Comedy has arguably never been bigger than it is right now. It feels like every time you fire up Netflix, Amazon Prime or any of the innumerable streaming services available nowadays, there’s a new comedy special that’s just been added. And it’s really good. Just like the one the day before. And the day before that. And comedians are starting to hit Las Vegas in large numbers. But none of them have played T-Mobile Arena, one of the largest such performance venues in all of Vegas. But that’s all about to change this week. One of comedy’s biggest stars, Jo Koy, becomes the first stand-up to perform at the 20,000-seat arena. It’s a milestone, not just for Koy but for Las Vegas and all of comedy. And editor at large Brock Radke talked to the comedian about the significance of the moment in this week’s issue (“Larger Than Life,” p. 32), as well as his current projects, which include a book and a movie, and what the future might bring. And that’s just the beginning of the amazing opportunities the city serves up this week. We’ll introduce you to Dominique Ansel, who opened his new bake shop at Caesars Palace (“From the Creator of the Cronut,” p. 18), preview Kevin Hart’s performance at Resorts World Las Vegas (“A OneMan Comedy Empire,” p. 20), and take you on a tour of the new brunch at Crossroads Kitchen at the same property (“A Brunch for Everyone,” p. 12). If you’re looking for some family fun, you’ll want to head straight to High Roller, which offers plenty more than just amazing views during its 30-minute rotation at The Linq Promenade (“A Well-Rounded Experience,” p. 36). Las Vegas is, and has always has been, a reflection of the latest trends. And Las Vegas Magazine is always there to make sure you’re up to date on them. We’re glad you picked this week to visit!

A Brunch for Everyone

You’re sure to find the perfect eye-opener at this Resorts World plant-based restaurant If you need a good brunch spot, I’ve got a recommendation: Crossroads Kitchen. The plant-based eatery recently announced a brunch menu on Saturdays and Sundays. Chef Tal Ronnen imported the Vegas version of Crossroads from Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles to Resorts World this summer, and it’s been packed since then. It’s impossible to imagine this brunch won’t be just as successful. One of the tenets of the cuisine here is that it’s just good food; sometimes it has an uncanny resemblance to the meat dish it’s based on, and sometimes it simply evokes the experience of that dish. Take the chestnut foie gras, for instance. The spread is smooth and unctuous, served with crispy toasts, with a flavor that channels the traditional food product. You’ll want a cocktail, and the glory of Crossroads is even the drinks are vegan, so everyone can indulge. Sip on The People’s Paloma, with Teremana blanco, Cointreau and lime and grapefruit juice; or, as is traditional with brunch, a refreshing mimosa. If you want to ease off the alcohol, try a mocktail such as the Espresso Marti-No with Lyre’s coffee liqueur, or the Cos-No-Politan, with Seedlip Grove 42; I can confirm that the Espresso Marti-No is delicious, and I offered not one sip to anyone else at the table on the morning I dined! But, seriously, sharing is encouraged, as it lets you sample several creative dishes during your meal. Perfect for brunch, the bagel tower comes with several tiers of toppings, from smoked whitefish salad (hearts of palm), smoked carrot lox, cucumber, tomato, cream cheeses and kelp caviar! It’s so impressive! Chicken and waffles is served with layered potato Rosti, a sprig of rosemary and a spicy maple syrup. Stuffed French toast, a “cheesy” breakfast burrito with Impossible sausage, and pancakes round out the breakfast items. My favorite was perhaps the figs and feta, a simple dish with bruléed figs that is incredibly flavorful. You can also get pasta like fettucine and truffles, and spaghetti and meatballs, plus pizza that is topped with Vertage cashew cheese. Meet your new favorite brunch spot! –Nina King Resorts World Las Vegas, 702.550.2333

