NOTES

From the Editor Usher in the New

When some of you plan your Vegas vacation, odds are it involves returning to a particular venue, attraction or show. You had a blast last time, and can’t wait to go back. We get that completely. We live here and we have a similar list in our heads whenever we head to the Strip. But here’s something important to remember: In addition to the experiences you remember, Las Vegas is always adding new ones. This week’s issue is full of not only longstanding bastions of dining, entertainment and fun, it includes many brand-spanking-new elements that you’ll definitely want to consider as part of your Vegas vacation. Bally’s on the Strip is in the midst of eventually becoming Horseshoe Las Vegas, and as part of that changeover, there’s a new restaurant opening there: Jack Binion’s Steak (“All the Beef,” p. 14), named after one of the towering figures in Las Vegas casino history. (His original Horseshoe casino hosted the original World Series of Poker in 1970, an event that continues in Las Vegas to this day). And that’s just the beginning. Another new attraction on the Strip, Perception Las Vegas, debuts with an interactive exhibit on the works of Leonardo da Vinci (“Artful Expansion,” p. 32). In addition, one of the best dinner-and-a-show experiences on

the Las Vegas Strip, The Mayfair Supper Club at Bellagio, has updated its amazing show with a new cast (“Now, To Wow,” p. 14). And those who were in town last year to see Usher’s legendary residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace will be thrilled to learn that he’s back—but at a different venue, Dolby Live at Park MGM, with some new tricks up his sleeve. Check out editor at large Brock Radke’s interview with the Grammy-winning performer for more details (“Do It His Way,” p. 30). Not that we’ve ignored some of your favorites in this week’s issue. Carrot Top remains one of the most popular comedians in town at Luxor (“Red-Letter Show,” p. 34), while attractions like the High Roller on The Linq Promenade continue to draw crowds—and it’s added a Family Field Trip Guide to add an education element (“Higher Learning,” p .9). In addition, shoppers will delight in learning that The Shops at Crystals just added a new tenant: Chanel (“Where Luxury Lives,” p. 12). We haven’t ignored dining either. There’s a terrific brunch at Brezza at Resorts World Las Vegas (“From Italy, With Love,” p. 24), while Bardot Brasserie at Aria specializes in the cuisine of France (“French Accent,” p. 11). Whether you’re a fan of new or established, get ready to enjoy Vegas!

Truly Awesome

Strip performer wields dual talents Before The Mac King Comedy Magic Show even begins, something wonderful happens: An announcer invites you to participate in the kids’ singalong “If You’re Happy and You Know It.” Sure, there’s bound to be plenty of eye-rolling at this request (maybe by you yourself), but once that jaunty music starts playing, you just cannot help yourself—you’re clapping your hands, stomping your feet and shouting “Hurray!” along with everyone else. The best part? It instantly puts you in a better mood. The cares of the world fade away, and suddenly you’re a kid again, smiling and excited for what’s to come. That feeling will continue unabated throughout King’s set. The Kentucky-born-and-raised

magician instantly connects with his audiences through down-home humor and a self-effacing nature—no one is quicker to acknowledge that a joke didn’t work than King, which in itself is pretty hilarious. And there’s plenty of audience participation in King’s show as well, highlighted by several great bits: • Using a “cloak of invisibility” (no Harry Potter jokes, please), King helps a couple move some playing cards around the stage—and each other; • Using four envelopes and a bit of fire, King finds a novel way to use a volunteer’s $100 bill; • A young volunteer is asked to help King set up his camping tent. At one show I attended, my

great-niece was brought onstage. Her reaction to the “great reveal”—utter shock, followed by the biggest smile ever—remains one of my fondest memories as a Las Vegan. Other props are used to huge effect, particularly a goldfish that seems to literally appear out of thin air, a guinea pig that pops up in the most unusual of places (you’ll see!) and … Fig Newtons. We won’t tell you where King makes these things appear from, but trust us … if he gives you one, do not eat it. By the time King’s show is over, it’s hard to say what you’ll miss more on the walk back to your room—the illusions or the laughs. –Ken Miller Excalibur, 800.745.3000 Ticketmaster

Hang Time Comedy favorite Mark Curry is back in Las Vegas with his stand-up act on July 22 at Treasure Island. Curry, who you’ll recognize from television classic Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper, and from specials on HBO and Comedy Central, plus roles in many shows and movies over the past 30 years, will have you laughing with bits on everything from Halloween to growing up in a large family. He might even give you some clues to how to deal with gas prices, and we all need that. –Nina King Treasure Island, 702.894.7722

