NOTES
From the Editor The Show State
It seems quaint to remember that, in the early days of Las Vegas, shows were considered “loss-leaders”—people may have flocked to see theaters full of showgirls, dancers, comedians, singers, ventriloquists and much more, but they were never considered the Real Moneymaker at casinos—that title went to gambling. But oh, how times change! Not only are shows, and entertainment in general, a major game-changer in Las Vegas, serious change has been shelled out over the last few decades to build spaces specifically for them. At last count, there are literally dozens of venues across the Las Vegas Valley, including its most recent arrivals, T-Mobile Arena and Allegiant Stadium, the latter of which is used not only for Raiders games, but for acts like Guns N’ Roses and Metallica. Clearly live entertainment has established itself as a major force here, and this week’s issue of Las Vegas Magazine is a celebration of that. For fans of Cirque du Soleil, we’ve got an in-depth look behind the scenes of one of its most spectacular shows, KÀ at MGM Grand (“All Systems Go,” p. 34). For those who like tribute acts, we’ve got a look at one of the most long-running shows in the Strip’s history, Legends in Concert at Tropicana Las Vegas, which currently celebrates the talents
of some of history’s most famous female powerhouses (“Diva Fever,” p. 40). For production show fans, the Blue Man Group at Luxor (“Acoustic Canvas,” p. 30) and Paranormal, starring Frederic Da Silva at Bally’s (“Magical Moves,” p. 17) have both been going strong for years. And live music fans no doubt already have their tickets for either Katy Perry’s residency show Play at Resorts World Las Vegas, which returns this week (“Play Time,” p. 32), or James Taylor & His All-Star Band’s upcoming show at T-Mobile Arena (“Songs and Stories,” p. 11). How about a meal with some of that live entertainment? Hamburger Mary’s, a popular Las Vegas institution, combines great food with drag queens and a whole lot of fun (“Girl Talk,” p. 13). If you just want a great meal, check out Toscana Ristorante & Bar at Eataly Las Vegas (“Florence Flair,” p. 24) or Black Tap Craft Burgers & Beer at The Venetian (“A Meal to Remember,” p. 9). Don’t miss great attractions for the whole family, including SkyJump Las Vegas, an extreme free-fall experience at The STRAT (“Jump to It,” p. 14), or REAL BODIES at Bally’s (“New Views,” p. 49). The power dynamic has definitely shifted here over the years, but one thing hasn’t changed: Las Vegas will always be the most entertaining city on the planet.

Chill Out
Escape the heat at these frozen lounges Who likes their cocktail to remain nice and cold the whole time you drink it? Who likes to have bragging pics of your vacay to show the folks back home? Who likes to hang at some of the most-unique bars and lounges when on vacay? We’ve got three of the perfect spots for you to accomplish all the above and more. Minus5 Icebar at Mandalay Bay, The Venetian and The Linq Promenade. Each is kept at a chilly 23 degrees Fahrenheit, and everywhere you look is ice, ice and more ice (we’re talking 100 tons of ice, specially made to remove all air bubbles, so it’s the clearest ice possible). Chairs, benches, tables, the bar—all made of ice. And ice carvers used chainsaws and

precision ice-carving tools to craft some of the coolest art displays throughout each venue— perfect for those Instagrammable moments. Before entering, each guest is suited up in their choice of a parka or faux-fur coat and gloves. Trust us, you’ll want to bundle up before going inside. Once inside, see how long you can “chill” before needing to step outside to get the blood flowing warm again. After a brief warm-up, get back inside, step up to the bar and order any number of delicious specialty cocktails (all served in glasses made entirely of ice) like the Icy Mudslide with Skyy Vanilla vodka, coffee liqueur and a touch a cream. For a sweet treat, try the Frosted Berries with
Skyy Wild Strawberry vodka, peach schnapps and white cranberry juice. If you’re with a group, a must-order is the Shot Ski—a long, wooden plank that holds four shot glasses, where everyone takes the shot together (shots include spirits like Fireball and Jägermeister). There’s also spiked cold brew coffee in vanilla cinnamon and café mocha flavors; and if it’s your birthday, you can get a shot for just $5. Minus5 Icebar is quite literally—and figuratively—one of the coolest things you can do on the Strip. –Kiko Miyasato Mandalay Bay, 702.740.5800, The Venetian, 702.293.3388, Linq Promenade, 702.489.3545; all 21+ after 9 p.m.

