I was first introduced to the music of Frankie Valli while watching, of all things, the ultra-depressing Best Picture winner of 1978, The Deer Hunter. The song, “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You,” plays in a bar while the characters take turns joyfully singing it at the top of their lungs. I got the message loud and clear before I even knew who had performed this amazing song: Even in The Deer Hunter’s world of war, suicide and depression, the music of Frankie Valli awakens something in you, something positive and celebratory. Needless to say, I became obsessed with Valli’s music, and can now probably sing every one of his hits note for note. And I’m sure I’m not alone. After all, there’s a reason the Broadway musical Jersey Boys, based on the lives of Valli and the Four Seasons, was such a hit: The group’s music transcends generations, finding its way into every corner of pop culture. And decades after turning the music world on its ear, Valli is still not done. At 89, Valli is launching a residency at Westgate Las Vegas, and he plans to perform there at least into 2024. Check out our exclusive interview with the icon, who talks about his varied career and those who inspired him most (“Jersey Voice,” p. 34). Valli tops my list of must-see shows this week, but there are definitely others worthy of your entertainment dollar. Theo Von, a comedian of many talents, performs this week at Resorts World Las Vegas (“Candidly Funny,” p. 38). And two genre-spanning sounds, Tech N9ne and Hollywood Undead—who recently collaborated on a single—will perform a double bill at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas (“Combining Forces,” p. 40). There’s one thing we all have in common with Valli: Something inspires us. We hope you find something in this week’s issue that does just that.

An Iconic Anniversary Celebration showcases restaurant and hotel’s 10 years of excellence

This week, one of the hottest events around is at Nobu Las Vegas inside Caesars Palace, where celebrity chef Nobu Matsuhisa hosts a fabulous 10-year anniversary party for the restaurant and for Nobu Hotel on Oct. 27. It’s hard to believe it’s been a decade since Matsuhisa, Robert De Niro and Meir Teper collaborated on the first branded hotel by the celebrity chef, a collaboration that led to Nobu Hospitality’s collection of 18 hotels worldwide. The hotel has been a draw for stars and for movers and shakers since it opened in 2013 and, last year, underwent an extensive refresh of the hotel’s 184 rooms as well as the 10,300-square-foot, rooftop Nobu Villa. Across the hotel, guests now find a modern style inspired by kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing pottery with gold epoxy. If you can score tickets to the celebration, you’ll enjoy an enormous array of Nobu signature dishes and special creations inspired by the 10 North American Nobu Hotels: Tako “Tacu-tacu” tacos; king crab with yuzu kosho; slow-cooked pork belly with pickled peach amazu ponzu; lobster robatayaki; a Po’ boy with crispy oyster “beignet”; Belgian endive filled with cucumber and sliced heirloom tomato; and much more. Representing Nobu Hotel is the sushi bar, with a variety of hand rolls and signature caviar tacos. And if you are staying at the Nobu Hotel, make sure you take advantage of the exclusive in-room dining menu curated by Nobu’s culinary team, plus Nobu breakfast through in-room dining. The celebration also highlights the special relationship that Nobu Hospitality has with Caesars Entertainment—Nobu Hotels are also planned to open at Atlantic City and New Orleans Caesars properties. But Caesars Palace will always be the home of the original! –Nina King Nobu Hotel, 800.727.4923; Nobu Las Vegas, 702.785.6628

Get to Groovin’

