The Choice Is Yours

For fi rst-time visitors to Las Vegas, our city can be a bit overwhelming when it comes to making decisions as to where to spend those hard-earned dollars. Heck, even if you try planning ahead, you’re likely to be second-guessing that list once you land at Harry Reid International Airport. After all, this city is all about getting your attention. Just driving to your hotel room, you’re going to be bombarded by advertisements for things you probably never even thought about.

This week’s issue of Las Vegas Magazine has a bit of everything to help you make informed decisions about various aspects of what our city does so well:

Dining. Who doesn’t love Italian food? And for a standard-bearer of that cuisine, it’s hard to beat Amalfi by Bobby Flay at Caesars Palace (“Eat, Flay, Love,” p. 28). And associate editor Kiko Miyasato has assembled some cold delights to help you get through these summer months (“9 Sweet Treats to Beat the Heat,” p. 40).

Entertainment. There are many concerts and shows vying for your business, but the return of Carrie Underwood to her Resorts World Las Vegas residency, Reflection, is one you don’t want to miss (“Powerful Talent,” p. 32).

Attractions. If you’ve got little ones in tow— and even if you don’t—there are two venues you really need to check out: Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay (“Fin the Beginning,” p. 38) and Dino Safari: A Walk Thru Adventure at Horseshoe Las Vegas (“Scales and Tails,” p. 14). Dayclubs. There are more pools in Las Vegas than ever before, and one of the newest and most distinctive is Élia Beach at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas (“The Islands Are Calling,” p. 24).

Just remember: When it comes to Las Vegas, there are no bad choices.

Reaction Time

Magician and prankster is ready to mystify in his Las Vegas residency

Michael Carbonaro lives for the reactions he provokes in others. If you’ve seen any episode of his show, The Carbonaro Effect, it’s hard to not be affected by how deeply he gets under people’s skin through a combination of magic and some really convincing acting. And it’s hard to not feel sheer joy at Carbonaro’s delight when he knows he’s pulled it off. He’s a one-man wrecking crew of pranking, and he’s now using his considerable skills on Las Vegas audiences in Michael Carbonaro: Live in Las Vegas

Even if you’ve never seen Carbonaro’s show, fear not: This production features liberal clips displaying his many magic talents in many different scenarios—including his personal favorite, recorded in a laboratory and featuring an ever-evolving alien life form (the reaction from his victim is one of the funniest things you’re ever likely to see).

His Las Vegas show is a grab bag of a bit of everything he’s famous for, from changing outfits in the blink of an eye to closeup illusions involving everything from playing cards and long pieces of string to newspapers and dry cleaning bags. His infectious spirit instantly puts every audience member at ease, even as they are being confounded by the goings-on.

In perhaps the show’s highlight, Carbonaro brings two volunteers onstage to engage in a demonstration of psychic powers. The thing is, it’s actually a joke being played on one of the volunteers—the other one is in on it, as is the audience. With Carbonaro’s coaching, everything is carefully choreographed, with a blissfully ignorant volunteer convinced he actually has the ability to read minds. Cruel? Maybe just a bit. Hysterical? Oh yeah.

Another highlight involves Carbonaro, some shaving cream, and a whole lot of imagination. Your reaction to this bit might be to try it yourself when you get back to your hotel room. And that would probably make Carbonaro the happiest man on Earth, as he’s all about your reaction. –Ken

Scales and Tails

Prehistoric reptiles come to Las Vegas in a new immersive adventure

I’d be willing to bet that I am not alone in wishing I lived in a world where I could visit an island theme park full of prehistoric critters, brought to life by scientists who extracted prehistoric DNA from a preserved mosquito—even though a certain film would warn against such endeavors. Luckily, Imagine Exhibitions brought the next best thing to Horseshoe Las Vegas with Dino Safari: A Walk Thru Adventure, which puts these magnificent beasts on display without the risk of Stone-Aged strays running amok on the casino floor.

The exhibit houses more than 30 dinosaurs, brought to life in animatronic form and accompanied by insightful scientific information, interactive elements and immersive settings. You’ll see dinos from each continent and all your favorites, like the T. rex and the Spinosaurus. One installation even features Nevada’s own Nevadadromeus, a recently discovered dinosaur native to this very region.

