NOTES

From the Editor Time for Fireworks!

Welcome to July 4th weekend, one of the busiest Las Vegas weekends of the year. We’ve got so much in store for you this week, you couldn’t possibly enjoy it all. But we’re sure some of you are going to give it the old college try anyway. So let’s dive right into all this issue has to offer. Just remember: Take it easy out there. Our summer temperatures are nothing to play around with. Stay hydrated and safe! No city does pools and pool parties better than Las Vegas. And this week’s issue features one of the newest in town, Stadium Swim at Circa Resort & Casino (“Perfect Score!” p. 30). This complex is easily one of the most impressive in town (which qualifies it as one of the most impressive in the world). Check out the great photography by Christopher DeVargas, get your bathing suit on, and get ready for some serious summer fun! How about some live entertainment? There’s certainly no shortage of that this week, with a particular highlight being Morrissey returning to the Colosseum at Caesars Palace (“Mix and Mosh,” p. 36). Whether you’re a fan of his days with The Smiths or his solo work, you’re going to hear your favorites. How about a great production show? One of the Strip’s newest, AMYSTIKA— The Secret Revealed at Planet Hollywood

Resort, is creating plenty of buzz with its combination of spectacular special effects and magic acts. In this issue, editor at large Brock Radke interviews Mike Hammer, one of the magicians in AMYSTIKA who also has his own show at The Four Queens (“Best of Both Worlds,” p. 32). Got your family in tow and looking for something fun and free? The Bellagio Conservatory & Botanical Garden recently unveiled its newest installation, Jungle of Dreams, one that will provide endless family photos, as well as “oohs” and “aahs” from the kids (“Animal Attraction,” p. 38). If you find yourself in the northern section of the Las Vegas Strip, it’s time to explore the exciting Sahara Las Vegas, courtesy of associate editor Kiko Miyasato, who has lined up three entertainment options there to get you started (“1, 2, 3: Sahara Las Vegas,” p. 34). Looking for some solid dining options? We’ve compiled a bit of everything, from high-end Japanese cuisine at Nobu at Paris Las Vegas (“An Inspired Retreat,” p. 24) and a Mexican mid-morning meal at Casa Calavera at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas (“Bueno Brunch,” p.11) to an unforgettable experience at Jean Georges Steakhouse at Aria (“A La Carte,” p. 16). Feeling overwhelmed? Grab a drink, watch some fireworks and all will be well.

Magic in Memories David Copperfield is entering his fifth decade of amazing audiences with his largerthan-life illusions. And he’s entering his third decade as one of the Las Vegas Strip’s most iconic entertainers. In a town where longevity can be a challenge, that’s pretty ... magical.

A huge part of what makes an act successful in Las Vegas is its ties to the past. The memories we grow up with strongly determine what sells tickets today. And no matter your opinions of magic (it appears to divide most groups straight down the middle),

odds are you have fond memories of at least one of Copperfield’s feats throughout the years—walking through the Great Wall of China in 1986, escaping from Alcatraz prison in 1987, and surviving a fall over Niagara Falls in 1990, just for starters. –Ken Miller

Stay Awhile

Celebrity chef’s eatery is a long-running smash Fans of Top Chef are no doubt very familiar with head judge Tom Colicchio, a James Beard Award winner who’s not afraid to speak his mind and expect the very best from those who compete on the Bravo reality show. His standards are also apparent at his Las Vegas restaurants, including his eponymous Craftsteak, a Strip favorite that’s been going strong for nearly 20 years. It’s nestled snugly along MGM Grand’s restaurant row, and its entrance beckons you to enter with its bar area and enormous spirit and wine collection. The dining room itself is spacious and cozy at the same time, with soft lighting contrasting with warm tones. It’s the perfect

environment to kick back and enjoy some quality time with friends and family. And cocktails certainly help, especially the aged in-house Two Smoking Barrels, featuring High West Campfire whiskey, Luxardo, Antica Carpano and peach bitters, and In Love With the Coco, a blend of Ciroc Coconut, lime, basil, mint and soda. As its name would suggest, meat is king here, from the hand-cut wagyu tartare and prosciutto San Daniele on the starters menu to the wide selection of steaks, everything from filet mignon and New York strip to A5 wagyu rib-eye from Japan. If you’re having trouble deciding, go with the Chef’s Beef Selection section, which offers

a three-course menu for you and your party. Side dishes include white corn grits smothered in Gruyère, fingerling potatoes with garlic and thyme and Brussels sprouts cooked with bacon and bordelaise. There are also plenty of seafood options on Colicchio’s menu. Braised lobster with tarragon is a star here, as is ahi tuna with spinach and red onion relish, and diver sea scallops with shaved fennel. The dessert section is simple but wonderful, highlighted by cinnamon monkey bread covered with a pecan toffee. You can also enjoy crème brûlée or ice cream and sorbets. –Ken Miller

