Hitting

New Beginnings for a New Year

Las Vegas is unlike anywhere else in the world. This city is an ever-changing, electrifying combination of sights, sounds, tastes, experiences and feelings that one can only describe once they have been here. I am thrilled to be taking on the role of publisher for this outstanding publication that reflects all the best parts of the city that I call home. As someone who grew up here, it gives me so much pride to help show you what Las Vegas is all about. This issue marks our fi rst of the year; it’s also the 4th annual Hall of Fame issue. The Hall of Fame class of 2023 represents some of the incredible things that Las Vegas has to o er. These 10 honorees have made a tremendous impact on the city, and we are delighted to recognize them and share them with you. To make it even more special, the 2023 inductees were all chosen by Hall of Fame alumni, including famous performers Carrot Top and Wayne Newton. (I’d also like to give a special mention to our sponsor, Aristocrat Gaming, and Lifetime Achievement Award honoree, Cynthia Kiser Murphey.) While it may not be feasible to visit every place on the list in one trip, while you are here, I highly recommend you experience at least a couple of the iconic honorees you’ll be reading about. I guarantee you’ll have a memorable time.

As you fl ip through these pages, I hope you are fi lled with as much excitement as I am for 2023. The year ahead is bound to be an exhilarating one, fi lled with new openings and places that will no doubt change and impact our city, and I am sure you will want to come visit us again. With that, enjoy your stay.

Cheers!

Like to Laugh?

This week’s stand-up roster is bursting with talent

Las Vegas attracts incredible comedians and has for many years. And if this week’s roster is a sign of anything, 2023 will be no different.

You may know Wayne Brady from his extensive catalog of work as a TV personality, actor, singer and game show host, and this week you can enjoy another of his talents: stand-up comedy. The beloved Let’s Make a Deal host, Whose Line Is It Anyway? regular and How I Met Your Mother costar takes The Mirage stage on Jan. 14 as part of the Aces of Comedy series that continuously brings top-notch comedians to the city. The five-time Emmy Award winner packs unmatchable talent with impeccable improv and quick quips shining bright.

Another adored actor and comedian takes the stage a bit further south as Brad Garrett headlines his eponymous comedy club at MGM Grand, Jan. 12-13. The Everybody Loves Raymond actor opened Brad Garrett’s Comedy Club in 2012 and performs frequently along with an ever-rotating lineup of talented comedians. Known for his television and film roles, the comedy icon brings his recognizable deep voice and hilarious jokes to the

stage. This week, you can catch Garrett performing with DJ Demers and Omid Singh, two jokesters you surely won’t want to miss.

Rising to mainstream popularity as a top 10 finalist and fan favorite on season 13 of America’s Got Talent, Vicki Barbolak brings relatable, loveable humor to Jimmy Kimmel’s Comedy Club at The Linq on Jan. 10. Coining the term “Trailer Nasty,” Barbolak chronicles her unpredictable life from being the child of a former NFL player to living in a posh San Diego trailer park. Beginning her career at 38, Barbolak decided to take a stand-up comedy class that aided her realization that spreading laughter provided her great joy. A few years of open-mic nights later, the comedian found herself being mentored by Mitzi Shore, owner of the Comedy Store, who helped her develop the comedy fans know and love.

Comedian and writer Forrest Shaw is set to perform at Comedy Cellar at Rio from Jan. 9-15. Featured on Conan and Live at Gotham, this former marine biologist co-wrote and starred in award-winning web series Labor Days Additionally, Shaw co-hosts the I Don’t Know About That podcast with Jim

12 | 1.8.23 Las Vegas Magazine Spotlight Courtesy photo

Jefferies and The Mermen Podcast with Dave Williamson. Making light of life’s heavier topics, Shaw explores his real-life struggles with health and gambling addiction, as well as more playful topics like qualms with human anatomy and cats. Definitely cats.

Delivering bold, honest comedy to the L.A. Comedy Club at The STRAT Thursday through Monday, resident headliner Butch Bradley combines stand-up and improv for one hilarious show. Having performed around the globe, Bradley uses his likable personality and enthralling storytelling ability to win crowds over. Don’t let his personable nature fool you, though; Bradley often delivers jokes with a touch of honest cynicism throughout his set. His stand-up special, Butch Bradley: From Las Vegas, was released in March 2021, and he will appear in the upcoming biopic movie Reagan, starring Dennis Quaid.

And the best part? This isn’t an all-extensive list. There are so many high-quality comedians in town this week that you could see a new performer each night—possibly even two.

Witty Wizardry

Usually when you see the tag “family-friend entertainment,” it means the show will appeal to kids, but not necessarily adults. Nothing could be further from the truth when it comes to The Mac King Comedy Magic Show, a long-running romp that will have everyone in the audience laughing. It’s infectiously fun, and we can almost guarantee your kids will be lining up at the end to either buy their own magic set or meet the man himself (King always meets with his fans after every show).