What’s fantastic about this adventure is that it’s not a “lookonly” experience. There are many bits that encourage using

your sense of touch to further explore this paleolithic world. With ambient sounds, brightly colored displays, virtual reality experiences and some real fossils, this experience offers satisfying sensory stimulation.

Dino Safari is a perfect outing for families with young kids. Visitors will receive a passport to Pangea, where they can mark which continents they’ve visited and what materials they’ve studied (as a bonus, there’s a pretty sweet coloring page in the back). A mid-exhibit jungle gym provides a perfect place for young paleontologists that have some excess energy to burn off, and the same room provides a little seating for those who’d rather rest a moment.

If you’re concerned one visit won’t satisfy, worry not. Multiple day passes are available, and Dino Safari has its own soundtrack by Ranger Justin. With songs like “Triceratops vs Pterodactyl Rap Battle” and “Dino Tail,” you can keep diggin’ the archaeologist vibes no matter where your next adventure takes you. –

Summer Sipping

Escape the heat and enjoy a cool cocktail at entertainment complex

Enjoying a bit of outdoor time during the summer in the desert can be a challenge, especially for visitors who haven’t become accustomed to dealing with the heat. Luckily, Topgolf Las Vegas’ air-conditioned bays and refreshing pools provide welcome reprieve from the high temperatures, and the new summer cocktails offer the perfect cooldown between rounds.

The quintessential hot-weather beverage, lemonade, makes two delicious appearances. Frozen spiked lemonade is made with vodka, lemonade and

lemon juice, and can be flavored with mango, strawberry or blackberry. The Pink Whitney Lemonade Golfbag is a shareable cocktail for two or more that features Pink Whitney vodka, Lo-Fi amaro, lemonade, Sprite and lemon, all served in a take-home novelty mug.

For island vibes, indulge in the Island Fire Marg, a lively libation that balances sweet, sour and spicy with Milagro reposado tequila, lime and pineapple juice, jalapeños and a Tajin rim. The Coconut Tiki Bull, with Bacardi rum, Red Bull Coconut, citrus sour, pineapple juice

and mint, hits the spot and presents another take-home cup opportunity.

Or try the whiskey-based Crown Apple Fizz and a tequila-and-Aperol cocktail, the Desert Pear Spritz. Alone, these drinks elevate the Topgolf experience, but paired with a soft pretzel charcuterie board, taco platter or steak platter with fries, onion rings, carrots and shishito peppers, they’re even better. –

Enthralled and Empowered

This male revue focuses on uplifting entertainment

It’s been five years since Magic Mike Live made its electrifying debut in Las Vegas. Back then it was at the Hard Rock Hotel, which has transformed into Virgin Hotels Las Vegas, but in August 2021, it reopened in a new, custom theater at Sahara Las Vegas. Las Vegas Magazine’s Brock Radke caught up with executive producer Vincent Marini for a whirlwind recap of what it’s been like to launch the sexy, provocative and positive show, including its international productions and the TV series Finding Magic Mike.

Does it feel like it’s been five years since you helped launch Magic Mike Live in Las Vegas?

It’s hard to believe. Since then we’ve done shows in London, Berlin and Australia, then again in Las Vegas after the (pandemic), and it really doesn’t seem like that long ago when we were there with Channing (Tatum) putting the first show together. It’s surreal.

The show is really going strong these days at Sahara. Does it feel

like Magic Mike has become the marquee entertainment offering at this iconic resort?

That is the idea. We spoke to a lot of different properties and had some unique opportunities, but I don’t know if there was another property where we felt like we could be the center of their universe. (Sahara) looked at this show that really is different and pretty unique among other shows in the city, and we all just felt like it was a perfect match. I think we’re in for a long and joyful run there.

How big of an impact did your HBO Max series Finding Magic Mike have on the popularity of the stage show?

Plenty of people want to see (TV show winners) Nate (Bryan) and Johnny (Dutch), but I think it’s more than that, it’s just taken the awareness of the live show to another level. The HBO show has opened people up that otherwise didn’t know about Magic Mike Live, and it’s had a huge impact on our success and hopefully the upcoming film

and what will hopefully be a second season of that series will continue to do the same.

