Music to Our Ears

Is there a better city for live music than Las Vegas? Go to any corner at any spot on the Strip, and odds are you’ll see a marquee for some of your favorite recording artists. This week alone, you can see pop superstars like Kelly Clarkson, who’s beginning a series of shows at the Bakkt Theater at Planet Hollywood Resort on the heels of her latest hit album, Chemistry (“Since She’s Been Gone,” p. 32); Katy Perry, who’s returning to her ridiculously successful residency, Play, at Resorts World Las Vegas (“Fantasy Lands, p. 18); guitarist par excellence Joe Bonamassa, who’s ready to rock at The Cosmopolitan (“Choose the Blues,” p. 14); and Steven Adler, a founding member of Guns N’ Roses, who’s bringing his signature sound to Golden Nugget (“American Drummer,” p. 21).

Of course, much of the reason for our current wealth of riches can be credited to the trailblazers who came before, the iconic performers who put Las Vegas on the map, all at one singular property: Westgate Las Vegas. In this issue, associate editor Kiko Miyasato takes a very deep dive into the evolution of the property’s storied theater over the last 53 years, an evolution that has seen the likes of Liberace, Barbra Streisand and Elvis Presley make our city the entertainment destination it is today. (“A Legendary Tale,” p. 34). Its latest performer, Barry Manilow, is a reminder of how important the venue remains in that regard.

Elsewhere in this issue, we’ve got everything you need to plan the perfect week, from amazing restaurants like Toscana Ristorante & Bar by Eataly at Park MGM (“Italy’s Finest,” p. 28) and the casual yet elevated 1228 Main (“Let’s Break Bread,” p. 17 ) to shopping, drinks and dining at visually stimulating spaces in The Forum Shops at Caesars (“A Daylong Delight,” p. 20).

Enjoy the best of everything this week!

Drifting and Driving

DJ’s famous sounds abound during his weekend show

When Tijs Verwest became known to the world as Tiësto, he joined a pantheon of pioneering DJs such as Sasha, John Digweed, BT and Paul Oakenfold who shepherded electronic dance music from its newbeat phase to the acid house and trance eras.

Tiësto had made a name for himself in his native Holland by the time rave culture emerged, but his adoption of the trance sound and enthusiastic endorsements from figures such as Oakenfold led him to being the first superstar DJ of the 21st century.

He remains the most well-known and likely the wealthiest DJ in the history of electronic dance music. Tiësto has endured at the top by keeping things fresh for himself and his followers, delving into pop and making stylistic pivots when he felt the need to mix things up. He’s remained prolific throughout his career, with his latest album, Drive, a result of his time away from the turntables during the pandemic.

Clubgoers who catch his Las Vegas residency at Zouk Nightclub this week will not only get to dance to tracks from Drive in all their subwoofer glory, but will likely hear his latest single, “Drifting,” which has been praised by the dance music press for its hypnotic homage to breakbeat since he debuted it at the Ultra Music Festival in South Beach earlier this year.

Tiësto is a family man now but still travels intrepidly with a state-of-the-art production that seems powered by waves of his hand. He revealed a crucial factor in his consistent success in an interview with Las Vegas Magazine in May 2022: “The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that you shouldn’t stress about anything,” he said. “Just really enjoy what you’re doing; enjoy the moments. If you worry too much about what can happen, you can hold yourself back.” –

Choose the Blues

Master guitarist heads into The Cosmopolitan this week

This fall, guitar icon Joe Bonamassa will release Blues Deluxe, Vol. 2, a two-decades-in-the-making follow-up to his best-selling album, Blues Deluxe. Assembling this new collection of original songs and reinterpretations of classics was a definitive mission for the 46-year-old musician whose career began as a 12-year-old prodigy opening for B.B. King. It showcases the evolution of Bonamassa’s artistry, something that will also be on display on Aug. 4 at the Chelsea at The Cosmopolitan. Las Vegas Magazine ’s Brock Radke recently checked in with the guitarist.

You just wrapped up a European tour in July. Which international destinations and audiences seem to care most about blues music?

I’m kind of an anomaly in the sense that we draw a pretty decent crowd everywhere we go. I don’t really see one territory that really goes for the blues, but Europe is where it started for me and then I brought it back to the United States. As far as blues and jazz, there are people that will tell you there’s more of a market for that in Europe, and we see that to a point. They do appreciate more traditional American music en masse than they do here, but it’s a case-by-case basis.