Legendary R&B band returns to the Strip Do you remember the 21st night of September? Then you like Earth, Wind & Fire, and if you’re in the know you’re looking forward to the band’s return to its residency on the Strip for seven dates of soul and funk celebration. With Philip Bailey, Ralph Johnson and Verdine White at the helm after more than 50 years of expressing passion and positivity through the power of music, Earth, Wind & Fire remains a formidable force in the live music industry a decade after founder Maurice White left his earthly existence. Earth, Wind & Fire started out in Maurice White’s dreams. A successful session drummer (his rolling drum fills can be heard on Fontella Bass classic “Rescue Me”), White had an aural blueprint for music that combined the best of rock, pop, soul, jazz and funk. He formed an embryonic version of Earth, Wind & Fire before recruiting his brother Verdine on bass, vocalist Bailey and percussionist Johnson. Many members would come and go, but that core remained intact through the decades. They toured relentlessly, moving from student unions to A-list music festival California Jam by 1974, but a few elements had to be in place before superstardom. CBS executive Clive Davis took an interest, producer Charles Stepney came on board and Earth, Wind & Fire starred in and had recorded a soundtrack for a film. The band predicted That’s the Way of the World would be a box-office bomb (it was!) and arranged to have the soundtrack released several months before the film. It reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Top 200 two months after its March 1975 release. That album’s lead track, “Shining Star,” has been the opening song at recent Earth, Wind & Fire concerts, which can be deep dives down memory lane for boomers and danceable discoveries for zoomers. Setlist jams such as “Let’s Groove” and “Boogie Wonderland” were inescapable during the skate rink era of the ’70s and ’80s. “After the Love Has Gone” is pop music’s greatest contribution toward healing from heartbreak, and “September” stirs memories of block parties and barbecues with a lyric that led to the 21st day of that month being unofficially regarded as Earth, Wind & Fire Day by fans. –Matt Kelemen

A Wondrous World

Rediscover an ideal destination with a variety of activities

Experiencing the Grand Canyon either was on, is on, or should be on, everyone’s bucket list. It’s a natural wonder that’s sacred to the original occupants of the lands that the Colorado River carved through until the chasm was a mile deep. President Theodore Roosevelt championed its preservation, making it a prime historical destination for American adventurers and tourists that Grand Canyon West nurtures in the present. By history, we’re talking in geologic and geographic terms dating back 6

million years. Grand Canyon West is owned and operated by the Hualapai tribe on land that has been their ancestral home for more than a millennium. Exploring the Grand Canyon from the Hualapai perspective means literally following in the footsteps of generations from among the “People of the Tall Pines.” Tall pines are in abundance on steep canyon slopes, which can be best seen from the iconic Grand Canyon Skywalk. The 10-foot-wide transparent bridge juts over the West Rim, providing some

of the most spectacular vistas in the world, and at Grand Canyon West, it can be the prelude to a helicopter tour deep beneath the West Rim, river rides in pontoons or a two-day rafting expedition led by the Hualapai River Runners. Cap off a visit with a zipline ride before making a checkmark on that bucket list, and plan on returning one day. –Matt Kelemen 5001 Diamond Bar Road, Peach Springs, Ariz., 888.868.9378 or grandcanyonwest.com

Exciting the Imagination

Long-running and iconic adults-only revue celebrates its 24th anniversary on the Las Vegas Strip The competition was fierce for Fantasy: The Strip’s Sexiest Tease on the night of its 24th anniversary and 2024 calendar release party. The topless revue was competing for the attention of attendees who could see Allegiant Stadium as they entered Luxor and vocalized loyalties to the Raiders or Packers squaring off for the second Monday Night Football game in October. More than a dozen of the show’s performers arrived early for a red carpet and photos with founder Anita Mann, who had commented on her competitive nature earlier to friends who had flown in for the celebration, explaining that it motivates her to aspire for excellence in her own work and encourage the same in her dancers. That aspiration paid off many times over at the Monday night performance, where the dancers for the evening blended classic numbers with new routines and demonstrated the right to boast of Fantasy as “The Strip’s Sexiest Tease.” Singer and emcee Lorena Peril got the crowd riled up from the get-go with her trademark wisecracks tempered with just enough raunch to make a grown man blush.

Clothes came off shortly after the cast appeared en masse to the opening number, “Let’s Get Loud.” Familiar faces such as ebullient Abby, flame-haired Gigi, statuesque Ashton, sultry Soolin and marvelous Mariah were on point all the way, with the latter three romping between the sheets to Vanity 6’s “Nasty Girl” during longtime audience favorite “Bed Fantasy.” One newer face is Caroline, who performed the silks act with an abandon and flair unlike any previous performer in the show’s history. Her skills spinning on the lengths of cord hanging from the ceiling must be seen to be believed. There was a little bit of country and a little bit of rock ’n’ roll as the topless dancers donned cowboy hats for Shania Twain’s “Man! I Feel Like a Woman” and let loose during Ike and Tina Turner’s hyper-drive version of “Proud Mary.” That 1971 song, and the energy it inspires, brings it all back home to Mann’s roots as a dancer and choreographer in the ’60s and ’70s, a story that may manifest as a memoir by the time of the 25th anniversary party. –Matt Kelemen

