Curated Care

Spa offers customizability, quality and convenience— all in the comfort of your hotel room

Dating back to ancient times, the art of massage harnesses many techniques to heal, refresh and encourage relaxation. It’s medicine, and whether you’ve come to town to unwind or you need help recovering from last night, Lapis & Oak Spa and Salt Lounge brings the magic directly to you. Because what’s better than a massage? Not leaving your room to get one.

Even better, Lapis & Oak delivers an elevated in-room experience on many levels. To start, the spa’s massage therapists and aestheticians average 15 years of experience in their fields, providing the kind of top-of-the-line care that can only be mastered through commitment to the craft.

From the hands of these exceptionally skilled professionals, you’ll receive a custom massage which can include hot stone work, trigger point massage, stretching, lymphatic drainage massage, sports massage and more, all atop a heated and vibrational massage table that offers additional percussion therapy while your therapist works.

Not everyone has an in-depth understanding of massage techniques and terminology, which can make booking a custom massage seem challenging. Luckily, all you need to know is what hurts, aches

or pulls and what you want to be the result of your treatment. The rest? Leave it to the experts.

Before your massage, you’ll have a brief consultation with the therapist to go over aches, pains and personal wellness goals. After that, they’ll curate a selection of techniques to treat your body specifically. After all, your body is unique, and the massage that treats it should be tailored.

If in-room kneading isn’t what you’re needing, worry not. At its luxurious facility, Lapis & Oak offers custom facials and skin treatments, perfect for refreshing the skin and restoring natural glow.

Expect a combination of nutrient-rich organic skincare and advanced methods such as microdermabrasion and LED light therapy to leave your skin hydrated and smooth.

Also an in-spa service, the salt lounge features a halogenerator that releases microscopic salt particles into the air. Known for its bountiful array of health benefits, this inhalation treatment can provide improved breathing, reduced stress and a boost in fighting infections. –Em Jurbala

An Hour to Remember

We all love a good happy hour, a time to relax with friends and family (and sometimes coworkers) and sample the goodies available at that particular restaurant or bar. In the case of Jaleo by Jose Andrés in The Cosmopolitan, it’s actually sangria hour!

The newest sangria hour menu at the primarily tapas restaurant kicked off earlier this fall and introduced additional cocktails, such as the margarita Donostiarra, with arbol-infused blanco tequila Vida, mezcal, bay leaf and lime, plus the vaunted porron, a larger portion of which you are meant to lift, and, yes, pour into your mouth from as far away as possible. Now, that makes for a super-fun start to the night. You can find beer and wine by the glass, too, at an exceptionally reasonable price.

Order a variety of tapas to accompany your drinks, like the endibas (possibly my favorite), mini bites featuring orange, goat cheese and almonds on endive; patatas bravas with spicy tomato sauce; or the mini salmon cone with trout roe (these cones are treasured at Andre’s restaurants). And the Board and Bottle pairs either a selection of cured Iberico meats or one of cheese with an entire bottle of wine for $75.

The sangria hour menu is available only in the bar from 5-7 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and is very popular—I’ve been known to hang out half an hour before opening just to indulge! –Nina King

Brunch experience at Palms combines music and psychic mediums

Think back on some of the best brunches of your life. Odds are they included family or dear friends, and the experience became more about the fellowship than the food (or even the mimosas!). We all love brunch, this is true, but what we really look forward to is those we’ll be enjoying it with.

It’s in that vein that Palms has launched an entirely new concept for brunch at KAOS: You’re still joined by your loved one or friend—just not their corporeal being.

It’s Brunched By An Angel, and it’s a two-hour show and brunch experience featuring three psychic mediums:

Reginald Lewis, pictured, Loriann Mans and Christopher Allan. During the show (limited to 272 guests at a time to ensure an intimate experience), they will give readings to audience members.

Each show begins with a musical set and brunch, followed by a live gallery read. There are also VIP experiences available for eight tables per show.

