NOTES
From the Editor A Reason to Celebrate
Who doesn’t like to celebrate anniversaries? They are always cause for celebration, whether it’s your 10th year of marriage, your 15th year at a job or your trivia team’s 20th year of dominating the competition at your local pub. There are so many different ways to celebrate anniversaries, and Las Vegas is certainly no different in that respect. One of our city’s top entertainment options is celebrating a very special anniversary this month: Jen Kramer, who’s been astounding audiences with her sleight-of-hand in The Magic of Jen Kramer at Westgate Las Vegas (“Magic Number,” p. 36); this month, Kramer performs her 500th show at the popular property. And here’s the best part: Her show is incredibly family-friendly, so buy some tickets for the whole gang and you can help her enjoy this milestone. This week’s issue of Las Vegas Magazine has plenty of other rundowns on various entertainment options. Photography buffs will absolutely flip when they check out Rarely Seen at Bally’s, an exhibition of some of National Geographic’s greatest images of far-flung corners of the world (“Picture This,” p. 30). It’s awe-inspiring and educational at the same time. One of the Strip’s most iconic productions is Cirque du Soleil’s “O” at Bellagio.
I recently got a chance to enjoy the La Grande Expérience, in which you get to view the show in a completely different way. To call this the VIP treatment is underselling it considerably. Check out my overview of an offering everyone should try to enjoy at least once (“Drink It In,” p. 32). Meanwhile, over at Rio, magician and comedian Michael Carbonaro is holding court at Penn & Teller’s theater while the famous duo is performing in Australia. Even if you’ve seen plenty of the entertainer’s truTV Show, The Carbonaro Effect, you’ll still be plenty surprised at what he pulls off in his live show. Check out editor at large Brock Radke’s Q&A (“Man of Mischief,” p. 38). Don’t forget about dinner! We’ve lined up some great options for the whole family, like Andiamo Steakhouse at The D (“A Time to Remember,” p. 24) and The Boss Cafe by Buddy Valastro at The Linq Hotel (“Scenes From an Italian Deli,” p .14). And make sure to grab a cocktail, too! Carversteak at Resorts World Las Vegas has a fantastic lineup you’ll want to check out (“Sips to Savor,” p. 22). Maybe you’re in town celebrating an anniversary of your own. If so, congratulations! We’re glad our magazine can help you find ways to make it a special one.

A Mind, Soul and Body Adventure Resorts World spa offers an array of wellness experiences The journey through Awana Spa & Wellness can be both solitary and communal—that’s the beauty of the Strip’s newest spa at Resorts World. “The journey starts with the architecture of the space,” says Jennifer Lynn, director of spa and fitness. “The spa was designed with sacred geometry in mind; there’s a lot of repeating circular patterns throughout. If you’ve ever been in a beautiful museum or church and it moved you just from the space, that’s probably because there was sacred geometry designing the space—it speaks to us at a deeper level, a soul level.” Next on the Awana journey is its communal aspect—a part of the spa called The Fountain of Youth. Within this co-ed space, guests relax, recharge and socialize in six vitality pools, the event sauna, tepidarium chairs, cool mist show-

ers, experiential rain walk, heated crystal laconium room and vapor-filled steam rooms. “Our spa is designed to be social,” Lynn says. “Social wellness is part of human wellness. … There’s that community connection. It’s appropriate because we’ve been in a social-distancing atmosphere for so long, so let’s drop the walls and let’s get reconnected to our spirit, which is being socially connected and thriving in that atmosphere.” It’s also in this area that one of the mostunique spa experiences takes place—the Art of Aufguss. Inside the event sauna, Sauna Meisters perform a variety of journeys that use heat, meditation, dance, aromatherapy, music and lighting to guide guests through a transformative experience. This treatment, as well as the entire Fountain of Youth space, can be enjoyed when you purchase a Fountain of Youth passport.
(Guests who book a treatment automatically get access to Fountain of Youth.) When it comes to healing and wellness, there’s a long list of globally inspired treatments, from massages, facials and foot care to stretch and recovery. Some of Lynn’s suggestions include the Bangkok Thai Wellness massage, which stretches, compresses and restores the entire body; the Into the Redwoods, a massage that grounds and connects the spirit and body using essential oils, mud mask, scalp massage and more; and the Radiance Facial With Dermaplane, a favorite that removes impurities and dead skin, leaving a healthy, hydrated glow. Awana also offers separate men’s and women’s areas, couples’ suites and a therapy zone perfect for pre- and post-workout, with trainers available to assist. –Kiko Miyasato

