What a Week!

I do say this a lot, but it’s especially true now: Whomever you are reading this magazine, you picked the absolutely perfect week to visit! There’s so much excitement on tap up and down the Las Vegas Strip, and we’ve detailed most of it in the following pages. You might have a bit of a challenge figuring out which ones to attend, but rest assured: There are no wrong choices here.

Carrie Underwood, who’s been packing houses at Resorts World Las Vegas with her Reflection: The Las Vegas Residency, is back to remind audiences why she’s one of the best-selling country artists of all time (“Good Reputation,” p. 32).

Over at T-Mobile Arena, champions Saul “Canelo” Álvarez and Jermell Charlo will fight in a super middleweight bout for the ages—the fi rst in boxing’s four belt era, which began in 2004, in which two undisputed champions have squared o (“Historic Showdown,” p. 40).

A new era of Las Vegas entertainment begins this week, with the unveiling of Sphere and the fi rst band to perform there—U2, which launches its UV Achtung Baby Live residency (“Beautiful Day,” p. 36 ).

Over at The STRAT, retiring R&B legend Morris Day brings The Time for a two-day engagement that is sure to bring back fond memories for generations of fans (“Last Call,” p. 14).

Lady Gaga, who over the last few years has established herself as a Vegas force to be reckoned with, brings her intimate Jazz & Piano show back to Dolby Live at Park MGM (“Platinum Performance,” p. 21).

And with football season in full swing, we’ve collected some of the best places to enjoy gridiron action and great beer and food specials (“9 Great Places to Watch Football,” p. 38).

Overwhelming? A bit, but this is Vegas!

Heartfelt Expression

Hear your favorite tunes and touching stories with this Las Vegas icon

The last time I went to see Wayne Newton in his show, Up Close and Personal, he told a story that broke my heart, but shows a side of the entertainment industry that most of us never take the time to think about:

When Newton was 23 years old, he made an appearance on television’s The Lucy Show. His appearance made such a splash that the networks executives approached Newton about starring in his own show. He was thrilled, but Lucille Ball asked him to see her before accepting the offer.

Owing a great debt to Ball for putting him on her show, Newton valued her opinion and advice. And her advice came in the form of a question: “Have you ever heard Jim Nabors sing?” Newton, who, like Nabors, had a beautiful singing voice but a bit of a high-pitched speaking voice, said he loved Jim Nabors’ singing voice. Ball’s followup question: “What is Jim Nabors mostly known for?” And the answer came back: Gomer Pyle, the stumbling, bumbling comedy character that he played on television.

The message was clear to Newton: He could either be known for his voice (and massive talent on almost every instrument known to man) or for whatever character television came up for him. It wasn’t even a choice. And, as millions of his fans who have lined up to see him perform will attest, he made the right one.

Up Close and Personal is filled with such stories, and Newton rarely tells the same ones twice. That’s right—he’s got so many stories he could keep this show going for years, and no two would be the same. In fact, he just extended his residency through 2024. He’s also occasionally joined by surprise guest stars.

So, to Mr. Las Vegas, who never turned his back on his fans, we say: Danke Schoen. –Ken Miller

Last Call

Retiring R&B legend brings his unmistakable sound and moves to a pair of unforgettable Strip performances

Mention Morris Day and The Time to people who came of age as the mid-’80s set in and a trigger is pulled that releases memories of pop-funk fun, dapper attire, arm-flapping dance moves and a singer with a sense of humor fronting a band of tight-but-loose Minnesota musicians that eclipsed the vision of the Svengali sonic architect who cast them in Purple Rain. Day arrives in Vegas for a weekend of shows with drummer Jellybean Johnson and keyboardist Monte Moir from The Time’s original lineup.

The STRAT could become The Time’s new performance home now that Day has announced he’s retired from touring and recording. In November, Day released his final album, Last Call, featuring guest appearances from Snoop Dogg, Tech N9ne, Big Daddy Kane and Billy Gibbons. While Day has clashed with the estate of the late Prince regarding use of the name The Time, those issues appear to have been resolved, and Day has been able to perform hits “The Bird” and “Jungle Love” as of late without legal interference.

Things may had turned out differently if Prince were still with us. He formed The Time out of the nucleus

of existing band Flyte Time, whose members included Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis and Jesse Johnson. Day was a high school friend and former bandmate of Prince’s who was soon accompanied by Lewis’ brother Jerome Benton as a comic foil.

