One of the best things about Las Vegas is how its entertainment options truly span the generations. It doesn’t matter if you’re celebrating your 40th wedding anniversary or your 21st birthday—you can find something perfect for your age group. And this week’s issue of Las Vegas Magazine is a perfect reflection of that. Don’t forget to consult our pages before planning your perfect week. Who out there remembers Jubilee!, one of the longest-running shows in the Strip’s history? That Bally’s show may have come and gone, but those who remember it will be thrilled to know that Dita Von Teese, the queen of burlesque, is bringing the spirit of that show back to Horseshoe Las Vegas (formerly Bally’s) with Dita Las Vegas: A Jubilant Revue (“The Past Comes Alive,” p. 12). Who out there remembers hearing Liz Phair’s game-changing Exile in Guyville (regarded as one of the greatest albums of all time) for the first time in 1993? Well, prepare to revisit some special memories when Phair hits Virgin Hotels Las Vegas to perform that album in its entirety (“Still Resonating,” p. 38). Who out there is a fan of one of pop culture’s greatest current phenomena, Vanderpump Rules? The reality show has led to great success for matriarch Lisa Vanderpump, who’s translated that fame into thriving locations on the Strip (“The Real Deal,” p. 34). No matter your generation, it’s hard to ignore the appeal of a good cocktail, and we’ve got two great options in this week’s issue: Gatsby’s Cocktail Lounge at Resorts World Las Vegas (“A Party Never Killed Nobody,” p. 20) and Juliet Cocktail Room at The Venetian (“A Bar By Any Other Name,” p. 24). Embrace your age and your tastes—Vegas is here to accommodate them all!

The Past Comes Alive
Burlesque queen launches her ‘Jubilee!’-inspired residency on the Strip Dita Von Teese may not be able to raise the Titanic, but she comes close. Widely regarded as the reigning international queen of burlesque, Von Teese is preparing to pay the ultimate tribute to showgirl heritage when Dita Las Vegas: A Jubilant Revue makes its debut at Jubilee Theater inside Horseshoe Las Vegas. Jubilee!, as long-time Sin City aficionados know, was the long-running musical featuring topless showgirls that closed before Bally’s transformed into Horseshoe Las Vegas. Von Teese would have liked to have been a showgirl, but she fell a few inches short of being considered statuesque. Instead, she drew on her appreciation of the golden age of Hollywood and classic glamour to create a persona that lent itself well to the burgeoning burlesque industry of the ’90s. Von Teese became the face of neo-burlesque and its first icon, eventually developing touring shows such as her most recent extravaganza. For her first Vegas residency, she draws on the legacy of Jubilee! in terms of presentation and style as well as actual set pieces and costumes. The show’s centerpiece of a sinking Titanic did not make it into Dita Las Vegas, but large-scale martini glasses culled from her past revues will be onstage. Singing, dancing, rhinestones and feathers will be in abundance. The genius of designers Bob Mackie and Pete Menefee will be on full display as well. Costumes that were worn by cast members of Jubilee! will glitter again at Dita Las Vegas, although it’s likely that Von Teese’s shoes will remain the exclusive domain of Christian Louboutin. It’s a dream come true for Von Teese, as well as people with memories of Jubilee!, who hoped the show would live on in some sort of revised fashion. After some years of dormancy, the showgirl revue has been revived and is in the capable hands of Von Teese and her creative team. Once a fan of showgirl culture who saw Jubilee! from the audience, Von Teese is now center stage. –Matt Kelemen Horseshoe Las Vegas, ticketmaster.com

