We’ve Got a New Look!

Las Vegas is a city that’s always reinventing itself, putting a fresh spin on established concepts and keeping itself vibrant and essential in the process. Las Vegas Magazine is no di˜ erent. We’ve spent decades creating a weekly magazine for our tourist population that presents all your entertainment options in a compelling, visually arresting way. And this week’s issue marks the launch of our latest redesign, one that we’re sure will capture your imagination and spark ideas just as our previous iteration did.

It’s an extremely exciting week to be presenting our new look. A brand-new, award-winning musical makes its debut in Las Vegas this month, Bat Out of Hell—The Musical, at Paris (“Rock Romance,” p. 32). If you’re a fan of Meat Loaf’s best-selling 1977 album, you are going to love this show. In addition, Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder hits Dolby Live at Park MGM with the Earthlings in what is sure to be a memorable evening (“Fruitful Collaborations,” p. 34).

We’ve also got a killer walk-through of one of Las Vegas’ most exciting attractions, AREA15, which is always expanding its o˜ erings for mind, body and soul (“It's Feeding Time,” p. 36 ). Speaking of attractions, you’ll also want to check out Illuminarium, which takes you to the far reaches of space or on a safari (“All-In-One Fun,” p. 16 ).

That’s just the beginning of the fun you’ll fi nd in the pages within. From restaurants like Bar Zazu at Resorts World (“Plate Plans,” p. 20) and Stack at The Mirage (“Wall-to-Wall Excellence,” p. 28) and long-running shows like Fantasy at Luxor (“Ageless Appeal,” p. 18) to lounges like Barbershop Cuts & Cocktails at The Cosmopolitan (“Primp, Drink and Party,” p. 26 ), Las Vegas has it all—and it’s all covered in Las Vegas Magazine Here’s looking at you—and you looking at us!

A Full ‘Revival’

There’s no other singer in Las Vegas quite like Skye Dee Miles. The Missouri native with the powerful, soulful voice and a style all her own has thrilled audiences through the years in production shows like Menopause the Musical and fronting live bands at a plethora of casino lounges, including the Bourbon and Blues bash at the Shag Room at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas. But her latest project is the most ambitious yet, the full-scale Midnight Skye: The Revival at the legendary Ghostbar at the top of Palms. It’s a club known for unparalleled views, and Miles is giving guests even more to look at and soak in. As she explained to editor at large Brock Radke, connecting with an audience is everything to her.

What was it like to put this new show together in a short period of time for Ghostbar?

Even though I had this vision and the ideas and concepts had been in my head, or written down, or performed in other places, we were still creating a stage in a (nightclub space) that doesn’t have a traditional stage, making a dressing room in a place with no dressing room. But we made it happen. It’s a great opportunity and really piqued my interest to come back and do something that was more mine, and

not just me doing something at Usher’s show (backstage experience at Caesars Palace) or at Holly Madison’s show (at Planet Hollywood). It’s my project.

What do you love about this intimate venue?

It feels like your living room, if you had a multimillion-dollar living room. It’s harder for me to be in venues where I can’t really touch people. The pandemic forced us not to touch and engage, and now we’re back and able to do it again. And people do want to be involved, they want you to remember their name, to trigger a memory. That’s what enter tainment is for.

Midnight Skye is really a journey, taking us through different experiences throughout the night. There are different levels. For the pre show, there’s a harp player and a cello player, and that’s not what you expect at a nightclub. And then we bring in the showgirls, and there are not many showgirls left in this city. And then the real show starts, and I think it’s beyond immersive and everybody is included. Think of it as a house party.

How do you create those connections with the audience?

Photo by Christopher DeVargas Skye Dee Miles chats about her new Ghostbar show
12 | 10.2.22 Las Vegas Magazine Spotlight

That’s what it’s about, why it’s a revival. Did we make you laugh? Did we make you cry? Did we make you feel? Did we make you dance? Did we make you remember? If you’re not getting one of those (reactions), you’re just a robot onstage. One line we are using is, “Putting the life back into nightlife.” It is still a club, but … people are coming in just to feel it again, to buy someone else a drink and listen to the music, and it’s somewhere between a party, a production show and a lounge act. It’s all in one, on a nontraditional stage.

Palms is a different venue for you because it attracts a lot of local Las Vegans. What’s that experience like for you?