When you decided to put together Blues Deluxe, Vol. 2, did you find yourself revisiting where you were as a musician 20 years ago? Blues Deluxe was the first album that kind of struck a nerve with our fanbase, I guess at that point our new fanbase. Instead of remastering it or doing something like that to acknowledge it 20 years later, I wanted to ask the question, “Am I as good as I was 20 years ago?” It’s a good question to ask yourself over the years—“Can I still bring it like when I was 25?” Honestly, I think I’m a better singer than I was, and also a better

bandleader and musician than I was before, but it wasn’t a foregone conclusion.

How did the process of selecting material for the album change after two decades?

Vol. 2 definitely has more melody to it than the first one. Twenty years ago, as a singer, I could shout in one key. It was hard for me to hold a tune. Now I can sing a song like “Twenty-Four Hour Blues,” and I couldn’t do that (before) … I was more of a straight-ahead blues shouter. So now we have more options, much more options.

You also recently launched the Journeyman company, which is basically a one-stop shop for independent musicians as a label and management and promotion company. That’s what we’ve been doing for the last 20 years of our lives. I don’t have a booking agent and I wouldn’t want one. We do everything inhouse, and when you streamline how many people are involved in your process, it becomes a lot more efficient. The key is to make sure you have the artist’s best interests in mind, and for me, it’s a way of giving back. We have two great artists on the label now in Joanne Shaw Taylor and Robert Jon & The Wreck.

It must be nice to be bringing your tour back to Las Vegas.

It’s been a minute since we played Vegas, and it’s changed so much there in the last 10 or 12 years. It’s been amazing to see the residencies and so many different acts, and it’s our first time at The Cosmopolitan. We used to go every two years (to Vegas) until the pandemic kicked us off the merry-go-round, so it’s nice to get that back.

Let’s Break Bread

Newest addition to Arts District restaurants makes instant fans

The burgeoning Arts District area in Las Vegas is home to several eateries and the newest of them, 1228 Main, is an elegant yet casual space that welcomes guests in. The brick-faced building near the corner of Colorado and Main is easily walkable from anywhere nearby. Inside is a bar on one side and a dining room and bakery counter on the other, with the same brick on the dividing wall. It creates a welcoming atmosphere based on similar San Francisco venues. For breakfast and lunch service, and brunch on weekends, go right to the

bakery counter and order up delights such as the cherry walnut toast with cinnamon sugar crust and caramelized apples, a ham and Gruyère croissant, or Tunisian shakshuka, with eggs in a spiced pepper stew. Especially amazing is the crème brulée croissant, with caramelized vanilla custard. Feel free to snag a whole loaf or one of the gourmet muffins or pastries while you’re there. Head in for dinner, and experiment with the Built for Bread section of the small-but-just-right menu. From butter made with Straus cream to the soft,

lush sheep’s milk ricotta or organic chicken foie gras mousse with port wine syrup, the spreadables here elevate the breadbasket. Smaller portions include duck rillettes or steak tartare, and farmer’s cheese pierogi, sautéed Pacific snapper and truffled chicken pot pie are other inventive dishes to try. The cocktails and wine selections here are almost as important as the food, so belly up to the bar or let your server guide you.

Fantasy Lands

Explore this pop star’s imagination in her hit residency ‘Play’

For Katy Perry, pop music’s reigning Queen of Camp, “Waking Up in Vegas” has become much more than a hit song and set list staple. Perry is and will always be a California gurl, but her Las Vegas residency places her on a stage that’s likely not far from where her aunt once kicked up her heels as a showgirl at the Stardust Resort and Casino. That property was imploded in 2007, making way for new beginnings and the explosive success of Perry’s residency, Play

Perry balances the fun onstage with the seriousness of being in top condition physically and mentally to make Play look as effortlessly fun to present as it is demanding to perform. Perry became a mom during the pandemic, making her well-being a priority to balance work and family life. She even launched a nonalcoholic drink, De Soi, with a friend who also experienced a recent pregnancy and is making it available at Play for the sober-curious.

Her performance is intoxicating all on its own. Fans who attended Play last year witnessed Perry descend from the ceiling and placed in a bed by a giant hand to sing “E.T.”

Styling by RuPaul collaborator Zaldy included colorfully gaudy ’60s-inspired outfits, a crystal dress embellished by strategically placed beer cans, a mushroom cap and a baby doll dress.

