NOTES

From the Editor

A Guide to the Best of the Best Las Vegas’ entertainment scene is one of the most diverse you’ll find anywhere in the world. Within a city block, you’ll find a showstopping production, a four-star meal, a family attraction, a comedy show, world-famous art and so much more. Part of the reason we have to many return visitors is precisely because they couldn’t fit everything in the first (or second or third) time. And that’s where Las Vegas Magazine comes in. It’s the best way to make you’re getting the best information on the best offerings in town. It’s also a keepsake you can take home so you can begin planning that return trip. And this week’s edition is a perfect reflection of that diversity. We’ve covered nearly every base there is, including: • Entertainment. In addition to the arrival of the Red Hot Chili Peppers to Allegiant Stadium (“Global Domination,” p. 34), this week marks the debut of the pairing of reality show contestants Daniel Emmet (America’s Got Talent) and Pia Toscano (American Idol) at a show at Westgate Las Vegas (“Unified Voices,” p. 11). • Comedy. Most big cities have a thriving comedy club scene, and Las Vegas is no exception. In this issue, managing editor Nina King has collected some of the best options for fans of comedy—stand-up, performers and more (“Need a Laugh?” p. 32).

• Attractions. One of the city’s biggest and most enjoyable family experiences is Topgolf Las Vegas, and freelance writer Matt Kelemen introduces you to some of its highlights (“Swing On In,” p. 30). • Fine art. As you make your way through the Strip’s newest addition, Resorts World Las Vegas, you may notice works of art. In this issue, writer Em Jurbala takes you on a tour of some of the property’s works, along with helpful background information on each artist and the work’s message to help you enjoy it even more (“State of the Art,” p. 36). • Dining. This year saw the arrival of Wakuda, a Japanese restaurant that’s truly poised to offer a dynamic, unforgettable experience at Palazzo (“Shrine to Excellence,” p. 24), and The Bedford by Martha Stewart at Paris (“Farmhouse Fresh,” p. 13). We’ve also got updates on Strip favorites like Matteo’s Ristorante Italiano, which resumed its fantastic brunch recently (“Mid-Morning Morsels,” p. 12). • Nightlife. This week’s Friends with Benefits feature introduces you to Ruben Radilla, operations manager for Mandalay Bay’s Foundation Room ( p. 20). Shameless plug time: Subscribe to our digital edition, and you’ll be updated on all the excitement here throughout the year. Because, ultimately, we’re here for you!

Float Above the Rest

Enjoy luxury accommodations with beloved Cirque entertainment Having been to Cirque du Soleil’s magnificent production “O” several times, I was thrilled to get the offer to enjoy the show’s La Grande Expérience, a VIP-level treatment. But at the same time, I wondered if it would actually heighten what I already consider to be one of the best Strip productions of all time. Trust me: It absolutely does. La Grande Expérience begins before you even enter the “O” theater at Bellagio; you wait, along with other couples who have purchased the experience, in a comfortable room just off the main ticket line. About 40 minutes before showtime, a show representative escorts everyone to a

VIP area, stocked with champagne, fresh fruit and charcuterie. The next 30 minutes are a complete immersion into the world of “O,” including a short virtual tour behind the scenes and a visit from cast, who pose with you for commemorative photos and talk to you for a few minutes. Then it’s off to an elevator that takes you to a private box, all with ideal views of the theater and stage—you can see everything while enjoying more champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries, all while an “O” usher attends to your every need. After 24 years, “O” still stands as one of the shining jewels of Las Vegas entertainment—

more than 17 million have enjoyed its endless pleasures, from the stunning soundtrack (performed live each and every time by a nine-piece orchestra) to the stage that transforms from solid ground to a deep pool of water. The large ensemble cast includes world-class abilities of every type, from acrobats to divers to swimmers (there are even a few Olympians here), and the costumes help to create a dreamlike atmosphere. The gentle yet physical slapstick of many members is instantly endearing, giving the show a humorous spice to go along with the thrills, chills and deep emotions you’ll find yourself giving into. –Ken Miller

