NOTES
From the Editor There Is Only One
It really isn’t up for dispute: Cirque du Soleil singlehandedly changed the entertainment landscape forever in Las Vegas. The Canadian-based troupe landed here with the biggest of splashes in 1993 with Mystère and never looked back, proceeding to open some of the most famous productions the Strip has ever seen: “O” at Bellagio, KÀ at MGM Grand, The Beatles LOVE at The Mirage and Michael Jackson ONE at Mandalay Bay. Over the years, there have been many imitators, but all they did is prove one thing: There is only one Cirque. Many fans of the adults-only Cirque revue Zumanity at New York-New York were very upset when the show closed permanently during the pandemic shutdown, but the space that housed that show is finally being reopened—and with an entirely new Cirque du Soleil concept: Mad Apple, a tribute to New York City’s vibrant scene. Editor at large Brock Radke details the show, and my incredible art team—Wes Gatbonton, Christina Trimidal and Christopher DeVargas—captures the singular look of the show in this week’s issue (“Fruits of Hard Work,” p. 30). Find out why Cirque du Soleil continues to both surprise and change the game. And that’s just the start of the entertainment bonanza you'll find in this week’s issue. Fans of Jonas Brothers no
doubt already have tickets for their highly anticipated return to Las Vegas, as they prepare to perform at Dolby Live at Park MGM (“Good Things Come in Threes,” p. 34). Adults-only production shows are front and center this week, from a profile of Mariah Rivera, both a performer in (and co-producer of) the long-running smash show Fantasy at Luxor (“All the Right Moves,” p. 38), to a Q&A with Vincent Marini, executive producer of Magic Mike Live Las Vegas at Sahara Las Vegas, who talks about the show’s success and future (“Strong Message,” p. 32). Westgate Las Vegas promises off-the-chart fun with tenor Alfie Boe, who performs two nights at its International Theater (“Voice for the Ages,” p. 11). And America’s Got Talent's Tape Face continues to produce huge laughs with ordinary household materials at his show at Harrah's (“The Eyes Have It,” p. 12). If you’re a fan of gorgeous homes (really, who isn’t?) you'll definitely want to check out our LVing feature this week, which features a home in the ultra-exclusive Ridges at Summerlin (“Spacious Beauty,” p. 44). In town for Memorial Day Weekend? Associate editor Kiko Miyasato has some fun options for you (“Keep the Party Going,” p. 22). Now get out there and have fun—we recommend starting with a Cirque show!

Impressive Puppetry The Las Vegas Strip is populated with America’s Got Talent contestants, but Terry Fator was the first. His skill as a singer, ventriloquist and impersonator—quite the trifecta—is unmatched on the Las Vegas Strip. What adds to the entertainment value of Fator’s show, Who’s the Dummy Now?, is

the unique personality all his dummies have. There’s Elvis impersonator Maynard Thompkins, who keeps getting ready to perform but can never seem to actually do so; Duggie Scott Walker, a very chill dude who would have been great friends with Cheech & Chong (if you know what we mean); and Walter T.
Airdale, a country singer who can never seem to remember how many ex-wives he has. As much as you’ll remember Fator’s impersonations, you’ll remember the puppets. Fator is also careful to alternate puppets from show to show, almost guaranteeing you’ll never see the same show twice. –Ken Miller

A Wild Romp
Variety show combines talent and raunchy humor You want to take a trip to the naughty side of the Wild West? The raunchy, racy, rambunctious ride that is Atomic Saloon Show invites guests to leave inhibitions in the desert dust and boot-scoot into a world of talent, comedy and off-the-wall fun. Cursing? It’s got that—lots of that, like realdown-and-dirty stuff that would make even Richard Pryor and George Carlin blush. Comedy? You’ll split your pants and possibly spew out your drink from laughing so hard. Talent? You’ll be up to your teeth in it. Your host for the evening, and proprietor of the “saloon,” is Boozy Skunkton.