Four-time Emmy Award-winning executive producer Shane Farley, who brought the production to Las Vegas, said, “This is a show that I have been imagining producing for many years. On many of the shows that I’ve produced in the past, I had the opportunity to book

and work with some of these amazing psychic mediums, and I have seen them completely blow away an audience with their unique gift. They can truly connect people with their deceased loved ones and seeing them help someone find peace and the pure joy that comes from the experience is hard to explain until you see it for yourself. The show is so unique, and the experience will be different each time that people can come see it over and over.” –Ken Miller

For the Fans

Mr. Las Vegas’ ‘Up Close and Personal’ is just that—and no two shows are the same

The last time I went to see Wayne Newton in his show, Up Close and Personal, he told a story that broke my heart, but shows a side of the entertainment industry that most of us never take the time to think about:

When Newton was 23 years old, he made an appearance on TV’s The Lucy Show. His appearance made such a splash that the networks executives approached Newton about starring in his own show. He was thrilled, but Lucille Ball asked him to see her before accepting the offer.

Owing a great debt to Ball for putting him on her show, Newton valued her opinion and advice. And her advice came in the form of a question: “Have you ever heard Jim Nabors sing?” Newton, who, like Nabors, had a beautiful singing voice but a bit of a high-pitched speaking voice, said he loved Jim Nabors’ singing voice. Ball’s followup question: “What is Jim Nabors mostly known for?” And the answer came back: Gomer Pyle, the stumbling, bumbling comedy character he played on television.

The message was clear to Newton: He could either be known for his voice (and massive talent on almost every instrument known to man) or for whatever character television came up for him. It wasn’t even a choice. And, as millions of his fans who have lined up to see him perform will attest, he made the right one.

Up Close and Personal is filled with such stories, and Newton rarely tells the same ones twice. That’s right—he’s got so many stories he could keep this show going for years, and no two would be the same. But those wanting to hear music, fear not: Newton is backed by a great band, and delivers some of the classics his fans can’t get enough of, like “Viva Las Vegas,” “Daddy Don’t You Run So Fast” and several others. He’s also occasionally joined by surprise guest stars.

So, to Mr. Las Vegas, who never turned his back on his fans, we say: Danke Schoen. –Ken Miller

Spa brings together luxurious treatments and specialty wellness theater offerings

Entering Awana Spa & Wellness may not bring an instant sense of peace and well-being, but those feelings are certain to follow after you experience the offerings at Resorts World Las Vegas.

Within the walls, you can choose a typical treatment or expand into a special event in the wellness theater. Currently, you’ll be able to enjoy the Art of Aufguss in the theater, where the Sauna Meister curates experiences based around the themes of relax, invigorate, playful or avant garde. These events must be booked in conjunction with the Fountain of Youth Passport (which also includes entry into the spa’s vitality pools, the crystal laconium room, Rain Walk and more) or with a spa treatment of 60 minutes or more.

Most do stretch more than 60 minutes, with each treatment aimed at producing a specific result. They include several Rawceuticals facials like orchid stem cell renewal, incorporating an aromatic ritual and the elements of glacier tonic, moss extract and orchid stem cells to help reduce the signs of aging.

Massage treatments include ones designed to aid in restfulness, in grounding, in rejuvenation and more. The Himalayan Salt Stone massage will give you a sense of relaxation, with warmed salt-crystal stones exfoliating the skin as the massage targets stress. –Nina King

Expanding the Empire

If a celebrity chef opens one restaurant in Las Vegas, that’s a big deal. Two? Amazing. Three? You’re entering the realm of legend. Gordon Ramsay, the man who brought the world Hell’s Kitchen, as well as countless other bingeable reality shows, has now opened his sixth restaurant on the Las Vegas Strip— Ramsay’s Kitchen by Gordon Ramsay—and it’s a stunner, with a welcoming décor and a menu that will have Ramsay’s fans smiling.

