 1,600 options at Picasso, but don’t fret, the veteran sommelier staff will help you choose while you enjoy pan-seared scallops, sautéed Chilean sea bass with asparagus and Hollandaise, butter-poached lobster, and big eye tuna carpaccio. Another long-beloved destination for such an experience, Estiatorio Milos (702.414.1270), has settled into its new digs at The Venetian and recently launched a monthly Winemaker’s Table dinner series that beautifully explores fine wines from Greece and the Mediterranean alongside its acclaimed cuisine. Ask about it when you call for a reservation, but even if your trip isn’t perfectly timed, you can always enjoy the fruits of some of the oldest wine-producing regions in the world at Milos with its trademark fresh seafood dishes and ingredient-driven creativity. Of course, the newest wine-centric destination making noise on the Strip is at Resorts World, the Las Vegas outpost of Southern California favorite Wally’s Wine & Spirits (702.676.6966). More than 8,000 labels surround diners in this chic space, which extended its offerings earlier this month by hosting its first tequila and mezcal festival. Spirits are fun, but there’s nothing like relaxing with your best bottle with your best friends and sharing steak tartare, grilled California lamb chops, truffle pommes frites and a prosciutto di Parma-topped pizzetta. –Brock Radke

Zouk Nightclub is a hot spot for revelry and talent. Tiësto helps leads the charge.

Step inside the world of Zouk Nightclub at Resorts World Las Vegas, a world that visually and audibly delights with its innovative design, state-of-the-art technology and impressive roster of performers. Zouk Group, a pioneering nightlife institution in Singapore, traveled halfway around the globe to bring its concept to the party people of Las Vegas. The result is a 36,000-square-foot, multiroom nightclub that fully immerses clubgoers. There are multiple bars and lounge areas, each with their own stunning design, but the real magnet that will pull guests in is the main room. It’s here that the stage is set for some of the world’s most-recognized DJs and musical artists while technology dazzles the dancefloor with Zouk’s unique lighting system known as the Mothership. Re-created from Zouk Nightclub in Singapore, the behemoth Mothership produces a kaleidoscope of LED colors and visuals as it floats above and around the dancefloor, moving to the music. Between the music pumping out of one of the most technologically advanced sound systems and the interactive lighting capabilities wired throughout, guests are in for a night of pure, out-of-this-world revelry.

Zouk has called upon top talent to bring the wicked beats to the nightclub, and that includes resident DJs and musical acts as well as special-event performances that include Zedd, DJ Snake, Nervo, Cash Cash, DJ Ruckus, Duke Dumont, G-Eazy, Jack Harlow, Madison Beer, Louis the Child and more. Leading the charge is resident superstar DJ and producer Tiësto (performing May 19), one of the godfathers of electronic dance music. With his decades-long success in the EDM world, he impressively commands

the stage with his unique style and mash-up of beats flowing onto the dancefloor and keeping feet moving for hours. It’s an unforgettable experience. We recently sat down and talked with Tiësto about his residency, as well as his upcoming Electric Daisy Carnival performance this weekend and his thoughts on life and career. (And if you’ve ever wanted to know more about Tiësto, we had him answer some fun questions that’ll help you get to know the man behind the name!)

TELL US ABOUT YOUR NEW RESIDENCY AT ZOUK NIGHTCLUB. It’s been incredible. I was at Hakkasan for seven years—a long time. I was ready for a new challenge. I know Zouk from Singapore; I played that club many times. That’s the original Zouk. So when they came here to Las Vegas, I was very excited. They showed me all the plans, of the resort, of the nightclub, the pool party. I was like, “This is fresh, new.” The club has been booming. It’s packed every week. It’s incredible

because Vegas in general—the (EDM) scene has grown so much.

LET’S TALK ABOUT THE EDM SCENE. DID YOU EVER EXPECT IT TO EXPLODE THE WAY IT HAS? No; never. I remember I was (in Las Vegas) in 2007. I would play like three times a year in Vegas, and I would tell the promoters, “Man, I really love Vegas. I wish I could have a residency here one day. That would be amazing.” And they would say, “Yeah, that would be amazing, but

that’s never going to happen.” And I was like, “Yeah, that’s never gonna happen.” Now it’s the DJs’ faces that are up on the outside of the hotel buildings. I never expected it. But I’m very happy that it happened.