Last Chance
See the pop superstar’s larger-than-life show before she wraps up her residency For Katy Perry, pop music’s reigning Queen of Camp, “Waking Up in Vegas” has become much more than a hit song and set list staple. Perry is and will always be a California gurl, but her Las Vegas residency places her on a stage that’s likely not far from where her aunt once kicked up her heels as a showgirl at the Stardust Resort and Casino. That property was imploded in 2007, making way for new beginnings and the explosive success of Perry’s residency, Play, which ends its run this week. By the end of its inaugural run that launched Dec. 29, 2021, Play grossed nearly $7 million with at least 32,000 Perry fans making the pilgrimage to her royal court. Inspired by childhood memories of television and film comedies such as Pee-wee’s Playhouse, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids and Toy Story, Perry and her production team let their imaginations run wild. They were so flushed with excitement that they even created an oversized commode with a talking inhabitant. While costume changes were frequent, the arrangement of “Waking Up in Vegas” received a makeover as well. The song is jazzed up as if it were played by lounge musicians in the golden age of the Strip. The feel is as real as the live band that includes bassist Kyle Whalum. His father is Grammy-winning saxophonist Kirk Whalum, most familiar to pop music audiences for his solo on Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You.” Houston was paid tribute to during many of the show’s encores throughout last year with a rendition of “The Greatest Love of All.” The career-spanning sets included “California Gurls,” “Teenage Dream,” “Roar” and “Firework,” all realized live in a way only an entertainer with showgirl roots, dedication and discipline, and a neokitschy personal style can. KatyCats can count on making unforgettable memories during a new Vegas golden age. –Matt Kelemen

Can’t Get Enough
You won’t be disappointed at the adorable hot spot From breakfast to brunch and lunch, you’re going to find a lot to appreciate at Sadelle’s Café, an import from New York City that has been a huge hit ever since arriving here in 2019. The restaurant itself is inviting—lots of Tiffany blue highlights, warm, inviting booths and impeccably appointed tables. The waitstaff is attentive and friendly, and always willing to help you out with any questions. You’ll feel instantly welcome here, especially when you start to sip on classic cocktails like Bellinis, mimosas and Bloody Marys. Breakfast options all stress high-quality ingredients and fresh flavors. You’ll definitely want to start your experience here with a bagel (your choice between plain, sesame, everything and cinnamon raisin), as Sadelle’s is famous for them—they are produced in-house. They’re incredibly light and fluffy, a result of the amount of time spent proofing the dough. In addition to cream cheese, be sure to get all the accoutrements, from house salmon and smoked Scottish salmon, cucumbers and tomatoes to tuna salad, whitefish salad and capers. Soooo good! One of Sadelle’s biggest sellers is the avocado toast, and for good reason: Avocado is mixed with salt, pepper and lemon juice, on top of which pickled red onions and freshly sliced Fresno peppers and avocado are piled. No matter how many times you’ve had French toast, you have never tried anything like Sadelle’s version. Whole loaves of brioche are cut and dried for 24 hours. After that, the pieces are soaked in Sadelle’s signature French toast batter for another 24 hours. After being fried at a low temperature and sliced, each half is caramelized on top. If this doesn’t fit the definition of “comfort food,” we’re not sure what will. Make sure to plan a return trip for brunch or lunch. The real signature here is the fried chicken, so delicious with its accompaniment of truffle honey, coleslaw and French fries. But as with breakfast, everything on Sadelle’s menu is worth your time. –Ken Miller

A Party Never Killed Nobody Lounge takes revelers back to the Roaring ’20s with a modern twist Although it’s located right on the casino floor, Gatsby’s Cocktail Lounge is so much more than a casino bar. Trust us. The art deco-designed space gives off an air of the time period in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby, but there is a modern Vegas glitz added in. The velvety furnishings, set against the everchanging lighting design, which switches from deep purples to blues, make the space super opulent. And once the DJ starts pumping out those beats later in the evenings, the place turns into a party to remember.
20 | 10.29.23 Las Vegas Magazine
If you like showing your adventures on Instagram and TikTok, this is one of the best places to do it, because of the cocktails. And you’ll certainly want to capture the cocktails on Gatsby’s “secret menu.” To check out the menu you’ll have to inquire with a server or bartender—ask them to get the QR code to scan so you can check out the menu. A showstopper here is the Champagne Bubble Bath, served in an actual mini bathtub and mixed with The Botanist gin, Aperol, lime and pineapple juices, Monin strawberry liqueur,
rose syrup, rose cava and topped with champagne, edible rose petals and mojito-foam bubbles. If you make your way to Gatsby’s before the end of October, try the Pretty in Pink cocktail. Created in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it’s mixed with Lunazul blanco tequila, Cointreau, lime juice, agave and hibiscus syrup and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. –Kiko Miyasato Resorts World, 702.676.6013

