Are you celebrating a birthday, anniversary or a special milestone in Las Vegas this week? If so, get ready for the time of your life! Few cities are better designed for such occasions, and as you plan your experiences this week, we highly recommend letting your destinations know this information in advance. Trust us, you won’t regret it.
This week’s issue is all about such special occasions. This month, Fantasy: The Strip’s Sexiest Tease at Luxor, celebrates its 24th anniversary (“Birthday Suits,” p. 32), while Pi the Magic Dragon celebrates 1,500 shows at Flamingo (“...and His Little Dog, Too,” p. 34). And as the Fountains of Bellagio celebrates its 25th year of wowing passersby, associate editor Kiko Miyasato takes a look behind the scenes at the people who have helped create the magic (“The Shape of Water,” p. 36 ).
But we haven’t stopped there. Get ready for some amazing live music this week, including a killer lineup at Palms (“Listen Up!” p. 12), Usher at Dolby Live at Park MGM (“Get Caught Up,” p. 14), Katy Perry at Resorts World Las Vegas (“Kitschy Queen,” p. 18), and DJ Snake at the same property (“From Paris, With Love,” p. 21).
How about some great breakfasts and brunches? For a truly special morning meal, check out the Acoustic Brunch at Hard Rock Cafe (“Ballads, Burritos and Benedicts,” p. 20), and fans of Mexican cuisine will fi nd much to enjoy at Casa Calavera at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas (“Brunch Bonanza,” p. 28).
Looking for something the whole family can enjoy? Watch your kids gape with wonder at the engaging and educational Dino Safari: A Walk Thru Adventure at Horseshoe Las Vegas (“Ancient Amusement,” p. 17 ).
Whatever you might be in town to celebrate, we hope we help you to do it in style.

Property boasts an incredible, varied music lineup this week
You would almost think a music festival had hit Palms! The property is chockful of amazing bands and performers this week, and if you have the energy (and budget), you could conceivably squeeze them all in.
Speaking of which … Squeeze is one of this week’s highlights, performing along with the Psychedelic Furs, pictured, on Oct. 14. Both British rock bands can trace their roots back decades, with Squeeze bursting on the scene in 1978 and the Furs making its debut in 1980. Both have an unmistakable sound, Squeeze’s greatest hits being earworms like “Tempted,” “Hourglass” and “Black Coffee In Bed,” while the Furs gave us the immortal “Pretty In Pink” (which led to the creation of one of my wife’s favorite movies).
How about American rock bands? How about none other than Cheap Trick (Oct. 12), which all but defined the sound of its ’70s era with singles like “Surrender,” “Dream Police” and “I Want You to Want Me.” Best of all, the band still maintains most of its original members, Rick Nielsen, Robin Zander and Tom Petersson. If you’ve never seen them live, this is a show you do not want to miss.
How about mellowing the vibe out a bit? And whom better to accomplish that feat than Christopher Cross (Oct. 15), the man who singlehandedly invented yacht rock? (And yes, we consider that a very good thing.) “Sailing” and “Run Like the Wind” are classics of their kind, but Cross has plenty of newer material designed to get you in a boat shoe state of mind.
For a truly feel-good experience, don’t miss Babyface (Oct. 13), not only an amazing performer, but also one of the most prolific (and successful) producers of all time—he’s had a hand in everything from the songs of TLC, Toni Braxton, Whitney Houston and Boyz II Men to hit movie soundtracks like Waiting to Exhale. His impact on modern music is immeasurable, and if you attend this show, you can be sure to find yourself saying over and over again, “I didn’t know he wrote this, too!” –Ken Miller
Palms, ticketmaster.comIt isn’t hard to see why Usher was tapped to play the halftime show in Super Bowl LVIII: His appeal spreads to fans of such legendary performers as James Brown, Michael Jackson and Prince, all of whom he’s distilled into a very unique style. If you don’t want to wait until February to see him, snag a ticket for his newest Strip production, Usher: My Way—The Vegas Residency
This is a show that hearkens back to the days of old Vegas, where the stars had the audience hanging on every note, every syllable. Usher’s band, consisting of saxophonists, pianists and guitarists, renders his greatest hits—from “Caught Up” to “U Don’t Have to Call”—with an energy that has everyone dancing in the aisles. And slow jams like “Lovers and Friends” bring out the more, um, amorous side of his biggest fans and their dates.
