The New King
Legendary performer is on track to break Elvis Presley’s Vegas record
I was never able to see Elvis Presley when he performed at the International, and so I can’t begin to imagine the energy level from the crowd at just one of his shows. But I have seen Barry Manilow, who performs in the same space as the King did those many decades ago. And I’m here to tell ya: I’ve seen a lot of concerts in a lot of venues, and nothing in my experience matches the electricity generated by a Manilow crowd.
I’d go so far as to say it’s what keeps Manilow going. The man is 79 years old! He has nothing left to prove; he’s earned the right to retire and rest on his many laurels. But yeah, if I was in his shoes and got the reaction he does every time he steps onto a stage, I’d probably be performing into my golden years, too!
Ask any Manilow fan who’s been to countless Manilow performances, and they’ll all say the same thing: Barry is the ultimate showman, a consummate entertainer who leaves everything on the field every single time. He may be pushing 80, but this dude’s stamina is legendary. And his fans are with him every step of the way, waiting for hours sometimes after a show to pose with him for photographs and autographs. We’ve all seen those concerts where entertainers point into the audience as if they spotted someone they know; at a Manilow concert, it’s a pretty good bet Manilow actually does!
And good news: Manilow is guaranteed to still be hard at it into next year, announcing 2023 dates, which, for those Elvis fans out there, will break his Las Vegas concert record! Manilow, in a statement, said, “I am honored and humbled to be performing on the same stage that the King once graced. Setting a new record for concerts at the Westgate Las Vegas International Theatre is a true privilege.”
That means at least one more year of favorites such as “Mandy,” “I Write the Songs,” “Copacabana” … more than I can realistically list in one writeup. Time to update the Las Vegas history books. –Ken Miller

One Hell of a Good Time
Ultra-romantic Paris musical hits all the right notes, courtesy of Meat Loaf classics
Peter Pan meets West Side Story meets Mad Max in Bat Out of Hell , a production featuring the propulsive, emotional songs of Meat Loaf and Jim Steinman (the musical’s title comes from Meat Loaf’s 1977 album of the same title, one of the best-selling records of all time). It wears its heart on its leather-clad sleeve from start to finish, and for fans of this genre of music, it’s hard to not feel at times like you’re at a rock concert.
The “plot” is based in the post-apocalyptic world (we think?) of Obsidian, lorded over by the evil Falco (we think?), whose daughter falls in love with Strat, a member of an outcast group called the Lost, who remain 18 forever (we wish!). Oh, and there’s a lot of motorcycles and classic cars, too, most of which end up getting blown up or destroyed in horrific crashes. It’s a completely over-the-top tableau upon which to layer classics like “Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad,” “Paradise By the Dashboard Light” and “I Would Do Anything for Love (But I Won’t Do That),” sung with absolute conviction by a gorgeous cast.
The staging is compelling, with plenty of design highlights to catch your eye. A large, angular building looms on the right side of the stage, complete with a fully decorated bedroom for scenes featuring Falco’s daughter, Raven (Alize Cruz), with a cameraman following her every action and broadcasting it on a large screen on the left. Just below the screen is a large sewer tunnel through which the Lost come and go. A live band offstage delivers pitch-perfect versions of all the hits (they wave to the audience on the video screen at show’s end).
As a longtime fan of Meat Loaf’s music (and his legendary stage persona), it was truly goosebump-inducing when Strat, in a romantic moment with Raven, inquires, “Would you offer up your throat to the wolf with the red roses?” And judging by the excited whoops and hollers from the rest of the audience at that line’s utterance, I wasn’t the only one.

