Though it shares a name, at least in part, with another famous comics convention that happens in San Diego every year, you shouldn’t go to Amazing Las Vegas Comic Con expecting to see DC’s grand plan to reboot its cinematic universe or great packs of twerking cosplay She-Hulks. What you will see are the creators of comic books and animated series, and lots of them. Among those scheduled to appear are Garth Ennis, creator of The Boys and Preacher; Jim Starlin, the father of Thanos and the Infinity Gauntlet; Pokemon and Sailor Moon voice actor Veronica Taylor; “writer of stuff” Peter David, whose funny and inventive work on The Incredible Hulk, Supergirl, X-Factor and others redefined the characters; and former Marvel editor-in-chief Roy Thomas, who had a hand in creating the characters of Wolverine, Ghost Rider, Luke Cage, Vision, Carol Danvers and too many more to name. You should go if you’ve enjoyed any part of the Marvel or DC superhero universes—and you should buy lots and lots of their stuff, because most of them don’t get any residuals from the movies or TV shows. SACRED is its 40th anniversary this year, and its adopted secondary home of Las Vegas gets to host the festivities. Phoenix act Sacred Reich, a band that has stayed loyal to the thrash sound upon which Metal Blade was founded, kicks o the near month-long bash with an intimate show at the Space. Sacred Reich released its first album, Ignorance, on Metal Blade in 1987 and has remained a favorite of label founder Brian Slagel, whose passion for heavy music has never wavered.

Slagel famously played a role in founding Metallica when he o ered close friend and young drummer Lars Ulrich a spot on the first Metal Blade release, the Metal Massacre compilation tape in 1981. Slagel went on to help launch the careers of several other metal A-listers like Slayer, Cannibal Corpse and GWAR through Metal Blade.

We won’t pretend this Louisville hitmaker hasn’t ruffled a few feathers lately. Yes, his sophomore album was coolly received by Pitchfork, inspiring the headline “Jack Harlow’s new album is just terrible.” Yes, he released that song about Dua Lipa that literally no one asked for. And yes, he had no idea Brandy and Ray J were siblings, let alone that she sang the song “Angel in Disguise”—one of her most popular. Yet Harlow continues expanding his fan base. He’s the hunky, wholesome himbo from Kentucky, suave in the studio and palpably nervous in-person around beautiful rappers like Saweetie. He’s the emcee who brought Fergie back into the limelight, sampling her 2007 pop hit “Glamorous” on his hit single “First Class” and soaring it back up the charts. He’s the guy who caught a fan’s phone one-handed from a high balcony while partying with Drake and then snapped a selfie. And we can forgive the fumblings of a rapper this likable. If you miss him at LIB, catch him in the club. 10 p.m., $30-$50, Zouk Nightclub, zoukgrouplv.com. –Amber Sampson.

The new addition is the yachtrock residency by The Docksiders.

Damian Costa (Wade Vandervort/Staff)

as Vegas native Damian Costa wrapped up his run as vice president of entertainment oper ations at Caesars Entertainment after help ing launch new residency shows by Usher and D o nny Osmond during the pandemic. But there was no downtime; he immediately began setting up a dif ferent kind of project, the Southern Nevada Sports Hall o f Fame at the new Dollar Loan Center in Green Valley, then focused on launching magic shows from Farrell Dillon and Lioz at Bally’s on the Strip.

Now that you have a new foot hold at a couple different venues, what’s next for Pompey Entertainment? This company services the entertainment market as opportunities arise. I’m giving a lot of free [advice] right now, which is great. I’m in a good place because I wanted to produce a few shows, run a few venues and manage a few artists. We will announce more venues like this as they come to be, but I think Vegas needs more of what you’re seeing here at the Duomo. I don’t know that you’ve actually walked through an arcade, a bar, a café, an art exhibit and a music hall, a place where you think, “I can actually lose myself here for a little bit.” I want to focus on a customer ex perience and a journey through a space that doesn’t need to be Instagramma ble. How about music, and the bar and food, the stuff we all know and loved for decades? That’s my style.

to take risks; you have to help things evolve from the venue and management side, because the artists are evolving and the guests are evolving in how they want to consume entertainment. But not everyone is comfortable in that space, and it’s not always the most comfortable space to be in.

