Style and Substance

What would a vacation trip be without a little shopping? Yes, we all look forward to experiencing the destination itself, but along the way, we all inevitably head to the shops for souvenirs, products to replace the ones we either forgot to bring with us (or the ones the TSA made us throw away!), and gifts for loved ones back home. It’s a huge part of the overall experience, and nowhere in the world is that activity more rewarding than Las Vegas. We have some of the most spectacular shopping centers you’ll fi nd anywhere—not only all the brands you’ve been wanting to check out, but architectural details that transport you to a whole other world. Even if you don’t buy anything, just window shopping here can leave you with some serious memories.

This issue is dedicated to one of the most enjoyable retail centers in town, Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood Resort. We’ve highlighted some of the fun poolside gear you can buy right now (“In the Swim,” p. 32). Get out your credit card and get ready to achieve the perfect summer look!

Whether your new style is perfect for dayclubs or nightclubs, we’ve got the perfect spot: Resorts World Las Vegas, which this week host Hartbeat Weekend, featuring not only performances by comedy superstar Kevin Hart, but a wide array of DJ performances at Ayu Dayclub, a poker tournament at Alle Lounge on 66 and more (“The Stars Come Out to Play,” p. 24).

And there are plenty of great o erings across town this week: Charlie Puth at The Cosmopolitan (“Naked Ambition,” p. 14); restaurants like Top of the World at The STRAT (“Sights, Steaks and Sweet Sips,” p. 12); and UFC 290 at T-Mobile Arena (“Fight to Unite,” p. 38).

There’s a style out there for everyone—we hope we helped you fi nd yours this week.

Sights, Steaks and Sweet Sips

Top of the World has long been a must-visit Las Vegas destination, and it’s not just for the amazing views—although with its ever-rotating dining room, the vistas are indeed incredible. No, Top of the World is also a great place to pop the question, get married (yes, wedding packages are available, including reservations for up to 10 guests and a mini wedding cake) and, of course, have a fine-dining experience that you’ll be raving about for years to come.

The room itself is impressive—it’s easily one of the largest dining rooms to be found on the Strip, and all tables are perfectly placed within the space; no matter where you sit, you’ll enjoy that renowned view, all while enjoying some of the nicest servers you’re ever likely to meet.

Start your evening off with signature cocktails ranging from vodka-based (the Creamsicle features Ketel One, Caravella Orangecello D’Italia, Licor 43 Original, kumquat, aquafaba and candied orange), to rum-based (the Pink Panther contains Bacardi Limon, lemon, coconut ube molasses and electric dust) and gin-based (the Clover Club blends Tanqueray No. Ten, Cocchi Rosa Americano, lemon, raspberry, rose and raspberry foam).

There are so many surprises in the appetizers section. Crab fans will love the Creole-style lump crab toast served with Cajun butter, while vegetarians will flip for both the lemon and oregano whipped feta cheese (served with crudite, lavash and chili pepper jam) and wild mushroom ravioli (flavored here with toasted hazelnuts, Calabrian chili, guanciale and pickled beech mushrooms).

The fun continues unabated with a widely varied entrée section. From carnivore to vegan, everything you love is represented here, from the Kurabuto pork chop and smoked half chicken to Parmesan-crusted salmon and vegan stuffed squash. The steak selection is second to none, from a 16-ounce bone-in filet and 12-ounce New York strip to a prime tomahawk chop and 12-ounce wagyu rib cap. Make sure to pair these great cuts with sauces ranging from Bearnaise to peppercorn, and don’t forget sides like charred corn succotash with tarragon cream and fava beans, roasted haricot verts with smoked almonds, whipped ricotta and a Dijon and tarragon emulsion, and fried Brussels sprouts smothered in spicy brown sugar bacon, sherry vinegar and Parmesan cheese. –Ken Miller

Naked Ambition

Pop prince, who has evolved from rising star to risqué romantic, performs on the Strip

Charlie Puth has done an excellent job of shaking off his boy wonder reputation. Puth, reputed to have had perfect pitch at an early age, is unafraid to be flirty and risqué in his relations with the press and his social media posts. Lately, if he’s not actually naked, he’s talking about being naked, musing about writing songs while naked or for being naked, or recalling taking a pause during a romantic interlude (ostensibly while naked) to record a voice note for a song idea.

