A Crazy Good Time

This is always one of our favorite weeks of the year. Not only does it contain St. Patrick’s Day, it’s the start of March Madness. Head to almost any Irish-themed bar on St. Patrick’s Day in Las Vegas and you’re bound to fi nd fantastic bands, plenty of fellowship and some great deals on drinks and food (“Get Craic(ing),” p. 24); and March Madness practically takes over the entire city. Your favorite Strip property is ready for you and your crew to have the time of your lives while you’re here (“A Slam Dunk,” p. 14).

But there’s another reason to be excited this week—Las Vegas Magazine got an exclusive interview and photo shoot with DJ Pauly D to promote his residency at Marquee nightclub at The Cosmopolitan (“Keeping It Lit!” p. 32). It’s a fascinating look into his process, his plans for the future ... and his pet peeve! Defi nitely check it out.

Speaking of live entertainment, get your tickets to three great concerts this week: Up-and-coming country superstar Riley Green performs at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas (“Ducks and Trucks,” p. 12); Bonnie Raitt visits The Venetian fresh o her Grammy win for “Just Like That” (“True Talent,” p. 18); and Stevie Nicks brings her ridiculously good catalog of classics to T-Mobile Arena (“Dream Come True,” p. 20).

Obviously you’ll be hitting a restaurant or two as part of your Vegas vacation, but we’ve got two in particular you will want to check out this week: FUHU at Resorts World Las Vegas, an Asian restaurant that has a little bit of everything (“Tease Your Tastebuds,” p. 21), and Margaritaville at Flamingo, where you’ll want to waste away for a while (“Back on the Beach,” p. 28).

So fi ll out that bracket, grab a green beer and sit back and enjoy one of the most enjoyable weeks of the year. Maybe we’ll see you there!

Ducks and Trucks

Country star brings Alabama authenticism—and reverence for his grandfathers—to Las Vegas performance

Riley Green fans that make annual pilgrimages to Las Vegas for St. Patrick’s Day are extra lucky this year, as the Academy of Country Music’s 2020 New Artist of the Year brings his brand of ’90s-inspired down-home country to a multidate tour of small venues to the city that never sleeps before going on to support Luke Combs on a series of stadium concerts.

Green has played his share of fairgrounds, festivals and arenas, but the run of stadium shows is next-level for a performer who began his career playing at his grandfather’s Golden Saw Music Hall in the 34-year-old’s hometown of Jacksonville, Ala.

Green’s reverence for both his grandfathers inspired hits such as “That’s What I’ve Been Told” and “I Wish Grandpas Never Died,” with the spirit of Merle Haggard adding creative guidance and earthy grit as well. Green’s lyrics spill from him in what sounds like a flow of free association, coming up with nuggets like, “I wish country music still got played on country radio” on “Grandpas” that make audiences go nuts live as they sing the line back to him.

Lyrics that should sound like tropes come off as clever embedded in Green’s reams of rhymes. “I wouldn’t be who I am today if it wasn’t for a short-bed Chevrolet” he sings in “If It Wasn’t for Trucks.” He’s quick enough to twist a phrase on the fly in a live setting

and make a reference to an audience’s hometown.

Green has Steve Earle’s authenticity combined with the drive of the quarterback he was at Jacksonville State University. The road to Nashville led north after college, although Green would make a detour on reality series Redneck Island before beginning his recording career. His 2019 album Different ’Round Here made the music industry stand up and take notice with songs such as the title track and “There Was This Girl” becoming his most popular streaming songs after “Grandpas.”

Behind the Bar from 2021 included “If It Wasn’t for Trucks” and “That’s What I’ve Been Told,” while last year’s recording output was limited to acoustic single “Hell of a Way to Go.” Opening for Combs seems like the beginning of a new career arc, with the theater tour the calm before the storm.

Continuing ascension probably won’t change Green much, though. A dedicated hunter, he includes duck calls in his line of merchandise and goes by “rileyduckman” on Instagram. It should not be too surprising to hear a chorus of duck calls from the audience at a show. In fact, it would probably make him feel very much at home. –

A Slam Dunk

Celebrate college hoops in style all over Las Vegas

It’s the best feeling in the world— that moment when your 23 carefully considered March Madness bracket choices have not been completely destroyed by all the upsets to come. No matter how many times your hopes have been dashed, you always look forward to the beginning of the NCAA Division 1 men’s basketball tournament. And Las Vegas has plenty of venues where you can enjoy the chaos in style.

