All About the Stories

Those who know me are acutely aware of what a big America’s Got Talent fan I am. Ever since Terry Fator won his season, I’ve been hooked. The lineup of judges has changed numerous times over the years and the production values keeps adding bells and whistles, but one thing about AGT that has never changed is its feel. The backstories its contestants o er to the nation can be inspirational, humorous, romantic, deeply emotional and, at times, tragic, but always relatable. As impressive as the acts are, the greatest feat AGT pulls o every season is its ability to connect America to some of most talented people on the planet.

It’s that spirit of connection we wanted to spotlight in this week’s issue. Check out my revealing interview with three of the acts currently featured in the Luxor production America’s Got Talent Presents SUPERSTARS Live (“Anything But Ordinary,” p. 32). Then get your tickets to one of the most entertaining shows you’ll ever see.

What’s that you say? Bring on even more entertainment? Our pleasure! Keith Urban returns to his residency at Planet Hollywood Resort (“Somebody Like Him,” p. 38), while over at Palms, you can enjoy an evening with the dream pairing of Robert Plant and Alison Krauss (“Harvest of Harmonies,” p. 40). And speaking of Terry Fator, he’s still packing the house at New York-New York (“Making Impressions,” p. 12).

While taking in all this goodness, don’t forget to fuel up. If you have a sweet tooth, check out Dominique Ansel’s newest creations at his Caesars Palace bakery (“We Can’t Believe It’s Not Ice Cream,” p. 14), while lovers of French-Mediterranean will love the newly arrived Cathédrale at Aria (“Beauty and the Feast,” p. 28).

Go get connected to Las Vegas, and come back with plenty of stories of your own.

Making Impressions

Some entertainers excel at singing. Others have a natural gift for impressions. A more elite class maintains the tradition of ventriloquism, often with puppeteer co-stars who have more leeway to make unfiltered comic comments. Terry Fator is a triple threat, having found his voice(s) as a vocalist who can do uncanny takes on celebrity singers before discovering handheld cast members with the right amount of chemistry to create a stage show to take him to the top.

The top in Fator’s line of work included winning America’s Got Talent before becoming a Strip headliner. There are rising stars who are following in Fator’s footsteps, but his only real peer in his field is Jeff Dunham, and there appears to be room for only one resident voice thrower, as his current production, Who’s the Dummy Now? is the only one of its kind on Las Vegas Boulevard.

Fator raised the bar for this performance art with a modern history that began with vaudeville-era ventriloquist Edgar Bergen and his legendary dummies—evening-attired Charlie McCarthy and slow-witted Mortimer Snerd. Shari Lewis catered to children beginning in the ’50s via television with her lovable sock puppet Lamb Chop. Wayland Flowers and Willie Tyler were the most visible ventriloquists of the ’70s, thanks to the charisma of their respective sidekicks, flamboyant Madame and wisecracking Lester.

Then ventriloquism fell out of vogue, with no real stars emerging in the ’80s when Fator began touring the country as a singer while video games and increasingly risqué comedy captured audiences’ attention. Jim Carrey took celebrity impressions to the next

level by morphing his facial features into stars like James Dean, Jack Nicholson or Clint Eastwood.

There needed to be new, innovative formulas for rising to the top. Fator found his in a turtle named Winston, whose own powers of impersonation equal (some say surpass) Fator’s own. Winston really came out of his shell during Fator’s stint on AGT, but Fator would later involve many more personalities for a successful Vegas show.

Fator has been assisted in no small way by the talents of Elvis impersonator Maynard Tompkins, country music crooner Walter T. Airdale and ambitious sexpot Vikki the Cougar, among many others. Depending on who is in town, there could be a Rat Pack member or outlaw country singer with familiar-looking braids on stage. Guest stars resembling David Bowie, Michael Jackson, Elton John, Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder in both sound and appearance have been known to join the hijinks.