That’s one of the reasons I was enticed to come over, the commitment from the Palms to providing live entertainment and creating a place where locals want to go and feel included. I’m seeing a lot of people I haven’t seen in a while.

So I’m excited about being part of the Palms family and having the opportunity to be me, because they know what they got when they signed me. Every component of this show is something I’ve already done, but in a different format. You get to see the beauty of Vegas showgirls, live band members, dancers, costumes, comedy, and we do have a DJ and party music, we make time for that. And some people, and some locals, they never go to a production show. But when you’re in a nightclub and something special happens, that’s really cool.

Q&A

Midday Morsels

From breakfast to brunch and lunch, you’re going to fi nd a lot to appreciate at Sadelle’s Cafe, an import from New York City that has been a huge hit ever since arriving here in 2019.

The restaurant itself, just through the Conservatory and Botanical Garden, is inviting—lots of Ti ffany blue highlights, warm, inviting booths and impeccably appointed tables. The waitstaff is attentive and always willing to help you out with any questions. You’ll feel instantly welcome here, especially when you start to sip on classic cocktails like Bellinis, mimosas and Bloody Marys.

Breakfast options all stress high-quality ingredients and fresh flavors. You’ll defi nitely want to start your experience here with a bagel (your choice between plain, sesame, everything and cinnamon raisin), as Sadelle’s is famous for them—they are produced in-house under the direction of executive sous chef Minesh Mehta. They’re incredibly light and flu ff y, a result of the amount of time spent proofi ng the dough. In addition to cream cheese, be sure to get all the accoutrements, from salmon and cucumbers to tomatoes and capers. Soooo good!

One of Sadelle’s biggest sellers is the avocado toast, and for good reason: Avocado is mixed with salt, pepper and lemon juice, on top of which pickled red onions and freshly sliced Fresno peppers and avocado are piled. When you add in sea salt, lemon zest, cilantro and poppy seeds, you have a flavor bomb that you’ll be reluctant to share.

Even something as simple as a grapefruit half gets taken up a notch. This version, called grapefruit cocktail, is given a brûlée top with Sugar in the Raw, caramelized with a blowtorch. For those who love sugar on grapefruit, this is a unique treat.

Be sure to plan a return for brunch or lunch. The real signature here is fried chicken, so delicious with its accompaniment of tru ffle honey, coleslaw and fries. But, as with breakfast, everything on the menu is worth your time.

For an exclusive treat, reserve brunch at the Garden Table (set within the Conservatory and Botanical Garden), which includes two courses and the beverage of your choice. Call 702.693.7317 to reserve. –Ken Miller

Ageless Appeal

Audience for adults-only revue spans the generations

Beauty takes many forms. For some, it’s a smile; for others, it’s a warm, a ffable personality; for others, it’s a sense of humor; and for others, it’s a body that won’t quit. Fantasy, one of the Las Vegas Strip’s longest-running adult revues, combines all these elements into one irresistible, timeless package.

Choreographed by show creator Anita Mann and featuring a cast of lovely, lithe performers, Fantasy, about to celebrate its 23rd anniversary, features all the elements of a must-see show:

• More than a dozen dynamite routines that range from seductive (three women romping on a bed or an acrobat twirling around on a silk rope) and playful (a country romp, complete with hats, boots and chaps) to exhilarating (high-energy moves to hard-rocking hits). In each case, the dancers eventually doff heir tops, giving this show its adults-only aspect, and Fantasy ’s appeal has no age limit beyond that. Look throughout the crowd at any show and you’ll see couples from the ages of 18 to 90, all having the time of their lives.

• The vocal talents of Lorena Peril, who’s as adept at getting the

audience loosened up with her bubbly personality and good-natured ribbing as she is as belting out rousing renditions of “Roxanne” and “Proud Mary.”

• Comedy relief, courtesy of Shayma Tash (who alternates with comedy magician Murray Sawchuck). If you’re near the front row, get ready for Tash to have a little fun at your expense; at a performance I attended, she “borrowed” someone’s purse and, impersonating a Home Shopping Network spokesperson hawking her wares, had a field day displaying its contents.