Did you have to choose between Paris and Las Vegas on your latest trip? Well, don’t worry. You can still get a taste of France in multiple spots, from an entire themed hotel to French-inspired eateries like Bardot Brasserie at Aria. Michael Mina’s bistro resembles a fancy 1920s café in the City of Lights (a moniker Vegas shares, deservedly), with dark woods and plenty of glass. For a more casual meal, ask to sit in the patio area— and the bar will set you up with a cocktail to start. The menu features French favorites as well as selections from other cuisines, and you can choose to come for brunch for even more options. Some of the notable appetizers to begin with include prime steak tartare, escargots, and oeufs mimosa—deviled eggs with caviar. Entrées include classics such as a croque madame, the Bardot Wellington and a whole, stuffed loup de mer. The three-pound Mediterranean sea bass is served with asparagus, fava beans and morels and easily serves two. To try several dishes in one night, order La Fête Royale, a chef’s tasting for the table, which spans four courses. –Nina King

Find an Out The Strip’s first escape room adventure, PanIQ Escape Room & Lounge features a variety of different scenarios, guaranteeing you’ll be coming back again and again. The seven scenarios are all a blast, including: Casino Heist (rob a casino); Atlantis Rising (scoop up the lost treasure before it sinks); and Wizard Trials (cast some spells). In each, you get between 45 to 60 minutes to accomplish your mission. Whatever you choose, make sure to visit the facility’s

full-service bar and lounge, serving up themed cocktails. “Our location in Las Vegas offers diversity and originality,” said PanIQ Room & Lounge CEO Akos Gabossy in a recent release. “There’s an escape room experience for everyone, whether it’s a bachelor(ette) party … or a local couple planning their next date night with friends.” –Ken Miller The Venetian & The Palazzo, 775.507.2727

Where Luxury Lives

Find fashion’s elite all under one roof For 13 years, luxury of the highest level has shined on the corner of Harmon and the Strip. With a hard-to-miss façade, The Shops at Crystals stretches its luxurious walls to fill nearly 300,000 square feet, housing 52 of the world’s most expensive and renowned brands. Simply walk through the stunning architecture and you’ll feel the richness oozing around every corner. During the past three years, The Shops has welcomed new tenants including Alexander McQueen, Burberry, Alice + Olivia, Jon Rossi, Creed, Golden Goose and Giorgio Armani. And in May, Chanel finally joined the roster. “Chanel has been the brand that we’ve always been missing,” Nicholas Strause, general manager of The Shops at Crystals, said. “It’s been the most requested brand, so we’re very excited about that.” Strauss

added that the amount of inventory is unreal compared to other Chanel boutiques, guaranteeing fans of Chanel a fun afternoon while they peruse the best in ready-to-wear, jewelry, shoes, fragrance, beauty and more. Also new is the recent redesign and relocation of Gucci. Spanning two stories and 12,000 square feet, the brand fills its space with men’s and women’s shoes, ready-to-wear fashions, luggage, jewelry, handbags and other accessories. The visuals are worth the visit alone; artist Ignasi Monreal hand-painted a mural displaying a whimsical Las Vegas. (Hello, Instagram!) Other brands under The Shops at Crystals umbrella include Prada, Stella McCartney, Patek Philippe, Harry Winston, Dior, Fendi, Tom Ford, Dolce & Gabbana, Valentino, Versace, Christian

Louboutin and Balenciaga. “We have all these brands in such close proximity and under one roof,” Monique Clements, director of marketing and business development, said. “The sheer size of the boutiques is unreal, and, in most cases, the brands carry the full product line. We have 12 brands here that aren’t anywhere else in the world. Because it is Vegas, and because these are flagship boutiques, in almost every case, the brands, when they do have specialty pieces, this is where they choose to showcase them.” Besides the shop-till-you-drop reasons to visit, The Shops at Crystals also houses entertainment with The Original Immersive Van Gogh Exhibit Las Vegas and Barbie, A Cultural Icon Exhibition. –Kiko Miyasato 702.590.9299

The Shins have undergone many lineup changes over the 26 years they’ve been a culture-shaping band, but there has been one constant: Frontman James Mercer, whose songwriting has produced five albums that are much beloved by fans, particularly the band’s first album, Oh, Inverted World, which The Shins will perform in its entirety as part of its current tour. Many current Shins fans can attribute their love of the group to hearing “New Slang” in the 2004 movie Garden State, arguably one of the most influential effects a movie has ever had on a band (their two albums up to that point sold more than twice what they had prior to the film’s release). Mercer’s connection with Zach Braff, who directed Garden State, would continue with his contribution of the song “So Now What” for Braff’s Wish I Was Here, and the band has managed to keep its profile high over the years. The group has produced five albums—Oh, Inverted World, Chutes Too Narrow, Wincing the Night Away, Port of Morrow and Heartworms. In addition to the entirety of World, expect Mercer and company to play a bit of everything from the remainder of its catalog. –Ken Miller

