From the Editor

If you’ve never been to Las Vegas, but have an image of it in your mind, odds are that it’s downtown you are envisioning—in this case, the Fremont Street Experience. It’s one of the city’s most-fi lmed venues, a brightly lit pedestrian corridor framed by casinos like 4 Queens, The D, Circa Resort & Casino and many more. Over it hangs Viva Vision, an enormous digital display with nearly 50 million LEDs. It’s visited by millions every year. But here’s a tip for those of you who will be visiting the Experience this week: If you cross Las Vegas Boulevard and head east, you’ll encounter a side of Las Vegas not many know about yet, a network of bars, restaurants and entertainment, all with one goal in mind: Elevating your Las VegasEnterexperience.theworld of Corner Bar Management and the man behind it all, Ryan Doherty. In this issue of Las Vegas Magazine, associate editor Kiko Miyasato sat down with Doherty to talk about his accomplishments—and his plans for the future (“Man With a Plan,” p. 32). Check it out and then start planning your perfect downtown evening. But that’s just the start of what’s in store for you in this week’s issue. You’ll also learn a thing or two about Pi the Magic Dragon, the America’s Got Talent contestant who’s carved out quite a Vegas reputation over just a few short years (“Scaling the Heights,” p. 30). Speaking of magicians, we’ve also got a Q&A with Westgate Las Vegas performer Jen Kramer, who recently celebrated her 500th show at the iconic property (“Magical Moments,” p. 38). And speaking of milestones, Thunder From Down Under recently celebrated 20 years at Excalibur (“Decades of Delight,” p. 11). No doubt many of you have come this week to catch the residency everyone is talking about: Silk Sonic, the superduo of Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak that continues at Dolby Live at Park MGM. Check out our rundown of this massively popular show (“Movin’ & Groovin’,” p. 40).

Jalles Franca’s impersonation of Michael Jackson is nothing less than amazing at MJ Live, a tribute act that will have you out of your seat and dancing along to some of the greatest pop music of all time. Franca does it all in this show—the moves, the look, the voice, whether singing or talking to the audience. He’s accompanied by a keyboardist, a guitarist and a drummer, and his pitch-perfect versions of “She’s Out of My Life,” “Beat It” and “Bad” will have your jaw on the floor. Better yet are the ensemble dance numbers to such classics as “Thriller,” “Billie Jean” and, especially, “Smooth Criminal,” a number that just slays with its combination of choreography and special e ects (including, yes, that legendary Jackson lean). For fans of the younger Jackson, good news—there’s also a tribute to The Jackson 5, complete with Afro wigs, early ’70s fashions and lots of nostalgia. –Ken Miller

Shake It Up, Baby This show will make you want to twist and shout LasVegasMagazine.com @lasvegasmagazineSPOTLIGHT

An aerialist interprets “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” above a performer bound to the ground with wheels. Groupies are fashionably attired as they flash mob onto the stage for impromptu dance parties, silk rope artists slide and slither beneath golden rays during “Here Comes the Sun,” and if there’s a Blue Meanie onstage during “Glass Onion,” it does not mean Pepperland is in danger. Daredevils get high with a little help from Beatles music, trampolines, bungee cords and skate ramps. One particularly poignant segment features a trapeze duo performing to McCartney’s “Yesterday.” –Matt Kelemen The 702.792.7777Mirage,

John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr are ever-present in spirit at The Mirage, where Olivia Harrison recently made a pilgrimage to revisit the show that pays tribute to her late husband’s band. She was in Las Vegas to accept a Grammy for All Things Must Pass: 50th Anniversary Edition when she attended a performance of The Beatles LOVE by Cirque du Soleil, re-experiencing “Something” as only Mrs. George Harrison can. While there’s nothing you can do that can’t be done in Las Vegas, re-experiencing The Beatles LOVE should be high priority. Having recently passed its 16th anniversary (it debuted June 30, 2006) a shot of LOVE is just the antidote for post-pandemic blues, or anything else that ails us. That antidote begins musically when the Beatles’ career was coming to an end. After the audience is beckoned to “Come Together,” Starr’s instantly recognizable pounding from “Get Back” kicks LOVE into overdrive. That final song from the final Beatles studio album paves the way for the dancing, soaring, rolling and strolling cast members to parade onstage. The Let It Be rooftop concert at Abbey Road Studios inspires the scenario, but the abstract narrative travels back to 1940s Liverpool, where “A Day in the Life” is drawn on to reflect the turbulence of the war-torn time the Fab Four were born into. It’s also where Father McKenzie appears, writing words for a sermon that no one will hear. He’s one of many characters that come to life in the show, including sly Doctor Robert, expectant Lady Madonna, ostentatious Sgt. Pepper and stu y Mr. Piggy. A whole gang of sea creatures float in the theater-in-the-round during “Octopus’s Garden” while a winged creature tries to fly in the dead of night during “Blackbird.”

