Catch the Excitement

Here at Las Vegas Magazine, the weeks surrounding Memorial Day are some of our favorites of the year. The weather is gorgeous, the restaurants update their menus in anticipation of summer, the entertainment calendar is packed, and the tourist numbers spike. It’s just an exciting time to be in Las Vegas, and this week’s issue is a direct reflection of that.

One of the longest-awaited updates on the Strip is fi nally ready for unveiling—a complete interior and exterior renovation of Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood Resort, which has been ongoing for more than a year. Associate editor Kiko Miyasato recently took a tour. Check out our walk-through of what will surely be a shopping experience full of surprises (“Fashion Moving Forward,” p. 34).

This is also an ideal time to catch some world class, live entertainment from Barry Manilow at Westgate Las Vegas, who is close to breaking Elvis Presley’s record for the most shows at the International Theater (“A Year of Firsts,” p. 14), and Ringo Starr, who performs with his All-Starr Band for a series of shows at The Venetian (“He’s the Greatest,” p. 12), to Carlos Santana, who resumes his residency at the House of Blues at Mandalay Bay (“All Part of a Universal Story,” p. 18). If you’re looking for a world-class production show, it doesn’t get better than Cirque du Soleil’s tribute to New York, Mad Apple at New York-New York (“Top of the Heap,” p. 38).

How about a great meal? Resorts World’s Brezza, one of the best Italian restaurants on the Strip, just added a lunch menu to its already stellar lineup (“Scenes From an Italian Restaurant,” p. 28).

And, of course, we’ve got you covered as far as Memorial Day Weekend-themed parties! (“Summer’s Biggest Holiday,” p. 24). Have a great week!

the Greatest

Legendary Beatle delivers a cavalcade of hits on the Strip He’s

Ringo Starr’s third solo album set a precedent for the legendary drummer to collaborate with a group of rock stars and respected musicians, effectively making this year his 50th anniversary of leading stellar musical lineups. The present roster of Ringo Starr and His All-Starr Band is touring the western U.S., performing a handful of hits from 1973’s Ringo as well as songs that put the spotlight on colleagues such as Toto’s Steve Lukather, Colin Hay from Men at Work and Edgar Winter.

Starr’s first two albums focused on prerock standards and country-western music, respectively. Ringo was aimed at the pop charts and included George Harrison, John Lennon and Paul McCartney on one record for the first time since Abbey Road. This created a buzz about a possible Beatles reunion as contributors such as Marc Bolan, Steve Cropper, Billy Preston and members of The Band came on board.

Instead, the musicians contributed to what would become a Top 10 album with songs that blared from Top 40 radio stations well into 1974. Lennon penned and played piano on opening track “I’m the Greatest,” which featured Harrison’s lead guitar work. Harrison co-wrote “Photograph,” which became

a No. 1 hit, while Paul and Linda McCartney wrote and performed on Side 2’s “Six O’Clock.”

That side opens with “Oh My My,” which was part of His All-Starr Band sets last year, along with Starr’s 1971 hit single “It Don’t Come Easy” and Beatles tracks such as “Yellow Submarine” and “With a Little Help from My Friends.” Less well-known songs from the Beatles repertoire that Starr sang lead on, such as “Boys” and a cover of Carl Perkins’ “Matchbox,” also kept the focus on Starr as frontman.

He surrenders the stage to his AllStarrs often, though. Past sets have included Winter playing his monster instrumental hit “Frankenstein,” Hay having a go at “Down Under” and delivering passionate lead guitar playing, and Lukather leading the group through “Rosanna” and “Africa.” Drummer Gregg Bissonette and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Hamish Stuart complete a lineup featured on Live at the Greek Theater 2019, an album that whets the appetite for catching the AllStarrs live. –Matt Kelemen

Barry Manilow making all sorts of news in 2023 A Year of Firsts

With all the singers accused of relying on backing tracks as of late, it’s good to know Barry Manilow is not one of them. Five decades after the release of his debut self-titled album, Manilow’s voice is in fine form. He still sings “Could It Be Magic” from Barry Manilow, although he reserves the right to perform it with a disco arrangement, and gives his all during performances that keep faithful Fanilows coming to see him at his long-running Las Vegas residency. (This year, he’s on track to break Elvis Presley’s record for performances in the Westgate’s International Theater.)

If any modern-day entertainer is worthy of the title of “Mr. Showmanship” in 2023, it’s Manilow. He returned to Las Vegas this month after being honored with a May 1 tribute show at Carnegie Hall during the New York Pops’ 40th Birthday Gala, where friends such as Dionne Warwick and Charo were in attendance. He’ll return to the Big Apple later this month for a five-date concert series at Radio City Music Hall.