The Time made danceable, good-time funk with Top 40 appeal and a lightheartedness that didn’t fit Prince’s increasingly enigmatic persona. Appearing in 1984’s Purple Rain made The Time immortal on film, with Day channeling Little Richard’s flamboyance in contrast with Prince’s James Brown authoritarianism. The two acts parted ways and The Time disintegrated.

That was good for Janet Jackson, who became a superstar thanks to Jam and Lewis bringing their production skills to her camp. Day had a hit solo album with 1990’s Color of Success and would subsequently perform with the founding lineup of The Time as The Original 7ven. Now he’s writing the last chapter in the band’s history, with Las Vegas as the setting where the fans can come one more Time.

Star Sighting

With this being Hispanic Heritage Month, you may want to refresh your knowledge of one of the most influential singers today—Puerto Rican singer Bad Bunny, pictured. He has had a tremendous impact on the music industry in a very short time, and just in case you need proof of that, head to Madame Tussauds Las Vegas, where one of his wax figures is displayed. (He has others in New York and Orlando, Fla.)

Known almost as much for his songs as for the way he presents himself (in both his wardrobe and social stances), Bad Bunny’s most recent wax figure,

in which he’s posed in front of a purple semi, was inspired not only by the album cover for El Último Tour Del Mundo, but by his outfit, hair and jewelry from the 2021 American Music Awards.

The figure was unveiled a few months ago to coincide with the Latin Music Awards, where he won awards for Album of the Year and Best Album— Urban for Un Verano Sin Ti and Best Song—Urban for “Tití Me Preguntó.”

Gabriel Hewitt, general manager for Madame Tussauds Las Vegas, said the most recent figure was not only to celebrate the nominations, but to congratu-

late and honor Bad Bunny for being the first Latin artist to headline Coachella. “He’s having such an incredible year, and we’re excited to be a part of his success by revealing his third figure.”

Go grab a selfie with the man whose songs like “La Cancion,” “Dime Si Te Acuerdas” and “Mía” helped bring reggaeton and trap music to a wider audience. Then share it on Instagram to make your friends jealous. –

Home Away From Home

Delve into comforting dishes with great flavors

When you pay a visit to the Bedford by Martha Stewart at Paris, you’ve got to get the house-made bread basket. It’s inarguable. And if you don’t, when the collection of irresistible garden flatbreads, sour cherry-rosemary focaccia and Parker House rolls arrives at the table next to you, regrets will be had.

Elsewhere, come prepared to have a hard time choosing as alluring appetizers, enticing entrées and delectable desserts abound here. Not to mention, the farmhouse-inspired setting is welcoming and warm, making you feel right at home as you dine.

Along with that bread basket you definitely ordered, consider indulging in Big Martha’s Pierogies, a must-have Stewart family staple filled with delightfully fluffy potatoes and topped with brown butter. Oysters Rockefeller, baked with Pernod cream, provide another hearty starter, while crisp salads like the red endive salad with Gorgonzola dolce, toasted pecans and sherryshallot vinaigrette offer a refreshing first course.

Stewart’s love for French cooking really shines when it comes to mains. Both the classic roast chicken stuffed with herbed breadcrumbs and the couscous royale, with lamb chop, lamb rissole, chicken thigh and harissa vegetables, feature elevated flavors and premium proteins. Beef lovers can choose between the 10-ounce prime filet and the 16-ounce prime New York strip steak, which can be enjoyed with bordelaise or bearnaise sauce.

Round out your meal with sides like grilled jumbo asparagus with hollandaise and creamed spinach, or Martha’s Smashed Baked Potato, which is smashed tableside with crème fraîche, chives and bacon lardons.

Naturally, the only acceptable way to finish a meal this good is with a dessert. The “Mile High” chocolate cake, a devil’s food cake with milk chocolate frosting and fresh whipped cream, is sure to satisfy the most insatiable sweet tooth, but the real star of the confectionary offerings is the upside-down lemon meringue pie with perfectly tart lemon curd and baked meringue. –Em Jurbala

Friends and Foes

If you want to connect with your group, and you love video or role-playing games, one of the newest virtual reality offerings on the Strip is sure to be a hit with family and friends. Sandbox VR in Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood Resort offers short adventures, like Seekers of the Shard: Dragonfire

For Seekers of the Shard: Dragonfire, suit up in haptic vest and strap trackers to wrist and ankle. Choose attributes for the character you are playing, while a room moderator provides a VR head-

set and weapon (like swords and crossbows). (A caveat: Do put your trackers on the correct legs, or you might find your avatar’s posture suggests you need to use the facilities. Humorous, but a little embarrassing, too.)

