• Magic—This week marks the arrival of David Blaine to the Resorts World Las Vegas. The magician and endurance artist begins his David Blaine Live limited-time residency, and if it’s anything like his television performances over the decades, it’s sure to be one you’ll be talking about for years to come (“Great Escapism,” p. 10).

Speaking of laughs, Jew Man Group, a new show at Tuscany Suites & Casino, salutes some of the greatest Borscht Belt comics of all time. There’s no illusion to Blaine’s capacity for holding his breath, whether in a water-filled sphere or frozen in a block of ice. It takes superhuman discipline and dedication, a lot of time and training, and sheer will to attempt to break records for holding a lungful of oxygen while being submerged. David Blaine could not escape his destiny as the resident illusionist at Resorts World Las Vegas. The cardician, close-magic maverick and endurance artist has been an A-list practitioner of prestidigitation throughout his adult life, bringing his act to audiences via television and touring. Christopher Cross entered the studio in the summer of 1979, a few months after Billboard magazine replaced the categorical term Easy Listening with Adult Contemporary. The San Antonio singer-songwriter’s eponymous album released in December of that year made him AC’s first new superstar and earned him four GRAMMYs in 1981. This year he’s finally able to bring his 40th anniversary tour to Las Vegas after the lifting of COVID restrictions.

Cross encapsulated what would become known as soft rock, now often reverently referred to as “yacht rock.” Cross would reach No. 1 again with 1981’s “Arthur’s Theme (The Best That You Can Do),” but his debut album would forever embody a moment in time for singer-songwriters as ’70s introspection gave way to ’80s extroversion. –Matt Kelemen

What started out as a band became a stage name for Christopher Geppert after Warner Bros. signed him as a solo artist. His bandmates did play on his No. 1 hit “Sailing,” but session musicians such as guitarist Larry Carlton, backing vocals from the likes of Nicolette Larson and Michael McDonald, and production by Michael Omartian helped create a pop-leaning, Steely Dan feel through much of the album.

some in small snippets or as part of medleys. There’s also a fair amount of humor throughout—Hosking will comment on how good that night’s audience is at singing along, and during a moment when all three men are singing into one microphone, Hosking gets forced to the side so that just two men can sing, and he’s not sure what to do with himself until rejoining his bandmates at the mic.

In 1978, I was obsessed with two movies: Grease and Saturday Night Fever. I went to see Grease three times, and although I was too young to see Fever, I was struck by two things: Its poster, featuring a mythical-looking John Travolta, striking his now-classic disco pose in a white suit; and the soundtrack, particularly the tracks by the Bees Gees—I had simply not heard anything like it before. To this day, that music still captivates me and takes me back.

But that’s only the beginning of the fun on tap. The trio performs nearly 30 songs over the course of 70 minutes, some in their entirety,

ing, David Scott and Michael Clift, respectively (on the night I attended, James Simpson and Matthew Baldoni filled in as Robin and Barry).

They bring back 1978 to brilliant, vivid life, delivering crisp, note-perfect renditions of not only every Fever classic they wrote, either for themselves or other artists—“Stayin’ Alive,” “How Deep Is Your Love,” “Night Fever,” “You Should Be Dancing,” “More Than a Woman,” “If I Can’t Have You” and “Jive Talkin’”—but also the theme to Grease, written by Barry.

In other words, I’m the ideal audience for The Australian Bee Gees Show, a tribute to the legendary trio of The Brothers Gibb—Maurice, Robin and Barry, rendered beautifully by Wayne Hosk-

Best of all, the audience is fully encouraged to dance at “Club Mo,” o to the side of the stage. When the disco starts, the theater is transformed into a nightclub—and people like me are transported right back to 1978. –Ken Miller

After sampling appetizers ranging from tuna tartare (here accompanied by taro chips rather than the usual potato chip, which makes a huge, delicious difference) to Lil’ Brgs (wagyu sliders with “special sauce”), you’re ready to check out the steak selection. Whether you opt for ribeye, dry-aged Delmonico, filet mignon or New York strip, you’ve gotta accompany them with any number of signature butters (I recommend truffle) and sauces. Red wine is sublime, but STK and STK bold sauce are also highly recommended. In addition, mac and cheese makes for a terrific side—there’s traditional, bacon and lobster (or, if you just can’t decide, a mac and cheese trio featuring all Pescatariansthree).