Although the future of ventriloquism is uncertain (the next generation has the option of incorporating AI technology), Fator is a major factor in the demand for the performing art in the present. He appeared on the Jan. 2 season premiere of AGT: All-Stars alongside Winston and Elton John and received a standing ovation. Notoriously fickle Simon Cowell referred to him as “the best of the best” during that episode. Fator, whose leverage as an AGT winner led to his conquering Las Vegas, continues to make good impressions. –

We Can’t Believe It’s Not Ice Cream

Pastry chef unveils new summer-themed offerings

Dominique Ansel is enjoying quite a moment right now. He recently opened his first Las Vegas enterprise ( Dominique Ansel Las Vegas); he recently celebrated the 10th anniversary of his unique creation, the Cronut; heck, he was recently an entire Jeopardy! category. And life just continues to get sweeter for the French pastry chef, who recently unveiled a whole new lineup to his already stellar offerings.

Designed specifically for summer, Ansel’s latest launch is called the Ice Cream Truck Pastry Collection, inspired by ice cream truck treats that many consumers remember and love from their childhood, including:

Strawberry Lychee Kakigori, the beloved Japanese shaved ice dessert, transformed into pastry form with lychee strawberry mousse, strawberry compote, genoise cake, vanilla Chantilly, fresh strawberries and white chocolate;

The Chocolate Taco, here reproduced with chocolate financier, hazelnut praline, Gianduja mousse, dark chocolate cremeux, chocolate Chantilly and hazelnut sable.

Pistachio Rolled Ice Cream, which is brought to wonderful life with crème brûlée cream, orange blossom almond biscuit, crispy pistachio feuilletine, pistachio ganache, vanilla Chantilly and chopped Sicilian pistachios.

Cookie Ice Cream Sandwich, a universally loved classic reproduced here with flourless chocolate biscuit, gooey salted caramel, cookie dough ganache, vanilla bavarois and chocolate chip sable.

Orange Yuzu Cream Bar, which will make your memory banks overload with its combo of chiffon cake, yuzu curd, orange marmalade, vanilla mousse and candied orange peel.

Banana Split, a wonderful combo of banana cake, raspberry jam, chocolate ganache, banana ganache, vanilla Chantilly, cherry cremeux and vanilla sable.

Coconut Pineapple Sundae, an over-the-top wonder made with coconut dacquoise, guava compote, pineapple compote and mousse with lime zest and coconut lime mousse in a chocolate coconut “shell.” And, of course, there will be Cronuts! As Ansel told Las Vegas Magazine, the Cronut came out of a labor of love. “We wanted to create something special for Mother’s Day back in 2013, and my wife had suggested a doughnut, but I didn’t have any recipes for a doughnut—I’m French! We decided to create something that resembled the shape of a doughnut but using a laminated dough that’s similar to a croissant with those flaky layers and textures.” –Ken

Cirque du Soleil show features a unique set and impressive acrobatics

KÀ brings elements of fantasy, battlefield glory, makeup design and special effects together with colorful costumes, exciting action and exquisite pageantry to relate an original tale of a pair of twins who are separated and follow individual paths as they come of age, learn about love and witness war. There is an odyssey to experience, complete with flaming arrows, wall walking, overhead views of combat, underwater scenes and a ship tossed about by a storm at sea as audiences inside KÀ Theater remain dry.

It’s fitting that a spectacle on as grand a scale as KÀ would find a home at MGM Grand. It’s like watching live three-dimensional cinema that places the audience amid martial artists who leap and lunge without the aid of camerawork and editing. As their characters fight for their lives, cast members rely on coordination, expertise and focus to ensure fictional defeated enemies don’t become real-life casualties while they navigate a massive rotating stage. Now an entertainment institution on the south end of the Strip, KÀ continues

to create its own legacy since launching under the direction of creator Robert Lepage nearly 18 years ago. He’s refined the production in the years since the curtain opened for the first time in the massive theater, taking the knowledge that came with the learning curve for the tech and tweaking it for maximum effectiveness.

The results of his dedication to perfection are more than worth seeing— and revisiting. –Matt

Infinite Elegance

Intimate pool at Resorts World is the perfect oasis

Athena Infinity Ultra Pool is a beautiful escape that awaits at Resorts World Las Vegas. The adults-only water paradise houses a standout feature—a large infinity pool that overlooks the city. And for those that want to be more in the mix, there is an additional pool, with its own cool features like daybeds semi-submerged in the cool waters.

