Brunch at Giada makes a perfect weekend retreat
Whether it’s the start or the end to your week, brunch at Giada is sure to be a high point in your Vegas trip. The restaurant, which opened in 2014, remains as vibrant as the day it opened, with a California-inspired décor and Italian menu.
That California-inspired, elegant patio feel is completely natural, given the food star’s background growing up in Southern California. It also reflects her family
through movie posters hung throughout the restaurant (the late director Dino De Laurentiis was her grandfather). Request a window seat, and you can catch the Strip coming to life.

lightful. A Giada classic, the G, combines Macchu Pisco, pineapple juice, apricot preserves and Angostura bitters. You’ll find plenty of shareable starters here, from orzo meatballs to Giada’s fresh pastry assortment—a rosemary-Parmesan scone, chocolate croissant, gluten-free blueberry muffin and strawberry cheesecake Danish. This is one of my favorites, perfect with a good strong cup of coffee. It changes periodically, but every incarnation I’ve had almost
makes the rest of brunch unnecessary. Almost. However, a salumi and formaggi board, with pecorino Toscano, prosciutto di Parma, buffalo mozzarella and sweet soppressata along with wild honey and fruit, will tempt you. Various seafood options are available, including the smoked salmon carpaccio. This pretty dish, consisting of thinly sliced salmon accented by balsamic pearls, shaved vegetables and a caper-lemon vinaigrette, perks up your taste buds.
For entrées, choose from breakfast items like Giada’s sunrise polenta waffle, a menu staple for many years, or the lobster hash, with the perfectly cooked seafood mixed with potatoes, bacon, piquillo peppers, tomato and onion confit. Two sunny sideup eggs add more happiness to the plate.
The salmon Benedict consists of beautifully layered wilted spinach, piquillo peppers and poached eggs with a bright Hollandaise poured atop. Hazelnut choc-
olate chip pancakes come with Nutella, strawberries and honey mascarpone , for a sweeter dish. As befits an Italian restaurant, there are pasta dishes like spaghetti with pomodoro and fettuccini with seafood. The cavatelli, with mushrooms, zucchini and peas, is a verdant green, thanks to the basil pesto that liberally covers the pasta.
More lunch-focused items include the grilled cheese, a delicious concoction with lemon pesto and heirloom tomatoes. Add avocado for more heft. Giada’s Burger layers a beef and pancetta patty with avocado-basil cream and provolone. You can ask for an egg, too, and I suggest you do so. And arugula and romaine salads make delicious options for the health conscious.
Dessert? Well, a cookie or two wouldn’t come amiss— the chocolate chunk version pairs nicely with that big cuppa you ordered earlier, and the signature lemon-ricotta cookies are divine. But ending with an espresso martini is also perfectly acceptable.

A new album and massive tour put Jonas Brothers back on top
It’s a good year to be a Jonas brother. Nick, Kevin and Joe dropped by Hollywood in January to receive their star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, where Nick announced that their next album, The Album, would be released in May. They
played a five-date engagement on Broadway in March, with each performance dedicated to one of their catalog LPs. Then in May, a week after the May 12 release of The Album, they announced a tour titled, appropriately enough, The Tour

In an extension of their Broadway concept, the JoBros planned to incorporate every track from every album they’ve released since 2007. This manifested as a Nick-curated 67-song setlist by the time the tour kicked off with two concerts
at Yankee Stadium last month. Some of the cuts were condensed into medleys, or “mosaics,” as the brothers refer to them, with newer songs such as “Waffle House,” “Do It Like That” and “Wings” interspersed throughout.
It was an audacious undertaking, but they pulled it off. Jimmy Fallon appeared at the first show to lead the crowd in a karaoke version of The Killers’ “Mr. Brightside” before the Brothers kicked off their set with “Celebrate!” from The Album and 2020 single “What a Man Gotta Do” before bringing it all back home to their Jonas Brothers album with “S.O.S.”
That song peaked at No. 17 on Billboard ’s singles chart, while Jonas Brothers reached No. 5. They’d top the Billboard 200 the following year with A Little Bit Longer and reached No. 1 again with 2009’s Lines, Vines and Trying Times and 2019 reunion album Happiness Begins, which would yield their lone No. 1 single, “Sucker.”
As with the current concert concepts of Taylor Swift and Beyoncé, The Tour is thematically retrospective. It’s a momentous look back before the next phase, or a final split. Jonas Brothers took a six-year break before releasing Happiness Begins, which was accompanied by an Amazon documentary and a marathon series of concerts. This time, after a second round of dates was announced, Jonas Brothers would play nearly 100 dates in total, including their first performances in Australia.
Finally, the Jonas Brothers will play their 2007 song “Australia” for Australians in Australia. They also have an extended band that can handle songs from The Album, which explores ’70s and ’80s pop territory. There are hints of Hall & Oates, Michael McDonald and Stevie Wonder blended with contemporary vocal stylings and positive energy that Jonas Brothers music tends to be imbued with.
The Yankee Stadium shows established that the Jonas Brothers could indeed recall every note of every song they’ve released in the past 16 years, and that their popularity endures. A book titled Blood written by rock biographer Neil Strauss was set for a Sept. 15 publication date as The Tour began. Whether The Tour and The Album will inform the final chapter in the Jonas Brothers’ story remains to be seen, but it’s very possible that they are heading for the end of the road.