Fine, Fresh Flavors Virgin Hotels Las Vegas, 702.693.5000

Well, we’re happy to report that Virgin Hotels Las Vegas has primo dining options top to bottom. Right near the top is Todd English’s Olives, a version of his classic concept that was previously housed at Bellagio. Everything on English’s menu begs to be sampled. The TE signature Greek salad almost doesn’t need a fork to be enjoyed; its various, ultra-fresh ingredients like whipped feta, pepperoncini gelée, olives, tomato and cucumber ribbons are served on a bed of iceberg and radicchio. Herb ricotta-stuffed ravioli are served alongside sweet sausage ragu and Parmesan cream. Get a bit of sauce on your fork, dab it on a piece of ravioli, and take your sweet time savoring all those flavors. Larger entrées are no less impressive. Untouchable Veal Parmesan is served in a size that makes it almost resemble a pizza. The tender meat below is smothered with mozzarella, fried basil and “Nona’s ragu.” Classic chicken Milanese looks as good as it tastes, with this version served alongside arugula, Parmesan cream, tomato and lemon vinaigrette. The banana tiramisu is as nice to eat as it is to look at, a banana cake topped with espresso whipped cream. –Ken Miller Virgin Hotels Las Vegas, 702.693.5000

Speed Up A roller coaster that dips, turns and flips on the inside, outside and around a Las Vegas Strip casino-hotel? Totally, dudes! For many, many years The Big Apple Coaster has been delighting thrill seekers—and those that want a thrill just for the day—as the roller coaster hits a top speed of 67 mph. For a couple of white-knuckled minutes, feel free to scream your head off as the coaster takes you through a 180-degree heartline twist and dives from the height of 203 feet! You can even take this plunge while saying your “I do’s.” Yes, you can get married on the Big Apple Coaster—because Vegas! –Kiko Miyasato New York-New York, 702.740.6969

Unified Voices Two of television’s top talent competitions have produced a dream team. Daniel Emmet, a finalist on America’s Got Talent, and Pia Toscano, a finalist on American Idol, will perform for the first time in a onenight-only premiere at Westgate Las Vegas. Their concert, Simply the Best: A Night of Duets, is presented by Mondays Dark, and will be held at one of the most iconic showrooms in Vegas—the International Theater, host to such legendary acts as

Elvis Presley and Barbra Streisand (and, more recently, Barry Manilow). Emmet and Toscano have both shown impressive range throughout their respective careers, with Emmet’s strength being opera and Toscano’s being pop and rock. In other words, expect their show to include a bit of everything, from pop and classical to rock and Broadway. –Ken Miller Westgate Las Vegas, 7:30 p.m. Aug. 6, starting at $49.95, ticketmaster.com

Mid-Morning Morsels Italian favorite has brought back brunch

For fans of both Italian cuisine and brunch, the perfect storm on the Las Vegas Strip is Matteo’s Ristorante Italiano, which recently brought back its brunch menu. Fans of the Northern Italian-themed restaurant are no doubt familiar with chef Angelo Auriana’s passion for authenticity, quality and deliciousness. His regular menu features a wide variety of favorites, from grilled Mediterranean sea bass to slow-roasted pork belly, not to mention made-to-order pasta. And now that passion extends to the mimosa crowd! It’s certainly easy to get in a brunch frame of mind here, offered Friday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., by starting with something buzzworthy—literally. The Bloody Mary is a beast, featuring garlic-infused vodka with “Matteo’s Mix.” Add some poached shrimp and crudite and you’ve practically got a meal! If mimosas are more your thing, Matteo’s offers a range of flavors—orange, prickly pear, pineapple or blood orange. Auriana’s touches are all over the brunch menu: The Benedict, in addition to two poached eggs, olive toast and Hollandaise, features mortadella; a white bean casserole is done up Tuscan-style, with roasted mushrooms, rosemary, garlic and chili flakes; and steak and eggs gets seriously elevated in Filetto E Uova, featuring pancetta-wrapped filet mignon, pan-fried eggs, roasted potatoes and arugula. Other highlights include pappa al pomodoro, a San Marzano tomato soup with Crescenza cheese and a sunny-sideup egg, salmone marinato, cured salmon, crisp potatoes, capers, red onions, lemon and Stracchino cheese, and gamberi, sautéed shrimp with baked polenta, roasted potatoes, Dijon mustard and peperonata. How about something sweeter? Wait until you try the ricotta pancakes, with blueberries, mascarpone crema, orange marmalade and maple syrup. –Ken Miller