While costume changes were frequent, the arrangement of “Waking Up in Vegas” received a makeover as well. The song is jazzed up as if it were played by lounge musicians in the golden age of the Strip. The feel is as real as the live band that includes bassist Kyle Whalum. His father is Grammywinning saxophonist Kirk Whalum, most familiar to pop music audiences for his solo on Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You.”

The career-spanning sets during the concert included “California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream,” “Roar” and “Firework,” all realized live in a way only an entertainer with showgirl roots, dedication and discipline, and a neo-kitschy personal style, can. –

A Daylong Delight

Find a little of everything in this extensive retail complex

Wander into The Forum Shops at Caesars and you’ll find yourself in a wonderland of shopping, where a circular escalator transports people from floor to floor. And you can find just about everything here, from art, glassware and apparel to hot dining spots.

Some of the newest additions include Speziata, a swimwear boutique (and it’s certainly the right time of year for that), Café Lola (a Vegas fave with the cutest décor, breakfast, brunch and afternoon tea) and SOL Mexican Cocina, featuring coastal Baja cuisine and a beachy décor, with a bar serving up rocking margaritas. And Lids has just opened a Paris Saint-Germain soccer team store here, with jerseys, headwear, one-of-a-kind collaborations and customization stations.

Baccarat recently reopened its store here, a flagship venue, showcasing its unmistakable crystal. Tourneau also reopened its Forum Shops at Caesars store, which is a flagship locale also—the brand is transitioning into Bucherer 1888, with the same gorgeous lineup of luxury timepieces. Find all kinds of art at Park West Fine Art Museum & Gallery, Peter Lik Gallery and many others.

Stop for drinks at True Food Kitchen or RPM Italian. If you want something special, RPM Italian offers a magnificent sommelier-led experience. Plus, they’re close to that escalator and have easy access to the Strip. –Nina

American Drummer

Hard rock musician brings back that dynamic sound

Steven Adler ’s got the band together again. Not the one he joined with Slash in 1985, but Adler’s Appetite, the one he plays in with longtime guitarist Michael Thomas, vocalist Ari Kamin, guitarist Alistair James and bassist Todd Kerns. It’s a good sign that Adler’s healthy and happy rather than preoccupied with whetting his appetite for destruction.

Adler being healthy makes fans of the founding lineup of Guns N’

Roses happy (Adler left the band in 1990). Few rock stars have had so many well-wishers in their corner as they battled their demons, which resulted in stints on Celebrity Rehab and, finally, an end to hard partying.

He hasn’t stopped rocking hard though. Adler’s playing on 1987’s Appetite for Destruction has a swing to it that set Guns N’ Roses apart from Sunset Strip peers. His extroverted happy-go-lucky personality, which

really can’t be duplicated, comes through in his playing.

Expect a set chock-full of hits from Appetite for Destruction, hard rock radio staples and maybe a cover or two of classics by Mott the Hoople or Thin Lizzy, two of Adler’s favorite bands.

King Tut’s Tomb

AT LUXOR

More than 100 years ago, legendary archeologist Howard Carter and his team discovered the lost tomb of Tutankhamun, also known as King Tut’s Tomb. Lost for centuries, the pharaoh’s tomb was originally sealed after his death around 1323 B.C. and wasn’t found until 1922. The gold lined tomb, filled with different treasures and King Tut’s sarcophagus is one of the most famous archeological finds of the 20th century. And now, you don’t need to travel to Egypt to experience its wonder. Discovering King Tut’s Tomb at Luxor Hotel and Casino is an immersive experience that takes you through the wonders and mysteries of ancient Egypt.

ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE

This self-guided journey walks you through the footsteps of Howard Carter as he found the tomb site, unlocked the inner rooms, discovered

The all-inclusive package is the best experience and a great value at $65 for adults and $53 for children. It includes general admission tickets to the exhibit, an audio tour guided by Howard Carter, the virtual reality experience, and a 6x8 souvenir photo. To learn more, visit KingTutVegas.com.

the many treasures within, and came face-to-face with King Tut’s mummy. Beginning in the caves of the Valley of the Kings, the burial site of many other Egyptian royals, you’ll experience the sounds and images of excavation within hieroglyphic covered walls. You’ll then dive deeper into the artifacts of the tomb, including gold, statues of Egyptian gods, and everyday objects used by ancient Egyptians.

Beyond the immersive world and jaw-dropping replica artifacts, the exhibit is filled with educational diagrams and videos including an in-depth look at the mummification process. There’s also extended information about the life and times of

King Tut himself, a boy king who only lived into his late teens and left an indelible mark on Egyptian history.