the Hanky Panky
Fans of television’s perhaps greatest show ever, Breaking Bad, owe a great debt of gratitude to Tommy James and The Shondells. In what may be the best single use of a pop song in television history, “Crystal Blue Persuasion” plays as Walter White’s meth empire grows from the United States to the Czech Republic (White’s unique method of making crystal meth turned it blue). It’s almost as if Tommy James and company might have seen back then this moment far into the future! But the producers of Breaking
Bad are just one in a long line of creatives that have paid tribute to this ’60s band’s songwriting prowess:
“Mony Mony” vaulted back into the public consciousness when Billy Idol did a cover of it in 1981, along with a killer video;
“Crimson and Clover” was a hit for Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, also in 1981 (along with a super-sexy video);
“I Think We’re Alone Now” was made even more iconic in 1987, courtesy of a cover (and again, a great video) by Tiffany.
It all just speaks to the universal appeal the band has had over the decades, culminating in two number one hits, 24 Billboard Top 40 Solid Gold hits and more than 100 million records sold worldwide. And the chart-topping band brings all these hits and much more to the Golden Nugget this week. We figure you won’t need too much persuasion to go. –Ken Miller

The Best of Both Worlds
Chinese and Mexican cuisines share the spotlight
Celebrity chef José Andrés is doing something cool in culinary at his restaurant China Poblano at The Cosmopolitan. “We are one restaurant with two cuisines: Chinese and Mexican, but we’re not a fusion restaurant,” says Eduardo Sanchez, assistant general manager of China Poblano. “We do authentic dishes from each country.” Traditional dishes and ones with an Andrés twist are served side by side, so it’s the best of both cuisines.
Taking it one step further in the cool factor, the eatery also offers a multi-course vegetarian menu. With veggie-style eating being all the rage, China Poblano needs to be on the top of everyone’s mustdine list. The Vegetable Experience alternates between Mexican and Chinese dishes, starting with traditional chips and salsa, both made fresh and in house. Other courses include the perfectly crunchy, sweet-and-spicy la leng mian, a cold-noodle salad, a fresh bite of coconut ceviche, a to-die-for queso fundido with fresh-made corn tortillas, and an impressive, flavor-packed 20-vegetable fried rice. The eight-course experience includes dessert, and the price is unbelievable at only $45 plus tax (there’s a nonvegetarian tasting menu for the same price!).
For nonvegetarians, there’s plenty of Chinese and Mexican
goodness. The hard part is just deciding what to order from the massive menu. Might we suggest trying tacos like braised pork, battered-and-fried seasonal fish or the crispy beef tendon, all served with fresh corn tortillas made inhouse from heirloom corn grown in Oaxaca, Mexico. Traditional dim dum options include quail egg siu mai, har gow and the tasty When Pigs Fly, made of delicate steamed buns and Chinese barbecue pork.
For a seasonal treat (the menu keeps it fresh with additions of seasonal Chinese and Mexican flavors) try the tamale de camote, sweet potatoes packed into a traditionally made tamale. For a more rib-sticking, larger meal, the carne asada norteña includes a marinated and grilled 6-ounce flat-iron steak or try chef Andrés’ creative take on the Chinese street classic, Dan Dan mian, hand-cut noodles with a rich Szechuan ground pork sauce.
Don’t miss the specialty cocktail menu with a concentration on Mexican spirits. One of the coolest and most-popular choices is the salt-air margarita, where the salt doesn’t sit on the rim; rather it floats on top of the cocktail like a cloud of bubbles. –Kiko Miyasato

If you are looking for a night of luxury, duck into Caviar Bar, where a decadent menu from Shaun Hergatt guides you through a myriad of taste explorations and visual delights. The cocktails here are known for their beauty, and you can enjoy them both during your meal and during Caviar Bar’s cocktail hour. Some new items on the craft cocktail menu are the JP Old Fashioned, with Suntory Toki whiskey, lilikoi (passion fruit) and shiso; and the Ho’omaluhia mai tai, mixed with
Probitus rum, sorrel syrup, lime and egg white. Both are served tableside, so get those cameras at the ready! If you like, order champagne or vodka, and you’ll get a caviar bump. You’ll also find low-proof and zero proof drinks on the menu, like the Apollo’s Creed, with Lyre’s Dry London, cucumber and bergamot orange. Sounds refreshing, doesn’t it? New highlights for dinner include Hudson Valley seared foie gras, served with strawberry white balsamic, brioche and frisée; chicken
roulade with foie gras and vanilla purée; and Dover sole with a citrus relish and caper brown butter.
Of course, you may be here for the caviar—order one of Caspy Caviar’s emblematic tins on ice to enjoy with homemade blinis, crème fraîche and chives. Caviar Bar is also open for Sunday brunch starting at 11 a.m., so get a group together and see who has the better palate! –Nina King