There are some truly magical moments where technology and performance meet, most sensually during “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.”

It’s been one of the Strip’s most successful male revues ever since opening nearly 30 years ago, and last month Thunder From Down Under celebrated its 20th anniver sary at Excalibur. Thousands of women have been entertained during that run, with celebrity audience members including Heidi Klum, Chrissy Teigen and countless more. The show received a proclamation from the Clark County Commission, declaring July 5-13 as Thunder From Down Under Week. If you’ve got a special occasion coming up—bachelorette party, birthday, grad uation, heck, even a divorce—this is the show to celebrate. These men fulfill every audience member’s greatest fantasy, be it a fireman, cowboy or vampire. Every seductive number includes the awesome Australians shedding strategic items of clothing, all to the deafening roar of the excited crowd. –Ken Miller Excalibur, 18+, 702.597.7600

You read the books, saw the movies and imagined what it would be like to inhabit the world of Panem. Now you can join the rebellion without having to worry about being attacked by a hive of genetically altered hornets or blade-wielding Tributes, as The Hunger Games: The Exhibition awaits inside the District at MGM Grand. Superfans can get up close to actual costumes worn by actors, interact with touch-responsive tech features and pull arrows back in bows to shoot exploding targets in the virtual shooting range that is the highlight of the attraction. Get in touch with your inner Katniss. –Matt Kelemen MGM Grand, 702.531.3826 When a steakhouse has a nearly 150-year legacy, you know you’re in for something special. The original Old Homestead Steakhouse in New York City dates back to 1868, and all that experience and knowledge is brought to bear at the Las Vegas outpost. Whether you opt for surf (Petrossian caviar with a blini accompaniment) or turf (8-ounce American wagyu rib cap or 24-ounce bone-in “Gotham” ribeye), you’ll be doing so in ultimate comfort with an attentive waitstaff and a serene ambience. Make sure to take advantage of the signature cocktail menu, highlighted by the Boulevardi-Eight (Oc tomore 11.1 Scotch, Carpano Antica and Amaro Montenegro) and Free the Diplomat (single vintage Diplomatico rum, Fernet Blanca, Liquor 43 and citrus zest from bitters). For a meal to remember, order the Ultimate Dinner for Two, where sharing is the focus. Seafood is big for all meals at ¡VIVA!, and the restaurant is known for the ceviche, with yellowtail and cucumber in a spicy leche de tigre. Shrimp cocktail is concocted with Clamato, cucumber and avocado, while the coctel mixto includes octopus, shrimp, snapper, scallops, cucumber, avocado, radish and cilantro. And although carnivores will find a ton to eat here, like chicken tinga wood-fired quesadillas (pictured), barbacoa, steak, duck mole, and ancho-rubbed lamb ribs, vegetarians haven’t been left out; enjoy grilled pineapple, beet salad, heirloom tomato salad and a tamal with kale and poblano. And the beans here are vegan as well.

Popular Mexican restaurant ¡VIVA! announced weekday lunch service this summer, adding to its brunch on the weekend, and that means more of the dishes that made this place from chef Ray Garcia such a hit. What should you look for? Well, the barbacoa melt at both brunch and lunch combines short rib and smoked Gruyère with a little chipotle Thousand Island and escabeche; and the lunch menu spotlights the torta, a bolillo stu ed with carnitas, black beans, quesillo (a cheese) and flavor-filled guacamole.