An R&B King

The legendary singer who helped bring new jack swing to prominence hits Vegas Keith Sweat’s “I Want Her” was inescapable in 1988. New jack swing may have already been in development, but the blend of drum machine rawness and unadulterated funk coalesced on the first single from Sweat’s 1987 debut album Make It Last Forever. That was due in no small part to producer Teddy Riley, whose perfectionist’s touch would grace Sweat’s first three albums and many of the songs Sweat performs Friday evening in Las Vegas. Their connections date back to Harlem as the aspiring musicians were entering the music business separately through early projects. Sweat worked in finance for Paine Webber and funded his own demos as Riley moved toward making his big splash with Guy. The new jack sound had been bubbling up through the production work of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, most notably on Janet Jackson’s “Nasty,” but had yet to be recognized as a style all its own. Sweat’s confidence and self-assurance playing the lover man on quiet storm ballads balanced the rat-a-tat signature snare triplets of new jack, distinguishing Sweat’s persona from the hip-hop and pop hitmakers of the day. The title track from Make It Last Forever and “Don’t Stop Your Love” became hit singles, and a track that didn’t make the album, “Just Got Paid,” became a huge smash for Johnny Kemp. The chart-toppers would continue through 1996 with singles such as “Nobody” and “Twisted,” and in 1997 he would join forces with Gerald Levert and Johnny Gill in supergroup LSG. Sweat’s latest setlists have included LSG’s “My Body” as well as “Let’s Chill” by Guy, and “Freak Me” and “Lose Control” by Silk. Sweat discovered and produced that Atlanta act’s debut before resettling to that city and boosting its music scene. He’s a legend now, R&B royalty who made headlines in September for singing “Don’t Stop Your Love” at a Lil Wayne birthday party. For fans like the 40-year-old rapper, Sweat’s musical impact will indeed last forever. –Matt Kelemen

Quiet Time

Despite silence, comedian creates an uproarious show

I had never been to see Tape Face; indeed, I had never seen him appear on America’s Got Talent. However, I have been regaled with story after story about the onstage antics at his shows. And after seeing him live, I can confirm they are all true! Breaking the ice before the main show is a funny balloon act, putting the audience in the perfect frame of mind for the fun to come. Although Tape Face doesn’t speak during the show

16 | 11.13.22 Las Vegas Magazine

(letting his eyes do the talking), his helpers occasionally do, shepherding volunteers onstage. And yes, there is a ton of volunteer action, so don’t be surprised if you are chosen to help out. In one act, Tape Face sets up his guest, positioning balloons strategically between both his and the volunteer’s legs and arming each with a stapler— then the classic Western duel notes issue through a loudspeaker. You can guess what happens next! Star Wars

gets an homage as well, with tape measures standing in for light sabers. A golf-inspired bit will have you cringing and cheering at the same time. And, somehow apropos for Vegas, a stripper (of sorts) will be spotted onstage. If you are chosen as a volunteer, get up there! It’s maybe the quickest way to gain access to the imagination we all had as children. –Nina King Harrah’s, 702.777.2782

From the Creator of the Cronut Award-winning chef sweetens up the Strip with new pastry shop at Caesars Palace James Beard Award-winning pastry chef Dominique Ansel—famous for his creation, the Cronut— recently opened the doors to his own bake shop at Caesars Palace. Dominique Ansel Las Vegas is filled with signature pastries and only-in-Vegas treats. Ansel recently spoke with Las Vegas Magazine to talk about his sweet creations and his new shop. The Cronut—why blend the two types of pastries? And were you surprised how well it worked out? We wanted to create something special for Mother’s Day back in 2013, and my wife had suggested a donut, but I didn’t have any recipes for a donut—I’m French! We decided to create something that resembled the shape of a donut but using a laminated dough that’s similar to a croissant with those flaky layers and textures. It took more than two months of testing and 10 different recipes to finalize, and now, almost nine years later, we still create a new flavor every month, in each location, never repeating. Briefly explain your other inventions, the Cookie Shot and Frozen S’More.

