No matter how old you are, odds are you remember your first car. Mine was a beige 1971 Plymouth Duster with a Slant Six engine and less than 50,000 miles on it. It was, and remains, one of the best automobiles I’ve ever owned, nearly problem-free and soooo fun to drive. I’ve since owned countless other vehicles, but I’ll never forget that car. Odds are most of you reading this issue have similar stories to tell. And this week, you can revisit some of those memories! Mecum Auctions brings its enormous inventory of automobiles, motorcycles and much more to the Las Vegas Convention Center (“Something For Everyone,” p. 32). If you’re a fan of cars and Americana, it doesn’t get better than this. That’s only the beginning of the fun in store in Las Vegas this week. Iconic rocker Rod Stewart returns to his residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace (“A Knight’s Work,” p. 42), comedian ventriloquist Jeff Dunham returns to more packed houses at the Bakkt Theater at Planet Hollywood (“Multiple Personalities,” p. 18), Penn & Teller celebrate 30 years in Las Vegas this year and continue to change up their inimitable show (“Memorable Magicians,” p. 14), and America’s Got Talent Presents SUPERSTARS Live remains one of the Strip’s best variety shows (“Now, That’s Entertainment,” p. 12). And we’ve got an extra-special treat this week: A look at one of the most luxurious penthouse suites you’re ever likely to see. Associate editor Kiko Miyasato takes you on a tour of the Markus Klinko Icons Sky Villa at Westgate Las Vegas, where Elvis Presley stayed during his legendary run at that property when it was called The International (“The Suite Life,” p. 34). This week is a perfect time to revisit favorite memories—and make some new ones.

Now, That’s Entertainment This Vegas version of a popular reality TV competition lets every cast member shine

Something unusual happened at the 6 p.m. show of America’s Got Talent Presents SUPERSTARS Live on the third Wednesday in October ... but more on that later. The pipeline of talent that NBC and Simon Cowell have connected to the Strip means the best of the best who made it from AGT auditions to finals to fandom arrive in Las Vegas to contribute. Whether they will become the next Strip headliner à la Terry Fator, Shin Lim or Tape Face may depend on how they go over with the audiences at SUPERSTARS, now hosted by comedian Jordan Conley. With his entrance preceded by video welcomes from Howie Mandel, Heidi Klum and Cowell, Conley launched into a presentation of acts that amount to a modern version of vaudeville. Light Balance is a natural choice to open the show and get things in motion. The fiber optic-enhanced dance crew reflects the neon energy of Las Vegas, warming things up for the acrobatic endeavors of Duo Transcend, a Las Vegas-based couple whose act is alternatingly nail-biting and romantic. Rounding out the acrobatics is self-taught Aidan Bryant, who always stops the show. Celia Munoz takes ventriloquism to a new level by favoring speech-impeding props over speaking through dummies. She did speak through Conley, though, in an operatic bit that demanded quite a bit of focus on the comedian’s part. Focus is the foundation of The Silhouettes’ act, an abstract shadow play that requires a high level of imagination to create, and coordination to pull off. Same for The Pack Drumline, a percussion ensemble whose choreography led them through the audience in the most adrenalizing part of the show. Rapping magician Mervant Vera took audience participation to a new level with a group shuffling of placards containing ingredients he pulled at random to create a freestyle flow lyric. The most intriguing act may have been the Human Fountains. The trio pays tribute to waterjet attractions by streaming fluid from their mouths, each other’s mouths and, on this occasion, into the mouth of a consenting audience member. –Matt Kelemen Luxor, 702.262.4400

Memorable Magicians

Iconic headliners perform sorcery in ways you won’t soon forget It’s hard to remember a time when Penn Jillette and Teller weren’t inextricably linked to Las Vegas; they’ll be celebrating 30 years here this year, most of it at their current property. All told, Penn & Teller have been at it for nearly 50 years total, and a big part of their success is that they’ve never rested on laurels, never phoned it in (well, sorta ... more on that later). And a recent show illustrated just how committed they are to that philosophy. As Jillette said at the outset, it doesn’t matter if the last show you attended was last year, last month or last week—you’re going to see something different. Not that they haven’t kept in some quintessential moments over the years—first and foremost the show’s intro, in which pianist Mike Jones plays smooth, relaxing jazz while Jillette plays bass (he departs shortly before showtime, with Jones joking to the audience that his bass player apparently has another job somewhere). But otherwise, Penn & Teller constantly keep their audiences guessing at what’s coming next. At one performance, they placed a large jar of jelly beans onstage, asking audience members by way of large signs to guess how many it contained before the show started. The “winner” of this contest got the jar—and the privilege of doling out a few jelly beans to every single audience volunteer as they went back to their seat. And, as referenced earlier, Penn & Teller take on both the notion of “phoning it in” (with Jillette onstage as a suit hanging on a rack and a monitor above it with his face) and “a needle in a haystack” (where you’ll learn more about different types of needles than you ever cared to). Because there’s no notion that Penn & Teller are timid to attack. The stage is like a laboratory—which would make them mad scientists, and us their morethan-willing test subjects. –Ken Miller

