A Family A air

What makes Las Vegas one of the best cities in the world is its diversity of o erings. Not only will you fi nd some of the best adult-themed entertaiment around, you’ll also discover plenty of places to take the entire family. It’s with that in mind that we put together this issue of Las Vegas Magazine. Scan the following pages, grab the kids and get ready to have some all-ages fun!

Start your adventure with one of the best exhibits on the Las Vegas Strip—and perhaps the country: Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition, which features The Big Piece, a section of the famous ship. That section recently underwent maintenance to ensure it lasts as long as possible to remind generations of the magnitude of the vessel itself (“Saving the Past,” p. 15 ).

If you’re a fan of animals, wait until you and the kids get a look at Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay, which recently added a new section that focuses on cold-water sharks (“A New Wave,” p. 17 ). And make sure to get the camera ready for plenty of photos!

Who’s your favorite celebrity? Odds are you’re going to come face to face with them (in a manner of speaking) at Madame Tussauds Las Vegas at The Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian. And the attraction recently added its newest tenant: rapper Jack Harlow (“Do a Double Take,” p. 20).

Are your kids into sports? There’s only one place to take them to eat: Flanker Kitchen + Sports Bar at The Shoppes at Mandalay Place. In addition to great food options, the venue features some of the best sports viewing in town—including a wall-length screen (“No Cheap Seats Here,” p. 28).

We’re so glad you chose this week to visit Las Vegas. And we hope you create some special memories with the whole family!

The Down Under Side of the Moon

Tribute band keeps the spirit of the famous group alive

By 1981, the Roger Waters-led lineup of Pink Floyd began to disintegrate. There would be no more live Floyd for six years until guitarist David Gilmour and drummer Nick Mason toured to promote 1987 album A Momentary Lapse of Reason and invited original keyboardist Richard Wright along. They brought props from previous tours such as a huge inflatable pig and a circular projection screen that made stadium shows enjoyable from the farthest seats, elements that became crucial to the stage production developed by The Australian Pink Floyd Show

Devoted Pink Floyd fans had long been known for ticking away the moments that make up a dull day as they waited between albums, tours and reunions. TAPFS began filling in those gaps in 1988 when the band formed in Adelaide, South Australia, as Think Floyd. Since then, after a name change, the seminal tribute band boasts 5 million tickets sold in 35 countries. They’ve earned the seal of approval of Gilmour himself.

The current North American tour kicks off with the performing of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon in its entirety, in observation of the classic concept album’s 50th anniversary. Back in the day, teenagers attended “cosmic

concerts” at science centers at planetariums where the most in-demand soundtrack was the 1973 exploration of time, money and lunatics.

Now those kids are grown up and can get the full experience, albeit without Gilmour and company. For most concertgoers, Mason, Waters and Wright were small figures on the stage in concert, eventually being obscured by the titular design element of The Wall Tour Not having to inhabit personas allows TAPFS to focus on playing the music to pristine perfection.

That was the plan from the get-go when founding members Steve Mac (guitars) and Jason Sawford (keyboards) answered an ad that read “Vocalist and keyboardist required for band. Professional attitude expected. We only play Pink Floyd.” The late ’80s was the dawn of tribute bands after the industry was established by Elvis and Beatles impersonators. Classic rock tribute bands became legion. The Australian Pink Floyd Show outlasted them all and has itself become an institution, complete with inflatable kangaroo. Don’t miss the starting gun.

Saving the Past

One of the highlights of Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition indeed, one of the highlights of the entire Las Vegas Strip—is The Big Piece, a “small” section recovered from the wreckage of the fated vessel, so massive that it nearly stretches end to end in one of the exhibit’s larger rooms. It still has most of its rivets, not to mention segments of the glass coverings over the portholes. It truly brings the weight of the experience those hundreds of unfortunate souls endured into stark focus, and thanks to a team led by conservationist Joseph Sembrat, it’s guaranteed to be around to affect generations for a long, long time.

Once the piece was recovered in the ’90s, it spent much time on the road as part of a touring exhibition. That led to exposure to elements that required multiple conservation efforts over the years in Boston, Virginia and Houston. But in the late 2000s it found a permanent home at Luxor, and Sembrat said the desert is almost the “perfect” environment for its long-term preservation.