As has been glamorized in such movies as Casino and Bugsy, Las Vegas was a much di erent town when the mob was involved. And while that chapter in our history may be firmly closed, you can still go back in time and revel in the history of mobbed-up Vegas at Bugsy & Meyer’s Steakhouse, as much a great restaurant as it is a great tribute to a bygone era. The entrance to the venue is actually the “back way,” in the form of a faux bakery which leads to a variety of sights—a see-through kitchen where you can see desserts being prepared or meats aging, archival photos of Bugsy Siegel and Meyer Lansky, a raw bar, and a vast dining area that has a ’20s and ’30s vibe thanks to designer Jonathan Adler, with retro touches like a custom beaded flamingo piece (which reportedly took nearly 100 hours to create). If you ever wanted to get that speakeasy feel, this is the place to be. Classic steakhouse staples abound on the appetizer menu, from a seafood tower that goes on forever with Maine lobster, Alaskan king crab, poached shrimp and East and West coast oyster selections, to 17th century onion soup smothered in Gruyère gratin. A true highlight here is the hand-cut prime beef tartare, one of the best examples of this staple that we’ve encountered on the Strip, amplified by tru e crème fraîche and served with pan-toasted country bread. Please share! The steaks range from wet-aged to dry-aged and hit every popular cut, from filet mignon and prime bone-in ribeye to tomahawk ribeye. Other great main courses include free-range roasted chicken, domestic lamb chops, pan-seared Scottish salmon and seared diver scallops. Sides are, as you would expect, all the classics, from Brussels sprouts and sautéed onions to potato gratin and asparagus, but if you want to go a bit fancier, try signature sides like tru e potato purée, tru e Parmesan fries and lobster mac and cheese. –Ken Miller

For an appetizer that will have every head turning your way, order the Trash Can Nachos; they’re brought over in a large metal pitcher with a bottom that gives way with the press of a trigger, releasing the contents onto your plate. Now the speakeasy gets even better as it’s hosting the pop-up cocktail experience Tokyo Vice Den through October. The pop-up will highlight award-winning Japanese spirits brand House of Suntory, with a selection of new specialty cocktails and a change in décor that celebrates Japanese culture. Founded in 1899, House of Suntory is Japan’s first and oldest malt distillery, and over the years they’ve crafted a pure Japanese single-malt whiskey; more recently, they’ve expanded their brand to include gin and vodka. Specially crafted cocktails for the pop-up use Suntory’s di erent spirits beginning with the whiskey. Hambei and The Plum Tree is a mix of Suntory Toki Whisky, seasonal plum juice, soda water, a pinch of sumac and MSG and lemon peel and a garnish of pink blossom flower. The Momotaro uses Suntory Haku vodka with Maraschino liqueur, peach soju, lemon and white peach syrup, and is topped with Calpico (a noncarbonated soft drink with a flavor like vanilla yogurt), and mixed with gold glitter. This summer, Las Vegas has seen the openings of several celebrity-driven and celebrity-favorite restaurants, such as Nobu Las Vegas and The Bedford by Martha Stewart at Paris, as well as RPM Italian at The Forum Shops at Caesars.

A joy of many Italian restaurants is that dining is a leisurely, convivial experience, and RPM is no exception. The décor provides a clean palette of black and white with modern lines, and you’ll find yourself guided in your meal by a knowledgeable, white-jacketed captain, who can make informed recommendations, such as a signature cocktail. Order the Spritz & Giggles for a whimsical combo of prosecco, vodka and wild strawberry; and if you are going light on the alcohol, I recommend the N’Aperol Spritz, a tasty treat showcasing Lyre’s Amalfi spritz. It wonderfully mimics an Aperol spritz (and if you want the alcohol, order the Portofino Spritz). Be warned, if the truffled garlic bread is presented to the next table, you will find yourself ordering it for your party—it is that wonderfully fragrant.