Start with a specialty cocktail like the Spiced Pear, featuring Absolut

pear vodka, pear liqueur, cinnamon-cardamom vanilla syrup and lemon, or the Boston Inferno, made with Maker’s Mark bourbon, Smoke Wagon small-batch whiskey, dark maple syrup and Angostura bitters. Then make your way to delights like tuna tartare (accompanied by wonton crisps), jumbo lump crab bake, served with citrus herb aioli and frisée salad, or pan-seared scallops (a Ramsay specialty), served with house-cured pork belly, apricot puree, pomegranate, orange and chicken jus. Of course, there’s beef

Wellington (we can’t get enough of this Ramsay classic!), but your main can also include crispy salmon with purple cauliflower puree, harissa roasted cauliflower and beurre blanc.

Sticky toffee pudding, another Ramsay staple, will satisfy for your dessert, but you can also opt for the Eton Mess, a delicious baked meringue, cranberry jam, Chantilly cream, winter citrus and pistachio dust. –Ken Miller

Before Dominic Ritzer was the vice president of marketing for Tao Group, which owns Marquee at The Cosmopolitan, he was just a guest at the nightclub. “Marquee was my actual favorite place to party,” says the Las Vegas native. “It was the best place to have fun and go out.” Now he’s in charge of throwing the parties at Marquee.

Ritzer has had a successful career in marketing, working across the country and abroad; he also helped launch top nightclubs in Vegas, including Hakkasan and Omnia. In 2018, he jumped

on board at Marquee, and since his arrival he’s been keeping people in party paradise at the nightclub. He recently launched Night Circus, one of the club’s dopest parties, held every Sunday.

“It’s one of my favorite parties we do with Tao Group,” Ritzer says. “I was listening to a William Clark Green song, ‘Ringling Road.’ The lyrics to that song have always reminded me of the nightlife industry—the song is about the characters that work at the circus, so that whole circus hook on it is, ‘Come to the greatest party on earth.’ … We really

went at it with every bell and whistle.” (This Sunday, Dec. 11, Night Circus becomes Night Rodeo for NFR fans.)

Now that Ritzer and his team are responsible for throwing the parties at Marquee, it’s like he’s come full circle. “Marquee is on the 50-yard line of the Strip, but it’s over 10 years old and we’re still in the top three (clubs). All the events we do you can always expect a party, somewhere you want to end up. … When you come here, I hope people had the same experience I did. It’s just a fun place to be.” –Kiko Miyasato

Barry’s Downtown Prime is the perfect spot for NFR attendees

ATTENDEES OF THIS YEAR’S

Wrangler National Finals Rodeo will no doubt find themselves downtown during the festivities—many of the best country acts around will be performing at the Golden Nugget (see feature on p. 32).

And, no doubt, many of those same attendees will find themselves famished and in need of sustenance to continue attending each and every performance. No worries! Head over a few yards to Circa Resort & Casino (by way of the Fremont Street Experience) and get in line for Barry’s Downtown Prime, one of the best steakhouses in the area.

Yes, there’s a menu, and it’s packed with deliciousness, but chef Barry S. Dakake’s sense of adventure is alive and well here. As he explained to Las Vegas Magazine upon opening in 2020, “If you come into my restaurant and you can’t find something that you like, shame on me! And, if you can’t find it, you can ask and I can make it!” And believe us, if Dakake takes a special liking to you, he’ll probably bring something o the menu out anyway.

Everything about Barry’s makes you feel comfortable, from the dark woods to cushy booths and leather chairs, all lit with pendant lighting and chandeliers overhead. It all evokes an old steakhouse