Head downtown to Circa Las Vegas ’ Stadium Swim complex for Mania Under the Sun, where the seating arrangements are limitless. Bring the whole gang and opt for everything from general admission to the owner’s suite—there are no bad viewing angles here, thanks to the facility’s 143-foot HD screen. Don’t forget to bring your swimwear, as Stadium Swim contains six pools and two spas on two levels. Tickets start at $20.

Westgate Las Vegas ’ Hoops Central promises to pack the International Theater (no limit on group size), with tickets starting at $45. Buckets of beer are $35 ($30 for domestic), and plenty of your favorite snacks will be on hand, from popcorn to nachos.

The viewing party at the Grand Ballroom of Golden Nugget is open to the public, but for a guaranteed

seat (plus some tasty food and drink), opt for VIP tickets. Prices range from $129-$599, depending on the day, and each comes with four free food items and five free drink tickets. Act quickly!

One of the Strip’s hottest properties hosts one of the hottest parties—Hoops & Hops (now in its 12th year) at The Cosmopolitan’s Belmont Ballroom, featuring wallto-wall screens, hardwood basketball court with regulation hoop and complimentary games like Super Shot. Packages range from $150 to $300 and include options like open bar and a gourmet buffet.

Resorts World Las Vegas gets in on the action with Battle of the Brackets parties at both Eight Lounge and Gatsby’s Cocktail Lounge. Eight will offer cigar and beverage packages, while Gatsby’s serves up a huge array of champagnes and signature cocktails.

At The Linq Hotel , Buddy’s Jersey Eats serves up Mad Specials for the occasion—six wings for $15, 10 wings for $20 and Nacho Fries (waffle fries topped with spicy chili cheese sauce, bacon, scallions, cilantro, queso fresco and jalapeño) for $14. –Ken Miller

Game On

The arcade lives in on in a big way at Strip property

It’s good to have a go-to place to dine in Las Vegas, a show to see in mind and a favorite table game. It’s also good to know the locations of video game arcades on the Strip. Some are hidden in a corner of a resort or connected to another attraction. The Arcade at Horseshoe, easy to find and expansive at 7,000 square feet, stands on its own in the center of the Strip.

Horseshoe Las Vegas occupies the address formerly belonging to Bally’s at the southeast corner of Las Vegas

Boulevard and Flamingo Road. Inside Horseshoe Las Vegas is a food court, and near that food court is the modern vision of a video game arcade with more than 80 options illuminated by neon glow.

Traditional favorites such as SkeeBall and air hockey vie for attention with virtual entertainment inspired by King Kong and Mission: Impossible

Shoot hoops at a Rock the Rim station. Discover how Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is adapted into

an arcade feature. Claw for a prize with Big One Extreme. Whack a clown with Whack a Clown. Enter the House of the Dead, try Monster Drop or take a wild ride with Virtual Rabbids.

There are plenty of pints for parents who are less interested in pixels, but there’s nothing like a game of air hockey to make a grown-up feel like a kid again. –Matt

True Talent

Fresh off her Grammy win, the artist brings her roots-inspired catalog to Vegas

You don’t have to imagine Bonnie Raitt ’s surprise when she won the Grammy for Song of the Year in February. It was written on her face after First Lady Jill Biden announced “Just Like That” had been chosen over nominations for tracks by Beyoncé, Taylor Swift and Lizzo. Raitt left the ceremony with three Grammys, but her Song of the Year win provided the show’s most unexpected moment.

The title track of the most recent album by the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and reigning queen of slide guitar depicts a mother who meets the recipient of a donor organ from her deceased son. “The story was so simple and beautiful for these times,” she said to the audience. “And people have been responding to the song partly because of how much I love, and we all love John Prine.”

Raitt explained the late singer-songwriter’s music and ability “to tell a story from the inside” inspired “Just Like That,” which also won Best American Roots Song. Album opener “Made Up Mind” took Best Americana Performance honors for a career total of 13 Grammys. It had been a decade since she last took home a Best Americana Album award for 2012’s Slipstream. Last year she was given a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

Digital sales and streams for “Just Like That” exploded in the wake of her wins. It’s almost a repeat of the success of her breakthrough album, 1989’s Nick of Time, which swept the Grammys and permanently launched Raitt into the pantheon of legendary musicians.