High-Up History Head up to Legacy Club, Circa’s beautiful and sleek rooftop lounge (all the way up on the 60th floor) with amazing views of the city from the patio and a seriously old-school vibe that pays homage to Sin City’s history. New to the calendar is Legacy’s Elevated Spirits Craft Cocktail Course, happening every Thursday through Saturday from 2-4 p.m. Guests learn all about proper drink-making techniques, the history of spirits and cocktails and how to create your own cocktail recipes. The class also includes three cocktails to enjoy. –Kiko Miyasato Circa Hotel & Casino, 702.247.2258

Casa Calavera photo by Steven Walter Omega Mart and Legacy Club photos by Wade Vandervort

The rebranding of Hard Rock Hotel to Virgin Hotels Las Vegas brought with it plenty of new restaurants, and one of its best just got a whole lot better with an excellent La Manana Brunch menu. Casa Calavera satisfies you on every level, with tasty cocktails and sweet and savory dishes aplenty. Start with a classic like a tequila sunrise with Casamigos blanco, orange juice and grenadine, then work your way to the decadent Juanito Cakes stack, five yellow corn cakes topped with maple syrup, chocolate sauce and berry compote. Yum! All your Mexican favorites are here, from Baja fish tacos and huevos rancheros to breakfast burritos and pork carnitas. But there’s more to tempt you, including short rib Benedict with cheese pupusas and chipotle hollandaise sauce; Catrina avocado toast with egg, pico de gallo, tomatillo salsa, pickled red onion and pomegranate; and huevos a la Mexicana, scrambled eggs with Oaxacan cheese and poblano-onion potatoes. Make sure to add a side of yucca fries, firm and crispy, served with poblano ranch. –Ken Miller

Surreal Supermarket There may be shortages in some sectors of retail, but the shelves are as full at Omega Mart today as they were when the experiential art destination opened at AREA15. Cans of Camel’s Dream of Mushroom and Barely Barley meal substitute “sops” are abundant, as are bottles of home freshener spray Who Told You This Was Butter? There is no shortage of visitors, with reactions to Meow Wolf’s off-Strip maximalist satire of consumerism expressed in a

variety of languages by “shoppers” perusing the aisles. Like a wardrobe enabling children to enter Narnia, Omega Mart has passageways hidden in plain sight that allow explorers into a world of pure imagination. Taking in the sights and sounds while exploring every twist of Omega Mart’s four giant themed areas is satisfying on its own, but unraveling the enigma behind Omega Mart is a deep dive. –Matt Kelemen AREA15, meow.wf/lvm

Agave Bar & Grill at Resorts World is poolside bliss with delish cuisine and cocktails. The venue overlooks the main pool, and gives off beachy, tropical vibes. The menu here is mostly Mexican-inspired with both classic options and yummy twists. Morning people can enjoy breakfast starting at 9 a.m. Order freshly brewed coffee and pair it with the red velvet pancakes served with chocolate syrup, cream cheese frosting and berries. Or go traditional with jugo de sandia (watermelon juice) and an order of chilaquiles. For a real twist, order the boba mimosa—your choice of lychee, mango or strawberry boba and cold-pressed orange juice. At lunch, we suggest trying the Cubano burger, a beef patty piled with smoked pork, ham, Swiss cheese, pickles and mustard aioli. Agave shrimp tacos are a must, served with chipotle lime mayo and slaw. Vegetarian? Options include buffalo cauliflower bites, Impossible burger, grilled elote and a burrito bowl. Cool down with an order of paleta, a strawberry-mango ice cream bar that you can have dipped in milk chocolate and coconut flakes. –Kiko Miyasato

Mystère never disappoints in the fun factor department, from the oversized baby looking for his “Papa” (he finds him, by the way, and you could be “Papa” depending on where you’re sitting) to the reappearance of the clown throughout the performance, performing magic tricks and generally messing around with the other performers. It’s a very loose framework around which Cirque has assembled some of the greatest athletes in the world, performing feats that

