Make ’Em Laugh

In an era where no one seems to believe anything they hear, read or see, there are two things in the world I believe to be absolutely true right now: Laughter is the best medicine; and we need laughter in our lives now more than ever. Luckily Las Vegas embraces humor in a way very few cities do; we have more comedy clubs than I can list in this space, and humor is almost always a part of every show you see, from the adorable but precocious baby of Cirque du Soleil’s Mystère at Treasure Island to the comedians who emcee America’s Got Talent Presents SUPERSTARS Live at Luxor. And whether you’re rolling your eyes at dad jokes or rolling in the aisles from a superb one-liner, it’s impossible to debate the power laughter has. One could argue it might be the only thing keeping some of us sane these days.

This week’s issue of Las Vegas Magazine is dedicated to the artists who have perfected the gift of gu aws, performers who aren’t afraid to “go there” in pursuit of that all-important laugh. Few comedians in the country are hotter than Tom Segura, a master of many platforms, from stand-up to podcasting, who performs at The Cosmopolitan this week (“Laughing Matters,” p. 36 ). And a perennial favorite of Las Vegas, comedy ventriloquist Je Dunham, returns to the Bakkt Theater at Planet Hollywood Resort to show why no comedian should ever hold back (“Against the Current,” p. 34).

But this week’s issue has so much more to enjoy! Check out our feature on Edge Steakhouse at Westgate Las Vegas, a longstanding favorite that just keeps getting better (“Leading the Pack,” p. 28). And get your tickets now to see Weezer at Planet Hollywood Resort’s Bakkt Theater (“Rivers’ Rock,” p. 14).

This week, forget your cares and laugh!

One Big Celebration

Las Vegas celebrates seven decades of weddings with Caesars Palace events

Las Vegas is known for many things, but one of the biggest is its status as The Wedding Capital of the World. Over the past seven decades, more than 5 million couples have tied the knot here, with ceremonies ranging from the simple to the incredibly lavish. This year, Las Vegas has held several events centered around its 70th Anniversary Celebration, which peaks on Sept. 3 with a mass vow renewal at Caesars Palace, and a production show at the property designed specifically for the day.

Although you might not be one of the couples in the vow renewal (VIP packages that included that opportunity were anticipated to be sold out several weeks before the event), you can certainly grab a ticket for Las Vegas Will You Marry Me, a vintage Vegas-style production that features musical performances by a host of past and present Vegas entertainers.

First, participants can head to the show along with other guests—Las Vegas Will You Marry Me was produced, written and directed by longtime Las Vegas entertainment stalwarts Lorraine Hunt-Bono and Dennis Bono. Love songs from the 1950s up to now will be performed by artists such as Dennis Bono, who will also emcee the event and perform the original song, “Las Vegas Will You Marry Me,” which was written for the production.

Other artists, all well-known for many years for their various roles in Las Vegas’ entertainment scene, include Lorena Peril of Fantasy with a 2000s love song, The Righteous Brothers—Bill Medley and Bucky Heard with one from the ’60s, Travis Cloer of Jersey Boys fame with a ’60s song, Bob Anderson with a song from the ’50s, Earl Turner with an ’80s song, Clint Holmes with a ’90s tune, The Bronx Wanderers with a ’50s song, Anne Martinez with a ’70s love song and Chris Phillips of Zowie Bowie with one from the 2010s.

After the show, the vow renewal occurs, along with the champagne toast and wedding cake from Carlo’s Bake Shop.

There is a dress code (cocktail attire is perfect, and yes, you absolutely can wear a wedding dress) and the event is 18-plus. Come and feel the love.–Nina King

Rivers’ Rock

Indie band’s Vegas performance is a cool antidote for endless summer bummers

If the path that led Rivers Cuomo to write “What’s with these homies dissing my girl?/ Why do they gotta front?” ended shortly after the success of single “Buddy Holly,” Weezer would have been frozen in time as part of the ’90s alt-rock era. Fortunately, Cuomo is endlessly inquisitive, self-challenging and creatively prolific.