Prine’s passing during the first wave of COVID not only inspired a Grammy-winning song but moved Raitt to write album highlight “Livin’ for the Ones,” an uptempo rouser about moving forward in the wake of loss. His influence is more apparent when Raitt covers his “Angel from Montgomery,” a song she recorded early in her career and has played more than any other in concert. Hopefully you’ll hear it at her Vegas shows this week. –Matt Kelemen

Dream Come True

Legend performs decades of classic songs in Vegas

Whether as part of one of the most iconic bands of all time or as a solo artist, Stevie Nicks stands as one of the most intriguing performers and personalities of her generation, a songwriter whose haunting singing voice still enchants decades later.

As a member of Fleetwood Mac, Nicks created some of the best songs of the last 50 years—“Landslide,” “Rhiannon” and “Dreams” are all listed in Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time list, as is “Edge of Seventeen,” one of her first solo releases. Between

both, Nicks has sold nearly 200 million albums worldwide.

Her persona has also been one of fascination to fans throughout the years, notably the perception of many that she’s a Wiccan (she’s not—let’s just lay that one to rest). She parlayed that fascination to her advantage on F/X anthology series American Horror Story, playing—what else?—a witch!

Throughout the years, Nicks has toured both solo and with Fleetwood Mac, becoming the first woman to have been inducted into the Rock and Roll

Hall of Fame twice. She’s also a part of Las Vegas’ entertainment history, performing to a sold-out crowd at the opening of Dolby Live at Park MGM in 2016. She’s truly one of entertainment’s few performers who could rest on laurels, but when you watch her perform, you really get the sense she’s never been one to take her legend for granted. –Ken

Brittagna Giordano

Serving up sounds and spirits

When Brittagna Giordano isn’t serving up sounds as a singer for her reggae ska band, pop rock band and female a capella trio, she’s serving up drinks at Oddwood at AREA15.

“I feel ... it’s like entertainment,” says the cocktail server. “I’m a singer and I play in bands, too, and I feel like everything that I use about performing, I relate that to the drink world. I do truly feel like you’re putting on a show for people. When you present a drink in front of someone, you add layers and visual elements, so people see things

with their eyes before they taste the drinks. That’s how you capture your audience—like when you’re on a stage.”

Being born and raised in Las Vegas, Giordano always knew she was going to work in the food and beverage industry; she decided to turn her attention to bartending. “I bought The Flavor Bible, a really awesome book,” Giordano says. “It opened the doors for me to play around with flavors and ingredients.” She took her creativity to The Cosmopolitan, where she helped open the hotel and where she cut her teeth

bartending. When she heard about AREA15 opening and that there was an opportunity to join the first drinking establishment, her interest was piqued— she’s been with Oddwood ever since. “I fell in love with this place,” she says.

Not only does Giordano serve cocktails, but she also collaborated with the bar team to create some of the drinks. “We play with presentation,” she says. “We light things on fire, play with smoke elements, dry ice, LED lights–anything you can dream up, we can concoct.” –Kiko

Margaritaville gives off the sun and sand vibe all day and night

Whether you’re a Parrothead or a city dweller, a visit to Margaritaville on your Vegas vacation will transport you to a beachy retreat. The entire restaurant at Flamingo embraces a laid-back island vibe, with grottoes, piers, and sand bidding you welcome. Inside, you’ll find seven bars and plenty of casual seating, with some booths nestled into

boats complete with fishing poles, lines stretched to the water, and a seaplane overhead.

The staff here is super friendly and happy to offer suggestions for the perfect beverage to start out your meal. Margaritaville is justly famous for its margarita selection, and the Perfect Margarita is the classic, with Margari-

taville gold and silver tequilas, triple sec, orange Curaçao and lime juice served on the rocks. The Who’s to Blame is simple and very tasty, with Margaritaville gold tequila, triple sec and house margarita mix—it’s a lot of frozen fun (OK, it does come on the rocks if you want). But there are plenty of other fabulous margaritas here, like the blueberry pomegranate margarita, with Margaritaville silver tequila and Cointreau, orange liqueur and blueberry-pomegranate purée. Or indulge in Margaritaville’s famous Boat Drinks. Each of those is

given a tongue-in-cheek tag, like the 5 O’Clock Somewhere, concocted of Margaritaville silver rum, Paradise Passion fruit tequila, Cruzan Hurricane Proof rum, orange and pineapple juices, sweet and sour and a little grenadine.