Speaking of dancing, Usher displays more than a few of his inimitable moves during this show—including an amazingly choreographed chair routine with a cadre of male dancers, as well as on roller skates when performing “Superstar.” (His skating prowess is clear in the music video for “Good Love.”) And the production design here is without peer, including a two-story strip club structure, complete with pole dancers.
“I love the venue,” Usher, who previously performed at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace, told Las Vegas Magazine. “I love the energy and I love the accommodations. It just felt like a natural transition. After considering the type of creative (content) I wanted for this next show, it would be the perfect house to give me that opportunity to shock people. I always said if I go to Las Vegas, I would want to play it my way, and maybe there’s some Frank Sinatra somewhere deep in there. “I think I got some things off my first time (at the Colosseum), but this time? I really get to do it my way.”

For Katy Perry, pop music’s reigning Queen of Camp, “Waking Up in Vegas” has become much more than a hit song and set list staple. Perry is and will always be a California gurl, but her Las Vegas residency places her on a stage that’s likely not far from where her aunt once kicked up her heels as a showgirl at the Stardust Resort and Casino. That property was imploded in 2007, making way for new beginnings and the explosive success of Perry’s residency, Play.
By the end of its inaugural run that launched Dec. 29, 2021, Play grossed nearly $7 million with at least 32,000 Perry fans making the pilgrimage to her royal court. Inspired by childhood memories of television and film comedies such as Pee-wee’s Playhouse and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, Perry and her production team let their imaginations run wild. They were so flushed with excitement that they even created an oversized commode with a talking inhabitant.
Perry balances the fun onstage with the seriousness of being in top condition physically and mentally to make Play look as effortlessly fun to present as it is demanding to perform. Perry became a mom during the pandemic, making her well-being a priority to balance work and family life. She even launched a nonalcoholic drink, De Soi, with a friend who also experienced a recent pregnancy and is making it available at Play for the sober-curious.
Her performance is intoxicating all on its own. Fans who attended Play last year witnessed Perry descend from the ceiling and placed in a bed by a giant hand to sing “E.T.” Styling by RuPaul collaborator Zaldy included colorfully gaudy ’60s-inspired outfits, a crystal dress embellished by strategically placed beer cans, a mushroom cap and a baby doll dress. –Matt

KelemenAt the Hard Rock Cafe on the Las Vegas Strip, fuel up for the morning while enjoying music with the restaurant’s Acoustic Breakfast. Every morning from 8-11 a.m., musicians take up their instruments and serenade guests while they dine.
Order up endless mimosas to start or grab the Hard Rock Bloody Mary, with Major Peter’s Bloody Mary mix and Tito’s vodka. For your entrée, check out a classic eggs Benedict with Canadian bacon, egg and hollandaise on English
muffin, or kick it up with the eggs Benedict slider, which adds on sautéed spinach, bacon and a burger slider. The breakfast burrito is massive, with three scrambled eggs, cheese, home fries and bacon or sausage. Or opt for the chicken and waffle, with a Belgian waffle and smoked applewood bacon. French toast, avocado toast, buttermilk pancakes, steak and eggs, and eggwhite omelets are other good choices.
This week, singer and musician Betsy Holm plays on Oct. 8-9. Holm
has performed in many types of bands through the years, from jazz to rock, and is known for her soulful voice. And from Oct. 10-14, Nick Mattera entertains, with a mix of songs that range from U2 and Neil Young to his original music.

DJ is ready to rock hot Strip nightclub
DJ Snake began his love affair with making music in his teen years in his native France, and you can catch the superstar at Zouk Nightclub on Oct. 12.
Can you share some background about your life?
I grew up right outside of Paris. The closest thing I could compare it to is how New York has boroughs. I only had one normal job in my life ... It was at a record shop when I was a kid until I was about 16 years old. I remember selling records to the Daft Punk crew when I was 15. This is where my taste and ear for music developed.
What types of music did you listen to growing up?
My mom is Algerian and has always had a huge love for music. She would play everything from classic Arabic and African music to R&B. I was inspired by so many of the greats: 2Pac, Sade, James Brown. Everything!
Tell me about the artists you’ve worked with.
I’ve worked with so many great artists, from Cheb Khaled, who is one of the biggest Arabic artists of all time, to (Justin) Bieber, Cardi (B), J Balvin, Future and more. They all have inspired me in different ways.