Paradox Museum is a fun mind-and-body adventure for the whole family
rick your mind, treat your body. Just like the name of the attraction, everything inside is logically unacceptable, making the Paradox Museum logically a good time. I mean, who doesn’t want to lose their mind occasionally, or dive into an illusion they can’t explain?
With more than 70 different exhibits throughout the huge space, guests take a self-guided adventure through the world of science, art and human perception.
“It’s the most interactive, mind-bending museum that’ll you’ll ever experience,” says Billy Piero, Paradox Museum sales and marketing manager. “The exhibits range from over-the-top, completely immersive to brain teasers...”

Different rooms house different experiences, and some are set up for tricky camera work (there are instructions beside each exhibit on how to capture the image for maximum unbelievability). Produce pictures that make it appear you’re playing poker with your clones, sit on a sofa where your legs are separated from the top of your body, stand beside a mirror that makes it appear like you’re levitating, dine at a table where your head is the entrée, or enter the room with a friend where they’re the giant and you’re the pint-size human. (Note: Capturing many of these images requires you have a buddy helping you control the camera.)
Love that uncomfortable feeling? No problem! Trip out both mind and body
inside the mirror maze, you won’t know which direction to walk. Try and stand inside the Paradox tunnel, which promises to disrupt your perception of gravity and direction. Inside the tilted room, try and stand up straight without the feeling of wanting to fall over. And see if you can keep your knees from knocking in fear as you stand atop the infinity well, a strong depth illusion that makes it seem as if you’re going to fall down a deep well—but it’s only 40 centimeters deep.
The Paradox Museum brand has nearly a dozen locations around the globe, but since this one is on the Las Vegas Strip, of course there is a room that’s been Vegas-ized. Here, you can create an optical illusion of spinning on stripper poles upside down (while your partner watches you from a seat), or test your cognitive skills on the interactive slot machines.
A signature experience throughout many of the museum’s locations is the Paradox carousel, and for good reason. This one you can stare at till you go cross-eyed as you try and figure out how the one carousel turns into three different carousels as it slowly spins and changes appearances.
When you gather your bearings after the approximate hourlong adventure, make sure to stop by the Paradox retail shop. Here you’ll find awesome branded accessories, clothing and souvenirs, as well as a great selection of brain-teaser games, 3D puzzles and trippy tchotchkes.
From the grand-scale exhibits to the smaller, more educational and scientific, Paradox Museum begs guests to not only open their minds, but bend and lose it to a series of treats and tricks that are all-out fun and exciting.

The Revivalists, together with Band of Horses, stretch to create new musical flavors
Were it not for a chance encounter in their adopted home of New Orleans that is the first plot point in their band-bio lore, The Revivalists would not currently be touring with Band of Horses. Both acts are fronted by charismatic singers in David Shaw and Ben
Bridwell, respectively, but while Band of Horses is primarily Bridwell’s show with several longtime members, The Revivalists’ songwriting core of Shaw and guitarist Zack Feinberg created a friendly jam band mafia in which musicians join but never leave.