As Miley Cyrus twerked away her Hannah Montana history, so is Puth creating an image that obscures his origin as a child prodigy. His mother began piano instruction when the New Jersey native was old enough to sit up on a piano bench and, by 2009, he was posting cover songs to YouTube. He was introduced to the public by Ellen DeGeneres, but after a deal with DeGeneres’ record label fell through he went back to studying and attended New England Music Camp, Manhattan School of Music and Berklee College of Music.

Seasoned in all aspects of recording and possessing a distinct upper range, Puth hit Hollywood and established himself. By 2015, he had a No. 1 hit with Wiz Khalifa, “See You Again,” and followed up with “Marvin Gaye,” featuring Meghan Trainor, and “One Call Away.” He’d break into the Top 10 again with Selena Gomez on “We Don’t Talk Anymore” and in 2017 with “Attention.”

He’s playing his hits now on The Charlie Live Experience Tour, with his next album currently a work in progress. Puth had shown a flair for the dramatic in his videos, most notably for his latest collaboration (with Dan + Shay) “That’s Not How This Works.” It should not be surprising if he is cast as a romantic lead in a future box office hit, which means now is the time to catch him live while he’s as focused on how he sounds as on how he looks. –

Movie Memories

Become a part of your favorite animated worlds

When it comes to entertainment excellence, it’s hard to compete with Disney. Just the mention of the word sets children into a frenzy, whether it’s scheduling a trip to Disneyland or Disneyworld or getting ready to stream the latest movies or series. Parents will no doubt experience the same reaction from the kids once they learn that there’s a brand-new Disney-themed immersive experience on the Vegas Strip.

In collaboration with Lighthouse Immersive Studios, the Walt Disney

Animation Studios has unveiled Immersive Disney Animation at Lighthouse ArtSpace Las Vegas (found at The Shops at Crystals). All your Disney favorites are featured here, from The Lion King, Frozen and Peter Pan to Encanto, Zootopia and Pinocchio, but not like you’ve ever seen them before.

“Just imagine journeying through Zootopia with Judy Hopps, diving to the ocean floor with Ariel, flying on a magic carpet with Aladdin, and stepping into Casita with Mirabel and the

family Madrigal,” Lighthouse Immersive founder Corey Ross said. “The work lends itself brilliantly to the immersive experience, and I am confident this program will give our guests the opportunity to be engulfed in the world of Disney, making them feel like they’re standing next to their favorite character and seeing the world through their eyes.” –Ken

That Tuscan Feel

Westgate Las Vegas Italian restaurant has all your favorites

There are few styles of food that provide a satisfying meal more than Italian. Just the mention of that word evokes images of heaping plates of pasta, large meatballs, bread baskets that empty as soon as they hit the table, and lots and lots of wine poured and shared. It’s practically Pavlovian to want to head to the nearest Olive Garden when you have a large group to feed, but if you’re at Westgate Las Vegas, you don’t have to all pile into an Uber. The hotel has one of the best Italian experiences in town, courtesy of Fresco Italiano.

The décor of this open, airy space, located in the property’s restaurant row, makes you feel like you’re in Tuscany with its stone patio, elegant dining room and even a train-car excursion, with the countryside flowing past. You’ll want to order a bottle of wine upon taking your seat, but don’t sleep on some of the wonderful signature cocktails available, especially ones like the Baked Apple Mule, a clever twist on the Moscow version with Crown Royal Regal Apple and Woodford Reserve, fresh lime, ginger beer and apple bitters, or the Italian Paloma, a true classic with blanco tequila, elderflower, Meletti 1870, lime and San Pellegrino Pompelmo.

From there, get ready for fabulous appetizers, including calamari served with Calabrian chilis, garlic aioli and marinara sauce, meatballs made with slow-braised beef, pork and veal and served with burrata, Grana Padano and marinara, and a bruschetta trio of fig mostarda, pistachio-marinated eggplant and tomato and basil pesto.