feel while still maintaining some modern touches. It’s the perfect atmosphere for enjoying some signature cocktails, and Dakake is always experimenting and updating his selection. Current highlights include the BDTP Old-Fashioned, perked up here with Chinese five-spice syrup, chocolate and cherry bark and vanilla bitters, and the refreshing Starred Struck Lovers, made with Casamigos blanco tequila, aloe liqueur, orgeat, lime juice, rose water and cucumber. Appetizers are a must, with a wild combination of flavors in delights like a bone marrow luge atop a bed of fettuccine Alfredo topped with Parmigiano Reggiano, tru e butter and Madeira wine. If you want to keep the beef theme going, it doesn’t get much better—or eye-catching—than the 46-ounce Mishima Reserve tomahawk ribeye, sourced from Mishima Reserve Farms in Seattle. This baby will serve the entire table, and don’t forget to add on sides like George’s Cream Corn (named after then-Palms owner George Maloof when Dakake worked at Palms), tater tots topped with aged cheddar cheese, crispy bacon and scallions, and whole Maine lobster mac ’n’ cheese, served in a hollowed-out lobster tail.

If you’re more of a seafood fan, the Dover sole is a treat for both the eyes

and tastebuds, sautéed and served with baby gulf shrimp, lemon and butter sauce. And the “organic” fire chicken, accompanied by sliced red Fresno chilis, jalapeños, lemon and rosemary au jus, is rich and delicious, and one of the best versions in all of downtown.

Still hungry? Get out your phone, activate “video” and experience the Tahitian baked Alaska, surrounded by an Italian meringue and fired up at your table with a brandy flambé. Slice through to reveal layers of chocolate, Tahitian vanilla and strawberry ice cream.

Ray Wylie Hubbard

Every year during Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, the Golden Nugget presents a concert series that places the pulse of country music in the heart of Downtown Las Vegas. A stay on Fremont Street during NFR creates proximity to The Showroom for the Golden Nugget’s slate of shows, but this year kicked o with scheduled dates by legendary acts Lonestar, Tanya Tucker and Marty Stuart . The series continues with heavy-hitters Ronnie Milsap, Tracy Lawrence, Aaron Tippin and the Bellamy Brothers before Jamey Johnson steps up to the plate Friday night for the fi nal performance. (All performances are at 10 p.m. at The Showroom. For tickets, go to goldennugget.com.)

Rodeo

First, Ray Wylie Hubbard returns on Sunday. Hubbard is an outlaw in the tradition of Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson, with a knack for storytelling and a preponderance of tales to tell. He has a way with lyrics on the level of Warren Zevon and a road warrior’s perspective that could only come from the Lone Star State.

Hubbard has been inducted to halls of fame by both the Texas Heritage Songwriters’ Association and Austin Music Awards in recognition for a career that began in earnest when Jerry Je Walker recorded his early ’70s composition “Up Against the Wall, Redneck Mother.” He has since written for Jennings and Lucinda Williams, and was named Songwriter of the Year for 2017-2018 by readers of The Austin Chroni-

cle. Inspired by symbolist poetry, psychedelic insight, the Devil and God (as he writes on 2012 song “Lazarus”), Hubbard is part of the vanguard of Americana musicians.

Monday night belongs to Milsap. The legendary piano man may have retired from extensive touring, but he’s far from being inactive. Milsap’s songs were ubiquitous on country

music radio beginning in the late ’70s with songs such as “Smoky Mountain Rain,” “I Wouldn’t Have Missed It for the World” and “Lost in the Fifties Tonight (In the Still of the Night),” securing him a place the pantheon of Nashville’s fi nest.

Milsap was educated as a pianist at North Carolina State School for the Blind before becoming key-

boardist for J.J. Cale. Milsap began recording singles in 1965 and released his debut self-titled album in 1971. He won his fi rst of six GRAMMYs for 1974’s “Please Don’t Tell Me How the Story Ends” and had a string of No. 1 hits, many of which he re-recorded with contemporary country stars on his 2019 album The Duets. An opportunity to hear Milsap sing “What a Di erence You’ve Made in My Life,” “It Was Almost Like a Song” and “Any Day Now” live is not one to be missed.

It’s been 30 years since Tuesday-night headliner Lawrence hit No. 1 on the country singles chart with the title track from 1991 album Sticks and Stones. The neo-traditionalist honky tonker had four Top 10 country singles from that album, which had to be delayed due to Lawrence being shot four times prior to its release while protecting a friend from assault. The number four would figure prominently again for Lawrence when “Can’t Break It to My Heart,” “If the Good Die Young,” “My Second Home” and the title track his 1993 album Alibis all became No. 1 country singles.