Modern Man
Singer maintains heart and passion in Vegas shows
The third string of Keith Urban: The Las Vegas Residency dates at Planet Hollywood comes in the wake of Urban’s newly released EP, Shine, and his induction into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. Urban shared the stage with Eric Church and Dolly Parton before an all-star audience of industry peers in Nashville, where a week prior he paid tribute to the late Ronnie Milsap along with Ricky Skaggs, Los Lonely Boys and Kelly Clarkson before the “Smoky Mountain Rain” singer’s final concert.
Courtesy photo
Urban covered “Out Where the Bright Lights Are Glowing,” a song Milsap sung about country singer Jim Reeves. Whether intentional or not, three artists who achieved crossover success due to arrangements were represented in one song: Reeves expanded the range of instruments drawn on in country music; Milsap brought passionate piano playing front and center in his sound; and Urban’s nuanced embracing of trends in recording technology helped break down barriers between pop and country.
That’s perhaps why Urban is one of the few male artists capable of maintaining a Las Vegas residency (and indeed, he has been packing the house). His career-spanning Bakkt Theater concerts find Urban very much in his prime as he testifies in 2021 single “Wild Hearts”: “I’m here to tell you anything can happen in this life/ If you got that heart and the passion and a God-lit fire inside.” –Matt Kelemen

Oak and Orange
The newly opened lounge hits the sweet spot Five words you’ll utter as you walk through the doors of Juliet Cocktail Room at The Venetian: “Wow, this place is gorgeous.” Your eyes immediately go to the back wall, where a mirrored, goldhued bar showcases spirits that line shelves and retro bar stools beckon drinkers to take a seat. The interior design is Victorian-inspired opulence mixed with a balanced combination of modern and vintage pieces throughout the space, which includes a sizable main room and an intimate back room that gives off private library vibes. Equally visually enticing are Juliet Cocktail Room’s libations. “We put so much emphasis and thought into the design and decor of the space that we knew we needed to continue that theme into our cocktail program,” said Ryan Labbe, owner of Juliet Cocktail Room. “All of our glassware was handpicked and vetted by our team to ensure that it ‘gives a show!’ The cocktails bring energy to the room, and we love that our guests take photos and share. We want it to be part of the overall experience.” Eyes do surely dart around the room any time one of Juliet’s

specialty cocktails are brought to a table. The glassware is impressive, and the garnishes add the extra flair. But is it only about the looks? Absolutely not; these cocktails are tasteworthy. Two shining stars include the Oak and Orange. “The Oak and Orange is a spin on a Moscow mule, served in a copper mug

And the added ingredients to make up the recipes pique interest; flavors include rosemary, passion fruit purée, cinnamon syrup and fresh pear juice to Black Bay leaf syrup, fresh honeydew, cucumber and brown butter syrup. Zadie suggests trying The Cork and Thorn, “a Middle Eastern-inspired libation served in a gold champagne flute with flat rosé, floral notes, rose water and rose syrup, fresh fig and club soda. It is crisp, refreshing and beautiful. “The Green with Envy was inspired by a Starbucks matcha latte. I loved it so much that I thought, ‘Why not make it a cocktail?’ We played around with the green tea matcha, paired with rum, coconut and pandan leaf syrup and it’s abso-
lutely delicious.” Once your cocktail craving is answered, Juliet Cocktail Room rounds out the experience with entertainment. “(There are) live pianists with talented and glamorous singers, live DJs and so much more,” said Labbe. “The ambience is enjoyable and ideal for relaxing with a nice cocktail.” Some nights, you might see dueling piano players who seem to get the whole lounge in on the music and singing. “Juliet Cocktail Room has something to offer everyone for a memorable night out on the Strip …,” said Labbe. “We have guests who are young and old, and from all walks of life who enjoy the sense of nostalgia Juliet provides—an ode to what lounges once were.” –Kiko Miyasato

