She’s on Fire

Country superstar returns to the Strip to heat up the house with her ‘Velvet Rodeo’ residency

Record-shattering, award-winning country superstar Miranda Lambert may want to see the desert from a painted palomino, but she doesn’t seem to mind actin’ up on the Zappos Theater stage in Las Vegas instead.

Hosting her first-ever Las Vegas residency, Velvet Rodeo, Lambert belts an extensive selection of hits from a catalog of tunes that couldn’t have been easy to prune into a single concert. With nine solo albums and four more released with Pistol Annies (a band featuring Lambert alongside Ashley Monroe and Angaleena Presley), the singer boasts more than 75 awards for the tracks that made her famous. In fact, the Academy of Country Music acknowledged Lambert as its most awarded solo female artist during its 2015 award show, where Lambert also received a plaque from Guinness World Records for having the most consecutive wins in ACM’s “Female Vocalist of the Year” category.

Lambert clearly had a hankering for getting into something when she set out to create Velvet Rodeo, playing Nov. 26-27, Dec. 3-4, 8 and 10-11. The stage might as well be soaked in kerosene, because the singer lights on fire when the spotlight hits—sometimes literally, thanks to a jacket that shoots out sparks.

Enlivening Velvet Rodeo, ceiling projections, dynamic lighting and fierce pyrotechnics engulf the entire theater, teleporting its audience from day to night, from music video to animated background, from hit to hit.

No detail has been spared in this show, but flashy set design or not, raw, unadulterated talent has long been paramount to the star’s success. But those qualities aren’t found just within the singer, they wind throughout the entire production. It takes all kinds of kinds to curate an excellent residency, and Lambert’s kind is simply gifted.

Guitarists Ethan Ballinger and Jerry Massey stun while steel guitarist Spencer Cullum and bassist Jonathan Murray bring richness to the stage. Keys player Daniel Mitchell, drummer Max Zemanovic and backing vocalist Gwen Sebastian carry listeners through the songs, each bringing their own pow erful harmonies.

Together, the collective brings listen ers their favorite songs, from ballads like “The House That Built Me” and “Carousel” to revenge songs like “Gunpowder & Lead” and “Mama’s Broken Heart.”

Once you take your seat (which you probably won’t be sitting in for long), you’re in for 90 minutes of fun.

More than just a concert, this residency has a storytelling quality to it. As Lambert guides you from song to song, it’s almost as if she’s loaded you up into her little red wagon (hopefully she’s fixed the front seat and axle) and taken you on a ride through her musical journey. It’s not necessarily chronological, but by the time the curtain closes, she’s shown you what lies within a heart like hers. –Em Jurbala

Give Thanks!

Few holidays bring families together like Thanksgiving, and few cities do Thanksgiving like Las Vegas. The multitude of offerings this week is mind-boggling, but there’s something for everyone, so get to planning! (All menus are Nov. 24 only unless specified.)

Cake Boss Buddy Valastro is all about family, so you can bet his eponymous restaurant at The Venetian is ready to satisfy you and yours. Buddy V’s Ristorante offers a threecourse meal: roasted butternut squash soup, slow-roasted turkey breast and pumpkin bundt cake.

Also at The Venetian, Thomas Keller’s Bouchon elevates the turkey feast with foie gras, short ribs and seafood (don’t forget the wine!).

Over at MGM Grand, Emeril’s New Orleans Fish House serves up seasonal items like purple sweet potato and baby carrot salad, tempura fried spicy salmon and avocado rolls, turkey with homemade andouille sausage and Creole green beans and pumpkin spice cake.

One of the Strip’s premier steakhouses, STK at The Cosmopolitan, offers the tempting combo of roasted free-range turkey with confit turkey thighs with foie gras stuffing and Brussels sprouts, topped off with spiced pumpkin pie with candied ginger cream and crunch caramel honeycomb. This menu is available from Nov. 24-27.

Scotch 80 Prime at Palms takes an innovative twist with creamy kabocha soup (king crab hush puppies, fall spices, Chantilly cream and fine herbs) in addition to roasted young tom turkey breast, with a pear tart tatin for dessert.

For those off the Strip, Red Rock Resort’s Hearthstone Kitchen & Cellar offers a choice of harvest salad or butternut squash bisque, followed by herb-crusted turkey, with either a slice of apple or pumpkin pie for dessert.