You simply cannot separate Las Vegas from Wayne Newton; one is not the same without the other. And that’s why his show, Wayne: Up Close and Personal, at the Flamingo’s intimate Bugsy’s Cabaret theater space, is so significant—every performance is making more history. Never before have his fans had such access and proximity to this legendary entertainer, and he’s going out of his way to connect with every member of the audience. He’s one of those rare artists who attracts fans of varied generations, too. Consider that an entire new audience fell in love with his signature song, “Danke Schoen,” after Matthew Broderick lip-synced the hit while crashing a parade in 1986 flick Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Newton is definitely revisiting that track in his Flamingo show, as well as favorites like “Red Roses for a Blue Lady,” “Summer Wind,” and “Daddy Don’t You Walk So Fast.” He shares some archival videos with highlights and personal moments from a life onstage, and allows plenty of time for audience questions and requests. Wayne: Up Close and Personal is aptly named and almost makes you feel like you’ve been friends with this superstar for years. –Brock Radke
Buon Appetito It’s a sampling of Italian-focused flavors and a show when you dine at Lago by Julian Serrano. The dining room, with an open-air patio, overlooks one of the city’s most-famous attractions—the Fountains of Bellagio. (Ask about snagging a patio table when you make your reservation so you can get a front-row seat to the fountains). Here, it’s small plates loaded with big flavors. Antipasto and a raw bar get the meal started, followed by mains that focus
on meat, fish, pasta and risotto. There are even plentiful vegetarian options and larger plates like osso buco, whole lobster and baked whole branzino. Lago is also a hot spot for brunch, Friday through Sunday. Enjoying a mimosa with lobster Benedict, bananas Foster pancakes, or steak and eggs while watching the beautiful fountains perform is a Las Vegas experience to remember. –Kiko Miyasato Bellagio, 702.693.8865

At True Food Kitchen in The Forum Shops at Caesars, you’ll find a range of healthy, enticing dishes that will satisfy. And no matter your dietary concern, you’ll find something here; for instance, the teriyaki quinoa bowl is gluten-free and vegan, while the popular Ancient Grains bowl, with its savory miso-sesame glazed sweet potato, is vegan. Pizzas include a vegan spinach-mushroom pie with almond ricotta. For entrées, opt for a vegan double cheeseburger, or a grass-fed beef burger, turkey burgers and grilled chicken sandwiches. Lighten the Mood Illuminarium was too big to fit inside AREA15’s main building. The latest immersive venue to open at the experiential campus just west of the Strip needed 36,000 square feet for its next-level, cinematographically interactive destination, necessitating a building of its own. Illuminarium’s colorful exterior contrasts strikingly with its surroundings. Inside, a menu of programs is offered in the lobby. Once a program is chosen, a warm-up room, divided by two rows of plush white chairs that would not look out of place in a Stanley Kubrick film, provides a preview of what is to come. Floral imagery from its O’KEEFFE: One Hundred Flowers program can be projected onto walls and segue into an Apollo rocket launch lifted from SPACE: A Journey to the Moon & Beyond. The main course is a larger adjoining sense-in-surround venue with a floor that rumbles with thunder during WILD: A Safari Experience. “Awe-inspiring” doesn’t do justice to the 360-degree scenes and sounds of savannas and rainforests, where gorillas emerge from the mists of every sightline. It’s virtual reality without eyewear or vertiginous reactions, and its time has come. –Matt Kelemen

Great cocktails and conversation Erik Kluever, lead bartender at Delmonico Steakhouse at The Venetian, fills conversation with thoughtful chestnuts of information when it comes to bartending and the restaurant. (I suppose his UNLV studies in literature, psychology and philosophy weigh in.) Kluever got into bartending in 2015 because of his love for spirits. He worked his way up the ladder and eventually added highly regarded craft cocktail bars to his resume, such as Oak & Ivy and The Laundry Room. Then he got wind of the position at Delmonico. “I know a lot of bartenders who have rolled through here and done great things, and this bar program is storied amongst my industry,” he says. He got hired in December. “Bar programs where it’s all about the lead bartender, those aren’t successful because the staff doesn’t feel appreciated,” he says. “It’s not about executing my cocktails, my vision. So when I took over I said, ‘It’s not the Erik show.’
Ultimately, I want everyone invested and everyone about this.” And it’s true—together, Kluever and his staff have created an impressive menu. Besides making cocktails, it’s about conversing with guests. “I like to think of it as I’m a barnacle where I’m not leaving my home,” he says. “Barnacles, they stay at home but yet they travel the world. I’m staying at home and people are coming here from all over the world.” That’s a testament to Delmonico, a 20-year institution on the Strip. “We are a part of guests’ routine when they come to Vegas—they have a few things they always do and we’re a part of that,” Kluever says. “That’s a testament to the hospitality, to the service, to the program. I respect that. I want to be a part of that. I want to learn from that.” And learn Kluever has, and still is, he says. With his passion for spirits, bartending and conversation, you just might learn some things, too, when you sit at his bar. –Kiko Miyasato