It’s A-Bot Time

Watch as these machines dole out damage and destruction It’s knives out! And hammers and claws! And all sorts of implements that might be deadly to humans! It’s BattleBots Destruct-A-Thon! In this incredibly exciting evening of robotic mayhem at Caesars Entertainment Studios at Horseshoe Las Vegas, you’ll find a whole cast of machines from throughout the history of the hit TV series, fighting for dominance. The matchups vary from night to night, each bot has its own backing and hype team, and trash talk before each match is common (and hilarious). Bil Dwyer and Steve Judkins take hosting

20 | 10.22.23 Las Vegas Magazine

duties, and give you all the info on the bots. Before the matches, watch highlights of each bot’s previous TV glory on screens around the arena. In that huge arena, constructed of thickened glass on all sides to keep spectators from injury, a number of pitfalls surround the floor (like enormous hammers, smacking down randomly, and saw blades emerging from the floor). Then, the machine is guided out to fighting position, and away they go, with the operators trying to flip, cut and smash the opponent. There’s a fair bit of strategy,

with robots trying to drive the others into the pitfalls. Grandstand seating stretches the length of each side of the arena, with Platinum club seating at the end, opposite the robot entrance area. You’ll have a good view no matter where you are sitting, though. There’s merch, snacks and drinks to be had, too, and it’s all family friendly. Parking is available off Flamingo Avenue. –Nina King Caesars Entertainment Studios at Horseshoe Las Vegas, ticketmaster.com

Grandeur Presented by

O

f the countless times Las Vegas has raised the bar for live entertainment, there may be no greater triumph than “O”. This October marks 25 years for the iconic Cirque du Soleil production, surpassing an astounding 11,300 performances, and bringing more than 19 million guests on a journey of love, adventure, courage, and wonder.

Across the world, many will recognize “O” for its imaginative interplay of water, fire and acrobatic marvels. From the simplest street performance to the most lavish of operas, “O” is renowned for world-class acrobats and swimmers, towering high divers, impossible aerial feats, and astounding aquatic acts. However, few may know how the 1.5-million gallon spectacle came into existence…

The Origins of “O” When Bellagio Resort & Casino was being constructed in the mid90s, the now legendary property was searching for a breakthrough show that would elevate it to the world’s most romantic destination. Inspired by the massive success of Mystère, the entrepreneurs behind Bellagio requested Cirque du Soleil to develop an aquatic-themed show that would complement its majestic fountain and water features. At that time, most Las Vegas stages were still filled with comedians, dancers, magicians, and showgirls, but visionary “O” Writer and Director, Franco Dragone, dared to steer the production in a new direction altogether. When “O” premiered on October 15, 1998, it was an entertainment revelation. “It was so new that we didn’t know if people would accept this,” says Didier Antoine, one of Dragone’s longtime collaborators and an original “O” cast member. “It wasn’t just circus, or dance, or theater… Franco combined everything together… He didn’t separate the art.” Never before had audiences witnessed swimmers, dancers, aerialists, acrobats, and musicians all performing on the same stage. Never before had seven massive hydraulic lifts been incorporated so seamlessly within a single

stage. Never before had a show merged the spirit of European opera houses with such a magnitude of aquatic acts. It was an unheralded fusion of talent, technology, and pure imagination that has inspired countless other shows and directors in the years that followed. A Vision Everlasting On the Las Vegas Strip, residencies come and go, stages are built and dismantled, and technologies shift all the time, and among this backdrop of change, there’s something beautifully timeless about “O”. According to Antoine, the magic lives on not in sweeping changes, but in the enduring vision of its late creator. “The spirit of the opening, the spirit of Franco’s creation, the motivation to carry this legacy forward… Everyone who’s been involved over the last 25 years–you can feel how much they respect [Dragone]. Even now, performers still ask me, “What was Franco’s vision?’” The palpable excitement of opening night has only grown brighter, and with so much nuance packed into every performance, it’s no wonder that guests return over and over to relive the odyssey. “It’s amazing the impact this show still has on people,” hails Antoine. “After the pandemic, many shows closed, but “O” has thrived. People come to see [the show], and for 90 minutes, they can forget everything going on in the world.”