If you’d like your Thanksgiving with a bit of Irish spirit, head over to Rí Rá Irish Pub at The Shoppes at Mandalay Place, where the menu includes herb-roasted turkey, Kilbeggan salmon (stuffed with cream cheese, dill, crab and shrimp) and pumpkin cheesecake. Ken Miller

There are plenty of options to celebrate the holiday in style around the valley

Holiday Cheer

One of the Las Vegas Strip’s longest-running productions also has one of the most beloved holiday shows.

Tournament of Kings, a dinner show that features medieval pageantry and different cheering sections, features ’Twas the Knight from Nov. 23-Dec. 25, and it’s a show your family will be talking about for years to come.

Yes, there are still the sections representing the different knights’ coun tries—Austria, France, Hungary, Ireland, Sweden, Spain and Romania—and

yes, there are still the gallant knights, their steeds, weaponry and well-cho reographed clashes to get your pulse racing (and your full-throated cheering going). And yes, there’s still the food you eat with your hands—Cornish game hens, dinner rolls, corn on the cob and potatoes. But there are enough twists here to truly put you in the holiday spirit.

The wintry theme includes holi day-inspired music, poems and songs (audience participation is encouraged, because ’Twas the Knight is all about

interaction), along with holiday costumes, banners, flags and a castle light that casts a soft glow on the proceedings. And Merlin summons all the magic at his disposal to make it “snow” upon the kingdom.

And that meal we previously described? It comes with a hand-decorated sugar cookie. Sometimes it’s the simplest things that make all the difference during the holidays. –Ken Miller

Crafty Comedy

Superstar comedian turns disruptive behavior into huge laughs on the Strip

Carrot Top is like that kid in school that was a nonstop fount of comedy. Everything the kid did was effortlessly funny and he could make you laugh uncontrollably until you were sent to the principal’s office because you were deemed a disruptive presence while the kid turned back to his sketchbook and satirized the poor student who accidentally passed gas in class by expertly drawing a giant butt blowing up a farmhouse with a burst of flatulence.

Not that Carrot Top ever made fun of anyone. His humor was a natural defense against being teased for living in Florida but not having the tan, surfer’s build and sun-streaked hair that was predominant in teen social hierarchies of coastal culture. Before his mop of red hair became a comic asset, he learned to distract and disarm people who might make light of his pale skin and gangly frame with humor, and he got very good at it. Carrot Top learned to become the life of the party.

The party is now in a theater on the mezzanine level at the Luxor. Carrot Top’s physique is now that of a bodybuilder who segued into cardio after retiring from competition, but the mop of hair is so iconic now that dedicated fans come to shows wearing Carrot Top wigs. Prop comedy is the foundation of his show, with sight gags coming faster than the brain can process at some points.

Carrot Top’s mental sketchbook for his current comedy phase is often filled with ideas that incorporate video, which do not translate well to television talk shows. Carrot Top is best experienced live, where at points he may run through the crowd and give personal smiles to audience members in the first few rows. He gets athletic towards the finale, which is the best way to describe the climactic conclusion without spoiling the surprise.

Uncontrollable laughter will not be considered disruptive. –Matt Kelemen

Steadfast Steakhouse

Long-established restaurant stays true to the principles that made it a classic

Some restaurants follow a very simple rule: If it works, don’t mess with it. And for most diners, that’s something to be admired and appreciated. And it’s a big reason why Old Homestead Steak house has endured for as long as it has—since 1868, to be exact. When brothers Marc and Greg Sherry brought over the Las Vegas version of the New York City classic to Caesars Palace (complete with “Annabelle the Cow,” a decoration that topped the original restaurant’s roof for decades), it was an instant hit, and that’s because it stays true to its core concept: Great steaks, and all that goes with that.

That means that, while taking in the low lighting, dark woods and burgundy leather booths, you’ll get to enjoy all your favorite steakhouse staples: colossal shrimp cocktail, a seafood platter with everything from Maine lobster to West Coast oysters, jumbo lump crab cake and steak tartare. If you want a soup or salad before your main course, opt for French onion soup or the steakhouse wedge. They’re both meant to deeply satisfy, and they do.