The taste is tart yet creamy with an egg finish ... topped with floral garnish.” Throughout the menu, you’ll find cocktails that use a broad spectrum of spirits from gin, bourbon and whiskey to mezcal, tequila

From behind the bar to running the bar More than a decade ago, Chuck Nguyen, beverage manager for The Lounge at Harrah’s Las Vegas, moved to Las Vegas. “I wanted to come out to the best of the best,” he says. “Vegas is obviously the trendsetter for clubs and bars.” Nguyen spent more than five years bartending in Michigan before deciding he needed to bring his skill set behind the bar to the world’s mecca for bartenders. And since then, Nguyen has bartended at the city’s most famous nightclubs and dayclubs, including Tao

Beach at The Venetian, 1OAK at The Mirage, Jewel at Aria and Omnia at Caesars Palace (where he still currently bartends on the weekends). Earlier this year, after working for eight years as a bartender at Influence, The Pool at The Linq, Nguyen caught wind that The Linq’s sister property, Harrah’s Las Vegas, was looking for a manager to run its new hot spot, The Lounge. “I jumped at the chance to continue my growth and move up in the company,” he says. “it’s a very different job, I’ve learned. … The biggest
difference is who I’m focused on. As a bartender, you’re focused more on the guest. As a manager, that’s still a goal, but my main priority is my employees, my team.” Two decades into the industry, Nguyen isn’t done moving up the ladder. His ultimate goal? To open his own bar or nightclub in Vegas. “I would like to think this is just the beginning. I couldn’t learn as much as I’ve learned without coming here to Vegas. If I want to be part of the best, I have to learn from the best.” –Kiko Miyasato

True Food Kitchen introduces plenty of new menu twists It’s time to put on those cardigans and indulge in autumnal delights—like new menu items, brunch and cocktails at True Food Kitchen. The trendy restaurant has two locations in Las Vegas, including one in The Forum Shops at Caesars, where you’ll also find a chill bar nearby. True Food Kitchen, which advocates a healthier approach to dining, recently announced an all-new menu for brunch (available Saturdays and Sundays), and it’s tremendous. The new brunch cocktails include the Cinnamon Toastini, with Woodford Reserve, St. George Pear Spiced, cinnamon cereal milk and maple, and the Berry Cerealtini, with Prairie organic vodka, Giffard Vanille de Madagascar liqueur and berry cereal milk. Mimosas are available, as is a Bloody Mary option, but True Food Kitchen’s Clear Mary subs in tomato water and Aleppo for a twist on the savory fave.

Smoke Show Old Fashioned
And although you might be tempted to go straight for the entrée, do not. First indulge in the Brunch Tower, where avocado toast, smoked salmon toast, yogurt parfait, lemon-blueberry muffins, quiche bites and a wonderful apple crumble coffee cake are presented level by level. Once the entrées arrive, dig into huevos rancheros, made with pasture-raised fried eggs, Anasazi beans, queso and ranchero sauce on a corn tortilla; that sauce will make you consider ordering another one.
Hawaiian fried rice is another gem, with quinoa brown rice, pineapple, pickled red onions, pineapple, uncured ham and fried eggs. If you have returned to a True Food Kitchen before and were disappointed because your favorite dish wasn't available, take heart. The restaurant group sources seasonal items, so you you’ll find roasted Brussels sprouts with roasted mushrooms, marinated peppers, lime and a soy-ginger glaze, something