Her bright red hair isn’t the only thing that’s fired up—her acerbic tongue seems to get her in trouble at every turn; but she has an indescribable charm. Another charmer in the show is singing cowboy Blue Jackson, who uses his guitar to serenade with the most inappropriate lyrics and dance moves. When it comes to physical talents, the audience is treated to a grab bag of vignettes. Ever seen someone hula hoop? How about hula hooping with dozens of hoops? Aerial acts amaze with both solo and duo performances. Feats of strength push the limits, with a duo demonstrat-
ing how muscle and balance can create amazing poses. Pole dancing? Yup, that’s here, too. The theater in the round brings to the stage some slapstick moments—one involving some demure nuns who perform some quite shocking but hysterical acts with ping pong balls. And, Boozy’s cousins perform a kind-of rap number that elicits laughter and applause. The ending of this Wild West hoedown is an all-out saloon brawl with the entire cast. –Kiko Miyasato (Turn to page 20 to learn all about the show’s director of front-of-house operations, Jami Jones.)

Voice for the Ages He’s performed at some of the world’s most prominent venues, and this week Tony Award-winning singer Alfie Boe brings his musical stylings to Las Vegas. Best of all, he’s performing at the Westgate Las Vegas, and his show will feature music from some of the greatest entertainers of all time who have played that property’s International Theater in the past—including Elvis Presley and Wayne Newton. The tenor and actor has worked mostly in the United Kingdom, where he has sold more than 1 million albums and garnered infinite praise for his work in such projects as Les Miserables and La Boheme. “I am delighted to be playing Las Vegas. It’s been a dream of mine ever since I was a kid, so this is beyond exciting,” said Boe in a prepared statement. “I just want everyone to come along and party with me! It’s a space to let go for the night, sing along to some all-time favorite hit songs from Broadway to chart-toppers and some real classics. Joining forces with the Westgate Las Vegas is an honor on a stage that has been home to so many legendary artists over the years.” –Ken Miller Westgate Las Vegas, June 3-4, westgatelasvegas.com
Muy Delicioso! If there’s one cuisine we could eat every day, it’s Mexican food—the flavors, the meats, the margaritas, the chips and salsa … OK, we’ve gotta stop! And if you find yourself in Henderson during your visit, make sure to satisfy your South-of-the-border cravings at Borracha Mexican Cantina. Whether you want street tacos, burritos or some slow-roasted pork carnitas, you’ll be savoring every bite here. And vegetarians will find plenty to enjoy, too. –Ken Miller Green Valley Ranch, 702.617.7075

Witty Relatablility Of the four stand-up comedians who made up the original Blue Collar Comedy Tour (Jeff Foxworthy, Bill Engvall, Larry the Cable Guy and Ron White), White has perhaps gone the farthest from catchphrases and Southern stereotypes. You won’t hear many references to “tater salad” in White’s current material, despite “They call me tater salad” being perhaps his most wellknown catchphrase.
White still has his Southern twang and unpretentious attitude, but his comedy has become more wide-ranging as his success has afforded him opportunities. He’s still self-deprecating enough to be relatable, though, and his material about marriage hits home with a lot of his audience. Whatever color your collar, White hits your funny bone. –Las Vegas Magazine Staff The Mirage, 16+, 702.792.7777

The Eyes Have It
Comedy mime’s show celebrates simplicity The atmosphere at a Tape Face show is infectious—before the craziness even ensues, Face’s “assistant” Phyllis Vanillis walks slowly onstage, moving various boxes while stopping to stare at the crowd, occasionally winking or waving. She also lays down the ground rules for the evening: Tape Face will be selecting audience members at random as part of his show; if and when you are selected, play along—don’t be a jerk. (The actual word she uses is a bit more colorful, but this is a family magazine!) You quickly realize how integral audience participation is to a Tape Face show. During the course of his 60-or-so minutes onstage,

he selects more than a dozen “volunteers” by quickly pacing up and down the aisles of Harrah’s Cabaret and pointing to his selection. Once the selectees take the stage, they’re guided to a hand-sanitizing station by Phyllis and greeted by a one-liner. (“Are you Wi-Fi? ’Cause I’m sensing a connection!) Then it’s all in Tape Face’s capable hands. As he reaches into his bag of tricks, you never know what will emerge. It might be a tape measure; it might be a hair dryer; it might be a fly swatter. Most times you will not see the punchline until the very last second, but when it hits you, it hits hard. As funny as the bits themselves are, often
it’s the reactions of Tape Face’s volunteers that provide the most laughs. He also has solo bits, many of which will be familiar to America’s Got Talent fans who watched him become an star in real time. But whether he’s performing alone or with an audience member, there’s one common thread: Pure, unbridled enjoyment, a realization that, no matter how different our views may be, at heart we all just want to enjoy life’s simple pleasures. Need proof? As you’re batting balloons around at the end of the show, we dare you to not have the biggest smile ever on your face. –Ken Miller Harrah’s, 702.777.2782