James Taylor photo by Norman Seeff VooDoo Steak photo by Mike Greer
It isn’t just the masterful songs James Taylor sings; it’s that voice, gentle yet hard-edged, a voice in which you can hear decades of life experience. And while most would pay the cost of admission just to see the iconic singer-songwriter sing and strum his guitar at T-Mobile Arena, they will no doubt be floored by the world-class band Taylor has assembled. It’s why the act is billed as James Taylor & His All-Star Band. Because even performers as towering as Taylor will admit: No one artist does it alone. That means you’ll hear full-blooded versions of Taylor classics like “Fire and Rain,” “You’ve Got a Friend,” “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You),” “Country Road,” “Carolina In My Mind,” and so many others. But those who have attended a James Taylor concert will tell you it’s not just about the music; Taylor is an adept storyteller, whether it’s the inspiration behind a particular audience favorite or a humorous anecdote. Regardless of the size of the venue he plays, Taylor just has the ability to make everyone feel like they’re sitting with him in their living room. –Ken Miller
For the Love of Beef It’s surely one of the most difficult choices a beef lover has at a Vegas steakhouse: Which cut to choose? At VooDoo Steak at Rio, the dinner for two would be a great choice. It features a 32-ounce tomahawk with salad or soup, whipped potatoes and asparagus, so you won’t go hungry. You have other options, too, from a 10-ounce filet to an 8-ounce wagyu rib cap. Seafood lovers have always felt welcome at steakhouses, and VooDoo is no excep-
tion. The Fire and Ice starter really excites the senses, with Alaskan king crab, shrimp, oysters, poke shooters, lobster medallions, crab cakes and seared scallops available for two to six people. Chicken marsala, lamb chops and Norwegian king salmon are all popular as well. And the tasting menu features surf and turf, lobster bisque and desserts like cheesecake, among other options. –Nina King Rio, 702.777.7767

Marbled With Magic
Classic cuts and decadent sides impress on every level It’s hard to not be impressed at the level of detail you encounter at Twin Creeks Steakhouse at the Silverton, not only in décor but in the dish presentation and service. As far as neighborhood steakhouses go, this is one of the better experiences you’ll find in the entire Las Vegas Valley. The cocktails here are exactly as you’d expect, with Old-Fashioneds, margaritas and Kentucky mules all ready to get your tastebuds prepped. For something a bit different, try the Smokin’ Sazerac, featuring High West Campfire whiskey and Pernod, or the Twin Creeks Sangria, combining Smooth Ambler bourbon and house-made red wine sangria. Executive chef Jaimee Pepe has packed this menu with highlights, from starters to desserts.

The grilled artichoke comes with a delightful lemon basil aioli for dipping, while the beef tartare, made with beef tenderloin, dijoinnaise and fried capers, gets a significant boost: This version is smoked, giving it a truly satisfying finish, especially when piled high on Parmesan lavash. Main courses range from meat-lover specials like a 40-ounce Creekstone Farms tomahawk for two (this absolutely has to be paired with the brandy peppercorn sauce) to vegan options such as a pan-seared cauliflower steak, served with wild mushroom risotto, a port wine reduction and pistachio vinaigrette. And for seafood fans, there’s a terrific scallops dish, served with butternut squash risotto, crispy prosciutto and apple butter.
Whatever you choose, make sure at least one of your side dishes includes the au gratin potatoes, made with russet potatoes, house-made béchamel, white cheddar, Parmesan cheese and chives. So creamy, so rich—you may order two! Other highlights include mac and cheese loaded with bacon and roasted poblano peppers; broccolini with garlic Parmesan; and Brussel sprouts fried and served with bacon and a pomegranate reduction. Almost all of the desserts here are made inhouse, with such classics as crème brulee, a chef’s trio of sorbets, and a deconstructed lemon curd, showing you all the elements used in a way that lets you enjoy each individually, if you prefer. –Ken Miller