Provolone-stuffed peppers are tasty little bites presented with marinated olives and pecorino cheese, and you may find yourself hoarding the olives. Squash blossoms, steak tartare and Prime beef meatballs all fatten up the antipasti choices, but if you are feeling even more decadent, the Maine lobster caprese with buffalo mozzarella and basil is a beautiful dish. Or go all out with the imported burrata and caviar. The Amalfitana pizette is one of the best pizzas I’ve ever had, with thinly sliced Meyer lemon and red onions giving it a lovely, tangy flavor. You’ll find a good number of pasta dishes, as befits an Italian restaurant, and the Maine lobster pansotti is a popular choice, with lobster marsala and sweet basil. The seasonal sweet corn agnolotti is stuffed with mascarpone and anointed with summer truffles. Order it now before it disappears.Ifyouwant a substantive entrée, you won’t go wrong with filet mignon and bone-in ribeye. Classic dishes include the eggplant Parmesan alla Billi (it’s a bigger portion than you think, so be careful), and spaghetti and meatballs. Maine lobster fra diavolo is served with spicy pomodoro and a side dish of Calabrian chili butter. If you still need a little something at the end, baked Alaska is so very impressive, with flames pouring down as you wait in anticipation. caprese

Brunch is a highly celebrated dining experience in Las Vegas, but what about breakfast? Perhaps the potential for late-night revelry in Sin City creates the perception that people here aren’t interested in the most important meal of the day. The truth is casino resorts and friendly neighborhoods alike are stacked with fantastic morning meal options, so set that alarm clock and enjoy— it’s worth the effort. Keep breakfast casual at Resort World’s bright and lively Sun’s Out Buns Out (702.676.6852), open daily at 7 a.m. and ready to serve some of the best egg sandwiches on the Strip. LAS VEGAS MAGAZINE 8.14.22 27 seriously tasty as well, thanks to basil pesto and heirloom cherry tomatoes on crisp sourdough. Hash House A Go Go (702.254.4646) is a veritable breakfast institution with five locations spread around the valley, including an expansive second-story diner at The Linq Hotel on the Strip and another eatery inside the Plaza in downtown Las Vegas. You can also enjoy the signature sage fried chicken and wa es, plate-sized flapjacks or spicy chorizo hash at restaurants in Summerlin, Henderson and just west of the city’s center on Sahara Avenue. This “twisted farm food” always goes big on flavor and portions, so come early and come hungry. For an upscale but similarly bold breakfast experience, check in at the Grand Lux Café (702.414.3888), easily accessible at Venetian or Palazzo locations. Open around the clock, this café truly has something for everyone with a massive amount of menu options for all three meals, but we love Grand Lux for its Florentine omelet, short rib Benedict, biscuits and gravy, and buttermilk blueberry pancakes.

Did someone say pancakes? Du-Par’s (702.636.7111) at Suncoast is a flapjack icon, a Southern California diner transplanted downtown at the historic Golden Gate for years before moving out to the burbs at the bustling location. The legendary buttermilk hotcakes are smothered in melted butter and warm maple syrup, and perfectly complemented by a center-cut ham steak, corned beef hash or pork sausage links for that stunning sweet-and-savory combination. Just one exit away along Summerlin Parkway resides one of the most popular neighborhood restaurants in Vegas history, the Bagel Café (702.255.3444). There’s clearly a specialty here, with a variety of bagels baked fresh every day and all the delicious spreads you could ever hope for ready and waiting to be smeared across a toasty round masterpiece. But you can also find cheese blintzes, egg and omelet plates, potato pancakes and smoked fish dishes to augment your bagel. A similar approach is the focus at Sadelle’s Cafe (702.693.7075) at Bellagio, the regal café just o the iconic conservatory. This is a New York-style bagel experience on the Strip, with bacon-and-egg sandwiches, huevos rancheros and steak and eggs rounding out the breakfast o erings. Six years after he made his debut at Bugsy’s Cabaret, Piff now finds himself in a larger venue with a runway that allows him to engage with the audience on a new level. No one does better crowd work on the Strip than Piff. He’s a master at deflecting disruptions to the flow of his show during audience participation segments, whether the participant is a nervous adult or mischievous adolescent. “It’s what makes the show fresh for me every night,” says Piff after a Monday night performance. “I never know who’s going to come up or what they’re going to say, or how it’s going to go, so it means I’m very present when I’m doing the show each night.”