In even bigger Manilow-in-Manhattan news, his musical Harmony is set to begin previews at Broadway’s Barrymore Theatre in October. Co-created with lyricist/librettist Bruce Sussman with Tony Award-winner Warren Carlyle on board as director and choreographer, Harmony had a sold-out run last spring at the National Yiddish Theatre Folksbiene. The story of six singers who started out in Berlin’s subways of the 1920s and became stars as the Comedian Harmonists won a Drama Desk Award and received nearly a dozen nominations from other organizations.

So it’s a busy year for Manilow, full of highs that will undoubtedly add even more effervescence to his upbeat, high-energy residency shows. Manilow plays career-spanning sets that feature hits co-written by him (“Even Now,” “It’s a Miracle”) as well as covers he made famous (“Mandy,” “I Write the Songs”). The inarguable highlight is “Copacabana,” though, with Manilow pulling out all the stops for a part of the show that is as over-the-top as any Fanilow can imagine. –Matt

All Part of a Universal Story

Carlos Santana mixes up his sets from concert to concert. He plays his greatest hits, of course, and ends most shows with “Smooth,” but he has a selection of covers to choose from that allows him to make each show a little bit different. One thing that rarely changes is how performances start, with a transportation back to Woodstock when Santana, the band, was introduced to the counterculture at large via a now-iconic rendition of “Soul Sacrifice.”

That song is delivered today with modern live audio fidelity and Santana, the musician, playing its familiar riffs through a custom guitar designed by Paul Reed Smith rather than the Gibson SG with which he established his trademark sustain-fueled tone in the late ’60s. The life of Santana, the human being, has finally been documented in a film by Emmy-winning director Rudy Valdez that was acquired for worldwide distribution by Sony Pictures Classics in April. Although a release date is not yet set, Carlos, the movie, is coming.

Meanwhile, the guitarist’s tone may be best attempted with a PRS Santana SE Signature Series guitar. One of the best brands to rival

guitar giants Gibson and Fender, PRS has long had a relationship with Santana and now produces a 24-fret solid body instrument with a patented tremolo system and Santana “S” humbucking pickups for maximum sustain.

If that’s out of one’s price range, Santana, the shoe designer, has ideas for feet. His Carlos by Carlos Santana women’s footwear collection is well-established, but he’s added Shoes for Men with boots, lace-ups loafers and slip-ons as part of the collection. Santana, the philanthropist, supports his Milagro Foundation that provides health care and educational opportunities for children with profits from sales while literally providing an opportunity for people to walk in his shoes.

It’s in concert that Santana, the legend, is best experienced, though. And on the House of Blues music hall stage in An Intimate Evening with Santana: Greatest Hits Live, with songs like “Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen,” “Maria Maria” and everything in between, Santana is nothing short of transcendental. –Matt

Behind the Music

Lounge show dives into country music’s biggest hits

Country music and live music fans alike will want to make their way to Mandalay Bay’s Rhythm & Riffs lounge every Friday evening beginning at 8 p.m. for the weekly event, Aaron Benward’s Nashville Unplugged. Not only is this event free, but it’s an evening filled with music and stories that will captivate and get the audience grooving.

“Nashville Unplugged is the stories behind the songs—we showcase and feature the songwriters who write the hit songs for the country artists you know and love,” said Benward, host and producer of the show, in a previous interview with Las Vegas Magazine. “It’s kinda like we’re in your living room or on your back porch telling the stories behind the songs we’ve written that many people know or have heard on the radio.”

Besides the music, guests can enjoy the lounge’s signature cocktails list in addition to a wine and beer list. The venue is spacious and open-walled, with plenty of comfy seating for both large and small groups, and houses state-of-theart staging and lighting.

“The biggest compliments that I’ve had about Nashville Unplugged come from people that walked in expecting to hate it and they come up to me afterwards and say, ‘Hey I don’t listen to country music, I’m more a rock, metalhead, I love classical music,’ and they say this was the most entertaining, fun night they’ve ever experienced. ... When you strip it down to a guitar, a story, a voice—it just becomes music and something that touches people’s souls.”