One of the most extraordinary recreations is King Tut’s sarcophagus and coffin, which consists of three nested, jewel-encrusted golden coffins and the mummified form within.

OTHER EXPERIENCES

Beyond the main walk-thru experience, you can do an add-on virtual reality tour of the moment Howard Carter first entered the sought after tomb.

There’s also an extensively themed gift shop with options for all ages, including high-end jewelry reminiscent of ancient Egypt.

Kick Up Those Cowboy Boots

Country-western-themed hot spot offers bull riding, line dancing and live music

Matt West, director of restaurants at Treasure Island, said it best about Gilley’s: “Gilley’s is just an awesome country bar experience. I don’t think you realize you’re in Vegas, even though we’re right on the Las Vegas Strip. It’s an absolute fun, country vibe. I love the line dancing and the live music.”

Stepping through the doors, guests are immersed into a honkytonk world with Nashville-inspired décor, delicious barbecue and Southern eats, live music, flowing cocktails and the Gilley’s Girls.

Families can dine in the restaurant portion—with seating right

along Las Vegas Boulevard South— and dig into Gilley’s eats like brisket, ribs and pulled pork, all smoked in-house over mesquite wood. (West suggests ordering the famous mac and cheese and tater tots, too!) But come 9 p.m., Gilley’s becomes a hot spot for 21-and-over nightlife fun.

Inside the saloon portion of Gilley’s, settle into one of the fun saddle seats or take a turn around the dance floor as live bands take the stage. If you’re not an experienced dancer, don’t fret—Gilley’s provides free line dancing lessons for novice and expert line dancers alike. “Our dance instructor—she works her

magic and she’ll have everyone that was sitting in the saloon out on the dance floor and working through a couple of songs in no time,” West said. And there’s nothing better than cutting up the wood dance floor to live country bands.

This week, catch Scotty Alexander on Aug. 2-3 beginning at 8:30 p.m. and, on Aug. 4, the Swan Brothers at 10 p.m. and Jimi Nelson at 11:30 p.m. On Monday nights, Vegas’ popular country music radio station, 107.9 Coyote Country, broadcasts live from the saloon with music starting at 8 p.m. For a more stripped-down, laid-back live music

setting, visit Gilley’s for its Home Grown Sundays with Steve Sturgis & The Riflemen; and beginning at 5 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, enjoy food and live bluegrass bands during Gilley’s popular Bluegrass & BBQ experience.

It’s hard not to miss the famous Gilley’s Girls, who often join patrons on the dance floor during the line dancing lessons, or when they take their own turn on the dance floor

Tips/Insider Knowledge

On Friday and Saturday evenings, there is a $10 cover charge after 9 p.m.

Sunday through Thursday, ask the bartender about cocktail and beer specials

Take your turn on the mechanical bull any day, beginning at 4 p.m., for $10 per ride (must be 18+)

Free line dancing lessons take place from 7-8 p.m. Monday through Thursday

Like to get on the mic yourself?

Join Gilley’s every Tuesday from 8-10:30 p.m. for Karaoke Night, where you can get onstage and show off your singing skills

Gilley’s offers brunch every Saturday and Sunday, beginning at 10 a.m. with bottomless mimosas for only $24

for a little choreographed number. You’ll also see some of the Gilley’s Girls, dressed in bikinis, black chaps and cowboy hats, take a turn riding the famous Gilley’s bull, and when they’re not up there yeehawing, they’re serving the saloon’s tasty specialty cocktails.

West suggests three libations to try that will certainly whet your whistle, beginning with one of the Lonestar Lemonades like the Blueberry Lemonade. The summer sip is a refreshing mix of Stoli Blueberi vodka, New Amsterdam Pink Whitney vodka, fresh blueberries and a splash of lemonade.

Under the All Time Favorite Country Cocktails portion of the menu, try the Country Girl Mojito with Bacardi Pineapple rum, fresh mint, pineapple juice, agave nectar, fresh lime juice and Sierra Mist soft drink.

And, inspired by country music singer Tracy Byrd’s song of the same name, the Watermelon Crawl mixes Malibu Watermelon rum, Bundaberg ginger beer and watermelon Red Bull Red Edition energy drink. “People love that song and love to line dance to it, too,” West said. “And

the cocktail is so tasty and people love it.”