own entrance and cocktail and food program. You could call this place sexy and upscale, too, where the handcrafted cocktails are on point and the ambience is swanky.
There’s open seating to lounge with a larger party, or club chairs so you can cozy up to your date. Or take a seat at the bar and talk with one of the knowledgeable bartend ers and ask them about the new signature cocktail menu. “The menu is a mixture of classic recipes and (modern) mixology,” says general manager Tyler Olson.
Olson suggests sampling a few of the new popular sips, like The Beverly Hills martini. “This one’s a crowd pleaser,” he says. “It’s a take on the Hemingway daiquiri.” It’s mixed with Ketel One Botanical vodka, grapefruit, lime, and Luxardo Maraschino cherries.
Try A Spot of Tea, a take on an Arnold Palmer, mixed with a trop-
ical-infused rum, lavender simple syrup, and lemon juice. “You’ll get some tropical notes and a nice lavender finish,” Olson says.
For a real classic cocktail experience mixed with The Count Room’s creativity, try the Japanese Old-Fashioned with Nikka Coffey Grain Whisky, simple syrup, Angostura bitters and orange bitters.
“It’s much lighter than the classic,” Olson says. “It’s very smooth and on the finish, you get a nice sense of orange. It’s kind of like a multisensory cocktail—you get the taste and smell of the orange.”
In addition to this Old-Fashioned, four other versions are available, says Olson, with their own distinct spirit as the base. “All five are unique and all with their own flavor profiles,” he says.
Repeat visits to The Count Room are certainly suggested, as the cocktail menu changes seasonally, and
special recipes pop up occasionally.
For those that need a little sustenance with their booze, The Count Room also offers elevated small plates from executive chef Luis Contreras, who runs the Bugsy & Meyer’s kitchen. The dishes offered at The Count Room are not offered inside the steakhouse, so take advantage of the specialty factor. The small plates include decadent wagyu short rib sliders served Montecristo-style, oysters Rockefeller and a Louie lobster roll on a brioche bun, served with house-made, sliced potato chips.
Olson, who joined The Count Room recently, says, “When I walked in here for the first time, I just saw unlimited potential. It’s a place you come to hang out. It’s a throwback to the old-school days of Las Vegas. You have to come check The Count Room out—it’s just really cool.” –Kiko Miyasato

It’s a storied name in old school Vegas, with a patriarch (Benny Binion) who built the Binion’s Horseshoe downtown. His son, Jack Binion, became president of the Horseshoe in 1963, and spearheaded the World Series of Poker installation at the casino in 1970 (Jack Binion was inducted into the Poker Hall
of Fame in 2005), When he sold most of his share of the Horseshoe and headed east, he built a roaring business of Horseshoe riverboat casinos, where today you’ll find some of the most revered steakhouses in the country, all going by the name Jack Binion’s Steak.
Here in Vegas, as Bally’s transitions
into the Horseshoe, it seems only fitting to tell you what you can expect from this fine establishment.
First, expect elegance without stuffiness. You’ll feel as at home in a tux as you do in a pair of jeans. The steakhouse retains many of the qualities of its predecessor, from the impressive