Glovin’ It
They won’t stop ’til you get enough During his lifetime, Michael Jackson exuded a childlike wonder, an attitude that proved infectious for his millions of fans. That same sense of wonder pervades each and every second of Cirque du Soleil’s Michael Jackson ONE, a celebration of The Gloved One’s music, legacy, philosophy and persona, achieved through a combination of dance, acrobatics, special effects, comic performances and, especially, those timeless songs. The show is a series of vignettes tied together loosely by four young “misfits” who are pursued by baddies as they attempt to “save” Jackson’s music, rushing in and out of segments, some-

times participating in the activity onstage, from bungee acrobatics during “Beat It” to some hilarious pantomime as Jackson’s glove seemingly comes to life during “Working Day and Night.” Elsewhere, there’s so much to look at and enjoy while looking forward to the next Jackson number—from dancers who come to electric life through the use of LED costumes during “Billie Jean” and trampoline artists who appear to defy gravity during “Thriller” to incredibly synchronized dance routines to both “They Don’t Care About Us” and “Smooth Criminal” (And, yes, that famous “lean” makes an appearance during the latter song, and yes, it’s electrifying.)
Sprinkled through these bits are pictures of Jackson throughout the various stages of his life and career, coupled with the music he was performing at the time—“I’ll Be There” as a member of the famed Jackson 5 is particularly affecting— and profound words he had for the world. The action climaxes in an amazing hologram sequence, with Jackson appearing alongside the misfits for a performance of “Man in the Mirror,” disappearing at key moments and reappearing at others; it’s a sobering reminder that Jackson is no longer with us, but the entire production is a reminder that the impact of his music will continue to touch and inspire. –Ken Miller

Jami Jones
Stepping offstage, but still in the spotlight While Jami Jones might not be dancing onstage anymore, the Northern Virginia native hasn’t strayed too far away from the spotlight. Jones serves as director of front-of-house operations for the bawdy, talent-filled variety show Atomic Saloon Show at The Venetian and The Palazzo. Jones had a long career in both entertainment and hospitality before joining the show in 2019. In her home state, she pursued dancing, specifically Middle Eastern belly dancing, which eventually led to professional and competitive ballroom dancing. While training in New York City, Jones auditioned for a show in Las Vegas, landing the role in Le Rêve at Wynn and moving to town in 2006. After three years there, she decided to take a break from performing and enrolled in TISHO: The International School of Hospitality and pursued a career off the stage. “Las Vegas is just unparalleled, especially for someone who loves entertainment, hospitality
and the arts–you really can’t get this level in another city,” she says. After developing her skills through roles in special events management, hospitality and production, and even working as the festival manager for the Las Vegas Film Festival, Jones joined Atomic Saloon. Guests can catch her running around the theater—helping and greeting guests, taking care of VIPs, organizing special events, making sure the bars are fully operational and watching over the front-ofhouse operations from open to close of the show. “We’re a really rowdy, fun, raucous show,” Jones says. But does she ever miss dancing and performing onstage? “Sometimes I still perform a couple times a year, just fun dancing side gigs and events,” she says. “But part of the performance I feel I’m still living is in this front-of-house experience. I love the connection I can still have with my guests.” –Kiko Miyasato