Also very present is Mr. Piffles. Part emotional support animal and part one-dog security detail—his genteel demeanor misdirects from his powerful paws and sharp teeth—the green-clad long-haired chihuahua’s unrestrained enthusiasm and fearlessness is both contagious and integral to the onstage chemistry between himself, Piff and perpetually moving Las Vegas showgirl JadePiffSimone.hasbeen sighted performing close-up magic in front of Flamingo for passersby, who find the fire-sneezing mythical creature’s sleight-of-hand foolproof and enchanting, once they realize he doesn’t want money in exchange for taking his photo. He released his first full-length special, Reptile Dysfunction (available on YouTube), and toured with tragicomic singing clown Puddles earlier this year. It seems like the entire audience lines up outside of the showroom for photos with Piff, Mr. Piffles and Jade.

Comedy and magic meld for Piff the Magic Dragon’s hilarious show

Some say there are no second acts in the life of a magic dragon. Others say there’s no such thing as dragons, or magic. Piff the Magic Dragon proves all skeptics, dragon deniers and literary tropes wrong five nights a week from deep within his Flamingo lair. Thursdays through Mondays, he and his faithful canine cohort, Mr. Piffles, fill the Flamingo Showroom with audiences that saw him garner a golden buzzer on America’s Got Talent and nearly fool Penn & Teller. It turned out a lot of Americans thought much of Piff’s talent, although he’s quite British, and, although Penn & Teller ultimately recognized the methods behind his magic, the two celebrated illusionists were impressed by his Determinedoriginality.to be the first dragon with a magic show on the Strip, Piff convinced the Flamingo to let him set up a lair inside the iconic property where he’d vie with legendary headliners and the bombshells of “X” Burlesque for entertainment appetites. He had a base with people who saw him on AGT and Penn & Teller: Fool Us, and his reputation grew by word of mouth despite his courageous battle with, as he calls it, “reptile dysfunction.”

Corner Bar Management’s Ryan Doherty talks shop about his popular Las Vegas venues By KIKO MIYASATO

The past few years, under the CBM umbrella, Doherty and his team have continued to add hot spots to the stretch Lucky Day Cheapshot

Boston native Doherty never meant to stay in Vegas. While studying hotel management at University of Massachusetts Amherst he decided to study one semester at UNLV’s exchange program. That was 1996, and he’s been here ever since. While finishing his undergrad at UNLV, he immersed himself in Vegas’ nightlife industry. That industry led him into the world of marketing, printing and media, which led to linking up with the late Tony Hsieh, Zappos founder and downtown champion, who helped open Doherty’s business-oriented mind to the opportunities of a renaissance in a once rundown and forgotten area of the city. By 2012, Doherty had signed the lease on a building to open his first downtown venture, Commonwealth, on Fremont East. That was followed with The Laundry Room (a speakeasy inside Commonwealth) and Park on Fremont, and the launch of his hospitality group, Corner Bar Management. “We had been swept away by the romance of being downtown,” Doherty says. “I got addicted to building stuff. That was the main driver. I started diving deeper into design. I wanted to keep building more spaces. I started working with better artists. We started thinking as you build these venues, you’re breathing life into an old building, but also into the neighborhood.”

Lucky Day photo by Anthony Mair Ryan Doherty photo by Christopher DeVargas you’ve visited the downtown area of Las Vegas, you might have noticed a certain shift over the past decade. What was once an area that few tourists and even locals stepped foot on—save for under the bright lights and comforts of the Fremont Street Experience—has become a utopia for drinking, dancing, dining and the digging of cool atmospheres. One street that has received great fanfare is the Fremont East District. It’s here that you’ll find a memorable night of revelry. And that’s thanks in part to Ryan Doherty and his company, Corner Bar Management.

We’re going to continue to create new venues that do justWiththat.”all of Doherty’s venues, which is his favorite? It’s his most-recent opening, Cheapshot, and its accompanying variety show, Miss Behave’s Mavericks. “I like this venue so much right now,” he says. “Everyone always asks me what my favorite venue is, and I say, ‘Whatever the next one is.’ But I keep coming back to (Cheapshot) because it’s just so fun to watch the people onstage interacting with the audience. There’s a recipe to throwing a really good party, but there’s this whole different recipe to keeping everyone engaged for 90 minutes with the show and having lots of personalities Discopussy