Tasty cocktails, live music, the Gilley’s Girls, the mechanical bull and a packed dance floor—it’s the perfect country escape, right on the Las Vegas Strip. “Fridays and Saturdays are our hot nights,” West said. “We’re open later, and people are just ready to let loose and have fun, and Gilley’s is the place to be for that.” –Kiko

Pierzga

Sand Dollar bartender has found his happy place Bryan

Bryan Pierzga, bar supervisor at Sand Dollar Downtown at Plaza, and his team are concocting some of the most-innovative, creative cocktails in the city.

The Sand Dollar team creates all the cocktails together; it’s a family event when they get together. “Our cocktails are seasonal and creative as anything you’re going to find at any award-winning bar or lounge,” Pierzga says.

For more than a dozen years, the Pennsylvania native has been tooling around with flavors and cocktails since he started out in his home state, work-

ing for various bars in and around his hometown. “I thought about becoming a chef and going to culinary school, because I liked working with flavors. And when I found out that there were bartenders doing the same thing, that’s when I decided I needed to move to Vegas, being a hospitality town,” he says. “Vegas was only supposed to be temporary—make some money, get some experience; that was 2014.”

And Pierzga is still here, working in a bar he loves. After plying his trade at many well-respected bars on and off

Every day, the Sand Dollar crew is at the bar hours before opening, prepping and batching ingredients for cocktails. “We use unexpected stuff, crazy ingredients,” Pierzga says. A tasty example of this is the Ai Papai, a blend of cucumber-infused Avuá Cachaça, fresh mango syrup, lime juice and a sweet corn reduction. –KM

the Strip, he joined Sand Dollar (at its original location on Spring Mountain Road) in 2018. When the locals favorite bar opened its second location this year at Plaza, Pierzga was tapped to help run it. “Out of all the experiences I’ve had since starting in the industry, (Anthony) Jamison (co-owner) and Sand Dollar is one of the favorite places I have ever worked,” he says. “The Sand Dollar crew has always been able to deliver on what a bar and what hospitality should be. … I’ve always strived and wanted to be in a place like this.” –Kiko

One of the most dynamic places on the Las Vegas Strip has to be Eataly. On the elevated level are numerous counters serving up a variety of quick-serve food like pizza, pasta and Italian street food. It also features two eat-in restaurants, including Toscana Ristorante & Bar by Eataly.

Tucked near Park MGM, the entrance to Toscana is accented by vines climbing the exterior walls, creating a charming vista. Inside, it’s incredibly intimate, seating just 75 guests, with Italian memorabilia on the walls. There’s also a lovely private dining room that seats 12, with walls lined in bottles of wine, that allow you to peek out at the people walking past (but they’ll never know you’re in there).

Once seated for dinner, you may choose to get a cocktail to start—in addition to a variety of cocktails with ingredients from Italian brands, you can indulge in a customizable Negroni Toscana or a trendy espresso martini. And if you are a spritz fan, Toscana features four different ones as well as a nonalcoholic one. Plus, there are plenty of by-the-glass wine options, as well as sommelier-recommended pairings for the menu.

As you order, think about sharing each dish for maximum enjoyment. Antipasti includes the grande piatto

misto, a selection of several cheeses and meats plus a house-made focaccia that you’ll go back to again and again. Other options include crudo di tonno, yellowfin tuna tartare accented with espelette peppers, orange zest and fried capers, and prosciutto e mozzarella, with house-made fried gnocchi—puffy little pillows served with aged prosciutto.

From the pasta menu, choose gnocchi alla sorrentina, baked gnocchi with both house-made mozzarella and imported Italian Parmigiano Reggiano; or the linguine all’astice, imported Italian pasta with lobster, basil and parsley.

Bigger dishes include branzino all’acqua pazza (crazy water), where the fish is served in light white wine sauce with cherry tomatoes; the filetto al tartufo,

a petite, 8-ounce Creekstone Farms cut with roasted and fried artichokes, and a black truffle sauce; the 16-ounce N.Y. strip, the tomahawk appesa, a 40-ounce slow-roasted cut. Now, you can see why sharing is a good thing. Toscana also offers three-course menus for two with a bottle of wine—maybe you’d like Fiorentina, a 42-ounce Creekstone Farms porterhouse.

For dessert, tiramisu is served in a chocolate shell; it’s really neat, as is buttermilk and sage panna cotta in a white chocolate shell. This one, don’t share.

