Let Us Entertain

This week’s issue of Las Vegas Magazine features an interview with Zoe Tan, the senior vice president of Neon Global, a company that brought the Strip attractions like The Hunger Games: The Exhibition at MGM Grand and Marvel Avengers S.T.A.T.I.O.N. at Treasure Island (“Laws of Attractions,” p. 38). In speaking with editor at large Brock Radke, Tan remembers a time when she was a tourist here and had very limited options for entertainment. We’re happy to report that’s no longer the case! Everywhere you turn in Las Vegas, entertainment options abound. This week’s issue is jampacked with shows, concerts, attractions and so much more.

AREA15 has, in just a few short years, become one of Las Vegas’ premier attractions, an all-inone destination o ering world-class art, dining, entertainment, interactive installations and more. And more o erings are in the works (“2.0 and Beyond,” p. 34).

One of music’s greatest artists, Beyoncé, has launched her fi rst tour in more than six years, and she’s stopping by Allegiant Stadium for what should surely be one of this year’s entertainment highlights (“Sonic Spectacular,” p. 36 ).

One of the Strip’s longest-running shows, Tournament of Kings at Excalibur, continues to pack the house with families hungry for a little medieval merriment—and for good reason: It incorporates all the best elements of entertainment into one package. (“All-In-One Fun,” p. 40).

One of the best downtown party spots, Stadium Swim, launches its fi rst-ever After Dark Summer Concert this week. It’s sure to be a blast, featuring acts like The Knocks, Dos Lonely Boys and more (“At Sundown, It’s Party Time,” p. 20).

All this is a long way of saying: If you can’t fi nd entertainment, you’re doing Vegas wrong.

Wake Up to Wonderfulness

This brunch with a Latin American twist is a must

Delicious new things are happening at Chica. The Latin cuisine is a celebration of food that combines the traditional flavors found in countries across South America, including Venezuela, chef Lorena Garcia’s home country.

Garcia, the first Latin American female chef to open a restaurant on the Las Vegas Strip, shines the spotlight on bold flavors and rich traditions, including creations from her own family’s recipe books. The result is a menu packed with mouth-watering, depth-of-flavor dishes; and recently the restaurant has introduced even more deliciousness with a new weekend brunch menu.

A must-start order is Lorena’s arepa basket. The vessel is filled with little discs of goodness—various small arepas in flavors like beet, cilantro, black bean and cheese, served with a side of nata butter. Light and fluffy, these may have you fighting your tablemates over the last one.

Traditional breakfast dishes include a Latin twist on steak and eggs with the bistec con huevos, a 6-ounce strip loin, two eggs any style, papas bravas (breakfast potatoes) and a salsa criolla. (Let me just take a break here to mention that Chica’s papas bravas are some of the best you will ever taste in Las Vegas; you can order these as a side if it doesn’t come with your dish.) Another Latin twist on breakfast includes the

chorizo and arepa Benedict, housemade Mexican chorizo and poached eggs piled on to those little arepa discs and topped with guacamole and a jalapeño scallion espuma.

Fans of seafood during brunch can dig into the seafood arroz negro, a bounteous dish filled with grilled shrimp, squid ink sofrito rice, avocado, Oaxacan pasilla cream, pickled onions and lime. Or try the flavor-packed mezcal-cured salmon tostadas served with salted cured cactus, guacamole and uni creama.

For a sweet bite, order the strawberry guava waffle, cut into a few light and fluffy triangles and served with a cream cheese whipped cream, toasted pepitas and a side of tangy guava sauce for dipping—all these flavors pair perfectly.

The brunch menu here is packed, so the previously mentioned dishes can be followed with other selections like the wagyu quesa-birria tacos, charred poblano quesadilla, Yucatecan breakfast gorditas, buñelo donuts, dulce de leche French toast and roasted street corn.