Cuomo’s most recent songwriting cycle resulted in the SZNZ EPs, with the fourth and final recording, Winter, released in December. It’s some of Cuomo’s best work. That’s saying a lot for someone who’s written nearly 1,000 songs and made some missteps along the way but eventually found critical acclaim and became a messianic figure to Weezer fans.

Raised on a Connecticut ashram called Yogaville, Cuomo immersed himself in early ’80s metal by the likes of Judas Priest and Quiet Riot after discovering Kiss. He became a guitar shredder with dreams of making it big in Hollywood.

The young man went west to attend music school, but received an unexpected education when he got a job at Tower Records. He warmed up to the burgeoning indie and alternative rock scenes and met bassist Matt Sharp and drummer Patrick Wilson.

They formed Weezer, got a major label deal and asked the late Ric Ocasek to produce. The result was the 1994 self-titled debut album that contained the first song to garner radio play in “Undone (The Sweater Song),” but it was “Buddy Holly” that gave them job security. The video, directed by Spike Jonze, became iconic and firmed up a foundation of success Weezer could build upon.

Sophomore album Pinkerton received mixed reviews but was embraced by committed fans and was eventually critically re-evaluated by the music press. More radio hits would come in 2001 with “Hash Pipe” and “Beverly Hills” in 2005. After 30 years of existence, Weezer is a headlining act on a path to Australia in October to play a concert with Kiss. It’s a dream come true for the boy from Yogaville with Buddy Holly glasses. –Matt

Experience the natural wonder like never before

You may have visited the Grand Canyon before, and sure, you probably had the time of your life, hiking, sightseeing and taking in the splendor of one of the seven natural wonders of the world. But until you head to Grand Canyon West, you really haven’t experienced it the way it was meant to be experienced.

Located on the Hualapai Reservation, Grand Canyon West is an all-in-one, immersive experience into the nature, culture and experiences of the Grand

Canyon. The centerpiece of Grand Canyon West is definitely the Skywalk, a semi-circular glass bridge that allows you to feel suspended over the West Rim. It’s truly an adrenaline rush like no other, but it’s just the beginning of your adventure.

As beautiful as the Grand Canyon is from the rim (or in a helicopter), there’s really nothing like seeing it while on a white-water rafting trip down the Colorado River. Not only is it a great

communal experience, it’s fun from start to finish. Just make sure you’ve got the camera handy.

Want more thrills? No problem!

Check out the zipline experience, 3,200 feet of fast-paced excitement while you soar 500 feet above the canyon floor at speeds of up to 40 mph. –Ken

Simply Fabulous

Food is focus at trendy new hot spot

Whether you’re in the mood for a chill dinner or want to get the night started early, reservations at the new HaSalon in The Venetian are called for. The trendy restaurant by Israeli chef Eyal Shani and partner Shahar Segal features a unique formula of two seatings per night (Thursday through Saturday), with a distinctive vibe at each seating.

The elegant, eclectic dining room is decorated with light, modern touches and features a multitude of elegant chandeliers in different styles, as well as a diverse array of seating options, creating a homey feel, something that was aimed for. (HaSalon translates as “living room” in Hebrew.)

For an experience focused solely on the food, make 6 p.m. reservations. To continue the party afterward, reserve for 8 p.m. Either way, order a glass of wine from the extensive list, then get ready to be wowed. Although the menu will change based on what ingredients are freshest locally, at a recent dinner appetizers were showstoppers, with names like “Pile of Beautifully Arranged Tomatoes,” which is exactly what it sounds like, but beautifully dressed and delicious. (Shani is known for his use of tomatoes in his dishes.) The Charred Beetroot Carpaccio, Dollop of Crème Fraîche Covered in Horseradish Snow does have a bite.

The second course featured three simple yet amazing dishes: 7 Ricotta Clouds, plump gnocchi as soft as a pillow; Wild Golden Okra on a Splash of Yogurt (the split vegetable is lightly fried and has little of the characteristic slickness to it); and Melanzana. The rich tomato sauce is perfect on the thin slices of baked eggplant.