Quintessential Cuisine Longtime Las Vegas visitors may know the name Barry S. Dakake. In the heyday of the Palms, signing his door after dinner was a sign you really were a celeb. Nowadays, you can find the chef at Barry’s Downtown Prime at Circa Resort & Casino, where you’ll find a chill environment that channels the welcoming nature of an old-school steak joint, combining in modern sensibilities. At Barry’s, the beef is sourced from a variety of suppliers, including Creekstone Farms; filet mignon and New York sirloin come from family-owned brand Revier Cattle Company. Accent those cuts with shrimp, crab, lobster, truffles or a variety of sauces. Surf & turf consists of filet medallions and Maine lobster in a red wine sauce. For a total surprise, look to the vegan menu. From the portobello mushroom served with asparagus risotto, braised leeks and truffle vinaigrette to vegetable meatloaf, made with grilled summer squash and zucchini, vegans will dine well. Desserts range from luscious carrot cake to crème brûlée, but to cap off that steakhouse meal, go for a baked Alaska. No matter how many times you’ve had a dish where fire is a main component, it’s always impressive! –Nina King

Steakhouse adds to an already strong menu To walk through the doors of Jean Georges Steakhouse is to enter a world of elegance, a place that feels entirely unique on the Strip, a restaurant where carnivores feel pampered from beginning to end. The large, welcoming space has ambience for days, with soft curves connecting each area effortlessly. It’s the perfect space to enjoy a cocktail like a lychee raspberry Bellini, made with prosecco, lychee and raspberry, and a JG Vesper, a blend of Grey Goose vodka, Bombay gin, aperitif and lemon. Pair one with a raw bar treat; we recommend the rice cracker-crusted tuna, chunky, delicious pieces of toro served with scallions and sriracha. Or try a starter like warm white Provencal asparagus, a taste revelation served with a mustard emulsion and herbs. Chef/owner Jean-Georges Vongerichten has added a few pleasant surprises to an already sturdy menu. Longtime fans will be thrilled to see the return of swordfish Milanese, a dish Vongerichten made famous in the 1980s. It’s a delightful twist on chicken Milanese, with the sumptuous, thick swordfish blending spendidly with the breading, served with grilled lettuce hearts, capers and brown butter. Other new highlights include slowcooked sea trout, packed with flavor and served with fava beans, preserved lemon and pistachios, and fragrant spiced lamb chops, arranged like a delicious work of art and accompanied by cucumber yogurt and crunchy garnishes. Pair any of these with delights like crunchy potatoes, one of the best versions of this standby we’ve had on the Strip, served with chili yogurt and herbs, or maitake mushrooms, saison battered and served with chili honey. For dessert, the warm Valrhona chocolate cake and New York-style cheesecake are both strong contenders, but if you want something lighter, there’s a market citrus plate with yuzu cream, white chocolate, passion fruit and mango. –Ken Miller Aria, 702.590.8660

He’s Got Moves

The Venetian, 702.414.9000

In what has to be one of the most high-energy shows to ever hit the Las Vegas Strip, Derek Hough: No Limit features a stunningly talented cast performing a variety of dance styles to music that spans the ages, with the dancer/actor/singer at its center. Hough, known to millions for Dancing With the Stars, has assembled a cast of dancers whose moves rival his own (and that’s truly saying something). He’s joined by three men and four women, all of whom vault through the air, pirouette, strut, twist, salsa and much more throughout the 90-minute show. In addition to the athleticism he makes look easy, Hough occasionally picks up the mic to belt out a song, or picks up a guitar to play a lick from “Hotel California.” In the spirit of Sammy Davis Jr. and Donny Osmond, Hough really does it all in this show. When he does take a breath (which isn’t often), he even shows a sense of humor with dancing partner Hayley Erbert (in one clever bit, he kneels down as if to propose, only to tie his shoelace). He also pays homage to the past, including several numbers from Singin’ in the Rain. –Ken Miller

Johnny O’Donnell

One Steakhouse bartender is a city favorite Legendary Las Vegas bartenders do exist. Meet Johnny O’Donnell, bartender for One Steakhouse at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas. “They also call me a bon vivant,” says the Dublin native. “That’s what is says on my business card. I’m a facilitator, a purveyor of ‘bon vivantness’ here—I facilitate the social, luxury of One Steakhouse.” O’Donnell has a long history in the city of being social through bartending; he’s everyone’s favorite bartender and will quickly be yours when you sit at his bar. He started out at the storied N9NE Steakhouse at Palms during its heyday from 2002 to 2010. He then left to help open, with Vegas restaurateurs Michael and Jenna Morton, La Comida in Downtown Las Vegas and Crush at MGM Grand. Then he joined MB Steak (from brothers David and Michael Morton) when it opened at Hard Rock Hotel in 2017. He stayed with the property when it transitioned to Virgin Hotels Las Vegas and the restaurant changed to One Steakhouse.