NOSH CHEERS Tapas are incredibly flavorful, small bites that use high-quality ingredients. They are frequently enjoyed with a drink or cocktail, and you will leave that restaurant feeling incredibly satiated. Such is the case with Julian Serrano Tapas, a bright, colorful restaurant with a vivacious bar and a chill, elegant dining room. As you would expect with a tapas bar, the bar is a huge draw, with plenty of seating creating a convivial atmosphere, as well as plenty of TV screens. Pass-throughs from the kitchens bustle with activity behind and near the bar. The dining room features long banquette seating and cushy upholstered chairs. You’ll find a variety of cocktails on the menu such as the Piña Smash, a peppy sip with vodka, pineapple, lemon and mint. But the berry sangria is as attractive as it is delicious, with assorted fruits in muscat. There is really no set way to order, although the menu does group dishes into starters and classic dishes. I recommend starting with a cheese platter—Julian Serrano’s version comes with a changing selection of melt-in-your-mouth cheeses, pickled peppers, nuts and fruit jam. Just amazing. You can also get acorn-fed Iberico ham, or order one of the imported Spanish tins of seafood with bread, tomato, lemon and salt—choose from anchovies, yellowfin tuna, sardines and more. The beauty of tapas is also simply the sheer variety of offerings, from brava potatoes, a staple on every tapas menu, to seared scallops with apple butter and caramelized apple. béchamel; and bombas are like small, round, elevated potato cakes with goat cheese inside. Tenderloin albondingas (meatballs) are accented with a smooth tomato sauce; cochinillo brings crispy roasted suckling pig to the table (order the whole cochinillo for a carnivorous showstopper). There are even slightly larger dishes such as the surf and turf, featuring a filet, lobster and a mushroom demiglace; another version of this features shrimp. If you are a paella fan, Julian Serrano offers four varieties, but you must order them early, as they can take 45 minutes to an hour to prepare. The Valencia paella combines chicken, chorizo, morcilla (Spanish blood sausage), vegetables and saffron; the mixta paella adds in seafood like mussels, shrimp and lobster, plus chicken and chorizo. You can also get one featuring vegetable and another with calamari. Each paella can feed two, but larger sizes are available. If you’ve ordered all the savory dishes you desire but wish for a sweet ending, try the churros with spicy hot chocolate. You won’t regret it.

Try the imaginative cauliflower ceviche, a hearty torta with your choice of fillings, a birria platter made with a blend of jackfruit and Beyond Meat, or the spicy mushroom asada tacos. Heirloom corn is used to make the in-house, stone-ground masa and tortillas here, adding authentic old-world charm to the simple menu of tacos and bowls and traditional favorites like chilaquiles, ceviche and tetelas—pockets of masa stuffed with vegetables, cheese, savory black beans and more. For brunch, try the blue corn pinole pancakes with berry compote and piloncillo syrup; for lunch, it’s all about short rib barbacoa, slow-roasted with pasilla and guajillo chili peppers. Hola Mexican Cocina & Cantina (702.202.6489) is one of the newest restaurants in this genre to grab its share of local buzz, satisfying residents in the Southern Highlands neighborhood and attracting other curious culinarians. The modern Mexican menu puts an interesting twist on family recipes, offering up vibrant dishes like dirty guacamole with crispy chorizo and chicharrones; quesadillas
stuffed with steak and chimichurri; and a pork belly and carnitas burrito augmented with guac and serrano chilies. Say hello to some fabulous cocktails, too, including a cherry-lime mezcal margarita or a classic grapefruit paloma. The city has off-Strip restaurants that attract Vegas visitors, but the resorts along Las Vegas Boulevard also offer Mexican eateries that local residents love to visit as well. At Aria, Javier’s (702.590.3637) fits that bill, so much so that you’ll probably run into some local restaurant, nightlife or hospitality workers when you sidle up to the bar for a scratch margarita and a quick bite of queso fundido or chicken taquitos during happy hour. This hot spot is definitely worth a reservation for the full experience, as it boasts one of the most distinguished dining rooms on the Strip. Start with octopus or ahi tuna ceviche, share some skirt steak fajitas with the table, and explore the other seafood specialties such as Dungeness crab enchiladas in tomatillo sauce, wild Mexican white prawns in garlic and butter or scallops sautéed with asparagus in a creamy chipotle sauce. CIRQUE DU SOLEIL’S magical productions on the Las Vegas Strip celebrate classic elements of circus, avant-garde artistry and some of the most famous music in the world. But the company’s new show breaks ground by celebrating a place. And not just any place. Mad Apple is an energetic tribute to all things New York City, appropriately performed in the gorgeous, 1,200-seat theater at New York-New York Hotel & Casino. Loaded with acrobatics, music and comedy, Mad Apple began preview performances earlier this month and marks its grand opening just before Memorial Day weekend. “It’s a fun night out and a celebration, a great place to come have a drink and enjoy some incredible entertainment inspired by the greatest performers in the history of New York,” said producer Simon Painter. Mad Apple was designed to blur the lines between circus,
LAS VEGAS MAGAZINE
live entertainment and the nightlife culture of the iconic city. The spectacular acrobatics we know so well from Cirque du Soleil are a major part of the show, Painter said, but so is stand-up—from a variety of performers including star and host Brad Williams—and music, recalling artists from Billy Joel and Run-D.M.C. to George Gershwin and Lady Gaga. “The soundtrack of New York City is really central to this show, and we have some unbelievable singers who really made me say, ‘Wow!’ many times when I auditioned them,” Painter said. “Acrobatically, it’s still really strong, and that talent should stand on its own. And yes, there is some more adult comedy. It’s a bloody fun night out, but it’s also a beautiful show.” Williams is a familiar face for Las Vegas audiences, a comedy powerhouse who has performed at various venues on and off the Strip. Mad Apple is an entirely different adventure
for him, which is why he’s so excited about it. “Even if you’re used to seeing other Cirque shows, which are spectacular, this is special, because normally you’d have to go to different shows to see comedy, acrobatics and music like this,” Williams said. “Now you can go to Mad Apple and see all of that, and it obviously works with the whole theme at New York-New York. I feel like anything can happen in that city, and it’ll be the same for this show.” The unique space has been renovated to bring the audience closer to the performers than ever before in a Cirque show, adding interactive elements. Don’t be late to this one; you’ll miss the exciting preshow that incorporates the brand-new bars that have been installed in and around the theater. “I would put the preshow up against any show in Las Vegas—magicians walking around the theater doing incredible magic before the show even starts, and a bar where you can walk up and get a drink, which will morph into the stage,” Williams said. “If that doesn’t start things out with a bang, I don’t know what will.”