Whether you want to leave re-energized or really relaxed, Awana Spa & Wellness has you covered. The modern spa, which was based off the golden ratio, still exudes a natural feel, with a mountain backdrop providing views from soaking pools and saunas backed with wooden slats. meister controls the flow of heat and humidity via the waving towels. The Art of Aufgass is only available if you book a massage of 60 minutes or longer or purchase the Fountains of Youth spa pass. The Fountains of Youth pass gives you access to all the amenities in the spa, including six pools with different temperatures and properties, steam rooms, a crystal laconium, tepidarium chairs, and tiled chaises that deliver soothing warmth all along your body.

Massages here draw inspiration from traditions across the globe, like Thai, Bali, Tokyo and Machu Picchu, and each has a specific aim, such as detoxification, harmonization of body and mind, and relaxation. Facials can be customized to your skin type and include exfoliation and hydration. You can even enjoy shorter treatments in the foot spa lounge for targeted areas. –Nina King

General manager of beverage scores big with career Eric Kroeker

Some could say that Eric Kroeker has his dream job, general manager of beverage for T-Mobile Arena. “I love hockey; it’s my No. 1 sport,” says the Ohio native. Kroeker also loves creating flavor profiles and cocktails. With his culinary school background and many years working as a pastry chef (he even competed on Food Network’s show Candy Land ), he’s now transferred that knowledge to cocktails.

“I took my skill set from pastry to the flavor profiles of beverage,” he says. All this combines for Kroeker at his job at

T-Mobile Arena, where’s he’s worked for the past five years.

Every season, Kroeker and the beverage team, which includes world-renowned mixologist Tony Abou-Ganim, create the cocktail program that guests of T-Mobile Arena get to enjoy.

“This is Vegas, and this is just not a sports venue,” he says. “We couldn’t land flat and be like, ‘Here’s your beer!’ while they’re doing this over-the-top showcase that Vegas is known for. That’s what makes T-Mobile Arena so amazing.”

• Libation • The Golden Knight

Listening to arena fans’ wants, Kroeker added a whiskey cocktail to the menu this season— and it’s a huge hit! The Golden Knight is a play on the classic whiskey sour. It’s a mix of Jameson Irish whiskey, Cointreau, cold-pressed pineapple, lime and orange juice, nutmeg, Angostura bitters and ginger beer. –KM

While fans of the Vegas Golden Knights hockey team are enjoying that housemade margarita, it’s Kroeker and his team behind the cocktail magic. Fans that attend the games have come to know Kroeker, making sure to slap him a high five as he roams the arena floor checking up on his beverage team.

“We see our hockey fans 41 games a year minimum, so we can’t be stagnant,” he says. “We can’t give them the same thing over and over. You have to give them a little surprise, new cocktails every season.” –Kiko Miyasato

Brezza delivers a welcoming atmosphere and mouthwatering dishes for lunch and dinner

Can’t quite get to Italy this year? Well, dining at Brezza on your desert vacation will make you feel like you’ve slipped in a detour to a restaurant there. A large part of that is due to chef Nicole Brisson’s

cooking experiences in the kitchens of Italy, which she has showcased during her career in Vegas.

Brezza sits near one end of the wide-open promenade of the District. The elegant, comfortable din-

ing area is accented with stone walls and wood. It features a lovely little bar adjacent to the dining room, and an olive-tree lined patio, looking out on the Strip, is perfect for casual lunches and romantic dinners of coastal Italian cuisine.

Lunch, a relatively recent addition to Brezza, has a smaller menu that includes a few favorites from dinner and some special treats

only available there. Go ahead and order wine; there’s a very good list available (or save that experience for dinner—you’re sure to want to return after your delicious lunch). Indulge in the heirloom tomato caprese with bu alo mozzarella— the tomatoes are delightful and the cheese so silky. Tuscan carne crudo will keep you snacking until your entrée appears on the table.

Some of those entrées include the Brezza burger and the mortadella melt. The burger combines wagyu, chuck and brisket for a tender patty that sits on a potato bun, with your choice of cheddar, Gorgonzola or mascarpone. The mortadella melt is anointed with pistachio pesto, robiola cheese and a bit of arugula. Margherita pizza feels so fresh, simply prepared with tomato, mozzarella and basil.

You’ll fi nd pan-seared skate with artichokes and fennel on lunch and dinner menus, as well as the meaty lumache Bolognese and bucatini alla amatriciana, with flavors deepened

by Fresno chile and guanciale. And if you want a lighter option, the Brezza “Caesar” salad and a chopped salad fi ll the bill.