“It’s about that Irish hospitality—making you feel comfortable,” he says. “You remember when people were nice to you. I like when people come in for first time and then they keep coming back.” O’Donnell constantly has repeat guests; people have followed him from bar to bar throughout his career. In fact, the day we talked to O’Donnell, his bar was sold out that night, mainly from customers he knows that are in town and make it a point to stop in. “Bartending is my passion,” he says. “It’s a lot of fun. I enjoy it. It’s making new friends, seeing old friends. … It’s all about acknowledgment. Give eye contact and a smile. Let’s go back to the old days, old school—that smile goes a long way. We don’t have to text a smile, do we? The old-fashioned ‘Hello, how are you?’ ... Bartending is just a job for some people but it’s a passion for me. When you got something as beautiful and good as what we have here, you want to share it...” –Kiko Miyasato

Let’s Make a Plan

Where to enjoy some drinking and fun this week With all the options in Las Vegas, narrowing down choices can be hard to do—sometimes it’s easier when you’re just told what to do! For those 21 and over, we’ve rounded up some ways to spend your days while in town. Now go enjoy yourself—we command it! Summertime is the perfect time for rosé, and Bouchon at The Venetian agrees. Stop into the Parisian-inspired bistro for its Summer of Rosé celebration. Four different bottles of the pink wine have been chosen, everything from rich and fruity to crisp and dry. When you order a bottle of rosé, you’ll receive a complimentary salmon mousseline hors d’oeuvre. Let’s switch from wine to gin. Make your way to Tommy Bahama Marlin Bar at Town Square,

a lovely, island-vibe bar and lounge that celebrates summer with new gin cocktails like the Tommy G&T. A little tonic is mixed with Tommy Bahama Island gin that carries notes of citrus, berry, grapefruit, hibiscus, elderflower and cardamom. Topped with fresh fruits, it’s the perfect seasonal sip! Other new cocktails include The Strawberry Fields of Summer with Tommy’s gin, Ambrosia Fizz and Hendrick’s Tea, both made with Hendrick’s gin. More new summer-inspired cocktails await at Top of the World at The STRAT. Try our fave pick, the Essence de Fraise, with Grey Goose Essences Strawberry and Lemongrass vodka, Italicus liqueur, lemon juice and macerated strawberry syrup.

And what’s summer (especially with the Vegas heat) without some much-needed pool time? For something a little different, try out the pool at Topgolf Las Vegas. That’s right—the popular driving range has a pool and bar for next-level chilling. When you first enter Nobu at Paris Las Vegas, you’ll be struck by how open it seems. The restaurant, slightly down a passageway to Le Boulevard and across from Vanderpump á Paris, is faced with a fenced-in indoor patio on one side, and a covered dining area beyond. On the other side, a dining room with sushi bar faces the kitchen, and large booths and columns form a very open “wall” along the passage. The whole arrangement adds up to a very lively atmosphere, with plenty of visual stimulation. But it’s your tastebuds that will be stimulated most. Do try a cocktail first— the Lychee and Elderflower martini is a deceptively simple, subtle concoction with Suntory Haku vodka, lychee juice and St-Germain elderflower liqueur, with the fruit as a garnish. Nobu’s celebrated tacos come in petite versions like lobster, wagyu and veggie, and are literally one luscious bite (You can also order A5 wagyu as an entrée). There is a two-piece minimum per order. If you would like a slightly bigger bite, check out the tempura or one of the hot dishes, like the black cod with miso, which offer a buttery, sweet chunk of cod in a miso glaze. Vegetarians can choose eggplant wrapped in a banana leaf—the presentation, like all Nobu’s dishes, is a work of art. That art continues on through dessert, where you can opt for yuzu cheesecake plated with raspberry sorbet and a berry coulis. The tartness of berries works so well with the citrusy notes of yuzu. And the Bento Box is a highlight—the box is so pretty, and when the top is removed, a flourless chocolate cake is paired with green tea matcha ice cream and berries. A variety of dessert wines are also available, like the Taylor-Fladgate 20-Year Tawny Port, guaranteed to make your night end well.

Seasonal Greetings

Summer menus abound with fresh ingredients Independence Day is a symbol of summer. While you may be celebrating the Fourth of July with fireworks, hot dogs and apple pie, sunny skies and sometimes searing temperatures translate to an understanding that it’s time to shift to slightly different seasonal fare. And many Las Vegas restaurants have already made the ad-

justment to lighter, brighter cuisine for summertime dining. Ada’s Wine Bar (702.462.2795) at Tivoli Village is a cozy destination that made its name on leisurely afternoons and evenings sampling wine with small bites that pack powerful flavors. Its updated seasonal menu includes a fun and