Libations include bubbles by the bottle, fresh, hand-pressed juices and specialty cocktails such as the Espress Yourself with Don Julio reposado, cold brew, Licor 43, Frangelico and agave. –Kiko Miyasato

In the Business of Creating Taste Twists

Celebrity chef brings unique game-day eatery to the Strip

Whether you’re rooting for the Aces, the Raiders or the Golden Knights, there are plenty of screens to catch all your favorite Las Vegas sports teams at Guy Fieri’s Flavortown Sports Kitchen . The recently opened hot spot at Horseshoe Las Vegas is covered in high-definition TVs and sports memorabilia, creating the perfect atmosphere to accompany its innovative menu of bar classics with Flavortown twists.

“Most people come into Vegas once a year, if they’re lucky,” Fieri said. “I think it’s my responsibility that when they come in, we give them the best experience we can.”

What makes a dining experience better than a shareable snack to whet your appetite? At Flavortown, the mayor has your back with Guy’s Awesome Pretzel Pull Apart, featuring baked pretzel bites with oozing pale ale fondue, provolone, maple-bacon aïoli, Parmesan and bacon dust. You can also chow down on the Outta Bounds Onion Loaf with crispy, pull-apart onion straws, bourbon brown sugar barbecue sauce, buttermilk ranch, jalapeños and scallions.

When it comes to mains, expect to have a hard time choosing. With two renditions of Fieri’s iconic Trash Can Nachos (one with cheeseburger

toppings and one with smoked brisket), and creative burgers like the Crispy Cheese, featuring a crispy cheese skirt and donkey sauce, there’s no shortage of great options.

If you favor lighter fare, the Watermelon Mezcal salad packs a refreshing punch with Santo Mezquila infused watermelon, tomato, cucumber, arugula, pepitas brittle and pickled watermelon, topped with crumbled cotija. For something more decadent, why not devour the “Do-Nut Try This At Home” donut burger, which is served on a homemade brioche donut.

Other inventive highlights include the Quesa-Birria Mexican “Pizza,” a cheese-crust quesadilla topped with braised beef and served with birria consomé, and the Winner Winner Chicken Dinner, which features crispy fried chicken, mac ’n’ cheese, and jalapeño cornbread. For vegetarians, the “Fun-Guy” sandwich makes for a meatless meal that packs umami flavor.

Imbibe with flavored margaritas and signature cocktails or indulge in the Triple Double Ice Cream Sandwiches to round out your meal with something sweet. –Em Jurbala

Everything and More

This variety show checks all the boxes

It’s a question I’ve asked myself many, many times over the years, watching the ridiculously talented individuals who compete on America’s Got Talent: “Why aren’t more of these amazing people performing on the Strip?” Well, a few years ago, my prayers were answered in the form of America’s Got Talent Presents SUPERSTARS Live, a variety show that features a rotating lineup of some of the greatest AGT acts of all time under one roof.

While many shows are advertised as having something for everyone, this

show has truly delivered on that promise over the years.

Magic acts featured have included Dustin Tavella (the winner of his AGT season), Mervant Vera, who creates spontaneous raps to go along with his amazing sleight-of-hand illusions, and Léa Kyle, a quick-change artist who blew away judge Heidi Klum, getting a Golden Buzzer in the process.

Laughter comes courtesy of The Human Fountains, tuxedo-clad men who spit water in unison, not only into the air but occasionally each other’s mouths.

Acrobatic acts have included Duo Transcend, a husband and wife who keep each other suspended above the stage, and Aidan Bryant, who performs using props to propel himself in the air.

Singers of all styles have graced the stage, including Jimmie Herrod (whose rendition of “Tomorrow” made judge Simon Cowell reluctantly agree that it is a great song) and Kodi Lee (the winner of his AGT season), whose singing brings you to tears. –Ken Miller

Can You Handle

It?

Test your limits hundreds of feet in the air with The STRAT’s thrill rides

“You must be high.” Whether or not you’ve ever heard that term in your day-to-day life, you’ll experience it when you head up to the observation deck at The STRAT for a little fun in the sun. At the top of the iconic tower at the hotel-resort are three thrill rides that will leave you feeling brave and bemused, dazed and confused, all at the same time.