“It was nice to see that it’s in such good condition,” said Sembrat as his team methodically dusted the piece in late July, applying tannic acid and waxing it with carnauba. “It was the best thing for it to stay here and not travel around. We didn’t see any signs of salts coming out or any real new corrosion or anything like that.”

As The Big Piece endures, so does the popularity of the Titanic legend and the Luxor exhibition, which immerses visitors in the history, detail and lives of everyone on the maiden voyage that ended with an iceberg collision. You’ll see the size of the beds (and cabins) passengers slept in, recovered items like silverware, shaving kits and money, and an elaborate re-creation of the famous staircase (the only part of the exhibit you are allowed to touch), where you can channel your inner Leo and Kate.

As powerful as The Big Piece is, it’s the summation of all the details—big and small—that give Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition its real power. –Ken Miller

A New Wave

Family-friendly Strip attraction adds more sea-dwelling creatures to the mix

Over its decades-long history at Mandalay Bay, Shark Reef Aquarium has been host to some of the most fascinating and unique animals across the globe (both above and beneath the water), and its most recent addition— the first since 2008—is a dream come true for lovers of sharks, as well as a highly educational segment that helps to dispel some popular myths.

The re-creation of a kelp forest includes a variety of cold-water sharks (horn, leopard, swell and pyjama), and the aquarium also re-creates the dap-

pled light that helps to camouflage the sharks in their natural environment. It’s here you’ll learn tidbits like:

• Sharks do not need to constantly move to survive. In fact, species like the pyjama are nocturnal, meaning they will likely be sleeping at the bottom of the enclosure during most of the day;

• Despite what you see in movies like Jaws, sharks actually eat very little: In fact, most sharks eat about 1 to 2 percent of their body weight in a sevento 10-day period (humans, conversely, eat that much in a day).

Other highlights at this perennial favorite include a Komodo dragon, Johnston’s crocodiles, piranhas, skinks, jellyfish, a Burmese python and a wide variety of fish (everything from French angelfish to queen triggerfish and parrotfish), some of which share aquarium space with the sand and zebra sharks. There’s also a touch tank (the only part of the exhibit where you can actually reach out and discover what some of these creatures feel like). –Ken Miller

Taking Dining to the Next Level

Caesars Palace Chinese restaurant amazes with dedication to tradition and innovation

Since 1968, restaurateur Michael Chow has shared his food and philosophy through his namesake restaurants, Mr Chow, with locations in New York, Miami, London and Beverly Hills, and his Las Vegas location at Caesars Palace.

The concentration on authentic Beijing cuisine, combined with impeccable service and interior design that exudes museum-like quality, has made the Mr Chow brand a wildly popular dining experience for A-list celebrities and common folk alike.

“So the environment (of the restaurant) is one entertainment out of the next,” Chow told Las Vegas Magazine when the local outpost opened in 2016. “Entertainment in terms of the restaurant’s traditions, there’s six things. One is the dessert trolley; one of the most beautiful things you’ve ever seen. The other is the champagne trolley; we have Dom Perignon by the glass. The other is the noodle show. The other is the carving of the Beijing duck. The other is the deboning of the Dover sole, and then the wine decanter.”

Other specialty dishes of the house include the green prawns, chicken satay, turnip puff with ham, squid ink rice noodles, dressed Dungeness crab served off the shell and folded into a cloud of egg whites, and the ma mignon, an original recipe from 1975 that slices tender filet mignon and is served with a special sauce. The imitation shark’s fin soup, sweet and sour pork, lobster shumai and the crispy gambler’s duck, served with steamed pancakes and plum sauce, are all equally special as well.