The show’s dance captain, Yesi Burgess, has been with the production since 2008, and credits the show’s longevity to Mann’s vision. “She defi nitely understands us,” Burgess told Las Vegas Magazine earlier this year. “She’s an incredible, remarkable woman. She paved the way. She was the fi rst woman to direct cameras on TV and be the boss lady. (She worked on) Solid Gold. I look up to her, and I’m lucky to be working so close to her now because she’s such a mentor to me. I learned a lot from her.” –Ken Miller

Swing into tapas bar at Resorts World for artful food

If you’ve got a craving but aren’t sure exactly what will satisfy it, head to Bar Zazu. This tapas establishment combines plush seating, amazing artworks, and a menu featuring a wide variety of flvorful bites to create a perfect beginning, middle or end to your evening (it o ff ers a swanky place for breakfast and lunch, too). Start by feasting your eyes on art pieces hanging from the wall, including whimsical, food-inspired ladies that drift from frame to frame.

Like many other tapas places, order by choosing a variety of small, individual items, from cheeses to bone marrow. At Bar Zazu, you will undoubtedly want to start with a composed cheese board, which you can get in three sizes. El Grande Salumi contains a bit of every cheese variety of the menu, along with salami and marinated olives. And those olives are amazing.

A tapas classic is pan con tomate, done here with toasted Catalan Cristal bread, served with your choice of manchego cheese, ham and boquerones (fresh anchovies), plus preserved Cantabrian anchovies, marinated mussels or squid-stuff ed squid.

There are plenty of other plates, both hot and cold, such as chickpea hummus with pita and veggies, patatas bravas, seafood pasta, roasted beets, bone marrow for two, ham and cheese croquettes, lamb T-bone, and bobo chicken and seafood paella. By the time you make it to the peppadew peppers stuff ed with goat cheese, you are bound to be a little stuff ed yourself! –Nina King

Patty Beck, DWS

Guiding guests on

big

Patty Beck, DWS, has lived many lives professionally. And for the past two years she’s found a new niche as wedding manager for the Golden Nugget.

Before she was helping couples say their “I do,” she worked professionally as a sommelier across the Strip at various restaurants and resorts for more than a decade. Beck’s love of wine went beyond just certification—she’s a level-four sommelier and only one of two people in the whole city who received her Diploma of Wine and Spirits. Before her career as an oenophile, Beck spent many years performing as

a keyboardist and singer in a local band that performed all over the Strip.

But come 2020, “I was looking for a change and I needed a challenge,” Beck says, so she put her wedding-planning skills to the test and found a calling she loves. To date she’s helped plan and oversee nearly 400 weddings at Golden Nugget. Weddings, she says, can take place all over the property, supporting anywhere from 30 to 1,000 people, with the property providing everything from photography and florals to special ceremonies and a curated menu of fine-dining specialties.

“I’m the sole contact point from beginning to end for brides and grooms,” Beck says. “For me, it’s being there that day—the best day of their lives. I get to see their best day and they know me, and they thank me, and I’m part of their family for one day. When you see the panic in a bride’s eyes and you can calm her down and she’s fine, that makes you feel very much like you’re worth standing here on Earth, and there’s a reason you’re here. When it’s done, they always say, ‘The wedding was e ff ortless.’ And I get more hugs than you can even imagine.” –Kiko Miyasato

A completely di fferent world from the shop is revealed—a large, dark, seductive space with classy Prohibition-era décor. A large bar, several sofas and table seating and a stage help set the scene for nights of live music and original craft cocktails.

“It’s a good vibe, it’s a good party,” said Paul Edgar, marketing director. “It’s fun, energetic. It’s an experience for anyone that loves live

music.” You can enjoy live rock ’n’ roll music seven days a week, not to mention a lineup of musical artists that occasionally stop by and hop onstage to join the band. (Past surprise performances have included Machine Gun Kelly, Zac Brown, Anderson.Paak, Bruno Mars and Gavin DeGraw.)

When it comes to cocktails, “The beverage program here is based on modern, classic-era cocktails with original recipes that are focused around bourbon and Scotch,” said lead mixologist Tony Arnone. “I put so much passion and love into the cocktails I create.”