While cushy lounge chairs are up for grabs, treat yourself by booking a daybed or a spacious, luxurious bungalow. Each daybed comes with towel service, umbrellas for shade, side tables and a dedicated server and poolside concierge. For that special experience, the bungalows offer tons of room to chill out and watch TV on the flat screen or put on your favorite song through the audio system. There are also misting fans, oversized lounge chairs, sofas, refrigerator, a safe, and your own cocktail server.

Athena’s perfect mix of upscale-meets-bohemian retreat is like a hidden gem of a pool that’s giving off major island vibes—and that includes its tropical specialty cocktails. Sip on recipes that include the Meet Me in Tulum, mixed with Avion blanco tequila, fresh lime and Fever-Tree grapefruit soda; the Passion Fruit Twist with Absolut Elyx vodka, lime juice,

passion fruit and Sprite; and the Blackberry Bliss with Belvedere organic blackberry lemongrass vodka, Chambord, lime juice, sour mix and Sprite. Other libations include craft and draft beers, champagnes, bottle service, seltzers and wines by the glass.

Hungry? There is no need to leave Athena for lunch; check out its huge menu of tempting dishes inspired by Mexican cuisine. Start off with the tostadas de pescado, with mahi, pico de gallo, avocado and micro cilantro, or the loaded fries with your choice of protein (even Beyond Meat) and piled high with cheese sauce, pico de gallo, creama, cotija cheese, jalapeños, green onions and house-made salsa agave. Salads and bowls offer everything from a classic Caesar and chicken salad to tuna poke and a Mexican cobb. Main courses include taco options and burgers, and dessert is lip-smacking good, with options like a margarita tart and a caramel flan.

If you need a break from the water, Athena Infinity Ultra Pool also offers plenty of bar-top seating and tons of shaded areas with club chairs so you can take a break from that hot Vegas sun. –Kiko Miyasato

The Highest Standards

Downtown restaurant is the perfect place for a memorable meal

If you’re planning a memorable meal in Las Vegas, it’s hard to not imagine it involving Vic & Anthony’s Steakhouse, one of the city’s most-awarded restaurants and one whose standards are as high as the day it opened downtown.

All your favorites are here, from jumbo shrimp and lobster bisque to fresh oysters on the half shell and seafood towers. While enjoying your choice of a caprese, Caesar or iceberg wedge salad, sip a classic cocktail, everything from a Manhattan and Old-Fashioned to a Negroni and margarita.

All steaks here feature USDA prime grain-fed beef, so when you dig into that filet mignon, prime ribeye, chateaubriand or porterhouse, you’ll taste the difference, especially when you complement them with Bearnaise, port peppercorn and blue cheese butter bacon. If you want beef but not steak, opt for the terrific wagyu braised beef, so tender and succulent and served with heirloom carrots, cipollini onions and crispy fingerling potatoes.

The entrée menu’s options include plenty of poultry and fish options. The

fried lobster mac and cheese is a beast, made with a five-pound lobster tail, cavatappi pasta and lobster cheese sauce, while succulent, pan-roasted chicken is served with mashed potatoes and asparagus.

Desserts don’t get much more iconic than Vic & Anthony’s In the Round, a chocolate globe that is melted at your table, revealing banana semifreddo, roasted white chocolate crumble and bananas Foster sauce. –Ken Miller

Catch Up

Best-selling R&B artist returns to his hit Vegas residency

The legacy of such legendary performers as James Brown, Michael Jackson and Prince lives on in a strong way with Usher, who has distilled these influences into his very unique style, which he amply displays at his newest Strip production, Usher: My Way—The Vegas Residency. He’s already conquered the Colosseum at Caesars Palace, and if the reaction to his newest shows at Dolby Live at Park MGM are any indication, he’s just getting started.

This is a show that hearkens back to the days of old Vegas, where the stars had the audience hanging on every note, every syllable. Usher’s band, consisting of saxophonists, pianists and guitarists, renders his greatest hits—from “Caught Up to “U Don’t Have to Call”—with an energy that has everyone dancing in the aisles. And slow jams like “Lovers and Friends” bring out the more, um, amorous side of his biggest fans and their dates.