For the main course, the fragrance of Striped Bass Hraime. A Story of Spicy Tomatoes wafts across the table, while Skirt Steak Bathing in Tomato Ovaries and Spicy presents sliced meat in with the seeds of tomato abounding. –Nina King

Aim for Fun

Shooting facility offers countless options for fans

The right to bear arms comes with responsibilities, regulations and restrictions. It is not permissible to carry a firearm on a commercial airplane, for example. In some states it’s not legal to own certain types of guns at all, which makes Las Vegas a destination for shooting at a range. A visit to Range 702 can lead to fulfillment of any objective related to pistols, machine guns, rifles and a few other exotic options such as a Mossberg 500 shotgun and a quadruple-barrel monster that fires nearly 65 rounds per second.

Choose one firearm or a combination in a plethora of packages that suit any conceivable shooting sojourn inside Range 702’s 17,000-square-foot facility (the largest shooting range in Nevada) just west of the south Strip. Choose from 20 weapons for the single-weapon One and Done option. The Black Ops Experience provides the dopamine rush of first-person shooter video games. Blast aliens away at Area 51 or go on a Zombie Hunt armed with a fully automatic M4, a 12-gauge shotgun, an AK-47 and a Glock.

Sign on for the Extreme Experience and get five weapons that includes a light machine gun, a fully automatic special ops rifle and a 9mm handgun. Choose the All-In Experience and get 13 weapons, including an AK-47, Uzi, Thompson submachine gun and a Desert Eagle. Both options come with decked-out VIP suites, and there’s also one-on-one training for Nevada residents new to firearms. –Matt Kelemen

A Tapas Triumph

Chic restaurant offers big flavors packed into small plates

The ambience and design of Bar Zazu is slick and sexy and the cuisine is delicious and shareable, making this restaurant the perfect experience for date night or group dining. The dishes are served tapasstyle and incorporate flavors from European cuisines. Remember, Bar Zazu is all about social dining, so sharing plates with the table is encouraged.

Start with a cheese and salumi board, which can be ordered in various sizes depending on hunger level—each board comes with various

meats and cheeses with accoutrements like apricot mostardo, spiced marcona almonds and pickled veggies. Other starters to consider include the jamon and cheese croquettes with saffron aioli and garlic aioli, roasted bone marrow (pictured), topped with trumpet mushrooms and pickled mustard and served with slices of brioche for dipping, and the tuna carpaccio, which you can pile on to squid ink flatbread, which is fresh and light with citrusy notes, and avocado and soy to round out the flavor.

Main dishes include seafood paella, prepared arroz meloso style, a Cape Grim skirt steak with a green peppercorn reduction, and the Zazu burger, piled with brisket, gorgonzola and mascarpone and served with a side of house-made chips.

End the meal with sweets like the raspberry chocolate torte, with a silky chocolate mousse, and the tropical semifreddo served with fresh pineapple chutney, cinnamon and whipped cream. –Kiko Miyasato

INTO OMEGA MART

THE MIND-BENDING WORLD OF LAS VEGAS’ MEOW WOLF OUTPOST

Putting your finger on Meow Wolf’s Omega Mart is nearly impossible. It’s a transportive, maximalist art installation, rooted in the foundation of a dense, explorative narrative. It’s a place to play and a place to study. It’s the anchor experience at Area15 and Meow Wolf’s largest installation to date, totaling 52,000 square feet. Omega Mart’s art director, Spencer Olsen, describes it as “a psychedelic sci-fi mystery that invites you to investigate as an in-world participant … or a big, fun, explorable art exhibit!” It’s utopian and somewhat dystopian. It’s an experience that refuses to be pinned down—one in which you’re allowed to stumble into a world that’s adjacent to yours, but also lightyears away. Here’s a topline look at the multidimensional environments that beg to be explored, and then explored again.

THE STORY

As you travel through Omega Mart, a rich and complex narrative begins to develop using audio, video and print media. The timeline of the story goes back hundreds of thousands of years, and breadcrumbs are scattered throughout the exhibit for visitors to uncover. Olsen recommends taking notes. “Everything is there for a reason, and we tried to add a lot of continuity so you can learn about something you find in one location elsewhere as you explore. If you think something might be a clue, take a picture.”