Two of his stand-out creations are the Six String Sling, with a Suntory Toki Japanese whiskey base and a housemade passion fruit and cherry ice pop, and the Moustache Ride with Teeling whiskey, Cherry Heering, vanilla orgeat and Guinness and topped with Black Islay Scotch. “If you’re looking for something di fferent with a nice velvety texture and mouth-feel and elements of malty chocolatiness but also with a dash of smoke, I would highly recommend it,” Arnone said. –Kiko Miyasato

Nosh Exciting décor at Stack leads into a delicious, varied menu

I always talk about the décor in the restaurants I write about, and that’s for a reason. Décor sets the stage for your meal—farmhouse décor gives you visions of fresh produce, while the plush booths of an old-school steakhouse guarantee a more decadent meal. At Stack, you’l l fi nd a different kind of décor: stacked wood walls that curve around the dining area, creating a feel of being in one of the American Southwest’s famous canyons, where limestone walls both show the history surrounding you and protect the creatures inhabiting it.

Those walls create a sense of wonder, wonder which transfers over to the drinks and entrées. Keep it fresh with a cucumber martini, which layers cucumber vodka, white cranberry juice, cucumber purée and a bit of lemon sour, or get adventurous with the Liquid Passion, constructed with passion fruit rum, a tropical liqueur, blood orange purée and fresh lemon. You’ll also fi nd Old-Fashioneds, Manhattans and piña coladas, among others.

Appetizers and starters all keep that mood going. You are fully covered when it comes to seafood. Choices include oysters on the half shell with a mignonette sauce, avail-

able by the half or full dozen; shrimp cocktail and oysters “Rockafellahh” with bacon and spinach, plus yellowtail crudo, crispy calamari and tuna tartare. A meat and cheese board is particularly good, with a selection of jam, and signature dishes include the Hot Rocks, which is literally hot rocks, where you can watch sirloin sizzle. Keep it a little healthy with Stack watermelon gazpacho, a traditional wedge or Caesar salad, or, if you are lucky and it’s still on the menu, grilled peach salad with vanilla mascarpone, pista chios, and watercress. Now, doesn’t that sound healthy— and delicious?

Stack has a ton of options for mains, from steak frites with New York strip, a porterhouse or ribeye “cowboy” steak, all of which can be upgraded with jumbo shrimp scampi, craw fi sh Oscar or a lobster tail (Lobster also fi nds its way into one of the signature items, lobster tacos with lemon, chili and herbs).

Grilled salmon is accented by green chili and a drunken cherry relish. Burgers, chicken, rack of lamb and double-cut bourbon-barrel glazed pork chops may make you consider leaving the steak behind.

Although you might not technically need sides, your meal will be so much happier with one or two on the table. Try the Adult Tater Tots for a twist on the typical fun food—these are full of bacon and brie. Creamed spinach, loaded mac and cheese and Parmesan fries round out these goodies.

Dessert is sometimes a hard sell after having such an expansive meal, but it’s almost always worth it. Although you’l l fi nd that desserts do change out, one that has been on the menu for a long while are the munchkin doughnuts with raspberr y fi lling. Oh, so yum.

You’ll also fi nd that vegan and vegetarian options are available; just let your server know your dietary preferences.

Bat Out of Hell—

The Musical brings iconic hits to the stage

The roots of Bat Out of Hell—The Musical date back decades before its arrival to the Strip, where Travis Cormier’s casting in the starring role was the finl step before the musical could rev its engines in rehearsal.

As Strat, Cormier helps bring Meat Loaf’s mega-selling 1977 album Bat Out of Hell to life onstage at Paris in a production inspired by producer Jim Steinman’s original vision for what the songwriter-producer-playwright described as “Wagnerian rock.”

It’s a role the Canadian performer is fully prepared for. In addition to handling vocals on songs originally interpreted by one of the most powerful rock singers of all time such as “Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad,” “Paradise by the Dashboard Light” and the album’s title track, Cormier is respon-

sible for delivering iconic dialogue spoken by Steinman himself in the introduction to “You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth (Hot Summer Night).” “It is my favorite line to say in the musical,” says Cormier. “It’s such an honor because it’s such a famous, kind of legendary line.”

Cormier proved he had a way with legendary lyrics when he performed a cover of Aerosmith’s “Dream On” on the Canadian version of The Voice in 2016, astounding audience and judges alike when he hit the song’s climactic high notes. Cormier had discovered his parents’ stash of clas-

sic rock CDs as an adolescent, where Bat Out of Hell was shelved alongside Appetite for Destruction

“There was nothing like that before,” says Cormier. “Music that was made for a musical, that tells such a story. The songs are 10-minute songs with such different melodies and emotions.”