Talk about your Zouk nightclub residency.
I love playing at Zouk and Ayu (dayclub) because I have the freedom to go up there and completely freestyle my set and play what I want. ... Zouk also has a magic to the room—I love the layout, the sound, production.
Anything new with work or life you can share with our readers?

It’s such an only-in-Vegas moment: Upon stepping off the elevators to Legacy Club, you’ll be greeted by local legends like Howard Hughes, Jay Sarno, Benny Binion and Jackie Gaughan. Well, these men have passed away, so not exactly. What you actually see are metal busts of those men, plus six more notables, that welcome you to the bar and lounge on the 60th floor that honors the spirit of the icons.
The literal crowning jewel of Circa Resort & Casino (it sits on the hotel’s rooftop) offers an indoor and outdoor experience that should be on everyone’s to-do list while visiting Las Vegas. Not only will the phenomenal views of downtown, the Strip and beyond leave you completely in awe, but Legacy
Club is also a top spot for chic and lush surroundings, an impressive cocktail program and some of the best bartenders in the biz. In fact, in two of the industry’s most-respected competitions, Legacy Club’s lead bartender was rated a top 10 bartender in the West, and the whole bar team was rated one of the top 30 in the nation.
“The drinking experience is second to none here,” said Sam Pulliam, the director of beverage for Circa Resort & Casino. “The team we have is the best in the city. The menu is diverse. We have something for every flavor palate; if we don’t, then you can tell any of our bartenders ... some flavors that you like, and they can make you a cocktail off the cuff that’s gonna hit that sweet spot.”
Book the Sunset Package. “Choose a Strip view table or outside at a fire pit for $100,” Pulliam said. “It comes with a champagne toast at sunset, two cocktails and a little surprise of small bites to eat. It’s cool, because there’s not a view like this in the city where you get to see the sun go down and the city turn on.”
Book the Craft Cocktail Course. Every Friday and Saturday from 2-4 p.m. you’ll get your own bartender kit, learn how to make three cocktails and get schooled on the world of spirits by the bartender leading the class.
Check out the case filled with 1,000 ounces of real gold!
Enjoy live music on the weekends.
Legacy Club takes nonalcoholic cocktails seriously, too. Check out the recipes and you’ll be tempted to order one yourself.
Cigar smokers will enjoy the cigar menu offerings with brands like Montecristo, Ashton Monarch, Cohiba, Rocky Patel, Patron and more.
Pulliam spotlights three specialty cocktails to try, beginning with the Triple Seven. “It’s citrusy, floral, light and refreshing,” he said. Similar to a classic sour cocktail, it’s mixed with Patrón sherry cask-aged anejo, pisco, St-Germain, framboise, lime, egg white and blackberry.
“The way cocktails have kind of evolved over the years, people have tried to incorporate different spices you’d see in cooking and see how they can be incorporated into cocktails,” Pulliam said. “We’re trying to think outside the box but also make drinks that are still approachable for everybody.” And the perfect example of this philosophy is the Lucky Rabbit. It uses a sweet and slightly spiced syrup made from the Mediterranean spice ras el hanout, and the delicious result is mixed with Appleton Estate 12 Year Old Rare Casks rum, Principe de los Apostoles Mate gin, carrot juice and citrus juice and is topped with black salt for a truly unique, and delicious, flavor experience.
For those who like varying degrees of spice in their cocktail, try the What’s Your Number? The special blend of Casamigos blanco tequila, Ancho Reyes verde chile poblano liqueur, coconut, agave
and citrus juice is elevated with your choice of desired spice level, provided by one to five dashes of firewater bitters. This cocktail is not only tasty but also an adventure for your palate, and comes with a tiny coconut tart to aid in toning down the hotness you’ll feel in the back of your throat after each sip.
Fans of brown spirits can rejoice at Legacy Club with its wide and rare selection of whiskies and bour-
bons. “We have the 1994 to 1996 O.F.C. bourbon, Pappy Van Winkle, Weller, Old Rip Van Winkle,” Pulliam said. “We’ve even secured our own private barrels that are unique to Legacy Club—barrels from Blanton’s, Frey Ranch, Jefferson’s Reserve, Buffalo Trace, Weller and Russell’s Reserve.” –Kiko Miyasato

Michelle Dancy is a server at Hofbräuhaus Las Vegas, but back in 2007, she was just a guest. She was in town for a convention, and on the last day of her trip she and a group of colleagues decided to dine at the Bavarian-inspired restaurant and beer hall. It turned out to be a very significant meal.