The release of Kelly Clarkson’s first album in six years precedes her long-awaited Vegas residency

There are 10 occasions to catch Kelly Clarkson performing songs from her latest album in concert, and they are all in Las Vegas during her summer residency. Chemistry … An Intimate Night with Kelly Clarkson cribs its title from Clarkson’s fourth full-length effort, which reached No. 1 on Billboard’s

Album Sales chart a month after debuting at No. 6 on the Billboard Top 200. That said, fans can be sure Clarkson’s set will be a deep dive into new material that explores both emotions and empowerment after divorce.

Clarkson may be the busiest superstar singer working today. An extensive tour was out of the question as it was not possible to suspend production of her daytime gig, The Kelly Clarkson Show, which recently moved from an L.A. soundstage to Rockefeller Center in New York City. She did undertake a blitz of podcast appearances to

promote Chemistry, where she discussed the songs.

Things may have turned out differently if her original residency dates had not been postponed due to the pandemic. Clarkson began working on her latest material prior to lockdown and, by the summer of 2020, she was recording new songs with longtime songwriting and producing producers Jason Halbert and Jesse Shatkin. Collaborators including singer-songwriter Carly Rae Jepsen, comedian-cum-banjoist Steve Martin and percussionist Sheila E. all made guest appearances on different tracks.

32 | 7.30.23 Las Vegas Magazine

Clarkson said she wrote 60 songs for Chemistry. Those that made the album are often brutally frank or celebrate liberation. Album opener “Skip This Part” sets the tone with American Idol’s first and best champion expressing her desire to bypass the most painful phase of breaking up: “If I could escape all this hurt and this pain, oh, I would/ What it’s gonna take to get me through this break is no good.”

8 p.m. Aug. 2, 4-5, 9, 11-12 and 18-19, starting at $159 plus tax and fee. ticketmaster.com

How much of the album’s lyrics are direct messaging to her ex and how much are creative expansion on themes of love and loss is likely only apparent to the two people involved in the relationship, but Chemistry has quite a few precedents. Marvin Gaye’s Here, My Dear and Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours are two well-known examples, and Taylor Swift is notorious for compositional vengeance.

Clarkson is no stranger to the subject, having had a No. 2 with “Since U Been Gone” in 2004. It had been six years since her last album when Chemistry was released, and there was a lot for her to unpack. “I hope one day someone will take your heart and hold it tight,” she sings on “Mine.”

“Make you feel like you’re invincible deep inside/ And right when you think that it’s perfect, they cross a line/ And steal your shine like you did mine.”

No meanings cloaked in metaphor for Clarkson, but she does express anticipation at the prospect of being free and finding new love in the Jepsen collaboration “Favorite Kind of High.” If there’s one thing likely about … An Intimate Night, it’s that the sets will be emotional roller coasters unlike any Clarkson’s fans have experienced before— and they won’t want to get off the ride.

the International Theater

at Westgate Las Vegas hosted some of entertainment’s biggest stars

the International Theater at Westgate Las Vegas was built with a strong foundation and reinforced by history-making entertainment that spanned generations. It set the stage for what the Las Vegas entertainment landscape is today. Its tale is packed with some of the biggest names in music, theater, comedy and more, and while the resort has changed owners and names in its 50-plus years, today Westgate Las Vegas has restored the venue to its former glory.

Photography courtesy of Westgate Las Vegas archives

In 1967, entrepreneur and businessman Kirk Kerkorian, then known as the landlord of Caesars Palace, purchased more than 60 acres o -Strip along Paradise Road and built the world’s largest resort at the time—the International Hotel. After purchasing the land for $5 million, he spent more than $50 million erecting one of the city’s first mega-resorts, which stood 30 stories high and housed more than 1,500 rooms. (Today, with the expansion of the hotel over the years, the Westgate Las Vegas now houses nearly 3,000 rooms, along with convention space and the world’s largest sportsbook).

On July 2, 1969, the International Hotel opened its doors to celebrities and tourists and locals alike, with singer Barbra Streisand performing inside

the International Theater, then called Showroom Internationale. The showroom on opening night was packed with stars like Cary Grant, Rita Hayworth, Rudolf Nureyev, Andy Williams and owner Kerkorian. Streisand, just coming o her Academy Award win for Best Actress in Funny Girl earlier that year, was signed to a four-week engagement and played a stripped-down show that at first received lukewarm reviews (some press said her show was more suitable for a cabaret-style setting, not a large, luxurious theater like the Internationale), but toward the end garnered praise, wowing audiences with hits like “People” and “Don’t Rain On My Parade.”

Although her star power brought in the crowds and laid the foundation for future programming, the next star to take up residence inside the International Theater would make the biggest impact, not only for the property but for the history of Las Vegas entertainment.