From pizzas and pastas to mains like chicken Parmesan and branzino, there are simply no wrong choices here. Everything at Fresco Italiano is made from fresh, locally sourced ingredients, and they all pair wonderfully with sides ranging from creamy polenta and roasted mushrooms, flavored with rosemary and blended with Parmesan, to Romanesco broccoli, served with toasted hazelnuts, garlic butter, orange and Grana Padano.

Don’t forget dessert! We personally love the bombolini (lemon and ricotta doughnuts served with raspberry, crème anglaise and Nutella dipping sauces), but we certainly couldn’t blame you for ordering the affogato, a combo of vanilla gelato, Nutella, chocolate ganache, candied hazelnuts and espresso. –Ken Miller

The Spices of Life

Flamingo drag queen production is a celebration of fabulousness and sashaying

The cast of RuPaul’s Drag Race Live! is like a spice rack with new flavors being rotating into use for seasonal menus. This summer, new cast members bring more international zest to the mix as the show marches toward its 500th performance of sashaying, turns to the left and fashionable flamboyance. RuPaul’s Drag Race UK season two winner Lawrence Chaney joined in May and Drag Race France host Nicky Doll, pictured, entered the picture last month, while Drag Race Thailand host Pangina Heals arrives for the first time on July 17.

Heals will be followed July 29 by RuPaul’s Drag Race season 14 finalist Bosco, who refers to herself as “the demon queen of Seattle.” The four new dragsters join a rotating cast that currently includes RuPaul’s Drag Race season 14’s Daya Betty and Jorgeous, Derrick Barry from season 8 and Kennedy Davenport from season 7. The latter two went on to star in RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars

RuPaul’s drag franchise has turned into a career ladder for participants, with Las Vegas being one of the higher rungs. It’s one that season 12 winner Jaida Essence Hall has climbed to All-Stars and now Live!, where she takes over as host July 15. Overseeing the pageantry of competitive lip-syncing, runway strutting and looking fabulous has to be one of the toughest jobs on the Strip, but it’s the toughest one Hall will ever love. –

No-Holds-Barred Comedy

Bringing back Borscht Belt comedy for a new era

Easily offended? Think that comedy should have some restrictions when it comes to the punchlines? Do you consider yourself “woke”? Then three-man comedy show Jew Man Group might get you worked up, as one of the first lines you’ll hear when the show starts is this is the place “where woke comes to die.”

Indeed, the comedy show, inspired by Jewish comics like Mel Brooks, Rodney Dangerfield and Billy Crystal, pushes the envelope in content, but what’s unexpected is that the experience rings too true

at times and gets one agreeing that comedy really should be a no-holdsbarred take on society.

The 70-minute show gives a one-two punch on today’s headline-making politics and combines it with hysterical commentary on everyday life including marriage, sex, kids and work. The stand-up is mixed with ventriloquism, skits, impersonations, musical parodies and audience participation.

The three comedians—Rick Michel, Rich Natole and Joel Leder—each possess biting wit and im-

peccable comedic timing, and each get their moment to shine solo in the spotlight, but it’s a laugh riot when the three join up for the group bits.

The throwback comedy comes from a time when race, religion, sexual and political preference, and economic and social status was ripe for the comedic picking—so come with an open mind and remember: The show is all in good (and funny) fun! –Kiko Miyasato

30 YEARS AND COUNTING

AND LUCK HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH IT

Presented by

Las Vegas, 1993 – It began with an audacious vision to grow “a flower in the desert.” 30 years later, that dream has blossomed into a globally renowned dynasty of entertainment that’s captivated more than 80 million spectators.

This year, Cirque du Soleil celebrates several Vegas milestones: June marks the 10th anniversary of Michael Jackson ONE at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, October will witness the 25th year of “O” at Bellagio Resort & Casino, and in December, Mystère, the show that started it all, will commemorate an extraordinary 30 years.

Prior to Cirque’s arrival, Las Vegas entertainment was known for its crooners, comedians, showgirls, and glitzy stars, but when Guy Laliberté, Gilles Ste. Croix, and Franco Dragone debuted Mystère at the Treasure Island Hotel and Casino in 1993, it marked a turning point for the entertainment capital of the world.