Not only did Shin Lim handily win season 13 on America’s Got Talent, he remains the only champion to win twice (on America’s Got Talent: The Champions). No one who saw him on TV (or voted for him) was in the least bit surprised when his Las Vegas residency at The Mirage was announced in 2019. What makes Lim so accessible to audiences is his humility; he’s not afraid to share the stage with another talent, in this case fellow AGT competitor Colin Cloud, a mentalist who’s also an adept comedian, engaging the audience in between Lim’s feats of wonder. The pacing is perfect, with Lim’s elegant illusions (often scored to romantic music like Sting’s “Shape of My Heart”) punctuated by Cloud having fun with the audience. By now, most Lim fans are aware of the illusions that won him AGT and the Champions edition. And yes, Lim does perform those, although in a slightly different way than you might expect. Without giving anything away, you want to be watching the man himself as well as the cards he skillfully manipulates. Because in Lim’s world, nothing is as it seems. –Ken Miller

Darling Drinks One could say that Vanderpump Cocktail Garden is an extension of the fabulosity that is reality star Lisa Vanderpump. The cocktail menu is packed with creative recipes like the Matcha Matcha Man, a blend of the Vanderpumps’ line of vodka, matcha, fresh mint, lemon, ginger liqueur and aquafaba. The Checkmate Bitch is mixed with Stoli Hot vodka, Chacho jalapeño aguardiente, fresh pineapple, grapefruit liqueur, vanilla citrus and Angostura
bitters. The Vanderpump sangria is made with the family’s own line of red or pink wine and served with fresh berries. Vanderpump Cocktail Garden offers small-plate selections like goat cheese balls, mini beef sliders, and the Rosé Cake for Two. Petite Eats Do you want an incredibly satiated feeling? Such is the case with Julian Serrano Tapas, a bright, colorful restaurant with a vivacious bar and a chill, elegant dining room. There is really no set way to order, although the menu does group dishes into starters and classic dishes. I recommend starting with a cheese platter—Julian Serrano’s version comes with a changing selection of melt-in-your-mouth cheeses, pickled peppers, nuts and fruit jam. Just amazing. The beauty of tapas is also simply the sheer variety of offerings, from brava potatoes, a staple on every tapas menu, to seared scallops with apple butter and caramelized apple. Pulpa a la Gallega features grilled octopus and potatoes with Spanish paprika; chicken croquetas come with béchamel; and bombas are like small, round, elevated potato cakes with goat cheese inside. If you are a paella fan, Julian Serrano offers four varieties to indulge in, but you must order them early in the meal, as they can take 45 minutes to an hour to prepare. If you’ve ordered all the savory dishes you desire but wish for a sweet ending, try the churros with spicy hot chocolate. You won’t regret it. –Nina King

You’ll hear Prince’s biggest hits, of course, like “Raspberry Beret” and “Purple Rain,” but you’ll be surprised to learn there are some more obscure songs like risqué “Darling Nikki,” which is somehow as hot here as the artist himself intended it. Steakhouse has plenty of inventive options Talk to anyone who’s eaten at a Michael Mina restaurant and they’ll all undoubtedly tell you the same thing: They can’t wait to go back. The qualities that constitute a Mina restaurant are distinctive—the vibe you get from the dining room, the way the waitstaff makes you feel, the variety in the menu and, naturally, the food, all sourced from the finest purveyors and cooked to exacting standards. StripSteak may have the word “steak” in its name, but trust us, that’s only the beginning of what you’ll find here. Those return visits we referenced earlier? That’s because there will always be something on the menu you didn’t get to try.