Literally the day after Streisand ended her run inside the International Theater, posters, banners and merchandise were plastered across the hotel’s property with the face of Elvis Presley—even the cocktail servers sported buttons on their lapels promot-

ing his new residency. On July 31, 1969, Elvis stepped onto the International Theater stage to perform live, for the first time in years, in front of the celebrity-packed house.

“Vernon (Presley), my mother, Priscilla, Lisa and my two brothers and me were in

Las Vegas Magazine 7.30.23 | 37

a booth,” David Stanley, Elvis’ stepbrother, told Las Vegas Magazine this year. “Elvis walked out on that stage and, ‘Oh my!’ He hadn’t done a concert in nine years, and he came out that night inside this historical theater

and man, that was it. I thought, ‘My god, this guy!’ I went up to him and I said, ‘Elvis, that was unbelievable.’ And he said, ‘David, I’ve been wrong for so long, but I was right tonight.’”

And boy oh boy, was Elvis so right. His star power, his heartthrob status and the glowing reviews of his show kept him performing seven years for a total of 636 record-breaking, sold-out performances. And there every night was Stanley, who eventually dropped out of high school to join Elvis’ security team and entourage, known as the Memphis Mafia, during his theater tenure—two shows per night, for 30 days straight, for two months out of the year, until Elvis’ death in 1977.

“The first night he was here, it was like a prize fight,” Stanley said. “Everyone was all excited. He hadn’t done any concerts in nine years. He’d done movies. So everyone was anticipating. That was the era of The Stones and The Beatles—Elvis was a ’50s cat. All of a sudden there was this new breed of music, so was Elvis still the King? Anybody who was anybody was here. And the thing about an Elvis concert—when Elvis comes out onstage, the electricity just took the paint o the wall. The magnetism and the charisma—it was like, ‘God almighty!’

“He did that from 1969 to the day he died. Every time he would walk out on that stage, the crowds would go insane. From the day he started to the time he died, there was not an empty seat in this theater. He would come out onstage and girls and women would rush the stage— every show. It was insanity.”

During his run, Elvis lived on the 30th floor and Stanley recalled those nights after each concert. “Downstairs was the dressing room, and he’d go and change, and then come out and hobnob with the celebrities. Depending on how he felt, he’d invite them up to the suite and take the back elevator up there, 30th floor, and they’d go till 4 or 5 in the morning. Elvis wasn’t a big partier, though. Elvis’ idea of a good time was to go to the suite and sing gospel music. He didn’t drink. He didn’t smoke pot. … He left so much of his

38 | 7.30.23 Las Vegas Magazine

soul on that stage. He gave so much of himself. Elvis left a mark.”

Another man that has left his mark inside the historic venue, and come September is on track to break Elvis’ record for number of shows inside the International Theater, is Barry Manilow. The singer-songwriter first signed a contract with the theater in 2005 and, with some breaks away from the theater through the years, to this day continues to perform inside the International Theater, with his show The Hits Come Home

“When Barry Manilow came in in 2005, we completely remodeled the stage for his show,” said International Theater head stage carpenter Craig Hayes, who has worked at the theater for 29 years. “I love Barry Manilow. He is a perfectionist. He’s very picky. He videos every show and watches it every night to see if there’s anything he wants to make better or change for the next show. That’s the consummate performer—wanting to do the perfect show.”

On top of Elvis’ and Manilow’s history-making residencies, The International Theater has been home to many other stars in its 53-year history. When it comes to concerts, it’s a who’s who of world-renowned performers, including Hall & Oates, Donna Summer, Kenny Rogers, Keith Urban, Smokey Robinson, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Liza Minnelli, Burt Bacharach, Earth, Wind & Fire, Johnny Cash, Heart, B.B. King, The Righteous Brothers, Charo, Tony Bennett, Aretha Franklin, Paul Anka, James Brown, Brooks & Dunn, Wayne Newton, and

Another Vegas legend, Liberace, held court inside the International Theater beginning in 1972 until the early 1980s. At the time, Liberace’s salary was one of the highest, close to $200,000 per week. His show was a spectacle, with flashy, flamboyant outfits and his arrival onstage by way of a Rolls-Royce.

The 2013 HBO movie Behind the Candelabra re-creates Liberace’s famous performances, and the movie was in fact filmed inside the actual International Theater, which was staged to appear as

it did back when the superstar performed there.