“We came to the Hofbräuhaus to eat, and I jokingly said, ‘If it was ever to move to Vegas, I would totally work here,’” Dancy says.
A couple of years later, her words became her new reality. And almost 15
years later, she’s fallen in love with the restaurant and its staff. With Hofbräuhaus’ authentic way of bringing a little slice of Germany to Las Vegas, Dancy fits in perfectly, as she was born and raised in Frankfurt.
“It feels a little bit like home with the bands, the food. It’s my home away from home. It’s my family. Over the years you just grow together and become really close,” she says.
As a server, Dancy can be seen out on the floor interacting with her guests and carrying up to 10 steins! And this

month, you’ll see her participating in the restaurant’s Oktoberfest festivities. “There’s celebrity keg tappers, a parade, cheering, bands and trumpets, Bavarian flags,” she says. “It’s an event for sure.”
Dancy, a mother of two and avid outdoor enthusiast, encourages Las Vegas visitors to try out Hofbräuhaus for themselves, just like she did all those years ago. “It’s really hard not to have fun when you have a one liter of beer in your hand,” she says. “The vibe here at Hofbräuhaus just carries people away.” –Kiko Miyasato

Enjoy the lovely fall weather in Las Vegas with La Mañana Brunch on Sundays at Casa Calavera. The Mexican restaurant makes a perfect spot to fuel up and have a few delicious cocktails before getting on with your day. The restaurant itself is lively, with the Mexican-themed décor carrying through the dining area, bar and patio, with rustic wood, Mexican tiles and colorful murals. It’s the second location, with another in Baja California.
Brunch, which starts at 10 a.m., is always better with a cocktail, and Casa Calavera o ers plenty of options for you. If you’re sharing with friends (and of course you are), order a sangria pitcher or the huge Lickity Split Margarita, with
Volcan blanco tequila, Cointreau, agave nectar and lime juice. Don’t want to share? Try a tequila sunrise (Casamigos blanco, orange juice and grenadine); or bottomless mimosas or bellinis.
Start o the parade of food with chicken taquitos, chicken quesadilla with poblanos rajas, an ahi tuna tostada with avocado, or avocado and roasted corn taquitos with sweet potato for the vegan in your group. If you are a guaca-
mole fan, choose from chipotle bacon, mango and a classic version. Follow that up with tacos—Casa Calavera has an inspired selection. There are three per order, so make sure your group orders a few di erent kinds, so you can try more than one variety. Some of those include chorizo and egg, grilled Baja fish and shredded beef.
If you haven’t ordered every permeation of tacos, then go for a bigger en-
trée like the Juanito cakes stack, yellow corn cakes with chocolate sauce, maple syrup, berry compote and whipped butter. The Catrina avocado toast layers the lush veg on top of grilled ninegrain bread with pickled red onion, a hard-cooked egg, radish, tomatillo salsa and pico de gallo. Chilaquiles come in two forms: the carne asada chilaquiles with chips, eggs, Oaxacan cheese, guajillo sauce and crema; and the Casa
Chilaquiles, a vegan version with guajillo sauce sweet potato, vegan eggs and cheese, avocado salsa and fire-roasted salsa. The brunch menu is packed with egg dishes like huevos rancheros, with eggs and ranchero sauce, plus a choice of achiote chicken, shredded beef or pork carnitas; and huevos Mexicana, with scrambled eggs, Oaxacan cheese, poblano-onion breakfast potato and beans.
Other classic Mexican breakfast dishes get a twist here, too, like the short rib Benedict, rich with braised short rib, cheese pupusas, poached eggs and a chipotle Hollandaise sauce. The breakfast burrito is stu ed with scrambled eggs, chorizo, beans, potatoes and rajas.
Although poblano-onion breakfast potatoes come on many of the plates, you can also order them on the side, along with Mexican rice and beans, yuca fries, smoked bacon and grilled veggies—if you need something to fill in the holes.

