From the Editor Put a Ring On It

Hitting the town tonight? Stop by your concierge to pick up a copy of our sister publication, VEGAS2GO KEN EDITORMILLER It’s not a cliche; it’s very much the truth: Weddings and Las Vegas go hand in hand. As I write this editor’s note, countless couples are no doubt getting married somewhere in the city limits—some are likely getting married at drive-thrus! Hollywood is well aware of this connection; just look at a small sampling of the Vegas-set movies that deal specifically with weddings: The Hangover ; Honeymoon in Vegas; What Happens in Vegas; Last Vegas ... I could go on, but you get the point. If you’re here this week to say, “I do,” we’ve got a special treat for you. Photographer Chad Chisholm and his team scoured the city for some of the best venues to hold a ceremony, along with some of the best fashions to be dressed in when tying the knot. As you’ll see from our feature fashion spread (“Weddings, Vegas-Style,” p. 30), there’s no marriage fantasy you can’t make come true in Sin City. But a wedding is just the beginning! Before and after the ceremony, there’s plenty you (and your wedding party, if you arrived with one) can take advantage of to make it a week to remember. Start by taking in a show like Magic Mike Live Las Vegas, Channing Tatum’s all-male revue at Sahara Las Vegas, which recently added a brand new emcee, Jaclyn Marfuggi (“Leading the Boys,” p. 16 ). If you’re looking for something a bit more family-friendly, check out Mat Franco—Magic Reinvented Nightly at The Linq Hotel (“Get to Know Him,” p. 9). If your party is hungry, The Mayfair Supper Club at Bellagio has a fantastic show to go along with an unforgettable meal (“Hungry Eyes,” p. 24).

If you’d rather attend a concert full of screaming fans, you’ve got plenty of options this week, including Shania Twain’s continuing smash residency, Let’s Go!, at Planet Hollywood’s Zappos Theater (“Getcha Good,” p. 10), and the Rockzilla Tour at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas, featuring Papa Roach, Falling in Reverse and many other nu metal bands (“Monster Mash,” p. 12).

NOTES

Speaking of great meals, fans of Mexican food will enjoy Javier’s at Aria (“Lavish and Delicious,” p. 11) , while seafood lovers will defi nitely want to make a reservation for Amalfi by Bobby Flay at Caesars Palace (“A Taste of Italy,” p. 14). If Japanese cuisine is what you’re looking for, check out our Friends with Benefits feature on Shayne Galan, room chef at Su Casa at Silverton ( p. 20). Make sure to say hi to him as he’s preparing you a sushi delight! To all the soon-to-be-betrothed, we at Las Vegas Magazine wish you a long and happy life together—and plenty of vacations in Las Vegas!

Get to Know Him Mat Franco: Magic Reinvented Nightly is guaranteed to make you laugh, gasp in wonder and, just maybe, shed a tear or two. Best of all, unlike many magicians on the Las Vegas Strip, you really feel like you get to know Franco—his humble beginnings, early home videos of his attempts at magic, and his relationship with his family. In between those delightful, touching tidbits, Franco displays deft sleight-of-hand skills, making money appear in the craziest places, producing cards from thin air, making certain cards multiply until they spill all over the table, and much more. What really sets this show apart from all others is the way it ends—Franco guarantees that no two shows are alike. In other words, this is a show that never gets old. –Ken Miller