Today, with six resident shows punctuating the Las Vegas Strip, Cirque du Soleil is synonymous with live entertainment, becoming a virtual rite of passage for every type of visitor.

With more than 60,000 performances, perhaps the most impressive feat Cirque has pulled off is its staying power. In the high stakes landscape of Las Vegas entertainment, shows come and go, but Cirque has managed to do what countless others have not: keep the magic fresh.

Whether it’s new acrobatics, refreshed musical scores, or a seemingly endless pipeline of elite performing artists, each resident show is in a constant state of creative evolution. “30 years is spectacular,” reflects Laliberté. “Yes, it’s a surprise, but also not, because in the creative process, we consider every element that could make a show live that long.”

“We’re proud to have played a role in Las Vegas’ evolution to the city it is today,” says Eric Grilly, President of Resident Shows Division, “but like us, Las Vegas is always growing and changing, and we plan to continue to be a major part of all the future evolutions to come.”

The Stars Come Out to Play

These days, it seems like Kevin Hart is everywhere. On TV, making his debut in 2001’s Undeclared; in tons of movies, including a starring role in the Jumanji remake film franchise; on the radio with self-help audio books; on social media, where he shares his personal life with more than 170 million followers; and onstage doing stand-up with his latest comedy special, 2020’s Zero F**ks Given. So, it only makes sense for the comedy giant to take over a whole hotel. That hotel is Resorts World Las Vegas, and Hart’s taking it over July 6-9.

Dubbed Hartbeat Weekend , it’s a nonstop celebration of comedy, music, poker and parties. The property is sure to be crawling with celebrities from across different mediums, beginning with musical juggernaut Ludacris taking over Zouk Nightclub on July 6 to perform and host a birthday party for Hart. Zouk is the nighttime spot for other special performances throughout Hartbeat Weekend, with J. Cole on tap for July 7 and then “First Class” singer Jack Harlow onstage at Zouk the following night on July 8.

If daytime dalliances are more your speed, or you want to party both night and day, Hartbeat has you covered with shindigs going off at Resorts World’s pool paradise, Ayu Dayclub. Famed company Rock the Bells, created by hip-hop star LL Cool J in 2018 to celebrate all things hip-hop culture, takes over the pool club beginning July 7 with special surprise performances for hip-hop heads. Leading the charge is a special set by RL Grime on July 7, world-renowned EDM DJ Kaskade taking over the decks on July 8 and a special performance by PartyNextDoor on July 9.

Throughout Hartbeat Weekend, guests can catch the comedy arm of the celebration every evening at Jalisco Underground. Beginning Resort welcomes a celebrity-packed Hartbeat Weekend

Kevin Hart

later in the evening, this is the after-hours hot spot for catching oneof-a-kind comedy performances and world-class comedians onstage (you never know who might pop in to do a bit!) The venue, which truly is located underground, is an upscale, dimly lit bar serving a wide variety of tequilas—and is so intimate that you’ll surely be rubbing shoulders with celebrities.

Stick around the entrance to Alle Lounge on 66 to see a sea of celebrities, 50 hand-selected competitors from the worlds of sports, movies, music, comedy and more, as they go card-to-card during the Hartbeat Poker Invitational, which begins July 8. The no-limit hold ’em game has a $100,000 buy-in and a $5 million pot. Kevin Hart himself is facing off against longtime poker rival Antonio Esfandiari. Together, not only will they put each other all-in, but their friendly rivalry will provide color commentary, poker insights and comedic banter during a live broadcast throughout the twoday game.

Hart doesn’t leave fans without a taste of his comedy, though—Time even honored his comedy prowess

when the magazine named him as one of the 100 most-influential people in 2015—when he takes the Resorts World Theatre stage July 7-8 to perform his final, record-breaking Reality Check Tour shows.

So if you’re hungry for those celeb-filled social media posts, like to party with the stars, or are just

down for some memorable comedy and music, then make sure to get over to Resorts World Las Vegas this week for the heavy-hitting Hartbeat Weekend. The fun will never stop.