If you are in for dinner, order the salumi and cheese board to begin with—the cheeses are well-balanced and sourced from next-door tapas joint Bar Zazu. You’ll fi nd several types of seafood in a variety of preparations—charred octopus, fried calamari, oysters on the half shell, abalone, tuna carpaccio,

lobster campanelle and pan-seared scallops; it’s certainly easy to see the coastal influence here. Pasta is also a hallmark of Brisson’s training, and in addition to the lobster campanelle, you’ll fi nd rigatoni arrabiata, mint pappardelle with wild boar ragu, gnocchi with fennel sausage and a nice cappellacci oreganata, among others. Meat choices range from chicken cacciatore and braised short ribs to grilled items like Cape Grim New York strip, veal Parmesan

and fi let mignon. You can also get dry-aged steaks, a specialty of Brisson’s. We personally recommend the dry-aged bone-in New York strip.

For dessert, try the frutti di bosco panna cotta with mixed berries and shortbread cookies or the luscious tiramisu. And in the signature lemon olio verde tart, the lemon curd and olive oil meringue make for a sweet that’s not overly cloying, and it’s topped with a large letter “B”— surely that stands for beautiful!

Miracle Mile Shops is nearing completion of its interior and exterior transformation

Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood Resort has long been the embodiment of all-in-one when it comes to fashion, food and entertainment. Since its introduction to the Las Vegas Strip in 2007, the center has been a huge draw for guests, not only for what it o ers along its indoor 1.2-mile stretch of corridors but also for its captivating façade that lights up Las Vegas Boulevard South, both day and night.

Miracle Mile Shops announced a couple of years ago that it would undergo a complete interior and exterior renovation, upgrading to a more modern, sleek and brighter look with new technological additions and artistic installations. The complete renovation—by design and construction partners Cooper Carry, Digital Kitchen, Sensory Interactive and VCC—is expected by early summer, but even now guests can immerse themselves in the new experience.

Hanging overhead throughout the corridors are beautiful lighting installations giving o artistic vibes and a cohesive flow to the mall. New LED screens add to the lighting technology and, expected later this year, the north entrance that faces Las Vegas Boulevard South will be one of the crowning achievements with a brand-new, technologically advanced LED screen spanning more than 11,000 square feet,

Las Vegas Magazine 5.21.23 | 35

making the main entrance of Miracle Mile Shops a visually can’t-miss experience. The mall’s other two entrances will also unveil new LED screen signage.

In an homage to its past, Miracle Mile Shops is keeping some elements of the classic Desert Passage theme. (The hotel was previously the Aladdin Hotel, and the attached mall was introduced as Desert Passage in 2000 and kept the Arabian bazaar theme until its transformation into Miracle Mile Shops.) Guests can still get glimpses of the mall’s original theme by visiting two popular sections, including one near V Theater, where an immersive projec-

tion-mapping show will be installed later this year. More than 30 projectors, along with detailed lighting, sound, video and music, will make the outside of the buildings come alive with a free show, running several times a day, that will incorporate earth’s elements of rain, ice, fire and more.

The other immersive Desert Passage atmosphere is located where the long-running Rain Show is installed, which also received a major upgrade. The popular attraction that allowed guests to witness an indoor rainstorm, complete with sounds of thunder and falling water, will now envelop guests

into the experience, with a newly installed walkover bridge, where falling sheets of water will make for the perfect Instagram spot.

In addition to the free attractions and V Theater’s and Saxe Theater’s ongoing residency shows, Miracle Mile Shops entertainment o erings include the newly rebranded Bakkt Theater, a 7,000-seat, state-of-the-art concert venue where resident headliners like Miranda Lambert, Keith Urban and Kelly Clarkson are scheduled to perform throughout the year.

Food and beverage also abound with tons of quick-serve eateries and

sit-down restaurants like Cabo Wabo Cantina, Flights, Nacho Daddy and Blondies (a perfect spot for some beer pong!). Later this year, New York import Rosa Mexicano will be opening its first

location in Las Vegas. The Mexican restaurant’s space, its largest to date, will be a combination of beautiful and immersive interior design that celebrates the culture and a “made-

from-scratch menu steeped in Mexican culture and tradition.” It will also house a Stripside patio, perfect for al fresco dining and people-watching.

The biggest draw is the Shops’ retail o erings, an impressive lineup of stores that house everything from accessories, shoes, and health and beauty products to fine art and collectibles, gifts, home décor, and a host of women’s and men’s fashions. If you can’t find a complete outfit at Miracle Mile Shops, you can’t find one anywhere on the Las Vegas Strip—choose from casual looks from top spots like H&M, Lucky Brand and Marshall Rousso to more trendy, fashion-forward brands like Original Penguin, GUESS, White House | Black Market, U.S. Polo Assn. and Desigual.