fresh take on a summer staple, sweet corn “ribs” dressed with house-made miso honey butter, scallions and tangy Aleppo chile. There are peaches and prosciutto with pistachio, mint and tahini, and seared bay scallops plated with corn purée, roasted cherry tomatoes and paprika chips. Don’t worry, the friendly folks behind the

bar will guide you to the right varietal to match these mouth-watering dishes. Nearby in the same delightful retail center and promenade, Ada’s big brother restaurant Al Solito Posto (702.463.6781) serves up summer dishes that align with its reputation as a neighborhood Italian favorite. Start with spring pea and burrata salad in lemon-mint vinaigrette, move on to bigeye tuna bruschetta with basil aioli and sesame cracker croutons, and cap things off with lobster ravioli in truffle butter or spring garlic risotto with asparagus, pine nuts and Parmesan. These flavors won’t wilt in the desert heat. Grimaldi’s Pizzeria (702.754.3450) has four outposts around the Las Vegas Valley, including a sprawling restaurant at The Palazzo on the Strip. All the Brooklyn-style favorites here feel appropriate any time of year, but Grimaldi’s is going above and beyond with a specialty coal brick oven-fired pizza this summer, topped with oven-roasted chicken, smoked bacon, red onion, fresh cilantro and Sweet Baby Ray’s barbecue sauce. Add a slice of fresh blueberry or strawberry cheesecake and you’re in heaven. At the homegrown Italian institution Ferraro’s Ristorante (702.364.5300), founder Gino Ferraro and his son, executive chef Mimmo, have launched a summer regional menu series available through September, cooking up authentic flavors from the Toscana, Campania and Calabria regions of Italy. Among the dishes available in July are panzanella salad, salsiccia con fagioli with homemade spicy sausage, the Tuscan tomato and bread soup known as pappa pomodoro, tagliatelle in sage and black truffle butter sauce, and wild boar ragu over pecorino cheese polenta. Ferraro’s is all about this family’s culinary roots and bringing Italy to Vegas; these summertime offerings should not be missed. Back on the Strip at Resorts World, the new Crossroads Kitchen (702.676.7000), one of the first plant-based restaurants in a major resort, feels like an obvious choice if you’re eating lighter for summer. But just because it’s meatless doesn’t mean it’s lacking flavor or satisfaction, as Vegas diners are learning when they try signature dishes like chestnut foie gras, Impossible “cigars,” spicy rigatoni vodka or truffle mushroom bianca pizza. Veggie-forward creations like eggplant filet, slow-roasted Campari tomatoes and spicy broccoli de cicco are other perfect summer dishes. –Brock Radke

Stadium Swim at Circa Resort & Casino is a big winner when it comes to a day at the pool It’s not uncommon for your jaw to drop when you walk through the glass doors out onto the upper level of Stadium Swim and are first hit with the sheer size and scope of the pool complex. “Stadium Swim—it’s surreal,” says EJ Stagner, director of Stadium Swim at Circa Resort & Casino. “It’s an environment that Vegas has never seen before.” ’Tis true. Let’s start with the 40-foot-tall, high-definition screen that is continually displaying sports, as well as sportsbook stats through its 14 million pixels. Then let’s talk venue. With a capacity of 4,000 people, it has three levels filled with 30 roomy cabanas, 337 chaise lounges, 38 daybeds, two owner’s suites (which fit 25 people!) and six pools. Live DJs play top 40 tunes throughout the day, and there’s a ginormous food and cocktail menu. Swim-up bars, living-room-type setups that sit on a ledge in the pool and a walk-up bar with frozen cocktail concoctions round out the offerings. Then there are the hours of operation. Stadium Swim is open day and night and doesn’t take a day off—it’s open 365 days a year. But wait, you ask: Doesn’t it get pretty cold here during the winter? Not an issue, as cooler weather changes Stadium Swim’s pools to giant Jacuzzis, heated to keep folks nice and warm. “In the winter, where every other pool is closing, we’re still open,” Stagner says. “We basically have six huge hot tubs. With the sports, college football, NFL, it’s a great place to come and watch the games.” Stadium Swim is 21 and over, so there are no kids running amok; and Stagner says it’s a great spot for those looking to celebrate with a bachelor or bachelorette party. “It’s definitely different,” he says. “It’s a great experience. I think it provides, not only downtown but Las Vegas in general, a great place for both locals and tourists. It really gives you the best of both worlds— if you just want to come for the pool party and experience that or for sports fans, this is really the only place in Vegas, in the country, to really experience watching your team.”