Lawrence managed to not get shot again but could not avoid having more chart successes. Recent setlists include hits such as “Texas Tornado,” “Time Marches On” and “Better On, Better O ” as well as a medley of songs by Charlie Daniels, Charlie Pride and Kenny Rogers. The third volume in Lawrence’s three-album Hindsight 2020 Volume 3: Angelina, features a heaping helping of re-recorded early hits plus original material.

Tippin takes the stage Wednesday night with a set of songs highlighted by his No. 1 country hits “That’s as Close as I’ll Get to Loving You,” “Kiss This” and the song that started his rise to success, “There Ain’t Nothin’ Wrong with the Radio.” The latter was the big hit from his 1991

debut album, You’ve Got to Stand for Something, which came out a year after his potential as a live performer was discovered by Nashville.

Tippin was already established as a songwriter, but his blue-collar beginnings informed his songs and made him a favorite among the working class.

The song “You’ve Got to Stand for Something” became a patriotic anthem during the Gulf War as well as laying down Tippin’s common-sense philosophy on life. Patriotism would inspire Tippin’s concert mainstay “Where the Stars and Stripes and the Eagle Fly,” which was a No. 2 country single and became Tippin’s biggest crossover hit.

The Bellamy Brothers, who headline Thursday, had nothing but crossover hits during their heyday in the ’70s. At a time when being

Ronnie Milsap Bellamy Brothers

siblings gave musical acts an edge, David and younger brother Howard were pop-radio gold with hits that became part of the Me Decade’s musical canon. “If I Said You Had a Beautiful Body Would You Hold It Against Me,” a musical symbol of the singles-bar era, contained both a double entendre in its title and south-of-the-border sonic seasoning that made the song unforgettable. “Let Your Love Flow” and “Do You Love as Good as You Look” fit nicely on playlists with Eagles and early Doobie Brothers, while deeper cuts “Old Hippie” and “Redneck Girl” remain concert favorites.

Johnson is the personification of a country music concert favorite. The singer-songwriter has 11 Grammy nominations under his belt, and

two Song of the Year awards apiece from the Country Music Awards and Academy of Country Music. As a songwriter, Johnson has provided hits for Willie Nelson, Trace Adkins and Merle Haggard.

As a solo recording artist, Johnson can reduce listeners to tears on tracks such as “Angel” from 2008’s That Lonesome Song then celebrate the good life in “Place Out on the Ocean.” Johnson’s output has been sparse for the last decade, but a duet with singer Julie Roberts released in September titled “Music City’s Killing Me” may provide clues as to why. Regardless, he’s an authentic country music outlaw in a Kris Kristo erson and Willie Nelson way, and more than worthy of the climactic Friday-night concert slot.

Get in the holiday spirit at ‘A Very Terry Christmas’

One thing you have to understand about Terry Fator: The man lives for Christmas! As much as you love the mistletoe, the carols, the tinsel, the trimmed tree, trust us, this man loves it more than you do. As many Christmas specials as you’ve seen over the years—Frosty the Snowman, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and A Charlie Brown Christmas—Fator has seen more. He has assimilated all the entertainment world has to o er during the holidays, and he uses it all in his immensely entertaining A Very Terry Christmas at New York-New York.

Fator’s fans no doubt know his act very well by now: Quite simply put, he’s the best combination of ventriloquist, singer and imperson-

ator the Strip currently o ers, and his ever-growing cast of characters reflects the mind-blowing amount of voices this man can summon— without moving his lips! Oh, and did we mention he’s funny, too? And his Christmas gift to everyone is a show that’s guaranteed to put you in a yuletide mood. Heck, we’d go so far as to suggest that even cynics will be won over by Fator’s seasonal shenanigans.