beef with such trimmings as herb-roasted fingerling potato, honey-roasted carrots and a mushroom jus. Should you happen upon True Food Kitchen in between meals and want to concentrate on cocktails, that menu is really fun. The Cowboy Jam is one of the most unusual, with High West double rye, grapefruit and a Concord grape reduction. And, yes, it does show the color and flavor of grape jelly, but in a good way. The Smoke Show Old Fashioned is a nice version of the classic, featuring High West double rye, honey syrup and bitters, topped off with hickory smoke. Two zero-proof mocktails join the fun: the What’s Up Doc?!, which combines Clean & Co. tequila, carrot, orange, jalapeño and mint; and the Non-Collins, with Seedlip Spice 94, blood orange, pomegranate and lime. Good to know you can indulge with abandon, right?

ABOUT REAL BODIES Real Bodies is an inside look at all of our bodies’ systems and how they work. Not only does it walk through complex mechanisms like breathing
and eating, but it also explores qualities of humanity, including love, thought, and what eventually becomes of us in death. ABOUT DINO SAFARI: A WALK THRU ADVENTURE Step into an immersive, prehistoric world at Dino Safari, where you’ll be greeted by animatronic dinosaurs, learn about cutting edge research, experience real fossils, and enjoy a tailor-made virtual reality experience of Pangea. ABOUT DISCOVERING KING TUT’S TOMB More than 100 years ago, one of the most incredible archeological discoveries of our time happened when Howard Carter found the lost tomb of Tutankhamun. This exhibit allows guests to walk in Carter’s shoes through the remarkable discovery, the findings within, and the wonders of ancient Egypt.
ASTE RO I D
Just like its namesake, this cocktail is hard-hitting and complex. Mezcal is the primary spirit, mixed with a bittersweet orange red aperitivo, yellow chartreuse liqueur, and fresh squeezed lime juice. It’s incredibly flavorful and each sip will leave you wanting more.
THE CABINET OF CURIOSITIES SEASONAL COCKTAIL MENU With such a robust cocktail program and a rotating menu of offerings, don’t miss the featured seasonal cocktails. Currently, the Cabinet of Curiosities and its speakeasy, The Lock, are offering a Pumpkin Spice Martini that hits on all the cozy flavors of fall.
PR E H I STO R I C PU N C H
Featuring Malibu Rum, Plantation Rum, and Blue Curacao, this punch will transport you to the tropics—or a balmy, prehistoric version of the tropics. Not only is the presentation of this cocktail aesthetically stunning, but it’s also as flavorful and easy-sipping as it comes.

Everybody knows Bill Maher. We know his face, we know his style, and we know his stance on most social subjects, because he’s been able to share those opinions through two groundbreaking TV shows over the course of his career. But before Maher became one of the most prominent commentators across the country, he was a stand-up comedian, and he still is. He’s back at his new home in Las Vegas at MGM Grand on Nov. 3-4, and he’s ready to entertain. You performed at the Mirage Theatre for years and recently made the move to the David Copperfield Theater at MGM Grand. How’s that venue change treating you so far? I love it. I’ve just loved playing Vegas over the last decade, especially as someone who first played there as a 26-yearold comedian opening for Diana Ross at Caesars Palace back when Vegas was way less fun than it is now. And the crowd was not as hip. When you draw a hip crowd in Vegas, it’s hipper than anywhere else, and I get a lot of locals. It’s always a favorite place to play.

Have you stumbled upon any backstage secrets or rummaged through Copperfield’s stuff? (Laughs.) No, nothing like that. But another thing that’s so different is when I first played Vegas, you couldn’t swear. I was the opening act—I had to do 20 minutes, and when they said 20, they meant 20. You don’t do 21, because you’re keeping people out of the casino, so you might get a lecture from a guy who’s a little scary. Now if you want to do 90 minutes, you do 90 minutes. If these people are laughing, keep it going, give ’em a show. And it’s completely free-form. You’ve been doing TV for a long time now, but you’ve been doing stand-up even longer. How have Politically Incorrect and Real Time influenced or changed the way you approach writing and performing comedy in the stand-up world? I think it’s the other way around. I think stand-up informs the show. I feel like I have a much better understanding of the country than a lot of people who are just commentators on TV, sitting in