Let It Sink In

Luxor, 702.262.4400

Whether you’re a fan of the 1997 Leonardo DiCaprio-Kate Winslet flick or you’re curious about the 1912 catastrophe, Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition offers an understanding of that fateful journey. Stroll from room to room where you’ll find more than 250 items that have been recovered from the sunken vessel. The collection continuously evolves, too. Recently added items include paper money, which miraculously remained intact after being submerged 12,000 feet underwater for more than a hundred years. Throughout the exhibit, you’ll read about the many people who were aboard; what brought them to the ship; what they hoped to do upon arrival in America; and what family they brought along or left behind. On the Titanic, no expense was spared for first-class passengers. As you enter the Grand Staircase replica, the grandeur of the elegant metalwork, artistic glasswork and glamorous crystal chandeliers is apparent. The greatest marvel here is the Big Piece, which, as implied, stands as the largest recovered part of the wreckage to date. –Em Jurbala

Farmhouse Fresh The newest restaurant in Las Vegas, The Bedford by Martha Stewart, opens this week in Paris. The décor is inspired by Stewart’s New York farmhouse, a version of which has been seen in many episodes of Stewart’s TV shows. The menu at The Bedford features a mix of signature dishes and seasonal offerings featuring local sources and some of Stewart’s favorite brands. In a release, Stewart said, “Our menu will be delicious, depicting the very same kinds of foods I serve my friends and family. Dining at The Bedford will be immersive, fun, unexpected, and utterly delectable.” –Nina King Paris, 702.946.7000

You can zipline Haley’s Comet to the Emporium Arcade Bar Las Vegas and play some of your favorite arcade games of all time, as well as pinball and foosball. It might be best to promenade around the bi-level building first and take in the entirety of AREA15’s offerings. Burning Up

Cure your night fever at tribute show In 1978, I was obsessed with two movies: Grease and Saturday Night Fever. I went to see Grease three times (waiting in line what seemed like hours each time), and although I was too young to see Fever, I was struck by two things: Its poster, featuring a mythical-looking John Travolta, striking his now-classic disco pose in a white suit; and the soundtrack, particularly the tracks by the Bees Gees—I had simply not heard anything like it before. To this day, that music still captivates me and takes me back. In other words, I’m the ideal audience for The Australian Bee Gees Show, a tribute to the legendary trio of The Brothers Gibb—Maurice, Robin and Barry, rendered beautifully by Wayne Hosk-

16

ing, David Scott and Michael Clift, respectively (on the night I attended, James Simpson and Matthew Baldoni filled in as Robin and Barry). They bring back 1978 to brilliant, vivid life, delivering crisp, note-perfect renditions of not only every Fever classic they wrote, either for themselves or other artists—“Stayin’ Alive,” “How Deep Is Your Love,” “Night Fever,” “You Should Be Dancing,” “More Than a Woman,” “If I Can’t Have You” and “Jive Talkin’”—but also the theme to Grease, written by Barry. (The Bee Gees were simply everywhere back then!) But that’s only the beginning of the fun on tap. The trio performs nearly 30 songs over the course of 70 minutes, some in their entirety,

some in small snippets or as part of medleys. There’s also a fair amount of humor throughout— Hosking will comment on how good that night’s audience is at singing along (and how he says it every night, but really means it this time), and during a moment when all three men are singing into one microphone, Hosking gets forced to the side so that just two men can sing, and he’s not sure what to do with himself until rejoining his bandmates at the mic. Best of all, the audience is fully encouraged to dance at “Club Mo,” off to the side of the stage. When the disco starts, the theater is transformed into a nightclub—and people like me are transported right back to 1978. –Ken Miller

Dressing Up ‘Classics’