Twenty-four years ago this month, Fantasy: The Strip’s Sexiest Tease creator Anita Mann was adding the fi nishing touches to her contemporary take on showgirl productions before previews began. The show’s initial six-month contract left no room for Mann to consider she and her team were launching a show that after nearly a half-century would continue to thrive and draw capacity crowds to its home inside the Luxor. “We’re having a fun year. We’re excited that we’re celebrating 24 years,” says Mann. “I look forward to our 25th celebration already!”
And 24 is the age where most people have mastered the art of young adulthood and prepare for the fi nal phase of life experience before age 25. For Mann, age 24 was the year that she reached her peak as an in-demand professional
By Matt Kelemendancer before crossing over into being a full-time choreographer.
“I did every show on television as a dancer until I was 24,” recalls Mann, who was a featured dancer in the ’60s pop music variety series Shindig! and appeared in 1968’s iconic Elvis: The Comeback Special at age 22. “When I turned 25, I became a choreographer.”
That’s when, her longtime friends tell her, she grew up. Mann went on to choreograph specials for CBS, work for Lucille Ball and participate in the Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon, where one year she danced a tribute to the late Gregory Hines with tap legend Jason Samuels Smith. She also choreographed several Miss America pageants, but it was her work on Top 10 countdown series Solid Gold in the ’80s that was a precursor to her current creation.
The creator of Fantasy: The Strip’s Sexiest Tease opens up about the revue turning 24
Once Mann’s proposal for an adultthemed show at Luxor was accepted, she had six weeks to cast, rehearse and costume dancers. Mann’s show opened on Nov. 1, 1999, although the previous month’s soft openings led to a tradition of celebrating anniversaries in October. “I remember it so well because we were on at midnight. It was called Midnight Fantasy in 1999.”
The original show had a Cinderella theme threading through it, but luckily the show did not turn into a pumpkin when the clock struck midnight. “I sat there with Beverly (Jeanne, executive producer), who still runs my company, holding her hand, not breathing. … And it was good!”
After an additional earlier show was added, the title became simply Fantasy. Now Mann has an entire history of choreography to draw on as she prepares for the next phase. Classic numbers will be revived alongside new elements and new choreography.
“I just feel so incredibly blessed. We have this home, this theater. I just wake up every day with gratitude,” she says. The idea that the show would become such a major part of her life and the lives of many dancers was beyond her comprehension 24 years ago. “I thought, ‘If we get through six months, I’ll be happy.’”
Magic was once the realm of wizards and mythical creatures, secrets spells and sorcery. Then Las Vegas sprouted up in the desert and stage illusion productions evolved, with white tigers capturing the
public’s imagination. Veteran practitioners of prestidigitation such as Pi the Magic Dragon were forced to shed their skins and conjure new innovations in performing for the masses.
For Pi , who becomes John van der Put o stage, that involved enlisting the aid of Mr. Pi es, a white Chihuahua, and taking audience participation to a new level. He has documented his experience as a magic dragon before moving forward, though, an endeavor that is materializing in hardcover format with the
The 434-page tome of tricks should be available through online book retailers soon, but look out for it after shows at Pi ’s swag table, alongside stu ed toy replicas of the World’s Only Magic Performing Chihuahua, playing cards and pizza clocks. The latter will make sense to anyone who has seen one of Pi ’s recent shows, where he descends from the rafters and proceeds to pound a beer before creating a rambunctious rapport with the audience.
“I definitely want to get the audience’s attention from the beginning,” said van der Put after a Sunday night show. “And sort of have them thinking, ‘Oh, wait. He could talk to me at any point. I could be in the show at any point.’ That’s
something I want to do from the start, is immediately be talking to people.”
After taunting ticket holders who are still texting after the show begins, he has Mr. Pi es shot onstage from a cannon. A natural for his role, Pi es is unfazed by
the explosive entrance and remains so throughout the show. Pi es’ fans, who know him from America’s Got Talent and Penn & Teller: Fool Us, react with a mix of surprise, relief and a ection as Pi es takes his place strapped to Pi ’s torso. While Pi es goes with the flow, Pi generates the madcap atmosphere that makes each performance feel fresh, like anything can happen. “With magic, the tricks stay the same, but the audience changes completely,” said van der Put.
Audience members are invited at various points in the show to approach the front of the stage for a direct dragon encounter, with a select few of those invited to come onstage. Sometimes Pi makes a spontaneous decision; sometimes he can tell early on that someone might be perfect for a bit later in the show.