NOSH CHEERS s much as Las Vegas is evolving, there are plenty of visitors to our town that really miss the old days of Sin City. Heck, we’ve even got a Mob Museum downtown that details the city’s crime-ridden (but much glorified) past. And for a taste of what it must have felt like to be a bigwig back in the day, you really can’t do better than Andiamo Steakhouse at downtown’s The D casino, a true throwback in practically every way. The restaurant itself is relatively new to Las Vegas; D casino owner Derek Stevens loved the original in his hometown of Detroit and wanted a true Italian steakhouse as part of the property’s rebranding back in 2012. And as Stevens’ empire continues to grow (including the opening of his Circa Resort & Casino in 2020), Andiamo remains a core part of his philosophy—that everyone who visits his properties should feel like the most important person on the planet. Even the entrance to the property feels like you’re traveling through a time machine, with a brick-lined tunnel just off the escalator leading you into an immaculately appointed room full of comfortable booths, soft lighting and dark hues. Your servers attend to your every need, including preparing the
restaurant’s classic Caesar salad at your table while you enjoy classic cocktails like Manhattans, Old-Fashioneds and cosmopolitans. There are so many wonderful, shareable starters here that you may never want to shift to a main course. For burgers and beer, Vegas has you covered A juicy burger with an ice-cold beer is a classic summer combo, and there are seemingly infinite bars and restaurants that specialize in this terrific tag team. the perfect brew, sink your teeth into the grilled pub burger, a thick patty topped with sharp English cheddar and applewood smoked bacon with ideal fries on the side. At The Venetian, Black Tap Craft Burgers & Beer (702.414.2337) has everything you’re looking for right in its name. But this casual destination also serves incredible chicken wings, sandwiches, onion rings, chili and milkshakes, too. Back to the main mission: All varieties of burgers are available, but we tend to gravitate to the decadent steak au poivre or truffle burgers, using amazing ingredients to take this simple American favorite to new heights. And the draft beer selection is equally versatile, including brews from California, Colorado, Mexico and Oregon. You certainly don’t have to cruise a huge casino to find the B&B of your dreams. South of the Strip at Town Square, Sickies Garage (725.735.5400) is a friendly indoor-outdoor destination where you can catch the game and indulge in your favorite flavors, choosing from 50 different draft handles and 50 different burgers. Want to spice it up? Try the Hot Rod, with its jalapeños, spicy mayo, pepperjack cheese and Buffalo sauce. The new Mozzerati burger combines fried cheese, marinara and mozzarella for a fun Italian theme. For a true locals favorite, check out Bar Code (702.294.2633) on East Flamingo Road, where you can get your beer by the pint, in a 25-ounce glass, or in pitchers or towers if you’re going big with a group. You’re going to need it to wash down these acclaimed burger creations, including the big-flavored namesake with beer onion jam, bacon aioli, pickled onions and bell peppers and blue cheese. Bar Code’s barbecue burger packs on pulled pork, bacon, crispy onions, white cheddar cheese and a house-made blueberry barbecue sauce, a culinary combo you’ve never seen or tasted before. And this might be a burger-and-beer spot you’ll never forget. –Brock Radke

La Grande Expérience at “O” elevates an already amazing production By Ken Miller
Having been to Cirque du Soleil’s magnificent production “O” several times, I was thrilled to get the offer to enjoy the show’s La Grande Expérience, a VIP-level treatment. But at the same time, I wondered if it would actually heighten what I already consider to be one of the best Strip productions of all time. Trust me: It absolutely does, and in a way you’ll remember for years.

La Grande Expérience begins before you even enter the “O” theater at Bellagio; you wait, along with other couples who have purchased the experience, in a comfortable room just off the main ticket line. About 40 minutes before showtime, a show representative escorts everyone to a VIP area just to the left of the theater entrance. This room, stocked with champagne, fresh
fruit and charcuterie, is the same room used for celebrity VIPs, and odds are if you can imagine the celebrity, they’ve been to see “O”. The next 30 minutes are a complete immersion into the world of “O,” including a short virtual tour behind the scenes and a visit from cast members, who pose with you for commemorative photos and talk to you for a few min-

and the costumes help to create a dreamlike atmosphere. Adding to the allure of “O” is the fact that you never are sure where to look—the massive space is well-used, with performers occupying the farthest regions almost constantly while action takes place center stage. You can look at high divers, trapeze artists, contortionists, sure, but then you’d be missing the antics going on off to the side, in front of and behind those performers. There’s a big reason “O” enjoys so much repeat business: You want to see what you missed! And as much as “O” revels in spectacle, it takes time for whimsy as well, courtesy of a pair of clowns that float around on a house that’s been swept up by the water and is now floating around (a houseboat, perhaps?). Their gentle yet physical slapstick is instantly endearing, giving the show a humorous spice to go along with the thrills, chills and deep emotions you’ll find yourself giving into.