Sahara Las Vegas, 702.761.7610

Sip Away Tucked close to Light Nightclub in Mandalay Bay is S Bar, an elevated lounge in the former Red Square area, specializing in craft cocktails. And, boy, they’re good. There Should Be Unicorns features hibiscus gin, nigori sake and strawberry cream soda, accented by cream, a strawberry and sprinkles. Other options are the Snow Globe, with mezcal, green tea citrus cordial, lime and grapefruit tonic, and the Starry Night, with pear brandy, lemon, butterfly pea flower and sparkling rosé. –Nina King Mandalay Bay, 702.632.7707

Inside the beautifully renovated Sahara Las Vegas you’ll find one of the best restaurants in all of Vegas, Bazaar Meat by José Andrés. The interior is gorgeous. Bazaar Meat is essentially a steakhouse, but with some of the most innovative “classics” you’ll find. It’s an exciting menu, from appetizers to entrées—known for foie gras cotton candy mini cones, liquid olives and gazpacho shots. Beef carpaccio is a classic, and you can get that here with sirloin, Savora mustard and rolls. But you’ll also find the beefsteak tomato tartare, a dish that is vegan, but looks like a tartare—it’s incredibly flavorful, too. Go for salmon tartare or the jamón Ibérico de bellota. The ham has wowed fans for years, and amazingly really tastes of acorn. Get oysters or king crab from the raw bar, or a “Not Your Everyday Caprese” salad, where the heirloom tomatoes and basil pesto are accompanied by liquid mozzarella. And the fire pit, dominating the kitchen, issues forth such things as a quarter of a suckling pig, dry-aged strip loin in monumental sizes (20 ounces), or the more petite flat-iron steak (8 ounces). Each steak is sourced from a producer from New Zealand to Texas. –Nina King

Elevated Experience The Eiffel Tower Viewing Deck really is a cool attraction on the Las Vegas Strip—and one with some of the best views of said Strip. Hop aboard the elevator—with glass walls so you can watch as you climb higher and higher—that takes riders 46 stories into the air to the top of the half-scale replica of the real deal in France. Ruben Radilla

Taking his career to the top Ruben Radilla is the definition of climbing the ladder to success. Today, he sits at the top— literally and figuratively—as the operations manager for Foundation Room on the 63rd floor of Mandalay Bay. But he started at the bottom—ground level at a pool, to be more exact. His first job in the hospitality industry was at the pool at Caesars Palace, where he worked as a lifeguard. “That was my first Strip job,” Radilla says. “When I was a lifeguard, I watched how all the other positions worked together— servers, bartenders, managers, bussers—and I saw how cool it was.” When a position opened at Caesars’ nightclub, Omnia, he applied and worked as a beverage runner for two years. Then a busser position opened at Foundation Room in 2017. After a few years, Radilla had a management opportunity downtown—he took the position and gathered as much experience as possible. Then 2021 rolled around and Radilla found out

that Foundation Room was looking for a new operations manager. He landed the job. “It’s big shoes to fill,” Radilla says. “You don’t want to drop the ball. This is one of the longest-running club/bar/restaurants. This place has an identity already because of how long it’s been here. So my role is not to change it but revolutionize it and still maintain that traditional vibe.” As the ops manager, it’s Radilla’s duty to make sure everything runs smoothly, and that the staff and guests are taken care of. You’ll often see him roaming through Foundation Room, dressed to the nines, and interacting with guests and VIPs. As Radilla reflects on his career, he looks toward the future—even hoping to own his own nightclub one day. “To own something like this would be awesome,” he says, looking around Foundation Room. “But the ultimate goal is to keep climbing the ladder, because there’s always glory in achievement.” –Kiko Miyasato