“This restaurant, like all the Mr Chows, has a special side to it, too,” Chow said. “This environment is white on white, a Mr Chow tradition. Very romantic. This is fantasy, this is poetry, this is theater, excitement. I was given a 60-foot dome, with 35-foot ceiling, so I created this kinetic sculpture.” It’s named The Moon, a 26-foot moveable disc that changes colors and light; throughout the evening it will entertain. “It will perform, like the Bellagio Fountains,” he said. –Kiko Miyasato

Do a Double Take

Wax museum’s latest figure is one of music’s hottest young stars

If you’re a fan of rapper Jack Harlow (and who isn’t?), wait until you visit Madame Tussauds Las Vegas and meet the man himself. Well, you might not meet him in person, but you’ll certainly be able to get a pic with him! Earlier this summer, Harlow found himself face-to-face with Madame Tussauds Las Vegas’ newest wax figure, which is decked out in the custom-designed suit that he sported in his music video for “Churchill Downs (feat. Drake),” filmed at the 2022 Kentucky Derby. In his hands is a crystal necklace in the shape of Kentucky, his home state.

To create the figure, 20 studio artists all pitched in on different parts of the figure, which took about six months from start to finish. Harlow unveiled his doppelgänger in a ceremony in July before he headed to Zouk Nightclub at Resorts World Las Vegas for a performance.

At Madame Tussauds Las Vegas, Harlow isn’t the only celebrity you can grab a pic with—think Megan Thee Stallion, Snoop Dogg, Steve Aoki, Bad Bunny and more. You’ll also find sports stars, movie stars, musicians, and iconic Vegas figures.

It’s not all photo ops, though. You’ll find a 4D Marvel movie, a bar that seems like it’s straight out of The Hangover (plus other Hangover scenes) and the Carnival Carnage 7D game (battle against your friends). And if you want a memento, get yourself cast in wax. (Well, at least, get your hands cast.) –Nina

Poetry in Motion

Body-rocking maestros create a wonderland of dance

When Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland author Lewis Carroll wrote nonsense poem Jabberwocky, he could not have predicted its title would inspire the name of a hip-hop dance crew that would become world famous. Jabbawockeez in action are the equivalent of Carroll’s freestyle approach to language. You don’t have to know what Carroll meant exactly in the poem’s opening lines, “’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves/ Did gyre and gimble in the wabe,” to be able to flow with his skill and vision.

The slithy toves of Jabbawockeez flow with skill and vision when they gyre and gimble in the wabe of their fourth headlining Vegas show on the south end of the Strip. The signature white masks and gloves worn by the dancers emphasize the all-for-one and one-for-all attitude shared by Jabbawockeez, whose corporate officers come from within the ranks. They take care of their own business.

That business is creating a wonderland of dance and continuing to evolve the vision of the founding

trio. Two of them, Kevin “KB” Brewer and Joe “Punkee” Larot, are still with the group that now includes some 20 core and auxiliary members.

Headquarters is Las Vegas via long-running residencies, but the America’s Best Dance Crew winners make high-visibility appearances such as at the 2022 NBA Finals. Wherever the stage, every step the Jabbawockeez take is poetry in motion. –Matt

Where’d All the Rum Go?

Go on a drinking adventure to celebrate the spirit on its national holiday

You can thank sugar for the creation of rum. More than four centuries ago, plantations used a process to extract sugar from sugar cane, and a byproduct of that procedure produced molasses. For many years, molasses was just a waste product of creating sugar, but someone eventually figured out that by distilling it one could create alcohol—woo-hoo! Thus, rum was born.

In celebration of the now immensely popular spirit, National Rum Day was declared on Aug. 16. So lift a glass at these rum hot spots this Wednesday and say “Cheers!” to the sweet spirit.

I mean, it’s even in the name— Rhumbar Tropical Ultra Lounge at The Mirage. The patio here is gorgeous and offers plenty of shaded seating to enjoy a laundry list of rum cocktails like the popular, rum-packed 100 Foot Wave, a mix of Coruba dark Jamaican rum, Ron Del Barrilito 3 Star rum, El Dorado 12-Year rum, tangerine and lemon juices and a passionfruit purée.

Over at Cabo Wabo Cantina at Miracle Mile Shops, the bar and restaurant made famous by rocker Sammy Hagar celebrates the holiday with a specially created cocktail, the Sunset Dreams. It’s made with

Hagar’s own brand of rum (Sammy’s Beach Bar rum), along with orange Curaçao, grenadine, Coco Lopez Cream of Coconut liqueur and orange and pineapple juices, and topped with a can of Sammy’s Beach Bar Cocktail Co. Tangerine Dream sparkling rum cocktail. The beachy venue, inspired by the town of Cabo San Lucas, stacks its menu with other signature rum cocktails that use Sammy’s Beach Bar rum. Try the super-popular Sammy’s Toasted Colada with his platinum rum, Coco Lopez and pineapple juice, served on the rocks and garnished with toasted coconut.