a studio in New York or D.C. They don’t see the country. They live in bubbles. Everyone is in a bubble these days … where someone is keeping information out because they don’t think the audience wants to hear it. I don’t play that game, never have, and I’ve lost some fans because of that but that’s fine. We’re going to have fun and make fun of both sides, because both sides deserve it. Is there one particular issue or idea that people expect you to address onstage, but you’re just kind of over it and ready to move on? Religion. There’s a little religious commentary in my show, but that’s definitely something I’ve covered. I made a docu-comedy about it. For a long time, I was the only one—and probably still—the only out atheist on TV. It’s a subject that lends itself to comedy, but if there’s one subject I probably address less than I used to, it’s that. Are Las Vegas comedy audiences similar to other cities’, or is it a unique place to perform? It’s not unique, but it is a very hip crowd, especially if you get a lot of locals that live in Las Vegas. Other cities can be … more sensitive. But I want everybody, because we have to learn to sit together with people we don’t agree with. The best part of my act these days is that the crowd is so politically mixed. Conservatives can laugh at Trump jokes and liberals can laugh when we make fun of “woke” nonsense. That’s a model of what our country has to be, because it’s way too partisan. I don’t have a team and I don’t want a team.

Lisa Vanderpump’s venues are a highlight on the Strip Photo by
has to have been a whirlwind for Lisa Vanderpump in the last few years. Not only was the British-born entrepreneur a huge part of the Bravo television series The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, which led to multiple other television projects, including the recent Vanderpump Villa on Hulu, she and husband Ken Todd opened multiple restaurants in their expanding empire. That included two huge successes in Las Vegas, first Vanderpump Cocktail Garden at Caesars Palace, followed by Vanderpump à Paris at Paris Las Vegas. The first venture was very well received in 2019, with fans of her shows lining up for a chance to hang out in the gorgeous patio setting draped in greenery and taste the signature cocktails and light menu she created. That demand lives on today, with Vanderpump Cocktail Garden featuring such whimsically named items such as brunch’s Matcha Matcha Man, with Vanderpump vodka, and the Checkmate Bitch, with Stoli Hit vodka and Chacho jalapeño, and the Vanderpump rosé cake, infused with rosé and topped with strawberry buttercream. Vanderpump wines are also available, including her own, the French Côtes de Provence rosé, along with shareable dishes. Vanderpump’s French connection is crystal-clear at Paris Las Vegas, where the gorgeous Vanderpump à Paris opened in 2022. “We had such an incredible time living in France for close to 10 years, so we are inextricably tied to the country,” said Vanderpump just prior to the opening. “You’ll find our love for French wine, delicious French food, and our fascination with French culture peppered throughout Vanderpump à Paris.” At grand-opening events, Vanderpump spoke of her respect for longtime design partner Nick Alain and the work that went into the design of Vanderpump à Paris— eclectic, lavish décor including a bar stretching the length of the restaurant, whimsical bronze umbrellas throughout, rooms decorated with chandeliers, plush velvet art nouveau banquettes, and lots of greenery, creating a delicious vista. The French-inspired menu conveys a sense of whimsy in its cocktails and food. Guests here rave about the Birdcage aux Fromages, which presents multiple cheese selections in a fancy birdcage. Pot pie is available in three choices (caviar bites, French onion mac and cheese), and Impossible mini sliders are wrapped in vegan puff pastry. And if visiting Vanderpump’s Vegas venues wasn’t enough, check out where you’ll find Vanderpump next! If you are headed to BravoCon at Caesars Forum (Nov. 3-5), Vanderpump is scheduled to be there! And if you’ll be back for Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix (Nov. 16-18), Vanderpump à Paris will host A Very Vanderpump Brunch on Nov. 17, curated by the star and featuring the signature rosé, plus a special appearance by the lady herself.