During your time at Caesars Entertainment, you and the entertainment team didn’t just open big shows and residencies, you also maintained smaller showrooms and developed other options that carried a bit of risk. Is Vegas entertainment still taking chances? There have always been people who were pushing it. You have

L

This year, his new company, Pompey Entertain ment, has renovated a prominent space at the Rio int o a new one-stop-shop known as the Duomo. The 286-seat venue opened over the summer with the return of the long-running tribute production Raid ing the Rock Vault, and this month Pompey kicked o ff ano ther musical residency by touring yacht rock group The Docksiders. The Weekly caught up with Costa on all things entertainment.

BY BROCK RADKE

Why is this show and this music a good fit in Las Vegas right now? My sons are 18 and 22 … and when we [hang out] and get in the pool, what do they put on? Yacht rock. They’re absolutely into it. I think this music sets an emotion people need right now, that everything is OK. … And I think The Docksiders will find a great audience here, because when you’re on vacation, why not?

Does the constant expansion of big shows—now including huge sports events—push out the smaller venues and entertainment options, or does it create new opportunities? The big stuff is always going to get bigger. The head lining spot in Las Vegas just keeps getting bigger. But the opportunity to open a show in Las Vegas has always remained exactly what it is, and I just think we need to make sure we don’t forget those opportunities need to remain. That’s what the audience is always going to want. The way people used to actually sit and have a steak dinner at a show, that’s gone … or did it just change? Maybe you do the same thing but you don’t sit in the same space for three hours. For us, this is our home, so we’re thinking about how to do things right to make sure these things are sustained.

What distinguishes this new venue, the Duomo? I think we have good foot traffic in the Masquerade Village and near the Rio parking garage, so we want to offer those guests any amenities they could want as they’re passing by. You’re getting the nostalgia of the arcade, there’s a big bar and a great café location with a delivery window at the end. It’s just a neat place to hang out and get some free wi-fi or a pizza or a mar garita. [And] the audience reception is great—they love the room and the bar. We think there’s a place in the [Las Vegas entertainment] market to do things a little differently and have some fun and have something for everyone.

But the walls of Fremont, freshly painted with murals for LIB’s rst year and for every festival since, remain vibrant and alive. It’s tough to overstate how di erent Fremont East looked and felt before the likes of Criola, D-Face, Bicicleta Sem Freio, Keya Tama and Shepard Fairey covered Downtown’s giant, featureless walls with their joyous and colorful art. It’s a tradition that continues today, as a set of new murals, co-curated once again by the JustKids creative house and several talented locals, replaces the old.

The Life Is Beautiful festival has transformed Las Vegas. Full stop. The continuing in uence of the “music, culinary, art and learning festival” founded by entrepreneur and music fan Rehan Choudhry in October 2013 can be easily measured, in some cases even with the naked eye.

Nearly a decade in, Life Is Beautiful has made an onculturalindelibleimpactLasVegas

complex contained galleries and a co eehouse; today, it’s an upscale burger bar. The Tony Hsieh-backed Downtown Project gamely attempted to introduce an educational element to Fremont with a theater/newsstand and a “Learning Village”; today the former is a nightclub, the latter an empty lot. And the festival itself, in its early running, contained elements that are now somewhat diminished—most notably its “learning” element, which has been largely replaced with comedy.

Life Is Beautiful’s commitment to urban

The most immediate proof is Downtown, on the streets and alleys that comprise the festival footprint. In October 2013, the Fremont East Entertainment District was still only partially formed, with a few indicators of the junior Bourbon Street it would someday become. But there were plenty of outliers, too. The ground oor of Michael and Jennifer Cornthwaite’s Emergency Arts

“I think [LIB’s mural program] has given …. not permission [per se], but con dence, or validation, to large corporations. They could see that mural art could work for them,” he says. “In a way, it was kind of a market test to see if mural art was something people liked. And they do.”

art has inspired developers and property owners across the Valley to reconsider public art, says proli c Vegas muralist Jerry Misko. He has recently painted murals on brand new buildings in Paradise, in North Las Vegas and on the west side—and without LIB’s example, he says, they might not have been commissioned.

The festival has also encouraged Vegas’ appetite for, well, food. A robust culinary program has been part of LIB from the beginning, bringing the Valley’s biggest kitchen stars, along with notable visiting chefs, out of their restaurants and food trucks to give festival crowds a taste of something great. For locals, it’s a way to try out restaurants they haven’t yet visited; for visitors, it’s proof that Vegas’ culinary scene has evolved and expanded

far beyond the Strip.