Once the alternate world appears, you battle trolls, goblins, skeletons and more as you attempt to liberate a jewel from its scaly captor. And it’s surprisingly realistic, with a rich, 360-degree video backdrop and foes landing blows you can feel. If you die, you can come

back to life, but only with the help of your friends. So, hopefully they are good friends.

Once your adventure ends, you can compare how well you did, and who killed the most evil creatures. The game features two possible journeys, so you can follow up with a second game and explore another path. –Nina

Platinum Performance

Superstar returns to her successful, stylish Las Vegas Strip residency

When Lady Gaga returned to her Jazz & Piano residency 15 months after her last performance at Dolby Live, there was one soul that could not be present in person: the late Tony Bennett, who passed away in July at age 96 after having recorded two albums with Gaga in a late-career highlight fit for a legend. Gaga paid tribute with a cover of “Fly Me to the Moon,” for which she momentarily went unplugged and let the power of her natural voice reach the rafters.

Gaga was picture perfect at the start of the show, with platinum hair complemented by makeup undoubtedly drawn from her Haus Labs line, which is making viral waves with latest product Triclone Skin Tech Concealer. The Oscar-winning, Grammy-collecting singer’s beauty products are imbued with a self-love/self-care attitude, as was a rendition of “Born This Way” dedicated to the trans community.

She also introduced a new arrangement of “Stupid Love,” bathed in pink light as she sat at the keyboard, from 2020 album Chromatica. The tour in support of that album ran through last September, making it nearly a year since she had performed live at all. Whether or not she returns for more Jazz & Piano after the final date of her current engagement remains to be seen, but she’ll likely be heard next contributing vocals to the next Rolling Stones album. –Matt

Continuous Charm

Long-running bar and lounge at Bellagio still wows guests

It’s rare in Las Vegas that any bar or lounge sticks around for a long time; it’s even more rare if the location is on the Vegas Strip. Petrossian Bar at Bellagio beats the odds and is a testament to good service, cocktails and ambience as it celebrates its 25th year in business.

The longtime favorite of locals and visitors alike continues its reign as an ideal spot for afternoon high tea, early or late-night cocktails and live piano music. And if you haven’t been yet, we’re here to remind you

why you should pay Petrossian Bar a visit.

Let’s start with the afternoon high tea service—one of the only offered on the Strip. Service runs Friday through Sunday from 1-4 p.m.; reservations are highly recommended. Order a tower of finger sandwiches and freshly made pastries and dessert goodies as well as various teas and specialty cocktails.

Libations at Petrossian have long been hailed as some of the best in the city from both visitors and

Tips/Insider Knowledge

Petrossian Bar offers plenty of seating options. For great people watching, hang on the “patio” where the pianists play.

industry folk, being mixed by bartenders that have been with the bar for many years. We suggest starting off with the Lavender Basil Lemon Drop, a slight twist on the classic cocktail with Belvedere Organic Infusions lemon and basil vodka, St-Germain elderflower liqueur and dashes of lavender essence with a basil and sugar rim that puts each sip over the top in deliciousness. Keep it classic again with a slight twist with the Peach Bellini, a mix of sparkling wine, peach purée and crème de peche.

Petrossian Bar also does a fabulous job when it comes to experiential, visually stunning cocktails like The Bellagio Martini. This cocktail is brought to your table on a giant ice block with the martini, mixed with Grey Goose vodka, dry vermouth and dash of lemon essence, served in a stemless glass. A side treat comes with the cocktail—a cigar-shaped cone of caviar. “It has that wow factor,” says Eric Szamiel, general manager of Petrossian Bar. “It’s a nice, unique presentation.”

Speaking of caviar, Petrossian Bar is also a hot spot for the salty oce-

anic treat. Caviar service has been a longtime staple and destination of Petrossian Bar. Choose from three top purveyors like Imperial Ossetra, Royal Daurenki and Baika Classic, or order the Petrossian Caviar Trio—30 grams of all three caviars plus two glasses of Veuve Clicquot or a vodka flight. Caviar bites also come in fun forms like the caviar donut, caviar taco and caviar egg.