The story of those amusement rides begins with the gala opening of The STRAT casino in 1996, where two rides were introduced: The Big Shot and the Let It Ride High roller coaster. The drop tower ride Big Shot, looking like the biggest ring-the-bell game you’ve ever seen, propels its riders straight up at approximately 45 mph from 921 feet to 1,081 feet. No, you can’t wear your flip-flops.

Although the roller coaster closed in 2005, two other heart-pounding rides opened. The X-Scream actually emulates a roller coaster itself, as a car rolls back and forth on a piece on track. Of course, it’s not exactly the gentlest of motions, and it may just startle the heck out of you. And then, of course, it’s time to get tipped over the edge—and if that doesn’t freak you out, we don’t know what will.

Wait, we do know what will: The huge arcing arms of the inverted centrifuge ride Insanity, which hangs you 64 feet over the edge of the tower while rapidly spinning (3 Gs). And it’s not even level—you will be spinning at an angle. Oh, sweet geez.

All the rides have separate requirements, from age to height, weight and medical restrictions.

Bonus thrill points: Jump off the tower. Yes, you can, on SkyJump Las Vegas, a controlled plummet all the way to the bottom, 855 feet down. Chicken out? You? No way. –Nina King

Popping Into Prehistory

Interactive exhibit brings dinosaurs to animatronic life

I’d be willing to bet that I am not alone in wishing I lived in a world where I could visit an island theme park full of prehistoric critters, brought to life by scientists who extracted prehistoric DNA from a preserved mosquito—even though a certain film would warn against such endeavors. Luckily, Imagine Exhibitions brought the next best thing to Las Vegas with Dino Safari: A Walk Thru Adventure, which puts these magnificent beasts on display without the risk of Stone-

Aged strays running amok on the casino floor.

The exhibit houses more than 30 dinosaurs, brought to life in animatronic form and accompanied by insightful scientific information, interactive elements and immersive settings. You’ll see dinos from each continent and all your favorites, like the T. rex and the Spinosaurus. One installation even features Nevada’s own Nevadadromeus, a recently discovered dinosaur native to this very region.

Dino Safari is a perfect outing for families. Visitors will receive a passport to Pangea, where they can mark which continents they’ve visited and what materials they’ve studied. (As a bonus, there’s a pretty sweet coloring page in the back.) A mid-exhibit jungle gym provides a perfect place for young paleontologists that have some excess energy. –

A barbershop fronts for one seriously cool speakeasy

Tucked away into a corner off the casino floor of The Cosmopolitan is a spot that is so much more than what it appears. You’ll first come across a petite space designed in the classic barbershop style. Three chairs await those looking for a range of services: hot towel shaves, haircuts and more. But that’s only the beginning at The Barbershop Cuts & Cocktails

“You get your drink, you can sit back and shoot the s**t with the barbers,” said Nick Karel, head barber and manager. It’s a very friendly shop.” Appointments are booked every 45 minutes, and reservations are highly suggested.

But when the sun starts to set, groups of people start making their way inside the barbershop and

Tips/Insider Knowledge

Your barbershop appointment comes with a complimentary cocktail from the speakeasy.

Karaoke is backed by a live band— it’s your chance to be a rock star!

heading into the janitor’s closet. Once inside the janitor’s closet, a slit slides open on a door, words are exchanged and admission is granted inside the barbershop’s hidden gem, a speakeasy.

A completely different world from the shop is revealed—a large, dark, seductive space with classy Prohibition-era décor. A large bar, several sofas and table seating and a stage help set the scene for nights of live music and original craft cocktails.

“There’s nothing like the Barbershop in Las Vegas,” said lead mixologist Tony Arnone. “It’s the epitome of whiskey and rock ’n’ roll.”

Speaking of rock ’n’ roll, enjoy live music seven days a week, not to mention a lineup of musical artists that occasionally stop by and hop onstage to join the band. (Past surprise performances have included Machine Gun Kelly, Zac Brown, Anderson.Paak, Bruno Mars and Gavin DeGraw.)