Sometimes they’ll let him know they are partly responsible for the more than 750,000 views his year-old YouTube special, Reptile Dysfunction, has received so far. The special and the book precede the landmark upcoming date of Oct. 21, when Pi es turns 16 and Pi celebrates their 1,500th show as Strip headliners. A TV project starring the two is on the way as well, but for now the best way come under the spell of a magic dragon is to visit Las Vegas.

Photo by Photo by Christopher DeVargasThis month, the Bellagio celebrates its 25th year on the Las Vegas Strip. In honor of the momentous occasion, Las Vegas Magazine highlights one of the resort’s most iconic offerings, the Fountains of Bellagio. It’s one of the most stunning attractions on the Strip, but it doesn’t just happen. The fountains have a crackerjack team working behind the scenes, 365 days a year, to ensure that the watery spectacle continues to flow beautifully after more than two decades. We went beyond the façade and captured the inner workings of the fountains—an operation that few are privy to. Dozens of
employees work on the fountains, including engineers, pool specialists and maintenance divers—and each employee is scuba-certified and holds Open Water Diver or Rescue Diver certifications. Get to know three of those employees, who have all been with the Bellagio since day one. You’ll also get a peek of the support area, where the equipment and mechanics for the fountains are stored. It’s a cavernous space just off the 8.5-acre Lake Bellagio and continues underneath the hotel’s landscaping. The inside look continues with the bat cave, the compression room and, finally, the control tower.

Having over 1,200 devices, we are constantly replacing parts that are broken or potentially worn out. Our goal is to ensure everything works perfectly at all times.
What are some of the most important things you need to remember when operating the fountains?
Safety is always most important to us. Beyond that,
we make sure the fountains look good and run perfectly for the many visitors that come to watch them.
How many dives would you say you’ve done?
Over 2,500 dives.
What do you love most about your job?
We are always working on something different; no two days are the same. One day we may be diving, another day working on shows, another day working with film crews for movies or commercials that feature the fountains.
What are some of the best parts about working for Bellagio?
We are always working with new exciting projects,
film shoots and events. There is always something exciting happening at Bellagio.
Maintenance engineer
Where are you from?
I was born in Burbank, Calif., and grew up in the Los Angeles area.
What’s your work background?
Warehouse worker and a college student at UNLV.
When you got hired by Bellagio did you have the title you have now?
No, I started in construction security at Bellagio. I did that until June of 1998 and then I got into engineer-
ing and began working on the fountains.
What was it like when Bellagio fi rst opened?
It was great. I loved working during the construction of Bellagio, especially when they fi lled the lake with water. I used to drive my personal vehicle in the lake before they fi lled it up, which is such an awesome memory to have.
What does your current job entail?
I handle daily fountain maintenance. I do everything from working on lights to diving and repairing pipes and structures under the water. I also rig and drive a forklift, booms and scissor lifts for Bellagio Conservatory.
It takes WET (the company behind the design and choreography of the fountain performances) several months to develop, design and perfect a new song for the catalog. Some of the songs include:
In celebration of Bellagio’s 25th anniversary, the resort will feature a new fountains show:
and Andrea
Cher Lady Gaga Bruno Mars Ed Sheeran BocelliWhat are some of the most important things to remember when operating the fountains?
I always remind myself to enjoy the beauty and elegance of the Bellagio fountains—it’s so amazing
how they make people cry with joy and happiness and how they’ve become such an iconic Las Vegas experience.
How many dives would you say you’ve done?
This is where the magic happens. The main computers that control the lighting, sound and performance numbers are located in this tower. Here is also where you’ll fi nd the “famous” green button. At the top of the tower, accessible only by ladder, workstations command awesome views overlooking the lake. Each choreographed show is stored on computers. To start a new show, the fi le is uploaded and the green button initiates the fountains—a button only a handful of people have pushed, including this writer!
I can’t even guess. We always log our dives, but after 25 years of doing this, I have lost count!
What do you love most about your job?
Diving and doing the lake maintenance!
Tell us an interesting story or two about your job at the fountains.
Working here has been the greatest job. I get to meet so many incredible people, from the people we work with to build structures on the lake, to singers and athletes who work with the fountains, to my day-to-day colleagues.
What do you love about living in Las Vegas?
Working on the world-famous fountains is a huge plus. I love that Las Vegas is a 24-hour town and much smaller than Los Angeles!