SPOTLIGHT Getcha Good Singer ready for final ‘Let’s Go!’ shows If the timing of the final stretch of dates in Shania Twain’s Planet Hollywood residency, Let’s Go! (coming a month after the release of a career-defining documentary, Not Just a Girl, on Netflix), is any indication, the singer may be taking her last lap as a live performer. If so, she’s writing that final chapter in Las Vegas where her career started—sort of. Most of her fans know she started o as Canadian country music prodigy, singing country songs in bars, and later supported her orphaned siblings by performing in a Vegas-style stage show at an Ontario resort. It was the first time she had performed o -Broadway tunes and then-popular hits such as “Wind Beneath My Wings” while wearing glamorous gowns. “It was pretty scary,” Twain recalls in Not Just a Girl. “I really didn’t know what I was doing at all. I had no idea how to sing and wear high-heeled shoes, for example, at the same time.” It was good training for a future Vegas headliner. Twain sings in high heels during Let’s Go! as well as some of the iconic outfits worn in videos such as “That Don’t Impress Me Much” and “I’m Gonna Getcha Good.” Her horseback riding skills wound up coming in handy, too. Twain’s comeback from Lyme disease, with the encouragement of Lionel Richie, is a major narrative arc in the Netflix doc, but her voice sounds fragile in scenes filmed during the pandemic. She had been doing a lot for interviews for director Joss Crowley and the vocal fry is alluring, but there was no sign she lacked the signature energy she delivers during the nearly 20 songs that make up her Zappos TheaterShesetlists.found a new sweet spot within her range as demonstrated on her latest single, which shares the title of the documentary. Whether she adds it to the set remains to be seen, but Twain’s skill at performing in heels will be amply demonstrated.

Some of the best Mexican food on the Strip meets one of the most stunning restaurants in Javier’s, a lavish space with plenty of art and a “tequila tree” to keep your eyes entertained while you sip on signature cocktails and nosh on south-of-the-border classics. It would be almost unthinkable to not have a margarita while enjoying the environs here, from the Javier’s, made with Patron reposado and Grand Marnier, to the Aroma de Mujer, which blend Chambord with Patron silver. Pair them with appetizers like a trio of ceviches—choose from among ahi, shrimp, fish or octopus. All your favorite Mexican classics are here, from chile verde made with braised pork, onions, spicy tomatillo sauce, arroz and refritos, and chicken fajitas featuring sautéed onions and tomatoes, pasilla and refritos, to a trio of enchiladas—shrimp, Dungeness crab and Maine lobster. Desserts here are serious business, so save some room! Pan de elote is a nice twist on street corn—a sweet Mexican cornbread served with vanilla ice cream. –Ken Miller Aria, 702.590.5284

There’s no stopping Penn & Teller from inventing tricks for their 20-year residency at Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino. The iconoclastic duo continually come up with concepts for their shows, and although they have no shortage of interests outside of magic, Penn & Teller used pandemic-mandated time away from the stage to come up with more than a half-dozen illusions. The downtime also allowed Teller to convalesce following prepandemic back surgeries, making it easier to make his pain invisible to audience members as he engages in the more physical aspects of the performance.Audiences will still see him defy death (especially during “Whack-A-Teller”), while Penn maintains his penchant for fire-eating, but for new and returning fans, Penn & Teller present a set of almost entirely new material. –Matt Kelemen Rio, 702.777.2782

Papa Roach photo by Darren Craig

The nu metal scene is alive and well if the Rockzilla Tour, featuring Papa Roach and Falling in Reverse, is any indication. The bands welcome Hollywood Undead and Bad Wolves for a rap-rocking, head-banging expedition that grew out of the soundtrack of upcoming horror flick The Retaliators, which stars Roach frontman Jacoby Shaddix in his movie debut and includes songs by three Rockzilla bands. Shaddix is no stranger to the camera due to the slew of videos Papa Roach has made since exploding onto the scene in 2000 with “Last Resort.” The band demonstrates continuing dedication to innovation on latest full-length album Ego Trip. Making a cameo in the film is Five Finger Death Punch’s Zoltan Bathory, whose label Better Music may have played a significant role in helping the musical core of Bad Wolves evolve into its next phase after the controversial departure of singer Tommy Vext. Vext, the voice on the Los Angeles band’s 2017 cover of The Cranberries’ “Zombie,” has been replaced by former Acacia Strain vocalist Daniel “DL” Laskiewicz, who appeared on last year’s Dear Monsters album and the Sacred Kiss EP released in July. Hollywood Undead appear in Vegas on the heels of the release of new album Hotel Kalifornia, which sounds designed to make Glenn Frey spin in his grave. The Undead are the most stylistically diverse band on the bill, with hip-hop and EDM influences, bombast and emo sensibilities conspicuous on preview tracks which were made available before Kalfornia’s Aug. 14 Fallingrelease. In Reverse hasn’t had a full-length recording out since 2017’s Coming Home but released the single “Voices in My Head/ Zombiefied” in May. Singer Ronnie Radke sounds as on the edge as ever, with the band’s music pushing state-of-the-art production boundaries and blending contemporary styles. Radke’s memoir I Can Explain is set to be released this fall, but until then fans must settle for hearing the Las Vegas native’s lyrics of life experiences live at Rockzilla. –Matt Kelemen Virgin Hotels Las Vegas, 6 p.m. Aug. 25, starting at $29 plus tax and fee. axs.com