Ladies, feel like freeing the girls and cutting out some tan lines? Check out topless dayclubs like Bare Pool Lounge at The Mirage and Moorea Beach Club at Mandalay Bay. Both have tropical vibes, plenty of ways to lounge around the pool and both offer a safe and comfortable environment to let loose. Love those tropical vibes? While it might be harder to find that vibe in the desert, Élia Beach Club at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas comes close by offering actual sandy beaches. Wet Republic at MGM Grand holds the torch for wild parties soundtracked by some of the world’s top EDM DJs like Steve Aoki and Martin Garrix. This is also a dayclub that has some of the most luxurious and well-appointed bungalows for an indulgent VIP adventure poolside. The torch also burns bright on the rooftop dayclub Drai’s Beachclub at The Cromwell. Here, guests can listen to live hip-hop DJs and performances, chill in one of two huge pools or in a private dipping pool right outside the cabana. And the Strip’s newest party pool, Ayu Dayclub

Wakuda takes Japanese cuisine to the next level By KEN MILLER

THERE ARE MANY next-level dining experiences to enjoy on the Las Vegas Strip, places where money is no object and memories last a lifetime. One of those just arrived: the ultra-exclusive Wakuda. There’s currently only one other in the world (it’s in Singapore, but there are plans to open several more in the coming years), so unless you have the budget to travel overseas, Las Vegas is your best bet to enjoy this culinary masterwork. This restaurant oozes opulence from every square inch. Warm tones dominate

All cuisine here is inspired by the Shinjuku ward in Tokyo, known for, among other things, its small restaurants, bars and izakaya. Tetsuya’s goal is to really heighten the flavors that make Japanese cuisine so unique and memorable, and his signature dishes cover a wide gamut of seafoods and meats. New Zealand Ora King salmon makes an appearance in both hot versions (grilled and marinated in koji and ginger) and cold (nigiri, a roll with finger lime, lemon zest and salt, and sushi accompanied by yuzu kosho, a Japanese condiment made with fresh chilies). Lobster also peppers this menu, from cold dishes like Canadian lobster, marinated in citrus and vinegar with sea asparagus and shellfish vinaigrette, and lobster sushi, with lobster jus and tarragon, to grilled specialties like a whole lobster with shiro shoyu butter. Kanpachi carpaccio is so tender and flavorful, served with Wakuda

ponzu. Sushi roll fans will want to try the Futomaki, stuffed with braised shitake, cucumber, snow crab, tamagoyaki, oboro, anago and mushi ebi. The meat selection here is without peer. Tetsuya uses the finest Australian grassfed beef in his Prime 6-ounce tenderloin, while his selection of Japanese A5 wagyu includes A Taste of Wagyu, featuring Yaki Shamu Omi beef with egg yolk and his signature sukiyaki sauce. Or opt for Tasmanian washu rib-eye, served with karashi-su miso. Dessert here is equally sublime, especially the “stone” chocolate orange Cointreau mousse. It looks like a river rock, but your server cracks its white chocolate shell with a spoon (get your phones out for some cool video!), revealing an orange chocolate mousse, Cointreau sponge cake with a vanilla mousse, hazelnut and praline. It’s a light and delicate finish to an exquisite meal.

duck fried rice, and you’ll be well-fueled for the next step on the Strip. At Mayfair Supper Club (702.693.8876) at Bellagio, the show is built into the dining experience, which means you don’t need to hop around multiple venues to have incredible cocktails and food, a full-scale musical stage production, and a clubby, dance-ready environment later in the evening. Mayfair does it all and throws in magnificent views of the Bellagio fountains to boot. But you’ll be paying equal attention to what’s on your plate, with luxurious creations like the wagyu beef and caviar hand roll, seared foie gras with stone fruit purée, garlic-crusted prime rib with fresh horseradish, Maine lobster thermidor and whole Dover sole. At Mayfair, the food is just as memorable as the entertainment. Plenty of Vegas visitors (and locals, too) are starting their night with a return to the recently reopened Palms casino resort, and the center of energy at this off-Strip spot is the regal Scotch 80 Prime steakhouse (866.942.7780). The restaurant’s design feels both classic and modern, and every table and booth has its own level of intimacy that makes you feel special. And the menu hits all the right notes, from stellar seafood towers and perfect Caesar salads to your favorite cut of wood-grilled steaks and chops served with all the trimmings. Check out signatures like the potato chip-crusted jumbo lump crab cakes and the “Millionaire’s Maccheroni” pasta with prosciutto, black truffle, poached egg and Parmigiano-Reggiano cream sauce. Decadence makes sense at Scotch 80. Vibe dining exists in Summerlin, too. La Neta Cocina Y Lounge (702.476.5484) has taken over the northern end of the Downtown Summerlin complex, attracting a daytime and nightlife crowd for rowdy Sunday brunches, happy hour meetups in the expansive bar and lounge area, and fun dinners for birthdays and bachelor or bachelorette parties. Sample different flavors with on-tap margaritas and pass around platters of paella, chili-braised barbacoa beef short ribs and pan-fried branzino as you toast to whatever the night will bring. –Brock Radke