Film director Steven Soderbergh was in Las Vegas for the grand reopening of the show at Sahara Las Vegas, and then it was announced he would be working on a third Magic Mike movie with Channing Tatum. Did the live show help with that?

(The filmmakers) have said the third movie in many ways is inspired by the live show. I know it inspired a lot of their thinking about how to structure it. I’m really excited to see what they have in store and they’re shooting the film now in the U.K.

How has the Vegas version evolved since it debuted?

There have been a lot of people recently coming to see it that I think otherwise may not have come, and they have a better understanding of what the message of the show is. It’s rare to find something that much fun that also has a powerful and empowering message. We do a pretty good job of exceeding expectations when you walk in that room, and I tell people it’s the most fun you’re going to have in 90 minutes. I’ve seen it hundreds of times and it’s still a lot of fun.

Chip-Tastic Dishes

Mexican food gets Flavortown touch

There are a few things that are obvious when you go to Guy Fieri’s El Burro Borracho in the Rio: It’s obvious you’re going to have a good time. (I mean, just look at that happy donkey on their logo.) It’s obvious that you’re going to get good food and drink. (Fieri is known for bold flavors in his dishes.) And it’s obvious you’re going to get plenty.

(Order the Trash Can Nachos and you’ll see what I mean.)

Those Trash Can Nachos come in a couple of sizes and the large is truly impressive, with tortilla chips layered with queso casero, black beans, pickled red onion, pico de gallo, crema and crumbled cotija cheese, plus cilantro and jalapeños, all in a faux trash can, which is inverted and released from the can. Ah, the snacking pleasure!

Street tacos are served three to an order, including carne asada, al pastor

and achiote chicken, plus borracho beans and cilantro rice. You’ll also find enchiladas, fajitas and namesake “burros” with the same meats as the tacos.

And the house-made churros are the perfect ending to the meal, rolled in cinnamon sugar and served with dipping sauce of Mexican chocolate and dulce de leche. –Nina King

The Magic Continues

Westgate magician announces the extension of popular show

I’ve seen Jen Kramer perform a handful of times—once, she even came to our offices at Greenspun Media Group!—and each time I come away marveling at her infectiously positive attitude. She just has a way of making you feel good about yourself. The fact that she’s an incredible sleight-of-hand magician almost feels like the icing on the cake.

In the five years she has performed The Magic of Jen Kramer at Westgate Las Vegas, she’s engendered nothing but goodwill among her fans and the property itself. And that goodwill has come back to Kramer 10 times over, both in the form of fans returning again and again to see her show and the recent announcement that she would be extending her residency into the foreseeable future.

“We are so proud of Jen and what she has accomplished over the last five years here,” said Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino president and general manager Cami Christensen.

“Our guests and team members love Jen, and we could not be more excited about extending her residency.”

That means many more shows with Kramer doing what she does best—interacting with audiences as she manipulates cards, makes drinks appear as if from nowhere, bringing smiles to the faces of numerous volunteers and generally making everyone feel just a bit better than they did coming in. –Ken Miller

Virgin Hotels Las Vegas’ 21-and-over pool is an idyllic escape

Élia Beach is a slice of paradise that can be found on Paradise Road at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas. In previous seasons, the pool was more of a party pool, but this year, the venue, atmosphere and amenities are more chill and elevated.

“Instead of the typical beach club atmosphere that Élia offered in previous seasons, the pool has taken on a paradisaical environment,” says Mark Childers, the director of operations for Wish You Were Here Group, which runs Élia Beach.

“With an emphasis on relaxation, the new Élia Beach offers refreshing craft cocktails, comfortable lounge areas, easy-listening music and even poolside massages by The Spa. From a culinary aspect, we have the same amazing chefs from Kassi Beach House. They have put together the perfect menu for Élia, and we are confident our guests will find that it isn’t your average poolside cuisine.”

Cocktails are delicious liquid treats with standout recipes like the signature Wild Safari mixed with

Grey Goose Essences Watermelon & Basil vodka, fresh watermelon juice, lime and Martini Fiero vermouth. Go classic with Élia’s pina colada— absolutely delicious and cooling— mixed with Bacardi rum, pineapple juice, lime and coconut cream.