King himself is very unassuming—he arrives onstage in a checkered suit that seems just a bit too big for him. But, as you’ll soon discover, there are plenty of jokes and visual gags that involve this suit. It’s as much a part of the show as King himself, and impossible to forget.

King’s “aw, shucks” presentation is meant to disarm you, as the illusions he performs will have your jaw on the floor, using props ranging from a rope to a fishing pole to a camping tent. He’s not flashy or

boastful; the feats he achieves feel very matter-of-fact. There’s a very good chance you’ll get back to your hotel room and think, “Wait a minute—how did he DO all that?”

Audience participation is a big part of the show as well. If you’re called up onstage and can keep a straight face in the onslaught of King’s hilarious routines, more power to you! (We certainly couldn’t.)

Gelling With Fans

With a timeless sound and an unforgettable debut single, Collective Soul has captured the attention of a whole new generation of music fans, releasing its latest album, Vibrating, nearly 30 years after its first. Their lineup has changed somewhat, but their dedication to craftsmanship, songwriting and hooks has not changed in the slightest. They’ll prove that when they perform this week at the recently reopened Pearl performance venue at Palms.

Radio listeners in 1994 no doubt remember the first time they heard

“Shine,” the Stockbridge, Georgia-based band’s first hit and a radio mainstay for most of that decade. Collective Soul would go on to record many more Top 40 hits, including “December,” “The World I Know,” “Where the River Flows,” “Heavy,” “Precious Declaration,” “Gel” and “Listen” among them, in the process becoming successful enough to start their own label, El Music Group, in order to maintain more control over their creative output.

Over the last 30 years, the band has performed at Woodstock 1994, opened

for bands like Aerosmith and Van Halen before embarking on their own as headliners, and has had several albums achieve platinum status (their self-titled album achieved triple platinum status). The current lineup of lead vocalist Ed Roland, rhythm guitarist Dean Roland, bassist Will Turpin, drummer Johnny Rabb and lead guitarist Jesse Triplett is sure to keep fans rocking into the Vegas night. –Ken Miller

World-renowned beer brand sets up its first Strip location

The BrewDog brand sprung from humble beginnings. It was just two guys from Fraserburgh in northwest Scotland bottling up some pretty-darned-tasty craft beer, but consumers quickly discovered it and drank it up. Just one year later the company expanded to the largest brewery in Scotland.

BrewDog also began exporting to Sweden, Japan and the United States, and by 2015 BrewDog set up its first brewery stateside in Columbus, Ohio. And the end of 2022

marked a big one for the brand, as it opened its first West Coast location, BrewDog Las Vegas.

“We are one of the most epic BrewDog locations I would say, second largest in the world—the other one being Waterloo (United Kingdom),” says Bernadine Griffin, BrewDog Las Vegas sales and events manager. “We have the most epic views of Las Vegas with 360-degree views on our rooftop terrace.”

And the views are definitely epic— you can see the lights of the Strip

and the valley beyond while enjoying lounge-like seating across the 30,000-square-foot terrace. Inside you’ll find plenty more seats, including bar-top spots. BrewDog also has a floor below called the Brewery Tap Room with made-to-order, pubstyle food including their popular

pizzas and wings. On this level there are games galore, including pinball, shuffleboard and board games. Back up on the rooftop terrace, guests can indulge in more elevated food, including a 1-pound ribeye, lobster mac and cheese and 8-ounce wagyu burger. BrewDog also offers plenty of vegan and vegetarian dishes, too, like the flame-grilled eggplant and cauliflower tacos.

And let’s not forget the beer. “We offer some of the most delicious,

crisp beers and cocktails you could want,” says Griffin. That includes three popular picks: Elvis Juice, “a very crisp IPA with a tangerine taste to it”; the Hazy Jane, another IPA with “very fruity, mango, tangerine, citrus flavors with a little bit of a haze, hence its name”; and Lost Lager, “a pilsner that’s a very crispy, clean refreshing beer.”.

When it comes to cocktails, there’s more than a dozen beer cocktails to choose from, but we

suggest starting with a classic and tasty pick-me-up, the espresso martini with Absolut Vanilia vodka, fresh-brewed espresso, BrewDog Jet Black Heart stout and simple syrup. Or go total Vegas with the Punk Star martini with Absolut Vanilia vodka, passionfruit liqueur and sour mix with a glass of BrewDog’s Punk Star beer on the side. Don’t fret about what other beers to try—BrewDog has 96 taps on hand!