When it comes to cocktails, “The beverage program here is based on modern, classic-era cocktails with original recipes that are focused around bourbon and Scotch,” said Arnone. “I put so much passion and love into the all the cocktails that I create.”

Try the Six String Sling, with a Suntory Toki Japanese whiskey base and a housemade passion fruit and cherry ice pop, and the Moustache Ride with Teeling whiskey, Cherry Heering, vanilla orgeat and Guinness and topped with Johnnie Walker Black Label Islay Scotch. “If you’re looking for something different with a nice velvety texture and mouth-feel and elements of malty chocolatiness but also with a dash of smoke, I would highly recommend it,” Arnone said. –Kiko Miyasato

Friends With Benefits

Sir Winston

All hail the doggie of Westgate Las Vegas!

This National Dog Day (Aug. 26), there’s a very important furry friend and local celebrity that we’re celebrating: Say hello to Sir Winston of Westgate Las Vegas. The 4 1/2-year-old West Highland White Terrier first arrived on property at just a few months old.

“We found Winston in a pet shop in South Carolina in 2018, when he was just 10 weeks old,” says his caretaker and adopted father, Owen Parmele. “He boarded a flight and he arrived (in Las Vegas) and walked out of his cage like, ‘Here I am!’”

Parmele, who then worked as the executive director of retail operations at Westgate and has since retired, brought Winston to work every day so Winston could learn the ropes and serve as the property’s mascot and friend to everyone—often appearing at employee events and representing the hotel around the city at various events.

“When it’s time to go to work, Winston sits on the armrest of my SUV on the drive to Westgate,” Parmele says. “He knows where we’re going. He gets excited when he sees the hotel.”

• Product • Sir Winston of Westgate merchandise

Grab your piece of Sir Winston of Westgate by stopping by the property’s Westgate gift shop. There you will find Sir Winston-branded merchandise like T-shirts for both adults and kids, tote bags, accessories, tchotchkes, and even plush toy versions of Sir Winston. –KM

Away from his official duties, Winston shares a home with his two brothers and sister, he loves his Pup-Peroni treats, and he helps look after the foster fur babies that his dad takes in.

“He is just a normal, crazy dog at home,” Parmele says. “But when Winston comes to the hotel, he puts on his hotel face. When he comes to the hotel, it’s all business for him. I trained him to be friendly, not afraid of people and welcoming to everyone. He’s a joy to everyone. He knows he’s here to represent the Westgate.” –Kiko

Benefit Every Friday from 3-4 p.m. in the hotel lobby, you can meet and take pictures with Sir Winston for free.

Famous Foods Street Eats captures the best of multiple global cuisines

AVOID THE FIGHT that’s sure to come when it’s time to choose where to eat. No tussles over sushi or barbecue, noodles or duck; when you eat at Famous Foods Street Eats you can have it all.

The 24,000-square-foot Resorts

World Las Vegas food hall opened with the property in 2021, and helped solidify a burgeoning food hall scene in Las Vegas. Famous Foods is set off with a cobblestoned “street” leading along an expansive, loose U-shaped area, with the stalls ranged up and down the U, and across from it, near the casino. A wall of windows opposite allows natural light to pour into the hall across multiple seating areas.

The food hall channels street cuisines from across the globe, with an emphasis on Asian cuisine, from Chinese to Malaysian. Many menus were designed by established names in the global food arena, from Bib Gourmand and Michelin Plate concepts to James Beard Awardwinning chef Marcus Samuelsson. Since opening, several new food experiences have been added to the hall.

For cocktails, in the very center is the circular Famous Foods Center Bar, which is accented by colorful neon signs advertising wines, cocktails and spirits, with bar seating and TVs surrounding it, making for a cool hang during the day or night. There’s also a speakeasy, Here Kitty Kitty Vice Den , in the form of a gift shop with a hidden entrance to the nightlife venue. Plus, different drinks are available at multiple stalls.