Magician Mike Hammer alternates between AMYSTIKA and his own show Chicago-born magician and comedian Mike Hammer has been building his name in the Las Vegas entertainment scene for more than two decades, including his current 11-years-and-counting stint headlining his show at the Four Queens on historic downtown’s Fremont Street. His rapid-fire delivery keeps audiences on their toes, then his sleight-of-hand skills astonish all. And now Hammer’s pulling double duty, cruising to the Strip most nights to perform as a primary cast member in fellow magician Criss Angel’s new AMYSTIKA—The Secret Revealed production at Planet Hollywood Resort.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT YOUR AFTERNOON PERFORMANCES AT THE FOUR QUEENS THAT HAS ALLOWED YOU TO SUSTAIN THE SHOW FOR SO LONG? When I started, people weren’t rushing to go to Fremont Street then; it was more of a late-night thing. The afternoon was pretty empty. It was hard, but I’ve done really well since then. I have an edge to what I do, and I think right now there’s kind of a need for it, when people are getting

kicked off Twitter every other day. I’m not vulgar but I do pick on the audience quite a bit and play off the crowd a lot. They enjoy it, but it took awhile to get to this point where people know I’m joking.

HOW DID THIS OPPORTUNITY OCCUR WITH AMYSTIKA? Years ago, I became friendly with Criss (Angel) when he came to my show and really liked it. He asked if I’d go on tour with him with a show called Raw, and we went all over the country and Canada. Then he asked me to go when we went to do Broadway, and how can you turn that down? It was a really unique experience, and we had a lot of fun, and we always kept in touch. During the pandemic, when no one knew if our shows were going to open again, he told me he was working on this other show with Franco Dragone, and it was … another one of those opportunities you have to take advantage (of).

TO PERFORM IN THESE TWO VERY DIFFERENT SHOWS.

Four Queens fourqueens.com Planet Hollywood ticketmaster.com

These days, I have to really balance my time, because you do need a certain amount of energy for performing. Going from one to the other is a workout, and I can’t do it and still go out to every event in town. I have to limit that time and rest my voice, too. But in a way, his show is easier for me, because I am following more of a technical layout. In my show, I can play around with the time a little more, improvise off the cuff, but on his show, while they do allow me a lot of freedom, I’m very aware of the timing because there are illusions that are very well choreographed, and I don’t want to screw up what the other characters and dancers are doing.

IMPROVISATION IS SUCH A HUGE PART OF YOUR PERFORMANCE, INTERACTING WITH THE AUDIENCE AND COMING UP WITH FUNNY REMARKS TO COMPLEMENT YOUR MAGIC. IS THAT SOMETHING THAT YOU TURN OFF WHEN YOU’RE OFFSTAGE, OR IS YOUR MIND ALWAYS GOING THROUGH THOSE MOTIONS? Those things come to me quite easily, but I do have trouble turning it off sometimes. My brain is constantly working unless I’m at home relaxing. Since I was young, I always had this quick wit, and it felt like kind of a curse at first because I would say whatever came into my mind. I had to learn to hone that as a craft and realize that you can’t just blurt those things out. My father was like that, he would say anything in public, and I always thought it was funny, but my family might get embarrassed sometimes. I think I picked it up from him, and I always loved Don Rickles and I think when I was younger, I was that guy in my head, thinking, “I can just rip on these people.” But the chemistry has to be right. It took years to perfect that, and now I can get away with pretty much anything.

Reckless in Vegas

Explore these hot spots to eat, drink and be merry By Kiko Miyasato This year marks 70 years that the northeast corner of Sahara and Las Vegas Boulevard has welcomed guests, although Sahara Las Vegas has changed names, owners and design throughout the years. It opened in 1952 as Sahara, hosting stars like The Rat Pack and The Beatles. In

34

7.3.22

LAS VEGAS MAGAZINE

2014 it rebranded as SLS Las Vegas, but by 2019 had been sold and the storied Sahara name was restored. This incarnation saw upgrades of posh bars, delicious restaurants, cool pools and more. Here, we’ve picked three of our favorite things at the reimagined resort and casino.

Bringing vintage Las Vegas back to life, and back to the Strip, Reckless in Vegas offers entertainment that defined the city in the 1960s. The group, a three-piece band with lead singer Michael Shapiro, performs inside

the Sahara Theatre, where great names like Louis Prima and Bobby Darin once took the stage. The music is a combination of contemporary and classic tunes, and the group puts its own musical spin on songs from Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Johnny Cash, Sonny & Cher and more. Think of the bygone lounge act days where music combined with beautiful showgirls, comedic banter, strong cocktails and a lot of fun. Catch their show Thursdays and Fridays at 8:30 p.m.