The John Daly is Élia’s version of the classic Arnold Palmer with a mix of Haku vodka, lemonade and iced tea; the Paloma is another classic with Lunazul tequila, Fever Tree pink grapefruit soda, grapefruit and lime.

Besides its F&B offerings, Élia Beach really excels in its surroundings. Guests can relax on a sandy beach that leads into the cool, lagoon-like waters. For those that want to eat and drink in the shade, a spacious covered patio offers plenty of bar

“Élia Beach is for everyone 21 and older looking for a well-deserved break from their reality—without breaking their bank. Tania Rangel

Assistant manager puts in the hard work to find success

Despite becoming pregnant at a young age and dropping out of high school so she could raise her two kids, Tania Rangel, assistant manager of Fresco Italiano at Westgate Las Vegas, made it a goal to one day be successful.

When her kids got a little older, she earned her GED in addition to a medical assistant degree, and worked various jobs, including a stint as part-time hostess at Fresco Italiano seven years ago. So two years ago, when she heard Fresco Italiano was hiring, it was like returning home.

“When I heard that Fresco was hiring again, I came back,” she said. “At the time, they needed a hostess and a busser, but I wanted to move up. So, then I moved into the server position and have been a barback as well. I’m not afraid to jump in and try anything, do anything to help.” Six months ago, her hard work paid off and she moved into the management position and is on track to becoming a general manager.

As management, it’s Rangel’s responsibility to “make sure the restaurant has everything it needs to operate,”

• Libation • Italian Lemon Drop

Not only is the food authentic and dynamite, but Fresco Italiano’s specialty cocktail menu is also impressive. For an Italian twist on a classic, try the Italian Lemon Drop mixed with Malfy Con Limone gin, limoncello and fresh sweet and sour and a buzz button and sugar rim. –KM

she said. “Make sure every employee has what they need and is being heard.”

Rangel also puts in the hard work when it comes to guest experience— you can spot her out on the floor every night checking on her guests. “I’m happy and excited to be here, so I want to give guests that experience where they feel like it’s only them in the whole restaurant,” she said. “My drive every day is to make my kids proud of their mom. If I don’t accomplish my goals or continue to move up, I wouldn’t be happy with myself.” –Kiko

Celebrity chef’s Amalfi celebrates a region’s cuisine By Ken Miller 702.650.5965 Grilled fi sh

BACK IN THE OLD DAYS OF LAS VEGAS, when you said “seafood,” most would probably mean you mean the 99-cent shrimp cocktail that was sold in the millions and helped defi ne the early days of Las Vegas “cuisine.”

But oh, how times have changed. Las Vegas is now a city where any cuisine is possible—even fresh seafood in the middle of the desert. And it goes even beyond just ordering something o a menu; you can now go and pick out your specific fi sh, thanks to Amalfi by Bobby Flay, a true show kitchen and restaurant that celebrates that region of Italy and its traditions.

The restaurant is impeccably detailed, with light woods and circular blue-tile-lined containers full of ice and a variety of fresh fi sh (the types of fi sh will vary depending on the time of year). Fishmongers sta the displays and give you specifics on every single fi sh, allowing you to make an informed decision. It feels almost like picking out a new car as your salesman describes the bells and whistles—but without those pesky five years of payments.

At a bar curving away from the entrance, you can enjoy your choice

of delicious cocktails like the Nerano, made with Herradura blanco tequila, cappelletti aperitivo and lemon; the Limonata, a blend of Bacardi rum, limonata soda, lemon and mint; or the espresso martini, which utilizes Stoli vodka, New Deal co ee liqueur and espresso. All are a great way to fi re up your tastebuds for the fun to come.

If you do opt for the fresh fi sh, choose between enjoying it grilled whole or fi lleted, and pair it with your choice of Meyer lemon and capers, red pepper and Calabrian chili pesto, or salsa verde. There are so many combinations to choose from, you might fi nd yourself coming back for more within the week.

Seafood options pepper the Amalfi menu, from appetizers like shellfi sh fritto misto (shrimp and squid in addition to asparagus and tomato aioli) and charred octopus served with burnt orange and pancetta, to main courses like squid ink fettucine with lobster, shrimp, squid and fra diavolo. There’s also plenty of choices for meat eaters with a trio of prime certified Angus beef champs—a 10-ounce fi let mignon, 16-ounce New York strip and 24-ounce bone-in ribeye. They pair wonderfully with sides like green pea polenta (made with mascarpone, caramel-

ized shallots and Parmigiano) and crispy potatoes.