Stop by über-cool speakeasy The Barbershop Cuts & Cocktails at The Cosmopolitan, as they offer two rum cocktails: Another Day in Paradise with Bacardi Superior rum, orgeat, lime, pineapple vinegar and Angostura bitters, served in an upside pineapple with a flambéed pineapple ring; and the Dazed & Confused with Mount Gay Black Barrel rum, Aperol, ginger honey syrup, lime juice and pineapple juice with a Pop Rocks rim.

At Crush at MGM Grand, try the pineapple coconut mojito, made with Bacardi coconut rum, pineapple and fresh mint. Proper Eats Food Hall at Aria throws its recipe into the National Rum Day ring with the Tropic Thunder cocktail, a mix of Mount Gay rum, orgeat, Fever-Tree cola and fresh lime. And Black Tap Craft Burgers & Beer at The Venetian offers a delicious toasted coconut daiquiri with white rum, Clement Mahina Coco coconut rum liqueur, house-made toasted coconut syrup, pressed coconut water and lime juice.

More daiquiri deliciousness can be had at another cool speakeasy, The Underground in the basement of the Mob Museum in downtown

Las Vegas. Guests can travel back to the Prohibition era and sip on The Underground Daiquiri, made with your choice of 12-, 15-, 18- or 23year rum, and enjoy $1 off regular pricing. Find more specialty pricing at The Tangier lobby bar at Sahara Las Vegas—50% off all rum drinks for the holiday!

Promoting the city he loves through a successful career

Billy Piero, sales and marketing manager for Paradox Museum, is a Las Vegas guy through and through. Although not born here, he was raised here from a very young age and takes great pride in living and working in Las Vegas. “I’m such a Vegas guy,” he says.

So much so that when he graduated from college, he immediately moved back home and began promoting the fabulous entertainment that the Strip offers. In capacities like management and sales and marketing, Piero built his career with stints at Cirque du Soleil—

helping launch shows like The Beatles LOVE. He’s worked for Hard Rock Cafe, where it broke the Guinness World Record for largest drag performance in the world; was operations manager for Madame Tussauds Las Vegas at The Venetian; and spent four years leading sales for Spiegelworld. Three months ago, he joined Paradox Museum, where he promotes “the most interactive, mind-bending museum that you’ll ever experience,” Piero says.

Outside of work, Piero continues his love for the city by working as

Flanker Kitchen + Sports Bar has something for fans of any team

LAS VEGAS HAS NO SHORTAGE

of sports bars and sports-themed entertainment venues; after all, this is a city that hosts the National Football League, National Hockey League and WNBA, among others. But even if you’re not a fan of the Raiders, Golden Knights or Aces, odds are you have a vested interest in some team, and if you’re visiting Las Vegas, watching your favorite squad duke it out while you feast on nachos, chicken wings and premium draft beers is practically mandatory. The newest entry in this strong Strip category, Flanker Kitchen + Sports Bar, is a must-visit, not just for its menu but for its atmosphere and overall

sense of nonstop fun.

This man (and woman) cave, from the folks who also brought the Strip Carversteak at Resorts World Las Vegas, impresses from the minute you enter—

perched just at the beginning of The Shoppes at Mandalay Place, it’s full of TV screens, comfortable booths, large tables for groups and much more. The real “wow!” factor comes courtesy of a video

screen that stretches from one wall to another—30 feet by 9 feet. The baseball players we watched as we ate looked almost life-sized!

Sidle up to the TV screen of your choice and get ready for a jampacked selection of drinks and food. The cocktail menu is divided into “Cool & Refreshing,” “Fun & Flirty” and “Bold & Delicious,” and all your favorites are here, including a few original twists. We recommend the L.T.P. (Lemon Triple Play), made with Grey Goose Le Citron, limoncello, citrus and Lemon RimLicks.