Some of the more celebrated offerings include Kuru Kuru Pa from DJ Steve Aoki and his restaurateur brother Kevin Aoki (the Aokis’ father was behind the creation of Benihana). This Japanese, anime-inspired stall features a Snake River Farms wagyu bowl, kimchi, and the Chibi chicken bowl. Check out the screen touting The Yakitori Adventures of Chibi Aoki next to the menu board.

Get Samuelsson’s famous hot and spicy fried chicken and wings at Streetbird . The stall also offers Impossible’s chicken nuggets, giving

vegans a hearty snack to dip in signature sauces.

Pepita’s Kitchen comes courtesy of the Lechon Diva, Dedet de la Fuente, who is known in the Philippines for suckling pig creations. That influence shines here, where you see the suckling pig prominently on display in the corner stall. The lechon and truffled rice includes fire-roasted pork, shitake and truffle rice along with the crispy skin.

Zouk Group’s popular Resorts World restaurant, FUHU, is also represented with Fuhu Shack , serving roast Peking duck, in bowl-, taco- and burritostyle. Nearby is a sit-down restaurant, Cha Chaan Teng , with an extensive menu from several Asian cuisines like Thai, Vietnamese, and Chinese, and includes dim sum, shrimp har gow, congee, noodle soup, and a whole crispy Peking duck.

At Nori Bar Sushi, Sake & Handroll , there’s a long sushi bar providing plenty of seating for watching the chefs, with made-toorder handrolls and sashimi. You can also order sakes, matcha, seasonal tea and Japanese beer. One of the best things are the roll sets, starting at only $23.

What else? There’s so much, like Boon Tong Kee. You’ll find decades-old recipe Singapore chicken rice, with chicken on a bed of flavorful chicken broth-infused rice.

Googgle Man’s Char Kuey Teow serves up egg and rice noodles stir-fried with seafood and vegetables on charcoal-fired stoves. Burger Barn

by Famous Foods Street Eats serves American staples like the cheeseburger, but also the Lucky Tiger Burger, with teriyaki sauce, tobanjan slaw, cheese and kimchi mayonnaise.

A newer offering is Han’s Fish & Chips, where you can get a plate of the traditional U.K. dishes with cod or haddock and fries, or get it tucked in a bun. And yes, malt vinegar comes with it. For Thai flavor, visit Ten Suns Braised Beef, a Bangkok eatery that earned Michelin Guide Bib Gourmand recognition, and serves up egg noodles in beef broth, with brisket or steak options.

Geylang Claypot Rice is a decadesold Singaporean restaurant that has earned a Michelin Plate award. You’ll find beef and chicken options, with ingredients like salted cod, preserved cabbage, poached eggs and more, plus a vegetarian one, too, with maitake mushrooms, peppers and onion yu choy and a vegan oyster sauce.

Want more? Hara Juku Ramen features the Build-A-Ramen with basic broth and noodles. Choose from a list of classic and inventive ramen addins. Wu Zhang Artisan Noodles has

hand-pulled thin noodles with minced pork gravy, while next door at Ah Chun Shandong Dumpling (a 2020 Bib Gormand choice), get jiaozi dumplings, and pan-fried bao. There’s a vegetarian option, here, too.

Blood Bros Texas Barbecue hails from Houston, with brisket and pulled pork, roasted jalapeño creamed corn, and potato salad. But there’s Asian influence, here, too, with shichimi

togarashi dusted turkey breast and brisket fried rice.

The addition of 200-person venue space The Wall to AREA15 has pushed the immersive-experience destination’s programming into uncharted territory. There is enough to see, hear, dine on and drink any time during

opening hours, but AREA15 now hosts weekend DJ massives in both projection-mapping venue The Portal and The Wall, as well as bands such as Man or Astro-man? at the latter. Man or Astro-man? would be one a

slew of live music options if booked into a live venue on the Strip. Playing a Sunday evening at The Wall makes a Las Vegas tour stop special. The growth of AREA15 is hardly slowing, though. Soon there will be an AREA15 District with more options such as indoor skydiving, and Universal Parks and Resorts has chosen AREA15 as the site for 20 acres of even more mind-blowing experiences.