And fear not, vegetarians—Amalfi has you covered with appetizers like burrata served with red pepper, Calabrian chili and hazelnut pesto, and main courses like orecchiette smothered with eggplant Bolognese, basil and ricotta, agnolotti highlighted by arugula-ricotta, Sun Gold tomato sauce and crunchy garlic, and pasta “rags” with all-arrabbiata, Calabrian chili and bufala mozzarella.

You’ll defi nitely want to check out dessert here, as there’s something for everyone, from a dark chocolate hazelnut cake to Bobby’s pistachio sundae. But we’re partial to the triple lemon tarte, a citrusy delight including lemon curd, lemon meringue and a lemon-almond wafer.

Carrie Underwood is perhaps the reigning queen of country music, and very few come close to usurping her throne. At age 40, she has barely approached her prime and with her Strip headlining gig Reflection: The Las Vegas Residency at Resorts World Las

Vegas showing no signs of winding down, Underwood has secured a well-earned royal mantle. And she takes it all in stride. With all the accolades, recognition of her talent and a pair of legs that were genetically designed to optimize the e ectiveness of cut-o jean shorts, Underwood seemed destined to rocket to the top of the country music industry even if American Idol wasn’t the vehicle that led there. She was just an all-American girl from Muskogee, Okla.—the city made famous by Merle Haggard. Her talent was apparent by the time she was a teenager, but wise heads prevailed and allowed her to live a relatively normal life as a teenager. Her looks were undeniable though, and her vocal ability was

preternatural. She became a beauty contest participant, but the full potential of her talents wasn’t made apparent to the world until she auditioned for American Idol in 2004 with a rendition of Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me.” A country girl at heart, Underwood’s depth, range and potential as a recording artist were incrementally revealed during Season Four of Idol as she sang songs such as Heart’s “Alone,” the Everly Brothers’ “When Will I Be Loved” and (several times) Martina McBride’s “Independence Day.”

Underwood surpassed previous American Idol winners to become the most successful alumnus in the show’s history. Her debut album Some Hearts topped the country album charts and reached No. 2 on Billboard’s Top 200. She’d hit the top pop spot again with 2007’s Carnival Ride, 2009’s Play On, 2012’s Blown Away and 2018’s Cry Pretty. No other country singer has come close.

Underwood wows in her Vegas residency

That comfortable position allowed Underwood to indulge her spiritual side with 2021’s My Savior, which debuted at the top position on both the country and Christian album charts. Underwood proved her spiritual side was as strong as her commercial side and made clear that although she is completely convincing at assuming personas such as the betrayed lover (“Before He Cheats”) and the party girl (“Last Name”) she’s completely grounded in her faith.

That doesn’t stop her from looking devastating in the many outfits designed for Reflection, or rocking out. Underwood looks very comfortable playing power chords on her rhinestone-studded

Fender Mustang during “Church Bells” in her new Amazon special Carrie Underwood/Live and she’s scheduled to join Guns ‘n’ Roses as a special guest for several tour dates this summer.

She’ll likely leave the Mustang at home and just bring her voice to her upcoming Vegas shows (June 21, 23-24, 28, 30 and July 1). It’s powerful, versatile, emotive and adaptable to the e orts of the many Nashville songwriting talents she’s worked with. Underwood is fated to be the next Loretta Lynn, the next Dolly Parton, the next Reba McEntire, the next Faith Hill in the firmament of strong female country music voices. It’s a destiny she’s proven that she’ll take in stride. axs.com

Bachelors’ parties are known for being a wild time, but for your special stag do in Vegas, consider something a little more elevated. For the whiskey fan, the packages from The Barbershop Cuts & Cocktails that were introduced earlier this year might be perfect.

First, a little about The Barbershop Cuts & Cocktails—this upscale, working barbershop inside The Cosmopolitan gets patrons looking good with a variety of services and the speakeasy gets them feeling good with great cocktails, craft beers and food.