bar that welcomes you in, to a wine wall
you’ll pass on the way to the dining room. Across one wall, “Jack Binion’s Steak” is emblazoned on a neon sign, adding a touch of Vegas to the room.
Although it’s not always necessary to order a cocktail, it never hurts. The “Lucky 7” menu features classic drinks with Vegas nods, like The Boss’s Old Fashioned, with Maker’s Mark bourbon, Angostura bitters, a sugar cube and a bit of club soda. It comes accented with orange chip and Luxardo cherry accents. Best of all, it’s presented in a case from which wafts the aroma of
smoked cherry wood; it’s perfect for a steakhouse experience.
The appetizers are smoking, too, although not literally. The ketchup spiced house potato chips are served with a pepper jack fondue, and both chips and dip are excellent; the chips are crisp with a barbecue-type flavor, but deeper, and the fondue is pretty much perfect. Crispy sweet potato puffs are light little bites with a sweet maple flavor.
Jack’s twists up a typical steakhouse wedge salad (which is getting increasingly hard to find, BTW) with its Bloody Mary Shaken & Stirred wedge salad,
served with a tableside preparation of a Bloody Mary vinaigrette, a fried green tomato and blue cheese-stuffed olives.
You’ll find several cuts of beef on the menu, and I believe my dining companion was moaning across the table as he sliced into his ultra-tender filet mignon. You can even add on a loster tail. Order the bone-in ribeye, or the porterhouse for a really big experience. Prime rib is a specialty, available in three sizes. Salmon, black pepper cream shrimp with polenta cake, scallops and rotisserie chicken add more options for you.
The sides here would make a meal of their own. The pepper jack mac and cheese is a decadent dish covered in toasted cheese; the asparagus gets a Parmesan blanket of its own and the roasted carrots are attractive little morsels nestling in a bed of ginger-carrot purée. The ranch-spiced onion strings are sooo good; you’ll keep sneaking back for just one more. And the baked potato comes with shots of classic toppings, including that amazing fondue you had with your chips.
And if you’re up for dessert, try the chocolate layer cake for a sweet end to the meal. And the blackberry cobbler is divine! It comes with a sweet biscuit and vanilla ice cream—it’ll take you back to Grandma’s.

Every classic car has a story, and automotive stories abound at Mecum Auctions. This year, Mecum rolls into the Las Vegas Convention Center with vehicles of legend, including a Packard that Bugsy Siegel may have traveled in on the way to the Flamingo and a neoclassic Stutz that Elvis Presley gifted to his personal physician. High-end cars by Pantera, Lamborghini and Mercedes-Benz just scratch the surface of the wonders Mecum’s white-gloved handlers will be easing onto the auction block.
The 1933 Packard Twelve Sedan Limousine may be the most prestigious prize among Mecum’s offerings this year. Owner Bob Bright obtained it at auction in 1992 while it was on display at Main Street Station in Downtown Las Vegas. He subsequently loaned it to the Tropicana for its Las Vegas Mob Experience attraction, adding a black-and-maroon touch of class to the seminal Strip property.
The sale of the car made the news. “I bought it when Main Street Station went bankrupt,” says Bright. “They had an auction of all their properties, which included the car that they claimed to be Bugsy Siegel’s car.”
Main Street Station had the luxurious Packard on display for many years during a time that Bright was cleaning up at blackjack tables. Casinos blacklisted Bright due to his “advantage player” card-counting skills by the 1980s, making him a de facto modern-day
Vegas outlaw. The three-speed manual transmission limousine, with auction documents that identify it as “Bugsy’s Packard,” gave him a connection to Sin City’s past as he withdrew from having an active casino floor presence.
A 1971 Stutz Blackhawk provides another automotive connection to Vegas history. Like Packard, Stutz built its reputation in the early days of the auto industry, but its revival in the ’70s resulted in the Blackhawk becoming a favorite among entertainers such as Lucille Ball, Evel Knievel, Presley and Frank Sinatra. The King owned several and is pictured driving a 1973 model into Graceland hours before his death. Presley reportedly struggled with Sinatra to obtain the first Blackhawk to roll off the assembly line in 1970 and won.
The rules for winning at Mecum are a lot more straightforward than whatever maneuvers Presley used to outwit Sinatra. The big, black, decked-out V-8 Stutz will go the highest bidder, as will a gorgeous Magma Beam Orange 2021 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT Black Series with 197 miles on the odometer. The performance Mercedes features a hand-crafted AMG Bi-Turbo 4.0L V-8 engine rated at 720 horsepower, a seven-speed transmission and black leather interior with orange stitching.
For sheer design beauty, a 2017 Lamborghini Aventador SV LP750-4 sparkles with a “Glittered Blu Sideris” exterior that becomes a blur thanks to its naturally aspirated 6.5L 12-cylinder engine. A rare red Dodge Daytona, a Chevrolet Camaro Z28 and a high-performance COPO Camaro create a trifecta of 1969 muscle cars, but there’s much more to bid on at Mecum.
Just please don’t, for any reason, lean back against any of the cars. Please.