Mac King shares advice on getting started in the art of illusion By Matt Kelemen
Some magicians closely guard their secrets. Others, when they are not performing, freely dispense advice to aspiring illusionists and seekers of sleight-of-hand knowledge. Mac King falls squarely in the latter, if only for the long-running comic strip Magic-in-a-Minute he created with his illustrator cousin Bill. The amount of times young people have asked King how to get started in the craft, after seeing one of his afternoon performances of The Mac King Comedy Magic Show at Excalibur, is inestimable (and he can’t answer them comprehensively in 30 seconds of meet-and-greet). King himself was literally grandfathered in, with both of his grandfathers having magical skills. “They knew some tricks, and my mom’s dad, in particular, had some magic books at his house,” says King in an exclusive interview with Las Vegas Magazine. Both grandfathers were in sales and traveled for work. “They used magic as icebreakers to meet people or make themselves look interesting.” If King had to identify one trick as ground zero for his interest, it would be his dad’s dad breaking a match, then “reconstructing”
it beneath a handkerchief. It was also the first trick King learned step-bystep, which fully ignited his passion. King’s own Mac King’s Magic in a Minute Great Big Ol’ Book-O-Magic is due for a revision, but it can be found used on Amazon as well. King cites benefits of learning magic such as sharpened focus and problem-solving skills. Practice improves muscle memory, while performing builds confidence in public speaking. Ultimately, it led King to a career and meeting his future wife. He performed a trick involving pulling a card from his pants that he still performs today, and she was smitten, long before he became the plaid-clad member of Las Vegas’ resident magicians. Practicing with cards as often as possible, even if they don’t ultimately become part of an

act, is good early stage training. King usually has a pack within reach that he can play with while engaging in activities that leave his hands free. “I’ve got decks of cards all over my house,” he says. “I’m shuffling or doing moves. I’m not even thinking about it.” While King would never give away another magician’s secrets, his own history of disclosures dates back to the ’90s, when he appeared on television specials for NBC titled The World’s Greatest Magic. King performed tricks before commercial breaks, then demonstrated how they worked when he returned. “Magicians kind of divide the way they talk about magic into effect— that’s what the trick looks like to the audience—and the method. That’s the secret stuff that leads to the effect,” says King, before categorizing effects. “There’s vanish. There’s change. Mutilated and restored. There’s levitation. Any of those effects you can do with a deck of cards.” While King doesn’t mind his tricks winding up in the public domain, his skills of making goldfish and Fig Newtons appear remain unsurpassed. His folksy presence and family-friendly magic blend together in a persona that, unlike his tricks, can't be copied.
Liz Phair revisits an all-time classic in her Las Vegas show Decades after its release, Liz Phair’s 1993 stunning debut album, Exile in Guyville, continues to be recognized as one of the best rock albums out there, even holding a spot on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list. Phair’s current tour celebrating the record’s 30th anniversary makes a one-night stop at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas this week, and the songstress chatted with Las Vegas Magazine ahead of her performance.

Well, I’m really excited just to be back in the area. If I get a chance, I might head out to Red Rock, if I get, like, a couple hours. I have family that’s lived there for a long time, so I’m excited to be back.
Please visit lasvegasmagazine.com for more of this interview.
Well, one of the interesting things is my voice has actually gotten higher as I’ve gotten older. It doesn’t speak very highly of my lifestyle back then, but I think I went out to bars and drank and smoked a lot more. And so, one of the things is switching the registers and finding out where my voice will really sit with it. That’s one thing, and then also getting, this time around, the chance to work with the renowned theater director Kevin Newbury to sort of stage it a bit and deepen the audience experience of the love story in that album.
Yes! I fell in love with his work when I saw Courtney Love and Todd Almond in Kansas City Choir Boy.