“I got to watch Liberace a few times when my dad worked there,” said Hayes, whose father worked at the International Theater when it opened. “Liberace knew how to entertain. He’d walk out there and he’d play for a while, and then he’d walk o and get changed into something more fabulous. He’d say, ‘I’m going to change into something more fabulous!’—and it’d be more fabulous. He was amazing; watching him play, he’d have the audience mesmerized. He’d say stu like, ‘People always ask me how I play with all these rings on my fingers and I say, ‘I play very well, thank you.’”

When it comes to comedy, the giants of the industry also graced the theater’s stage, including Redd Foxx, Eddie Murphy, Bill Cosby, Rodney Dangerfield, Bill Engvall, Paul Rodriguez, Doug Henning, Andrew Dice Clay, Bill Maher, Eddie Griffin, Ron White, Jamie Foxx, George Lopez and Steve Harvey.

In 1993, the International Theater underwent its biggest renovation to date, more than $10 million, to accommodate its first big theatrical production, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Starlight Express. The abridged version ran for 90 minutes, received a Vegas-glitzed revamp and featured a cast that famously performed the entire show on roller skates.

Starlight Express was another score for the International Theater in that it was one of the first big musical productions to have a permanent home on a Las Vegas stage and run every week over five years, thereby setting the standard of craftsmanship and big-budget spectacle for the production shows you see on the Strip today.

The theater also appeared in homes all across the country by way of television, staging everything from the Mrs. America Beauty and Mrs. World Beauty pageants to the ESPY, BET and Victor awards shows and games shows like Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy! and The $250,000 Game Show Spectacular

40 | 7.30.23 Las Vegas Magazine

“I get paid to work with some of the best acts, and when each show is over, I get to look out at the audience and see people smiling because they just had a great time,” Hayes said. “I have the best job around. The early days of Vegas, people used to show up to the theater in suits, ties and evening gowns. Now it’s T-shirts and flip-flops, but they’re all coming to see a show, to be entertained.

“When the International opened, it was the biggest showroom in Las Vegas,” Hayes added. “Most other showrooms could fit between 800-1,000 seats; when the International opened, it could put 2,000 people in there; that’s almost double. And when Elvis played in there, they’d fit 2,000 people in there twice a

night for a straight two months out of the year, for years.”

When Stanley thinks back about his time inside the International Theater, those thoughts are about Elvis, his brother. “I grew up in this building,” he said, looking around the theater. “I feel Elvis right now, being in this theater.”

Fans of Elvis can join Stanley, who serves as an ambassador for Westgate Las Vegas, once a month inside the International Theater for the My Brother Elvis experience (the next one is Aug. 9). The intimate experience includes a backstage tour of the theater and Elvis’ personal dressing room and a sit-down Q&A with Stanley, who will also recount his and Elvis’ time in Las Vegas during the King’s historic run.

Gordon Prouty, vice president of pubic and community relations for Westgate Las Vegas, recounted the International

Theater’s impact on the city’s entertainment landscape. “When the theater opened it was this incredible experience,” he said. “It was old Vegas glamour. The only people bigger than the ones on the stage were the people that showed up to watch the concerts. Everyone would come to see a show in this theater. The entertainment and names in the theater itself really set the bar for Las Vegas entertainment you see today.

“We’re really building on the legacy of the International Theater and expanding on the overall legacy of the shows that were established over the decades,” Prouty added. “The theater in so many ways parallels the history of Las Vegas.”

Today, the International Theater continues its success of leading the pack for memorable moments in entertainment and no doubt has many more chapters in its tale left to be written.

LUXURY, has plenty of space for the largest of families—four bedrooms, nine bathrooms and a four-car garage. It’s a truly custom-built house, full of character through and through, from the chandelier and ornate archways to the large wooden beams on the ceilings and ascending stone staircase with wrought-iron railings. At its top, columns lead up to a muraled ceiling. It contrasts beautifully with the surrounding hardwood and stone flooring.

That attention to detail can be found in every room. The kitchen is a real highlight, accented by dark wood and featuring a large, natural stone island with a small copper sink, baroque-style mural, farmhouse kitchen sink and more. The primary bedroom, the only one located in the main house for maximum privacy, has an enormous closet and private covered patio looking out onto the lake. Each of the other bedrooms is unique in style!

As you make your way to the backyard, you’ll immediately be impressed by the mature landscaping, which envelops the grounds, including a lush courtyard. This is an outdoor area you’ll be spending plenty of time at, thanks to an infinity pool, in-ground hot tub and outdoor kitchen.