THE EXPERIENCE

Described as “America’s most exceptional grocery store,” walking into Omega Mart is the beginning of an adventure. “At Meow Wolf, we like to introduce visitors to our permanent exhibitions in a way that’s familiar, whether that be a seemingly average neighborhood home—as with the House of Eternal Return in Santa Fe— or a grocery store like we have with Omega Mart,” Olsen said. “From there, we present opportunities to expand one’s way of thinking, and new ways to experience otherwise average tasks and processes through the exploration of creative narratives.” As soon as you drop into Omega Mart, other exhibits come into focus, with four main anchor spaces in the exhibit.

+
Pro tip: Ask an Omega Mart employee about the VIP Package to enhance your experience.

Omega Mart is stocked with fun and uncommon products to explore— all with the uncanny ability to fulfill shoppers’ desires.

THE FACTORY

A multilevel playground, the Factory is where Dramcorp produces its mysterious products.

325

The number of artists and collaborators that have contributed to Omega Mart—comprised of four anchor spaces with 60 additional unique environments and 250 unique projects throughout the exhibit.

OMEGA MART

A grocery shopping experience like no other.

IS IT SIMILAR TO THE HOUSE OF ETERNAL RETURN IN SANTA FE AND CONVERGENCE STATION IN DENVER?

Yes and no, but you’ll have to dive in to find out. “For the narrative deep divers, there are similarities,” Olsen said. “They are completely different artistically and experientially, but there is an underlying sub-fiction in stories about groups and entities with the ability to travel between worlds. There will be more revealed around these relationships between the stories in Denver and other future exhibits.”

DRAMCORP OFFICES

Dramcorp is the parent company to Omega Mart, and as you’ll soon find out, it’s hiding a secret.

Should I take the kids?

Yes, Omega Mart is a playground for everyone who enjoys mystery and mischief at any age.

SPACES WITHIN SPACES

Within each anchor space, there is an everunfolding cast of unique experiences, and choosing a favorite may be impossible. “It’s hard to pick one [favorite experience], so I’ll pick some distinct ones,” Olsen said. “Pulse, by Claudia Bueno, achieves something remarkable. I’ve heard someone describe it as ‘healing,’ which is as good of an experience as I can think of. Uploaded Ghosts, by Stephen Hendee, with musical collaboration by Beach House, feels like the artistic and emotional summit of the show,” Olsen said.

DATAMOSH

Omega Mart’s speakeasy features eight specialty craft cocktails, including The Source.

Flair bartender throws guests a good time

For 22 years, flair bartender Tim “Flippy” Morris has helped to make Carnaval Court at Harrah’s a must-visit Las Vegas destination.

A self-taught flair bartender, Morris moved to Vegas in 2001 and decided to

Edge Steakhouse is a model of service, menu and atmosphere for others to follow

Trends in dining change at such a fast pace that it can be hard to keep up. Nowhere is this more common than the Las Vegas Strip, where just this year at least 10 new eateries have

opened. In addition, existing rooms often update their menus to reflect popular leanings. It’s exciting, but for some diners it can feel overwhelming. Luckily, there are some

establishments in town that stick to the elements that made them famous in the fi rst place. First and foremost on that list is Edge Steakhouse, an award-winning restaurant for years—and for good reason.

“We have remained relatively consistent throughout the years in terms of our culinary approach,” executive chef Dustin Sinclair says in an inter-

view with Las Vegas Magazine. The company’s priorities, he says, include the highest-quality ingredients, value and plenty of charm. “We follow the philosophy of ‘Prep hard, pick up easy,’ meaning our kitchen sta puts in the e ort to meticulously prepare their mise en place, enabling us to deliver exceptional dishes beyond a typical tasting menu.”

It’s a classically styled room with dark woods and elegant furnishings. You can have a signature cocktail created by Michael Thompson at the spacious bar before your meal, and the choice here will fit any palate. Bourbon fans will want to try two spectacular sips: the La Cosa Nostra, which features Bu alo Trace, an amaretto float and orange zest, all

topped with a fi lthy cherry and a large cube of ice featuring the steakhouse’s logo; and Eat a Peach, where the bourbon is blended with lemon, peach-and-amaretto jam, agave and egg white.