LAS VEGAS WEEKLY 21 I9.15.22

September 16-18. 2 p.m.-1 a.m., $180/day, $380/fest. Downtown Las lifeisbeautiful.com.Vegas,

And it probably goes without saying that Life Is Beautiful has given a big boost to Vegas’ touring music scene. (It has also boosted our local music scene; local bands have been a part of LIB from year one.) Vegas hosted numerous music festivals before LIB, some of those have vanished (we hardly knew ye, Vegoose) while others have continued and become in uential events in themselves (Punk Rock Bowling and Electric Daisy Carnival come readily to mind). But LIB has proven time and

Chef Gina Marinelli, executive partner at beloved Summerlin trattoria La Strega, has cooked for several past LIBs and is doing it again this year, for the same reason artists paint those murals—so that even more people can experience something good.

(Wade Vandervort/Sta )

Local concert promoter Patrick “Pulsar” Trout has been a frequent LIB xture, both in his professional capacity (one of the bands he works with, Decaying Tigers, plays the Rising Stars stage on September 17), and as a fan (“Janelle Monáe’s set [in 2013] completely blew me the f*ck away,” he says). To his mind, LIB has helped to change the game in Vegas— not just for clubs and concertgoers, but for other festivals, too.

“There’s a residual e ect when you discover an act at a festival, and then, several months or a year down the line that act comes back to your town but in an intimate setting,” he says. “It makes it easier [than] trying to cold sell someone on the idea of seeing a band that you would probably sell out a room in LA or PerhapsPhoenix.”thebiggest impact Life Is Beautiful has made might be the least obvious—providing an overture to Las Vegas’ autumn months, when the weather cools enough to allow for a veritable ood of cultural events: concerts, fairs, food and drink festivals, parades. After LIB weekend, the city opens like a book, and you nd yourself outside enjoying events you couldn’t have imagined a month before in the summer heat. Some of these cultural events might feel like LIB weekend— and others, perhaps, are happening only because some folks once fatefully decided to throw a big party in the heart of Las Vegas.

FOOTPRINT

“[LIB] is one of the festivals in the last decade, along with Punk Rock Bowling and Psycho Las Vegas, where the focus seems to be on making it a destination event,” he says. “So, while you might be able to see some of the acts that are on the bill at Life Is Beautiful at Brooklyn Bowl or the Cosmo[politan], being able to see all those acts at that level—in one setting—is great.

“Growing up I went to music festivals all the time, and I would eat, like, hot dogs,” she says, laughing. “It’s really cool having this platform, where attendees can enjoy what these really talented chefs can do.”

BIG BOI (Sunday, 6:35 p.m., Down town Stage) He’s one-half of OutKast, among the all-time greatest American hip-hop acts. But he’s also a certifiable star in his own right, bringing his fresh, clean flow to everything from his own solo records to Big Sleepover, last December’s collabora tion with Atlanta funkster Sleepy Brown.

GORILLAZ (Saturday, 11:10 p.m., Downtown Stage) Nearly a quarter century ago, Blur frontman Damon Albarn and visual artist Jamie Hewlett rethought the way music is delivered and consumed, creating fictional band members to star in music videos, in terviews, comic strips and short cartoons. Gorillaz remains a unique force today, with seven studio albums to its credit and an eighth, Cracker Island, scheduled to drop in Feb ruary, featuring collabo rations with Stevie Nicks, Thundercat, Bad Bunny and others.

CALVIN HARRIS (Sunday 11:35 p.m., Downtown Stage) The Scottish DJ/producer has soundtracked some of the biggest songs of our sum mers, including “I Need Your Love” (featuring Ellie Goulding), “This Is What You Came For” (featuring Rihanna) and, well, “Sum mer” itself. His current style is slickly displayed on August’s Funk Wav Bounc es Vol. 2, and though it’s always cool to catch him in a club, this big-stage performance feels like the right way to cap off the weekend. CAGE THE ELEPHANT (Friday, 9:20 p.m., Downtown Stage) Rock’s sway isn’t what it once was, but this Kentucky-born band reigns among the biggest guitar bands of its era. Cage’s platinum-selling 2009 debut LP included millennial anthem “Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked,” 2011 follow-up Thank You, Happy Birthday reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and the three albums since have continued to sell and stream in big numbers.