Speaking of dancing, Usher displays more than a few of his inimitable moves during this show—including an amazingly choreographed chair routine with a cadre of male dancers, as well as on roller skates when performing “Superstar.” (His skating prowess is clear in the music video for “Good Love.”) And the production design here is without peer, including a two-story strip club structure, complete with pole dancers. –Las Vegas Magazine Staff

Splash Into the Fun and Fabulous

The weekends belong to these LGBTQ+ pool parties

Feel the love—whomever you choose to love and however you choose to love—at the Las Vegas Strip’s LGBTQ+ pool parties every Saturday and Sunday. While Sundays have belonged to Temptation Sundays for 13 years at Luxor, Sahara Las Vegas now comes in clutch every Saturday with its Elevate Pride Pool Party. The two safe spaces to take a dip, party under the sun and splash into fabulousness create the perfect weekend to welcome the gay community and its supporters.

“Everyone is Welcome at Temptation Sundays,” said host Eduardo Cordova, who is also the owner of one of the city’s most popular gay clubs, The Garden Las Vegas. “We have something for everybody, and

we are a safe space for all those in the LGBTQ+ community. The Luxor staff (is) super welcoming and embrace love and acceptance.”

And the Elevate Pride Pool Party is contributing to the community by partnering with Las Vegas Pride. “We started Sahara Cares as a way to support and give back to our local community,” said Jae Edwards, Sahara’s digital marketing manager. “As part of our Sahara Cares initiatives, we wanted to find ways to include and financially support the local LGBTQIA+ community.

Partnering with Las Vegas Pride to host the official pride pool party was a no-brainer. Half of all ticket sales will go to Las Vegas Pride, which is a nonprofit dedicated to ending

Temptation Sundays

discrimination against LGBTQIA+ people by developing and advocating for policies that support this community.”

Now with two pool parties, the fun has doubled. Guests of Temptation Sundays can enjoy the massive pool with Roman columns and waterfall features, while guests of Elevate party on the rooftop in the

intimate and upscale setting. “Each year gets bigger and better and it’s very exciting for us to elevate our events and keep our party inclusive,” Cordova said. “We curate each season with special DJs, guest celebrities and amazing drag queen entertainers to create a unique party atmosphere that welcomes one and all. … We continually hear sto-

ries of guests meeting their husband or their best friend at Temptation Sundays. Our fun activations, special guests and surprises are what keep fans coming back for more.”

And the vibes and programming at Elevate are, “electric, vibrant, inclusive, sunny day poolside vibes with themed cocktails, high energy, etc.,” Edwards said.

For an extra-special experience, book a cabana or daybed at either pool party. “Temptation Sundays’ cabanas include entry for up to eight guests, four plush lounge chairs and a mini fridge for the ultimate indulgent day by the pool,” Cordova said. (Cabanas are limited, so book a VIP cabana in advance.)

At Elevate, guests are privy to the property’s delish dishes from restaurants like Chickie’s & Pete’s Crabhouse & Sports Bar and Uno Más Street Tacos & Spirits by using the on-property mobile ordering app, Mr. Yum. Look up full menus, place the order, pay for the order and then go downstairs to pick up the meal and bring it back to Elevate to enjoy!

Keep it proud and loud all weekend long this summer at these two not-to-be-missed pool parties. “While there are properties that host LGBTQIA+ events on The Strip, we wanted to provide an inclusive space that directly supports the LGBTQIA+ community here in Las Vegas, and we couldn’t think of a better nonprofit organization to work directly with than Las Vegas Pride,” Edwards said.

And as Cordova said, “It’s so important for our community to have representation and visibility front and center at the beautiful Luxor on the Las Vegas Strip. MGM Resorts has always been an advocate for inclusivity and equality, and this is a way we can celebrate our true selves with our beautiful LGBTQ+ community. The love and support we get from tourists from all over the world and regulars in attendance make this party so special and exciting.

“It’s an event that everyone looks forward to year after year.”