The vibe of the place is aided by music pumping through the speakers on both levels, and guests can enjoy live DJs on the weekends and special events with live bands playing on the terrace. With the hockey and football playoffs right around the corner, this will surely be a top spot to cheer on your fave team.

If you can’t decide where to go today or tonight, put BrewDog on the top of your list—you won’t be disappointed. –Kiko Miyasato

For one extended weekend each year the streets of Downtown Las Vegas are transformed into a macro-menagerie of cultural exploration for Life is Beautiful, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. It’s a true love letter to the city, featuring multiple concert stages, art installations, educational components and a downtown vibe that only Las Vegas can provide.

While larger in size and scope than a boutique hotel, The Cosmopolitan has an inherent spirit of independence and luxury that sets it apart from its neighbors. From steakhouse STK and variety show OPM to Marquee Nightclub and the awe-inspiring, multi-level lounge The Chandelier, The Cosmopolitan has a nearly infinite number of reasons to never leave the property.

As far as slices of heaven amidst the hustle and bustle of the Strip go, the Bellagio Conservatory & Botanical Gardens is unsurpassed. When Cirque du Soleil debuted in Las Vegas with Mystère at Treasure Island 30 years ago, variety shows existed, but nothing like this, an omnibus of acrobats, dancers, comics, costumes and pageantry. Nothing would ever be the same. Mystère celebrated its 13,000th performance in August, and still feels as fresh and vital as the day it arrived.

With its art deco concept that paid homage to the Hoover Dam and iconic bell tower rising 170 feet, The Smith Center for the Performing Arts instantly changed the face of arts and culture in Las Vegas upon opening in 2015, hosting shows like Book of Mormon and Kinky Boots and performers like Wynton Marsalis and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

It wasn’t playoff upstarts Golden Knights or Marc Davis’ Raiders who won the first championship of Las Vegas’ professional sports era. It was the Las Vegas Aces, who earned a Sept. 21 parade on the Strip that stopped traffic in both directions after besting the Connecticut Suns in four games to bring home the WBNA Commissioner’s Cup.

Shopping online? Please! Town Square Las Vegas has remained consistently vital as a place to shop in real life since it opened in 2007. Anchor tenants such as Apple Store and Guitar Center, an 18-screen movie theater, and drink-and-dining options such as Blue Martini and Yard House helped made it—and keep it—a hit.

A Letter from the Lifetime Achievement Award Sponsor:

While all leaders have the potential to make a meaningful impact, there are a select few that forge ahead of the pack to leave a long-lasting impression on their industry. Cynthia Kiser Murphey’s career is a prime example of what it means to create a legacy over the course of a career.

At Aristocrat Gaming, we’re honored to join with Las Vegas Magazine to pay tribute to Cynthia’s lifetime of achievement and the revolutionary efforts she has brought to the hospitality industry as a true trailblazer.

Cynthia founded one of the gaming industry’s first DE&I programs, which trained more than 40,000 “Diversity Champions.” This bold and innovative thinking continues to influence the industry and us at Aristocrat, elevating the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion in business success. She has inspired countless individuals in the gaming industry, many of which may not worked with her directly. Leaders like Cynthia continue to pave the way for a new era in the way we work, and ways to support all employees to reach their full potential.

We are grateful to recognize Cynthia Kiser Murphey: brave, pioneer, influential, tenacious, innovator, risk-taker, gamechanger. From all of us at Aristocrat Gaming, congratulations!

Cynthia Kiser Murphey has spent a lifetime making a difference in the lives of others. It’s an attribute that serves her well in her current position as general manager of San Manuel’s Palms Casino Resort.

The Kansas City native studied hotel management at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, receiving both a bachelor’s degree in Hotel & Restaurant Management and a master’s degree in Hotel Administration. She held multiple leadership positions at MGM Resorts International, helping to open three megaresorts in multiple jurisdictions as a key member of the senior leadership team.

In 2008, she was named president and chief operating officer of New York-New York, and over the next 12 years she oversaw many positive changes, from refurbishments to the 2,000-room property to leading the resort’s activations establishing an indoor and outdoor multi-use destination. She served as chief executive officer to a large benefits fund prior to joining the San Manuel team.

Through all this, Kiser Murphey has focused on developing people. She accomplished this by founding one of the gaming industry’s first diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives, which trained and certified more than 40,000 “Diversity Champions.”

She has personally mentored hundreds of employees, including women, people of color and members of the LGBTQ community, into industry leadership roles. She’s also served as founding sponsor of the veterans’

employee network group and has served for more than 20 years as a trustee to the Unite Here National Fund, which provides health benefits for hospitality industry employees.

It’s one thing to say you want to change people’s lives. It’s another thing entirely to actually do it, all while helping to bring Las Vegas’ gaming and hotel industry to the next level.
