Live music and Las Vegas have a long, rich history—going all the way back to the days of the mob-run era, acts like the Rat Pack, Liberace, Elvis Presley and so many more helped shape the city’s reputation as The Entertainment Capital of the World. And as Las Vegas has expanded and added more and more live music venues, its profi le has only increased in stature. Name any big act, now or from the past, and odds are they performed here at one point or another. No matter how many venues we build here, they all come. This week’s edition of Las Vegas Magazine is a testament to the city’s drawing power when it comes to live music. We have so many genres represented this week, and they’re all bound to sell out their respective venues. Pop band Imagine Dragons, which got its start in Las Vegas, performs at Allegiant Stadium as part of its Mercury World Tour (“Homecoming Kings,” p. 30). Also coming to Allegiant Stadium is The Stadium Tour, a rockfest featuring some of the biggest bands of the ’80s and ’90s, including Motlëy Crüe, Def Leppard, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts and Poison (“Banging the Rock ’n’ Roll Gong,” p. 14). Fans of classic rock will be in heaven. Fans of rap will be thrilled to know that rapper, songwriter, producer and Pulitzer Prize winner Kendrick Lamar also stops through town to perform at T-Mobile Arena (“Talent Unleashed,” p. 12).

LAS VEGAS MAGAZINE 9.4.22 3
Entertainment this week extends far beyond live music. Nurse Blake, one of the biggest viral sensations around, brings his unique brand of humor to The Mirage (“Great Bedside Manner,” p. 9). If you’re looking for a great production show, check out the Wild West-themed craziness called Atomic Saloon Show at The Venetian (“Oh So Wild,” p. 16 ).
While trying to choose from this dizzying array of talent, don’t forget to take some time out for a great meal. Luckily, we’ve got plenty of suggestions throughout this issue, from the massively popular Gordon Ramsay’s Hell’s Kitchen at Caesars Palace (“Star Power,” p. 24) and Nellie’s Southern Kitchen at MGM Grand (“Southern Hospitality,” p. 16 ) to Buddy V’s Ristorante at The Venetian (“Family A air,” p. 49).

Some of Blake’s humor may seem like insider baseball (he has numerous videos on the behaviors of di erent types of nurses, perhaps funny primarily to those with intimate knowledge of those environments), but there is ultimately a universality to his style—he’s extremely likable, he has a strong message, and he’s a gifted physical comedian to boot. Time to relieve some stress.

If you like roller coasters, you’re in luck! The Canyon Blaster is the world’s only indoor, double-loop, double-corkscrew coaster that reaches speeds of 55 mph; El Loco drops riders 90 feet and then twists and turns while pulling vertical G’s; and, more G’s can flip your stomach on Sling Shot where riders are shot up in the air and back down again. More rides, even some fit for the small kiddos, including bumper cars and a giant carousel, includes the out-of-control pirate ship that swings and hangs in the air while eliciting exciting screams from its riders.

During his lifetime, Michael Jackson exuded a childlike wonder, an attitude that proved infectious for his millions of fans. That sense of wonder pervades each and every second of Cirque du Soleil’s Michael Jackson ONE at Mandalay Bay, a celebration of music, legacy, philosophy and persona.
From appetizers and cocktails to main courses and desserts, One Steakhouse provides one of the most memorable meals you’re likely to have in Vegas. Start with crispy tiger shrimp with cherry pepper aioli, paired with a signature cocktail like the Scorpion Bite (Maker’s Mark, Barrow’s Intense Ginger, grapefruit juice and honey-jalapeño syrup) before moving to Midwestern ranch-provided steaks like filet mignon, cold seafood like tuna poke, and desserts like a raspberry lemon baked Alaska. –Ken Miller Virgin Hotels Las Vegas, 702.693.5000
Want to fly? Well, now you can, on FLY LINQ Zipline between Flamingo and The Linq in The Linq Promenade. This attraction will have you soaring over the heads of your friends, your family and total strangers at speeds of up to 35 mph. The tower you take o from is approximately 12 stories high and you’ll actually fly more than 1,100 feet to the High Roller.
The action climaxes in an amazing hologram sequence, with Jackson appearing alongside the misfits for a performance of “Man in the Mirror,” disappearing at key moments and reappearing at others.
The show is a series of vignettes tied together loosely by four young “misfits” who are pursued by baddies as they attempt to “save” Jackson’s music, rushing in and out of segments, sometimes participating in the activity onstage, from bungee acrobatics during “Beat It” to some hilarious pantomime as Jackson’s glove seemingly comes to life during “Working Day and Night.”