The appetizer section truly has something for everyone. Vegetarians will definitely want to try the Tailgate Nachos, chips flavored with Tajin and smothered with Monterey Jack, pico de gallo, avocado and queso, while vegans will love the

giant soft pretzel (served on a tiny goal post!). And yes, shrimp cocktail is available here, served with classic-style sauce and Old Bay dijonnaise, and the chicken wings here are crispy and flavored three di erent ways: salt and lemon pepper, Bu alo and spicy Korean gochujang.

The main courses here run the gamut from New York steak and fries and petit filet mignon to Atlantic salmon and half roasted chicken. Any of them pair wonderfully with country-style onion rings, roasted broccolini, corn o the cob “elote style” and sweet potato wa e fries.

Dessert lovers will want to save some room for selections like sea salt s’mores (marshmallows, almonds and chocolate ice cream) and Any Given Sundae (made with cookies and cream ice cream, chocolate brownies and crumble). But for large

groups, it doesn’t get better—or bigger— than the Madden Bowl, a $99 beast featuring 10 scoops of mixed ice creams, caramelized bananas, brownies, clover honey and crispy bacon, all smothered with butterscotch and fudge sauce.

If you want to hang out late, the restaurant o ers a late-night pizza party menu from 10 p.m.-midnight Sunday through Thursday and from 10 p.m.-2 a.m. Friday and Saturday. Nosh on pepperoni or Italian sausage pies, country-style breaded chicken tenders or Flanker mix (chili-lime roasted nuts and dried fruit) while enjoying $8 pints or $28 pitchers of your favorite beers.

Tiësto’s Resorts World residency puts his bumpin’ beats on full display

When Tijs Verwest became known to the world as Tiësto, he joined a pantheon of pioneering DJs such as Sasha, John Digweed, BT and Paul Oakenfold who shepherded electronic dance music from its newbeat phase to the acid house and trance eras. Tiësto had made a name for himself in his native Holland by the time rave culture emerged, but his adoption of the trance sound and enthusiastic endorsements from figures such as Oakenfold led him to being the first superstar DJ of the 21st century. We recently sat down and talked with him about his time performing in Vegas.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR RESIDENCY AT ZOUK NIGHTCLUB. It’s been incredible. I was at Hakkasan for seven years—a long time. I was ready for a new challenge. I know Zouk from Singapore; I played that club many times. That’s the original Zouk. So when they came here to Las Vegas, I was very excited. They showed me all the plans, of the resort, of the nightclub, the pool party. I was like, “This is fresh, new.” The club has been booming. It’s packed every week. It’s incredible because Vegas in general—the (EDM) scene has grown so much.

hotel buildings. I never expected it. But I’m very happy that it happened. You’ve always changed your style, changed with the times or been ahead of the game.

WHY DO YOU THINK IT’S IMPORTANT TO CHANGE UP YOUR MUSICAL STYLE?

It’s just a natural progress for me. When I left trance music, I was bored of it; it all started sounding the same to me. I saw all these young DJs coming up in Holland—Afrojack, David Guetta—it was fresh, the music they were making, and I wanted to be a part of that. I moved to Sweden in 2008 and met Avicii and some other guys, and they were just making such fun music. It worked out for me.

ANY LESSONS YOU’VE LEARNED BEING IN THE INDUSTRY?

The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that you shouldn’t stress about anything. Just really enjoy what you’re doing; enjoy the moments. If you worry too much about what can happen, you can hold yourself back. And if you listen too much to the crowds you can get lost as well, so you have to go with your own gut feeling. Keep following your heart and what you want to do.

LET’S TALK ABOUT THE EDM SCENE. DID YOU EVER EXPECT IT TO EXPLODE THE WAY IT HAS? No; never. I remember I was (in Las Vegas) in 2007. I would play like three times a year in Vegas, and I would tell the promoters, “Man, I really love Vegas. I wish I could have a residency here one day. That would be amazing.” And they would say, “Yeah, that would be amazing, but that’s never going to happen.” And I was like, “Yeah, that’s never gonna happen.” Now it’s the DJs’ faces that are up on the outside of the

ANY ADVICE FOR THE NEXT GENERATION?