Life Is Just a Fantasy

Rocker brings a path in entertainment to Las Vegas Aldo Nova had the right song at the right time when nascent music video channel MTV placed what would become his signature song, “Fantasy,” from his self-titled 1982 album, into heavy rotation. The Canadian rocker invested $15,000 that mostly paid for a laser effect that allowed him to blast his way into a concert venue and launch into the track’s descending lead riff that sounded like Led Zeppelin’s “Dazed and Confused” sped up and set against a punchy power chord progression. Nova’s sound and cocky stage presence predated the high-haired hard rock scene that rose throughout the ’80s, but after three albums and MTV exposure for “Ball and Chain” and “Monkey on Your Back,” he rejected label pressure to alter his sound and set aside his recording career. It was probably the best move he could have made, leading to songwriting credits for Jon Bon Jovi, Faith Hill and Celine Dion. Producing for Dion led to a Grammy in recognition of his work on her 1996 album Falling into You. Nova has followed his own muse since, releasing a 10-song EP of material from his dream project, The Life and Times of Eddie Gage, last year and launching his first tour in 32 years this year. He’s in fine voice and looks to be in great shape, giving that early MTV generation a rare chance to come out and jam along to “Fantasy” in air guitar live. –Matt Kelemen Golden Nugget, 8 p.m. Nov. 10, starts at $41 plus tax & fee. ticketmaster.com

Multiple Personalities

Long-time favorite ventriloquist brings his hilarious cast of characters back to the Strip What drives a person to become a professional ventriloquist? To understand superstar voice thrower Jeff Dunham, it helps to know his habits, his tastes and his consumer choices. He owns a 1988 Yugo, for example. The make is considered one of the worst cars ever produced, but Dunham recognizes its value both to auto history and his collection. He’s not about to let car culture fully cancel the Yugoslavia’s “good value” export. Dunham has never been one to alter his point of view in acquiescence to cultural currents. The title of his Still Not Canceled Tour is a nod to his commitment to sticking to his guns. If anyone is offended that he speaks through a cast of characters that includes an anthropomorphic jalapeño, a deceased foreign national and President Biden, he can cope. Words may come out of their mouths that draw criticism or public ire, but Dunham is fully supportive of his inner circle. To be clear, it’s not actually Dunham speaking through an effigy of the POTUS. It’s his right-hand man Walter, who already had a resemblance to the 46th president and reluctantly takes on the role. Walter previously worked up an impression of the 45th president, and at one point played both politicians simultaneously in a debate. He may be a curmudgeon, but when he commits, it’s difficult to discern mannequin from man. It’s Dunham who gets the fame, the fortune, the star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame. Dunham gets credit for breaking records for ticket sales. He’s been consistent, but he hasn’t oversaturated himself. He has political beliefs that inform his comedy, but he’s not hostile or transgressive. Walter may seem hostile at times, but he’s just cranky from travel. Endearing Peanut enjoys seeing the world on tour and brings a softer energy to the stage. Bubba J, a survivor of tornado-prone trailer parks, brings a NASCAR vibe. And what more can be said about José Jalapeño on a Stick and Achmed the Dead Terrorist that the names don’t imply? –Matt Kelemen

Restaurant has a new look and an intriguing menu One of the most enjoyable Mexican restaurants on the Las Vegas Strip just improved the experience! El Segundo Sol, which has indoor and outdoor dining—with ample views of Las Vegas Boulevard—recently underwent a renovation to theme the space to reflect the vibe of Tulum, Mexico. In addition to warm woods, foliage and basket-shaped lighting, the main dining room is lined with more than 100 specialty tequilas—you can literally reach out and touch them! It’s an ultra-cool space to chill with friends and family.