Don’t sip too quickly or the volcano eruption might startle you. This classic Margaritaville attraction was upgraded to a computer-enhanced show that makes lava flow over bar and table.

If you order a drink, you almost gotta get an appetizer, and the signature Volcano nachos are it. This enormous plate comes piled with corn tortilla chips, chili, shredded cheeses and queso-style cheese sauce—it’s the restaurant’s best-selling food item, and it’s big enough to feed your friends, your family, and any random strangers you might have invited along. If you need variety, try the appetizer trio, with hand-battered chicken tenders, Caribbean chicken egg rolls and spinach and artichoke dip. Can’t go wrong there.

Seafood dishes are big here (no surprise), and The Landshark Fish & Chips satisfies with hand-battered fish and fries; fish tacos serve up Landshark tempura-battered fish in flour shells, with guac, mango pico de gallo and grilled habanero cream sauce, for

a real kick; and crispy coconut shrimp with pineapple dipping sauce. Jimmy’s Jammin’ Jambalaya cooks up shrimp, Andouille sausage and chicken in a spicy broth.

You can grab a burger instead, and the cheddar BBQ burger is a solid choice, with mild cheddar cheese, applewood-smoked bacon and a housemade barbecue aioli. Sub in a veggie burger for a vegetarian option—that aioli

really elevates every bite. Going light? Grab a Southwest chicken salad for a flavor bomb of grilled chicken, black beans, fire-roasted corn and avocado along with other veggies, and a housemade sauce. That margarita you ordered earlier will come in handy to mellow out any spice. Dessert? Too full, you say? Nonsense. The key lime pie here delivers a citrusy mouthful that is delightful!

There are a few things you should know about DJ Pauly D: he’s a super-nice guy; he’s always hype; and when he’s behind the decks performing, he’s going to give you the party of your life. You can catch the DJ, reality TV star and Las Vegas celebrity behind

the decks during his residency at Marquee nightclub and dayclub at The Cosmopolitan this year, including his upcoming performance at the nightclub on Friday, March 17. He’ll keep the party train rolling throughout the month and has April and May dates on tap.

Las Vegas Magazine recently caught up with the DJ inside his workplace, Marquee nightclub, where he posed for our cameras and sat down to chat with us about his residency, his love for the city and what he has coming down the pike in 2023.

He also answered some fun questions, and some telling ones—revealing things like what his biggest pet peeve is, what his guilty pleasure is, what his biggest fear is and what he’d be doing if he wasn’t a DJ or celebrity. The Las Vegas local also offers up some great ways for visitors to enjoy the city he now calls home.

WOW,

IT’S BEEN 13 YEARS

SINCE THE FIRST TIME YOU PERFORMED IN LAS VEGAS?

Yeah, I know! And now I have the exact ... residency that I always wanted—so I call this my dream residency. It’s just a perfect fit for me (at Marquee).

AFTER 13 YEARS IN THIS CITY, WHAT DOES LAS VEGAS MEAN TO YOU?

The first time I came out here, it was everything that I imagined; everything I dreamed of. The billboards, the lights,

the dining—I loved that part of it. But I also love where I live. I live 20 minutes away from it all where the mountains are. I love hiking and being outdoors at Mount Charleston and Red Rock Canyon. You can go skiing, you can shoot guns, you can race cars. Everything you want to do in Las Vegas, you can do. I love it here. I haven’t left since I’ve been here. I want to keep rocking out here.

AND WHEN YOU’RE ROCKING THE CROWDS AT MARQUEE— WHAT IS IT LIKE; WHAT CAN

Nightlife photography courtesy of Tao Group Hospitality Photo at left by Christopher DeVargas; grooming by Imogene Marrone

PEOPLE EXPECT?

My show is big energy. Huge energy! My show is great vibes. (It’s) a little bit of everything because my crowd is so mixed, so I’m able to play open-format (music), so I’m playing a little bit of everything. It’s a lot of high-energy dance music, but also—I’ll hit ’em with

the hip-hop, I’ll hit ’em with rock, I’ll hit ’em with reggaeton, simply because people are coming from all over the world—all walks of life are coming to my shows, and I love that. Music is an international language—it’s what brings everyone together, and I have to set that vibe, set that mood and bring that

Las Vegas Magazine 3.12.23 | 37

memorable experience. That’s why I love music so much. I’ve seen what music does to people—it makes them happy and that’s why I love to do it.