The steak program here is beyond reproach, all dry-aged for a minimum of 30 days and seared and crusted at 1,200 degrees. That means that no matter what your order—be it a 10-ounce filet mignon, 38-ounce tomahawk ribye, veal chop Milanese or 8-ounce American wagyu rib cap—you’re getting the very best quality, and the maximum amount of flavor in every bite. Some things should never change. Especially not if they work. And oh boy, this really does. –Ken Miller

A Very Good Year

There are few bands that have had the opportunity to name an album after a song with a title that is also the band’s name. There’s Black Sabbath, The 1975 and … maybe one more. Manchester’s The 1975 sounds quite different than Birmingham’s Sabbath, and it doesn’t sound much like it’s been influenced by Manchester’s rich lineage of music artists either.

The 1975 is focused on making history in the present with the quartet’s own varietal of indie electropunk emocore, or whatever

combination of adjectives music reviewers try to describe it with. Drummer George Daniel, guitarist Adam Hann and bassist Ross MacDonald joined up with frontman Matty Healy as youths and matured musically together, developing a sound on early EPs that can only result from a band of brothers.

By the time 2013’s The 1975 was released, The 1975 was poised for superstardom. Its members enjoyed titling The 1975 ’s lead track “The 1975” so much they went on to title the lead track of their next

three albums “The 1975” as well. Being Funny in a Foreign Language, released just last month, debuted at No. 1 in the U.K. and Australia, and broke the U.S. Top 10, setting the stage for celebration at the band’s show in Las Vegas.

Opening act Blackstarkids will get the party started right with the trio’s exuberant, genre-bending, hip-hop-based jams. –Matt Kelemen

Turn on the Charm

You’ve brought your lover to Las Vegas but now you need to know where to take them. The pressure is off, my friends, because we’ve made the choice for you. Any of the following spots are perfect for a romantic rendezvous.

Sleek and sexy with a bit of old-school Vegas glamour is what S Bar at Mandalay Bay offers. The

lounge, filled with dark woods, brass accents, luxe drapery, and plush seating, offers eclectic live music and an impressive menu of specialty cocktails. Beautiful in presentation and delicious in flavor, the cocktails are a mix of fruits, juices, and herbs. Might we suggest the That’s What I Like option—for $75 per person you get champagne and strawberries all

evening. For those looking to love late into the night, S Bar recently launched its after-hours party on Saturday nights, “Late Affair.” The immersive evening is filled with sexy performance art, guest engagement and sultry deep-house music from international DJs. This one-ofa-kind party begins after midnight and go until the sun rises.

The Shag Room, S Bar, and Alle
These romantic bars and lounges are perfect for date night Shag Room

While many people opt for dinner at The Mayfair Supper Club at Bellagio, we prefer the lounge area for cocktails and conversation. The supper club feel and décor, is simply stunning. We recommend grabbing a seat at the bar and browsing through an impressive menu of champagne (we love the champagne cocktails!), wine and both modern and classic cocktails. The ambience will truly transport you and your sweetie to old-school Vegas.

For a date with awesome views, head to Alle Lounge on 66 at Re sorts World Las Vegas. Entering the lounge on the 66th floor feels and looks as if you’ve entered some very rich person’s New York City loft. The look and design of the space is quite slick, with floor-to-ceiling windows that look out over the city. There’s plenty of sofa seating and club chairs. And Alle on 66 also provides some very rare bottled brown spirits that’ll break the bank—so if you want to splurge, this is place to do it. Guests can also enjoy a menu of elevated bar-food options like oysters on the half shell and wagyu sliders. Live jazz and contemporary music round out the experience.

One of the most-intimate bars, and decadent in décor, on the Strip is Rosina Cocktail Lounge at The Palazzo. Try and snag one of the semi-private booths for real romance vibes. The champagne call button—yes, they’ll bring you champagne with the push of a button— will keep you seated and your date happy and giddy all night.

Our last recommendation is off-Strip at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas. The Shag Room (I mean, the name!) is bohemian-meets-Arabian nights-meets-Moroccan décor—visually, it’s such a cool setting. Enjoy delicious bourbon and specialty cocktails and live music on the weekends and open-mic nights during the week. –Kiko Miyasato

Michael Nealy Baker

Michael Nealy Baker, senior server for Fresco Italiano at Westgate Las Vegas, will bring you out pasta and chicken Parm, but he does more than just serve guests at the Italian restaurant. Baker puts on a show, serenading the tables he serves. (This writer got a little taste of Baker’s singing talents and ... wow!)

“I always want to excel beyond expectation, giving guests something they’ve never seen before,” he says. “An individual or family can come and sit at the table and order their food, enjoy the cocktails and pay their check and go

about their business. But the one thing I’ve always believed in, is giving them an experience that they’ll talk about.”