Fine Cut For one of the best steaks in Vegas, head to Edge Steakhouse. Start with a classic shrimp cocktail. Wedge salads and French onion soup are always popular. Cuts include filet mignon, bone-in and dry-aged, rib-eyes, dry-aged New York strip, and a wagyu strip loin that’s to die for. Half roast chicken, Skuna Bay salmon and Alaskan red king crab legs give you even more options for your entrée. Top those off with caramelized onions, seared scallops or

roasted bone marrow. And for a decadent side, the portobello mushroom stuffed with Boursin cheese, or mac and cheese, with three cheeses and black truffle, really give your mouth something to celebrate. And dessert? Try a trio of ice cream, cheesecake or Tahitian créme brûlée—or go big with a chocolate sphere with brownie, praline nut crunch, chocolate mousse and salted caramel sauce. –Nina King Westgate Las Vegas, 702.732.5277

Thrilling Acts When illusionist Lèa Kyle first appeared on season 16 of America’s Got Talent, she revealed her dream was to have her own show in Las Vegas. The French quick-change artist proceeded to saunter-strut behind a small black curtain and in a nanosecond revealed her all-black outfit was now a glittery turquoise mini-dress. Revealing anything else about Kyle’s act would be spoiling it for the audiences attending America’s Got Talent Las Vegas Live, but her Vegas ambitions are definitely becoming a reality. In January, she joined a cast that caused them all to rise about the competition: presentation. From singers Kodi Lee and Jimmie Herrod to shadow-performance group The Silhouettes and neon-enhanced dance troupe Light Balance, it’s how they do it that distinguishes them. Tying them together in a variety show format makes America’s Got Talent Las Vegas Live pound-for-pound the most talent-packed show on the Strip. Will You Be There?

Production celebrates singer’s legacy During his lifetime, Michael Jackson exuded a childlike wonder, an attitude that proved infectious for his millions of fans. That same sense of wonder pervades each and every second of Cirque du Soleil’s Michael Jackson ONE at Mandalay Bay, a celebration of The Gloved One’s music, legacy, philosophy and persona, achieved through a combination of dance, acrobatics, special effects, comic performances and, especially, music. The show is a series of vignettes tied together loosely by four young “misfits” who are pursued by baddies as they attempt to “save” Jackson’s music, rushing in and out of segments, some-

times participating in the activity onstage, from bungee acrobatics during “Beat It” to some hilarious pantomime as Jackson’s glove seemingly comes to life during “Working Day and Night.” Elsewhere, there’s so much to look at and enjoy while looking forward to the next Jackson number—from dancers who come to electric life through the use of LED costumes during “Billie Jean” and trampoline artists who appear to defy gravity during “Thriller” to incredibly synchronized dance routines to both “They Don’t Care About Us” and “Smooth Criminal.” Sprinkled through these bits are pictures of Jackson throughout the various stages of his life

and career, coupled with the music he was performing at the time—“I’ll Be There” as a member of the famed Jackson 5 is particularly affecting— and profound words he had for the world. The action climaxes in an amazing hologram sequence, with Jackson appearing alongside the misfits for a performance of “Man in the Mirror,” disappearing at key moments and reappearing at others; it’s a sobering reminder that Jackson is no longer with us, but the entire production is a reminder that the impact of his music will continue to touch and inspire generations of fans. –Ken Miller Mandalay Bay, 702.632.7580

Take a Look-See Whether you’re a faithful fan of Raider Nation, a fan of football or just a fan of impressive architecture and design, the Allegiant Stadium Tour is both money and time very well spent. The hourlong walking tour has many stops along the way (some with special access that not every visitor to the stadium is privy to), stops like the Level 200 suites, containing personal VIP areas for Vegas bigwigs, including Raiders owner Mark Davis. (Fun fact: Davis’ suite is where you’ll find the only white stadium seating out of all of Allegiant Stadium’s 65,000 seats!) One fun stop is the Raiderettes locker room—you’ll see where they get ready for a game. You also enter the team’s locker room and check out the massage and medical areas, and the hydrotherapy pools. Other stops include the broadcast booth, the Champions Club (where celebs and A-listers hang during a game), the tunnel where the Raiders run onto the field, and the pièce de résistance: A stop to snap some pics at the 50-yard line. –Kiko Miyasato Allegiantstadium.com/tours

Emotional Journey It’s one thing to see a master’s works in a museum. It’s another thing entirely to see them as they are displayed in The Original Immersive Van Gogh Exhibit Las Vegas, where some of his most famous works are shown in a way you’ve never seen before. In a large, rectangular room, as the lights dim, Van Gogh’s works like The Starry Night, Wheatfield with Crows and The Yellow House are projected on the walls, as plaintive music takes you on a tour of the artist’s journey. It’s fascinating, cutting-edge, emotional. It’s also one of the most unforgettable art exhibits you’ll ever experience. –Ken Miller The Shops at Crystals, vangoghvegas.com

Real Talk Viewers of Bill Maher’s HBO Series Real Time know one thing for certain: The standup comedian is not shy about speaking his mind. He takes both Democrats and Republicans to task in getting to the bottom of what is right and wrong with America (lately, his balance sheet has skewed highly into the wrong area), always with a sharp wit. That philosophy extends to his stand-up routine—attending one of his shows is like reading the newspaper, only instead of get-

ting depressed, you’re laughing and realizing how absurd it all is. His takes all hit their mark, from cancel culture to white supremacy. It’s a scary time to be speaking your mind, but Maher refuses to compromise, and it’s made him vital viewing for millions of viewers. He’ll bring that fearlessness (always with a sly, boyish grin) to his sets at The Mirage as part of the Aces of Comedy series. –Ken Miller The Mirage, 16+, 702.792.7777