One of the best things about the private bachelor party packages here are that they include what a groom to be might already need to accomplish, that is, making sure that you look ready to face the wedding with grooming or cuts. What’s better than that is that both packages include a whiskey tasting.

For The Original, get the entire crew tidied up with a one-hour experience that includes a cleanup and a beard trim or shave, plus the

whiskey tasting, which is guided by a mixologist so you can learn as you sip. The whiskey flights consist of original Bulleit bourbon, Bulleit 10-Year-Old bourbon, Blade and Bow bourbon, George Dickel original bourbon and George Dickel Bottled in Bond whiskey. The Full Works include the same whiskey tasting, plus more extensive grooming in a two-hour package, with cuts, beard trims or shaves, waxings and hot towel lathers. It almost puts a ladies spa

day to shame. The packages start at $300 per person, but there are plenty of add-ons if you want a little extra, such as additional whiskey and bourbon tastings. Although it might seem obvious, you need to make a reservation, thus ensuring you get the attention you need.

After your party gets all spi ed up, consider pushing through the janitor’s closet to the speakeasy beyond, where you’ll find some kind of musical entertainment most nights—there’s karaoke on Tuesdays with a band and country rock on Wednesdays. Food and more drink may be in order—light bites include wagyu sliders and vegan sliders, pizza pockets, mini lamb gyros, hot

wings, spicy tuna, Hamachi tostadas and deep-fried Oreos.

And the drink menu here is extensive, with the mixologists providing a show as well. You might want to continue

your whiskey journey, and the cocktail menu features a variety of whiskeys and variations, including the Danger with Suntory Toki whiskey, Cointreau, and City Lights Shine Cherry Lemon white whiskey (this one is distilled locally in Las Vegas). If you still want to sip, there are plenty of choices, from the Bulleit that you just experienced to the many bottles available for purchase, including some rare ones. Just remember to imbibe with caution; no need for a Hangover situation here.

So, are you ready for the big day? Because your fiancée surely will be.

Circa Resort & Casino packages give bachelorettes a fun sendo before tying the

knot

So, the planning is almost over and the big day approaches. Getting the girls together in Las Vegas to send o the bride allows you to let down your hair and bond at the same time.

For your bachelorette party, take advantage of Circa Resort & Casino’s amenities with their “Bride’s Last Ride” Vegas Vickie bachelorette packages. If you don’t know, Vegas Vickie is the name of the giant neon cowgirl that kicked up her heels on Fremont Street for decades before being hung in the brand-new Circa casino.

For your soirée, there are two options to choose from, the Boots & Bling package and the Rhinestone Cowgirl package. And yup, these packages are suitable for everyone, even if you’re not a country gal.

If you prefer the daylife, reserve the Rhinestone Cowgirl package. You and three of your party will be picked up by a limo and whisked to Circa, where you can start o with mimosas at the Vegas Vickie’s lounge, where the original 25-foot tall Vegas Vickie sign hangs nearby, and have five pro photos snapped in front of the iconic neon sign. You’ll also get Vegas Vickie swag, including cowgirl hats, tote bags, boot koozies and badges for bride, maid of honor and bridesmaids.

Then head to Stadium Swim, the resort’s massive six-pool complex with enormous TV screens, where your daybed awaits. Chill out with drinks and

hunger at 8 East, where the pan-Asian cuisine is sure to satisfy; your party will have a $125 food and beverage credit. Some of the dishes you’ll want to look for include cumin lamb lollipops, ginger chicken dumplings, brisket fried rice and Asian tiramisu, with ladyfingers soaked in green tea instead of espresso.

food (there’s a $400 food and beverage credit) and dip your toes in the pool. The cost for the Rhinestone Cowgirl Package is $800 for up to four people; adding additional bodies is $200 each. You’ll need to cover any amount over the $400 food and beverage credit.

The Boots & Bling pack swings in a di erent direction. The bachelorette

party starts with a limo pickup, then you’ll stop in at Vegas Vickie’s to pick up your swag of custom gloves, koozies, cowgirl hats and badges for the bride and bridesmaids; sip on mimosas; and get your photo session completed. After that, take care of any pangs of

circalasvegas.com

Top it all o at the Legacy Club, Circa Resort & Casino’s upscale rooftop nightlife venue, with a cocktail course, where an experienced mixologist leads you through tastings and you indulge in specialty cocktails. For four people, the Boots & Bling package is $600, each additional person is $150, and you will need to pick up any overage if your 8 East credit is exceeded.