As you can guess, the margarita selection here is stellar, including both on-the-rocks and frozen options. On-the-rocks highlights include prickly pear, made with Sauza Hornitos reposado and prickly pear juice, and the pepino serrano, blended with Milagro silver, cucumber and serrano pepper. You’ll probably want some chips and salsa to start, but other great accompaniments to those chips include fresh-made guacamole, spiced to your taste, and black bean dip, given a kick here with duck fat and chorizo. There

are plenty of splendid appetizers, but you’ll definitely want to try the charred octopus and potatoes, so flavorful with chimichurri and garlic aioli. Entrées accommodate carnivores (pork carnitas with pickled red onion) and vegans (tacos with grilled zucchini and gold squash, roasted cauliflower and asparagus). And coconut flan is a perfect, light dessert to send you out the door with a smile. –Ken Miller FSLV—Fashion Show Las Vegas, 702.258.1211

Kick Up Those Cowboy Boots Country-western hot spot offers bull riding, line dancing and live music Matt West, director of restaurants at Treasure Island, said it best about Gilley’s: “Gilley’s is just an awesome country bar experience. I don’t think you realize you’re in Vegas, even though we’re right on the Las Vegas Strip. It’s an absolute fun, country vibe. I love the line dancing and the live music.” Stepping through the doors, guests are immersed into a honkytonk world with Nashville-inspired décor, delicious barbecue and Southern eats, live music, flowing cocktails and the Gilley’s Girls. Families can dine in the restaurant portion—with seating right along Las Vegas Boulevard South—

and dig into Gilley’s eats like brisket, ribs and pulled pork, all smoked in-house over mesquite wood. (West suggests ordering the famous mac and cheese, and tater tots, too!) But come 9 p.m., Gilley’s becomes a hot spot for 21-and-over nightlife fun. Inside the saloon area, settle into one of the fun saddle seats or take a turn around the dance floor as live bands take the stage. If you’re not an experienced dancer, don’t fret— Gilley’s provides free line dancing lessons for novice and expert line dancers alike. “Our dance instructor—she works her magic and she’ll have everyone that was sitting in the saloon out on the dance floor

and working through a couple of songs in no time,” West said. And there’s nothing better than hitting the wood dance floor to live country bands. On Monday nights, Vegas’ popular country music radio station, 107.9 Coyote Country, broadcasts live from the saloon with music starting at 8 p.m. For a more stripped-down, laid-back live music setting, visit Gilley’s for its Home Grown Sundays with Steve Sturgis & The Riflemen; and beginning at 5 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, enjoy food and live bluegrass bands during Gilley’s popular Bluegrass & BBQ experience. It’s hard to miss the famous Gilley’s Girls, who often join patrons on the dance floor during the line dancing lessons, or when they take their own a turn on the dance floor for a little choreographed number. You’ll also see some of the Gilley’s Girls, dressed in bikinis, black chaps and cowboy hats, take a turn riding the famous Gilley’s bull, and when they’re not up there yeehawing, they’re serving the saloon’s tasty specialty cocktails. West suggests three libations to whet your whistle, beginning with one of the Lonestar Lemonades like

the Blueberry Lemonade. The summer sip is a refreshing mix of Stoli Blueberi vodka, New Amsterdam Pink Whitney vodka, fresh blueberries and a splash of lemonade. Under the All Time Favorite Country Cocktails portion of the menu, try the Country Girl Mojito with Bacardi Pineapple rum, fresh mint, pineapple juice, agave nectar, fresh lime juice and Sierra Mist soft drink. Josh Wolf

Comedian finds a home at Jimmy Kimmel’s Comedy Club Josh Wolf recently reminisced about how he fell in love with stand-up comedy. “The first time I got onstage, I was 15 years old,” he said. “I had seen stand-up on TV and I was just fascinated by it. I had found an open mic in the town next to mine, at a coffee shop. My mom and dad drove me, they sat in the front row. … The audience actually laughed and I was like, ‘Ah man, this is what I want to do.’” More than 35 years later, Wolf’s love of comedy has brought him success in TV, stage and radio. Currently, you can

see him every Monday at 7:30 p.m., hosting his own comedy show The Fantastical Jamboree at Jimmy Kimmel’s Comedy Club at The Linq Promenade. Wolf’s show is a mix of storytelling, comedy and music (he sings and plays the guitar). “I make it Vegas-y,” he said. “It’s different every time. ” While he’s toured all over the country performing stand-up, Wolf has a fondness for his ongoing Vegas gig. “I love the variety of people—Vegas provides people from the world,” he said. “I love this particular stage; I like the size and shape and

height, a lot. And Kimmel, his name is trusted for being funny, so people come in here and know it’ll be a good show.” It’s all about family when Wolf isn’t onstage. He has a successful podcast with his son (who participates in his Vegas shows occasionally) and enjoys time with his wife. And he loves that he can live and work in Vegas. “I’m having more fun, I have more energy, I’m an older gentleman, but I don’t feel like I’ve lost any desire for comedy, and I feel so grateful to be here right now in this moment doing what I do.” –Kiko Miyasato