Baker has a long history of performing: He comes from a performing arts family. There was always music in his house growing up in cities including St. Louis, Ill., Flint, Mich., and the Bronx, N.Y. When he got into the food and beverage industry as a server 25 years ago, he also began to serenade his guests. When he transferred to Las Vegas in 2000, he continued using those niche talents at restaurants like Top of the

Cranberry Mojito

Fresco Italiano offers a nice selection of handcrafted cocktails created by their mixologist. A popular pick to pair with Fresco’s Italian dishes is the cranberry mojito, which is mixed with Ketel One Botanical Grapefruit Rose vodka, fresh lime juice, cranberry juice, mint leaves and sweet and sour, and has a garnish of cranberries. –KM

World at The STRAT and Carmine’s at The Forum Shops at Caesars. He began to gain a reputation in the industry— and on Tripadvisor—and Westgate got wind of his talents, hiring him in 2017.

“Now I have a crazy amount of requests,” Baker says. “I’ll sing at one table and then I’ve got five behind that. But I want to make it crystal clear—this isn’t about Michael Nealy Baker, no it is not. This is about the Fresco Italiano family. Giving some thing to all those who walk through our threshold.” –Kiko

If your group is craving Asian cuisine, head to the delightful Kumi Japanese Restaurant & Bar. Kumi seems like an oasis, with bamboo and sleek interiors yielding a very zen feel. A high ceiling lofts over the dining area, where the gorgeous colors of cherry blossoms abound.

Both the cocktail and food menus were recently revamped by the Kumi team. The cocktail menu includes a number fruity, flavorful sips. On the food side, Japanese dishes with a Korean American twist include plenty of shared plates, both hot and cold, plus a variety of entrées. Although most items changed, some stayed, including nigiri and sashimi.

Warm and cool dishes include a bluefin tuna pizza with onion, a ponzu aioli and truffle oil; steak tartare, constructed with Prime beef and served with milk bread and gochujang dressing; soy ginger tofu with silken tofu, ginger scallion sauce and tosaka; a chicken katsu sando with black garlic tonkatsu sauce; marinated maple-glazed pork ribs; and wagyu gyoza.

Entrées include galbi toban, wagyu tomahawk, crispy striped bass, Kumi yakisoba noodles and even a chef’s tasting menu, with a variety of hot and cold dishes plus your choice of strip loin, grilled salmon or wagyu ribeye

On the sashimi menu, find everything from unagi and anago to king crab and Japanese scallops; you can order separately or get the moriawase. A great option is the popular sushi set (pictured), with crispy rice, two specialty rolls, nigiri

and sashimi. It’s a feast. If you order ahead, you could even score a vegan set, courtesy of the inventive chef. The faux yellowfish is mind-boggling!

The Kumi rolls feature a variety of unusual ingredients, from the Hot Mess with poke sashimi and kanikama to the Seven Deadly Sins with king crab, wagyu, truffle , foie gras and caviar.

And don’t miss the coconut tapioca or a chef’s selection of mochi ice cream for dessert.

Emo Nite creates an experience to remember at Resorts World’s Zouk Nightclub

The cultural nostalgia cycle gener ally runs in 15-year cycles. Music embraced by 20-year-olds gets replaced by equal and opposite trends as adulting sets in, but the

bands we grew up with remain the best as times change. Eventually the tribes find a way to reunify, and for fans of the most predominant post-millennium phenomenon in

rock, Emo Nite (now with a monthly residency at Resorts World Las Vegas) is Valhalla.

There are venues with nights dedicated to emo all over the country with varying degrees of presentation and professionalism. The desire to congregate and sing along to choruses from Fall Out Boy and My Chemical Romance has been

32 | 11.20.22 Las Vegas Magazine

palpable to people like Emo Nite co-founders T.J. Petracca and Morgan Freed for nearly a decade. Along with early partner Babs Szabo, the Emo Nite crew cultivated a party from L.A. dive bar beginnings in 2014 to its current headquarters at Hollywood’s Avalon nightclub.

Now Freed and Petracca take Emo Nite on tour across North America. In October 2021, they produced an ambitious three-day Emo Nite Vegas Vacation featuring acts such as Avril Lavigne, Machine Gun Kelly and Mod Sun. The debut weekend of the residency at Resorts World’s Zouk Nightclub may have been the saving grace of the wind-whipped When We Were Young festival, giving emo fans a place to gravitate to after Day One of the festival was canceled.