This concept by executive chef Stephen Hopcraft is just aces in all departments.

I’m a huge, huge fan of Old-Fashioneds, so you can imagine my delight to discover that STK offers six different signature versions, each made with different spirits—Va-

Another thing I love about STK: Its menu fits on one page, making selecting so much easier. But lest you think this menu is in any way limiting, think again: This may be a steakhouse, but there’s plenty here for vegetarians, including an intoxicating mushroom and truffle tagliatelle, which doesn’t skimp on the pecorino, braised mushrooms, baby spinach and shaved black truffle.

There is one Cirque du Soleil show that stands out from the rest for fans of fantasy, battlefield glory, makeup design, and special e ects. KÀ brings those elements together with colorful costumes, exciting action and exquisite pageantry to relate an original tale, a heroes’ journey in a mythical Far East. Before the protagonists can return home there is an odyssey to experience, complete with flaming arrows, wall walking, overhead views of combat, underwater scenes and a ship tossed about by a storm at sea as audiences inside KÀ Theater at MGM Grand Vegas remain dry.

It’s fitting that a spectacle on as grand a scale as KÀ would find a home at MGM Grand. It’s like watching live three-dimensional cinema that places the audience amid martial artists who leap and lunge without the aid of camerawork and editing.

Now an entertainment institution on the south end of the Strip, KÀ continues to create its own legacy since launching under the direction of creator Robert Lepage nearly 18 years ago. He’s refined the production in the years since the curtain opened for the first time in the massive theater, taking the knowledge that came with the learning curve for the tech and tweaking it for maximum e ectiveness. The results of his dedication to perfection are worth seeing—and revisiting.

As their characters fight for their lives, cast members rely on coordination, expertise and focus to ensure fictional defeated enemies don’t become real-life casualties while they navigate a massive rotating stage.

Defying gravity is a recurring element in most Cirque shows, with KÀ reaching a creative high thanks in large part to hydraulics that enable vertical choreography for the epic battle scenes. The Archer’s Daughter glides above the ground like a graceful arrow released from a bow. Aerialists take the form of puppets who dance an airborne duet, while actual puppetry is involved in the animation of a sea arachnid that gets a solo turn in the spotlight. There’s even a shadow puppet segment that will motivate some audience members to re-create the Cirque du Soleil techniques at home. Less easily duplicated are the facial creations of makeup designer Nathalie Gagné, whose inspired blend of kabuki theater

It’s a show that whisks audiences away to a world where anything goes—and we do mean anything. Yes, the talents on display here mesmerize like few others on the Strip, but to say it’s adults-only is putting it lightly. When it comes to the comedy, both spoken and physical, you’re going to need to be open. You have to be willing to let your guard down and let your freak flag fly, because eventually the whole audience will be waving theirs proudly.

Absinthe at Caesars Palace is a show where the comedy doesn’t push the envelope; it shreds it to bits.

It’s a show that makes it OK to be naughty, and your hosts The Gazillionaire and his assistant Wanda Widdles are both the creators and ambassadors of that naughtiness. And from that impropriety comes those big laughs—the comedy here is crass and all sass; it’s also super-sexual, and the audience

is safe, and no one can keep a straight face. There’s even opportunity for couples to get up onstage and compete in a lap-dance competition for free cocktails. My goals have evolved over time. At first, I just wanted the opportunity to perform and improve my magic. I was very far from imagining Vegas at that time. Then gradually I said to myself, one day, I would perform in Vegas. If someone had told me (I would achieve that goal) when I started the magic, I wouldn’t have believed it. And yet, it’s true.