It’s been five years since Magic Mike Live made its electrifying debut in Las Vegas. Back then it was at the Hard Rock Hotel, which has transformed into Virgin Hotels Las Vegas, but in August 2021, it reopened in a new, custom theater at Sahara Las Vegas. It’s hard to believe. Since then we’ve done shows in London, Berlin and Australia, then again in Las Vegas after the (pandemic), and it really doesn’t seem like that long ago when we were there with Channing (Tatum) putting the first show together. It’s surreal.
Plenty of people want to see (TV show winners) Nate (Bryan) and Johnny (Dutch), but I think it’s more than that, it’s just taken the awareness of the live show to another level. The HBO show has opened people up that otherwise didn’t know about Magic Mike Live, and it’s had a huge impact on our success and hopefully the upcoming film and what will hopefully be a second season of that series will continue to do the same.
That is the idea. We spoke to a lot of different properties and had some unique opportunities, but I don’t know if there was another property where we felt like we could be the center of their universe. (Sahara) looked at this show that really is different and pretty unique among other shows in the
(The filmmakers) have said the third movie in many ways is inspired by the live show. I know it inspired a lot of their thinking about how to structure it. I’m really excited to see what they have in store and they’re shooting the film now in the U.K.
There have been a lot of people recently coming to see it that I think otherwise may not have come, and they have a better understanding of what the message of the show is. It’s rare to find something that much fun that also has a powerful and empowering message. We do a pretty good job of exceeding expectations when you walk in that room, and I tell people it’s the most fun you’re going to have in 90 minutes. I’ve seen it hundreds of times and it’s still a lot of fun.

The Jonas Brothers had plenty of time to evaluate whether they would continue as a band after they wrapped their Remember This Tour last October at the Hollywood Bowl. Kevin, Joe and Nick had reunited in 2019, just in time to set up a Las Vegas limited engagement that
would be canceled by coronavirus. But good news for those who were looking forward to the Vegas shows: They’re back on. For five dates over two weekends Jonas Brothers: Live in Vegas takes over Dolby Live. The Park MGM venue was where they kicked off the tour in August,

performing a concert in four acts. Three of those were dedicated to individual brothers, giving Joe a chance to front the band for DNCE hit “Cake by the Ocean” and Nick to perform solo hits “Mercy” and “Close.” Joe was given a little leeway to forget a lyric or two at the onset of the tour, but now they’re once again finely tuned as an act and as musicians. That’s pretty much how they started out when they became public figures in the mid-2000s. Before their video for pop-punk nugget “Year 3000” went into heavy rotation on The Disney Channel, the boys had grown up in New Jersey with musically nurturing parents. Their father’s position as an Assemblies of God minister meant they were destined to perform before his congregation, but fate struck when youngest future brother Nick was overheard bursting into song at a barbershop by a customer with Broadway connections. That led to musical theater for Nick, while Joe’s big break came when he was cast as a lead in Disney film Camp Rock. A family discussion led to a proposition that all three brothers be featured, and the Jonas