18 | 11.13.22 Las Vegas Magazine

Once the Cronut launched, I told myself it was important to continue creating, to keep pushing ourselves. I learned here in America, people eat cookies with milk, something I had never heard of growing up. So, I wanted to create a fun way to serve cookies with milk, and we started the Cookie Shot soon after, a warm chocolate chip cookie shaped like a shot glass, served warm and filled to order with house-made, vanilla-infused milk. With the Frozen S’more, we were getting ready for summer and my team told me that kids make s’mores at summer camp or in their backyards. We turned the idea of a childhood s’more into a portable ice cream version that you could walk around Soho with, with a center of Madagascan vanilla ice cream covered with chocolate feuilletine, wrapped in honey marshmallow that’s torched to order on a smoked willow wood branch. When you get a sweet tooth yourself, what do you like to eat best from all your creations? The DKA (Dominique’s Kouign Amann) is always my favorite, and something that’s been on our menu since day one in New York City. It’s our version of the classic kouign-

amann from Brittany, made lighter and less dense, similar to a caramelized croissant with tender layers inside with a slightly gooey center, and a golden caramelized crunchy crust outside. I try one each morning as a quality check, and it’s still my go-to breakfast each day. Why should Vegas visitors come check out your new bakery? How does it feel to have your own bakery on the Las Vegas Strip? What I’m most excited about for each shop is that we dedicate a large portion of the menu for new items made exclusively for the city. Here in Las Vegas, our Lucky 7 pastry collection is inspired by lucky symbols from different cultures around the world, and we hope they’ll bring good fortune and well wishes to everyone. I’ve been so grateful to have the chance to open here in Las Vegas and am very thankful to have a home at Caesars Palace. We’ve welcomed guests from all over the world, including many of our regulars in New York City—so I’m excited for what’s to come. –Kiko Miyasato

A One-Man Comedy Empire ‘Reality Check Tour’ brings multifaceted performer back to Las Vegas

If anyone qualifies as a Renaissance man of stand-up, it’s Kevin Hart. The Philadelphia-born comedian’s boundless energy is channeled in so many productive directions that an argument can be made for the existence of a secret twin. It’s just Hart appearing in dozens of successful comedy movies, film franchises, television series, a spoof of the Real Housewives concept and a prank reality show for which he masqueraded as a Lyft driver. Between a fruitful deal with Netflix, his own Hartbeat Studios and Laugh Out Loud Network, Hart has become a major force in entertainment. Seven years ago when he was named by Time as one of the 100 Most Influential People, Chris Rock cited him as the biggest comedian in the country. “I don’t think there’s even a No. 2,” wrote Rock. “In Kevin’s comedy, there’s the minute observations of Jerry Seinfeld, the family-oriented storytelling of Bill Cosby and the open-wound honesty of Richard Pryor. But mostly there’s a lot of Kevin Hart.” Since then, he’s successfully harnessed that influence and created enterprises that that keep a lot of peers and professionals employed, while still finding time to lend his talents to projects such as his buddy Chris Spencer’s upcoming film Back on the Strip. His current Reality Check Tour brings him back to the Strip for his two-date debut at Resorts World Las Vegas. –Matt Kelemen Resorts World Las Vegas, 9 p.m. Nov. 18-19, starting at $69 plus tax and fee. axs.com

Day or night, it’s always the right time to visit Chica, an energetic restaurant with Latin vibes. Venezuelan-born chef Lorena Garcia, in conjunction with the 50 Eggs Hospitality Group, opened Chica in 2017, bringing the flavors and dishes of many Latin and South American countries to prominence on the Strip. Since then, Garcia and 50 Eggs have opened a Miami Chica and one in Aspen, and earlier this year gave the restaurant a makeover, changing up the dining area and bringing a garden-esque, Miami vibe to the bar area. In the rear of the restaurant, the large grill still dominates. The menu got a makeover at the same time, keeping some of Garcia’s most popular dishes while adding plenty of new ones. The restaurant is open daily for both brunch and dinner, so planning a return visit on your trip is a great option. If you are in for brunch, there are some amazing dishes to consider, like the guava cornflake French toast; the fried chicken and waffle, with crispy Yucatan-style chicken and a hot honey sauce; the eggs Benedict cazuela, with poached eggs and chorizo on a cheese arepa (the arepa is that delicious little cake that Chica