For something a bit lighter, try the Vegas Dream, served in a martini glass lined with a pomegranate sugar rim and featuring Tito’s vodka, pas-

The minute you sit down, you’re in for a special experience. The level of service here is first-class; you’ll never wonder where your server went. And general manager Richard Douglas says that’s not an accident: “Our dedicated and experienced staff is undeniably the driving force behind our success. We have a collection of front and back of the house employees that have worked at this property for extended years. With this, a deep sense of pride and ownership has emerged within our establishment. Without their tireless efforts and wholehearted commitment, we could never have accomplished what we have. Our staff’s passion resonates with guests, leaving an unforgettable impression on everyone who walks through the doors.”

Wagyu strip, king crab Oscar style Vegas Dream

As you enjoy your starter, a Gruyère-infused popover served with creamy butter, you’ll enjoy making your selections from a menu stacked with delicious options.

For a light yet sensational starter, try the melon and prosciutto salad, made with feta, basil, pistachio brittle and prosciutto crisp, with melon sliced and compressed into tiny cylinders. For a more savory treat, the wagyu beef tartare absolutely pops with flavor, thanks to a mélange of

kaluga caviar, truffle aioli and a quail egg. The beef fat toast it’s served with is so light, exercise a bit of caution when spreading the tartare (it breaks so easily!).

Given the name of the restaurant, who could blame you for wanting a steak as your main? And the selections here all deliver, from a massive tomahawk and wagyu strip (we heartily recommend

702.732.5277

ordering this king crab Oscar style, with the rich sauce putting this over the top) to the filet mignon (there’s nothing better than ordering this Rossini-style, the delicate texture of the meat pairing perfectly with Madeira wine sauce and foie gras).

Sinclair says the Rossini-style filet is his favorite dish on the menu. “(It) truly stands out due to its exceptional ingredients,” he says. “Instead of using a conventional Madeira for cooking, we opted for a 10-year-old Madeira made from the sercial grape. All the components harmonize flawlessly to produce an extraordinary dish.”

If you want seafood, try the panseared Dover scallops (one of the best versions of this delicacy you’ll ever try), served with a curried split pea purée, sugar snap peas, sweet pepper and a tapioca crisp.

Sides here are as classic as the restaurant itself, from grilled asparagus topped with bearnaise sauce and charred lemon to a salt-baked potato loaded with Neuske’s bacon, white cheddar, sour cream and chives. Desserts here are the perfect ending to a perfect meal. The warm chocolate lava cake is decadent with vanilla ice cream, a raspberry coulis and fresh berries, while the Tahitian vanilla crème brulée will have all eyes darting toward your table, as it’s brought fully afire. Wait until the flames subside and enjoy!

What drives a person to become a professional ventriloquist? To understand superstar voice thrower Jeff Dunham, it helps to know his habits, his tastes and his consumer choices. He owns a 1988 Yugo, for example. The make is considered one of the worst cars ever produced, but Dunham recognizes its value both to auto history and his collection. He’s not about to let car culture fully cancel the Yugoslavia’s “good value” export.

Dunham has never been one to alter his point of view in acquiescence to cultural currents. The title of his Still Not Canceled Tour is a nod to his commitment to sticking to his guns. If anyone is offended that he speaks through a cast of characters that includes an anthropomorphic jalapeño, a deceased foreign national and President Biden, he can cope. Words may come out of their mouths that draw criticism or public ire, but Dunham is fully supportive of his inner circle. His main commitment is to the fan base he’s built over decades that has enabled him to become one of the most successful contemporary touring comedians. His most recent

payback is Comedy Central special Me the People, which had its broadcast debut a month before the December launch of his North American tour leg.

To be clear, it’s not actually Dunham speaking through an effigy of the POTUS. It’s his right-hand man Walter, who already had a resemblance to the 46th president and reluctantly takes on the role. Walter previously worked up an impression of the 45th president, and at one point played both politicians simultaneously in a debate. He may be a curmudgeon, but when he commits, it’s difficult to discern mannequin from man.