AREA15 is on a mission to become the experiential center of the world
Matt Kelemen Photo by Laurent Velazquez

Considering the intellectual property archives of Universal, the possibilities are staggering. “The footprint of AREA15, along with the tenants, is going to double,” says AREA15 COO Dan Pelson. “We believe and we’re confident that AREA15 and this District, with our partners and our own businesses, will be the biggest experiential hub in the world.”

The common thread among the experiences is mind-blowfulness. When Pelson and his colleagues consider a new feature for AREA15, they ask themselves, “Is it mind-blowing?”

The latest a rmative answer to that question led to the opening of Kaia Handroll, a sushi restaurant with a “vibrant, modern take” on traditional Japanese tastes and techniques.

Kaia (“of the sea”) is helmed by head chef Joseph Soto and sous chefs Juan Laguana and Christopher Soldivieri, who serve up lobster tru e,

blue crab and bluefin tuna rolls in an atmosphere that draws upon a water theme, art and augmented reality to distinguish itself. It takes its place in a dining portfolio that includes The Beast by Todd English, Lumin Café by Elizabeth Blau at cinematic venue Illuminarium and Lost Spirits Distillery.

Lost Spirits is the big dog of libation destinations that includes Oddwood Bar, The Asylum Bar + Arcade and Datamosh inside Omega Mart. Omega Mart must be experienced to be believed. It seems like a surreal grocery store at first, but hidden passages lead to an inner world of art installations, interactive tech and conspiracy theories.

Attractions Alley, “a carnival midway for the digital age,” may be new to returning guests who come for outdoor events in the A-Lot, dress-up DJ events at the Portal or high-altitude attractions like Lifto . Meditative minds might enjoy Frequency

Breathing during the day, or the 8 p.m. magic show Smokus Pocus

There just isn’t enough time to fully explore AREA15’s o erings in one visit. “There’s so much e ort going on here that we believe when we’re done no one will be competing with Las Vegas when it comes to this,” says Pelson. “This is going to be at the center of Las Vegas and the center of the world when it comes to experiential.”

is arguably the most spectacular concert tour ever undertaken by any entertainer. Inarguably, the bar has been raised, and any usurpers to Queen Bey’s throne would have to possess her arsenal of vocal and dance abilities, beauty, discipline, stamina, sensuality, vision, design aesthetics, fashion sense, business savvy and complete command of the stage, let alone her universe. Her empowerment energy electrifies the air. No one else is likely to come close to having as fervent a

following for a generation. There’s only room for one Madonna-level superstar at a time, and Beyoncé’s time is now. Demand for tickets for the initial dates in North America and Europe caused systems to crash and led to the scheduling of additional dates.

Reviews have been overwhelmingly positive. Rather than sprinkle a few new songs among two-and-a-half hours of greatest hits, she performs Renaissance practically in its entirety interspersed with catalog cuts during a marathon multiact, multithemed musical marvel. The show is divided into acts with Beyoncé’s ensembles thematically in sync with set designs by London-based Stufish (U2 and Rolling Stones, among others).

Beyoncé’s artistic development has been public and prolific. Her critically acclaimed 2016 release Lemonade was conceived as a visual album,

an approach she applied to her 2020 Disney+ project Black Is King. Her Lion King-inspired tribute to African heritage and black empowerment was like her post-graduate work after her triumphant homage to the drum corps culture of historically black universities at Coachella in 2017, where she demonstrated she had the sensibilities of an A-list Broadway producer.

army as director and producer, and her BeyGOOD philanthropic initiative benefits marginalized and underserved communities surrounding every tour stop, as well as scholarship funds to the tune of $1 million.

With Renaissance, she raised the bar even further. Dedicated to the LGBTQ+ community, as is the tour, it’s an odyssey of dancefloor music with strong flavors of deep house in cuts like No. 1 single “Break My Soul.” Beyoncé possesses a powerhouse upper register and a mastery of melisma, but the warmth of her vocals when she inhabits her lower register elevates Renaissance to a transcendent sonic experience.