For this server, it’s all about helping others Sofia Sanchez is rocking it as a model cocktail server at Liquid Pool Lounge at Aria. “At this point, after eight years of being in the industry, I’m used to it,” says the California native. “When I first got into the industry, I was shy and nervous. Now, I’m comfortable and like, ‘Hey guys, what’s up!’ I treat my guests like friends.” Those eight years include model cocktail serving at nightclubs in San Diego; two years ago, she moved to Las Vegas and switched over to dayclubs when she was hired at Liquid; this will be her second season. “My favorite part is, I love working outside,” she says. “I get a free tan. I prefer the dayclub over nightclubs because it’s normal working hours.” At work, Sanchez takes care of guests, making sure they’re having a great time and

receiving the best service. “I’ve always been social and outgoing,” she says. “I hang with my guests; I take time to get to know them.” Sanchez also loves how Liquid is a smaller venue than most dayclubs; she likes the intimacy of the space and she loves the musical format. It isn’t always EDM music, which most dayclubs tend to play—it’s more hip-hop and R&B music. When Sanchez isn’t giving Liquid guests a great experience, you’ll find her applying her aesthetician’s license, taking care of people’s skin. “At 26, I got (a skin condition) and after getting it fixed, it made me want to go into skin care to help others with healing their skin,” she says. Strip bars and lounges where you can hear live music Who wouldn’t want a little live music with a brewski in hand … or a drinkski, or a shotski … OK, that’s enough. But seriously, there are some great spots on the Strip for music and drinks. Any country music fans? Head to Losers Bar at MGM Grand. You’ll be a winner all night at this “no frills” bar that serves up tons of beer on tap and live country-western music daily, from 3 p.m.-1 a.m. If you have the nerve, take the mic yourself at Monday-night karaoke, beginning at 9 p.m. Over at The Piano Bar at Harrah’s, the musical lineup includes Big Elvis, an impersonator singing the King’s hits every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 2-6 p.m., dueling piano players every night at 9 p.m., sexy saxophones serenading every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and

The open-air bar welcomes live bands playing top 40 and ’80s music, as well as live DJs both day and night. Head to Resorts World for some upscale nightlife at Eight Lounge, Friday and Saturday nights. On the expansive terrace, musical artists perform from 5-8 p.m. and a DJ takes over at 9 p.m. Steps away is über-cool lounge Gatsby’s, where live musical artists perform Monday and Tuesday at 9 p.m. and DJs soundtrack the party Wednesday through Sunday from 10 p.m.-3 a.m. From more Great Gatsby-era fun, check out 1923 Prohibition Bar at The Shoppes at

Mandalay Place on Friday and Saturday nights beginning at 9 p.m. The New Orleans speakeasy venue combines Prohibition-era tunes and burlesque entertainment. At the north end of the Strip, Rhumbar Tropical Ultra Lounge at The Mirage offers some chill and laid-back music nightly, pairing nicely with its many rum-based drinks and cigar offerings. Also at the property, head to a more elegant and dimly lit venue, Parlor Cocktail Lounge, where live music includes tunes from a classic Steinway grand piano, beginning at 9 p.m. Continue north on the Strip until you hit downtown and the Golden Nugget, where you can catch a rotating lineup of live bands playing every night at Rush Lounge. –Kiko Miyasato

Brezza cuisine shines in its Sunday brunch It’s a Sunday kind of love at Brezza at Resorts World. The perfect start to close out the weekend is brunch at the Italian eatery, helmed by partners of the restaurant—Jason Rocheleau and Las Vegas culinary star and executive chef Nicole Brisson. The restaurant is chic and upscale, yet totally inviting and comfortable. Enjoy a large dining area flooded with natural light, or choose to eat on the coastal-vibes patio that’s dotted with greenery and olive trees.

And while the interior design does deserve attention, you’ll remember Brezza for every bite you took at brunch. “When Jason and I first started brainstorming about brunch, my inspiration for the menu was sparked by my time working in upstate New York,” Brisson said. “I love that brunch is always so heavily focused on fresh fruits and vegetables.” And that focus flows throughout the entire menu, beginning with the antipas-