For exquisite Italian food, head up to Vetri Cucina By Nina King Vetri Cucina at Palms was at a high when it closed in 2020, along with the property, during the pandemic, with the venue on the 56th floor drawing a capacity crowd every night. Disappointment was high when Palms and Vetri Cucina remained shuttered—and many a foodie rejoiced when the Italian restaurant reopened along with the resort, in 2022. The restaurant, from Philadelphia’s James Beard winner Marc Vetri, brought back many favorites to its carefully curated

menu, with shareable dishes and small plates, as well as an extensive wine menu. When you arrive, stop in the bar and grab a cocktail like the Aperol spritz or a Negroni, which are also featured on the restaurant’s aperitivo hour menu (as are a

variety of stuzzichini—little bites—as well as prosciutto and spaghetti all’amatriciana), then get seated. The dining areas are filled with brickwork, wooden floors and ceiling beams, and windows, which mean great views.

The sweet onion crepe with truffle and Parmesan fondue is one of the most delicious dishes you will ever have. It’s rich and slightly unctuous, visually striking, and you will either polish it off immediately or refuse to allow it to be cleared. Other smart starters include the foie gras pastrami, laid on toasted brioche with mostarda—now that’s a twist on a pastrami sandwich you’ve probably never tried before. Inventive chilled lobster salad comes with salsa verde and horseradish, while bluefin tuna crudo is served with mango, preserved lemon and Sicilian pistachios. Plus, you can get stuzzichini to munch on as well: prosciutto di parma and melon; Sicilian anchovies and roasted peppers; and whipped baccalà (Italian salted cod) and smoked trout roe. For a second course, try the spinach gnocchi with ricotta salata (it’s been aged and salted) and brown butter. It’s a really pretty dish, with the bright green gnocchi set against the butter. One of the sheer joys of dining in an Italian restaurant when you aren’t Italian is the discovery of yet another pasta shape, and Vetri Cucina doesn’t disappoint. You can order almond tortellini (a stuffed, ring-shaped pasta) with Parmesan and white truffle; corzetti (stamped pasta discs) with diver scallops, corn and cherries; and paccheri (large tubes) and seafood with Calabrian chili butter, plus several others. For the main event, sharing is a good idea. The salt-baked branzino is intended for two, and the 32-ounce prime dry-aged ribeye is large enough for the whole party. But you don’t have to share, and grilled wagyu bavette steak or grilled Green Circle chicken may be more to your liking. And have an adventure—try the tasting menu, where you’ll find goat. End the meal with a chocolate praline tart or bomboloni with blueberries, stone fruit and sweet mascarpone, especially good when accompanied by an amaro.

the last 35 years, Mecum Auctions has proven itself to be one of the premier collector-car auction houses in the world and, over the decades, its scope has broadened to include motorcycles, restored tractors and even guitars. And this year’s auction continues the excellent tradition of variety, with everything from a practically brand-new Lamborghini to a 1934 classic. And yes, motorcycles are again available for viewing and bidding, as are some truly off-the-beaten-path items. This year’s eye-grabber is surely going to be a 2022 flat green Lamborghini Aventador LP 780-4 Ultimae, one of only 350 produced—with only 97 miles on its odometer, a 6.5L/769 horsepower V-12 and a 7-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. But it’s only one of

an estimated 1,000 items up for auction, everything from American muscle cars, classics, Corvettes, exotics, trucks, hot rods, customs and so many more. Another highlight is sure to be the 16-vehicle George Walker Collection, which includes seven cars and nine motorcycles. This is a collection for the serious antique fan, ranging from a 1933 purple-over-gray Ford Roadster to a custom 1934 Ford hot rod. Highlighting the motorcycles is a 1929 Stylson. Spanning generations is the Holden Grace Collection, ranging from a 1937 Ford Custom Cabriolet (which underwent a four-year restoration, is finished in Maui

And this year, fans of Americana will absolutely want to check out the Road Art selection, which includes 100 items

Veteran’s Day, there’s an added bonus for those celebrating: One of the vehicles up for auction that day is a 1975 Ford F250 custom pickup, a frame-off custom build completed by a U.S. Army veteran, his wife and his young son. It’s an impressive truck, featuring custom-designed fuel tanks by Greatland Welding in Wasil-