BEACH HOUSE (Sunday, 10:35 p.m., Bacardi Stage) Eight albums into their career, Baltimore’s Victoria Leg rand and Alex Scally have become synonymous with dream pop, layering guitar reverb, haunting organ and Legrand’s ethereal vocals to gorgeous effect. Disco-funk collective Jungle talks Gorillaz inspiration, adding a human touch to electronic music and more BY AMBER SAMPSON

You’ve cited Gorillaz as an past inspiration for Jungle. How so? The way that they have created the whole concept behind Gorillaz is inspiring as a whole piece of art. They took that concept and followed through with it. It’s quite rare for artists these days to have such singular visions and to pull them off for such an extended period of time. The whole idea of these characters, this other world ... it’s a lens into a different universe. And the space that that music inhabits within that world is really inspiring and something we’ve always tried to create with Jungle.

When did you last dance to your own

You guys played Life Is Beautiful 2018. Have you spent much more time in Las Vegas? We also played at the Hard Rock, supporting Alt-J in between our first two ever Coachella weekends back in 2015 … and we DJed there at one of the Grammy after-parties in April. I play golf there as well, so I feel like I know it quite well.

The London electronic duo—McFarland and Josh Lloyd-Watson—have been making music together since they were childhood friends. In 2013, they formed Jungle, a disco-funk collective that works with art ists of all types. And the pair’s artistic ambitions go beyond music, with Lloyd-Watson co-directing Jungle’s riveting, elaborately choreographed single-shot music videos. ¶ We caught up with McFarland ahead of Life Is Beautiful to discuss why Jungle performs with a full band, his Gorillaz admiration and more.

It feels impossible to sit still while listening to Jungle. If you’re not bouncing already, your body will surely spring to life when the chorus hits. ¶ “Ultimately, it’s music that inherently feels good,” Tom McFarland tells the Weekly during a recent Zoom video call. “Sometimes you need that. People just need to feel good.”

We’ve always tried to create something that is other. It’s not us. Like, I can look in on it. I can put myself out of it, but I can also open the door and step in. That’s because it’s not about who we are as people. It’s about the music. It’s about the

It turns something inherently electronic into something else. You add humanity, you add a human element into that, and it’s chaos really, because everything that’s computerized is order ly. Everything that’s human is chaotic. Having individuals mix individual thought and individual process with what we’ve created using machines is a fascinating combination to us and just pumps harder onstage. And we enjoy having people around us doing it. I don’t think we’d enjoy it as much if it was just us two, because there’s not as much energy. There’s not as much life. There’s not as much vibrancy. It pops harder.

Jungle released its latest album, Loving in Stereo, in August of last year. What’s next? It just depends on what sounds we’re digging, or if we want to be more experimental, if we want to make more pop songs, or who knows. I think we really want to collaborate with more people on [the next] record.

You and Josh perform with a seven-piece band, which surely adds costs and compli cates logistics. Why do it? Because it’s what we would want to see. Even with all of this electronic music we grew up loving, there was nothing more thrilling than when you actually saw it and it wasn’t just two guys with their decks. When we saw Cari bou for the first time and it was a band, it was like “Oh sh*t man, they’re actually f*cking doing this.”

videos. It’’s about the live show. The individual aspects of Tom or Josh don’t work within the framework of what we’re trying to create.

Dancers are a key part of the Jungle-verse, featuring prominently in your music videos. What do they bring to the equation for you? We enjoy working with people who are at the ab solute top of their game, because what they create and what they interpret through your music is something often incredibly magical and quite moving. It’s amazing seeing the dancers’ faces when they’re performing for the videos—it’s like an energy that you sort of see in yourself. ... It’s that energy when I’m making new music.

Home prices in Southern Nevada retreated for a third consecutive month in August—to a median price of $450,000, down about 3% from July but up 11% from August 2021— according to a report released September 7 by the Las Vegas Realtors trade group.

STUFF YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

As soon as the U.S. Department of the Interior last month announced that Nevada would lose 8% of its water allotment from the Colorado River next year amid the continuing drought, officials with the Southern Nevada Wa ter Authority began fielding questions from concerned residents.

Host Jon Castagnino opens the three-minute video posted on Twit ter and other social media channels with screen grabs of complaints. They are: “Stop the building. Stop the golf course. Stop the resorts; we don’t have theThewater.”spot proceeds to dispel those claims, starting with the notion that California is stealing Nevada’s wa ter supply. Castagnino explains that Lake Mead is less than 30% full from 20 years of overdrawing the Colorado River during the drought, but stresses that California—like Nevada—is using what’s legally allocated.

NSC DELAYS VOTE ON NAME

The authority last week, in an ongo ing video series to bring educational awareness for conservation, addressed those concerns. It’s one of about 12 videos it has done in recent years, stressing that the water supply here— especially with continued conserva tion—is secure.