Rocco Davi

Server calls The Mirage home since the day it opened

In a city of constant change, it’s always nice to find an enduring story, and this one belongs to Rocco Davi, food server at Osteria Costa at The Mirage.

“I feel like it’s my baby, this hotel,” Davi says. “I grew up here. There have been opportunities to leave several times, but this place has been so good to me that I wanted to stick it out. The grass can always be greener, but working here has afforded me a nice life.”

Davi has worked at The Mirage since it opened in 1987—that’s 36 years! When he turned 15, he took a job as

busboy at the Golden Nugget, then owned by Steve Wynn. When Wynn opened The Mirage, he offered Nugget employees first dibs on jobs at the new hotel, so Davi made the move. During his tenure, he’s worked his way up from busboy to a full-time server at the Italian restaurants that have called the property home, and he’s been at Osteria Costa since it opened five years ago.

“It’s classic Italian, but it’s the best classic Italian you’re ever going to have,” Davi says. “I’m so proud of our chef, because I have no problem walking

A perfect summer sip is the Bella, one of Osteria Costa’s most popular specialty cocktails. Enjoy a mix of Cruzan strawberry rum, St-Germain, house-made limoncello, cranberry juice, pineapple juice, lemon juice, simple syrup and egg white. –KM

up to a table and asking how our food is, because I always get the same response, ‘It’s incredible.’”

Not only is the food great and worth the visit, it’s Davi that makes Osteria Costa a destination, too. In fact, guests request him on the regular, and the man has three decades worth of stories to share about the property. “Be kind to your guests and make them feel special,” he says. “You have to make each individual feel like they’re important, and that’s what I do every night—that’s what I’ve always done.” –

Prime aged ribeye

Las Vegas has its share of on-trend restaurants, but one of the newest and hottest is Cathédrale at Aria. Tucked next to Catch near the hotel lobby, Cathédrale’s blue, curtain-lined entry beckons you down a short corridor to the restaurant. Inside, find a long bar to one side with plenty of seating for diners and a taste of the architecture that prevails in the main dining room opposite. Filled with dark woods and plush seating, it looks as you’d imagine a Renaissance church might, hence the name. That name channels the original Cathédrale in New York, where soaring ceilings and wooden tables abound.

Drinks here are fun and tasty, with such offerings as the Quintessentia, a sweet concoction of Maker’s Mark bourbon, Nonino amaro, lemon and blood orange. It’s topped by egg white accented with an orange “C” that provides a nice finish. And La Bohème is a light mix of Bacardi Superior rum, watermelon and lime, with raspberry caviar. I admit to nursing mine throughout my meal; the fresh, popping boba are delightful. For a nonalcoholic option, try the Blackberry Buck with blackberry, lemon and Fever-Tree ginger beer.

Start your foray into the French-Mediterranean cuisine here with grilled hen of

the woods mushrooms and basil pesto. The chef’s oyster selection comes with a mignonette and fresh lemon. A classic item, the caprese, gets an update with grilled marinated peppers standing in for the typical tomatoes. Dip into the burrata with wedges of chickpea pancakes.

A signature dish imported from Cathédrale’s New York location, The Omelette comes with house-made potato chips, crème fraîche and the vaunted kaluga caviar. Even salad gets an upgrade—the king crab and avocado salad adds in lob-

ster and a celery root remoulade to a bed of butter lettuce.

For entrées, take your pick of such items as a 22-ounce prime aged ribeye or the huge Pané Diable, schnitzel-like breaded chicken breast with mustard endive and Asian pear. The fragrance of black truffle fettucine will waft across the table. Yum, yum and yum. Round out those dishes with sides like a French fry bouquet, with perfectly cooked spuds, neither too crisp nor heartbreakingly limp. A steamed cauliflower is accented with mint and is way better than you’d imagine (and it’s healthy!!!!!—I’d add another exclamation point, but you get the point).

For dessert, you have a plethora of dishes to choose from, including the gorgeous Sorrento Lemon. This is a doppelgänger for a real lemon, with bright yellow dappled “skin.” Crack it open, and the flavors of yuzu and calamansi come bursting through. The Paris-brest layers hazelnut cream between pieces of Pâte à Choux and drizzles with chocolate sauce. You’ll want to share with your dining companion, if you are gracious. I am not, so I snatched it away to enjoy solo.