Azilo Ultra Lounge

From inside the casino, Azilo Ultra Lounge is hidden. Hint, there’s a door leading into the space from inside Casbar Lounge. Oozing Mediterranean-meets-bohemian vibes, this ultra lounge is a cool spot for cocktails and conversation. The space also spills out on to the Azilo Ultra Pool deck. Friday nights, those that love Latin beats will get the chance to shake their hips, and every Saturday night the musical format is a mash-up of ’80s, ’90s and Top 40 songs. We’d be remiss not mention the cocktail menu here. One of our faves: the

Chickie’s & Pete’s

pineapple margarita with Patrón Silver tequila, pineapple juice, lime juice, chipotle pineapple syrup, coconut syrup and a Tajin rim.

Since the late 1970s, the Philadelphia-born brand Chickie’s & Pete’s has served up its signature Crabfries—crinkle-cut fries with a side of creamy cheese sauce. Now Vegas guests can enjoy the classic treat along with sports viewing and a menu of upgraded bar food that mixes both land and sea on a plate. Throughout July, try the featured surf-and-turf burger with an 8-ounce smashed burger patty and fried shrimp. Other highlights include shrimp po’boy, Lisa’s blonde lobster pie and jumbo lump crab cakes. Or feast on snow and king crab legs, mussels, clams and oysters. There’s also a sports betting station and VIP pods for privacy.

Morrissey returns to Vegas for second round of ‘Viva Moz Vegas’ residency By Matt Kelemen

Odds are, many planning to attend Morrissey’s second round of headlining shows at Caesars Palace were on hand for the debut of Viva Moz Vegas at the Colosseum in September. Morrissey delighted megafans who bought tickets for multiple dates of that engagement by mixing up the setlists rather than rolling out a rigid repertoire five nights in a row. General admission tickets enabled dancing in front of the stage, hugs and autographs. Morrissey has a special relationship with his fans. One biographer described him as The Picture of Dorian Gray in reverse, as in he slowly ages while his fans stay young. His older fans are definitely young at heart when they hear Smiths’ songs and early Morrissey material that

36

7.3.22

LAS VEGAS MAGAZINE

dominated the soundtracks of their ’80s youths, and Morrissey did not keep them waiting long to launch into the reverberating rhythm of “How Soon Is Now?” during his last Las Vegas shows. He’s connected with every sub-generation of disaffected misfits ever since, becoming a musical messiah to appreciative artists such as The Killers, who rode ’80s revivalism to mainstream success. He’s a living Oscar Wilde to an ever-growing family of fervent Mexican fans who find solace and escapism in his romantic universe of wit and wisdom. He had no firm blueprint for success but took to stardom with an ease that made it seem destined. Morrissey rose to fame with The Smiths in the early ’80s while the

band he started with Johnny Marr was still on an independent label, his trademark quiff and inimitable croon distinguishing him from contemporaries. In the U.S., they were considered exotic and underground, with albums only available via import and often snatched up by college radio DJs who played “Panic,” “Hand in Glove” and “Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now” in heavy rotation. Morrissey’s early solo material from 1988’s Viva Hate and 1991’s Kill Uncle took the sting out of The Smiths’ breakup and set Morrissey on a course that has led to the release of 13 studio albums. Moz is opinionated. Moz wrote a song titled “Bigmouth Strikes Again” that gets recycled for headlines by British tabloids when he makes controversial remarks. He also continues to make intriguing artistic statements. Electronic music, pedal steel guitar and the spirit of Jacques Brel were present and accounted for on 2020’s I Am Not a Dog on a Chain, while Morrissey sang through a dry, unprocessed microphone with a voice aging most gracefully. That voice sounded amazing on songs from that album such as “Jim Jim Falls,” “Knockabout World” and “Love Is on Its Way Out” during Morrissey’s first five Caesars Palace shows. Much of the rest of his sets remain musical manna for the faithful. Just imagining “Everyday Is Like Sunday,” “Ouija Board, Ouija Board” and “Shoplifters of the World Unite” played live is enough to saturate the souls of Morrisey devotees with serotonin, let alone actually being there in front of the stage dancing like mad, wishing the night would never end.

Moments of discovery lie in wait at Bellagio Conservatory’s lush Jungle of Dreams There have been some extended-stay guests hanging out in the Bellagio Conservatory & Botanical Garden, and they’ve been acting like animals. This is mainly due to the fact that the residents of the Conservatory’s Jungle of Dreams, who have come to Las Vegas to attend the coronation of their king, are indeed

animals. A 34-foot-tall lion stands as the focal point of lush environs populated by guests including zebras, giraffes, monkeys, a spotted leopard, waterfowl, frogs and a black-and-white snake. Jungle of Dreams, which runs through Sept. 10, also boasts a treehouse, walkover bridge, pond and an LED wall that

Conservatory designer Ed Libby created experience-enhancing storyboards for. President and COO of Bellagio and Park MGM Resorts Ann Hoff found it spectacular as she took in the sights of the summer scene on the day of its debut. “The idea is to always create something special and unique with each of our installations at the Conservatory,” says Hoff. “This one has come to life in a unique way thanks to the team, who’ve done such an incredible job. The animals are lifelike and realistic.”