Post Malone does not like his voice.
He frequently runs late. Prior to recording his latest album, Twelve Carat Toothache, he didn’t like making music for a long time. He fell through a trap door and bruised his ribs at a St. Louis concert in September and had to cancel a subsequent date in Boston.
Other than those minor elements, everything is going swimmingly as the unflappable, soft-rocking rapper comes into the home stretch of his latest tour with a Friday night show in Las Vegas.
Malone is on top of the world after the birth of his daughter this summer. So far, he’s managed to keep his fiancée’s identity out of the media and focus on releasing singles and videos from Toothache, including “Cooped Up” with his opening act Roddy Ricch
and “I Like You (A Happier Song)” featuring Doja Cat.
The latter’s sunny optimism contrasts with moodier album tracks such as “I Cannot Be (A Sadder Song)” and “Love/Hate Letter to Alcohol.” From every other appearance, he seems pretty content. “Love/Hate” may address a delicate issue and a careless instance, but the guest appearance by Fleet Foxes results in a joyful noise of harmonies that causes shivers in the spine.
Malone’s appetite for magic mushrooms factored into the overall sonic dimensions of Toothache, creating a clear conduit between musical vision and output, but there’s one area he’s not completely secure about. “I’m so shy listening to any of my songs,” he told podcaster Zane Gray in June.
Malone says can’t listen to himself without great e ort.
Luckily for Malone, audiences are enthralled by his voice, a mellow instrument that croons and trills when not flowing with reams of lyrics Malone has little trouble accessing from his brain. One of his gifts is his likeability, which o sets his unorthodox appearance. “I would describe him as the worst-looking man I’ve ever seen and adorable all at the same time,” wrote author Tammy Davis, after taking her daughter to a concert.
Davis admits she’s not part of his target demographic, although she appreciates his music. That’s the key to Malone’s appeal. He has a natural gift for reaching people. Early concert footage shows fans at the foot of the stage ecstatically singing along with

early hits such as “White Iverson” and “Congratulations.” By the time he captured the zeitgeist of the pre-pandemic era with 2018’s beerbongs & bentleys, his reputation had grown beyond the youth market, and he was becoming a household name with the cheesiest grin in music.
A recent meet-and-greet after a Nashville concert symbolized the cross-generational appeal that Malone exudes and knows how to use. What does one do, after all, when encountering legend Randy Travis after a show? If you’re Malone, you challenge Travis, retired since a 2013 stroke, to a beer pong challenge as country star Luke Bryan and rising bluegrass talent Billy Strings look on. Then you give “infinite hugs” and enjoy the moment as a rockstar baby daddy should.