Real people provide amazing entertainment in ‘America’s Got Talent Presents SUPERSTARS Live’

To witness a performance of America’s Got Talent Presents SUPERSTARS Live is kind of mind-blowing. On the one hand, if you’re already a fan of the hit NBC reality competition (which started its 18th season on May 30), it’s a chance to see the acts you voted for up close and in person. On the other hand, you’re seeing everyday people (yes, just like you and me) that made something of themselves with very little help or backing. It’s quite remarkable to consider that people who had ordinary jobs and lives just a few scant years ago are now, as the show’s title indicates, superstars.

The Prince George, Va., native began his journey to stardom at the age of 14 with nothing more than a tree and his grandmother’s bedsheet. Utilizing how-to videos, Bryant taught himself everything from contortion and hand-balancing to archery—in just two years.

Bryant came close to winning the whole thing in season 16 (coming in second place), but he returned for

America’s Got Talent: All-Stars, and this time he could not be denied. In one of AGT ’s most indelible moments, Bryant’s physical feats had judge Simon Cowell so gobsmacked, he let loose an expletive and had to be bleeped.

Now Bryant is enjoying the adulation of millions as one of the highlights of the Luxor production, and it’s a privilege he fully appreciates. “This opportunity only comes once in a lifetime,” Bryant says in an interview with Las Vegas Maga-

zine. “I’m going to put my best foot forward to wow the crowd every time I step on that stage.”

The sheer physicality of his act demands a high level of commitment, and Bryant admits that one of the biggest challenges he faces is “trying to stay flexible for the next show,” but added his fans are a huge motivating factor. “The fans are constantly saying that they’re loving my legs and pointed feet in the air,” he says. “This makes my heart warm, because I work so hard to get them.”

Many past AGT acts now have fulltime shows in Las Vegas, and Bryant is very aware of that, stating he has long-term plans for performing in Las Vegas: “This is the capital of entertainment, and I am an entertainer. I want to live here full-time and share my talent with all!”

Some of the other acts you may see during a performance of SUPERSTARS Live:

Mervant Vera, a magician who also creates spontaneous raps

Kodi Lee, a pianist and singer who won his season of AGT

Deadly Games, specializing in knifeand ax-throwing prowess

Mike E. Winfield, a stand-up comedian who also hosts the proceedings

Duo Transcend, a husband-andwife aerial act that is as exciting as it is romantic

Ventriloquist Celia Munoz, who performs without puppets, making everything around her “talk”

The Silhouettes, a group that makes shadow images on a white screen, creating captivating, emotional worlds

Light Balance, a dance troupe that uses state-of-the-art technology to create mind-blowing visuals

One of the more inspirational acts in the history of AGT is undeniably The Pack Drumline, a group formed in 2014 as part of an at-risk after-school program in Chicago. Its performance, which consists of dancing, drumming and even a bit of acrobatics, won over the judges, Chicago, and all of America.

Even though the group didn’t win its season, it was a huge inspiration for millions, and its message of pulling yourself out of a bad situation through grit, determination and, most of all, hope, resonates with all who hear the story. Perry Donta’e, one of its members, relates a recent fan-related story:

“We met a father and daughter who had traveled from Canada to

specifically see us,” Donta’e tells Las Vegas Magazine. “Both of them were drummers themselves; the daughter is in the marching band at her school and told all of her classmates about us! They let us know that seeing us in person was a completely di erent experience than they had imagined, and that we blew them away with our sheer energy. This is really what we do this for, moments like that.”

And Donta’e says The Pack

Drumline’s story is just beginning in Vegas. “Our main goal now is to leave a long-lasting impression on the Las Vegas strip. We want to make ourselves known as a staple in the Las Vegas city, culture and community. By striving to continuously evolve our performance and increase our network with other talented artists and management teams, we know we can turn our brand into a household name here in Vegas.”