TELL ME A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR EARLY CAREER. WHEN IT ALL STARTED IN YOUR HOME COUNTRY, THE NETHERLANDS. Dance music was always big in Holland. It was embraced right away. I lived in the south of Holland in Belgium, and the scene was really big. On the radio they played dance music. We had our own version of MTV called TMF, The Music Factory, and they played dance music all day. It was a very healthy scene. This was around 1992-’93. I was only 18-19 years old. I worked in the club; played for six hours and played everything from house, techno, trance—I always played all styles together. That’s when I decided to go with trance because I felt that music was really hot around 1995 and really enjoyed it. And I was like, “OK, I have to pick a sound and a style, and that’s why I moved to trance.”

YOU’VE ALWAYS CHANGED YOUR STYLE, CHANGED WITH THE TIMES OR BEEN AHEAD OF THE GAME. WHY DO YOU THINK IT’S IMPORTANT TO CHANGE UP YOUR MUSICAL STYLE? It’s just a natural progress for me. When I left trance music, I was bored of it; it all started sounding the same to me. I saw all these young DJs coming up in Holland— Afrojack, David Guetta—it was fresh, the music they were making,

WHEN DID YOU DECIDE YOU WANTED TO COME TO THE U.S. AND GET INVOLVED IN THE SCENE HERE? Around 2001. Paul Oakenfold was one of the biggest DJs here in like 1999-2000 and he really helped me a lot. He promoted my name a lot in the U.S. He told all the club owners, “You gotta book Tiësto; he’s gonna be the next big thing.” My first tour here was in 2000—it was my first club tour. Then in 2001, I did the big Area2 Tour with Moby, Carl Cox, John Digweed—that was a big tour for me. We played the whole country. And that’s when I was like, “Man, I love it here!”

ANY LESSONS YOU’VE LEARNED BEING IN THE INDUSTRY? The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that you shouldn’t stress about anything. Just really enjoy what you’re doing; enjoy the moments. If you worry too much about what can happen, you can hold yourself back. And if you listen too much to the crowds you can get lost as well, so you have to go with your own gut feeling. Keep following your heart and what you want to do.

look back at Avicii, the melodies he used and the sounds he used were so untraditional, but that made him special and I see this with new, upcoming DJs—they’re coming up with stuff that’s new and fresh, which they really love to do.

ANY NEW PROJECTS IN THE WORKS? My next single is almost finished. I’m trying to finish my album to come out this year, around September/ October. I’m going to release a couple nice real Tiësto bangers. I think one more big radio single.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR UPCOMING EDC PERFORMANCE. EDC is always special to me. I’ve done it every year since it moved to Las Vegas; that was the start for me. It’s been incredible. I love the stage there—it’s so massive, but it still feels intimate in a way. Everyone’s there appreciating the music. Because I’ve been in the business for so long, nowadays I’m going back to my roots, where before I was the trance DJ. I’m going back to how I used to play in the clubs for six hours, where I’m playing a little bit of everything. I’ve been doing that

ANY ADVICE FOR THE NEXT GENERATION? Just love and embrace what you want to do and really don’t do it because you think you’re going to be famous. Just do what you love, then you become the biggest because you don’t have any boundaries. If I

at Zouk, too. I play house, techno, trance, pop music in a Tiësto remix— it’s really nice to play like that. My EDC set will be like that. Main stage, Saturday night, midnight—crowds want to hear a bit of everything. I’m going to play some old EDM classics, a couple of trance records, house records, big Tiësto bangers, remixes.

AFTER ALL THESE YEARS, DO YOU STILL GET

BUTTERFLIES WHEN YOU STEP ONSTAGE? Yeah. And I think the year off with COVID, it humbled me in the sense that I really missed DJing, when you go onstage, and the crowd appreciates what you do. You play your first track, and the crowd goes crazy. It’s a feeling that you can never replace with anything else. I’m addicted to that feeling. It never gets old.

Carlos Santana’s long history of collaboration leads to incredible shows By Matt Kelemen

Much has been written about Carlos Santana’s guitar sound. It’s instantly recognizable to several generations and has graced hits every decade since 1969 when his eponymous band Santana released its debut album and made an iconic appearance at Woodstock that would be preserved on film. He pioneered a singing, stinging sustained electric tone channeled through Gibson (and later PRS) guitars, and phrasing that seemed conjured more than picked.