The collection also includes 50 neon and tin signs, including an original 1949 Gulf Dealer Double-Sided Porcelain sign. And with this year’s event ending on

Peek inside the newly branded Markus Klinko Icons Sky Villa at Westgate Las Vegas

By Kiko Miyasato Photography by Christopher DeVargas

Elvis Presley slept here. The King of Rock ’n’ Roll made the top of Westgate Las Vegas his home during his historic run at the property (then known as The International and later the Las Vegas Hilton) from 1969 until his death in 1977. Years after, the top floor was divided into three separate villas with the Elvis suite still standing, although expanded to include more square footage and completely remodeled and redecorated. Recently the suite was rebranded as the Markus Klinko Icons Sky Villa, where the iconic photographer's work is set in a lavish suite, accessed by private elevator and grand in every way. “My life inspirational figure was Elvis Presley,” said Klinko in an exclusive interview with Las Vegas Magazine. “That’s not a lie. When I was 7 years old, I discovered Elvis. … He was a huge, monumental inspiration in my life. I had a poster of Elvis in my room. A few days ago, I found out it was taken right here (in this suite).” So it seems kismet that Klinko’s work is showcased in the very place that Elvis slept. “I can’t help to think that it’s fate,” he said. “… I do think there might be some cosmic energy somewhere.” Besides the King connection, Klinko has made the suite his art gallery, as he has chosen to showcase some of his most iconic photographs of celebrities from the worlds of music and screen. Throughout the 13,200 square feet of space—with four master suites, a great room, media room, sitting room, dining room with wet bar, butler’s pantry, private courtyard and pool—Klinko’s stunning photographs are on display. The stars that shine on the walls include Mary J. Blige, Kim Kardashian, Pamela Anderson, Kanye West, Mariah Carey, Beyoncé, David Bowie, Britney Spears and more. “Little did I know they were really meant for this place,” Klinko said. “This is where they’re really coming alive. It’s a rebirth of these large prints.”

Sir Rod Stewart bounces back to Vegas with Prince’s Trust contest winners in tow od Stewart has as much enthusiasm for his job today as he did when singing mainly paid off in pints and good times with his mates. He knows maintaining his connection with his audience, as he has at every phase in his career, is one of his primary job responsibilities. From playing the Fillmore East with the Jeff Beck Group in 1967 to the most recent dates of his Las Vegas residency in May, his passion for performing has been consistent. He’ll be connecting with a pair of audience members for the first Saturday evening show in November of Rod Stewart: The Hits in a different way, when the winners of a contest for donors to The Prince’s Trust join

Sir Stewart onstage to sing along. The organization provides direction for young people in the U.K. in the form of job training, employment paths and business ownership, and received a minimum $10 donation from contestants. Stewart’s journey to stardom was somewhat serendipitous. The football skills he grew up with in Scotland didn’t lend themselves to a formal career path outside of sports, but he was firmly embedded in youth culture of the early to mid’60s, and his passion for music led to networking with rising figures in the music scene. Steady employment came when Beck offered Stewart the position of lead singer in his first post-Yardbirds project.

Legend has it that Stewart hid behind the amplifiers at the first Jeff Beck Group show in the U.S., but he’d quickly shake off his stage fright and develop into the charismatic dancing frontman that would go on to join The Faces with Beck Group bandmate Ron Wood, then evolve into a solo act. By 1975, Wood had joined the Rolling Stones and Stewart traveled to legendary Alabama recording studio Muscle Shoals, where he would record “Sailing” and “I Don’t Want to Talk About It” for the Atlantic Crossing album. That album marked turns in direction for Stewart, both in terms of lifestyle and location. He recorded with members of Booker T. and the MGs instead of familiar friends and acquaintances, and settled in Los Angeles. Stewart managed to avoid the pitfalls of heavy partying as he became known for dating a succession of beautiful blonde celebrities. He also took shots for taking risks, most notably with 1978 disco smash “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy.” Fans of his blues-based rock sound shied away from the slicker pop pastures he grazed on in the ’80s, but as a live draw, Stewart never failed to deliver the goods, regardless of the era the songs he performed originated from. As Stewart eased into the elder statesman phase of his career, he’s pretty much done whatever he wants whenever he wants, whether its recording standards or continuing to tour extensively. If the host country of a venue that offers him a small fortune to perform there doesn’t respect human rights to his satisfaction, he will refuse to play there. Fortunately, he has the job security to make those kinds of choices.