So, single girls, send o the bride in style as she begins her life of wedded bliss.

One good thing about the subtropical hot desert environment is there are no sharknados. There will likely never be a sharknado in Las Vegas, but if one does occur Shark Reef Aquarium is designed and built to withstand the wind-and-fi n phenomenon. Visitors can be secure in the knowledge they will be safely separated from the sharks by tempered glass regardless of what’s happening in the world outside of Mandalay Bay’s animal realm.

The environment inside Shark Reef seems like a world unto its own, a sort of cross between Indiana Jones archeology adventure and Jules Verne beneath-the-sea scenery. There is a jungle with ruins to cross through before shark-sighting, with a tropical scent being the fi rst indication upon entry that climate change is ahead.

There are a few hazards. One must evade a pool populated with piranha, a Burmese python that gives lethal hugs and a Komodo Dragon that looks cute but is an apex predator that would not work very well as a support animal.

The king of this jungle is a deceptively chill Johnson’s crocodile with an Ancient Sunken Temple for a castle. Its preferred method of capturing prey involves clamping down with its 70 teeth and drowning dinner before commencing consumption.

As long as visitors remain well-

behaved, there is little chance of becoming a meal for Shark Reef’s inhabitants. There are no boundaries for imaginations, though, so creating a scenario in which there are relics to hunt for is perfectly appropriate. Once the man-eating hazards are circumvented, there are more bucolic species to see. Placards provide fast facts about French angelfi sh, queen triggerfi sh and parrotfi sh in a learning experience that accompanies the length of the trek.

The most photographable scene on the premises is the shark tube, a walk-through, transparent tunnel that gives an indication of how much water and space it takes to provide homes

for hammerhead sharks far from the ocean. It’s less complicated to provide an abode for stingrays, and far less dangerous to touch a stingray than a hammerhead shark, so the rays reside in a touch pool.

It’s also not as hazardous to feed a stingray, so Shark Reef provides a Stingray Feed experience before the aquarium opens. The feeds are popular so booking several weeks in advance ensures exclusive touch pool time during the daily 9:15 a.m. feeding along with a guided tour of Shark Reef’s exhibits.

The zebra sharks are available for feeding sessions alongside Shark Reef’s animal experts who

enlighten guests as they participate in satiating appetites.

It’s better for civilians to watch profs feed the larger sharks in the 1.3-million-gallon aquarium than risk possibly becoming lunch. The main viewing area where the sharks circle a sunken wreck is as close as anyone really needs to be to ocean predators, although jellyfi sh swimming in their own spaces are more mesmerizing. Shark Reef Aquarium may be the best way to get up close and personal with white sharks without being carried away by a teeth-fi lled twister.

Welcome to Las Vegas and its season of triple-digit heat. (Gotta love that air conditioning!) In honor of the summer sun (holy moly, it’s hot!) we’ve rounded up nine spots to indulge in eyecatching, one-of-a-kind, over-the-top treats that will not only help you cool down but satisfy your sweet tooth to perfection.

Miracle Mile Shops, 702.485.1110

Cereal lovers unite and cool down with a fun treat—a Cereal Killerz milkshake. Pick your ice cream and then blend and top it with brands of cereal like Fruit Loops, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Fruity Pebbles, Apple Jacks, Frosted Flakes, Cocoa Pu s—the brands are seemingly endless. Or you can opt for one of their own recipes like the Poppin Pebblez Pop-Tart Shake or the Cookiez & Cream Pop-Tart Shake (both pictured).

Harmon Corner Retail Center, 725.777.1216

You can bring your friends or you can go all out on your own when you cool down with the monster King Kong Sundae (it is supposed to serve 12 people) at Sugar Factory. Twenty scoops of ice cream are covered in indulgences like caramelized banana, marshmallows, chocolate chip cookie chunks, glazed donut, vanilla cupcake, gummy bears, wa e cones, candy necklaces, rainbow sprinkles, whipped cream and more!