Her first solo tour in six years would have to be majestic and monumental. Rehearsals were held in a French stadium before the first show on May 10 in Stockholm. She oversees a small

Having Ti any & Co. on board as the tour’s o cial jeweler enables Beyoncé to add further bedazzlement to a dazzling wardrobe curated by stylist Shiona Turini. From custom Alexander McQueen couture to a dress by Japan’s Anrealage that is color-responsive to UV light, Beyonce’s Renaissance fashions have been and are being well-documented on Instagram. And it’s no secret that she rides a sparkly steed inspired by the glass horse on the Renaissance album cover during one of many climactic points in the show. She makes it all look e ortless. It’s not. Beyoncé is peaking right now, artistically and physically. The only place to go next is in a minimalist, intimate direction. For now, in the moment, Queen Bey is busy making history.

Talking with Zoe Tan, the woman behind Avengers and Hunger Games exhibits

Marvel Avengers S.T.A.T.I.O.N. at Treasure Island and The Hunger Games: The Exhibition at MGM Grand are two of the most popular interactive, family-friendly attractions along the Las Vegas Strip. And these immersive experiences are not beloved just because of the famed filmed franchises that inspired them; there’s a lot to explore, see and do at each exhibition. Here’s some exciting news for fans: Zoe Tan, senior vice president of Neon Global, the parent company that develops these and other attractions, says new projects are in the works and coming soon to Las Vegas.

What has it been like for you to work on these exciting attractions?

I’ve been working on this for 10-plus

years. The company I started with, Victory Hill, was acquired by Neon Global in 2019, and we had started o in New York City in Times Square and slowly expanded. The original legacy set from (Times Square) is the one sitting now in Las Vegas at Avengers S.T.A.T.I.O.N., so that’s close to our hearts because it has a lot of legacy artifacts from the first Avengers series.

How important is Las Vegas to the company’s growth?

Las Vegas continues to expand at such a rapid pace, and for us, we have a few strategic markets—London is another, Singapore, and Australia and Japan— that we’ve singled out that have a huge tourism base and a huge demand

for attractions and entertainment. Las Vegas is probably the one that shines through above all because along that short five miles of the Strip, you have all these top attractions and developers, all within a small radius. That’s why we feel like we can bring some new blood to Las Vegas, where there’s a lot of entertainment at night, nice dinners and shows and nightclubs. We see a demand for daytime entertainment, and that’s where we fit in.

What other factors make your attractions such unique experiences in Las Vegas?

Our attractions can be a quick in-andout experience, you can spend an hour

and take a look at the artifacts and be immersed in our stories and find that connection with the films you’ve watched for the past 10 years, then you’re done, and you can move on to your next Las Vegas (destination). That’s really our business model. When I was a tourist in Las Vegas, I struggled to find things to do in the day other than go shopping or sit by the pool, but when you’re in Las Vegas, you still want to be entertained.

Can you talk about the creative process behind taking these very recognizable movie properties and piecing together memorable, interactive experiences?

One thing at the core for our creative team is how do we set ourselves apart from other so-called “immersive” experiences. That word is a tad bit overused; not all experiences are

Marvel

truly immersive. We like to use a combination of elements, including cutting-edge technology, to allow you to feel like you’re walking through a movie set and you can become part of the story. And we do the research when it comes to our consumers to better understand what they resonate with most when it comes to those stories. Using Hunger Games as the example, we all know when we (think of) that, we think of archery, Katniss with her bow and arrow. So, we worked day and night to build this archery experience for The Hunger Games: The Exhibition, and it cost a heavy sum of money.

What can you say about the next projects?