Asado negro arepas

Flaming skull

is known for); a 10-ounce prime skirt steak with eggs; avocado toast with pomegranate, pumpkin seeds and Fresno chile on a wonderful multigrain bread, definitely in the upper echelon of the avocado toast realm; and the ember-roasted cauliflower, served with a coco-cauliflower purée (that smoky flavor is lovely). For dinner, make sure you get a basket of Lorena’s arepas (they come in beet, cilantro, black bean, and cheese) or the asado negro arepas with braised short rib, as you indulge in a cocktail like the Chica classic, the Chica-rita, with blanco tequila pineapple, lime, agave, and bitters. Chica also has a variety of hot and cold dishes that act a lot like a tapas menu—Peruvian ceviche, crispy tuna tacos, wood-fired mushroom barbacoa and wood oven-roasted Peruvian ceviche are some of the offerings. The guacamole comes with crispy plantain chips that you’ll find yourself munching on throughout the meal; they are absolutely fabulous. For your entrée, consider the cowboy steak, a 30-day dry-aged ribeye or grilled sea bass, both cooked over an open fire grill, or the massive tomahawk, served as a special many nights. A pepita-crusted lamb rack comes via the wood oven, as does spit-roasted Peruvian chicken.

Guava cornflake french toast

Order roasted street corn, fire-roasted Brussels sprouts or huancaina mashed potatoes for sides with extreme flavor. Huancaina is a Peruvian sauce of chilis, onions and queso fresco, an excellent accompaniment to the potatoes. For your dessert, you’ll have a hard time choosing, but ordering several for the group will solve your dilemma.: The Corn is strawberry flan cheese-

cake with raspberry Tajin—and it really looks like an ear of corn. But the most impressive is the flaming skull, a chocolate concoction that is poured over with flame, melting the skull and revealing warm lava cake, horchata ice cream, and fruit and corn marshmallows (yes, made of corn)! This is the most show-stopping presentation, and you’ll want to film it for posterity.

Long recognized as one of the country’s premier stand-up comedians, 51-year-old Jo Koy was already riding high on blockbuster Netflix specials Comin’ In Hot and In His Elements when he released his first book last year, the autobiographical Mixed Plate: Chronicles of an All-American Combo. The wellreviewed and moving memoir continued Koy’s narrative pattern of digging into his personal, familial and cultural history, taking his hilarious and heartfelt anecdotes from the stage to the page. Then 2022 rolled around, sending Koy on his first arena tour around the country and witnessing the theatrical release of Easter Sunday, a feature film based on those family stories and his other comedy material. He starred along with Lydia Gaston, Eugene Cordero, Tia Carrere and Lou Diamond Phillips. It was a groundbreaking experience for

32 | 11.13.22 Las Vegas Magazine

Koy, who plans to continue to develop film projects from behind the camera and break down walls for other Filipinos, Asian Americans and artists of all colors. Now he’s coming back to the city where it all started. Koy first dabbled in comedy in a coffee shop in Las Vegas while attending UNLV. On Nov. 19, he’ll become the first comedian to headline at T-Mobile Arena, which would be a dream come true if he could have ever imagined it.

I keep pinching myself, and I know that’s a cliché, but put yourself in my shoes. Madison Square Garden, huh? T-Mobile Arena? Those are venues that usually have a band playing, or a team plays there. That’s what that house is for, so when you get a comic to go in there and do it, I’m pinching myself. It’s above and beyond anything I’ve dreamed about, and for it to come to life like this, it’s nuts.