Meat Loaf and Steinman met at a Shakespeare festival and were reunited in 1975 when both were cast in a touring musical as replacements for cast members departing for Saturday Night Live. The singer was impressed with Steinman’s songwrit

ing and concept for a musical titled Neverland that evolved into an album project, and the two began working together in earnest. After a long recording journey, navigated in large part by producer Todd Rundgren, Bat Out of Hell became a sleeper hit.

The Manchester Opera House debut of Bat Out of Hell—The Musical in 2017 brought Steinman’s original vision full circle, going on to play London’s West End and touring internationally before coming to Vegas.

Cormier joins a cast that includes Sin City stage veterans Travis Cloer (Jer sey Boys) and Anne Martinez (Baz—A Musical Tour de Force) as the parents of Strat’s romantic interest Raven, played by Vegas native Alize Cruz.

Cormier describes his chemistry with co-star Cruz as “very real and natural,” which he thinks audiences will be looking for. Two people that have been inspiring him in rehearsals can’t be in the audience, as Steinman and Meat Loaf passed away in 2021 and January of this year, respectively.

“The whole time, I keep thinking, ‘If they were sitting in the room right now and they were looking at us, this is the performance I would want to be delivering,’” says Cormier. “I really want to put everything into this.”

Eddie Vedder and the Earthlings touch down at Dolby Live at Park MGM

Eddie Vedder is not leaving Pearl Jam, despite the fun he’s had playing with a group of musicians dubbed the Earthlings. When Vedder and company beam down at Dolby Live at Park MGM it will be on the heels of Pearl Jam’s latest U.S. tour. From Vedder’s point of view, the recording cycle that he experienced with producer Andrew Watt was too fruitful to not manifest as his latest solo album, Earthling, and can only inform future projects with the other band that he’s performed with for more than 30 years.

Pearl Jam’s 30th anniversary coincided with the pandemic, causing a tour in support of 2020 album Gigaton to be delayed and giving Vedder time to develop a relationship with Watt. Watt was born two days before Pearl Jam played its fi rst show (as Mookie Blaylock) in October 1990. He grew up on Pearl Jam’s music and became a musician, raising his profi le as Justin Bieber’s guitarist. He became in demand as a session musician and collaborator by artists such as Post Malone, Camila Cabello and Blink-182 before producing Ozzy Osbourne’s well-received 2020 album Ordinary Man

Vedder, who often speaks in metaphors, characterized his collaboration process with Watt as yielding songs that fell from the trees. “… Then they were ripe, and looked pretty great, tasted pretty great,” he told Apple Music interviewer Zane Lowe in February. He was also working with several musicians that

could be considered Pearl Jam’s extended family. Vedder met drummer Chad Smith when an embryonic Pearl Jam supported the Red Hot Chili Peppers on tour. Guitarist Josh Klinghoffer was a member of that band before joining Pearl Jam as a touring musician.

Both are onboard as Earthlings for the Vegas show, as are Vedder collaborator Glen Hansard and Jane’s Addiction bassist Chris Chaney. Vedder debuted the Earthlings at his annual Ohana Festival last September, where Pearl Jam also played, and scheduled an eight-date, six-city tour in February before Pearl Jam hit the road in May.

The band played most of the songs from Earthling, along with a handful of covers and a Pearl Jam song here and there, at venues such as New York’s Beacon Theatre and Benaroya Hall in Seattle. The album, released Feb. 11, is worth the deep dive.

The opening track, “Invincible,” sounds as if it were inspired by Peter Gabriel’s mid-’80s period. Smith’s pounding beat drives “Power of Right,” which would please any Pearl Jam fan, while “Brother the Cloud” can be interpreted as a tribute to late Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell. “The Dark” and “The Haves” are some of Vedder’s strongest songwriting to date, while “On My Way” is a hymn of closure regarding the relationship with his birth father that inspired the fi rst songs he wrote for Pearl Jam.

This is likely to only be the beginning for the Earthlings, making it unlikely that Vedder will be diverted with another album of ukulele tunes. Watt is infusing his musing, the end of the road is far in the distance for Pearl Jam, and as long as fruit falling from the tree continues to taste great, he’ll continue to share it with the world.