“Petrossian is elegant and it’s upscale,” says Szamiel. “It’s cocktails, afternoon high tea and caviar. It’s great service with great offerings. It’s a great room. We have tenured staff. We have longtime piano performers. Petrossian Bar is iconic. It’s a staple to not only the Bellagio but the city.” –Kiko

Helping guests have a soaring experience

When we met with Benson Joseph for this story at The Linq Promenade, it was crawling with conventioneers in town for DEF CON (a convention for hackers). Joseph was excited about the convention, as he is currently attending college to study cybersecurity.

“I want to be a hacker, but ethical hacking, to protect companies,” he says. “I want a career in cybersecurity, and set up systems and infrastructures for companies. I graduate from CSN (College of Southern Nevada) in a year and a half.”

Until then, Joseph secures Vegas visitors—into harnesses as the operations manager for the FLY LINQ Zipline attraction at The Linq Promenade. He’s been with FLY LINQ since it opened four years ago, and before that he spent four years at Vegas’ downtown zipline ride, SlotZilla. To date, he’s ziplined more than a thousand times, and he’s fully schooled in the art.

“I wouldn’t say I’m afraid of heights,” Joseph says. “I say I respect heights. I wouldn’t go to the edge without being tethered into a harness. I was nervous

“F LY LINQ’s harnesses are super-duper comfortable,” Joseph says. “It’s like sitting in a hammock. in the beginning, but after a while it just feels like a form of transportation.”

As the manager, Joseph oversees staff and all of the equipment and safety procedures, and you can find him talking guests off the 120-foot ledge (literally!).

“I love meeting all the different people that ride FLY LINQ,” he says. “No matter where you’re from, fear is the same. No matter what language is spoken, I know when someone is scared, and I’m there to reassure them before sending them off.” –

Relax for a spell at Brera Osteria, where a pleasant patio setting in St. Mark’s Square in The Venetian means you’ll want to spend a little extra time hanging out.

If you happen to stop by late afternoon, take advantage of Aperitivo Hour (3-5 p.m.). First, please order a cocktail—not only are there delicious choices like the classic Aperol spritz and the intriguing Watermelon Wonder, with watermelon kombucha, Olmeca Altos plata tequila and apple cider, but also beer and wine.

Plus, snacks and small bites like marinated olives, charred cauliflower, and meatballs join pizzas like the Vince, with mozzarella, mortadella, burrata,

pistachio and orange zest (the citrus adds a surprisingly perfect accent to the pie) and the margherita, with San Marzano tomatoes, fior di latte and oregano. They are perfect to lead into the meal.

And don’t let that little nibble deter you from ordering the squash blossoms to kick off your dinner. This tempura-fried appetizer is filled with three cheeses, while a Calabrian aioli adds a bit of heat. Continue with a salad and another cocktail like the delightful Rosa, a seasonal concoction with Octavio tequila and prickly pear, plus candied pineapple and a gold lollipop. The chop salad brings Castelfranco greens, romaine, kale, chickpeas,

ricotta salata, salami and red wine vinaigrette together—ask to hold the salami if you are a vegetarian; the flavor is still perfect. You’ll find quite a few wine varieties here, not to mention a willing staff to help guide you to the perfect one.

For your next course, I recommend indulging in the gnocchi. These potato dumplings come out an incredibly vibrant green, due to the arugula pesto, and with Reggiano cream and burrata, the flavor’s hard to beat. Cacio

e pepe is also a simple, delicious option with housemade pasta, pecorino and Reggiano cheeses—and black pepper, of course. Pappardelle is a lush dish with hand-cut egg pasta, braised wild boar sugo and Australian black winter truffle. The tortelli is veal-filled with mushrooms and sage butter. For vegans, the Vegana includes garganelli pasta, cauliflower, tomatoes and basil. The meat course includes a 14-ounce New York strip with roast potatoes, braised pork shank with

Parmesan risotto, lamb chops with fregola and artichoke and roast chicken with Tuscan kale. Seafood choices include branzino and salmon, plus sea scallops with red kuri squash purée and crispy pancetta. And although it’s listed as a side, eggplant parmigiana is delicious even as a main course.