Mack said the videos are helpful to educate the community so residents are more prepared to conserve water and have a higher awareness. Ultimate ly, he said, that translates into behav ior—such as changing the watering schedule for sprinklers to align with SNWA guidelines.

The effect of Nevada’s reductions will be mitigated, because Southern Nevada is a leader in conservation and doesn’t use its full annual allocation from Lake Mead. “Residents feel they are doing a lot in the world of conservation,” Mack said. “It’s important for us to let resi dents understand they aren’t the only ones contributing to our success. It’s every sector of our community.”

Bronson Mack, public information officer for the Southern Nevada Water Authority, said much thought goes into the messaging of the videos to “dis pel myths.” The authority also has a monthly Water Smarts Podcast featur ing conservation leaders.

And with those questions came some inaccurate finger-pointing about the water situation—namely that Cali fornia is using our water; same with casinos on the resort corridor.

He stresses, “we are doing less with more, so conservation is critical.”

One myth addressed in the most recent video centers on the usage by casinos, including a picture of the Bellagio outdoor fountain attraction— one of the notable, and free, things to do in Andtown.thegood news is that no water from the Colorado River is used. MOVINGTHE

With rents and the cost of living having climbed since the pandemic, the need for a ordable homes is more urgent than ever. And while it’s good news for funding recipients and the tenants who will eventually move in, Las Vegas and Nevada still have a long way to go.

As of May, the National Low Income Housing Coalition named the Las Vegas metropolitan area as having the “most severe” a ordable housing shortage of the 50 largest metropolitan cities in the country. Nevada was also at the top of the list of states with the worst shortages.

The county and state move forward with funding to address the a ordable housing crisis

BY SHANNON MILLER

lark County o cials have approved nearly $120 million to support the development of a ordable housing in Southern Nevada.

NEEDLEC

The “historic” funding is expected to lead to the construction of about 3,100 a ordable housing units for low-income families and seniors. According to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), “a ordable” means tenants are paying no more than 30% of income toward rent, utilities and other expenses like repairs.

32 LAS VEGAS WEEKLY 9.15.22 HOUSING

County o cials estimate a statewide shortage of 85,000 a ordable housing units for families earning less than 50% of area median income, which is less than $36,200,

WHEN CAN PEOPLE MOVE IN?

according to HUD. Earlier this year, commissioners approved plans to help create 600 apartments for low-income families and seniors.

Nevada HAND, which provides its own property management for about 8,000 residents, serves as an example of what affordable housing solutions can look like when the whole toolbox is used—vouchers, development incentives, local and state funding and community

“Over the last three years, 10% of family residents who left went on to purchase their first home,” he says. “Construction and rehabilitation are essential … But when we see success through our resident services moving people to home ownership or market-rate housing, that frees up the unit for someone else who’s in need.”

At the state level, Gov. Steve Sisolak announced $500 million for affordable housing projects in early 2022. Home Means Nevada, the American Rescue Plan-funded initiative received approval from the state Interim Finance Commit tee in April for a first round of funding at $250Themillion.Nevada Housing Division, the agency in charge of reviewing applications and recommending awardees to the state, is aiming to have a determination by October on which applications will be funded. “The division has engaged an affordable housing accounting firm to review the financial aspects of the applications for new development and preservation,” a spokesperson said in a Thestatement.Southern Nevada Regional Housing Authority (SNRHA) is ready to hear back regarding 20 applications totaling about $300 million submitted to the Home Means Nevada program. The authority manages more than 2,100 public housing units and administers federal programs including Section 8 and project-based vouchers.

“We’reofficials.intheprocess of developing a more structured landlord partnership where we can offer landlords incentives for them to take Section 8 vouchers and things of that nature,” he says, adding that it will take collaboration with local jurisdictions to make that happen.

“We’vesays.been at that number for quite a while,” Jordan says. “Twenty years ago, the region had about 400,000 people. Now, we have about 2.4 million people in the region that we serve, while we’re still getting 12,500 vouchers to administer … We’ve spoken to a number of folks in [Washington,] D.C., about just examin ing that Jordanprocess.”addsthat one of the challenges with housing choice vouchers is making sure landlords will accept them—“an ongoing conversation we’re having with elected

“From a developer’s perspective ... we understand that the need is severe in our community,” says Waldon Swenson, vice president of corporate affairs for Nevada HAND. “We’re doing everything we can to ensure that we’re building responsibly, but also as quickly as possible.”