Comics, and anybody in general, like to do residencies in Vegas. We like to do casinos. But my whole thing was, I’m on this arena tour, I’m going to Vegas and I want to play an arena. And then I come to find out I’m the first comic to ever play T-Mobile Arena, which is kind of a cool thing. There are other arenas, big giant ones in Las Vegas, but there’s something special about T-Mobile, just sitting there on the Strip. Locals claim it. And people from out of town, when you say T-Mobile Arena, they know it. It’s already an iconic part of Vegas.

I told myself a long time ago, I’d never go inside MSG unless I was going to be

part of the show, part of somebody’s act, or headlining it myself. And I stuck to it. I was offered Knicks tickets, show tickets, all this stuff, and I just would not go. I can’t walk into that venue until it’s my show, and it finally came. But it was tough. Turning down free tickets? What are you doing, dude?

had to take care of before I could even think about trying to make it funny, so many things we wanted to squeeze into this movie. It was the first time you had a story in a Hollywood film where the lead is a Filipino woman. (In the end) I was very proud of myself, and so happy with DreamWorks and Universal and what they did for me. They went above and beyond for me.

Making a movie, people don’t know what it takes. It’s stressful, it’s so rewarding, it’s a lot of fun, and there’s zero sleep. But there was a lot of responsibility on my shoulders to make this movie, a lot of representation (issues). There were so many firsts I

I want to continue producing. I’m addicted to being behind the camera now and I want to showcase the other talent that’s out there. I know how hard it was for me, and now that the door is open I want to keep it open and present more talent, not just Filipino talent, but other cultures and ethnicities that want to be heard. I want to see what I can do to help make that happen.

So many. Matteo Lane is hysterical, one of the funniest comics out there right now, and he’s the one I’m working on first. We’re going to get a special knocked out right away. Asif Ali, who costarred in the movie, he’s unbelievable funny, just a killer, a beast. I’m already in talks with JR De Guzman.

I’m beyond excited, especially with this new hour (of material). My new special (Live From the Los Angeles Forum) just dropped, and I love this hour I’ve been working on now, so it’s just like, let’s go! Is this really happening?

No other Strip show pushes boundaries like Absinthe Absinthe at Caesars Palace is a show where the comedy doesn’t push the envelope; it shreds it. It’s a show that whisks audiences away to a world where anything goes—and we do mean anything. Yes, the talents on display here mesmerize like few others on the Strip, but to say it’s adults-only is putting it lightly. When it comes to the comedy, both spoken and physical, you’re going to need to be open. You have to be willing to let your guard down and let your freak flag fly, because eventually the whole audience will be waving theirs proudly. It’s a show that makes it OK to be naughty, and your hosts The Gazillionaire and his assistant Wanda Widdles are both the creators and ambassadors of that naughtiness. And from that impropriety comes those big laughs—the comedy here is

38 | 11.13.22 Las Vegas Magazine

crass and all sass; it’s also super-sexual, and the audience absolutely eats it up from start to finish. Let’s talk about the rotating cast of talent. During a recent show, audiences were treated to a cornucopia of acts made to amaze and

a straight face. There’s even opportunity for couples to get up onstage and compete in a lap-dance competition for free cocktails. Speaking of inebriation—you’ll get drunk with delight when The Green Fairy makes an appearance for some song and striptease—doing justice to the show’s namesake spirit from which she was spawned. We can’t forget to talk about Absinthe’s home, too. The theater construction is a nod to the traveling circuses of yesteryear, and the theater-in-the-round is erected under a speigeltent that gives off old vaudevillian vibes. Plan on getting there a little early so you can hang outside the tent and play some games like cornhole or kick it with a cocktail underneath the huge LED tree. Inside you can order drinks from the bar, or

if you paid for table seating, cocktail servers will stop by and take drink orders. The party atmosphere of the show fits in perfectly with the Vegas crowd, too. If you’re wanting entertainment where you get to hoot and holler, laugh out loud and cheer and loudly applaud, this is the show to do it. Absinthe really is an anything-goes show that takes the audience through 90 minutes of extremely impressive entertainment and jaw-on-the-floor comedy. And once it’s all done, you can’t wait to experience it all over again.