Scan for tickets to discover the extraordinary.

@CIRQUEDUSOLEIL #OCIRQUE

Today, “O” isn’t just a jewel in the crown of Cirque du Soleil. It stands as an emblem of live entertainment itself. As this icon of entertainment celebrates 25 years of grace and grandeur, it continues drawing audiences from around the world to Las Vegas. Inspiring awe in guests of all ages, inviting curious souls on a journey through water and wonder, and building on a legacy that will captivate generations to come.

For more than a decade, Monzon, who’s been meditating since the age of 5 (“It has followed me; it’s always been who I am”), has professionally practiced

and taught yoga and meditation and “the science of awakening,” she says, learning from teachers in India. A year ago, she connected with AREA15 after it learned of her company and teachings, and so far the response to her one-hour Sacred Lounge classes has been extremely positive from both visitors and locals. “The body is meant to move, shake, dance and feel, and to do it in an immersive place with 360-degree projection mapping, lighting, with music, professional sound system and people

supporting your process—it’s like nothing Las Vegas has ever had before,” she says. Monzon’s goal with the classes and Yin City is to continually fulfill her passion. “I’m very passionate about people’s inner connections and state of minds,” she says. “Sacred Lounge leaves people excited, empowered, sometimes vulnerable, also very relaxed and more open. Something shifts. You’re more aware. Everything I do is to help people awaken into higher states of consciousness.” –Kiko Miyasato

The next Sacred Lounge event is Oct. 23. The ticket also includes the social gathering inside Sanctuary Lounge.

HaSalon builds energy with every luscious bite By Nina King When HaSalon held its soft opening in August, guests enjoyed a wonderful party, with dinner at the Mediterranean-inspired restaurant morphing into a lively party atmosphere later. And that’s the way it’s gone every

night since then, with every action upping the energy. Step into HaSalon, “powered by Eyal Shani and Shahar Segal,” and you’ll be struck by the eclectic, comfortable beauty of the space, with a bespoke collection of chairs and chandeliers and a curving bar anointed with fresh produce that sweeps around an open kitchen area, where founding chef Shani pitched in at the official grand opening in late September, a party for which all the glitterati in Vegas stepped out. The next night, Shani could once again be found

behind the sleek chef’s counter, creating some of the restaurant’s inventive dishes for a slate of grateful guests. As the “Tomato Chef” worked, he talked about the ingredients, the dishes, the methods used and the philosophy behind Las Vegas’ HaSalon. “Las Vegas is all about the will to live on instincts, to put your life in the hands

of luck,” Shani said in a press release this summer. “Nobody understands that more than HaSalon—the energy, and the food, all are mesmerizing and elevate your feelings.” At the chef’s counter (and do request these seats if you can), start with traditional focaccia, pillowy squares of crust covered in paper-thin slices of onion, tomato and pepper, perfect to dip into the “6 spicy instruments,” a variety of condiments that Shani said would “swirl your mind,” and which are perfect with the focaccia. At the grand opening,

his audience joyfully enjoyed that while the chef applied himself to other items while chatting—carefully deseeding and cutting heirloom tomatoes into colorful wedges for the aptly named “A pile of beautifully arranged tomatoes.” The menu itself is named “HaSalon Las Vegas sketch book page 19 powered by Eyal Shani and Shahar Segal” and, as