ti dishes. While pastries are de rigueur on all brunch menus, including Brezza’s, branch out and taste what Brisson has done with incorporating fresh produce, from the Annabella yogurt with fresh Harry’s Berries, honey and mint, and the baby kale salad with strawberries, goat cheese and almonds, to the hearty heirloom caprese with buffalo mozzarella and served with basil pesto grilled crostini. There’s even fresh veg in and on the Diane’s Bloody Mary (plus plenty of other toppers). Since Brezza celebrates the flavors of the Italian coast, brunch here includes a sizable ocean section on the menu with freshshucked oysters, octopus marinati made with tomato, cucumber and Fresno chili for a fresh-and-spiced bite, and the stunning overflow of the ocean with the shellfish di giorno packed with shrimp, crab claws, scallops and abalone crudo, oysters and lobster served with dipping sauces. The Italian theme continues with fresh-made pasta options, and a must-try, memorable dish is the pea agnolotti made with preserved Meyer lemon, morels and porcini. For those who tend to lean toward more traditional brunch-type dishes, Brezza’s entrée section will satisfy you with such classic items as steak and eggs. If you aren’t sure what to choose, Brisson highlights a couple of choices: “The farmhouse tart and zucchini crepes are modern interpretations of dishes I used to make at the Palmer House Café working with chef Bill Bensen,” she said. Packed into the

crepes are fresh mozzarella, basil and thinsliced zucchini topped with a light tomato sauce. The farmhouse tart is baked with sausage, walnuts and fontina cheese for a flavor-packed bite. For more brunch-inspired dishes, especially for those with a sweet tooth, Brisson incorporates fruit from acclaimed culinary forager and farmer’s market pioneer Kerry Clasby, who sources her treasures from California’s small, organic family farms. “We are able to highlight all of Kerry Clasby’s beautiful fruit and citrus in dishes like the citrus brûléed budino and our house-made waffles,” Brisson said. The fresh, plump mixed berries make appearances everywhere, including atop light and airy, perfect-crunch waffles with bramble syrup; and more of the berries 702.676.6014 continue to shine in the sweet semolina cakes, dense but melting in your mouth, and topped with lemon and Cointreau whipped cream—this is the perfect dish for the whole table. End the meal with citrus brûléed budino, a pudding with a candy-like topping—it’s also a great share for the table and a sweet Housemade waffles ending to a sweet Sunday morning retreat.

And don’t worry, there are savory dishes for lunch and dinner to balance out your experience.

WHERE TO COOL OFF

Nevada’s best watering holes

+

Summer has arrived in Southern Nevada which means it’s time to find creative ways to cool off. Whether it’s wading in a nearby spring, taking a dip in one of our beautiful lakes or kicking back with a cold beer at a Sagebrush Saloon, many of these watering holes could soon be your favorite.

SAGEBRUSH SALOONS Though there are many exceptional cocktail bars and breweries in Las Vegas, sometimes it’s nice to enjoy a drink off the grid. Enter: Sagebrush Saloons. Rich in history, often remote and always an adventure, these taverns are a great way to beat the heat and get in touch with your inner Nevadan. THE PIONEER SALOON, GOODSPRINGS (41 MINUTES FROM LAS VEGAS): More than 100 years old, The Pioneer Saloon is the oldest bar in Southern Nevada, evidenced by the original stamped-tin walls, Clark Gable’s cigar burns on the bar top and cowboy shoot-out bullet holes throughout. There’s also plenty of paranormal sightings. Try their signature Kentucky Mule and pair it with a Ghost Burger. MOUNTAIN SPRINGS SALOON, MOUNTAIN SPRINGS (44 MINUTES): Bikers and travelers have frequented this saloon since its founding in the 1950s. Situated on Mountain Springs Summit between Pahrump and Blue Diamond, it’s the perfect place for a pit stop when exploring the many parks in the area. Go on the last Saturday of the month for the famous pig roast.

HAPPY BURRO CHILI & BEER, BEATTY

(1 HOUR, 47 MINUTES) Named after the wild burros that roam the town, Happy Burro Chili & Beer is a popular hangout of the Beatty Cowboys. Beatty itself was a hotspot for gold mining at the turn of the century, making this saloon a must-see for any history buff, or individuals looking for a cold PBR, chili burger and history.

LAUGHLIN (1 HOUR, 30 MINUTES) For an adventure on the Colorado River, including Big Bend of the Colorado State Recreational Area, head to Laughlin to rent jet skis, boats and other on-the-water options.

C R E AT E D A N D P R E S E N T E D B Y T R AV E L N E VA DA

BEAT THE HEAT Spending time outdoors to escape the heat may seem counterintuitive, but these spots will allow you to enjoy the summer weather and cool off. DESERT ADVENTURES, BOULDER CITY (30 MINUTES): Offering kayak trips you won’t soon forget, begin at Hoover Dam and then coast down the Black Canyon National Water Trail to hot springs, waterfalls and more. It’s also great for wildlife spotting, including bighorn sheep. THE RETREAT ON CHARLESTON PEAK (45 MINUTES) Only 39 miles from Las Vegas but a world apart, Mount Charleston is routinely at least 20 degrees cooler than the Las Vegas Valley—a welcome reprieve during the dog days of summer. Hike Mary Jane Falls in the morning and enjoy the afternoon at Canyon Restaurant located inside the lodge.