There are plenty of lines available, so the whole crew can fly on the exhilarating ride at the same time. And if you want to guarantee that, it is possible to reserve the whole ride (for a price, of course). However, height and weight restrictions are in play, so check ahead to make sure you can safely soar (the range is from 60 to 300 pounds, and from 3 foot 4 inches to 6 foot 8 inches).Andwe recommend you eat afterward, just to be on the safe side. –Nina King The Linq Promenade, 702.777.2782

Lamar, who brings The Big Steppers Tour with openers Baby Keem and Tanna Leone to T-Mobile Arena this Friday, is the undisputed champion of lyrical flow. His timbre and tone are genetic gifts, but his delivery, speed and content evolved from hard work, focus and discipline. It’s been five years since the release of Lamar’s fourth album, Damn, but it doesn’t take even one full listen to Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers to prove the wait was worthwhile. Released in May, Mr. Morale feels like a release of a half-decade’s worth of words fired like a barrage of arrows so numerous they cloud the sky. It’s worth catching Lamar live just to be overwhelmed by his recall ability. His mind works at super speed and songs are so packed with messages, imagery, shout-outs, post-traumatic stress and hope that layers and levels of meaning can be discerned on repeated listens. Sometimes he’s Dada-esque, other times every seemingly disparate line contributes to a whole e ect.

Baby Keem guests on trunk-rattling album track “Savior” and Leone adds her voice to wobbly “Mr. Morale,” making their appearances during Lamar’s set a reasonable expectation. Walking away inspired after the show is a safe bet as well. Re-creating the uplifting vibe on Mr. Morale in a live setting was of high priority for Lamar, and reviews of the tour’s concerts so far indicate he’s been successful. –Matt Kelemen T-Mobile Arena, 7:30 p.m. Sept. 9, starting at $69 plus tax and fee. axs.com

If Kendrick Lamar hasn’t made the best minimalist music video of all time with The Heart Part 5 he inarguably deserves accolades for ingenuity. Shot against a red background, a pensive Lamar unleashes torrent after torrent of consciousness hip-hop verse as his body moves to the rhythm like he’s softly absorbing bullets and it looks like that’s all we’ll see until a wave of his hand and deepfake tech turn him into O.J. Simpson. Just as the mind processes the face swap, he switches to Will Smith, then Jussie Smollett, Kobe Bryant and Nipsey Hussle.

Half roast chicken, Skuna Bay salmon and Alaskan red king crab legs give you even more options for your entrée. Top those off with caramelized onions, seared scallops, or roasted bone marrow. For a decadent side, the portobello mushroom comes stuffed with Boursin cheese, or mac and cheese, with three cheeses and black truffle. And dessert? Try a trio of ice cream, cheesecake or Tahitian créme brûlée—or go big with a chocolate sphere with brownie, praline nut crunch, chocolate mousse and salted caramel sauce. –Nina King Westgate Las Vegas, 702.732.5277

When you first take your seat at Tournament of Kings, you’re struck by the fact that you’re in a section that represents a country—Romania, Ireland, Spain, Austria, France or Hungary. As you watch the arena’s various sections fill up, you’re brought a meal that consists entirely of finger foods like a Cornish game hen, a bun and steamed veggies (no utensils here; the experience is meant to replicate a medieval feast). But old or young, you’ll be smiling from start to finish as the Knights of the Round Table compete for their country’s supremacy. As the action unfolds, you cheer when your coun try’s knight mounts a steed and competes in various demonstrations of skill, from jousting to sword fighting. And just when things are getting interesting, the forces of darkness descend on the proceedings.
For one of the best steaks in Vegas, head to Edge Steakhouse at Westgate Las Vegas. Start with a classic shrimp cocktail. Wedge salads and French onion soup are always popular—and with good reason. Cuts include filet mignon, bone-in and dry-aged, ribeyes, dry-aged New York strip, and a wagyu strip loin that’s to die for.
Meaty GoodnessIt’s true, you can find real flamingos at the Flamingo. In the Wildlife Habitat , flamingos balance on those long, long legs, and extend their graceful necks across a 4-acre enclave, where a number of other creatures reside. You’ll find koi, sturgeon, ducks and other waterfowl, pelicans, turtles, songbirds and hummingbirds among other animals, in restful gardens with waterfalls, ponds and streams meandering about. And a stop at this free attraction is a perfect respite when you need to take a breather from the hustle and bustle of Las Vegas.
There’s much fighting, conquering and, as you would expect, much rejoicing. Tournament of Kings is as old as the Excalibur, and that’s not by accident; it remains one of the finest shows on the Strip for all ages.

Revel in Royalty The Necked Truth
The bassist then had to brainstorm a rationale for breaking the 2014 contract he signed with Vince Neil, Mick Mars and Tommy Lee that guaranteed their subsequent live tour would be their last. He found it after the success of 2019 band biopic The Dirt maximized Mötley Crüe’s potential for a successful reunion, and all four members were in playing shape.
Sixx’s other issue was choosing a co-headliner and support acts. Def Leppard were friends of the Crüe, spent the pandemic working on a new album and were raring to celebrate the May release of Diamond Star Halos in style. The title is band slang inspired by a lyric from T. Rex’s “Get It On,” and loosely translates as songs that bang Def Leppard’s rock ’n’ roll gong. Joan Jett and the Blackhearts banged Sixx’s rock ’n’ roll gong. Jett’s “I Love Rock ’n’ Roll” opened the door for rock to rule on ’80s pop charts, a door that Motley Crüe kicked o the hinges with the release of 1983 album Shout at the Devil. Sixx wasn’t sure about booking a band that came through that door after them, but nearly four decades after Poison took Crüe’s glam-era style and high-altitude hair to new heights, fans made it clear Bret Michaels and company would complete a well-rounded lineup.