Magician Jen Kramer celebrates 500 Westgate Las Vegas performances this month
Some magicians do meet and greets after shows. Jen Kramer meets the new friends she made during her performance. Most audience members who see The Magic of Jen Kramer, also line up outside of her showroom at Westgate Las Vegas once the last trick is performed. She takes time to engage with each fan. Lots of time. They are of all ages, but children with an interest in magic walk away from Kramer inspired to pursue the craft with renewed commitment. enable Kramer to see a bright future for magic. Her own future was in the cards from the time she was 10 when she got hooked by a book, a gift from her Uncle Steve. “That’s when I really started practicing,” says Kramer. “I started doing magic for my family. I have two sisters, and my parents. … I knew that I loved it right away. I knew that I found it really intriguing and exciting, something that I wanted to explore. ...and within a couple of years I knew I wanted to perform anywhere and everywhere I could.” With a determination beyond her then 14 years, she talked her way into performing at a Barnes & Noble
near her Long Island home and was invited back for her first paid gigs. She studied theater at Yale and founded a magician’s society. Las Vegas was the next logical step. Being proactive and authentic are two major planks in Kramer’s platform. When she smiles audience members can’t help but smile back. She’ll zone in on someone with don’t-pick-me body language for a participation trick and send them back to their seats happy with a golden memory of Vegas and, if the magic is right, their favorite drink. She will perform her 500th show at Westgate in June during a summer when she celebrates both

her 30th birthday and one year back at her residency since the pandemic pause ended. She’s the only headlining Vegas magician who looks good in spaghetti-strap dresses, allowing her to work quick changes into her act. This could be due in part to pursuing a black belt in Shotokan karate during her formative magic years. “I do think there might be something similar in what draws a person to magic and to martial arts,” says Kramer. “For me, I think it’s the feeling of continually competing with yourself, wanting to beat your own best. In Shotokan karate and magic, there was always this sense of, ‘OK, I want to become stronger. I want to beat my own best. I want to continually improve.’ I know that’s how I feel about magic, for sure.” She never stops taking notes after shows, never stops adjusting, never stops tweaking stage banter “to make the audience have an even better experience.” She’s never less than upbeat. She doesn’t use bad words and kids do not find her scary. The future of magic is in good sleight-of-hand hands.

LAS VEGAS MAGAZINE
Magical prankster Michael Carbonaro is joyfully filling in for legendary duo Penn & Teller at the Rio as the longtime Las Vegas headliners tour Australia. He’s probably best known for the offbeat, often shocking illusions he produces on TV’s The Carbonaro Effect, but this version of his touring performance, dubbed Lies on Stage, will bring plenty of new material to Las Vegas, and introduce audiences to a theatrical style of magic they haven’t seen before.
To say I’ve been a fan of Penn & Teller my whole life is an understatement. People always ask me if I’d ever go on their TV show Fool Us and try to fool them. I can now say with confidence that convincing them to trust me with the keys to their theater while they are away counts as fooling them big time.

I treat the crowd like we are friends. I like to play with them, tease them, and keep them laughing. The goal is to sustain an electric buzz in the air where it’s truly unknown what is real and what is a trick. This show is a special riff on my brand-new tour show, which has only had a limited number of shows thus far. For Vegas, I’m keeping it open to swap some things in and out and around each night and experiment. It keeps me on my toes, which is where I want to be.
Live in front of an audience is where it’s at for me. There’s nothing like the magic of being in the moment, in the here and now. I think a lot of fans used to seeing me do magic on TV still secretly wonder if there are camera tricks, or it’s all actors and not

real people. You can feel the release of wild excitement when they are there in the theater seeing things like they’ve seen on TV, but this time it’s happening to them, right in front of their own eyes. There’s just nothing like it.
To really transcend and sustain an entire evening’s show … one has to be an entertainer. Sometimes you see an artist, a singer, magician or comedian that may look great in short, edited segments on TV, but couldn’t hold a full evening’s live show. It’s a different game. And it’s the game I like to be in.
Hey, I’m a magician, anything is possible.