Just love and embrace what you want to do and really don’t do it because you think you’re going to be famous. Just do what you love, then you become the biggest because you don’t have any boundaries. If I look back at Avicii, the melodies he used and the sounds he used were so untraditional, but that made him special and I see this with new, upcoming DJs—they’re coming up with stuff that’s new and fresh, which they really love to do.

Mount Charleston

You’ve finally made it to Vegas! So many choices—you can gamble to your heart’s (and wallet’s) content, you can go on a shopping spree, you can eat at some of the world’s finest restaurants and see some of the greatest entertainers on the planet—often all in the same day! These experiences are quintessential Vegas musts and definitely contribute to a joyful and fulfilling visit. But what if that’s not enough? You may not know it, but away from the Strip, Vegas is a mini-paradise for the everyday adventurer, whether you’re venturing out during those brutal, triple-digit temperatures or during the cooler months. There are mountains to climb, trails to explore, a man-made lake to admire and nature to observe. Of course, we fully expect that you’ll be taking advantage of all the Strip has to o er. That’s why you’re here! But if you really want to stretch your legs and see a side of the Southwest you’ve never seen before, take a chance and do something new—call that Über or Lyft, head to REI for some supplies, and get o the grid. You may never want to leave!

Start o your morning by exploring one of the many hiking trails in Las Vegas. Near Lake Mead, right outside of Boulder City, is the Historic Railroad Trail (nps.gov), an easy 7.5-mile trek (round trip) that follows the old railway that transported machinery and supplies to Hoover Dam during its construction. Along the path, you’ll pass through five massive tunnels, which helps measure the scope of the dam’s construction and

shows how the project was a major feat of engineering. Another great option for easy hiking trails is Lone Mountain Park. There’s a flat-ground desert trail that loops around the tiny mountain and o ers great views of the city. But if you’d like to make that view even better, climb to the mountain’s peak. If you decide to check out either of those hiking areas, remember that the weather may reach warmer digits, so bring a lot of water and don’t forget your sunscreen. If

you’d rather not deal with any heat, however, Mount Charleston is a much cooler refuge, with temperatures nearly 20 degrees lower than in the valley. It’s home to the popular Mary Jane Falls and Cathedral Rock trails, to name a few, which are a little tougher and rockier than the previously mentioned trails, but the crisp mountain air and stunning scenery—as well as seeing a side of Las Vegas that you probably didn’t know existed— will make it all worth it.

If hiking doesn’t appeal to you, but you still want to observe and enjoy nature, that’s not a problem. The Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve (cityofhenderson.com) is a tranquil place to view resident birds like roadrunners and verdin, as well as nesting American avocets and black-necked stilts. Go to Floyd Lamb State Park and you might wonder if you’re still in Las Vegas. The small oasis has lush vegetation, a quaint ranch and a few fishing ponds filled with ducks and geese— you’ll even come across a few peacocks. But if you want to see some nature without leaving your car, take a drive along the 13-mile scenic loop at Red Rock Canyon

Grand Canyon

(redrockcanyonlv.org), where you’ll be able to view unique red rock formations and wideopen desert landscapes. If you feel compelled to leave the cool air-conditioning of your car, however, there are several observation points and overlooks where you can walk around and further explore the canyon.

In speaking of canyons, while it’s not Vegas, the Grand Canyon is too close to not be part of a Southern Nevada experience. If you don’t know where to start, try Grand Canyon West ( grandcanyonwest.com). They o er a one-stop shop of ways to view the Grand Canyon and its surrounding areas, such as walking along the glass-paneled Skywalk or taking a helicopter tour. There’s also a convenient shuttle service that circulates through Guano Point, Eagle Point and Hualapai Ranch, allowing you to explore the West Rim at your own pace.

What’s great about the desert is daytime temperatures can still warm the body so visitors have the opportunity to enjoy some of Vegas’ watery attractions, even in fall weather. Take a short drive o the Strip to Lake Las Vegas for the popular Lake Las Ve-

gas Water Sports (lakelasvegaswatersports. com). It’s the total package for fun on the water, with electric boats, kayaks and paddle boards available for rent (reservations highly recommended). Or head a little farther down the road and you’ll find Lake Mead (nps.gov).