Now with a more modern and elevated look, along with more immersive and technologically advanced experiences, Miracle Mile Shops continues to be a big draw for a day of shopping, dining, drinking and fun—all under one roof.

Mad Apple replicates the zany energy of New York

even joining the zaniness on stage

they flip each other through the air using only the power of their legs;

• into place on a large contraption and grabs a woman by the arms, flipping and flinging her into the air using only his arm strength;

• A hand balancer who’s as graceful as he is lithe and sinewy;

• Aerialists who spin around the stage and over some of the audience, as well as floor acrobats who jump through hoops that get progressively higher and higher.

A strongman who’s harnessed banter. Another comedic highlight

There’s also plenty of humor, most of it supplied by comedian Harrison Greenbaum, an America’s Got Talent alumnus who even performs a bit of magic in between the hilarious jokes and audience banter. Another comedic highlight involves the show’s “stage manager” displaying his talents when it comes to shadow puppets. (Spoiler alert and a surprise to absolutely no one: It’s for adults only!)

Mad Apple is a bit overwhelming at

The energy exhibited during a performance of Cirque du Soleil’s times—much like the city the show salutes through a series of vignettes, some comical, some acrobatic, some a bit profane. Through

it all, the Cirque troupe lovingly replicates the bustling vibe of the City That Never Sleeps.

Everything about this show screams motion— bodies are constantly moving and flying across the stage; there’s a bar set up in front of the stage prior to

showtime, with both bartenders displaying their flair skills for the crowd. Heck, even the live band, including a trumpeter, saxophonist, keyboard player and drummer, can’t sit still, twisting and turning in their perches above the proceedings, and

As your ears are treated to live versions of songs like “New York State of Mind,” “Summertime” and “Rhapsody in Blue,” your eyes are treated to some of the best Cirque acts the Strip has to o er:

• A juggler who exudes confidence (and more than a bit of sexiness) as he throws juggling pins high into the air, catching them from all angles;

• A diabolo artist who keeps adding yo-yos without skipping a single beat;

• Basketball dunkers who seem to almost be on the verge of vaulting into audience members seated at the sides of the stage (Of course they never do, and in the process show o impeccable timing);

A woman who hangs from a harness by her long hair and performs a full routine that way, spinning, cavorting and displaying a gracefulness most of us would not possess were our follicles in danger;

Two performers who make the entire audience hold its breath while

Speaking of hand gestures, yes, there are plenty of “Bronx salutes” in this show—would you expect anything less?

This Ridges home seamlessly blends exterior and interior living The Great Indoors

Las Vegas is home to many luxurious master-planned communities, ones that offer the highest-quality homes, amenities and spectacular views of the valley and its surroundings. (One thing you quickly learn about buying homes here: Views come at a premium.)

One of the best examples of these is The Ridges in Summerlin, a guard-gated, master-planned community close to Red Rock Conservation Area. A property has recently become available in Redhawk, an exclusive enclave with more than 80 luxury homes ranging from 6,000 to

10,000 square feet. It’s surrounded by Bear’s Best Las Vegas golf course, so amazing views are par for the course (sorry, couldn’t resist).

This estate offers not only a prime location but a stunning exterior and interior. If impressing company is your goal, well ... mission accom-

plished. Featuring five bedrooms, eight bathrooms and a four-car garage, this 9,429-square-foot home, listed by Kamran Zand of Luxury Estates International, is the perfect home for desert living. Its two stories are accessible by two staircases and an elevator.

With pocket doors that disappear into walls, this home blends indoor and outdoor spaces seamlessly, offering views of the mountains and Strip. All rooms have access to patios or balconies, and there are so

many architectural touches to catch your eye, from the towering foyer and dining room to granite counters, marble floors and fireplaces, as well as stacked-stone exterior.

There’s so much entertaining space—the chef’s kitchen contains Sub-Zero, Wolf and Miele appliances, wet bar, wine storage and butler’s pantry, while an upstairs lounge has a bar and wraparound terrace.

All bedrooms here are their own private paradises, and the primary bedrooms are on separate floors,

featuring all the amenities you could need, including walk-in closets and spa-like bathrooms. There’s also an upstairs yoga studio, and the home’s office opens wide to a courtyard.

The backyard is stunning, thanks to its infinity-edge pool, spa, wet deck and fire features, as well as an outdoor grill with automated louvers. –Ken