Brothers’ future as a famous musical act was set in stone. Attendance at midnight album release parties of their polished pop increased exponentially until barricades were needed to control crowds. They scored a Top Five hit in 2008 with “Burnin’ Up” from A Little Bit Longer, but the No. 1 spot evaded them. Largely their own creation and one of the first acts to build success with hands-on control of their social media, the JoBros had to fight the perception that they were a Disney fabrication. They were ostracized from their church for being too secular, then roasted by seculars for maintaining their morals. Disillusion inevitably set in. In 2013, Nick relayed his feelings to his brothers with a succinct, “The Jonas Brothers should be no more,” and the Jonas Brothers were no more. They pursued solo projects. Joe pursued Gigi Hadid. Joe married actress Sophie Turner in Las Vegas in 2019. Now they are all devoted husbands, fathers and bandmembers. “Sucker,” the opening track on 2019 album Happiness Begins, debuted at No. 1 and the Remember This Tour was a financial success. By the time the residency starts, their restaurant, Nellie’s Southern Kitchen, is scheduled to be open at MGM Grand, which might be the best place to sight a Jonas in early June.

Beefsteak tomato tartare at Bazaar Meat by José Andrés
By Ken Miller
Steak tartare is a dish whose time has arrived .40. 5.29.22 LAS VEGAS MAGAZINE
Steak tartare used to be the Rodney Dangerfield of the food world—it got no respect. In fact, it spent quite a lot of time being the brunt of jokes, including a particularly cruel bit courtesy of Mr. Bean, in which the titular character spends his entire meal trying to hide the dish in question wherever he can find space on the table, rather than just telling his server he really doesn’t want to eat it. Those days are fully in the rear-view mirror. Savvy diners know that not only is

steak tartare a must-try dish at higher-end restaurants, it can often define the dining experience. On its face, the dish can seem deceptively simple: It’s traditionally made with raw ground beef and served with any number of ingredients, from onions and Worcestershire sauce to capers and pepper. But take one bite of steak tartare at any of Las Vegas’ top steakhouses, and you’ll realize that description falls short. The only limits to steak tartare here are the chefs’ imaginations. There’s the sublime Prime steak tartare at Aria’s Bardot Brasserie, a visual feast with its orange egg yolk seeping into every crevice of the dish. A small bit of sauce verte (green sauce) adds just a bit more color and flavor, and the deep flavors of the meat pair perfectly with house-made waffle fries. Bazaar Meat by José Andrés at Sahara Las Vegas has a fantastic selection of tartares, each more inventive than the next. As good as Vittore 1950 is (small medallions of flawless tenderloin with black pepper, Parmesan, capers, brown-butter croutons and sherry dressing), fans—and especially vegetarians—will want to dive into Andrés’ beefsteak tomato tartare, which looks like the real thing but is a taste sensation all its own. Flavored with balsamic vinegar, cucumber and black olive, it will have you asking, “How did he do this?” Hank’s Fine Steaks & Martinis at Green Valley Ranch provides an excellent wagyu beef tartare for its happy hour, and you won’t be happier than when you’re experiencing the flavor sensations of quail egg yolk and smoked paprika aioli on some toasted brioche. You might not expect to find great steak tartare at an Italian restaurant; you would be dead wrong! Brera Osteria at The Venetian, which pays tribute to the famous Milan neighborhood, serves up a delicious version, using American wagyu beef, anchovies, capers, shallots and mayonnaise. Certainly not the least on this list is the hand-cut Prime beef tartare at Bugsy & Meyer’s Steakhouse at Flamingo. It’s easily one of the best things on the menu, served with a truffle crème fraîche and pan-toasted country bread. Odds are you’ll be fighting your dining companions for that last scoop.