It’s one of the nation’s largest man-made lakes, so there’s a lot to explore. Entry to the lake allows you to access relaxing beach ar-

eas, including Boulder Beach, and its several marinas, like Lake Mead Marina and Lake Mead Boat Harbor, where you can rent pontoon boats, sports boats and WaveRunners through Boating Lake Mead (boatinglakemead.com). Maybe all that water will remind you of something like the Bellagio Fountains, and you’ll want to head right back to what you came for: that fabulous Las Vegas Strip.

Peter Frampton beats back a debilitating condition to shine on in concert

Don’t hesitate to catch Peter Frampton on tour this year, and not just because your love won’t wait. Despite a yearslong battle with an immune disorder that a ects his guitar-playing muscles, the songwriter of ’70s mellow gold classic “Baby, I Love Your Way” appears to be keeping his condition under control. After wrapping his Finale: The Farewell Tour in November, Frampton made concert commitments for 2023, including his upcoming Vegas show.

Frampton seemed like an overnight sensation to American pop music fans when Frampton Comes Alive! catapulted him to the top of rock stardom’s hierarchy. Rock fans of the time knew him

as the taller guitarist in seminal British hard rock outfit Humble Pie, his husky baritone and deft guitar lines perfectly contrasting with the late Steve Marriott’s style-setting frontman’s tenor and power chording.

As Humble Pie’s management influenced Marriott to eliminate acoustic sets and add backup singers, Frampton went his own way. Four solo albums scored him a decent following but little chart success. Then came 1976’s Frampton Comes Alive!

8 p.m. Aug. 18, starting at $79 plus tax and fee. ticketmaster.com

In the wake of a blockbuster live album turning Kiss into megastars, a double LP featuring Frampton’s best work was ripe for platinum sales.

Frampton quickly went from respected musician to magazine cover pretty boy. His angelic countenance on Frampton Comes Alive!’s cover did much to create that perception. The sensitive lover who expressed himself in the lyrics was an alternative to hard rock’s squeeze-my-lemon

38 | 8.13.23 Las Vegas Magazine

braggadocio. While other bands sang of one-night stands, Frampton led off Side Two of his biggest recording with “All I Want to Be (Is by Your Side).”

Alas, Frampton’s success made him a scapegoat as punk rock swept the landscape clear of longhaired singers wielding custom Les Pauls. Both Frampton and the Bee Gees took hits to their careers after starring in 1978 film Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band

There was nowhere to go but down. Frampton had raised the bar for record sales that future blockbusters would be measured by until the gargantuan success of Michael Jackson’s Thriller in 1983. Then he crashed.

By the mid-’80s, Frampton was the subject of “where are they now” stories in publications such as Rolling Stone He was hardly done, though. Frampton persevered as music trends changed. The nostalgia cycle turned and veteran musicians found themselves as much in demand as the vinyl albums now selling in stores specializing in 12-inch turntable slabs of analog audio glory.

Frampton now plays for the family of friends he namechecks on “Lines on My Face,” a Comes Alive track that he plays in his current live sets along with “Shine On,” “Show Me the Way” and his talk-box guitar effect magnum opus “Do You Feel Like We Do.” He also covers Soundgarden and a few Humble

Pie songs, much to the delight of dedicated Framptonians. Even better, he duets with Dolly Parton on “Baby, I Love Your Way” on her upcoming studio album and plays a guitar solo on her cover of “Let It Be,” which features Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr.

The home’s centerpiece, the great room, is truly gorgeous, a space that blends indoor and outdoor living.

Panoramic windows and multiple glass sliders provide plenty of natural light, not to mention great views of the golf course and Strip. A close

second is the large gourmet kitchen, featuring a central island, breakfast bar, sleek countertops, custom softclose cabinets, a dumbwaiter that serves the lower level, and top-ofthe-line, stainless steel appliances and appliance garage. There’s also a butler’s pantry that includes two dishwashers, warming drawer, and plenty of cabinet and counter space. Every bedroom here has been designed with ultimate comfort in mind. The master suite features a built-in bookcase (which houses a refrigerator and fireplace), while all other bedrooms are en-suite.

Explore further and you’ll also find a wet bar (with multiple TVs for enjoying sports or movies), climate-controlled wine room, an office space with built-in rift-cut white oak custom cabinetry, pool bath and outside shower and more.