The

It’s been an interesting journey for us in Las Vegas and we have a lot of focus here in terms of what we want to do to expand. By 2024, you’ll see a series of new products opening up and a series of exciting announcements. We haven’t announced it yet, but there’s quite a significant change coming at Treasure Island, and we’re also securing a new venue right in the middle of the Strip. Stay tuned.

ooking for something to do in Las Vegas but can’t decide whether you want to see theater, sports or engage in some audience participation? Or maybe you just want a nice meal? At Tournament of Kings, you can do all the above. It’s one of the longest-running shows on the Strip, is open to all ages, and truly has something for everyone:

40 | 8.20.23 Las Vegas Magazine
‘Tournament of Kings’ combines the best parts of entertainment into one show

Theater. This show can be seen as a straightforward coming-of-age tale at the time of King Arthur, complete with a larger-thanlife villain and good overcoming evil; Sports. You will get to see a “competition” between several different countries—Austria, France, Hungary, Ireland, Sweden, Spain and Romania—complete with jousting, javelin tossing, a race and more, most featuring some of the most well-trained horses you’ll ever seen (all of which live on-property in 19 stalls); Audience participation. You and your family will be seated in one of the different country’s sections, all different colors so you can easily tell one from another. As the proceedings unfold, you root for your country by banging on your tables, raising your hands and shouting “Huzzah!” (You are coached on this beforehand). You will be surprised how quickly you really get into the various events. The outcomes might be scripted, but it never feels that way;

A nice meal. Every attendee receives a meal that can be eaten without the use of flatware: a Cornish game hen, potatoes, seasonal vegetables and a dinner roll (menus will be adjusted for vegans, kids, gluten allergies and more). Adults can enjoy a cocktail or a beer— and yes, you can request flatware if you really need it.

And while the show has more or less remained the same from its inception in 1990, a recent change has dramatically changed the experience—the lighting has been updated to LED, allowing the behind-the-scenes crew to adjust the atmosphere dramatically. For instance, when the country of Ireland is announced, the room is flooded with green light. It truly adds an element of personality to the country you’re rooting for—and booing against. Richard Sherman, director of entertainment for Excalibur and Tournament of Kings, told Las Vegas Magazine recently that the show truly stands alone in the pantheon of Strip entertainment. “We like to call this show the ‘crown jewel of our castle,’” Sherman says. “If you have younger kids and you’re looking for a family outing, this is an excellent thing to do. It’s also a great show for people that are celebrating anniversaries. We’ve done a number of proposals here. It’s a way to get out and do something with your friends and be loud and root for something and see something that you don’t get to see every day.”

Community offers luxurious lakeside lifestyle

The Lakes in Las Vegas is a lovely stretch of homes in the western part of the city, with the 30-acre Lake Sahara acting as the centerpiece for more than 4,000 homes spread across two square miles. The master-planned community sports plenty of walking trails, mature green-

belts and proximity to the Spring Mountains and Red Rock Canyon Conservation Area. And a home has just become available in Northshore Estates, one of The Lakes’ most prestigious communities (only five homes!), which features plenty of room for the largest of families.

This 10,941-square-foot, two story estate, listed by Julian Crider of IS LUXURY, features six bedrooms, 10 bathrooms and a three-car garage, all contained in an immaculate package that will have your guests oohing and aahing at its curb appeal—a semi-circular driveway

leads you into a designer porte cochere entryway, all surrounded with lush, mature landscaping.

As you pass through the home’s wrought-iron double doors, you’ll be instantly struck by a grand foyer. Walking through, you’ll notice highlights like marble flooring, custom detailing, modern fixtures and lots of natural light, thanks to the large windows throughout.

Those highlights continue in areas like the primary living area,

finished in premium marble and hardwood, and the gourmet kitchen, featuring a large island, granite countertops, two dishwashers, a Sub-Zero refrigerator and a wine cooler. Elsewhere, you’ll find a game room, gym, theater, two separate bar areas and a sauna. All bedrooms in this home have ample closet space, not to mention tray ceilings.

As impressive as the interior is, wait until you see the backyard. It’s truly a private oasis, featuring an

infinity pool and hot tub, covered patio, fire pit, television and full custom outdoor kitchen. But what really sets this home apart from others is access to a secluded lake, complete with deck and boat. (This particular community hosts monthly music and other events on the lake.) –