Currently, it has more than 900 units under construction or rehabilitation, including family and senior housing. On a sliding scale, tenants pay an average of $733 monthly rent, Swenson says.

“We are pursuing long-term solutions to the affordable housing challenges we face in our region to help ensure that more of our residents have a place to call home,” county chairman Jim Gibson said in a statement following the county board’s approval of the funding.

CLOSING THE GAP

An projecttheviewaerialofDecaturCommonsunderconstruction

The federal Low Income Housing Tax Credit, administered by the Nevada Housing Division, is one of the most used and, according to advocates, most important tools for financing develop ment and preservation. (The county’s most recent round of funding was largely gap financing to supplement those tax credits.)

Nevada HAND and advocates agree that greater investment in affordable housing programs is needed to make a meaningful impact on the shortage.

Currently, HUD allocates about 12,500 vouchers on a once-annual basis for Southern Nevada—not enough to meet the need in the region, which has grown exponentially in recent decades, Jordan

It takes about two years on average from the time financing is secured to occupancy, Swenson says. But the time frame can vary, depending on how long it takes to secure other requirements for subsidized housing including zoning and land (which local jurisdictions can facilitate), along with financing.

“Eachpartnerships.ofourcommunities has on-site resident services built into the cost of rent,” Swenson says, adding that those services, like internet and computer labs, are intended to connect residents with resources such as pandemic rental assistance and food banks, to help them attain financial stability.

While the county looks into lasting solutions to the dearth of affordable housing supply—including a Community Land Trust and more money for perma nent supportive housing projects—the 10 developers awarded the $120 million are working on getting shovels in the ground.

“The tools in the affordable housing toolbox—such as the Low Income Hous ing Tax Credits and long-term rental assistance—do work. They’re under-in vested,” Swenson says. “If we can invest in those programs … in an adequate way, we can truly move the needle and start to dramatically close the gap between the need and what we currently have.”

In addition to local and state funding to beef up Southern Nevada’s affordable housing inventory, SNRHA Executive Director Lewis Jordan says, increasing the state’s federal allocation of Section 8, also known as housing choice vouchers, is a priority. Elation will next bring Markus Schulz to the Portal for a marathon event on September 30, and then on November 5, its Extinction event at the Trypto Event Center (formerly Sahara Event Center) on Karen Avenue will find Dutch hardstyle phenom Brennan Heart sharing the bill with DJ Isaac, Geo, Darksiderz and more.

Future plans could involve a New Year’s Eve party at Area15 and a boutique festival under the Elation banner. With a strong foothold in Las Vegas and a sharp focus on their chosen genres, anything seems possible.

riends and progressive dance music fans Christian Jones and Ryan Barth were traveling to Southern California every other weekend to see their favorite trance, techno and house DJs and artists when they realized they weren’t alone. There were others who wanted more sonic variety in the local scene, which is dominated by more mainstream megaclubs inside Las Vegas Strip casino

Together, the pair launched Elation Events in late 2018, booking artists primarily from Eu rope whose sets stretch beyond the party music in the big clubs. Tech-trance DJ Adam Ellis’ three-hour set at the Thunderbird Lounge was one of the company’s first big promotions, and Elation quickly expanded into hardstyle and other techno genres.

Fremont East’s Commonwealth has been a primary party spot for Elation, particularly with the Thursday-night Terminal 51 event that will feature Spanish DJ Coyu on Septem ber 15 and Belgian techno producer Marco Bailey on September 22. The separate lounge space adds a dynamic preand post-show element, but the real advantage is the location. The WSOC has been touring through a dozen cities around North America with more than 500 comics battling for the crown. The front o ce spent the o season stacking the roster with skill players around him, but Carr can’t be careless with the ball as he was in Week 1. Was it simply a bad day, shaking o rust after not playing in the preseason, or a sign of things to come? Carr struggled to adjust in the first year of coach Jon Gruden’s system in 2018 during one of his worst seasons, so it wouldn’t be unprecedented for him to go through similar growing pains under McDaniels. Against the Cardinals’ defense, the ninth-year quarterback should have a golden opportunity to settle down and bounce back.

Thom Blinkinsop, general manager at Red Rock Country Club, said some golfers complain about a reduction in grass, but the majority don’t seem to mind.“We’ve actually been reducing turf since about 2002,” Blinkinsop said. “We use GPS tracking to see where golf carts drive on our courses.