Human Fountains bring gross-out hilarity to the masses

Many of us dabbled in theater and other forms of entertainment in high school. But Sam Kaufman, Joel Lowinger and a group of his friends took it far beyond that level. They formed Human Fountains at the Denver Jewish Day School, and the power of social media took over from there. Their viral success led to an invite from AGT ’s producers, and despite Cowell’s negative reaction to the act, they were an instant hit.

To enjoy the Human Fountains act—which currently consists of Kaufman, Jesse Highley, Robert Ryan and Kirk Marsh (who rotate into the three-person act)—is to enjoy an amalgam of the Three Stooges, the Marx

Brothers and the comedies of the Farrelly brothers. It’s slapstick combined with gross-out humor, and it’s proven to be an audience favorite. Clad in tuxedos and emerging to dramatic music, the Fountains take turns shooting water out of their mouths and into the air.

The lunacy of where it

goes from there—which includes, you guessed it, an extremely reluctant audience volunteer—is best described by founding member Kaufman: What’s an example of the best feedback you’ve received from fans?

“Next time, we’re sitting in the splash zone!”

How would you describe the opportunity to perform at a Las Vegas Strip property ?

SPITacular!

What’s been the best thing about living and working in Las Vegas?

Being close to our mother, the Bellagio fountains.

What are your long-term goals for performing in Vegas?

We hope to follow in our mother’s footsteps and become the go-to fountain show on the Strip.

Are there any challenges to performing here that you didn’t expect? Our act can be hard to swallow.

If you’ve attended a Las Vegas residency or two, you may be accustomed to the over-the-top theatrics these shows tend to display. With an abundance of extravagant entertainment, sometimes well-done, skill-focused simplicity becomes a welcome breath of fresh air. Keith Urban: The Las Vegas Residency masters that refreshing concept tenfold.

As Urban and his band play favorites like “Somebody Like You,” “One Too Many” and “Blue Ain’t Your Color,” the straightfor-

ward stage setup and beautifully coordinated lighting creates a nondistracting backdrop that allows each musician’s talent to shine. And the talent present on the stage is truly something that must be seen—and heard—to be believed.

Placing the focus on ability, Urban attaches a GoPro to the end of his guitar that displays his work on the large screens around the stage. Known as a top-tier guitarist, the music man lets the crowd get an up-close view as he

strums away. It helps highlight just how incredible Urban is at what he does.

For more than two hours, the crew takes you on an upbeat

38 | 6.11.23 Las Vegas Magazine
Keith Urban’s Las Vegas residency puts his skills on full display

musical journey, featuring No. 1 hits, covers, duets and even songs never played before, while also making room for solos. In fact, the solos make for some of the

most exciting moments.

For a brief period during the proceedings, the spotlight shines on bassist Jerry Flowers, who plays a phenomenal rendition of

John Legend’s “All of Me.” And then Nathan Barlowe, who plays the guitar and just about everything else, electrifies the crowd with a cover of Lenny Kravitz’s “Are You Gonna Go My Way” on a musical device he created called “The Phantom.” Admittedly, the songs they choose to play may change night to night, but regardless, you’ll wish these solos were full-length shows on their own; they’re outstanding.

What really sets this show apart is the connection Urban makes with his audience. It’s very apparent that the room is fi lled with fans who adore Urban, and it’s equally apparent Urban cares they get a fulfi lling experience.

At the top, Urban takes the time to survey the audience’s posters and signs and pulls a lucky fan or two up on stage for a chat. That personal touch not only gets fans excited for the night to come, but it lets Urban’s charming charisma fi ll the room, captivating attendees. He also spends some time in the middle of the crowd on a small pedestal-like stage. It not only brings him closer to his fans by proximity, but it creates an atmosphere with an air of intimacy, rounding out the experience. This is a memorable concert, and if you’re a Keith Urban fan, it’s one curated to be exceptionally special for you.

It took 14 years for the musical partnership of Alison Krauss and Robert Plant to bear fruit for a second album. That’s longer than the history of Led Zeppelin and the same amount of years Krauss had lived on Earth before the fiddle prodigy recorded for the first time. Raise the Roof finds producer T-Bone Burnett once again providing exquisitely designed domiciles for Krauss’ bell-clear soprano to coinhabit and commingle with Plant’s misty mountain mastery.