There is no shortage of WTF moments in Las Vegas, but the thrill rides atop The STRAT SkyPod might top them all. At nearly 1,000 feet in the sky, a triple threat of death-defying experiences await: X-Scream, Insanity and Big Shot, all with their own OMG that will stir you to the core. Undoubtedly, you’ll all scream on X-Scream, a roller coaster that resembles a seesaw, which teeters over the edge of the SkyPod and vigorously wobbles back and forth like a rock-a-bye baby gone wrong. As for Insanity, there’s no better name for this carousel (which is controlled by a monstrous mechanical arm) that dangles and spins 64 feet away from the tower. But the ride that really makes the STRAT SkyPod an adrenaline-infused cuckoo’s nest is Big Shot, a pneumatically powered ride that shuttles up and down the tower’s iconic needle. –Las Vegas Magazine Sta The STRAT, 702.380.7777

They are joined by four dancers, piano, drums, bass, trombone—it’s the whole package. “The new production maintains everything audiences love about The Mayfair’s vibe, with a completely fresh entertainment experience,” said Ari Kastrati, MGM Resorts International’s chief hospitality officer, in a release when the new show wasTheintroduced.performance begins a little after 7 p.m., and we recommend you try for a reservation around that time. You’ll be ushered into the environs of The Mayfair Supper Club, a long room with plush booths tucked along two sides, a bar at one end and a central area with tables and the performance stage. Behind that, a wall of arches frames another dining area that looks out onto the Fountains of Bellagio, an attraction that provides a secondary show throughout the night. As your decadent, delicious drinks, the Copacabana, with SelvaRey silver rum, pineapple and coconut, and the Lola, with Awayuki strawberry gin, lychee and mint, arrive, you’ll notice activity all over the restaurant. Aerialists twist on hoops in several places in the dining room, pearl-draped ladies sidle along the aisles and sequined-suited gentlemen hang out on the railings. Soon, the show performers make their way to the stage as you make your way through the hamachi crudo, a delicate bite with thin slivers of calamansi and Fresno chili; you learn that Montgomery and Lowell were friends who have reunited for a final performance (Adam North wrote the underlying story). As you work your way through the heirloom tomato with olives and cured lemon, Souliér and Martinez work their way through songs such as “Crazy Little Thing Called Love.” Before you, the decadent wagyu handroll arrives, anointed with caviar, wasabi, soy glaze and gold leaf; the performers are anointed with glamorous costumes in bright pink, red, gold and metallic colors; every movement reminds you of another era, when glam evening wear was everything.