Having dessert and after-dinner drinks isn’t mandatory, but they do put an even happier ending on your night. Gelato or sorbet may be just the ticket to end your meal, as it is for me—choose from vanilla, pistachio, caramel or chocolate. Cap it off with a digestif, such as Lazzaroni amaretto, Galliano liqueur, Lazzaroni sambuca and Luxardo limoncello.

The heart creates the drumbeat of our lives—and the circulatory system accounts for nearly 100,000 miles of arteries, capillaries, and veins that run throughout our body. This gallery allows you to learn about the circulatory system through glowing, 3-dimensional displays in a darkened room.

THE INTRODUCTION

Upon entering the exhibit, there is a simple, pinewood coffin and the first fullbody specimen in the experience, which includes a look at the skeletal system and soft tissue.

The digestive system turns the food we eat into the essential nutrients and fuel we need to survive. Not only does this part of the experience explore how our bodies break down food and liquids, but also dives into our evolution as hunters and gatherers.

MOVE

Action! The human muscular system is the complex machine that allows us to move through our daily lives and explore the world we live in. This gallery presents bodies in different active poses that illustrate what our muscles are doing as we move our bodies.

REPAIR

Healing is something our bodies often intrinsically know how to do, and this gallery explores healing, disease, modern medicine, quality of life, and more.

THINK

When it comes to the brain, scientists and researchers know so much, and yet there are still so many questions left unanswered. With whole brains and spinal cords on display, this gallery demonstrates the connectedness of the nervous system and the incredible organ of the brain.

BEGINNINGS

The first stages of life are on display in a quiet, thoughtful setting, allowing visitors to view embryonic and fetal displays for a better understanding of how human life begins.

LOVE

Love is both a physical and emotional endeavor, and for humans, certain elements of biological attraction is believed to be hardwired. This includes what we find attractive, both individually and culturally, and other messages of attraction like scent. This gallery also explores the reproductive system

and how our human drive to procreate has transformed into our modern understanding of love, commitment, and relationship.

WHAT BECOMES OF US?

Every culture in the world has rituals for death and honoring the dead, and this gallery explores many of them while asking guests to reflect on where we might go when we die, what we leave behind, and what follows this life.

Carrie Underwood is back in Vegas. Her summer schedule found her wrapping her Denim & Rhinestones Tour, opening for Guns N’ Roses, filming promotional video for Sunday Night Football at Resorts World Las Vegas and making a pilgrimage to the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville for a two-night, four-set engagement. Then she returned to her Reflection: The Las Vegas Residency for the first time since the launch of her Sirius XM station, Carrie’s Country.

Underwood was ready to see some familiar faces, she said in a phone interview with Las Vegas Magazine That isn’t always possible on tour, when she can’t see past the first several rows. “I feel like when we’re in Resorts World, that theater is so great,” said Underwood. “They did such a great job of setting it up; it is very easy to just see everybody. For me, that’s the best part. I see familiar faces. I see fan club members. I see people that I’ve met before. I see

people from all over the world in the audience.”

Resorts World Theatre enables Underwood to enjoy fans enjoying themselves, generating shared energy that fuels her performances. Connecting with the audience, the songs, her band and the stage environment comes natural to her.

“I feel like the Opry is very easy and homey and comfortable,” she said from her tour bus, which was parked near the 4,400-seat venue. “Whenever we play here, we kind of get the chance to do stuff we don’t maybe normally do on tour or in Vegas. We can throw in a deep cut or something just because I want to (Laughs). So it’s really whatever I feel like, which is a lot of fun. I feel like people that come to see these shows kind of get something unique.”

People who came to see her open for Guns N’ Roses got to see something unique as well when she covered songs such as Joan Jett’s

“Bad Reputation” and Motorhead’s “Ace of Spades,” the latter of which was played before she took to the stage during the Denim & Rhinestones concerts.

“I was super nervous going into the whole thing because it’s not my audience,” she said. “I haven’t been an opening act in a very long time and I would only do it for Guns N’ Roses. When they called us up and said, ‘Hey, do you want to do this?' I was like, ‘Yeah, you could pay me in tickets! I’ll sit up there and watch the show and just have fun.'”

A recent Friday-night Reflection show coincided with the prerelease date of the deluxe edition of Diamonds & Rhinestones. The original 2022 album found her in a phase where she was very conscious of free-form aspects of the current musical landscapes.

“It’s like there are no rules anymore,” she said. “I felt like when we were writing and recording and stuff, I just wanted to be creative and make music that I wanted to listen to, and that’s what we did. ... It was just like, ‘What do we want to create?’”