“I think a lot of people were positive about it,” says Petracca. “I got a lot of messages from people saying, ‘Thank you for saving my weekend.’

There were people just going on Saturday ending up having nothing to do and they went to the nightclub show, and that (wound) up being the highlight of their trip.”

Due to bands pumped up but unable to perform on the first date of WWWY, Emo Nite was able to add more guests

to the show and “deliver a more special performance for everybody,” says Petracca. “We had four special guests from the bands hop up and perform songs during our DJ set.”

Those guests included Martin Johnson from Boys Like Girls and Tyson Ritter from The All-American Rejects, perhaps setting a precedent for more unexpected guests to show up at Zouk and hype the crowds than originally envisioned.

Emo Nite’s growth has been organic from the get-go, fueled by passion more than calculation. Travis Barker, Blackbear and Bring Me The Horizon have had notable appearances at Emo Nite L.A. Post Malone performing a My Chemical Romance cover there in June 2017 became a milestone in his upward trajectory.

With an extended schedule of monthly Zouk parties, Petracca and Freed have a chance to evolve an Emo Nite Las Vegas with its own flavor, where the faithful fly in from all over the country and beyond to commune regularly, reunite, reminisce and meet new friends.

The shared musical bond is almost spiritual. “I feel like it’s all based on good moral ground,” says Freed. “That’s the big thing. We’re not a religious organization, but we could be.”

Break out your cameras and tastebuds for a drinking adventure at The Cosmopolitan! Property mixologist Andrew Pollard—a star in the Vegas beverage industry—has created a slew of new cocktails at various venues in the property. Not only do these cocktails, many based off classic cocktails, taste delicious, they are exciting to look at.

“In developing all these drinks, I’m always thinking about what environment they’re served in,” Pollard says. “There’s that experiential component, and what evokes experience? That sense of escapism. You have a chance to have destination cocktails. They transport you, take you to a different place.”

We’ve highlighted some of the cocktails at four different venues: The

Chandelier, Ghost Donkey, Wicked Spoon and Vesper. Like the piña colada and the dark ’n’ stormy? Hit up The Chandelier. How about Manhattans? Visit Ghost Donkey. What about the gin and tonic or the mint julep? Head to Vesper. You down for a michelada? Try Wicked Spoon.

All these classic recipes have taken their place in the cocktail zeitgeist, but now The Cosmopolitan takes drinkers on a whole new taste experience with their twist on them.

“Come here and dare to be different,” Pollard says. “Take a chance. Try something different. Indulge in the experience. You can get anything you want anywhere else, but come here for the experience.”

Great Escape

The community of Lone Mountain is unlike any other in Southern Nevada, located immediately north of Summerlin and bordered on the west by the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. Some call it the Sedona of Summerlin, and it’s not hard to see why: With its large number of horse ranches and

natural terrain and parks, the area is an ideal retreat for those who love the energy of the Las Vegas Strip, but want to keep a sense of privacy and security.

Homes throughout this large community range from Spanish colonial and midcentury modern to luxury mini-estates by Blue Heron.

And a home has just recently become available here, one that’s large enough for big families and offers plenty of upgrades and great views.

This two-story, 5,417-square-foot home, listed by Kamran Zand of Luxury Estates International, features four bedrooms, four and a half baths and a four-car garage. This

home’s curb appeal is just stunning, featuring plenty of well-appointed landscaping and sharp, angular lines, all within a gated community.

As you make your way through the home, you’ll be struck by all the upgrades, which includes design touches balancing classic and modern, as well as all the latest technological conveniences, including an all-new kitchen with Monogram appliances, whole home audio inside and out, and Restoration Hardware chandeliers. It’s a perfect space to entertain large parties, with plenty

of easy, organic flow throughout the entire space.

All bedrooms here are en suite, so no matter where your family members are located, all have the ultimate in comfort and accommodation. In addition, there’s a formal dining room, office, flex room (which means it could be converted into a fifth bedroom) and home theater media room.

Outside, you’ll find your perfect oasis, complete with pool and spa, more rich landscaping and outdoor custom lighting system.

As they say in the real estate market, location is everything, and Lone Mountain has great access to so many fun escapes for the whole family. There’s Children’s Memorial Park and Durango Hills Park and plenty of hiking. In addition, you’ve got easy access to the I-95 and 215 freeways, meaning you could be in Downtown Summerlin (or the Strip) in minutes. –Ken Miller