What’s best about working for Bellagio?
The people I work with. I have the honor to work with some of the most talented people!
Where are you from?
Born in Texas; raised in Las Vegas.
What is your work background?
I served in the U.S. Marines and worked as a Golden Nugget security o cer.
When you got hired by Bellagio, did you have the title you have now?
No, I started at Bellagio as a security fi rst responder before eventually joining the fountains team.
What was it like at Bellagio when it opened?
It kind of felt like the fi rst day of school. You don’t know anyone, you get lost easily and you’re trying to make a good impression, but everyone is excited for what’s to come.
What does your current job entail?
I work to maintain the tens of thousands of components that are in the lake. I handle proactive maintenance—fi x it before it breaks. I adjust and calibrate the devices that you see during a show.
How many dives would you say you’ve done?
Well, I dive every day and I’ve been doing this for close to 20 years, so I have done a lot of dives!
What do you love most about your job?
That it doesn’t feel like a job. Every day is like a box of chocolates!
What do you love about living in Las Vegas?
I love the heat and how I don’t have to wear a raincoat or shovel snow or rake up leaves. Working at Bellagio is awesome; your co-workers are like family and there
are many opportunities to advance in your career.
What are some of the best parts about working for Bellagio?
Bellagio provides a wonderful, safe working
environment and gives us clean uniforms, good food, high-level training, awesome benefits and everyone here has the same goal of giving our guests the best experience that they will never forget.
It’s so loud inside the compressor room that one is advised to wear industrial-strength earmu s. Inside this room sits two of the large compressors (of 10 total) used in the show. The compressors operate at about 3,000 horsepower and push through approximately 9,000 cubic feet of air per minute. Large storage tanks of soft water, used for the fog that drifts across the lake, are also in this room. The ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) panel that protects people and equipment is also here. The panel shuts down all the electricity on the lake in the event of an emergency or electrocution, reacting faster than the blink of an eye.
Inside the bat cave, located in the front features support area, is where you’ll fi nd the water-emitting devices. Workers clean and repair all of them in-house. The devices include three shooters of di erent sizes that push water straight into the air at varying heights. The mini shooter (798 total) goes 100 feet up, the super shooter (192 total) goes 240 feet up and the extreme shooter (16 total) goes 460 feet up. The oarsmen (at top of photo column) spray water—this is where the “dancing fountains” come into play. There are 208 in the lake and 13 spares. The streams of water can reach 77 feet high and flow up to 140 gallons per minute.
Home in The Ridges is a perfect blend of comfort and sophistication
Las Vegas is home to many luxurious masterplanned communities, ones that offer the highest-quality homes, amenities and spectacular views of the valley and its surroundings. One of the best examples of these is The Ridges in Summerlin, a guard-gated, masterplanned
community close to Red Rock Conservation Area. And a property has recently become available there, a massive estate with sensational touches that will have all visitors gazing in awe.
This two-story showcase, listed by Ivan Sher of IS LUXURY, features
five bedrooms and seven bathrooms spread across 9,311 square feet, and the size of your car fleet doesn’t matter—there’s also a five-car garage.
Combining sophistication and comfort, this home boasts unparalleled views of the Las Vegas Strip, thanks to its large, floor-to-ceiling
windows and open floor plan. The exterior is sure to impress your guests, thanks to a combination of desert landscaping and the clean, sharp lines of the home itself.
The interior is extremely welcoming, with wood floors and natural stone, and the line between indoors and outdoors is blurred by the addition of large sliding pocket doors. If you’re into entertaining, this is about as good as it gets, thanks to a sensational chef’s kitchen equipped with top-of-the-line appliances.
And wait until you see this home’s subterranean level! The perfect retreat for movie nights or staying active, it features a private media space and state-of-the-art gym. Plan on spending lots of time here.
We haven’t even gotten to the bedrooms yet! They’re all relaxation destinations, with the primary bedroom featuring more of those floor-to-ceiling windows as well as a private balcony, from which you can view the wonderful backyard, complete with luxurious pool and
spa, outdoor barbecue and more of those spectacular views.
And, of course, don’t forget the benefits that come from living in The Ridges—access to some of the state’s finest golf courses, worldclass dining, shopping, miles of walking trails and so much more. Plus, The Ridges offers a 24-hour, guard-gated entrance. –Ken Miller