Explore these hot spots to eat, drink and be merry

The Mirage was considered the Las Vegas Strip’s first megaresort when it opened its doors in 1989 and the most expensive for its time at a cost of $630

million. It would also usher in a higher level of luxury, guest offerings and immersive fantasy with a Polynesian island vibe, including the 80-foot-tall

atrium complete with lush vegetation. The Mirage continues its reputation as a longtime favorite for repeat visitors and a popular destination for the new generation by offering tons of amenities to enjoy a full day of vacationing. Here, we’ve rounded up three of our favorite spots to eat, drink and be merry. Enjoy!

Osteria Costa

Bright and airy, Osteria Costa transports guests to the Amalfi Coast in both décor and cuisine. And it’s the cuisine that makes this restaurant a must-visit for anyone who comes to The Mirage. Just ask server Rocco Davi, a longtime favorite server at the restaurant (who, coincidentally, has worked at the property since it opened). “It’s classic Italian, but it’s the best classic Italian you’re ever going to have,” Davi says. “I’m so proud of our chef because I have no problem walking up to a table and asking how our food is because I always get the same response, ‘It’s incredible.’ I’m confident in every dish here; it’s just great food.” Don’t miss the seasonal dishes right now, which include the squash blossom pizza and arugula salad. For dessert, a true taste of the Italian coast comes by way of the limoncello trio of berry, lemon and grapefruit. Osteria also offers a great happy hour every night from 9-10 p.m., with small plates and wines by the glass for only $9 and specialty cocktails for $10.

With the weather getting back to agreeable temperatures, the patio at Rhumbar Tropical Ultra Lounge is the perfect spot to chill with some cocktails. (And a cigar! They have a great selection.) The spacious outdoor space gives off a ’70s Miami vibe, and inside is a posh bar with lounge seating. At Rhumbar, the name of the game is rum cocktails, and boy, do they have an impressive

selection with specialty cocktail highlights like the 100 Foot Wave with Coruba dark rum and the Rhumbar Baller Old-Fashioned with Flor de Caña 18-year rum. Group fun should include one of the colossal cocktails that are meant to be shared, like the eye-catching Kiwi…Do You Love Me? and the Call the Fuzz Mimosa Tower. Keeping the party going each night are live DJs that get people up on their feet with a mix of musical genres.

With so much on your Vegas to-do list—from shows, dining and shopping to gambling and paying for your room—The Mirage has come in clutch by offering visitors free live entertainment nightly at the property. For a more social vibe (and in the heart of all the action on the casino floor), Center Bar offers live rock, pop and indie music from local bands and singers like Swipe Right, Ashley Red and Rock 702, in addition to DJs. Over at Parlor Cocktail Lounge, guests can relax in the intimate environment reminiscent of a speakeasy while listening to dueling pianos, acoustic duos and trios and pop sets from bands like Pop Rebels Duo and Downtown Avenue.

Heine 36 | 9.24.23 Las Vegas Magazine U2 and Sphere combine for an unforgettable experience

IT’S HARD TO TELL what is causing greater anticipation on Sept. 29: The arrival of U2 to Sphere to begin an extended engagement until the end of the year; or the unveiling of Sphere itself. You can’t even sniff social media these days without seeing the latest example of what video marvels the structure is capable of. Plenty of tourists (and locals) have gone out of their way to drive to Sands Avenue for a glimpse of the next generation of entertainment venue.

In a way, the combo of band and destination makes perfect sense: U2 is a band famous not only for its music and political stances but its larger-than-life, ever-evolving live performances, while Sphere, at least from the outside, has a chameleon-like ability to be almost anything you can think of. One has to assume it has the same capabilities inside. So, as big as U2’s shows have been up until now, it’s not beyond the realm of possibility that this latest venture will take the band’s live shows into uncharted territory.

One element that certainly points to that possibility is the technology contained within. The sound system, Sphere Immersive Sound powered by HOLOPLOT, is the world’s most advanced to date, providing amazing sound to every individual seat (and, at 18,600 seats, that’s quite a feat).