There are a surprising number of musical genres represented in the show, from jazz to postmodern jukebox interpretations. While you’re waiting for your entrée, Souliér re gales you with “Ex’s & Oh’s,” joined by two talented female dancers whose energy is incredible. Sushi dishes are slid before you, and the vegetarian tiger roll makes a lovely bite. Choreographers Dean Lee, Keo Motsepe and Shannon Mather, all with extensive pedigrees of working with top singers and dance series, developed the dance numbers. You’ll adore Martinez’ team-up with the talented pianist for an energetic version of “Twist and Shout.” Garlic-crusted prime rib, slow roasted for 10 hours, does not last so long on the plate. For a close-up bit of magic, whole Dover sole is delivered via cart and deboned tableside, and served with a caviar beurre blanc sauce. The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” and Prince’s “Purple Rain” are delivered with equal amounts of deep-seated feeling by Souliér as you wait for vegetarian pappardelle in a rosy pomodoro sauce Bellagio 702.693.8876 wagyuTablesideprime rib

Dessert deserves a special part in this evening, and as a conga line wends its way through the dining room, bringing smiles to everyone who remembers Harry Belafonte’s “Jump In the Line,” another cart rolls on up, and your server proceeds to bring a cherries jubilee to life through the medium of fire. On the table, a hickory smoke-filled glass dome conceals the Cigar, an edible chocolate and hazelnut cigar showpiece from which wafts an intoxicating aroma. And the soft-serve sundae dominates the little space left, with a variety of toppings that give you a perfect moment. There’s so much happening during your evening that there’s no way to catch it all; you’ll surely have to schedule a return trip. Said No Ceilings Entertainment co-founder Dennis Jauch, “We’re honored to have so many guests return to The Mayfair time and again—they have become regulars and we love it.

And if you can’t swing a dinner date, do not despair. The Mayfair Supper Club brings a nightlife vibe to Friday and Saturday nights with Mayfair After Dark, a wildly delicious lounge-style experience that runs until late in the evening. “We’ll continue delivering ‘wow’ moments and creating memories for everyone who walks through our doors,” said Kastrati. Whether you are a fan or a first timer to Mayfair, this production will make for an incredible night out.”

LVING Full House Southern

Southern Highlands represents one of the highest standards of living in the entire Las Vegas Valley, a sprawling, masterplanned community with plenty of golf courses, luxurious homes and convenient shopping for its residents. One of the most exclusive enclaves in Southern Highlands is The Blu s, a private, double-gated, hillside community with lavish estates. And one has just become available there, ultra-modern and fully furnished, which means you can move in today!Listed by Ivan Sher of The Ivan Sher Group, this two-story, 6,664-square-foot home on 1.68 acres is a showcase in every respect. Not only are its details sharp, angular and stylish, so are its furnishings. As you make your way through, it’s impossible to imagine the house without all its current trappings.

The curb appeal of this home is undeniable, with architectural touches that will have your guests doing a double take to admire the creativity. And that “ooh!” factor extends to the interior, starting with the first level’s indoor gathering area, theater and wet bar. This space was designed with family gatherings in mind, and it all leads to an expansive backyard with plenty of space and a large pool. Highlands home comes fully furnished

Amenities at The Bluffs include luxury spa services, spacious parks, walking trails and dog parks, not to mention the close proximity to the Southern Highlands Golf Club and excitement of the Las Vegas Strip. –Ken Miller 11106 Villa Bellagio Dr., $4,499,000. BS.0046822

Elsewhere on the first level, you’ll find a vaulted-ceiling dining room, complete with excellent views of the Las Vegas Strip, an office space with wood paneling, a great room with a fireplace, media center and kitchen with bar seating, and much more.

There’s plenty of space here for even the largest of families to spread out in complete comfort, thanks to five bedrooms and five bathrooms. (Got a lot of cars? No problem with this home’s four-car garage.) The master bedroom is the real centerpiece here, with its own courtyard that includes sitting and raised sleeping areas. Its bathroom suite is fully equipped with a tub, walk-in shower and two spacious walk-in closets. It just feels important. Because of the large lot space, there’s plenty to enjoy outside as well. In addition to the pool, there are private courtyards, reflection pools, a tiered deck, fire pits and a hot tub.