Manuel Sanchez

General manager combines his love of art and food

For Manuel Sanchez, the general manager of Tom Colicchio’s Heritage Steak at The Mirage, creating art and running a restaurant are one and the same—and both are passions of the San Francisco native.

After discovering a talent for painting, he attended the art institute in his hometown, then furthered his studies as a classically trained artist in Chicago. To supplement his income as a self-proclaimed “starving artist,” he began to work in restaurants, starting off as a server and eventually moving

into management. His hard work in food and beverage eventually brought him to the mecca of the industry, Las Vegas, in 2015. After managing a few high-volume, high-end eateries, he landed at Heritage Steak two years ago. “Now I manage this carnivorous jungle,” Sanchez says about the steakhouse.

Besides running the restaurant, helping the staff and interacting with guests, Sanchez is also responsible for creating Heritage’s special events like the Heritage Wine Dinner every last Wednesday of the month and the

• Libation • Heritage Old-Fashioned

Before your meal comes, order a classic cocktail like the Heritage Old-Fashioned. (With dinner, Sanchez suggests choosing a glass of wine from the more than 300 selections.)

craft beer and small bites class, Sippin School, every first Friday of the month (visit The Mirage website for tickets).

“This restaurant represents art on a plate for me, the art of eating and sharing a meal together, tasting something that brings back memories and feelings,” Sanchez says. “You can have an experience with a cocktail, the design of the restaurant, the design of the food on the plate, the design of the cocktail—it’s all art. Restaurants are my happy place as well. If I’m not painting, I’m eating and drinking.” –Kiko

Get your fix of flavor while you’re in Las Vegas

With the Fourth of July this week, it seems like the right time to tell you about some of Las Vegas’ best places for barbecued, grilled and smoked food. This is just a smattering what you can find, so don’t rake us over the coals if your favorite isn’t here.

International Smoke (MGM Grand, 702.891.3922) is so named because it’s what it does. A collaboration between Michael Mina and Ayesha Curry, International Smoke features such items as wood-fired steaks, smoked Korean-style prime short rib, and smoked St. Louis-cut pork ribs, replete with spice and

finished with sauces like American barbecue sauce and Korean sesame-gochujang, if you like the really spicy life.

Ribs are stars on the menu at plenty of other Vegas restaurants, like Mabel’s BBQ (Palms, 866.752.2236) and Saltgrass Steak House (Golden Nugget, 702.474.2588). At celebrity chef Michael Symon’s Mabel’s BBQ, find everything from brisket to chicken on the barbecue menu. Combos can feed you and your crew—the Overtime is comprised of a rack of ribs, pulled pork, chopped brisket and smoked chicken wings with sides.

Saltgrass Steak House’s slowcooked ribs are advertised as “fallo -the-bone,” and you can get them alone or with grilled chicken or fried shrimp. The steakhouse has plenty of other options, inspired by an open campfire, so don’t feel like you’re roped into barbecue. As a side, think about the smoked mac and cheese. Further along on Fremont Street, Circa Resort & Casino’s Project BBQ (702.726.5491) serves out of an actual food truck, with smoked barbecue ribs, of course, but also a plethora of other foods like hot link bites in Carolina BBQ sauce, the Project Platter, piled with brisket, pulled pork, barbecue chicken and sausages. Tacos are available in smoked pulled pork, barbecue chicken and chopped brisket. Featherweight champs brawl to settle it all at UFC 290

Itineraries may vary for mixed martial arts fans during this year’s edition of UFC’s International Fight Week (July 3-9), but most every road will lead to T-Mobile Arena for Saturday night’s double-header of championship fights at UFC 290. While Brandon Moreno’s defense of his flyweight belt against Alexandre Pantoja is a customary championship bout, with Moreno’s height and reach advantage giving him an edge in the 125-pound class, featherweights Alexander “The Great” Volkanovski (right) and Yair “El Pantera” Rodriguez (left) clash to unify their respective titles and become the undisputed 145-pound Ultimate Fighting champion.

Featherweight champion Volkanovski is currently considered the second-best pound-for-pound fighter in the UFC, which observes its 30th anniversary this year, and will probably draw the lion’s share of media attention during Fight Week. A defeat of the Australian assault machine by interim featherweight title holder Rodriguez would raise the Mexican mauler’s profile exponentially.