In promoting U2: UV Achtung Baby Live at Sphere, U2’s The Edge said as much in a news release: “The beauty of Sphere is not only the ground-breaking technology that will make it so unique, with the world’s most advanced audio system integrated into a structure which is designed with sound quality as a priority; it’s also the possibilities around immersive experiences in real and imaginary landscapes. “In short, it’s a canvas of an unparalleled scale and image resolution, and a once-in-a-generation opportunity. We all thought

about it and decided we’d be mad not to accept the invitation.”

For such an iconic occasion, Las Vegas could hardly have scored a more iconic band to commemorate it. Since releasing Boy in 1980, the band has been an institution, and while Bono and crew aren’t known for chart-topping hits (only two of their songs, “With Or Without You” and “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For,” have gone to No. 1 in the United States), their discography contains some of the genre’s most recognized, beloved music.

In the process, the band’s members have found their way into every part of pop culture, from movies (music for GoldenEye and Mission: Impossible) and Broadway (music for Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark) to collaborations with everyone from Green Day and Robbie Robertson to Roy Orbison and DJ Martin Garrix.

In U2, Las Vegas has found the perfect band for this occasion. And in Sphere, perhaps U2 has finally found what it’s been looking for all these years: The perfect live venue.

It’s finally football season! And no matter what team you’re rooting for, we’ve collected a few of the best sports bars to watch a game, whether you’re by yourself or with large group.

Mandalay Bay, flankerlv.com

One of the Strip’s newest sports-viewing venues is also one of the coolest, with its centerpiece being a massive, wall-to-wall screen. Add in shareable bites like lobster rolls, pigs in a blanket and a giant soft pretzel and you’ll be staying long after the game is over.

entrance, and it’s usually pretty packed. But it’s worth the wait for a table, because this is great for both sports viewing and people watching. And with a sizable menu of both draft and bottled beer (not to mention a popular Build Your Own Highball program, where you select your own spirit, garnish and Fever-Tree flavor), there’s a lot of fun to be had here.

Horseshoe Las Vegas, 02.794.3139

This celebrity chef doesn’t do anything small, and that’s definitely the case with his newest Strip destination, featuring dozens of TVs, dishes like pepperoni pizza pops and

a quesa-birria Mexican “pizza” and tons of beers.

702.732.5111

Start with the fact that this is the largest sportsbook in the world—30,000 square feet— and then add in some of the

best food and drink specials in town. Not convinced? How about having all your food delivered directly to your seat? Game over!

Treasure Island, 866.286.3809

With more than 20 TVs

spread strategically throughout, there’s not a bad seat anywhere, and with great shareables like Bases Loaded Nachos and Angry Croque Monsieur (ham, mushrooms, spinach and Swiss cheese fondue, all served on fried jalapeno bread), not to mention plenty of beers and signature cocktails, this is easily a top spot on the Strip for sports.

The Mirage, 702.692.8455

The first thing you’ll notice here is the mind-blowing beer selection at the center bar— more than 50 craft beers! And with 27 TVs, a food selection including tuna poke bowls, filet mignon skewers and deep-fried Oreos, it won’t be long before you’re recommending this destination to other sports fans. Now go cheer your team on!

Miracle Mile Shops, 702.737.0444

It’s easy to see why this remains one of the most successful bars in Las Vegas. It’s kinda hard to top 60 huge screens spread across 2,500 square feet, and there’s no better pregame for Monday and Thursday football games than the $20 all-you-candrink special from 3-6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Resorts World Las Vegas, 702.676.7000

Now this is what we’re talking about! Think of this as your man cave away from home, featuring everything from pool tables, arcade games and karaoke to beer pong and TVs galore. Add in delights like poke nachos, pepper poppers and Killer Wings (available from a pound all the way up to five), not to mention something called a Corona-rita (it’s as good as it sounds), and you may never want to leave!

Sahara Las Vegas, 702.761.7000

No doubt by now most of you are at least somewhat familiar with this chain’s famous signature dishes including Crabfries (crinkle-cut fries topped with cheese sauce, aioli and crab!), but what you may not know is that this lively venue boasts more than 50 TVS and seating to fit any sized group.

in the career of boxing’s biggest current superstar begins this week in Las Vegas when Saul “Canelo” Álvarez fights for the first time under Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions banner.

Jermell Charlo (35-1-1) will stand across the ring from Álvarez (59-2-2) in a super middleweight bout of historic proportions. The showdown between the two 33-year-old veterans marks the first time in boxing’s four belt era, which began in 2004, that two undisputed champions will face each other.