you can tell by the aforementioned dish, describes each dish literally or poetically—or both. The tai snapper carpaccio is pounded thin by the chef with a large, handheld tool. That scene plays out throughout the restaurant, with black-clad staff putting their backs (and concentration) into pounding out other carpaccio orders—the Terrifying hammer delivers herbs and flowers atop thin slices of beef, while charred beetroot carpaccio is served with crème fraîche and horseradish “snow.” Serving methods vary, from traditional plates to a presentation right atop the counter. A mountain of Parmesan falls across the desert tomato pasta, while next, a whole turbot “covered in a mountain of salt” is unveiled. The mountain is moved, and the fish deboned and dispatched. And “the best hummus plate you will ever eat” brings an enormous platter of hummus and lamb ragu. Throughout the night, scenes like that played out, and as evening waned, energy waxed, growing more partylike by the minute, helped by DJs and servers and staff dancing atop tables. “You are getting the best feeling that life can give, the magic from a night you are praying will never end, experiencing a loss of control and the freedom that feeling has,” Shani said. “Our mission, the whole reason for our existence and the whole reason that millions of people around the globe are dreaming of us, is to give happiness and make people that visit us much happier than they were before.” Before departing, dessert, please, with a coffee, and the crispy golden apple crumble, and pistachio olive oil and raspberry cake. It’s not goodbye, because we’ll be back.

Frankie Valli talks about the path that led to his new Las Vegas residency By Matt Kelemen

His touring days may be winding down, but Frankie Valli is hardly retiring. The voice that launched a parade of hits beginning with No. 1 single “Sherry” in 1962 has been well preserved and, at 89, Valli still follows his muse wherever it takes him, including the Westgate Las Vegas, where he launches his new residency with The Four Seasons this week. He got in touch with his roots for his most recent studio LP, A Touch of Jazz, a collaboration with Joey DeFrancesco that turned out to be one of the final recordings of the late organ virtuoso. “It was one of the things that I’ve done in my career that’s been most fun,” says Valli of the 2021 album. The influence of legendary jazz contralto Jimmy Scott, which carried over into recordings with the Four Seasons, was palpable. “It was where I started and what I really wanted to do because I never really wanted to be a pop singer. There was really no money, or not enough money, to make a living in jazz.” Valli’s enthusiasm for singing was spurred by boyhood trips into Manhattan to see popular performers of the

day. He was also influenced by the aural environment of Newark, N.J., where the soundtrack of the streets resounded from open windows in the days before air conditioning. “Way back in the day when people came here from Europe, they brought their culture with them,” says Valli. “And music, people were listening to opera and classical music. That’s what I basically grew up on. … My favorite singing group was the Four Freshman.” Destiny led Valli to cross paths with Bob Gaudio, the musical mastermind of the Four Seasons, who created foundations that allowed Valli’s trademark falsetto to soar. The Four Seasons dominated the charts after Elvis joined the army and before the Beatles invaded America, but Valli has made comeback after comeback in the decades since “Dawn.” Valli’s most recent appearance on the charts comes via Pitbull and singer Chesca, whose single “Te Quiero Baby” pays homage to “Can’t Take My Eyes Off

You.” That song’s inclusion in an iconic scene from 1977 film The Deer Hunter came after the Four Seasons had their last big hits in the ’70s with songs such as “December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night).” Valli maintained the legacy of the Four Seasons with regular touring ever since, but while the desire to bring music directly to fans is still there, the lure of staying in place with an extended engagement inside Westgate Las Vegas’ venerable International Showroom was an offer he could not refuse. None of this may had happened if Valli’s mother hadn’t taken her son to see Frank Sinatra at the Paramount in New York City. From there, he began frequenting one of jazz’s all-time greatest venues. “I used to go to Birdland on Sunday afternoons,” says Valli. “You could go to Birdland and sit in the bleachers for a buck. I saw some of the greatest musicians the world has ever known at Birdland. I got to see almost every big band that there was at least one time.”

Legacy Club

Check out these hot spots to eat, drink and be merry By Kiko Miyasato Circa Resort & Casino was the shining star that Las Vegas needed during 2020. The future looked bright with the opening of the new hotel-casino, the first built from the ground up in downtown since 1980. In its third year, Circa continues to wow guests with its multitude of offerings—from the multistory casino and sportsbook, behemoth pool complex that operates 365 days a year to the excellent

36 | 10.22.23 Las Vegas Magazine

offerings when it comes to food, drink and entertainment. We’ve picked three of our favorite spots for you to explore.