Joe Rogan called Rodriguez “one of the wildest (expletive deleted)’s that’s

ever fought in MMA” on the May 27 edition of Joe Rogan Experience podcast. “Yair has some of the craziest kicks,” Rogan told guests Shane Gillis, Mark Normand and Ari Shaffir. “He’s got this tae kwon do background but

he does all the wild (expletive deleted). … He’s wicked and he’s really hard to figure out.”

Rangy Rodriguez made his mark fighting veteran brawler B.J. Penn in January 2017 when he knocked the

which were divided when he added mass to challenge Islam Makhachev for his lightweight title at UFC 284 in February. He lost but was one of two participants awarded “Fight of the Night” honors.

Volkanovski temporarily vacated his featherweight title for that lightweight bout in his homeland. On that same card, Rodriguez, who until then was best known for being an The Ultimate Fighter: Latin America winner, defeated Josh Emmett with a triangle choke submission for the newly created Interim Featherweight Championship.

A win for Rodriguez could lead to a shakeup in the pound-for-pound rankings. Heavyweight Jon Jones is No. 1 and Makhachev is No. 3. Rodriguez is not in the Top 15, possibly due to an ankle injury in 2020 and subsequent suspension for not being available for drug testing. Volkanovski continues to ride high as a UFC star despite the lightweight loss and needs a victory to continue shining brightly.

veteran fighter down with a vicious back roundhouse kick and pounded him into unresponsiveness with a blitz of lightning-fast fists. Volkanovski, who Rogan referred to as “the baddest (expletive deleted) alive,” has

a slight edge in reach but gives up 5 inches in height to Rodriguez.

Deflecting kicks and getting Rodriguez on the ground are likely parts of Volkanovski’s plan to unify the featherweight championships,

Rodriguez, Moreno and Pantoja are part of that constellation of shining stars at UCF 290 along with Jimmy Crute and Alonzo Menifield, who previously faced each other in UFC 284. Elsewhere on the card, former middleweight champ Robert Whittaker takes on Dricus Du Plessis, and Dana White’s Contender Series signee Bo Nickal looks to remain undefeated in his match wth Tresean Gore.

Your Home Awaits

Turnkey Summerlin home is perfect for large families

Summerlin in Southern Nevada is one of the most sought-after master-planned communities in the country. One of its more exciting offerings is the Sky View Collection at the guard-gated community of Mesa Ridge, consisting of two-story homes by Toll Brothers. There’s

something for everyone here, and a home has just become available for sale, one that will accommodate large families.

This 4,400-square-foot Calico model, listed by Paul Conforte with XPand Realty, contains four bedrooms and five bathrooms, guaran-

teeing everyone their own private sanctuary. There’s also a three-car garage. The first thing you’ll notice as you drive up is the pleasant desert landscaping leading to a front courtyard and covered entry. It’s a home with a very welcoming feel, and that feeling continues as you make your

way through a two-story foyer. As an added bonus, this particular model has been completely decorated and furnished—move in immediately!

The highlights here are too numerous to mention: a two-story great room begs you to host numerous get-togethers; the kitchen features a large center island with a breakfast bar, not to mention plenty of counter and cabinet space, dual walk-in pantries and spacious prep area; the roomy and luxurious primary suite includes a private covered deck and balcony, dual

walk-in closets, deluxe primary bath with dual vanities, large soaking tub, glass-enclosed shower and dual private water closets.

Want more? How about a sizable bonus room (use your imagination!), secondary bedrooms with sizable closets and private full bathrooms (one of the rooms has a private covered balcony), a large office with private covered patio, and a first-floor guest bedroom suite off the front courtyard with a walk-in closet and private full bathroom.

But it’s not just the home itself

you’ll enjoy here. Mesa Ridge also features access to tennis court, basketball courts and walking trails, all with great views of the surrounding mountains. There’s also a state-ofthe-art fitness center with a pool and clubhouse. (You’re sure to make more than a few friends at the social lounge.) And there are plenty of parks that are perfect for picnics or family gatherings. –Ken