Anyone in the eight-member lineup is free to go their own way, of course, with Shaw already having released solo work. The freedom of expression explored on The Revivalists’ latest album, Pour It Out Into the Night, is demonstrative of the chemistry that makes their music irresistible, a chemistry established in 2007 when Feinberg deviated from his regular bicycle commute and pedaled by a
porch where Shaw was singing and playing acoustic guitar. That freedom is manifested in set lists that can change from night to night. “It’s important to me to stay inspired, and if we’re doing the same show every night that’s less exciting to us, I think,” Feinberg told Las Vegas Magazine. “People travel to see us, multiple dates on a tour, and I feel they deserve to hear different songs. We stand behind our whole catalog, so we want people to catch a song that’s meaningful to them.”
August concerts found The Revivalists opening sets with material from the new album such as hard-edged “The Long Con” and uplifting anthem “Good Old Days,” as well as “All My Friends” from 2018’s Take Good Care It’s entirely possible they could break out a cover of the Bee Gees’ “To Love Somebody,” which they recorded for 2020 album Made in Muscle Shoals While The Revivalists are part of the jam band community, recently appearing on the July/August cover of post-Deadhead culture magazine Relix, their music resists categorization. PJ Howard can sound like Bruce Springsteen fronting Tom Petty’s Heartbreakers as produced by Steve Albini (“Don’t Look Back”) or The Killers’ Brandon Flowers backed by Phil Collins on drums (“Only You”).
Feinberg welcomes the comparisons, citing the galaxy of influences that inform Pour It Out. One highlight is Feinberg-penned “Down In the Dirt,” which Shaw imbued with an earthy vocal reminiscent of Townes Van Zandt that might have brought the late singer-songwriter to tears.
It sounds so unlike Shaw that listeners thought it was Feinberg: “It has been a question I’ve seen on comment threads,” said Feinberg. “People have been asking that are longtime fans: ‘Is this you singing, Zack?’”
Fortunately, Shaw is in a band in which each member is conscious of giving each other space to breathe musically and where his voice can fully flower. The Revivalists stretch beyond the boundaries of jam band aesthetics, but have firm footing in the rich musical heritage of Crescent City that they’ll be building upon well into the future.

It’s hard to remember a time when Penn Jillette and Teller weren’t inextricably linked to Las Vegas; they’re celebrating 30 years here this year, most of it at their current property. All told, Penn & Teller have been at it for nearly 50 years total, and a big part of their success is that they’ve never rested on laurels; never phoned it in (more on that later). And a recent show illustrated just how committed they are to that philosophy.
As Jillette said at the outset, it doesn’t matter if the last show you attended was last year, last month or last week—you’re going to see something different.
Not that they haven’t kept in some quintessential moments over the years— first and foremost the show’s intro, in which pianist Mike Jones plays smooth, relaxing jazz while Jillette plays bass (he departs shortly before showtime, with Jones joking to the audience that his bass player apparently has another job somewhere).
But otherwise, Penn & Teller constantly keep their audiences guessing at what’s going to come next.
At that show, they placed a large jar of jelly beans onstage (this one was new to me!), asking audience members by way of large signs to guess how many it contained before the show started. The “winner” of this contest got the jar—and the privilege of doling out a few jelly beans to every single audience volunteer as they went back to their seat. It set a fun tone that kept everyone laughing throughout the night.
The changes continued (at least from my perspective). Yes, these magic men are always tweaking their show, always keeping audiences on their toes, always looking for that needle in a haystack (more on that one later as well).
If you attended this performance, you got to see:
• Egg bag, which is exactly what it sounds like, and about as basic as an illusion can be, although in the hands of Penn & Teller, the sleight-of-hand is mind-blowing. They make everything seem effortless, even though it’s the exact opposite;
• A routine involving a large drill and saw, a block of wood and a very nervous audience volunteer, for whom the duo create a magic trick. They then demonstrate to her how it works, and obtain her promise that she’ll perform it for others once she leaves the theater. (A show that gives you homework? Only in Vegas.)
• A trick with instructions in Spanish, leading to hilarious manifestations onstage that are not part of the act.
• And, as referenced earlier, Penn & Teller take on both the notion of “phoning it in” (with Jillette onstage as a suit hanging on a rack and a monitor above it with his face) and “a needle in a haystack” (where you’ll learn more about different types of needles than you ever cared to). Because there’s no notion that Penn & Teller are timid to attack. The stage is like a laboratory—which would make them mad scientists, and us their more-than-willing test subjects.