The spirit of unadulterated fun begins immediately once you sit down and peruse cocktail names like Dr. Feelgood (a sweet, delicious libation made with bourbon, vanilla liqueur, housemade Dr. Pepper syrup and bitters), Maggie May (so refreshing with tequila, Aperol, fresh lime and agave), and Piggie Manhattan (rye, Carpano Antica and bitters). We’re not saying you have to have a cocktail to enjoy a meal here, but … Wait a minute, what am I saying? You’re in Vegas. Of course you have to have a cocktail! The appetizers might want to make you stay awhile before moving on to mains. The raw bar serves up morsels like tuna and tomato poke,
hamachi and ahi poppers, Pacific oysters, and dashi-poached shrimp cocktail, while the small plates section ranges from hot (our favorite here is “instant” bacon, a tempura oyster with daikon and a soy glaze) to cold (oh, those lobster tacos, containing pineapple, bell pepper and cilantro). Notice how we haven’t even gotten to meat yet? And yes, there’s so much to tempt you in this arena, from a Mishima Reserve, 7-ounce wagyu rib cap to a 40-ounce tomahawk for two (If you don’t order one of Mina’s amazing sauces like shitake chimichurri or truffle marrow butter, you’re truly missing out). –Ken Miller Mandalay Bay, 702.632.7200

Let Loose On Jan. 27, 1993, Liliana Lovell opened the doors to the first Coyote Ugly on Manhattan’s 1st Avenue, unleashing a chain of events that would result in a movie based on her bar and second location in the heart of Las Vegas that became an immediate hit. Lovell’s blueprint started when she discovered she had a knack for making money in the bar business. A Catholic school girl turned New York University student, Lovell found that after a few drinks she was

Host shines the sun on LGBTQ fun This year, Temptation Sundays at Luxor—the Las Vegas Strip’s only LGBTQ pool party—gets a new host, Eduardo Cordova. But there’s nothing new about the man himself when it comes to parties, hosting and creating safe spaces for the gay community. “When I moved to Las Vegas in 2005, nightlife was so intriguing to me,” says the Mexico native. “Me being gay myself, I saw there was a need for something upscale for the LGBTQ crowds. Back then there really wasn’t a scene.” By 2008, Cordova got his first shot at hosting a gay night on the Strip at the now-shuttered CatHouse at Luxor. It was a success, and many followed as he became a big name in the nightlife industry. “I worked with nightlife industry titans learning everything about the industry and having great mentors,” Cordova says. “I always knew I wanted to have my own gay bar someday and create something that elevates gay nightlife.” And he did. Cordova
opened The Garden Las Vegas in the spring of 2020, and it has quickly become the go-to spot for both the gay and straight community. “When I got a call from MGM Resorts to host Temptation Sundays, it was a no-brainer,” says Cordova, who had been attending the pool party as a guest for years. Now it’s Cordova’s job as host to create each Sunday party—from booking dancers and DJs to planning each party’s theme and celebration. You can spot Cordova every Sunday running around the venue, seeing old friends and making new ones. “There’s this sense of responsibility being a face for the events, but it’s not about me,” he says. “It’s about the purpose. Keeping the party going—that’s important, it makes me feel happy that there are companies like (MGMRI) that want to embrace and go all out. Even with The Garden; it’s bigger than The Garden. It’s about creating more spaces that are safe for the LGBTQ community.” –Kiko Miyasato

Toscana Ristorante & Bar celebrates Tuscan cuisine By Ken Miller
Perhaps no country’s cuisine puts people into so many different camps as Italy’s. Just tell the person next to you why pizza is the best Italian cuisine, and soon you’ll have started an enormous debate as to which of the various
pizzas—spread among the boot-shaped country’s north, south and central areas—you are talking about. And that’s just pizza! Just wait until you bring up pasta. Or bread. Or gravy. Heck, even tomatoes will get a discussion going. It
all goes to illustrate that people are very passionate about Italian food, and why its appeal is endless. And for an authentic representation of the Tuscan style of Italian, Toscana Ristorante & Bar in Eataly at Park MGM is a must.