Topgolf Las Vegas is a fantasy sports venue for all seasons By Matt Kelemen Imagine teeing up on Las Vegas Boulevard in front of MGM Grand Resort, ignoring the cacophony of horns, facing north with a golf ball at your feet and a driver in your hands. Resort hotels line the fairway, with a large water hazard

on the left in front of the Bellagio. The chance to swing and find that sweet spot that sends the ball sailing 300 yards up the Strip is, alas, an impossible dream. The possible dream is Topgolf Las Vegas, where golfers across the skill spectrum can aim for the Strip’s skyline. Las Vegas has one of the world’s most beautifully designed and exclusive courses in Shadow Creek, but for a considerably smaller fee a northward view of the Strip becomes an incomparable backdrop for the course of multicolored targets in Topgolf territory. The balls have an obstacle in backstop netting

that also serves as a landmark for the four-level complex of climate-controlled hitting bays adjacent to MGM Resort, but Topgolf Las Vegas offers unlimited game play passes on weekdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. through the end of August and stays open until 1 a.m. year-round. Guests back for the first time since before the pandemic will discover a new high-tech amenity in the Toptracer tracking systems that serve up instant replays on HDTV screens in every bay. Experienced golfers can aim for zones within the targets and place complete focus on their swing, since they can

check the Toptracer replay to see where the computer-chip enhanced balls land. Less-skilled golfers can aim for the targets, while neophytes can teach themselves how club design relates to distance with color-coded irons that correlate to the distance of the targets. The system makes it easy for up to eight

players with varying skill to get the hang of any of more than a dozen games, including signature option Topgolf and one based on Angry Birds. Virtual courses include Pebble Beach, St. Andrews, Spanish Bay and Spyglass Hill. A few minutes under the tutelage of a Topgolf pro at the onset of a bay session could give a guest the edge on the competition and possibly improve a swing permanently. Other newbies can hook and slice to their heart’s content as scores register on screen, and visitors are welcome to bring their own clubs. A large menu of shareables, burgers, sandwiches and breakfasts as well as full bar service keeps the good times rolling in the bays or in the adults-only pools occupying upper levels. Indoor viewing areas are tuned into UFC for fight nights and will likely feature Golden Knights or Raiders games unless a contingent of visitors absolutely, positively needs to catch their hometown action between rounds of Topgolf. Fantasy football freaks can get their fixes at Topgolf, too, with several packages to choose from including an Ultimate VIP Fantasy Experience in Topgolf’s timely Hublot Chairman’s Suite. For those who prefer smaller, round, micro-chipped balls, Topgolf Las Vegas is a fantasy for all seasons.

It’s been a trying time lately, and we all need a laugh. Here in Vegas there’s a rich comedy scene, with clubs that have been open for years and regular shows by top comedians (many of whom call Vegas home). Take The Mirage’s Aces of Comedy series, where such stars as Ray Romano and David Spade regularly play. This week, Kathleen Madigan delivers short, punchy jokes plus pithy comments on everyday life on Aug. 5.; improvisation-

al genius Chico Bean of Wild ’N Out fame plays Aug. 6; and Jim Jefferies performs on Aug. 12-13. Down the street at MGM Grand, Brad Garrett has his own club, where a variety of acts play regularly along with up-and-comers. Garrett first opened the Brad Garrett Comedy Club in a small venue, but moved into a much larger space after the pandemic (and he has a lounge next door with live music, perfect for grabbing a drink before Chico Bean