I think it stemmed from me wanting to illuminate a little further the relationship that album has with the Exile on Main St. Rolling Stones album. Like the way I had used Mick (Jagger)’s lyrics as like an avatar for the rock star locally that I had a crush on. So, I asked (Newbury) if we could bring that out, but then what they came back with just blew me out of the water … One of the people working with us is Natalie Frank, who’s a very expressive, figurative painter, and it’s as if they found their own narrative, the human story of loneliness and longing and love in young adulthood. You know, like that weird interim between childhood and adulthood.
Now that I’ve gotten deeper into seeing how Kevin’s staging this, they’re just archetypal stories. There’s just something about Guyville that speaks to a lot of people about trying to set off on your own and being afraid but determined. And it’s action-packed ... it’s just got that vibe that I think a lot of people relate to.

INTO OMEGA MART THE MIND-BENDING WORLD OF LAS VEGAS’ MEOW WOLF OUTPOST
THE EXPERIENCE
Described as “America’s most exceptional grocery store,” walking into Omega Mart is the beginning of an adventure. “At Meow Wolf, we like to introduce visitors to our permanent exhibitions in a way that’s familiar, whether that be a seemingly average neighborhood home—as with the House of Eternal Return in Santa Fe— or a grocery store like we have with Omega Mart,” Olsen said. “From there, we present opportunities to expand one’s way of thinking, and new ways to experience otherwise average tasks and processes through the exploration of creative narratives.” As soon as you drop into Omega Mart, other exhibits come into focus, with four main anchor spaces in the exhibit.
+
Putting your finger on Meow Wolf’s Omega Mart is nearly impossible. It’s a transportive, maximalist art installation, rooted in the foundation of a dense, explorative narrative. It’s a place to play and a place to study. It’s the anchor experience at Area15 and Meow Wolf’s largest installation to date, totaling 52,000 square feet. Omega Mart’s art director, Spencer Olsen, describes it as “a psychedelic sci-fi mystery that invites you to investigate as an in-world participant … or a big, fun, explorable art exhibit!” It’s utopian and somewhat dystopian. It’s an experience that refuses to be pinned down—one in which you’re allowed to stumble into a world that’s adjacent to yours, but also lightyears away. Here’s a topline look at the multidimensional environments that beg to be explored, and then explored again.
THE STORY
As you travel through Omega Mart, a rich and complex narrative begins to develop using audio, video and print media. The timeline of the story goes back hundreds of thousands of years, and breadcrumbs are scattered throughout the exhibit for visitors to uncover. Olsen recommends taking notes. “Everything is there for a reason, and we tried to add a lot of continuity so you can learn about something you find in one location elsewhere as you explore. If you think something might be a clue, take a picture.”
Pro tip: Ask an Omega Mart employee about the VIP Package to enhance your experience.
C RE ATED A ND PRES ENTED BY MEOW WO LF Omega Mart is stocked with fun and uncommon products to explore— all with the uncanny ability to fulfill shoppers’ desires.
IS IT SIMILAR TO THE HOUSE OF ETERNAL RETURN IN SANTA FE AND CONVERGENCE STATION IN DENVER? Yes and no, but you’ll have to dive in to find out. “For the narrative deep divers, there are similarities,” Olsen said. “They are completely different artistically and experientially, but there is an underlying sub-fiction in stories about groups and entities with the ability to travel between worlds. There will be more revealed around these relationships between the stories in Denver and other future exhibits.”

SPACES WITHIN SPACES DRAMCORP OFFICES
Dramcorp is the parent company to Omega Mart, and as you’ll soon find out, it’s hiding a secret.
Within each anchor space, there is an everunfolding cast of unique experiences, and choosing a favorite may be impossible. “It’s hard to pick one [favorite experience], so I’ll pick some distinct ones,” Olsen said. “Pulse, by Claudia Bueno, achieves something remarkable. I’ve heard someone describe it as ‘healing,’ which is as good of an experience as I can think of. Uploaded Ghosts, by Stephen Hendee, with musical collaboration by Beach House, feels like the artistic and emotional summit of the show,” Olsen said.