Besides the obvious highlights of Legacy Club—it’s on the 60th floor, has a spacious rooftop patio and gorgeous views of the valley—the lounge offers some pretty cool bonuses. If

you want a real special evening, book the Sunset Package. You get private seating around one of the fire pits on the patio, two handcrafted cocktails and a champagne toast at sunset. Legacy Club also offers those that love making and learning about cocktails a cool opportunity to do both with its Elevated Spirits Craft Cocktail Course. Guests get the chance to craft three different cocktails, learn the

history behind spirits and cocktails, learn proper cocktail-making techniques and gain knowledge on how to craft your own cocktail recipes.

This restaurant is just a cool place to hang. Project BBQ is situated right along the Fremont Street Experience and features a permanent food truck where guests can order some of the best Carolina barbecue and all the fixings. The picnic-style dining area offers high-top tables where guests can stand up and eat while enjoying all the people-watching action. For a real memorable experience, we suggest ordering Project BBQ’s gigantic Hogstravaganza Platter. (Tip: This is for a large, hungry group). The platter is delivered to your table with lit sparklers. On the platter is a whole roasted pig, Project crackling skins and chips, a whole pineapple, corn on the cob, zucchini, bell peppers, roasted potatoes, coleslaw, limes and a variety of sauces. Other good options include the whiskey steak sandwich, which layers whiskey-marinated sirloin, cheese and

Project BBQ

Project Steak sauce; and the newest addition to the menu, the Fremont fire hot chicken sandwich, on a brioche bun.

Circa Bar

While Circa Resort & Casino doesn’t technically have any resident shows at the property, there is some great entertainment. Seek out Circa Bar outside along the Fremont Street Experience. Here you’ll find some cool shows around the clock. Circa Bar is staffed with some of the best flair and dancing bartenders in the city. If you’ve never seen flair bartenders perform, you’ll want to take out your camera and hit record while they flip, toss, balance, stack and shake multiple bottles and tins at once to whip up your cocktail. When not serving up one of the frozen cocktails, the beautiful dancing bartenders get up on top of the bar and perform numbers throughout the day and night.

Two dynamic sounds take the stage as Tech N9ne and Hollywood Undead’s co-headlining tour hits the city By Em Jurbala

ometimes you really can have the best of both worlds, and if you happen to enjoy the rap rock stylings of Hollywood Undead and the iconic rap and hip-hop sounds of Tech N9ne, this is your week. The genre-spanning artists combined forces to co-headline the Hollywood and N9ne Tour, which stops at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas for a single evening this weekend. This tour comes after the massive success of their collaboration on the song “Idol,” which was released by Hollywood Undead with Tech N9ne featured in 2020. The song peaked at the No. 4 spot on the Billboard hard rock digital song sales chart and has garnered nearly 2 million views on its official music video.

Hollywood Undead

“We grew up on Tech N9ne; that was kind of our deal when we were in middle school,” Hollywood Undead lead singer Johnny 3 Tears told Las Vegas Magazine. “So, when, on not our last record but the record before, our label said if we could have one feature who would it be, we all said Tech N9ne, thinking it was a pipe dream. But he loved the

song we had done, we ended up working together, and we stayed in touch.” Clearly a worthy endeavor, the combined effort wowed listeners and laid the groundwork for what would become an unexpected yet exciting tour for fans of either or both artists. “I have no idea of who (Hollywood Undead) may bring and I’m excited

about that because that means I get to affect more people, and them as well,” Tech N9ne told Las Vegas Magazine. “It’s all about collaborating, man. That’s how we grow, so throughout my career I’ve always collaborated with other artists, and I haven’t stopped.“ Johnny 3 Tears has a lot of admiration for Tech N9ne, from the veteran rapper’s songs to his business acumen. “The stuff he does is too complex for me to understand, let alone strive to do. I just love his stuff,” he said. “He’s one of the true originals … One of the biggest aspects that I respect about him is that he did all of this on his own … He’s got his own label; he runs his own businesses. And to see someone accomplish that literally through hard work, tenacity and talent is inspiring.” If you’re a fan of either artist, or simply enjoy a night of witnessing talented people perform their inspired songs, this is for you. With each artist bringing their own unique style and sound, audiences are in for a thrilling night. Also joining Hollywood Undead and Tech N9ne on this tour, King Iso, known for hits like “Edicius” and “Self Destruct,” rounds out the experience as a special guest.