LAKE TAHOE (7 HOURS, 7 MINUTES) One of the most beautiful and serene lakes in the world, head to Tahoe for every water adventure you can imagine and some cooler mountain temperatures.

BEAVER DAM: Beaver Dam State Park is the least-visited state park and possibly one of Nevada’s best kept secrets. Less than four hours from Las Vegas, along the Great Basin Highway, Beaver Dam is nothing short of magical. Green trees, clean air and a beautiful stream flowing throughout, this site is ideal for camping and rainbow trout fishing. Hike the Waterfall trail to a series of cascades and a warm spring to splash in.

CAVE LAKE, ELY: With stunning mountain views and crystal-clear water, Cave Lake State Park should be on everyone’s bucket list. Kayak, paddle board and camp in this pristine area. If you don’t make it up this summer, consider it for a winter trip.

WORTH THE TRIP Plan day trips or weekend getaways for when you want to head a bit farther out.

RENO: The Truckee River is a favorite place to float downstream. Bring an inner tube, beers and prepare to kick off your trip at Mayberry Park and finish in Downtown Reno. It’s about 3 hours start to finish and ends at the Whitewater Park, where you’ll find multiple swimming holes.

Usher kicks off his new residency at Park MGM By Brock Radke

July 20 & 22-23, ticketmaster,com

Only a born entertainer like Usher could put on a Las Vegas residency show like the one he debuted last year at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace, an electrifying party that blitzed through his many R&B ballads and dance-club hits. Anyone in the audience could see how much fun this superstar was having onstage. Now he’s doubling down with a new production, My Way—The Las Vegas Residency, at the splashy Dolby Live theater at Park MGM, and Usher can’t wait to surprise and delight his fans all over again.

Now that I’ve had a year to reflect and understand how hard it was to navigate

I love immersive theater. That was intended to make you feel like, “Even though I’ve never been to Atlanta, I get a chance to be in the places that inspired these songs.” And, also, to have something a little elevated. When you come to an Usher show, I’m curating the entire experience. With the new show, there’s a special ticket that’s not just a meet-and-greet, it has a whole preshow experience that happens above the stage, and an afterparty. It’s all part of the experience. that moment and make it look like it was easy, I really have my team to thank, and fans for purchasing early and holding on. I just wanted to show up for them. There were times when it felt like it was going to fall apart (because of COVID) and restrictions … but we managed to figure it out. The show must go on. Whatever it cost us, we did it. And it wasn’t necessarily about making money, it was about that spirit that would reignite the energy in this city.

a natural transition. After considering the type of creative (content) I wanted for this next show, it would be the perfect house to give me that opportunity to shock people. I don’t want to give it all away, but I’ve been experimenting with some things onstage. I always said if I go to Las Vegas, I would want to play it my way, and maybe there’s some Frank Sinatra somewhere deep in there. I think I got some things off my first time, but this time? I really get to do it my way.

As long as the arms are open to me, I will be here. I’m going to continue to bring things and experiment and have fun in this city. But don’t just look at the tickets, look for the extended experience. There are so many hidden secrets. Investigate, look around, allow me to usher you in. Come on.

Bringing Lovers & Friends to Las Vegas was a deliberate choice on my, and my partners’, behalf, and it was a wild success. I didn’t just participate as an artist, I’m part of the festival. We went to the (Las Vegas Festival) Grounds and had a major success, and we’d love to come back again and again and again.

Digital museum Perception Las Vegas debuts with da Vinci exhibit THE OPENING DAY of Perception Las Vegas in June was accompanied by a preview of summer heat. The freestanding attraction just north of Resorts World had just laid claim to being the Strip’s first digital art museum, and at 12:30 p.m. the doors opened to the public with its first

exhibit, Leonardo: The Universal Man. Whether drawn by the curiosity about the brightly striped, yellow, black and white building itself or by the promise of a cool experience inside, visitors encounter all things da Vinci from an unprecedented perspective.

“Our first show we wanted to do was on Leonardo da Vinci, obviously, because he’s considered the true genius,” said CEO and co-creator Robert Frey. “I think if you look at his body of work … he only did 17 paintings, but was the first to person to come up with dissecting for art. He was the first

inventor of a prequel to flight, parachutes, scuba diving stuff.” Da Vinci has been the subject of exhibitions on the Strip before, mostly focused on designs from his manuscripts and three-dimensional realizations of inventions from his imagination. Frey and Perception Las Vegas co-creator Ned Collett take a different tack with their 17,000 square feet of space. They want

to transport visitors into da Vinci’s mind. One experience is dedicated to the most famous of da Vinci’s surviving paintings, the Mona Lisa. Multiple digital reproductions are installed in one gallery, with directional speakers above each one that insulate the listener from intrusive outside sound. The enigmatic smile is constant, but the images themselves morph, move and speak according to the digital specifications of Dutch multidisciplinary creative agency Twofiftyk. Another gallery serves as the embodiment of da Vinci’s imagination, where immersion into his works and processes is enabled by 360-degree projection. Da Vinci as scientist, as architect and as philosopher are explored via graphics that serve as shared synapses. Designs from his notebooks, of anatomy and war machines, float across the walls. Sometimes the inventions seem to come to life and demonstrate their functionality.