DO YOU PLAY THE SAME SET FOR EACH PERFORMANCE? HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE YOU TO PUT A SET TOGETHER?

I’ve never made a set in my entire life. I have to play to the crowd. Obviously I group together certain music and I have

10:30 p.m. March 17, taogroup.com

to make sure to play the hits and the bangers. I have an idea of the first four songs I’m gonna play to start the night, but it’s really the crowd that takes me on the journey. I don’t know where I’m going next. Maybe the crowd isn’t reacting to dance music—so I gotta switch it up. In Vegas, there’s always different crowds, so sometimes I’ll think that I’ll be playing a whole house (music) night and then I end up playing a ... hip-hop night instead, because I have to play to the crowd. I love to do it; it keeps me on my toes.

WHAT’S IN STORE IN 2023?

It’s busy! I’m rocking the residencies. We’ve got the pools opening up. I’m doing Marquee nightclub, Marquee dayclub. Hopefully we’re going to film some of those performances. It’ll be really dope because it’ll be during filming of another season of Jersey Shore We’re actually filming another season as we speak.

THEY’RE FILMING YOU HERE IN LAS VEGAS FOR JERSEY SHORE?

Yes! It’s gonna be so cool; I love it! I love filming.

SO I’VE HEARD THAT YOU’RE THE NEW MR. VEGAS. TELL ME ABOUT IT.

Mr. Vegas—it’s about the vibe. I’m a touring DJ; I tour all over the world. But everyone comes to Las Vegas. So I want it to be known that when you come to Las Vegas, come see Mr. Vegas. I’m the one that’s gonna give you that Vegas vibe, that memorable experience. And in partnership with the Tao Group, we’re gonna give you that experience together. Tao Group has hospitality locked down like no other. So them, myself, giving that experience where people are coming from all over the world, come see Mr. Vegas. Let it be known that DJ Pauly D is Mr. Vegas.

The New American Home

Innovative products and design earn the spotlight

If you were in Las Vegas during the International Builders’ Show earlier this year, you may have had the chance to check out The New American Home, a newly constructed residence in Ascaya, a luxury community of custom-built homes in the hills of the Las Vegas Valley.

Since 1984, The New American Home has been built in various communities in conjunction with the

annual convention, including several in Las Vegas, to highlight innovative new products and designs in the industry. The 2023 home was built by architect Michael Gardner of studio g Architecture (Gardner has previously worked on other years of The New American Home), and sister company LUXUS Design Build. Gardner integrated interior design and construction with the use of

cutting-edge products to create an energy-efficient property which earned a National Green Building Standard “Emerald” certification, the highest that the National Association of Home Builders offers.

A sleek, zen design allows you to appreciate interesting details that permeate each space in the five-bedroom home, from kitchen to baths. Custom Bang & Olufsen speakers

flank a double-sided gas fireplace, which creates a focal point in the great room. The integrated sound system can be controlled via an app. In the kitchen are appliances by Signature Kitchen Suite (all Energy Star-rated) including a super-neat sous vide cooker, which sinks into the countertop when not in use.

Beyond, you’ll find a luxurious outdoor space with an infinity pool that faces the Las Vegas Strip. Gardner designed a special feature into the pool—where other homes simply have a trough for overflow, this one transforms that into a second, lap pool. And low-water use landscaping

and drip irrigation add to efficiency. In each separate bedroom suite, a dedicated HVAC system heats and cools only that area, resulting in big energy savings. A washer and dryer are located near the primary suite, as are whole outfit steam cleaners. Tankless Rinnai water heaters ensure only water used is heated, while Kohler low-flow lavatory fixtures reduce water usage.

The home is net-zero, which means it generates more energy than it uses due to products like a 20 kw solar array (Solaria PowerXT 400 watt solar panels); high-efficiency windows (Awake Window

& Door), which keep solar gain low; framing products that have enhanced insulating capability exterior frame walls (Kingspan Kooltherm K12 framing board insulation); open-cell polyurethane spray-foam insulation, and Fi-Foil’s Hy-Fi reflective wall and ceiling insulation. That adds up to a lot of energy savings, but the home also features LED lighting throughout (Circa Lighting). Paint finishes inside are low VOC, as are adhesives and sealants. –Nina