As a serial reality competition television watcher, I feel qualified to say with authority that America’s Got Talent is one of the best. Let your mind wander into “X” Burlesque
By Matt Kelemen
There is a number in “X” Burlesque that creates a legacy loop of sorts when five of the six dancers onstage for the night line up and turn their backsides to the audience. A large prop picture frame turns the scene into a sexy living photo. It’s an homage to an iconic image of Crazy Girls, a topless production that opened at the Riviera in 1987 and once employed “X” Burlesque co-creator Angela Stabile.
Crazy Girls closed last year, but Stabile and husband/ partner Matt Stabile, with daughter and co-producer Tiffany Mondell, are observing the 20th anniversary of “X” Burlesque this year at its home inside the Flamingo. The risqué revue continues to pack in enthusiastic audiences, opening shows with a signature segment involving levitating neon trumpets that float and spin on the darkened stage before the dancers are revealed. They embark on a series of sensual choreographic escapades delivered with contagious enthusiasm and physical abandon.
The performers are completely in control of themselves, though. Whitney Giron may look like she’s losing herself carnal ly during Led Zeppelin’s “Dazed and Confused,” but she’s com pletely focused while she’s in the moment. “It’s a very sensual and sexual number,” she says. “Anyone’s who’s in the audience has had those feelings of sensuality and being aroused.”
Giron came on board in November 2012 and finds little reason to leave. “My favorite thing is to be able to connect with an audience and pull them into our world, because that is what our show is,” says Giron. “It’s a sexy show and it’s topless, and I love using the stage to pull people in.”
The “X” dancers pull people in, dazzle with dance moves, flip hair and flirt, saunter through the audience and spin on a stripper pole in the center of the showroom floor. They appear flawless in physical movement and appearance, don thematic costumes such as flight attendant uniforms during Lenny Kravitz’ “Fly Away,” and at one point pull an audience member onstage for a semi-private dance.
Choreographer Anthony Cardella says there are three new numbers scheduled to be included. “We’re adding a hip-hop number, ‘Tap In’ by Saweetie. We have a new bed number by Adele, and we have a new solo by Etta James, ‘I Just Want to Make Love to You.’ We usually change out once a year, but we didn’t last year due to the pandemic. This year, because of the 20th anniversary, we decided it was time to change up.”
The show feels fresh in its current state, due to both the delivery of the dancers and dedication to precision among cast and crew. Giron, who came to “X” Burlesque after getting her start in Crazy Girls right after high school, says she didn’t have dancing topless in mind when she was growing up.
“Then you meet, and you get to know these incredible women, and realize they are talented, strong, independent and smart. … I love being onstage. It’s my favorite thing.”

Midcentury Memories
The Alta Drive Historic Neighborhood in Las Vegas is the perfect place to live. Not only are the homes there well-built, they’re all distinct, with styles ranging from midcentury modern to Mediterranean. Started in the 1950s, this neighborhood west of the downtown area, and a short drive from the Las Vegas Strip,
is a piece of history and a wonderful neighborhood for families. And a home has just become available there, one with plenty of space and plenty of character.
Listed by Chip Madsen with IS LUXURY, this two-story home features six bedrooms, five bathrooms and a two-car garage across 5,047
square feet. It’s a true retreat from the craziness of Las Vegas, with all the amenities you will ever need (and a few you didn’t even know that you needed!).
The curb appeal of this home is tremendous; it instantly makes you nostalgic for 1950s America, with nicely manicured lawns, immacu

late landscaping and a welcoming exterior. Things only get better once you enter and see the highlights throughout. Where to begin? How about the kitchen? It’s gourmet-style, featuring an induction cooktop, double oven (plus convection), island with bar seating, wet bar and a glass walk-in wine room.
All six bedrooms throughout this home have plenty of space, and the main-level master bedroom is a true centerpiece, with custom walk-in
closet, dual vanity, slipper tub and glass steam/shower. There’s also a full live-in casita above the garage. One of the best things about the master bedroom is its access to the masterful backyard, which features a parterre-style lawn and pergola-covered seating areas. It all surrounds a lovely oval pool, which features a lounge area, bar seating serviceable through specially hinged windows into the wet bar, and a kitchen-style barbecue area. In addition to a wonderful lifestyle,
you and your family have access to not only the Strip, but also Meadows Mall and the North Premium Outlets, not to mention being close to Harry Reid International Airport and the North Las Vegas Airport.