sausage served with eggs (any style), or jumbo lump crab Benedict. Dinner favorites include steak frites with caramelized shallots, leg of lamb with white bean and sausage cassoulet, or escargot with parsley-garlic butter. Be sure to take home some treats from Bouchon’s bakery for your breakfast tomorrow. When it comes to a true, friendly neighborhood French café, look no further than Ohlala French Bistro (702.222.3522) in the neighborhood surrounding Summerlin. Recently celebrating its fifth anniversary serving diners from all over Las Vegas and Henderson, Ohlala is open for lunch, brunch and dinner and nails everyone’s favorite dishes, from rich onion soup topped with melty Gruyère cheese to sole meunière, pan-seared in brown butter with garlic, parsley, capers and lemon. The beef burger topped with bacon and Brie is a midday marvel, and the vegan herb arborio risotto showcases the kitchen’s stunning versatility. Speaking of favorites, the welcoming Favorite Bistro (702.844.4700) along The Linq Promenade is one of the Strip’s easiest crowd-pleasers in the French genre, serving three meals a day with a focus on comfort food and casual ambiance. It’s impossible to pass on a baguette with
baked Brie, honey and toasted hazelnuts to get the appetite going, and the classic profiteroles are the perfect meal-ender. In between, consider a croque monsieur sandwich with bechamel, a roast beef-and-provolone French dip sandwich, or seared salmon with sautéed asparagus and ideal beurre blanc sauce. There’s plenty of people-watching and fun sights and sounds when you’re dining at that Strip destination, but a whole new relaxing world awaits at neighborhood legend Marche Bacchus (702.804.8008), nestled against the man-made Lake Jacqueline in the lovely Desert Shores community. The experience begins with one of the best wine shops in the city, where you can pick your bottle and have it poured for you while dining on the patio and taking in the views and enjoying the celebrated cuisine that’s always being updated and refreshed. An everyday brunch menu was recently launched, offering everything from a truffled goat cheese Napoleon to Prince Edward Island mussels mariniere. Try surf and turf Marche Bacchus-style with seared scallops and Colorado lamb chops, served with potato purée and eggplant caponata, and tie up the experience with a layered pistachio macaron and gelato cake. –Brock Radke

Blue Man Group paints masterpieces of sound and vision
Luxor 702.262.4400
Once upon a blue moon, a trio of intrepid travelers left their home Blueniverse and landed in Las Vegas, looking for intelligent life. They found a pyramid-shaped structure where an alien named Carrot Top built a successful outpost, and calculated that a Blue Man Group could draw intelligent beings into a Luxor venue for performative engagements as did the Red Man. The Blue Man Group Theater materialized, a marshmallow supply chain was formed, and the Blue Man Group sent for their intergalactic instruments. Whether the Blue Man Group gets nutrients and energy from marshmallows has yet to be determined. Inquiries are met with blank stares, but it has been theorized that a Blue Man brain experiences increased bluerotransmitter levels when catching a marshmallow from a distance. It’s as if the marshmallows were flying on a stream of consciousness, pulled by a magnetic force into Blue Man mouths, never to be seen again. Marshmallow mayhem is an interlude between more raucous segments of the Blue Man Group show. It’s meant to challenge senses of sight and sound, with live music generated by real musicians and unorthodox tones coaxed from percussive instruments discovered or assembled by the three mute mallet pounders. Consider the air-tight calculation it takes to calibrate synthetic polymer pipes to optimal tunings while watching the Blues generate sound waves that disco producer Giorgio Moroder could appreciate, or just sit back and absorb the frequencies. While the show is monochromatic for much of the evening, the Blue Man Group has a fondness for fluorescence and color, and technique was decidedly not obtained from Bob Ross. Their mouths have more functionality than for marshmallow catching, and demonstration of the method they devised for creating canvases is one of the splashiest parts of the proceedings. The paint is edible, as are the Twinkies and Cap’N Crunch that serve as far more than junk food to a Blue Man. A Twinkie can help a Blue Man form a connection with an audience member. The sound of crunching cereal produces theta waves that cause neural oscillations, which positively affect cognitive and behavioral functioning. Cream cheese is a particular favorite of Blue Man Group. It is far less expensive than goat cheese. The performance art concept originated by Chris Wink, Matt Goldman, and Phil Stanton 30 years ago at Astor Place in New York endures because the world becomes a more baffling place with the passage of time. No one is more baffled than a Blue Man. People connect with the characters because their antics tap into the memory of being a blank slate hungry for input and fearless about making mistakes. Then again, some folks come to experience vicariously what it’s like to paint one’s face blue and act weird, and some just for the absurdity of it all. Regardless, there’s a lesson to be learned about the connective tissue that holds us together— and the Blueniversal truths that bind us all.