There has been chatter about a third album, but for now there’s a tour to focus on. While the collaboration doesn’t take Krauss far out of the bluegrass and country lanes she’s navigated, picking up 27 Grammys along the way, Plant had to prepare for the delicate nuance of harmonizing with Krauss on the road by recalibrating his voice and getting into an Americana state of mind.

This time, he may consider staying in that zone after the tour to re-create that magic. Krauss is arguably Plant’s most significant collaborator after Jimmy Page, and he took similar approaches to entering partnerships with both. Plant first met with Page in 1968 and found common ground by playing records that revealed shared musical tastes from the blues to Joan Baez.

Plant had a similar meeting at the dawn of his partnership with Krauss, with both artists expanding each other’s musical awareness and jointly moving in the direction that would lead to 2007’s Raising Sand That album was destined to be recorded once Plant met Krauss at rehearsals for a tribute to Lead Belly. Krauss had provided vocals for “Down to the River to Pray” and “I’ll Fly Away” for Burnett’s soundtrack to O Brother, Where Art Thou? and brought him into the picture.

The result was a beautiful album rich with instrumental textures. Plant’s shimmering vocals entwine with Krauss’ celestial singing on songs such as “Please Read the Letter,” a scintillating arrangement of a Page/Plant composition, and

“Killing the Blues.” “Gone Gone Gone (Done Moved On)” brought twangy rockabilly flavor into the mix as only Burnett can conjure, while Gene Clark’s mournful “Through the Morning, Through the Night” proved to be the album’s standout track and its most enduring.

Raise the Roof doesn’t stray far from the blueprint established with Raising Sand, which took top honors in five categories at the 51st Annual Grammy Awards in 2009, including Album of the Year. The followup album, released in November 2021, was recognized with three Grammy nominations. Songs such as “Can’t Let Go” and “Trouble With My Lover” effectively evoked the vibe of Raising Sand without sounding like retreads. As songs are mostly covers, there was no danger of unconsciously reincarnating songs.

Standout tracks include lead-off “Quattro (World Drifts In)” by Southwestern duo Calexico and Everly Brothers composition “The Price of Love,” while the presences of Merle Haggard, Allen Toussaint, Bert Jansch and Lucinda Williams are deeply felt in a bountiful musical yield that could easily lead to a third harvest season.

Roma Hills home is the ultimate in luxury Private Sanctuary

When it comes to luxury in the Las Vegas Valley, there aren’t many better standard-bearers than Roma Hills, a guard-gated conclave of 130 homes nestled between Ascaya and the Dragon Ridge Golf and Country Club. Its homes are all distinctive and represent the very best in archi-

tecture and amenities. And a home has just become available there, a sprawling mansion that stuns in every detail imaginable.

This two-story estate, listed by Brian Nugent of IS LUXURY, offers every member of the family their own private sanctuary, with its five

bedrooms and six bathrooms spread across 6,592 square feet. And with a four-car garage, everyone gets a space to park.

The curb appeal of this home is irresistible, from its impeccably sealed driveway to its fully landscaped grounds. From the second

you step inside, it’s hard to not be seriously impressed by the sophistication throughout. The open floor plan feels incredibly spacious because of high ceilings, while large windows allow natural light into nearly every corner.

The double staircase is an opulent touch that is sure to impress visitors. (Speaking of visitors, make sure to set up movie nights with friends and family in this home’s dedicated theater room.)

The “wow!” factor continues with

an immaculate kitchen, complete with a bar island, a home gym, office space, even a working clock built into the wall that doubles as an art installation! The attention to detail in both the bedrooms and bathrooms is stunning, from flooring to wall detailing to fixtures.

As incredible as the interior is, the backyard, with its large pool and spa, pergola, firepit and fountain features, is truly an oasis of comfort and bliss, and it’s easily accessed, thanks to the home’s free-flowing

design that blurs the line between indoors and outdoors.

Another huge plus of living here, besides the security and the feeling of exclusivity, are the nearby schools! Roma Hills residents will be sending their kids to either John Vandenburg Elementary, Bob Miller Middle School or Foothill High School. –Ken