According to Nikki Sixx in his 2021 book The First 21, The Stadium Tour came about after his agent took him to a Dodgers game. Sixx snarkily asked why Mötley Crüe had never performed at Dodger Stadium and was reminded that he broke up the band. Before he knew it, the Crüe was booked in 30 venues designed for major league sports teams and the masses that follow them.

It’s official: No celebrity chef has dominated Las Vegas quite like Gordon Ramsay has. In addition to his existing empire of five restaurants that stretch across four Strip properties, Ramsay is about to open his sixth later this year—Ram say’s Kitchen at Harrah’s. There seems to be no saturation point for Ramsay outposts in the desert, much to the delight of his fans. But no matter how prolific the spirited Scot remains, his flagship seems destined to remain Gordon Ramsay’s Hell’s Kitchen, one of the hardest reservations to snag in town. This restaurant just has it all: the perfect location in the Roman Plaza, where you can also find the enormously successful show Ab sinthe right next door; a great look, including the now-iconic red and blue kitchens to mirror those used on the show, now entering its 21st season; and a menu reflecting all the famous dishes Ramsay is so particular about (although we get the feeling not one of these dishes will be sent back like they are on TV).

Now that your tastebuds have been awakened, it’s time to explore this menu’s delights. Seared foie gras, served with stewed cherries, Scottish shortbread and candied marcona almonds, is a great appetizer, as is lobster risotto (a dish the show’s fans are well acquainted with, here made with butter-poached lobster tail, truffle risotto and crispy onions).
Odds are most first-timers to this establishment will want to try the beef Wellington. And who could blame them? It’s the very essence of both Ramsay and his home country, a large, medium-rare cut of delectable beef surrounded by a puff pastry shell and served with potato purée, glazed root vegetables and a red wine demiglace. If you want to go a bit more steak-forward, get the 8-ounce filet mignon from Santa Carota Beef, served with bearnaise sauce. More in the mood for fowl? No problem— the Jidori chicken scallopini more than satisfies, served with roasted pee wee potatoes, artichokes, lacinato kale and truffle chicken jus. We always recommend saving room for dessert, but nowhere is it more necessary than here, where desserts are practically their own food group. Ramsay’s sticky toffee pudding—for many the best dessert on the Strip, which is to say the world—is beyond decadent, served with dulce de leche ice cream. Coconut 3-Ways features a tasty treat in sorbet, passion fruit caramel and coconut cake. Smoke On the Blvd.

Imagine Dragons returns to Las Vegas in the wake of its 2018 hit “Thunder” becoming its fourth song to achieve diamond status sales and streams (as in platinum times 10).
Imagine Dragons returns to Vegas on the latest leg of its Mercury World Tour
It’s the latest career highlight for the ever-ascending quartet that played every Vegas venue it could in its formative years. That grew a fan base that now fills venues such as Allegiant Stadium (the band is supported by Macklemore and Kings Elliot on this leg of the Mercury World Tour) in sing er Dan Reynolds’ hometown .
It’s easy to forget Reynolds is afflicted with a debilitating spinal condition when seeing him in concert with guitarist Wayne Sermon, bassist Ben McKee and drummer Daniel Platzman. “Every day is a battle,” he said by phone during a stop between two concerts in New Jersey. “My quest for health … it’s not even health. Not to be in pain. Every day that I’m not in pain is a blessing, for sure.”
By Matt Kelemen
For Reynolds, being able to perform live is a blessing, precious time when connecting with audiences and losing himself in singing anesthetizes the pain that occurs throughout his body. Being in the creative zone has similar benefits, whether he’s creating music or honing skills in his nonmusical discipline, computer coding. Game development may be in his future, but Reynolds lives very much in the present. Imagine Dragons’ most recent recording project, Mercu ry–Acts 1 & 2, was produced by Rick Rubin. Rubin understood Imagine Dragons’ music was “genreless,” having recorded acts from across the spectrum of ’90s musical styles that influenced the bands’ sound. “Rick certainly … he brought so many unknowns to the table,” Reynolds said. “He also is the first person who sat me down and to make me go over every lyric ...with him, which was really painful for me. I’ve never had to do that before with any producer. He’d be like, ‘What does that mean? Why that?’ And sometimes he’d say, ‘That feels cringey,’ or ‘I don’t like that. Is there a different way you can say it?’ Hard conversations. And it’s Rick Rubin, too, so it’s like extra painful.”