With her flamboyant, colorful style and infectious pop sounds, Katy Perry has long been an ideal fit for a Las Vegas Strip residency show, a dream that came to life last year when she brought the bombastic production Play to Resorts World. But the singer’s connections to this city and to that piece of land on the Strip run much deeper than the partying that inspired her hit “Waking Up in Vegas.” Perry detailed that history and the ideas behind her show recently when she was presented with the Key to the Strip by local dignitaries in a special ceremony broadcast on Resort World’s humongous hotel tower video screen.
I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my residency here and I’m so grateful to be part of the Resorts World Las Vegas family. I have a lot of roots here, and this just feels so natural to be here. My aunt was a showgirl here, my grandma was a seamstress here, my dad grew up here and ended up being a chauffeur. My parents met here and
got married here, so it’s only natural that I would be onstage here eventually. But I did not think I would be getting a key to the Strip.
I remember doing one of my first shows in Vegas and wearing this full poker spread on my head, a headband with a print of all the cards. It just always left a big impression on me. I always wanted to have a residency and I have followed … a lot of really cool artists coming here and having their own residencies. Lady Gaga was here and I got to see her on opening night, and that was amazing.
I think there is a throughthread in my whole career of just being a little OTT (over the top), and that’s exactly what Las Vegas is, so it’s a perfect match. When I sat down to create the show with my team, the first question was: Who is my Las Vegas audience? You’re not on tour, it’s not based off one record,
and it’s not going to always be just my hardcore fans. It’s going to be a real hodgepodge of wonderful people, people that are just passersby, people that are here celebrating something special, from their bachelorette to their 21st birthday. Maybe they’ve seen something online about the show, and they’re putting it together that this looks strange and fun, and it looks like we can escape a little bit. And that’s what I set out to do.
I wanted to create a show based on all the songs I’ve been able to put out, especially the ones that have been successful that people know and can sing along to. It’s a 90-minute show of song after song after song with a light storyline, and it transports you and helps you escape, and that’s something I think we can all use every once in a while. And that’s really why I think people come to Las Vegas. They want that stimulation, that dopamine, that escapism, and that’s what the show is. It’s a lot of joy, and I’m so happy to be synonymous with that word.

theater. Sure, there are rows and rows of raked seating, but there are also many massive columns that seem to resemble some sort of sci-fi movie set. In each of those columns, connected by catwalks, you’ll find multiple lights. Looking at
the stage from the audience area, you’ll see many tiers of catwalks and multiple floors on the back and in the wings of the stage area. Turn around and you’ll see floors curving around the back walls of the theater, filled with equipment; they are dedicated to sound and lighting. If you head down to the curved edge of the stage, that’s where you’ll really start noticing the difference from a traditional theater. The edge of the stage, called the boardwalk, is several feet wide and looks like wooden planks. During one recent afternoon, Jim Moran, KÀ’s technical director, who is in charge of many of the theater’s systems,

went over some of the more amazing facets of the area, including the sheer size of the pit. Glance over the edge—it’s 50 feet down. Look up—it’s 89 feet. And it seems like there’s something going on at every level (which there is). Moran points out five separate lifts used during performances in different areas of the pit, including one that is directly in front of the edge. It’s frequently been said that the biggest character in KÀ is the Sand Cliff deck, an incredible moving platform that stands nearly vertical during some scenes. And it certainly dominates the scene before you. The deck itself weighs about 50 tons, and is 50 feet long, 25 feet wide and 6 feet deep, and is perched atop a gantry crane. The deck can rotate 360 degrees and tilt in all directions. The hydraulic pistons, which move the stages, are “the longest in the world,” says Moran. There is also a power system built into the deck and lighting. Plus, there are areas which allow performers to appear from out of the stage. Video projection tiles allow different scenes to appear on the surface, from water to flame. It can also react to performers’ movements. During the battle scene, when performers scale the vertical stage, they are actually making use of 80 pegs called rod actuators. Those give the performers handholds that are highly choreo-
graphed, not only when they appear but sliding drawer. And it can come right up also when they disappear. Below the to the edges of the stage.” In 2008, the stage are two of the largest acrobatic Sand Cliff Deck and the Tatami Deck nets in the world and one of the helped KÀ win a Thea Award world’s largest airbags. Depending on the time of day, you might see set pieces being removed or replaced on the Tatami Deck (the Wheel of Death is stored here), or a green cover put on to emulate nature during the forest scene. In another area, you’ll find a giant winch with cables snaking out of it around and behind the stage. “In the forest … the big red (column) is actually moved by this— that’s our biggest winch in the theater. It’s a counterweight system. That assists in moving arbors that are on the other side of the theater,” Moran says. A row of white cabinets may remind you of heating or air-conditioning