Da Vinci’s painting of The Last Supper gets its digital due as well. Frey is mum on what Perception Las Vegas will serve as the follow-up to Universal Man, but said the menu has been designated. Meanwhile, the artist most associated with the Renaissance will be the headlining resident at the only digital art gallery on the Strip for at least six months. A gift shop provides keepsakes of the experience, while the Mona Lisa room contains the most potential Instagram supply. Phones ringing may detract from the experience upon entering the room intended to immerse visitors into the genius mind of da Vinci, however, so don’t hesitate to place them in silent mode. Universal Man is inspiring; it’s entertaining; and it may provide an aesthetic escape from the summer monsoons of Las Vegas. It definitely puts a new spin on how to absorb the works of a master visionary, in a most state-of-the-art way.

Carrot Top’s rapid-fire prop humor is 24-karat comedy gold For a brief moment, before Depp v. Heard and the Oscars slap stole his thunder, Carrot Top was riding a wave. Earlier this year, he appeared on episodes of popular podcasts The Joe Rogan Experience and The Adam Corolla Show, receiving praise for his performances and engaging in discussion of how he became a pop-culture whipping boy. Rogan, a booster of authentically funny people, says he “never understood it.” Carrot Top concurs, as do members of his faithful following that pack the Atrium Showroom at the Luxor for his manic-speed comedy sets. Known primarily as the pre-eminent practitioner of prop humor in the English-speaking world, the mop-haired humorist hurls jokes and sight gags at the audience with more frequency than there is time to process. It’s one of the most unique shows in Vegas in arguably the most unique venue. Absinthe, held inside the now-iconic spiegeltent outside Caesars Palace, plays host to some of the world’s best variety acts, all anchored by the raunchy Gazillionaire and the sexy Green Fairy (pictured). Just like the spirit itself, it’s intoxicating.

Sometimes the best attractions on the Las Vegas Strip are free! And at the Conservatory and Botanical Garden, it’s a free gift that keeps on giving. The amazing displays here change throughout the year depending on the season, and this summer’s Jungle of Dreams is a feast for the eyes with its replication of an animal kingdom. The focal point is a 34-foot-tall lion, around which you’ll find zebras, giraffes, monkeys, a spotted leopard, waterfowl, frogs and more.

Get a real rush as you are whisked through New York-New York on the Big Apple Coaster. After a 180-foot climb and a 76-foot drop, travel around the exterior and through the interior of the resort at up to 67 mph, twisting, dropping another 144 feet, going through a 180-degree spiral and a half-loop maneuver. Woo-hoo! You must be 54 inches to ride the coaster, but if you aren’t, head down to the arcade, where there’s plenty to do at any height.

Your memories of David Copperfield will widely vary, depending on when you first saw him—escaping Alcatraz, disappearing the Statue of Liberty or going over Niagara Falls. But make sure you get some new memories by catching his MGM Grand residency, where you’ll gasp with wonder when not tearing up with emotion.

Celebrity chef Emeril Lagasse opened his upscale seafood restaurant, Emeril’s New Orleans Fish House, in MGM Grand more than 25 years ago, expanding to Las Vegas from New Orleans, and today the venue keeps Lagasse’s Creole cuisine as vibrant as when it was first served. Find goodies like broiled oysters, a seafood boil and Emeril’s barbecued shrimp, served with a rosemary biscuit. Like the food, the cocktails kick it up a notch—try the Fish House bourbon smash for a Mint Julep with some “Bam!” thrown in.

Light it up! In downtown Las Vegas, Fremont Street Experience features the behemoth overhead attraction known as Viva Vision. The light and music show was upgraded earlier this year, and now features 16.4 million pixels. Numerous videos, with music by artists from Imagine Dragons to Linkin Park, play up to eight times a night, and now during the day, on what is the largest video screen in the world. Visitors can also head to SlotZilla to try out the zipline that swooshes people from one end to the other, either sitting, or superhero-style. Height, weight and age restrictions apply.

Get the experience of drifting through the canals in Venice when you take a ride in the gondolas at The Venetian. Although it’s cool for the kids, it’s also perfect for adults. Not only are the visuals sweet, you’ll hear gondoliers serenading you during the ride down the man-made canals throughout the Grand Canal Shoppes, making the ride just that much more interesting. It’s been named one of the most romantic things to do in Vegas, and we’re sure your sweetheart will agree. Ah, mi amore.

Bellagio is home to some of the Strip’s finest restaurants, but one we find ourselves revisiting time and time again is Harvest. The focus here on sustainable ingredients is admirable, but the strong environmental stances are backed up with some seriously delicious food. Just wait until you dig into appetizers like pork belly lettuce wraps or main courses like a half-chicken brined in local ale and hay smoked. Best of all? You can do all this and feel very, very good about yourself!