Also on the Strip, the venerated Laugh Factory at Tropicana Las Vegas hosts Jon Lovitz through Aug. 3; you’ll know Lovitz from Saturday Night Live, The Critic and many films. The Laugh Factory is a favorite among comedy fans, with plenty of seating and a bar in the back. New York-New York recently opened the variety show Mad Apple, where you’ll find trademark Cirque du Soleil acts and music, but also several stand-up comedy acts—Brad Williams

Brad Garrett

plays here currently. Those acts rotate every few months, so if this is your jam, catch him now. North on Las Vegas Boulevard, you’ll find The Eddie Griffin Experience, where the irreverent comedian and actor has had his own show at Sahara Las Vegas for several years. He plays Monday through Wednesday, which makes it easy to fit into a busy Vegas schedule. At The Strat, the L.A. Comedy Club features a rotating lineup of touring acts at 8 p.m. (Willie Farrell from Aug. 1-7) and an early show at 6 p.m., James Michael’s Redneck Comedy Magic Show—don’t take yourself seriously here. After the 8 p.m. show, at 10 p.m., Butch Bradley plays Thursday through Monday and Bret Ernst

Tuesday through Wednesday, each roping in a cadre of guest comedians to fill out the bill. Downtown Grand moved its Delirious Comedy Club to a bigger venue after the pandemic and has a rotating lineup of comedians at the 8 p.m. show. Vegas favorite Kathleen Dunbar plays Aug. 4-7. The House of Magic provides an outlet for talented illusionists at 6 p.m., while resident headliner Don Barnhart takes the 10 p.m. show. At the Plaza, you’ll find a variety of comedians featured in The Comedy Works in its plush showroom, from new names to veterans of the scene. This week, Rodney Laney plays on Aug. 5-6. Laney, who released his first book last year (a memoir and a guide to meditation), has appeared on The Late Late Show and Premium Blend, as well as comedy specials. Plus, you’ll find plenty of other comedy acts in Vegas in their own shows, like Tape Face at Harrah’s and Piff the Magic Dragon at Flamingo, and as comedic spice in others, like Shayma Tash in Fantasy. So go ahead and let those giggles out— there’s no laugh track in Vegas, except what you provide yourself.

STATE OF THE

Resorts World Las Vegas delivers a diverse and expansive program

Home to an eclectic collection of artworks, Resorts World Las Vegas takes a refreshing approach to casino art with its self-guided art tour and exceptional attention to detail. Prepare to be delighted, art lovers, because this collection is like no other. Grab your phone, throw on a good pair of walking shoes, and take a stroll through this combination of modern and historical works,

made interactive through QR codes that guests can scan for additional information. There really is no bad place to start; you’ll find intentionally conceptualized, crafted and curated work anywhere you go. “Being that many of our areas are open to the public, we often have to consider many different cultures when selecting subject matter,” says Darla Real, director of interior

design. “Art should be evocative and create a conversation, but we are careful to not create controversy.” Perhaps you’d like to start by strolling through Resorts World’s three lobbies: • In the Conrad lobby, you can find David Spriggs’ Holos, an awe-inspiring installation consisting of 20 individually painted acrylic planes that align to create one whirling, spherical entity. Be sure to move all the way around this piece, as its dimensionality shifts depending on your perspective. • Continue to the Crockfords lobby, where you’ll find Samurai Cat by Hiro Ando, a contemporary take on the traditional maneki-neko, or lucky cat. Ando, a Japanese neo-pop artist, creates work that combines tradition with contemporary elements and has become well-known for his cat-like sculpture. Symbols of luck have always had a place in Las Vegas. After all, this city is built on luck, so it’s exciting to see a different take on the tradition this city is built on. Is the lucky cat a new concept? Of course not, but the idea of taking a traditional token of good fortune, reimagining its design, and prominently featuring it in a town flooded with horseshoes and triple sevens adds an element of identity to the property. • The Hilton lobby features the colossal Hippo Wild Ride By Gillie and Marc. The bronze sculpture commemorates endangered species and promotes wildlife conservation. Also in this lobby, you’ll find Michelangelo Bastiani’s Clouds and Jars, a digital installation featuring holograms of

graceful ballerinas and trapeze artists, contained within glass jars. As you tour the property, a common theme becomes incredibly apparent: Resorts World is full of animals! And

that’s no coincidence. “We as humans relate to animals from a very young age, being given teddy bears or pets as children, or watching cartoon animals on Saturday mornings,” says Real. “The introduction of animals,

in many different forms, is meant to create a surprise, provide some delight and leave our guests with a feeling of amusement.” On your way to the casino floor, you’ll pass the High Limit