Indeed, the zebras look as if they are bursting forth from gilded frames. The lion is of noble bearing and holds court as pink flamingos pay homage nearby. Monkeys seem caught in mid-climb, while giraffes stand surefooted on either side of the bridge in the center of the rainforest. Libby is enthusiastic about the many “moments of discovery” that await jungle dreamers who traverse the Conservatory. There is much to process from many different angles. At the most central point of the installation, on the bridge, he added bamboo guard railings, positioned so guests will intuitively be drawn to use them for steadying phone cameras. They will also be drawn to the Conservatory’s newest permanent feature. “I’ve been talking about that video wall for six years,” says Libby, who made prototype videos for the spring show as a trial run of the new technology. “I’ve actually been using them more for events and stage shows. The idea is always, ‘What’s the new innovation in design? Where are we going to go?’ We got to a place where there was a curiosity and appetites for exploring this further.” Libby’s team always seeks to take the lessons from the last project and apply them to the next, raising standards and

confidence levels higher and higher. Director of horticulture operations Jessica Walker meets the challenge as well, creating innovative sculptural textures and complementing fauna with flora. Look for bromeliads and orchids in the shadows of the giraffes. Blackand-white patterned plant life in the zebra zone contrast strikingly with black elephant ears. Palms and philodendrons

create a peaceful easy feeling around the pond. Whether adding texture to sculpted animal life or creating their habitats, the botanical aspects multiply the moments of discovery. Of course, it’s important to remember the reason the animals have gathered at the Bellagio: a royal ceremony where vision and skills of a creative team make it easy to suspend disbelief.

Terry Fator’s Las Vegas journey continues at new, intimate venue When Terry Fator took the stage of America’s Got Talent way back in 2007, no one could have predicted the trajectory his career would have taken. After all, it was just a man, a puppet and a trio of judges, one of whom obviously had no tolerance for ventriloquists. (We’re looking at you, David Hasselhoff!). Then Fator opened his mouth—er, rather, his puppet, Emma Taylor, opened her mouth, and out came the voice of Etta James singing “At Last.” Suddenly some of the judges resembled dummies themselves, mouths wide open in stunned disbelief. He went on to win that season, and everyone knew he was on his way to significant fame. It made sense, as at the time, it was just a basic fact—no one could do what Fator could do; not only was he a world-class ventriloquist, he could throw his voice while singing! And not only that, he could sing in other people’s voices, specifically the voices of legendary musicians, everyone from Garth Brooks and

Karen Carpenter to Bruno Mars and Meghan Trainor. It was an act tailor-made for Las Vegas, as it had all the elements of a classic Las Vegas show: The ventriloquist element, well grounded in Vegas lore thanks to legendary acts like Willie Tyler and Lester, Wayland Flowers and Madame, and even more recent acts like Ronn Lucas and Jeff Dunham. The comedy element, one that incorporates the cheesy, anything-for-a-laugh style that goes all the way back to The Rat Pack, Rodney Dangerfield and Don Rickles. The singing element, as almost every voice Fator generates has performed in Las Vegas—Elvis Presley, Elton John, Paul McCartney, Justin Bieber, Louis Armstrong, Ozzy Osbourne and so many others. So began an incredibly successful run, first at Las Vegas Hilton (now the Westgate Las Vegas), for a year, followed by a $100 million,

multiyear contract at The Mirage, complete with a performance space named for him. But as every entertainer on the Strip knows, Vegas is a town that changes rapidly, and that extends to performers. Fator wrapped up his Mirage residency after 11 years in 2019, and was set to return to New York-New York right before the pandemic shutdown of 2020. However, he was also one of the first shows to return in late 2020, originally in the space now used for Cirque du Soleil’s Mad Apple and, now, in a new space ideally suited to the intimacy his show requires: Liberty Loft, located on New YorkNew York’s second floor. Of his new show, titled, Who’s the Dummy Now? Fator said in a press release, “I am thankful to the MGM Resorts team for allowing me to perform at the resort, and am touched by the tens of thousands of fans who came out to support me this year. When we started to talk about Liberty Loft, I was thrilled to discover it affords us the opportunity to create the ideal viewing experience for my audience.” No doubt Fator will continue to amaze and entertain a whole new generation of fans.