Thomas are in the supporting cast, with Steve Winwood providing vocals in a cover of “Whiter Shade of Pale.” Former Fifth Harmony member Brooke also contributed vocals to Santana’s latest single “Yo Estaré,” the Spanish version of album track “Break.” An overt family reference on Blessings is “Song for Cindy,” a dreamy musical portrait of his wife and favorite drummer Cindy Blackman Santana. The song, co-produced with Narada Michael Walden, is Santana’s best example of melodic tone on the album. It’s brief, fueled by passion and power, and exemplifies his effective use of wah pedal to set his six-string runs ablaze. Blessings features compositions from Santana’s children, with Salvador Santana contributing rhythm heavy “Rumbalero” and Stella Santana co-writing ballad “Breathing Underwater” with Avi Snow and MVCA as well as contributing vocals. Thomas, a chart-success godsend to Santana, is back for sly, bombastic “Move,” and an argument can be made that Santana’s fluid, flurrying style is a precurHouse of Blues sor to the supercharged at Mandalay Bay playing of Hammett, who 702.632.7600 makes his second guest appearance on a Santana album with “America for Santana refers to “the Sale.” The Metallica guitarist value of one note” in an pulls the diverse album in a October 2020 edition of Rick heavy direction with help from Death Rubin’s Broken Record podcast, Angel singer Mark Osegueda. where he describes playing in bands led by Santana has cited many musical inspirahis violinist father. The Doobie Brothers bring many eras of hits together for their 50th anniversary They started out playing boogie for bikers before charting the course for what would become known as “yacht rock.” Now the Doobie Brothers have granted a ’70s music fan’s wish by bringing the signature vocalists from both eras together for a 50th anniversary tour. As an indication of demand, Michael McDonald and Tom Johnston are sharing the stage at Zappos Theater inside Planet Hollywood Resort for an extended run. This had long seemed improbable. McDonald had no reason to divert from his successful solo career. Johnston had overcome the decline in health that led to his leaving the band in the mid-’70s and resumed touring with the Doobies in 1987. There was no animosity between the singers, so all that really seemed to matter was if McDonald wanted to help celebrate the golden anniversary of the group that made him famous. He agreed before plans were put on pandemic hold. In the ensuing time Johnston, founding member Patrick Simmons and McDonald-era multi-instrumentalist John McFee hit the studio to record the latest Doobies album Liberté, which was released last year. Johnston and Simmons also prepared the band’s autobiography, alternating chapters as they told the tale of The Doobie Brothers. (Long Train Runnin’ was set to be released three days before the beginning of the Las Vegas engagement.) Johnston and fingerstyle guitarist Simmons co-founded the band in 1970, becoming popular on Northern California’s live circuit and a favorite of the Hells Angels. The name, inspired by slang for a cannabis joint, was meant to be permanent but was locked in for good when The Doobie Brothers were discovered by Warner Bros. A&R rep Ted Templeman. The band developed the early sound with Templeman, who would nurture Van Halen with Doobies engineer Donn Landee, adding rustic touches of country and gospel influences on songs such as “Listen to the Music” and “Jesus Is Just Alright” from 1972’s Toulouse Street. Bassist Tiran Porter, an ex-bandmate of Simmons, brought his baritone to the mix and completed the classic vocal harmony sound of the Doobies’ early period. Hits such as “China Grove” and “Black Water” led to phenomenal success, but Johnston was eventually sidelined by a stomach ulcer condition that had plagued him since high school. Enter Steely Dan studio musicians Jeff Baxter on guitar and Michael McDonald on keyboards and vocals, and a new direction largely characterized by McDonald’s blue-eyed soul sound. “Takin’ It to the Streets,” “What a Fool Believes” and “Minute by Minute” set the stage for soft rock, but Act 2 of the Doobies’ career ended in 1982, with Johnston joining the band for “China Grove” at their final concert. By 1987, Johnston was healthy enough to rejoin the band, minus McDonald, and the Doobies have been back ever since. Simmons and McFee are master musicians, the harmonies are on point, and being able to catch Johnston and McDonald trading off lead vocals live in concert is a buzz any classic rock fan would want to catch.