Álvarez currently holds all the major titles in the 164-pound super middleweight class, while Charlo will jump up two divisions from the 154-pound light middleweight class, where he’s reigned for the last three years.

“Being undisputed, very few fighters in the history of boxing accomplish this,” Álvarez said in a prefight news conference. “I’m just happy to be here, happy to be a part of big fights.”

Álvarez shocked fans in June with the announcement of a three-fight deal reportedly worth more than $100 million with Haymon, a longtime boxing power broker who famously managed the career of Floyd Mayweather Jr. Possibilities suddenly became plentiful for Álvarez, given all the championship-caliber fighters Haymon counts among his stable.

Álvarez was expected to kick off his Premier Boxing Champions deal against Charlo’s twin brother, Jermall, an undefeated middleweight who’s spent most of his career fighting closer to Alvarez’s weight class.

But Jermall has been inactive since June 2021 on a mental health break and didn’t feel ready to return for a bout of this magnitude. The opportunity then fell to Jermell.

“When I got the call, all I could say was, ‘Jump on. Let’s get it. Let’s go,’” Jermell said at a news conference. “My whole career has been about almost chasing Canelo. Canelo has been a top guy for a long time, and if you want to be great, you always want to fight the top guy.”

Álvarez is widely regarded as one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world— he’s rated No. 5 in both ESPN and The Ring Magazine’s rankings—but the 33-year-old has slipped from the top where he sat earlier in his career. His recent outings haven’t been all that dominant, as Álvarez suffered a shocking upset loss to Dmitry Bivol in May 2022 before having since bounced back to beat Gennady Golovkin and John Ryder via a pair of relatively unimpressive unanimous decisions.

“I understand what the people say, and I agree,” Álvarez said. “I didn’t look my best in the last two fights, but I know why and I’m ready for this fight. ...You’re going to see something different.”

Jermell meanwhile has been mostly absent in pound-for-pound discussions, which he feels is a slight and something he wants to change in a quest to become known for more than being “just the little Charlo.” An upset victory over a bigger fighter, both in terms of popularity and physicality, would accomplish that goal.

Despite having a smaller frame, Jermell will actually hold a 4-inch height and 2.5-inch reach advantage over Álvarez. Jermell also figures to be the faster fighter, though the edge in power belongs to Álvarez.

“Everybody has wanted to see this fight for a long time,” Álvarez said. “I think both (Charlos) are great fighters. I respect them, but I think Jermell has better opposition and I think he’s the better fighter.”

A Little Slice of Heaven

Southern Highlands home is filled with elegant touches

If you’re a fan of both golf and highend living, you may want to consider living at Southern Highlands. It’s a beautiful masterplanned community with seven parks, walking paths, hiking and biking trails, and two dog parks—and the 18-hole Southern Highlands Golf Course, designed by

Robert Trent Jones Sr. and Jr. For families, it really doesn’t get much better than this. And a home has just become available, a sprawling estate that’s the ultimate in luxury.

This two-story, 4,876-square-foot paradise in the guard-gated Foothills community, listed by Robert

Martin of Huntington & Ellis, features plenty of options for even the largest of families, thanks to its six bedrooms and six bathrooms. The three-car garage has plenty of space for your fleet.

The first thing you’ll notice about this home is its grand foyer

entrance. The touches throughout are nothing short of elegant, from porcelain floors and mosaic-tiled walls to a chandelier and new lighting fixtures throughout.

The highlight here is definitely the chef’s kitchen, featuring an extended island, designer cabinets with glass doors and top-of-theline, professional-grade appliances, including Wolf and Sub-Zero. You’ll look forward to spending plenty of time cooking here—and enjoying get-togethers.

All the bedrooms here are showcases (there’s also a guest house), but the spacious primary suite truly stands out with vaulted ceilings, a redesigned bathroom (including a custom vanity), and a large balcony with a custom spiral staircase leading down to the backyard.

Oh, the backyard! Whether you access them through spiral staircase or glass sliding doors, this is an oasis you will treasure with family and friends. Not only does it boast a pool with a cascading waterfall, private

grotto and waterslide, there’s also an outdoor kitchen with a built-in barbecue and a fireplace.

One of the best things about living in Southern Highlands? The access to high-quality schools, including Charles and Phyllis Frias Elementary School, Tarkanian Middle School and Desert Oasis High School. Welcome home! –Ken Miller