The Shops at Crystals, 725.255.9030

The vibes and décor inside Toca Madera are reason enough to visit, but it’s also where you can cool down with an elevated traditional Mexican dessert, the churro. Here, it’s made into the Churro Ice Cream Sandwich, beautifully constructed with churros on the top and bottom, holding a big scoop of vanilla ice cream in between, finished o with a drizzle of cajeta and dotted with fresh berries.

Resorts World, 702.676.7000

Dairy is so yesterday, and vegan has become all the rage. Whether you are lactose-intolerant or just cutting the

dairy from your diet, you can still indulge in some of the best ice cream that’s dairyfree at Craig’s Vegan. Order a float, sundae or shake or get a double scoop wa e cone of flavors like SoCal Salted Caramel, Sunset & Strawberry and Better Than Birthday Cake.

Grand Bazaar Shops, 702.736.4988

Cool down with a pineapple in hand at Island Time Floats Tiki Bar. Inside the hollowed-out fruit, the famous Dole soft serve ice cream can be combined with your choice of rum, making this dessert cocktail a 21-and-over sweet treat. The bar also o ers a wide array of flavored mojitos to help you chill out.

Aria, 702.590.8577

This cool treat is one unique dessert, and the coolest part, figuratively speaking, is that it looks like an actual lemon! The Sorrento Lemon is creatively designed to look exactly like the citrus fruit and when you slice into it, you’ll get cold bites of a sweet blend of yuzu granita, calamansi gel and almond cake.

The Venetian, 702.414.2337

Celebrate Pride Month and cool down with the Black Tap over-the-top Pride

CrazyShake. The rainbow explosion is a vanilla funfetti shake base with a vanillafrosted rim with Nerds candy, rainbow donut, rainbow unicorn pop, sour rainbow gummy rope and whipped cream.

Virgin Hotels Las Vegas, 702.693.5000

Feel like a kid again with this nostalgic dessert that goes big—the Giant HouseMade Ice Cream Sandwich. This sweet and frozen treat stretches across the plate and is stu ed with a pistachio gelato, marshmallow and chocolate.

The Linq Promenade, 702.794.3311

This truly is a delicious treat to beat the heat—trust me! And it’s long been a popular order at O’Sheas. The Bailey’s Milkshake combines the Irish cream with chocolate and ice cream for an adult treat that’s awesome to enjoy as you sit at the outdoor Blarney Bar along the promenade and get your people-watching on.

Luxury living is growing by leaps and bounds in the Las Vegas Valley, but one of the premier communities is the Summit Club, a 555-acre private residential lifestyle club community located between Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area and the Strip. Its amenities are far too many to list here, but first

and foremost among them are the 18-hole, Tom Fazio-designed golf course and some of the nicest homes you’ll find in Southern Nevada. And a home has recently become available here, one that has everything you could possibly want in a luxury home—and probably a bit more.

This two-story, 7,908-square-

foot palatial estate, listed by Ivan Sher of IS LUXURY, uses its space strategically in placing plenty of space between its four bedrooms and five bathrooms, and a three-car garage has more than enough space for all your vehicle needs, while the oversized motor court, accessed through a set of motorized private

gates, accommodates 12 additional vehicles for all your guests. And you will have guests!

Sitting on a 1.37-acre lot, this home provides stunning views of the Strip from multiple vantage points, and its architecture combines desert modern sophistication and minimalist design. A huge bonus of this home? It’s turnkey, with specially chosen designer furnishings, as well as artwork by photographer Peter Lik.

Points of interest can be found everywhere, from a wine room and

home theater to a great room with panoramic views. The chef-style kitchen features quartzite porcelain counters and an oversized island with bar seating, Wolf appliances, Sub-Zero refrigeration and a whole-home water filtration system. There’s also a separate catering kitchen with direct access to an exterior barbecue.

The integration between indoor and outdoors areas is seamless, thanks to wall-to-wall automated glass sliders, basalt stone floors and a gorgeous open patio that connects

to the main house.

Living accommodations in each room are top shelf. The guest quarters includes a Euro kitchen, while the primary suite features a glass slider wall and balcony seating area for viewing those aforementioned Strip views. In addition, the primary bathroom has dual vanities and showers, a makeup area and separate soaking tub.