Léa Kyle has amazed audiences on stage and screen. Winning multiple magic competitions, receiving Heidi Klum’s Golden Buzzer on America’s Got Talent, and earning the FU Trophy on Penn & Teller: Fool Us, Kyle has become known as one of the best quick-change acts in the game. Now, she’s appearing on the America’s Got Talent Las Vegas Live stage.

Again, both! Although, very often, I first have a magic e ect in mind and then I create a dress design based on this magic e ect. Sometimes a dress design gives me an idea of a magic e ect. I am inspired by everything from painting to fashion shows to nature, etc.

I will say yes and no. When participating in a TV show, the work of an act is completely di erent than for a live act. … Although, TV shaped my performance because my magic e ects are linked faster; there is less dead time than before. But on the other hand, I’ve always wanted to present acts that look like me. I like working on novelty, creativity, and freshness. So, TV show or live, it is essential for me to find these three things.

I admit that I work (on) my magic a lot at home, and that’s what amuses me! What I like to do in Vegas is see shows; those of Cirque du Soleil are incredible, and there are many magic shows that are worth seeing. The best shows I’ve seen are in Vegas. Also,

My boyfriend Florian Sainvet. He is a magician for Mad Apple and he is the one who made me discover magic. We work together on the creation, staging and preparation of my acts. He specializes in sleight-of-hand magic, and although very di erent from the quick change, his vision of magic inspired and influenced me a lot in the creation of new quick changes.

Jabbawockeez Theater is completely packed one recent evening for the revised and retooled Timeless, Jabbawockeez’s third Las Vegas production. The timing of Timeless’ original opening coincided with the beginning of lockdowns, disrupting momentum. Disruptions of momentum are bad for dancing, as well as dance crews eager to bring their newest concepts in choreogra phy to hard-won fan bases.

Timeless is their most up-close-and-personal show yet. Next-level LED technology provides crystal-clear illuminated back

drops, and lasers are used in an innovative way that suggests Jabbawockeez possess magical powers along with supreme danceOneskills.left-field addition made to Time less is a third-quarter karaoke segment that requires audience participation and emphasizes the comedy skills inherent to the most renown urban dance crew in the world. The Jabbawockeez have come a long way in two decades of existence, driven by the excitement of blazing new frontiers for b-boys and creating a blueprint for how to succeed. They even have a new Timeless NFT ticket that gives fans special access as well as a collectible digital memento.

Ultimately, the show is all about purposeful, expressive movement that entertains as well as inspires. Watch the kids wearing white masks exiting the theater, confidently mimicking dance moves they just saw, and the cultural significance of Jabbawockeez is made more apparent than any words can express.

Jabbawockeez continue to evolve with ‘Timeless’

“We’ve been through so many revamps of Timeless just because of COVID,” says cast member Rynan “Kid Rainen” Paguio. “It’s crazy that a show we opened right before COVID went to MGM Grand Garden Arena after so many months, and we had all these protocols. We had to revamp the show for that stage and that audience, and then getting back to the theater and having to change to what we had before was just a crazySocialsituation.”distancing extended to stage choreography, so the entire show had to be blocked to create distance among cast members. Contact wasn’t allowed so tandem moves had to be cut or reimagined. Frustrating as it was, it provided leeway

to hone the “Regional” segment, which takes the audience on a whirlwind tour of hip-hop’s major scenes, and to mix Busta Rhymes into a moody segment set to Billie EilishThebeats.enthusiasm for being back in action shows in the effervescence emanating from the stage as Jabbawockeez go back in time to visit dance cultures past, trading track suits for zoot suits at one point. The emotion they convey through body movement alone, enhanced by their iconic expressionless masks and combined with apparently effortless precision, never ceases to amaze.

The capacity crowd on hand for a 7 p.m. performance is populated with members of that fan base whose enthusiasm for Jabbawockeez has not been disrupted. If they are seeing Timeless for the second time, it may seem like an entirely new show. Timeless debuted at Jabbawockeez Theater shortly before the pandemic lockdowns, reopened in a much larger venue to accommodate social distancing, then moved back after protocols were lifted.