And he’s right. Just take a look at the graffiti murals splattered across We All Scream, the playful art-meets-industrial space of Commonwealth, the secret-garden setting at Park on Fremont, the explosion of lights on the ceiling of Lucky Day, the retro-desert design of Peyote’s to manage and the variety act is like 14 different acts throughout the night with nine different people.” Going over his other venues, for lovers of tequila and mezcal, Lucky Day loves back with a huge assortment of the spirit and inventive cocktails. and a big dancefloor that will keep feet moving all night. For childhood whimsy mixed with adult playground, We All Scream has quickly become a hot spot for scoops of ice cream mixed with delicious cocktails, a monster sound system and a huge second-floor balcony that overlooks the action of Fremont East. While the drinks flow freely inside all his ventures, guests are in for more than a buzz. “The trendier the bar is, the shorter the lifespan will be,” he says. “Legacy matters in bars and we want to be around for decades. My goal is to build timeless venues that don’t feel gimmicky. Our spaces are essentially large-scale art projects that lean on technology, sound immersion and visual stimulation to create an environment that feels more like an art installation than a bar.”

More than 25 years later since Doherty moved to the desert city, through his many career incarnations and many popular venues, we close the conversation with what success looks like. “There is something special about rescuing an abandoned building and turning it into a The Laundry Room Peyote

They’re open all night and are inviting for every person of every walk of life to experience. So many people who walk into our venues have no idea they are entering an insanely carefully curated gallery filled with contemporary artworks.”

working establishment,” he says. “If you do that enough times in the same area, you not only revive the property, but you start breathing life into the entire neighborhood. I want them to write the story of downtown and at least have them mention us, like these guys added a layer that is still around. I want to leave Fremont Street better than when I found it. That’ll be the measure of success.”

I like to think of the show as a continually evolving thing, and while I’m proud of what I’ve created so far, I want to keep beating my own best, keep improving. It’s amazing how a tiny change in the way you say something can make a real difference in the audience reaction. Sometimes I’ll add an entirely new routine, so there are some parts that are totally new from when it first opened, but there have been lots of smaller tweaks as well. It’s been an exciting process and a fun, creative challenge. When the show was on pause, I did a lot of work making adaptations to the show so it would work well in the new normal, coming up with different variations and ways to accomplish routines. We wanted to be prepared so that no matter what, we could give the audience a fantastic experience. Audience participation is so important to me because it means every single show we do is a little different. The audience makes the show what it is. They say limitations inspire creativity and it’s true. It definitely pushed me. That’s something I love about magic, working through different challenges and figuring out the best way to do something. There are many different ways of accomplishing a routine and so many factors go into it.

The Magic of Jen Kramer recently passed its groundbreaking 500th performance at the Westgate Cabaret at Westgate Las Vegas, and it happened the day before its star’s 30th birthday. We caught up with the city’s only current headlining female magician to both celebrate the milestone and find out how her show has evolved.

There are so many things going through my mind. There are the memories made with the audience and the awesome team I get the privilege to work with at Westgate. Ultimately for me, magic is all about connecting with people, that genuine human connection, and I’m so grateful to have the opportunity to do this thing I love so much and get to connect with people through magic. It’s not just a kids’ show, it’s perfectly appropriate for kids and adults, and to me it’s just great to see families at the show. It really does remind me of the first magic shows I saw and what that meant to me when I was a kid, developing an interest in magic. I’ll see (multiple) generations coming together, and sometimes I’ll get to gather after the show and talk magic with a group of young aspiring magicians. That’s just so much fun and so rewarding. It’s a musical formula that’s not formulaic. Following their muse has paid off big time for Mars and .Paak, with An Evening with Silk Sonic the album debuting at No. 2 on Billboard ’s album charts upon its release in November. The subsequent awards season found the duo picking up honors for R&B album of the year at iHeart Radio Music Awards in March. In April, it won in all four Grammy categories the single “Leave the Door Open” was nominated for. Mars also won “Top R&B Tour” at the 2022 Billboard Music Awards in May for last year’s Bruno Mars at Park MGM residency. While recognition for the music and performances were well-earned, the awards shows gave Silk Sonic a chance to spread the gospel of soul to television audiences and garnered a ton of publicity. The duo’s performance of “Love’s Train” at BBMA “crushed,” according to NBC News.