systems, but they are actually used to house the server for the computers, which control much of the mechanical aspects of the show, which need to be timed to the absolute second. “So, all the moves of the lifts … everything is in our automation system. And everything is programmed. We don’t just kind of wing

then moistened. Why? Because it’s not only more comfortable for the artists, but it also keeps down dust, which is important, since KÀ’s systems employ thousands of sensors that might be obscured otherwise. It also keeps a potential fire hazard out of the air, which is also important, as pyrotechnics light up several scenes in KÀ. That cleanliness extends to the entire backstage area. You’ll also find storage areas for different acts throughout upper and lower levels. As Moran says, it’s all about what is needed, and where. For example, in the scene where the nanny nearly drowns, she comes down from the top level of the wing. “They come up here; and this is where they get attached, and load for that act. So, rather than bring the nanny costume up here every day for a specific thing (they store the costumes here) … In fact, they get clipped in. They have a harness with two swivels on it. That particular costume has cutouts.” In every show, the leading lady or man has the backing of an entire cast, and KÀ is no exception. “So during a show we have about 110 backstage, all in all about 135, about 70 artists—a lot of people, and it’s just as choreographed backstage as it is onstage,” says Moran. As you walk backstage, you’ll be struck by the fact that nearly every person is wearing a harness. And in fact, as you walk through the floors, you’ll see many areas where a worker can hook into. And just as the acrobats in the show rehearse their scenes, so, too, do the backstage crew; workers go through extensive training when they join the crew of KÀ; and they’ll go through that training for different areas and different jobs, from 10-14 days. For Moran, who helped open the theater back in 2005, there’s one aspect that impresses him most. “Everybody comes together and works together to make it happen. I mean, all the technical stuff’s amazing and (we) have lots of buttons to push, but really none of it happens without everybody—the artists and technicians, the management—(it) takes a big group to pull this off.”

Likewise, fans of Adele holding tickets for her postponed residency can currently gain free admission as well to catch doppelganger Janae Longo belting out “Rolling in the Deep.” Dion is currently played by Elisa Furr, who shook the rafters in November on competition series Clash of the Cover Bands. Furr has performed live with Chaka Khan and jazz bassist Stanley Clarke, and worked with bands Winger and Starship. Lady Gaga, one of Las Vegas’ latest resident headliners, is played by Tierney Allen, who began to develop her “Poker
Face” persona in 2009 while working at a boutique in Santa Monica and being told she resembled Gaga after finalizing a transaction for Kate Beckinsale. Allen went all out creating costumes and choreography, and gets mistaken for Gaga often in public. She also benefits from set design renovations that Cher tribute artist Lisa McClowry makes great use of on songs such as “If I Could Turn Back Time.” The live band shines backing up McClowry, a singer-songwriter and recording artist who refined her impersonation with her own tribute show, The Beat Goes On. It would have been a crime not to bring all four performers onstage, and they bring the house down with a cover
of a disco classic by another formidable vocal quartet in Labelle. With the entire audience singing along to “Voulez-vous coucher avec moi?” the show becomes legend in every sense. Legends in Concert Presents Legendary Divas runs at the Tropicana through Halloween, and free admission for Adele and Dion residency ticket holders continues through Sept. 5. These divas have the voices and the moves to do their chosen Legends justice. The show is electrifying, engaging and creates unparalleled audience enthusiasm.