It’s Dunham who gets the fame, the fortune, the star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame. Dunham gets credit for breaking records for ticket sales, which made him financially comfortable enough to invest in a Yugo. He’s been consistent, but he hasn’t oversaturated himself. He has political beliefs that inform his comedy, but he’s not hostile or transgressive.

Walter may seem hostile at times, but he’s just cranky from international travel. Endearing Peanut enjoys seeing the world on tour and brings a

softer energy to the stage. Bubba J, a survivor of tornado-prone trailer parks, brings a NASCAR vibe. And what more can be said about José Jalapeño on a Stick and Achmed the Dead Terrorist that their names don’t imply?

Dunham weathered allegations of political incorrectness early in his career, long before the rise of cancel culture. By the time social media democratized criticism, he had built an audience to whom his characters had become familiar faces and somewhat iconic. Dunham’s easygoing manner and congenial personality offset the occasional incendiary sentences that come out of Achmed’s mouth or insensitive remarks by Walter that could offend the easily offendable.

He must have learned where to draw the line at some point, and when to let his handheld buddies cross it.

Have a hoot with Tom Segura at his upcoming shows

One of comedy’s top-selling artists comes to Las Vegas this week. Known for his über-funny ventures in standup, podcasting, acting and writing, Tom Segura chatted with Las Vegas Magazine ’s Em Jurbala ahead of his upcoming performances.

Where’s your head at right now?

Well, I just had a little break. The tour ended and then the (Netfl ix) special came out, then I took some time with the family. I’m back home doing podcasts, getting onstage again, working out new material. The fun part of building a new hour is that stage where you’re really excited about new stu ; when you’ve let the old stu go. I have a bunch of things cooking … It’s a good time right now.

Is it sometimes hard to let go of jokes that you really love?

No, I always have the same kind of routine where I look at a special coming out as like a fi nale of the material.

I just always accept it. Sometimes you get kind of anxiety about, “Oh no, I have to do a new hour,” and you start to feel that before you’re working on it. But the funny thing is, once you‘re doing it, it switches from anxiety to excitement. New stu is always the most exciting thing.

From stand-up to podcasts to your book, you always end up in a storyteller role. Is that a role you’ve always seen yourself in?

I kind of have. Even when I was in high school, I had a teacher who would let me tell stories when I was late. I was always late for this one class after lunch and he’d be like, “OK, let’s hear it, why are you late?” and I’d make stu up that had kernels of truth in it and he would laugh. I love when something happens and you go back and tell people what happened. And I think I’ve always tried to make that entertaining.

Was podcasting a logical next step in that storytelling career?

You would think so, except I didn’t really want to do podcasting. My reluctance to do it was that I didn’t see myself as the guy who would be

open and vulnerable about their life. I liked keeping the this-is-a-performance thing going. … I like talking about my day, but I don’t want to confess everything that I feel, and that’s what I thought podcasting was. I kind of reluctantly got into it, but I also realized you could make it what you wanted. So we created this

36 | 8.27.23 Las Vegas Magazine

multimedia show that allows us to do that, to say what’s really going on, but to do a lot of bits, go for jokes, play videos that make us laugh, that kind of thing. That I embraced.

You’ve played a bunch of venues here in town.

Oh, I’ve been going to Vegas for more than a decade, yeah.

Do you have any that are particularly memorable?

What used to be called (The Terry Fator Theater) at The Mirage. That is a great room. That

might be the best room for the art of stand-up comedy … It’s not too big and not too small, but it plays like a big club. … I’ve done shows at MGM Grand Garden Arena, I’ve done the KÀ (Theater), I’ve done the Chelsea (at The Cosmopolitan), that I’m going back to. They all provide something di erent and fun, but I think doing stand-up in Vegas is always a fun thing because you truly are getting a whole new audience every time.

Do you have any places you must visit in Vegas?

8 p.m. Aug. 31-Sept. 2, starting at $68 plus tax and fee. ticketmaster.com

I’m always going to try to go to Bazaar Meat (by José Andrés at Sahara Las Vegas). That’s a great one. There’s one at Aria, Carbone, and there’s also (Joël) Robuchon, the French place (at MGM Grand). Those are my three go-tos, and I’ll also try to fi nd out the best pastry place every time I go there.