Lounge, which houses its very own beast: Louis-Vuitton Doberman by Herb Williams. Made entirely out of crayons, the form brings whimsy to the space while enhancing its luxurious appearance. Another creature awaits on the casino

floor. Belgian artist William Sweetlove’s Cloned Bulldog with Pet Bottle awaits, to be exact. Fitted with rain boots and carrying a water bottle on its back, this sculpture represents a future in which there’s a lack of fresh drinking

water and an excess of ocean water. Sweetlove’s dadaist combination of irony, surrealism and pop art carries a clear message about climate change throughout much of his work. The chrome-finished clone on display at Resorts World stands as a reminder of how fragile our ecosystems are, especially in a city that uses immense quantities of water despite having a dwindling water supply. Its presence forces patrons to confront the environmental impacts of wastefulness that the human race so easily commits, and possibly encourages conservation efforts among everyone who has the pleasure of enjoying this beautiful desert oasis. While you’re on the casino floor, make sure you get a glimpse of Jae Yong Kim’s Donuts. These delightful, brightly

colored ceramic donuts add a lot of joy. I mean, seriously, how could you look at those without smiling? In fact, according to Kim’s Blank Space Art web page, the Korean artist began using donuts as a symbol of greed and gluttony, but found a lot of joy in making the ceramic sweets. Over time the iconography of the donuts evolved from

greed and gluttony to have many meanings for the artist, from providing sweet relief on a hard day to representing the cheap sugary foods many living in poverty find to be most accessible to them. This pastry-themed pottery adds depth to the collection at Resorts World. Speaking of food, you’ve done a fair amount of walking

and probably need to refuel. Luckily, there’s another piece of art you have to see at Famous Foods Street Eats. Actually, there’s two. While enjoying a nosh in this spot, you’ll find Red Hong Yi’s Tea Bag Art, a three-dimensional portrait created with 20,000 individually dyed tea bags. Contrasting many of the modern themes found

in art around the property, this installation highlights the Chinese-Malaysian artist’s cultural roots while maintaining the ingenuity that is apparent throughout Resorts World’s collection. Also featured in Famous Foods is Yi’s 10-foottall Lucky Cat sculpture (a continuation of the feline theme). The towering sculpture constructed entirely from

gold-colored coins radiates positivity and prosperity across the entire food court. From Famous Foods, make a short walk to RedTail, where you’ll be greeted by RedTail the sculpture. Custom made by Kevin Barry Fine Art, the brightly colored kitten emanates humor and exuberance. This anime critter even playfully holds a finger to its lips as if it’s just told you a secret. Maybe it’s reminding you: What happens in Vegas … you know the rest. Conclude your journey with a trek to Kusa Nori, where Red Beetle by Ichwan Noor awaits. The contorted car brings the same liveliness that many of Resorts World’s sculpture do, but it also uses the car as a symbol of what Noor calls “transportation culture.” By taking this symbol and physically reshaping it, Noor is seemingly challenging people to rethink transportation; the way we approach it, the way it affects the world around us, and ways we can do better. Admittedly, this isn’t an exhaustive list of all the art at Resorts World. There’s Andy Warhol paintings to see in the Baccarat Salon and Genting Palace’s private dining room. There’s a propertywide digital art experience called GLOW. There’s even a limited-time-only, propertywide elephant parade to raise funds and awareness for elephant welfare and conservation. The art at Resorts World is more than enough to satisfy even the most ravenous craving for high-quality art, and it’s well worth the walk. After all, why not get your steps in on vacation while looking at some sensational artwork?