It was understandable that the food community got seriously amped about International Smoke, a collaboration between Michael Mina and Ayesha Curry. But the hype was well-deserved. This salute to fire—the origin of all cooking—just keeps the hits coming, from Mama Mina’s falafel (you’ll never want another) to smoke St. Louis cut pork ribs, the creativity here is just off the charts. And the Lilikoi Mai Tai, served in a Spam can, is already one of our favorite cocktails.

Take your Mexican food experience up a notch—or two—at Javier’s at Aria. In addition to a collection of high-end tequilas, Javier’s boasts a huge menu, using only sustainable seafood and the highest grade of Prime Angus beef.

For one of the best combinations of food and incomparable views, try a meal at Lago by Julian Serrano. While looking at the Fountains of Bellagio through floor-to-ceiling windows, enjoy Serrano’s novel take on Italian food: small plates. This gives you the ability to try more without filling up quickly. Osso buco, potato gnocchi, tomato braised beef meatballs, bass-ricotta stuffed ravioli ... you can have it all.

Anxious to get back to shopping after sheltering in place? Head straight to Miracle Mile Shops, a 1.2-mile-long enclosed mall with more than 160 stores and restaurants. Head to MAC Cosmetics or Sephora for beauty products, and H&M, French Connection, Guess or Desigual for the latest fashions. Or grab a bite at Buffalo Wild Wings, Cabo Wabo Cantina, Lobster ME, Nacho Daddy or PBR Rock Bar & Grill.

Nachos at an Irish pub? Yup! The unique combination of potato chips, cheese sauce, chives and corned beef make Nine Fine Irishmen at New York-New York a hot spot for Irish-themed cuisine. The bar and patio are great places to enjoy a pint of Guinness, too.

Who doesn’t love Hershey’s Kisses? At Hershey’s Chocolate World at New York-New York, you can find all sorts of different flavors of one of the world’s most beloved candies, along with many other Hershey’s products. Spanning 13,000 square feet, the store features a Statue of Liberty made of almost 800 pounds of Hershey’s chocolate (sorry, you cannot eat it!), as well as 800 Hershey’s chocolates and candies. You can also customize your own chocolate bar.

What was originally supposed to be just a pop-up restaurant at Red Rock Resort quickly became so popular that it’s now a permanent installation. And one bite at Marc Vetri’s Osteria Fiorella will tell you why: It’s all about good, satisfying comfort food here, as well as a whole lot of personality. From Sal’s meatballs (with whipped ricotta) to ravioli “Francoboli” tre formaggi (with oyster mushrooms), there’s something here for everyone. Save room for dessert!

South-of-the-border dining at Diablo’s Cantina at The Mirage is a true taste treat. And, one stand-out dish is the brand’s quesadilla. Diablo’s version, which mixes chipotle chicken with jack cheese, creama fresca, made-inhouse pico de gallo and chiles toreados, results in stuffed flour-tortilla triangles of cheesy, flavor-filled deliciousness.

Enjoy a perfect pour of Guinness while listening to visiting Irish bands performing Thursday through Sunday. From shows like The Magic of Jen Kramer and the return of resident Barry Manilow, to world-class restaurants like Edge Steakhouse, there’s just so much to enjoy at Westgate Las Vegas. It’s jam-packed with great options, and it’s not far from the Strip. Definitely check this gem out!

to impress any visitor, and upon entering, the center great room has “wow!” factor to spare, featuring a soaring, three-tiered glass wall that overlooks the pool. Most of the rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows and disappearing glass walls, blurring the line between indoors and outdoors. That also goes for the kitchen, which opens to a covered outdoor kitchen thanks to sliding pocket doors. This area has so many distinctive details, from the glossy red accents and angular stainless

steel appliances and cabinetry to dual center islands, double deep bowl sinks, dual dishwashers and elongated breakfast bar with room for seven. Adjacent to the amazing kitchen space, this home’s dining room absolutely pops, thanks to disappearing corner walls (which allow for a front courtyard view). Elsewhere, you’ll find a built-in tropical fish tank and a commercial elevator to all three levels. The basement features an 11-seat theater

with state-of-the-art equipment and a private bar and lounge area. Wait until you see the bedrooms here, especially the upstairs primary bedroom! It showcases an entire wall of glass and suspends over the backyard patio—you’ll literally feel like you’re floating over the scenery. There’s also a separate sitting area, a private balcony and a bathroom with a dual shower and natural river rock accents. All told, this home has six bedrooms and eight bathrooms.

There are multiple access points to the magnificent, resort-style backyard, your own private paradise with a sparkling, centerpiece pool, shallow lounge area and spa, and sunken firepit. And, of course, you get the amenities that go with living in Ascaya, including a 23,000-square-foot clubhouse, fitness center, recreation room, pickleball courts, two-tiered tennis pavilion and much more. –Ken Miller 7 Talus Court, $10,999,000, 702.278.3222, License No. BS.0143813