New YorkNew York 866.606.7111

That means you’ll hear chestnuts like “Winter Wonderland,” “Sleigh Ride,” “White Christmas” and more sung by voices you’ll clearly recognize (Fator does it all, everything from Garth Brooks and

David Bowie to Michael Jackson and Justin Bieber). Expect to see Maynard Thompkins, who Fator introduces as the world’s greatest Elvis impersonator, warbling “Blue Christmas”; Apollo legend Julius doing his best Barry White in covering “Dreidel, Dreidel, Dreidel”; and Duggie, a slacker supreme, singing “The Night Before Christmas” like you’ve never heard it before. You might even catch a glimpse of some of Fator’s other famous friends, from Walter T. Airdale, a Nashville vet who’s keen to remind Fator—and the audience—about how many wives he’s had (trust us, it’s a lot, and it seems to keep growing as the show goes on!) and hot mama Vikki the Cougar to Wrex the Crash Test Dummy (who tries not to fall apart onstage) and, of course, Winston the Impersonating Turtle, who’s just the cutest little thing ever. But Fator’s show has evolved beyond just unique puppet creations. Over the years, Fator has expanded his repertoire to include likenesses of the real thing he imitates, including Bieber, Jackson, Bowie,

38 | 12.4.22 Las Vegas Magazine Photos by Denise Truscello

Elton John, Paul McCartney, Willie Nelson and Justin Timberlake. Part of the fun of a Fator show is you never really know who will show up from night to night—the possibilities seem endless.

And then there’s that humor we talked about earlier. Duggie, a big

fan of, um, plants, will introduce you to a new holiday that’s an adjunct to Christmas: Juana. (We’ll let that sink in a bit, as we’re sure you’ll figure out the rest.)

Fator has come a long way since winning the second season of America’s Got Talent more than a

decade ago, but as his Christmas show illustrates, some things never change. The finale of A Very Terry Christmas may make you reflect; it may make you cry. Because even though it takes place in Vegas, with all the Vegas style Fator can muster, it’s still quintessentially Christmas.

The Red Rock Country Club is, quite possibly, the height of luxury in Las Vegas, a sprawling, masterplanned community where elegance exudes from every corner. It’s host to a 7,001-yard, par-72 private mountain course and a 6,883-yard, par-72 public arroyo course, both designed by Arnold Palmer and featuring

rolling fairways, dramatic water features and multitiered greens. And a home has become available in this desert-based paradise, one with plenty of room for both large families and large get-togethers.

Listed by Ivan Sher of IS LUXURY, this two-story, 5,037-squarefoot estate oozes luxury, spread out

across five bedrooms, six bathrooms and a three-car garage (with resin flooring). It backs to the country club golf course, guaranteeing great views and “oohs” and “aahs” from company. This Spanish mission-inspired villa is completely remodeled, and looks like it was just built. It’s a showcase from start to finish.

As you walk through a private courtyard (which has indoor-outdoor wood flooring and a cozy fireplace) and through the front door, you’ll be struck by a great room with living room and dining areas, punctuated by fireplaces, vaulted ceilings, porcelain-lined walls, pocket doors and so much more.

Outdoors is just as impressive, with covered patio, interior courtyard, mature landscaping, attached casita and resort-style, multilevel pool complete with hot tub and fountain, as well as multilevel

seating areas. An outdoor kitchen with bar seating is tucked under the covered patio, completing the year-round desert living experience. No matter whether you prefer to spend most of your time indoors or outdoors, you can’t go wrong here.

Other interior highlights include a chef-style commercial-grade kitchen, which includes a six-burner cooktop with grill, farmhouse sink, Sub-Zero refrigerator/freezer units and large, wrap-around island with bar seating. There’s also a family room featuring a wall of windows

that allow for maximum visibility of golf course and mesa ridge views.

All the bedrooms have plenty of space, and the master suite includes a sitting area, fireplace and a private covered balcony with spectacular views. The bathroom contains a soaking tub, walk-in shower and walk-in custom closet. Two bedrooms on the first and second floor include private baths. –Ken Miller
